Water Wise Choosing the right plant for the right place goes a long way towards conserving water. So does grouping plants with similar water needs together and zoning your irrigation system appropriately. Here’s a list of key terms and definitions to help understand the purpose and operation of your irrigation system.

Tyler Heel Community Manager theel@ evergreen-LM.com 877-221-6919

Turf and Water Water is essential for turf growth. It is required for germination, photosynthesis, and as a part of the turf. Most of the water absorbed by turf is transpired through the leaves into the atmosphere. This water moves nutrients from the soil into the plant, but equally important, it eliminates heat buildup from solar radiation. The water applied by an irrigation system will evaporate from the soil and be transpired from plant surfaces. Evaporation and transpiration (evapotranspiration) depend mostly on the climate around the plant; thus, the amount of water used by turf changes with the seasons. Because of this, for a well-managed turf, irrigation frequency (scheduling) should change with the time of year.

The Soil Reservoir Only water that is in contact with the roots can be absorbed by the plant. The volume of soil where water can be stored is as deep as the roots are. Root depth is affected by mowing, fertilizing, and irrigation practices. A wellmanaged turf system will develop most of its roots in the first 12 inches of the soil. Another important property of the soil reservoir is that soils have a limited ability to store water. The larger the pores in the soil, the less water the soil will hold. The soil at Vitalia is dense and stores water close to the surface.

The Irrigation System An irrigation system is a collection of hydraulic devices that deliver water to the turf. The irrigation system at Vitalia consists of a mainline and community or independent zones leading to an elaborate pipe network with pop-up sprinklers

and rotors that deliver irrigation water.

How Sprinklers Work A sprinkler is a device used to produce artificial rainfall (sprinkler precipitation). Its purpose is to apply water as uniformly as possible over a given area. Most sprinklers at Vitalia are gear-driven or stationary spray nozzle types. Nozzles produce a stream of water that is broken up by a pin that protrudes into the flow stream. As the sprinkler operates, it covers a circular area producing a conical water distribution pattern. Since the water applied to the surface of the turf is nearly coneshaped, sprinklers must be spaced so that the areas covered by the sprinklers overlap each other. Sprinklers that are spaced too far apart result in a watering pattern that is not uniform. Properly spaced sprinklers result in a uniform watering pattern. In general, sprinkler overlap should be such that water from a sprinkler should nearly reach the neighboring sprinklers. When the spacing of sprinklers is more than 60% of the diameter of throw of the sprinklers, it’s very likely that the system will not perform well. An exception to this is the stationary spray nozzle sprinkler that is designed to put out uniform precipitation patterns with little or no overlap. It is important that sprinklers are operated at the pressure recommended by the manufacturer. Sprinklers working at low pressure will produce a doughnut pattern around the sprinkler. Sprinklers operating at high pressure will break up the stream, producing excessive small droplets that will cause most of the water to be deposited close to the sprinkler or lost to evaporation and wind drift.

Scheduling Your Irrigation The system at Vitalia is programed with estimations based on climatic records. Past history of climate can be used to estimate how often irrigation should be applied to turf. We

also use direct measurement of soil moisture. At this time there are no automated sensors for measuring the amount of available water in the soil connected to any of the Vitalia irrigation system components. Turf requires water to maintain a healthy and uniform appearance; these are our guidelines to work within the Florida Friendly system to reduce watering. Make use of mulched areas, especially in hard-to-reach places. Consider using drought-tolerant plants. Irrigate by demand. Apply water only when the soil has been depleted. Always apply only the amount of water that is required to refill the soil. Change the irrigation frequency not the amount of water applied. Keep track of the time since the last rain or irrigation to determine when the next irrigation is due. Do not apply daily light irrigations (less than 1/4 depth of water). It has been shown that deep irrigations (more than 2/3 depth of water) applied less frequently provide better turf quality. Detailed information and recommendations for turf management in Florida are available from your county Extension office (solutionsforyourlife.ufl.edu/map).

Know Your Documents 13.6.3 Driveway Easement. Each owner shall be responsible

In making such repairs and maintenance, no changes shall be made to the driveways including, but not limited to, the color, texture, or surface composition thereof without the prior written approval of the ARC. Each owner, by acceptance of a deed to a home, shall be deemed to have agreed to indemnify and hold harmless Association and the holder of any such easement, including without limitation, all applicable utility companies and governmental agencies, their agents, servants, employees and elected officials, from and against any and all actions or claims whatsoever arising out of the use of the Community Property and any easement or the construction and/or maintenance of any driveway in that portion of the Community Property, easement area, or in a public right-of-way between the boundary of such Owner’s Home and the edge of the adjacent paved roadway. May is Here! This means the humidity is lower, the temperatures are mild and the signs of spring are popping out all over! This is the time of year it’s enjoyable to be outdoors, exercise and breathe in the fresh air. It also means summer is fast approaching and the humidity and heat will rise!

Carlyn Hagler Lifestyles Director chagler@ evergreen-LM.com 772-800-2505

When people are exposed to extreme heat, they can suffer from potentially deadly heatrelated illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat is the leading weather-related killer in the United States, even though most heat-related deaths are preventable through

outreach and intervention. Some of the statistics are staggering! National Heat Awareness Day is May 27th and an educational presentation has been scheduled at the Captiva Club to bring about awareness on the dangers of the summer heat. Come and learn about prevention and the warning signs of heat stroke and heat exhaustion. The presented information could save your life or the life of a loved one. Be sure to RSVP at the front desk lobby or email me at chagler@evergreen-lm.com.

In recognition of National Heat Awareness Day there will be an educational presentation on the dangers of summer heat. The presentation will take place from 9:30am-10:30am in the Augustine Room. Bagels, coffee and juice will be served.

Meet Tennis Instructor Jonathan Born in Indiana, Jonathan Andrews moved down to Hobe Sound, FL at a young age. After a successful junior tennis career, he then attended Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers and majored in Resort and Hospitality Management. He then became a certified Tennis Professional with the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) at the young age of 19. Once certified, he began playing numerous Pro/ Am Tournaments as well as professional tournaments while learning and teaching at Pelican Sound Golf and River Club in Bonita Springs. Jonathan then felt the need to take a short break from tennis to serve in the United States Army

as a Combat Arms Cavalry Scout during a time of war. Once he completed his service in the military, it was time for him to get back to the courts and pick up right where he left off entering as a tennis professional at the prestigious Shadow Wood Country Club in Bonita Springs. Still playing competitively, he was able to reach as high as 5th in the State of Florida for the USPTA Men’s Open Singles Division in 2014. After learning from two great mentors, Jonathan also became the Director of Tennis at Palmira Golf and Country Club in Naples. In 2015 Jonathan made his way back to Stuart where he not only became the Director of Tennis at the Ocean Club on Hutchinson Island, but was also ranked number 1 in Florida’s USPTA Mixed Open Doubles Division. Jonathan is also a Brand Ambassador of Team Babolat and brings energy and enthusiasm to grow the Tennis Center here at Vitalia.

out & about Fitness Classes Current class schedules are available in the lobby and on the website calendar at VitaliaAtTraditionHOA.com. All classes are held in the Shoreside Aerobics Studio, unless otherwise specified.

Abs & More! 30 minutes of abdominal exercise combined with 20 minutes of a different target area each week (i.e.: arms, legs, back). You know you need to exercise your belly, but usually avoid it. So come join this class and check it off of your “to do list.” Core abdominal strength is essential for balance, strength, posture, coordination, and directly supports lower back strength. Participants must be able to get up and down from the floor for this class.

Aquacise at Sunset Beach Pool An excellent cardio and strength workout for all levels by utilizing water weights, aqua gloves and noodles to achieve a very unique workout. Swimming is not required.

Aqua Zumba at Sunset Beach Pool Get your ‘groove on’ as you burn calories with a complete, no-impact workout. This class is for all who enjoy having a blast while getting in an aqua-fantastic workout!

Core Strength A safe yet effective, non-impact exercise class designed to strengthen the CORE muscles of the body while increasing flexibility and range of motion. Improve strength, posture, balance and coordination. A strong foundation is a key component to prevent injury, reduce back pain and enhance your activities of daily living. Modifications will be given to ensure safety and to cater to all levels.

Group X Toning Take your workout to the next level. This class is designed to strengthen and sculpt every major muscle group utilizing hand weights and/or barbells and other equipment. Group exercise provides a motivating atmosphere that is conducive to working out! Any fitness level is welcome.

H20 Pilates at Sunset Beach Pool Non-impact strengthening and stretching movements that require precise breathing and muscle control. Practicing Pilates in the water develops trunk stabilization, enhances muscle strength, helps correct posture and relieves stress.

Line Dancing Line dance is a choreographed dance with a repeated sequence of steps in which a group of people dance in one

or more lines or rows, all facing either each other or in the same direction, and executing the steps at the same time.

Pilates The content of each class is dictated by the bodies that attend it. Want to fix your sciatica; Scoliosis; or Stenosis? Don’t have any injuries and wanna keep it that way? Learn how to stack yourself with integrity (perfect posture) so you can build strength and power wherever you need it.

Step and Tone This is a form of aerobic power distinguished from other types of aerobic exercise by its use of an elevated platform (the step). It helps burn calories, reduce stress, promote restful sleep, and strengthen muscles. Incorporating both upper and lower body movements together will improve your coordination and agility, and the constant push up onto the step will increase leg strength.

Stretch Lengthen and strengthen your muscles, increase flexibility, reduce stress, and allow your body the time to relax and rebuild. Relieve joint pain, muscle soreness, and avoid injury. Stretching improves balance, posture and coordination, increases cardiovascular endurance, adds strength for daily activities, improves your sport, and prolongs life. Modifiers will be given for all levels - chairs can also be used if needed for assistance.

Yin/Restorative Yoga This is passive style using long stretches of 1-20 minutes to work the fascia (connective tissue); we will be holding for 2-8 minutes per pose. Restorative takes the same pose and through the use of blankets, bolsters and/or blocks, allows the person to “melt” into a relaxed state. All work is done on the mat either seated or lying down and may utilize the wall.

Zumba Incorporates Latin and international music and dance with a blended balance of cardio and muscle toning.

Zumba Gold Introduces easy-to-follow choreography focusing on balance, range of motion, and coordination. A modified Zumba class that recreates the original moves at a lower-intensity. May 2016 | Vitalia Voice   9

Book Club Tuesday, May 10th | 9:30am Augustine Room

We’ll be discussing We Are Not Ourselves by Matthew Thomas. The book synopsis is below. Born in 1941, Eileen Tumulty is raised by her Irish immigrant parents in Woodside, Queens, in an apartment where the mood swings between heartbreak and hilarity, depending on whether guests are over and how much alcohol has been consumed. When Eileen meets Ed Leary, a scientist whose bearing is nothing like those of the men she grew up with, she thinks she’s found the perfect partner to deliver her to the cosmopolitan world she longs to inhabit. They marry and Eileen quickly discovers Ed doesn’t aspire to the same, ever bigger, stakes in the American Dream. Upcoming books: June 14th - The Marriage of Opposites by Alice Hoffman and July 12th - The Paris Time Capsule by Ella Carey. For more information, contact Adrian Goetz at 772-345-2294 or gba1255@aol.com. Q: Can I redeem more than one joker in a turn? A: Yes. You are permitted to redeem multiple jokers ( from any number of racks) during your turn (after taking a 14th tile into the hand, either by picking or calling, and before discarding). You can redeem as many as 8 jokers (since there are no more than 8 jokers in the mahjong set) in one turn! It’s legal! Unlikely, perhaps, but permissible. Missy Sippy’s Club
