Zika Virus and Mosquito Protection

Tyler Heel Community Manager theel@ evergreen-LM.com 877-221-6919

Prior to the Olympic Games we heard a lot about Zika and recently Florida has been on the national news for the Zika Virus. Should we be worried about the Zika? Don’t panic. That’s the message the National Pest Management Association shared. “In certain areas of the country it simply won’t be an issue,” says Cindy Mannes, Vice President of Public Affairs for NPMA. Here’s what you should know. Disease Carriers – Two Types of Mosquitoes: Aedes aegypti (Yellow Fever Mosquito)

Aedes albopictus (Asian Tiger Mosquito)

Dangers include: Zika Virus, West Nile, Encephalitis, Malaria, Yellow and Dengue Fever, Chikungunya Disease, and Vector for Heartworm in dogs and cats. What is Zika? Zika is a viral disease spread primarily through the bite of an Aedes species mosquito - such as the yellow fever mosquito and the Asian tiger mosquito - that is infected with the Zika Virus. Aedes mosquitoes are the perfect contractors of diseases like Zika, says Laura Harrington, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Entomology at Cornell University. “They have a preference for humans and are stealthy biters,” she says. “Their habitats (also)

are typically in close association and contact with humans.” By “stealthy biters,” she means the bites often aren’t felt or anticipated until after the bite. Additionally, people typically associate mosquitoes with evenings and nights, but these guys are daytime feeders. The virus can be transmitted other, less likely ways, such as sexually and through blood transfusions. Pregnant women or women planning to become pregnant should be most concerned, says Joe Laco from the CDC’s Zika Response Team. How Do I Know If I Have It? Most people infected with Zika Virus (80%) fight off the virus with no symptoms. The majority of people with symptoms have relatively mild illness with fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (pink eye). The primary health concern is for women who are pregnant (or might become pregnant) traveling to areas where Zika is currently circulating. Cases are often diagnosed through blood tests. Right now there is no medicine or vaccine that treats the virus. The CDC suggests people treat the symptoms with rest, acetaminophen (to reduce fever and pain), and fluids (to prevent dehydration). The NPMA reminds lawn and pest professionals that they may be an authority on mosquito biology and control, but they are not doctors. See a Medical Doctor if you have, or believe you have the virus. Can Pest Management Companies Help Prevent It? Unfortunately, pest management professionals cannot eliminate the spread of a disease like Zika, but they can help prevent it. The first and most important step is managing the expectations from a mosquito prevention treatment. “When a client hires a firm, the initial expectation is that they will have no more mosquitoes, no more bites, and that’s really Continued on Page 4

Mosquitoes...continued difficult to do because when we’re dealing with mosquito control it’s in an outdoor environment,” says Jim Fredricks, Ph.D., Vice President of Technical and Regulatory Affairs for NPMA. “Mosquitoes are mobile and can certainly fly into a yard and bite your client.” He advises pest management professionals to discuss their ability to reduce mosquito populations and reduce the number of bites they receive on their properties. The biggest thing to look for is standing water, in which Aedes larvae breed. Up to a ½ inch of water (which can be found inside tires, tree holes, pails, plastic jugs, clogged gutters, birdbaths, catch basins, children’s toys, abandoned pools, and flowerpots) can be incubators for Aedes in someone’s yard. When a potential breeding site is located, check the site to see if larvae are present. Aedes will often rest near the top of the water. If it’s tough to tell if larvae are present in stagnant water, extracting samples of the water with a dropper can help improve the view. “Aedes mosquitoes live near their preferred food source - us,” Jenkins says. “They have adapted to live in our environment, so treatment must focus on the areas where they live and rest.” His company uses “an adulticide with a good residual.” Then when adults land on or attempt to hide in these areas they die. Our onsite fert and pest company offers mosquito control and can provide a quote for your home if you’re interested. The treatment consists of spraying all harborage areas where mosquitoes hide. Treatments should be done monthly from March to September for best results. Target areas are the underside of leaves of all plants, trees, mulch, ground covers, and hanging baskets.

or rainwater has collected around the outside of your home. Cover your bare skin and clothing with repellent if you must be outside when mosquitoes are active during the hours of dusk and dawn. The disease carrying mosquitoes are daytime biters and usually don’t fly far from the containers where they spent their immature life stages. Wear shoes, socks, and long pants/sleeves. This question and the previous one go hand in hand because mosquito control is a team effort, Jenkins says. “Customer cooperation is vital to the success of the program,” says Jenkins. “Without cooperation, unreasonable expectations will not only cause customer dissatisfaction, it will increase the liability for you and increase the likelihood that diseases will be vectored in the customer’s environment.” Like the professional, the first thing the homeowner can do is eliminate breeding grounds around his or her property. It’s not “one and done,” as Jenkins says. Both parties must constantly monitor potential breeding grounds. Unseen breeding grounds are also less likely to form if the homeowner runs a fan outdoors to keep air moving. The customer’s biggest responsibility is to try not to get bitten. Aedes mosquitoes typically only travel 100 meters or less, so control is hyper-local. Jenkins, who supplies clients with a document outlining control suggestions, says to consider wearing long sleeve shirts, long pants, and socks with shoes. Clothing also can be treated with preventive products, such as permethrin spray, which often lasts up to 10 washes. Even DEET mosquito repellents (which are also suggested by the EPA and CDC for reducing mosquito bites) go a long way in the fight to prevent Zika and other mosquito-borne illnesses. The county currently provides mosquito control here in Vitalia about once a week. The St. Lucie Mosquito Control District can be reached at 772-462-1692.

Happy September! Did you know National Read A Book Day is observed annually on September 6th? Have you visited the Captiva Club library recently? It is well stocked with a vast array of interest for all book lovers! When the clubhouse opened, the library was set up by a group of volunteers and is kept well organized by resident Helen Penzel. Ellen Waller, another resident volunteer, always jumps in to help Helen when needed.

Carlyn Hagler Lifestyles Director chagler@ evergreen-LM.com 772-800-2505

It is time to turn off the television and other electronics and enjoy the relaxation of reading. Reading is very good for improving memory and concentration as well as reducing stress. Reading books is among brain-stimulating activities shown to slow down cognitive decline in old age with people who participated in more mentally stimulating activities over their lifetimes having a slower rate of decline in memory and other mental capacities. Reading is a good way to learn about other times, other places, and many other things and is also a very affordable means of entertainment. In researching the history of libraries, here’s some tidbits I came across:

• • • • •

The very first books used parchment or vellum (calf skin) for the book pages. The book covers were made of wood and often covered with leather. The books were fitted with clasps or straps. Public libraries appeared in the Middle Ages. Books in public libraries were often chained to a bookshelf or a desk to prevent theft.

What better way to beat the heat than by reading an enjoyable book! Sit back, relax, and read a book. Use #ReadABookDay to post on social media.

Vitalia Event Planning Committee Submitted by Cathy Powers, Chairperson What is there to do in Vitalia? How can I meet other residents that have similar interests as I do? What can I plan to do at the clubhouse or at one of our two pools? Wonder no more. Come to the Vitalia Club Showcase in the Grand Treasure Ballroom on September 9th. Each club operating in Vitalia has been invited to have representatives present to meet and talk with residents about activities and happenings during this showcase event. So, bring your calendars to make your plans as you stroll through the Ballroom and enjoy meeting other residents. You will find out what there is to do and why this is such a great community we live in. 6   Vitalia Voice | September 2016

Book Club Tuesday, September 13th | 9:30am | Augustine Room

We’ll be discussing Iron House by John Hart. The book synopsis is below. There was nothing but time at the Iron Mountain Home for Boys, time for two orphans to learn that life is neither painless nor won without a fight. Julian survives only because his older brother, Michael, is both feared and fiercely protective. When an older boy is brutally killed, Michael makes the ultimate sacrifice to protect his brother - he flees the orphanage and takes the blame with him. For two decades, Michael thrives on the streets of New York, eventually clawing his way to a world of wealth, fear, and respect. But the life he's fought to build unravels when he meets a woman who knows nothing of his past or sins. He wants a fresh start with Elena, the chance to build a family of his own. But a life in organized crime is not so easily abandoned. With a price on his head and everyone he loves at risk, Michael spirits Elena back to North Carolina, to the brother he'd lost and a thicket of intrigue more dense than he could possibly imagine. In a tour de force narrative of violence, hope, and redemption, the brothers must return to the Iron House of their childhood, to the place that almost broke them, the place it all began. Upcoming books: October 11th - Saving Sophie by Ronald H. Balson; and November 8th - Trail of Broken Wings by Sejal Badani. Contact: Adrian Goetz, 772-345-2294 or gba1255@aol.com.

Meeting & Author's Discussion Tuesday, September 6th | 10:30am-12:30pm | Ballroom

Hadassah's guest speaker, Russel Lazega, author of Managing Bubbie, writes a heart-rending story with hilarious family members. He recounts the frequently hectic, ever-exhausting trials of one Jewish family in Miami Beach as they try to oversee the care of an elderly, unmanageable Lea Lazega. As they scramble for an acceptable assisted living facility and struggle to adjust Lea's medications, they discover the difficulties of controlling a woman who time and again eluded catastrophe by refusing to be told what to do. A tapestry of an American family in the 1980s, Managing Bubbie also revisits the Holocaust period to mine the love, 14   Vitalia Voice | September 2016

hope, and humor that emerged from deepest despair. Anyone who savors a soft heart with a sharp funny bone will laugh, cry, and commiserate with the confounded family who must manage their beloved, impossible Bubbie. Books will be available for purchase and signing at the discussion. A suggested donation of $5 would be greatly appreciated. RSVP to Ronni Reed at 732-740-9082. Mahjong Club Please contact Shelley Deixler at shell842@gmail.com for more information and days/times that the club meets. MALKA'S MAHJONG CORNER: ASK THE EXPERT Q: Doesn't "racking" mean "bringing the tile behind the rack" or "tapping the tile on the rack?” A: No. "Racking" a tile means placing it on the sloping front of the rack. Period. This tapping idea probably resulted from a desire to make the game move quickly. Maybe someone who picked a tile, saw it was a joker, but had to put it back because somebody else called the most recent discard, wanted a faster way to "rack" the tile. Racking a tile closes the window of opportunity for another player to claim the current discard - tapping the tile on the rack is not racking it. Standing the tile on one's card is not racking it. Some fast players immediately rack a tile after picking it (I call this practice "pickandrack"). Whatever the reason for engaging in pickandrack, if it's done very quickly after the previous player's discard, it's aggressive and unkind.

Missy Sippy's Club We are still taking a break for the next month. We will be gearing up again on Wednesday, October 5th. Hope you all are having a great summer! See you all in October!
