Florida-Friendly Landscaping™

Tyler Heel Community Manager theel@ evergreen-LM.com 877-221-6919

New land use policies and consumer demand are driving changes in landscape design and maintenance in residential and commercial developments. Throughout the state, communities, developers, and landscape professionals are embracing Florida-friendly landscaping practices that conserve water, reduce runoff of fertilizers, and minimize need for pesticides.

6. 7. 8. 9.

Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ (FFL) means using low-maintenance plants and environmentally sustainable practices. FFL is an innovative approach to maintaining an attractive, colorful, and diverse yard. It is friendly to wildlife and is less work than the traditional yards we’ve known for decades. Homeowners’ landscaping choices can affect the health of ground and surface waters, and by extension the natural environment. In addition to creating an appealing backdrop to your home, a Florida-Friendly Landscape becomes an asset to the environment, protecting natural resources and preserving the state’s unique beauty. Recognizing the home landscape as part of a larger natural system will help you make sound decisions in creating a Florida-Friendly yard.

KNOW YOUR DOCUMENTS

There are nine guiding principles to the FFL program: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Right Plant, Right Place Water Efficiently Fertilize Appropriately Use Mulch Attract Wildlife

Manage Yard Pests Responsibly Recycle Yard Waste Reduce Storm water Runoff Protect the Waterfront

In future articles, we’ll be discussing each of the 9 principles in more depth. For more information about FFL, visit ffl.ifas.ufl.edu.

13.33 Garbage Cans. Trash collection, disposal and recycling procedures established by Association shall be observed. No outside burning of trash or garbage is permitted. No garbage cans, supplies or other similar articles shall be maintained on any Home so as to be visible from outside the Home or Parcel. Notwithstanding the foregoing, on designated trash pickup days, any Owner may place their trash receptacles in a visible place from outside the Home or Parcel only in conformity with the trash collection and disposal procedures established by Association. Each Owner shall be responsible for properly depositing his or her garbage and trash in garbage cans and trash containers sufficient for pick-up by the appropriate collection entities in accordance with the requirements of any such entity. All trash and recycling receptacles shall be maintained in a sanitary condition. The Developer and thereafter, the Association, reserve the right to place garbage cans and pet waste disposal cans in and around the Common Property.

Welcome Month of March!

Carlyn Hagler Lifestyles Director chagler@ evergreen-LM.com 772-800-2505

I love March. The Florida weather is gorgeous at this time of year and the celebration of spring is in the air. I want to thank all the participants who joined me for the Vision Board Creations group in January! What a fun group! I’m looking forward to organizing another creative get together very soon, so watch for upcoming details. In review of the upcoming months for any national observance days/weeks, I came across a few fun dates coming up in March:

• • •

March 5th is National Cheese Doodle Day March 14th is National Potato Chip Day March 24th is National Chocolate Covered Raisin Day

Some of the more serious recognitions for the month include:

• • • • •

Brain Injury Awareness Month National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month Red Cross Month Save Your Vision Month National Kidney Month

April is National Volunteer Recognition Month. What is a volunteer? What is the value of

4   Vitalia Voice | March 2016

volunteering? Is volunteering about money? Should we measure it that way? Most people would say no. Volunteering is not about money. Volunteering is about giving, contributing, and helping other individuals, and the community at large. It is working with others to make a meaningful contribution to a better community. People volunteer for an endless variety of reasons. Many people want to gain experience, acquire new skills, meet new people, or expand their network of contacts as a way to get a new job or start a career. Others just want to give back to their community, to help a friend or promote a worthwhile activity. We have many wonderful volunteers in the Vitalia community who either volunteer for the HOA in a variety of capacities or for various outside nonprofits. Most nonprofits cannot survive without the endless service of volunteers. I’ll write more about volunteerism in the April newsletter, but in the meantime, let your neighbor know who volunteers for in the community how much they are appreciated for their service! “Not everything that counts can be counted. And not everything that can be counted, counts.” Albert Einstein

out & about Fitness Classes Current class schedules are available in the lobby and on the website calendar at VitaliaAtTraditionHOA.com. All classes are held in the Shoreside Aerobics Studio, unless otherwise specified.

Abs & More! 30 minutes of abdominal exercise combined with 20 minutes of a different target area each week (i.e.: arms, legs, back). You know you need to exercise your belly, but usually avoid it. So come join this class and check it off of your “to do list.” Core abdominal strength is essential for balance, strength, posture, coordination, and directly supports lower back strength. Reducing belly fat is beneficial for all around health and reduces the risk of sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and heart disease ( just to name a few) and makes it easier to put your pants and shoes on! Participants must be able to get up and down from the floor for this class.

All Level Yoga Authentic Hatha Yoga class with focus on proper alignment with emphasis on breath and meditation. This deeply relaxing class enlivens the body, challenges the mind and soothes the spirit. Please enter the room in silence and bring your own mat, towel, and water in a closed container.

Aquacise Sunset Beach Pool

An excellent cardio and strength workout for all levels by utilizing water weights, aqua gloves and noodles to achieve a very unique workout. Swimming is not required.

Aqua Zumba Sunset Beach Pool

Get your ‘groove on’ as you burn calories with a complete, no-impact workout. This class is for all who enjoy having a blast while getting in an aqua-fantastic workout!

Core Strength A safe yet effective, non-impact exercise class designed to strengthen the CORE muscles of the body while increasing flexibility and range of motion. Improve strength, posture, balance and coordination. A strong foundation is a key component to prevent injury, reduce back pain and enhance your activities of daily living. Modifications will be given to ensure safety and to cater to all levels.

Group X Toning Take your workout to the next level. This class is designed to strengthen and sculpt every major muscle group utilizing 8   Vitalia Voice | March 2016

hand weights and/or barbells and other equipment. Group exercise provides a motivating atmosphere that is conducive to working out! Any fitness level is welcome.

H20 Pilates Sunset Beach Pool

Non-impact strengthening and stretching movements that require precise breathing and muscle control. Practicing Pilates in the water develops trunk stabilization, enhances muscle strength, helps correct posture and relieves stress.

Line Dancing Line dance is a choreographed dance with a repeated sequence of steps in which a group of people dance in one or more lines or rows, all facing either each other or in the same direction, and executing the steps at the same time.

Pilates The content of each class is dictated by the bodies that attend it. Want to fix your sciatica; Scoliosis; or Stenosis? Don’t have any injuries and wanna keep it that way? Learn how to stack yourself with integrity (perfect posture) so you can build strength and power wherever you need it.

Step and Tone This is a form of aerobic power distinguished from other types of aerobic exercise by its use of an elevated platform (the step). It helps burn calories, reduce stress, promote restful sleep, and strengthen muscles. Incorporating both upper and lower body movements together will improve your coordination and agility, and the constant push up onto the step will increase leg strength.

Stretch Lengthen and strengthen your muscles, increase flexibility, reduce stress, and allow your body the time to relax and rebuild. Relieve joint pain, muscle soreness, and avoid injury. Stretching improves balance, posture and coordination, increases cardiovascular endurance, adds strength for daily activities, improves your sport, and prolongs life. Modifiers will be given for all levels - chairs can also be used if needed for assistance.

Yin/Restorative Yoga This is passive style using long stretches of 1-20 minutes to

out & about Fitness Classes work the fascia (connective tissue); we will be holding for 2-8 minutes per pose. Restorative takes the same pose and through the use of blankets, bolsters and/or blocks, allows the person to “melt” into a relaxed state. All work is done on the mat either seated or lying down and may utilize the wall.

Zumba Incorporates Latin and international music and dance with a blended balance of cardio and muscle toning.

Zumba Gold Introduces easy-to-follow choreography focusing on balance, range of motion, and coordination. A modified Zumba class that recreates the original moves at a lower-intensity.

Arts & Crafts Classes Questions regarding the Arts & Crafts Classes can be directed to Debbie Chisholm at 772-800-2504 or dchisholm@evergreen-LM.com.

We’ll be discussing The Silent Sister by Diane Chamberlain. Riley MacPherson has spent her entire life believing that her older sister Lisa committed suicide as a teenager. Now, over 20 years later, her father has passed away and she’s cleaning out his house when she finds evidence to the contrary. Lisa is alive and living under a new identity. But why exactly was she on the run all those years ago, and what secrets are being kept now?
