Giving & Receiving
You’re giving...but are you receiving?

From the
Editor Christmas is my favorite time of the year as we celebrate the birth of our Savior while enjoying good food, time with family, music, performances, and special candlelit services at church. This Christmas, let’s remember the reason for this holy season. “What Does Christmas Mean to You?” by Amanda Wright explores the meaning of Christmas and tells of family fun and traditions (see page 24).
Dear Friends,
I
t is with great excitement that I introduce our first issue of Overflow Magazine. What better time of year to launch a free Christian magazine than during the Christmas season, as we celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ! You may be thinking “where did the name of this magazine come from and what does it have to do with God?” The Lord led us to name the magazine “Overflow” because He is an abundant, more than enough, overflowing God. He abundantly supplies for those who believe, are obedient, and stand on His Word. As, Psalm 23:5 says “… my cup overflows.” God not only provides for a Believer’s every need, He gives them more than enough so they can bless those around them. The Bible states more than 30 times, in several different ways, to tell of God’s marvelous works and that is exactly what we are doing with this magazine. In every issue you will find several testimonies of God’s good works or what we like to call “Magnify Him” reports. These reports are submitted by YOU through our website. The Magnify Him reports give glory to God and tell of the awesome things God is doing right in our local community. When God does a miraculous work in our neighbor’s life, we are reminded that He can and will do the same for us – when we believe. Remember, God is no respecter of persons.
During my childhood, I really enjoyed opening all the gifts at Christmas time. As an adult I have learned that I get as much, if not more, pleasure from giving gifts to others. Chris Cherp’s article, “Giving and Receiving,” on page 32 touches on this and more. If you like frozen yogurt, as most of us do, then you will enjoy reading our cover story, “Frozen Yogurt, Faith, and Yahweh” on page 12. It’s an encouraging article about an amazing Christian couple and their yogurt shop, Your Weigh Yogurt Shoppe. Warning after reading it, you may become hungry for a yummy frozen treat! You’ll find other great articles along with some tasty Christmas recipes, pictures of our neighbors sharing their favorite scriptures, and much more. I believe you will enjoy this issue as much as I do. If you don’t yet know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, I encourage you to receive the best gift ever offered. God has already given you this gift of salvation through Jesus Christ; all you have to do is receive it (our salvation spread is on pages 34 and 35). While you are celebrating the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, I hope you have a peaceful and joyous time with your family and friends. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,
Amie Cherp

Meet
Overflow
It all started with a family Christian book club. The four of us began meeting every week to have dinner and to read and discuss Christian books. We really enjoyed the food, the fellowship, and most importantly the teachings on the Word of God. After several weeks of meeting together, God started revealing in our hearts His plan for our lives. Through time in prayer, The Lord directed us to start a free local Christian magazine. Many questions started racing through our minds. We thought…Why us? Are you sure? How are we going to do this? And God gave this word (through Chris) for all four of us: “I make the weak strong, I make the sick well, I make the poor rich, I AM! None of you have ever created a magazine; I know this, that’s why you have been chosen. Move forward in faith only! This is going to be BIG, I mean BIGGER than you think, so start thinking BIG because I AM a BIG GOD. ‘Roll your work onto Me, and I will cause your thoughts to become agreeable with My Will, and so your plans will prosper and succeed.’ (Proverbs 16:3) When doubt or fear whisper in your ear resist it in Jesus Name.” Our God is an Awesome God! We know that with God this magazine is possible. We believe that Overflow Magazine will give glory to God and touch the lives of those in our local community bringing them closer to the saving grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. God Bless you! Guidance In Faith
Obedience
The Lord led me to get involved with a special organization and volunteer my time to help them. Several months before I decided to get involved, my husband and I prayed and believed to pay off several debts we had incurred over the last several years. My husband and I started a project for this organization and sowed our money and our time for over two months to complete the project. God continued to lead me to bless this organization and the people it helps throughout the project and after it was over as well. I was obedient and did each
Just the other day I was using my wheel barrel when I overloaded the barrel and broke the seal where the tire and wheel meet. I went to the gas station to fill the tire with air but as quick as I put air in the tire, air came out of the gap between the wheel and the tire. After fifteen minutes of trying and retrying to fill the tire with air, I finally stopped and asked God to show me how to fill it. Within seconds I was taking my belt off and wrapping it around the circumference of the tire. Pulling my belt as tight as I could, I then placed the air nozzle back to the tire and immediately the tire was full. I had to laugh because there is no way that I would have ever thought to do that on my own. That just goes to show that God cares about the little things too, all we have to do is ask for guidance in faith and He will gladly give it to us. Glory to God!

thing He instructed me to do and the Lord rewarded us for our obedience. For about 5 months in a row my husband and I received financial assistance to pay some of our debts off. The money came from unexpected places, but we knew who the source was. We praised God with each check or amount of cash we received and knew He was using different people to fulfill our needs. He made it happen because we lived in obedience to His Word and His guidance. Praise the Lord!

A Reminder I have recently learned that it’s God’s desire for His children to spend time with Him in prayer. While spending time with Him one day He reminded me that I owed an old college buddy some money from years past. I hadn’t spoken to this person in several years so I shook it off as something silly. Months later The Lord reminded me again. Finally I sent a check for the amount I owed to

my buddy. The next week I receive a letter back from him with the check in it, saying it was great to hear from me and to forget about the debt I had owed him and instead to buy my son something nice with it. The incredible thing was right after I obeyed God, He began answering prayers I had requested several months earlier. Then He reminded me of the verse Romans 13:8, “Owe no one anything, except to love one another, for the one who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law.” Even though I never thought the answers to my prayers were being delayed because of my disobedience to the leading of the Lord, He reminded me of this scripture and it was very clear what He had been trying to get me to do since I requested my prayers. God knows what He is doing, we just need to be still and listen. Praise God.

Desires of My Heart For a few years I had been saying every morning, “I delight myself also in the Lord and He gives me the desires of my heart” (Psalm 37:4) and, “We will create a successful ministry and family business and move in the direction that will please God.” Glory to God, the Lord has given me the desires of my heart. My family and I have started this magazine that primarily gives glory to our Lord Jesus Christ while allowing us to share the good news about Jesus with thousands of people through the distribution of this free magazine. The Word of God is flooding our towns and an awakening is beginning to take place as the church rises up and prepares the earth for the harvest to come. Praise God forever! +++ Chris, Wesley Chapel

Overcoming I used to have an allergy to most shampoos. When I used typical shampoo I would break out in a rash on my skin where ever my hair would touch. I also had an allergy to pollen and certain times of the year I would have to take medicine everyday. I was fed up with having to buy special shampoos and medicine to treat my allergies. After studying the Word of God, I realized that I have the authority through the Name of Jesus Christ over any issue that was going on in my body. So, I spoke to the allergies and rebuked them from my

A Calling
His Will
I was faced with a calling that I had to pursue in faith. I was a hateful loner who was a drug addict. When I got saved He immediately began to grow me, faster than I think I was prepared for. I found a church, Pathways Community Church, in Largo. The Lord then instructed me to take over the greeting ministry. I couldn’t believe this, “How could a man who was a hateful loner lead the greeting ministry?” But God worked it out and the blessings from that have been incredible. Several months later He called me to teach an adult Sunday school class; a faith builder’s class. Again, I asked the Lord, “How can I lead a class when I’m not even comfortable reading my Bible in my own quiet time?” His response to me was to do it in faith. Not only am I teaching a class of baby Christians, but He is teaching me through the messages. Now I am comfortable in reading the Bible on my own, allowing Him to guide me through His Word. The students He has blessed me with have all been encouraging and growing with each message He sends us. Blessings! I share this with you to say “keep doing what He has instructed you to do. He will open doors where there are none.”
+++Eddie P., Largo
Stop Worrying I used to constantly worry about many things. Are all the doors locked in the house? Did I leave the stove on? Did I unplug the toaster, the coffee pot, the blow dryer…or most any appliance? Was the dryer or dishwasher running when I left the house? Am I going to have enough money to pay the bills or buy groceries? The list of worries I had goes on and on but God delivered me from all my worries. I started mediating on the scriptures Psalm 138:8 “The Lord perfects that which concerns me…” and 1 Peter 5:7 “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” and with time I stopped worrying. I learned to roll all of my cares onto the Lord. Praise God! +++ AC, Victorious Life Church
In the early 70’s, my life was very far from God. I was living in deep sin when I asked the Lord to take over my life. He saved my marriage and put me on an incredible journey serving Him and witnessing

the gospel of Jesus Christ. Several years ago, he opened the door for me to work as a volunteer in the jail and prison ministry. Today, as an ordained Pastor, I serve as a staff Chaplain at the local county jail teaching the inmates about Jesus, the loving Savior that can change one’s life for the better. I am blessed by the love of my beautiful wife of 34 years, two wonderful grown sons, and a lovely daughter-in-law (who are also believers in Christ). I firmly believe that He is the author and finisher of our faith, and when we allow Him to do His will in our lives, there is nothing He can’t accomplish in us. +++M.K., Pathways Community Church

Spotlight Business of the Month
Frozen Yogurt, Faith, and Yahweh A substitute teacher, flight attendant, firefighter, Zumba instructor, franchise sales broker, business owner…You must think I am talking about several different people. No, these jobs are just some of what this extraordinary Christian woman has done. As I sat talking with Neysa Smith in Your Weigh Yogurt Shoppe, I was amazed by the variety of jobs this mother of six has held in her lifetime and how God has moved in her life.
12 OverflowMag.com Dec 2009 / Jan 2010
Neysa and her husband, Scott, met on a Christian website and were married within a month. They didn’t even date. “We knew God put us together,” recalls Neysa. “We are perfectly matched in business. I’m the marketing person and he is the finance guy and we work very well together. We have 6 kids and 6 grandbabies.” Neysa and Scott have opened many businesses together over the past 11 years. Just some of these former businesses include a fitness center franchise, Tae Kwon Do schools, tanning salons, and a helicopter training school. Presently, they are owners of a telecom-

ties but Neysa explained, “We are just blended really well. We like working together. We like each other too, which makes a difference…. We like being together all of the time, and whatever we do, we do it together.” Since they have been married, they have always worked together in some capacity. Even when Neysa was a flight attendant or working other jobs, she helped her husband with their businesses. She worked various flexible jobs so she could be around her husband and children more. Neysa mentioned that when running a business it would be hard to find time to see your spouse unless you were doing it together. So, running the businesses together has allowed for Scott and Neysa to spend more time together. They really enjoy being partners in all their endeavors. It is very evident that God’s presence is in their relationship.
your weigh yogurt
Your Weigh Yogurt Shoppe is Scott and Neysa’s newest adventure. “Frozen yogurt is very popular right now because people are looking for treats that are healthy,” says Neysa. “It’s very difficult to do that with ice cream. We’re always going to like ice cream, so why not have a healthy alternative.”
munications company and Your Weigh Yogurt Shoppe. Neysa is also an independent distributor of BSkinny Coffee by Boresha®. However, Neysa says, “I am a mom and wife first and foremost!”
marriage and business… good combination or not?
For this couple, marriage and business is a great combination. What keeps their marriage and business relationship strong? When asked this question Neysa quickly responded, “God.” Ultimately, the Lord is what keeps them happily married and free from strife in their relationship. They have different personali-
Your Weigh yogurt is “low calorie, low fat, and tastes like ice cream.” Now… that is just the yogurt. They have no control over all the cookie dough, candy, or sprinkles that you pile on top! They offer 8 different flavors of yogurt and some of the flavors are changed out periodically. In the future, Your Weigh Yogurt Shoppe plans on carrying some sugar-free flavors (with artificial sweeteners) for those who cannot have sugar. Neysa explained, “We are evolving to cater to all of the customers.”
create your own yogurt or smoothie masterpiece “When people come in, we always let them know that we sell frozen yogurt, which is much healthier than ice cream because it’s lower calorie and contains live and active cultures. We tell them that it is a self-serve concept.” “You swirl it, you decorate it with your own toppings, and you weigh it at the end,” explains Neysa. “And you pay by the
ounce (it is 59¢ per ounce). So you can mix and match. You can get a little or you can get a lot. It is kind of fun…. You can put on whatever toppings you want. You can really get creative.” The great thing about Your Weigh yogurt is it is a fraction of the calories compared to other frozen treats. Also, the treats from other shops can cost more per ounce, but people may not realize it because it is portioned and sold for a flat rate. Your Weigh yogurt is self-serve so the more you put in your cup, the more you pay. Neysa explained, “I always tell them ‘by the ounce is a different way to shop, so don’t pack it in unless you want to eat a lot’.” The cups are fairly large so “if you pack it in and add all the toppings, it could weigh more than you think.” Neysa and Scott would rather their customers know in advance than be shocked at the end when they have a treat that weighs a pound. That is a lot of yogurt and yummy toppings! The self-serve feature makes this yogurt shop different from many others. Neysa questioned, “When have you ever heard that you can serve yourself?” “So you have the control of how much you eat and how much you pay.” They had one lady come in the shop for 1 ounce of yogurt and she happily paid 59¢.” People seem to like having the control. The smoothies work a little differently. They are one price, $5.00 for 24 oz. “We give them a cup and they put whatever toppings they want in that cup and fill it up. They pick out up to 2 flavors of yogurt and we get it in liquid form and

make it for them. So it is kind of fun. Some crazy things come out of here. I had a guy put all these cherries in his cup with the stems and I thought…oh my gosh…but it tasted delicious. You could taste the stem flavor, but because it was so chopped up, it was really good. I was shocked. And I’ve even come up with some really cool coffee smoothies that taste like chocolate coffee that are under 100 calories. So you can really get creative.” Neysa’s favorite thing about running this yogurt shop, besides working along side her husband, is the people (especially the children). She loves children. “It’s a cool business to see these kids get excited about making their own yogurt; it’s really neat.” Neysa remarks, “Even a child can be empowered to make a decision and get what they want and not have to buy a $5.00 yogurt if they don’t want to.” They get to make their own creation and determine the amount they get. About half of their customers are children pulling their parents in to try it. From small children to teenagers, they seem to really enjoy it.
God’s involvement in their daily lives Neysa and Scott start their days with the Word of God. They listen to an audio bible while preparing to open the shop every morning. They pray in the Spirit everyday. Neysa also listens to worship music before her morning workout. She says, “Worship before warfare.” It helps set the mood for the rest of the day. And most nights they try to watch some teachings from various men and women of God. Scott and Neysa strive to spend a lot of time in the Word together. Everyday, Neysa and Scott stand on Isaiah 54:17, “No weapon formed against you shall prosper….” Neysa
Some of the scriptures that they have stood on in the past and stand on today for success: Mark 9:23 3 John 2 Philippians 4:19 1 Peter 2:24 Psalm 91

explains, “When you are in business and you take risks, a lot can come against you.” An example of this happened one Sunday morning when they got to the yogurt shop and their electricity was out (only in their store). They lost about a half day’s wages. In business sometimes these distractions, as Neysa likes to call them, occur. “So we just focus on the fact that God is bigger than any of that. It doesn’t matter and we have to stay focused.” So, Neysa called out, “Lord, I’m just excited that you’re in charge here because if you weren’t we would be in real trouble; just make something good come out of this mess.” “And within 2 hours an electrician came in that wasn’t ours and who was a Christian. He spent 7 hours fixing our problem and billed us for one hour….”

Through God, they found favor. Then, they stayed open later than usual that night and were able to recoup some of the money lost from being closed. “It was a miracle that we even got the store open….” Several challenges arose when they were first trying to open the shop for business but God provided what was needed. Neysa recalls, “I can’t even tell you how we did it, but we got these doors open.” “A friend came in there when it was a shell and she began praying all around the store. Things turned around after that. We were just praying in the Spirit all over the store.” With the Lord’s help, they were able to open for business! Other distractions have arisen since they opened, but Neysa and Scott still see the blessing at the end.
Yogurt This amazing couple doesn’t allow the attempts of the enemy to take their focus off of God or His plan for their lives. In times of trials they use their faith. Neysa explained that is why Isaiah 54:17 is so important to her. Everyday she keeps this verse in the forefront of her mind. No matter what the enemy tries to throw their way, they know the Truth – they know what the Word of God says. They stand on His promises and they expect results. “If he [Scott] wasn’t such a strong man of God, it would be difficult to do that,” Neysa explains. God is faithful to perform His Word and His Word will not return void. When challenges arise in business, we can overcome them with God. We overcome the world, the flesh, and the devil by the Blood of the Lamb, and the word of our testimony. Scott and Neysa’s shop is open 7 days a week. However, no matter how busy they are, they still find the time to go to church, read the Word, and listen to Christian programs. They put God first place in their lives.
miracles God has moved greatly in Neysa and Scott’s lives. Neysa explains, “We’ve had many miracles, and one example was when our daughter was run over by a driver of a minivan.” She was only 10 years old at the time. “She was by an ice cream truck and she ran out to get more money and the minivan ploughed her, and she was pinned under the minivan.” She was dragged 15 feet in the street. The driver of the ice cream truck had to roll the van off of her. “The oldest boy ran in and said ‘Dad, Dad, Sally was run over!’ He wouldn’t let anybody touch her, he just prayed over her in the Spirit.” A helicopter came and airlifted her to the hospital. “He got to the hospital, not knowing what was happening.” Scott was informed that “she had no injuries, except some road rash.” How Awesome is our God! “All of our kids have had a miracle of some sort!” exclaimed Neysa. The Lord has performed many other healing miracles in Scott and Neysa’s family,

and they know it is because they stand on the Word of God and put Him first in everything they do.
recommendations from experienced entrepreneurs When asked if she would recommend anything to someone wanting to start a business, Neysa suggested - do not be unequally yoked with your business partners (see 2 Cor 6:14). “When I say unequally yoked, I mean even spiritually,” explains Neysa. “You’ve got to look for people who are like-minded.” If you aren’t in the same place spiritually then you probably are not going to pray about situations together. “It’s like a marriage. The same attention you give to dating and meeting the right spouse, you should give to business partners. It’s very difficult because nothing can put a rift in a relationship more than a money issue. I would just recommend that people really get guidance and pray for wisdom.” Neysa and Scott pray before making business decisions. When difficult situations arise they pray for guidance and wisdom and they receive it. When ethical issues arise, Neysa stresses “Do the right thing even if it isn’t the easy path.” It is very important to keep an ethical business. “You have to do the right thing no matter what,” says Neysa.
God is a big God and He’s still got everything. He can resolve everything.” Neysa explains, “It’s a daily renewing of your mind like it says in Romans 12:2” and “sometimes hourly.”
fundraising for ministries Neysa and Scott enjoy being involved in projects to help others. In the future they would like to use the store to raise funds for different ministries; a percentage of the sales for a particular day will go to a certain ministry. Neysa also does “Zumba-thons” to raise money. On December 12 at 7pm, she will be doing a Zumba-thon to raise money for Toys for Tots, here at The Shops at Wiregrass. I have personally created my own Your Weigh yogurt masterpiece and it is quite fun and delicious. I also enjoyed watching others make their own creations with excitement. It is a great concept. I highly encourage you to come out and try Your Weigh yogurt today! See their ad on page 31 for more details. GLORY!
When challenges arise be in one accord seeking God. “I recommend…you stick to that; even if you have a remotely small distraction or big. It doesn’t matter. Healthy Life Overindulging
Simple tip that may help you stop eating
too much food during the holidays when your mind says yes but your body says no
Try drinking more water in between and during your meals. The human body is approximately 60-70% water. The average human should intake about half their body weight in ounces (i.e.100lb body should consume 50oz of water) per day. Consuming more water during and in between meals allows the stomach to feel full thus preventing you from overindulging. The additional consumption of water also makes your muscles more flexible, and your body will feel better. If you don’t like the taste of water try adding lemon or orange to give it some flavor. One more thing, if you start increasing your intake of water I highly recommend you push the majority of it in the first half of your day. That way you won’t be getting up countless times during the night to relieve yourself.

What Does
s Christmas Mean to You?
With the holidays rapidly approaching I pondered what Christmas meant to me personally and to those around me. I realized Christmas means so many different things to each and every person. Many families celebrate the holidays in their own way with special traditions, tree decorating, marathon shopping, gift wrapping, parties and an endless supply of delicious baked treats. This is the time of year that people really seem to embody the spirit of giving and find their way back to loved ones. It’s the season that is filled with joy, excitement, and anticipation. All of this led me to consider…what does the word “Christmas” actually mean, why do we celebrate this wonderful holiday, and what truly captures the essence of the season?
The Word “Christmas” Broken Down
Let’s start by breaking down the word “Christ-mas.” “Christ,” in Greek – Christos – translates to anointed or the anointed one. In Hebrew the word for anointed is mashach (ma-shof) and a derivative of that word is mashiach (mashe-ock) or Messiah. Anointed in the Bible often refers to the rubbing of oil on something or someone to bless the thing or person as holy and it also means to be chosen by divine intervention. The Bible tells us that God chose Jesus, His Son, and anointed Him (see Acts 10:38) to be the Savior of the world and bring eternal life to believers. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16, NKJV) Thus, He was given the name “Jesus the Anointed One” or “Jesus the Messiah.”
Messiah was translated into Greek as Christos and that is why we call Him Jesus Christ. “Mas”, which is derived from the word “mass,” is often used when referring to a large number of people assembling together. An example of this would be a church service, where a group of Christians gather to worship and celebrate God and His Son, Jesus Christ. For me, a church service is a celebration of the wonderful things God has already done for us and for the blessings yet to come, while being assembled with brothers and sisters in Christ. So from the breakdown of the word “Christmas” we can reason that it literally means “Mass of Christ” or “Mass of the Anointed One”. In other words, a group of people gathered together celebrating Jesus Christ. I’ve realized now more than ever that Christmas is much more than a holiday season, it’s a holy season!
Celebrating Christmas The Birth of Jesus
Some might be wondering why exactly do we celebrate Christmas and why on December 25th? We celebrate Christmas to commemorate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. When I was a child I remember my sister and I snuggling up together on Christmas Eve to listen to our father read the stories of Jesus’ birth from the Bible. In Luke 1:26-38 God chose Mary, a virgin who was betrothed

Christmas to Joseph, to carry His Son. The angel Gabriel was sent to Mary, who lived in Nazareth (which is in modern-day Israel), and told her not to be frightened because she found favor with God. The angel told Mary that she would become pregnant through the Holy Spirit and give birth to a son, whom she was to name Jesus. Gabriel told Mary that Jesus would be called the Son of the Most High and that He would reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His Kingdom would never end. In Matthew 1:18-25 an angel of the Lord also visited Joseph and confirmed that Mary was pregnant with the Son of God, who would save His people from their sins and be called Emmanuel (“God with us”). The Bible also explains in Luke 2 that Mary and Joseph had to travel to Judea to register for the census that Caesar required of all of his citizens. Joseph’s lineage was of the family of David and they resided in the city of Bethlehem located within Judea. Mary went into labor while they were in Bethlehem. It is believed that Mary gave birth to Jesus in a stable or barn because the Bible tells us that “…She wrapped Him snugly in strips of cloth and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the village inn” (Luke 2:7, NLT). In Matthew 2:1-12 the Bible reveals that after Jesus was born, a star rose and shined brightly. The wise men of the
Amanda Wright
East saw the star rise and knew it meant the King of the Jews had been born. They traveled to find Jesus by following His star and they were joyful when they found Him. The wise men bowed down to worship Jesus and brought Him gifts of gold, frankincense (incense that burns a sweet smell) and myrrh (expensive perfume). The exact date of Jesus’ birth is not recorded in the Bible or in any other credible document. However, in the 4th century the Roman Church chose December 25th to officially celebrate Christmas, the birth of Jesus. Praise God for the birth of our Savior, the true reason to celebrate Christmas!
Gift Giving
Some believe that the example of the wise men bringing gifts to Jesus is perhaps where the idea of gift giving on Christmas originated from. The wise men were honoring Jesus with their gifts, as they recognized the gift God gave us in Jesus Christ. This is a wonderful way to approach gift giving this Christmas. Let’s keep the gift God gave us at the forefront of our hearts and minds as we honor our loved ones with meaningful gifts instead of just feeling obligated to purchase them something.
History of Santa Claus
Since we are on the subject of gift giving…I would like to explore the history of Santa Claus and how he is related to
this widely celebrated day. I didn’t grow up with visions of Santa and reindeer flying in the sky when I was little due to the fact that I had four older siblings. The truth trickles down really fast! Most people don’t know that “Santa Claus” is a legend derived from an actual man that lived during the 4th century in Myra (modern-day Turkey). This man’s name was Bishop St. Nicholas. He was considered to be a gentle and caring man that was concerned for the poor and especially the children. St. Nicholas was believed to have exemplified Christ-like characteristics, as he was kind, generous and compassionate to those less fortunate. Several different stories are told of St. Nicholas, many of which have no concrete facts to back them up, but they all illustrate his dedication to God by living a self-less life serving others. Most European countries had their own version of the legend of St. Nicholas, each adding their own twist to the story told every year at Christmas. In the 17th century the Dutch immigrated to the New England colonies. Some believe the name “Santa Claus” was derived from the Dutch name of “Sint Nikolaas” (Dutch for St. Nicholas), which was later shortened to “Sinter Klaas.” You can easily see how this evolved into the name “Santa Claus.” Much of what our country is familiar with about Santa was invented by writers and artists in the 19th century from the

various legends told about St. Nicholas, including his red suit, stockings on the fireplace, and a sleigh pulled by reindeer. However, no matter where the mythical figure of Santa Claus came from, the important thing to remember is that Santa symbolizes holiday cheer, love, kindness and generosity. These characteristics are what we can emphasize to the children in our lives, while also explaining to them that Santa is a combination of legends loosely based on a real man that lived hundreds of years ago. In other words, Santa is just a fictitious character from the imaginations of individuals formulated for amusement and fantasy at Christmas time.
Real vs. Fiction
As Christians, it is important that we distinguish Jesus Christ from fictitious characters like Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy. As our children grow up let’s help them understand that Jesus Christ was a real man, the Son of God, and is our Lord and Savior. We can teach them that they can turn to Jesus in times of trouble and that He is not an imaginary character like Santa. When our children ask us if Santa Claus is real, let’s think about how our answer will affect their relationship with Jesus. I believe we can be honest with our children without ruining the excitement of Christmas. After all, shouldn’t children know that “every good and perfect gift is from above …” (James 1:17, NIV).
The Best Gift Ever Given
The best gift ever given was from God when He gave His only Son so we could have everlasting life. This Christmas, let’s continue to celebrate the Lord’s offering and honor Him by emulating the man Jesus was. We can do this by demonstrating Christ-like qualities through loving, giving, and caring for those around us - especially our brothers and sisters in Christ and those in need. Christmas evokes a spirit of giving and selflessness because Christ selflessly gave His life, so that we could live more abundantly. What an awesome gift! Truly, the best things in life are free. Jesus was, and is, a gift from our Father in Heaven to all people who will accept Him as Lord and Savior. It is important
that we reflect on this with our families during this holy season and give thanks to God for Jesus and all of the blessings we have received.
Time with Family
One of the most significant blessings the Lord has given me is my family. Christmas creates the perfect time to gather with loved ones and enjoy their company. This is my favorite time of year because I know I will be with family members that I don’t get to see often. We spend most of our time just talking and laughing with each other and reminiscing about old family stories. Many families, including mine, have traditions during this season that really express the spirit of Christmas. I remember always being so excited on Christmas Eve to the point of begging our parents to let us open just one present! They always gave in and to this day, we still open one gift on Christmas Eve night. But now it’s the kids running in yelling, “Just one present, please!” We all smile because it wasn’t so long ago that it was us running in our pajamas with a present in hand. My parents taught us to be a loving and close-knit family. We were raised to understand that family is one of the most important things in life. We understood that the holidays were much more about being together and enjoying each other’s company than about presents. Even now that we are all grown and have families
of our own, we still make the effort to get together every year for Christmas. The house is filled with laughter, sweet smells, and rambunctious kids running around playing. My parents smile ear to ear during this special time of year when all of their children and grandchildren are under one roof.
+ Did You Know? Red represents the blood Jesus shed for the salvation of all mankind (John 19:34) Green is the color of eternal life that Jesus made possible through His sacrifice (John 3:16-17) The “Christmas Tree” is an Evergreen tree, that can withstand the winter and remains green all year long, which also symbolizes eternal life The candle flame, tree lights, and star on top of the tree remind us of the star that rose when Jesus was born to proclaim to the world that the promised Messiah had arrived (Matthew 2:2)
We can’t seem to bake enough cookies and brownies for the never ending hands dipping into the cookie jar or pulling them right off the cookie sheet while they are still warm. And it never fails, every year someone sticks their finger right in the middle of the pies just to make sure they are good enough for everyone else

Giving to Others in Need
In the past couple of years, I have learned how important it is to show others love at Christmas time. I now have a new tradition. I buy gifts, bring food, or give money to someone in need through a local charity drive or directly to someone I have come into contact with. I have realized that these contributions are my favorite gifts to give because I am able to show others God’s love through my actions. Someone I know brings his young children to the toy store every year to pick out any toy that they want. They bring this toy to a children’s hospital or a local shelter and give that special toy to a child in need. This family is teaching their children to show love to others, and they believe kids are never too young to start. These children already understand that Christmas should be a time of giving to others especially to those in need. This is the kind of tradition I would like to start with my children in the future. I’ve heard many similar traditions as this one, and it just warms my heart. It’s a great idea to teach the children in our lives about compassion this Christmas through our actions toward others. I encourage you and your family to find a special charity in your community and bring gifts, food, or clothing to help a family in need this Christmas. The most rewarding gifts you can give come straight from the heart. to eat! The kids end up being covered in red and green icing as they make master pieces out of sugar cookies. We don’t even bother telling them not to lick their fingers...already done, thanks to our wonderful example! In the evenings, our family gathers around the table to play cards and board games. It just wouldn’t feel like Christmas if we didn’t play at least one game! The kids pull out the board games and we have such a great time playing with child-like enthusiasm. Then, the women sneak off to wrap all of those last minute presents with a stash of brownies to energize the wrapping marathon.
Last year was the first Christmas my husband and I celebrated together as a married couple, so I was able to experience his family traditions. For my husband’s family, the holidays are all about good food and great company. His family goes four-wheeling every year on the evening of Christmas Eve out in the country where they live in Texas. It is thrilling and they all have a blast! Then, there is the “white-elephant” present exchange. Watching this play for gifts is hilarious and from this one hour of fun we have memories that will last a lifetime. These are just some of my family’s traditions at Christmas time, all

So what does Christmas mean to you? For me it’s about praising our Lord Jesus and giving thanks to our Heavenly Father for bestowing such a wonderful and glorious gift on us; it’s about spending time with my family and cherishing the loved ones in my life; it’s about joy and laughter; it’s about giving to others; it’s about serving God with my whole body, heart, and soul. Christmas embodies love and God is Love. So to me, Christmas is all about God. Praise the Lord! He has given me so many reasons to celebrate Jesus Christ on Christmas and every day after! Merry Christmas! GLORY!

Giving and
Receiving
I “For this is the way God loved the world: He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 NET)
t’s that time of year again. Christmas trees are going up, lights are being hung, and fireplaces are lit. Well maybe not so much on the fireplaces here in Tampa, but you get my point. Christmas is here. So why do we celebrate Christmas anyway? If you were to ask random people walking the street you might be shocked to hear some of the answers. Regardless, the correct answer is to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, and how do we celebrate that? Well, the best way would be to emulate our Father in Heaven and give to others. In John 3:16, it shows the greatest manifestation of love is to give. “For this is the way God loved the world: He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have
32 OverflowMag.com Dec 2009 / Jan 2010
eternal life” (John 3:16, NET, emphasis added). Think about that for a moment. If you have children then you understand how hard it is to even imagine giving up, I mean really giving up one of your children. It is difficult to fully comprehend the magnitude of God’s love for us. What God did for us is amazing and a whole lot better than God just shouting down from Heaven, “Hey all you down there on earth, suffering and battling sin, I just want you to know I really, really love you.” Thank goodness that is not how He chose to express His love for us. God didn’t send Jesus to condemn us but to save us. “He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all—how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?”
Give (Romans 8:32, NIV) What an amazing gift! “Thank God for His Son––a gift too wonderful for words!” (2 Corinthian 9:15, NLT) Other Ways To Give When I mentioned imitating our Father by giving, I didn’t mean that we should pull out a loan and go into debt in order to give to loved ones. There are many different ways to give and some of these ways don’t even cost money. “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2, NIV). This scripture reveals other ways to give. The word burdens here refers to pressure, or load, like trying to please all the family that comes to visit, battling sickness, seeking employment, or even trying to keep positive when buried in debt. This Christmas let’s not overlook the opportunity to help others that may need things as simple as a caring ear to listen, some encouraging words, extra hands to help decorate, or maybe some money so they can give a special gift to a loved one. If we want to experience the real flavor of Christmas, then we should let God use us to alleviate someone else’s burden and fulfill the Law of Christ. When we do this, the anointing is activated in our lives and all that we do becomes blessed. This is the time of year to do great things for others, but keep in mind we don’t have to limit ourselves to helping others just during the Christmas season. Let’s spread that cheerful attitude of helping others throughout the entire year. Get blessed by being a blessing. Receiving The other side of giving is receiving. As adults sometimes we have trouble receiving from others because we put too much thought behind it. We may have thoughts like why are they giving me this, what do they want, or I can’t accept that, it’s too much and I don’t deserve it. We need to learn to receive the gifts that are willingly given to us. Someone may walk up to us and try to give us money or a gift. We should not hesitate; just gladly receive what is freely given. When we are willing and obedient to the Lord’s direction, it is through joyful receiving that God will make us a pipeline
Chris Cherp of blessings to others. The Lord hears our prayers and it is not uncommon for Him to use fellow brothers and sisters in Christ to answer them. We must learn how to receive from others and most importantly from God. Hindering Ourselves God has already done everything for us, but sometimes our minds can limit us. From the time we were born we began to build our intellect. Unfortunately, most of the time our spiritual growth lacks significantly in comparison. As we grow up we often allow our intelligence to dominate our way of thinking, which can hinder our ability to receive from God. If we can get past the limits of our intellect and have child-like faith, then we will be open to receive all the gifts God provided for us: salvation, healing, peace, love, joy, prosperity, and the list goes on. If God was going to hold anything back from us, believe me, it wouldn’t be these special gifts; it would have been His only begotten Son. But He didn’t and that is the good news. “Child-like” Receiving This Christmas season I encourage us all to pay special attention to the children around us as they receive gifts from loved ones. Children receive gifts with little to no thought or hesitation; it’s great to see. They just tear into them and that is exactly how God wants us to receive the gifts that He has given to us through Jesus Christ. “I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it” (Luke 18:17, NIV). Let’s get back to receiving like little children do when they put their hands in the air expressing their desire to have whatever mommy and daddy have. When we do, we can begin truly receiving the gifts God has already given us. Next time praise music is playing, lift your hands in the air like a little child does and begin receiving God’s gifts. It’s time to begin receiving the multitude of gifts God has already given to us through Jesus Christ. Let’s act as children do when receiving gifts, and tear into these gifts with joy and excitement. Merry Christmas! Glory! Dec 2009 / Jan 2010 Love+Faith+Hope

Salvation It’s FREE!
The Most Important Decision In Your Life If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
(Romans 10:9) You’re not alone. In the Word of God found in the Bible, God says He will never leave you nor forsake you. No matter what you’re experiencing in life now or even what you may have done in the past, God loves you and wants you to be His child so He can take care of you - forever. If you have an empty feeling that can’t be filled by anything that you’ve tried (alcohol, drugs, sex, food...) then please let me introduce you to the only thing that can fill that void, Jesus Christ. If you want to invite Jesus into your life then say this prayer out loud in faith. Father God, I come before you in the Name of Jesus. Your Word says, “Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved” and “if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Acts 2:21; Romans 10:9). Father God, I believe your Word is truth and I stand on it now. Please forgive me for all my sins and unrighteousness. Today I make Jesus my Lord and Savior and I believe God raised Him from the dead, and He is seated at the right hand of the Father in heaven. Father I ask that you fill me with your Holy Spirit to guide and teach me as I walk this earth and grow spiritually (Luke 11:13; Luke 12:12). I thank You for making a place for me in Your Kingdom, please guide me in the direction that will eternally please You. In Jesus Name, Amen. Dec 2009 / Jan 2010 Love+Faith+Hope

Peter Rivera Age: 62 Victorious Life Church
I am “UNHOOKED” At the age of 14, I started using marijuana. By the age of 15, I was in a gang and to be welcomed like everyone else, I started using heroin. I took the bait. The life I led was at times dangerous. I saw people get killed in front of me; I saw friends die from overdoses. I struggled with the drug culture. I did 21 day cures and would come out clean, then would go back and do it again. I could not stop thinking of the drug; it was like I was possessed. Sometimes it would seem to be a very lonely life. I really had no friends, no family; nobody wanted anything to do with me. My mother would not allow me in her house because of the fear of me stealing something. For awhile I lived in abandoned houses and wore the same clothes for months. My son was born on September 23, 1973. I abandoned him after his birthday because I was hooked on heroin and had to pursue the drug. Heroin was more important to me than my own son. I was in a fight and the drug was winning. I tried everything in man’s world to get off the drug. My mother even tried witchcraft. I have been shot and shot at. I later went on to cocaine and the fight continued. I did cocaine until the year 1990. At that time I was asked to go to church and I kept saying that one day I would go.

When my daughter Ashlie was born, her mother told me that we needed to go to church. So to get her off my back as we were driving, I just pointed to a church that we were passing and told her that we would go there. I had never seen this church before. When I went to this church I met my brother who I never knew I had. That was when God began working on me. At that time, I gave all the drugs up. For 29 years I used drugs and was in the world of drugs. I was 44 years old when I gave it up. I am now 62. I thank God everyday for my salvation and I pray for all those that are involved in drugs or any other addiction and that it will not take them as long as it took me. I thank God everyday for my children who inspire me to do right and to get closer to Him who saved me.

Scriptures I stand on to overcome
Mark 11:24 (NKJV) Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them. We asked in prayer for the conception of our child. We believed and firmly stood on this scripture and 15 days later we found out we were pregnant. Nine months later we got to meet our son and hold our gift from God.

Scriptures I stand on to overcome
1 Kings 19:19 So he departed from there, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he was with the twelfth. Then Elijah passed by him and threw his mantle on him.

“To me, I am Elisha working for the Lord. The way Elijah threw his mantle [cloak] on Elisha is like Jesus putting His hands on me, letting me know that He wants me in His world and He wants me to have a personal relationship with Him. He wants me to plow into scripture so that I will know His Word, and with the help of the Holy Spirit in me, I will be able to serve Him better.”
Psalm 23:4 (NIV) Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. Jeremiah 33:3 (NIV) ‘Call to Me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’ While walking down life’s pathways and valleys, it has been because of the Lord Jesus Christ that I have feared no evil. When I have called out to Him, He has answered with great and mighty things!

Still Busy by Tommy Burrus
“Be still, and know that I am God….” (Psalms 46:10 NIV)
Be still? You’ve got to be kidding! Do you have any idea how much I have to do? I’d love nothing better than the chance to be still—but I can’t schedule anything like that for the next 2 months. Does that sound familiar? We have to juggle our career, family, and activities, and often we find that there isn’t room to squeeze God into our lives. Several years ago, a friend and fellow church member was installing an air conditioning unit for my home. However, when he was finished, the unit didn’t work. I stood by nervously as he looked it over. After several minutes, he looked at me sheepishly and said, “I realize now what I didn’t do.” I expected some technical explanation that I wouldn’t
understand, but instead he confessed that he hadn’t prayed before he installed it. He bowed his head silently for a few moments and then set to work. He found the problem in no time, and the unit worked fine afterwards. Does that seem simplistic to you? It has been my experience that I have more time to include God in my daily tasks than I have time to redo tasks that I tried to do alone. On top of that, I am at peace rather than stressed. As John Bunyan said, “You can do more than pray after you’ve prayed, but you cannot do more than pray until you have prayed.” Jesus took time to get away alone. He was God in the flesh—Emmanuel—yet it was still important for Him to spend private time with His Heavenly Father. He had constant demands upon His time, and every minute of His life was

precisely scheduled and ordained. He told the disciples in John 4:34 (TLB), “My nourishment comes from doing the will of God who sent Me, and from finishing His work.” It was difficult at times for Jesus to get alone with the Father. People sought Him out and hounded Him constantly. There was so much excitement that it was difficult for Him at times to minister within a city. In Mark 1, He sets up in a wilderness area, and people come to Him from all over. Mark 6:31 reveals that there were so many people coming to Him that He and His disciples didn’t even have time to eat. Jesus and His disciples at times retreated beyond the boundaries of Israel for a respite, but in every place there were people who needed His ministry. When Jesus received the news that John the Baptist had been murdered by Herod, He sought refuge across the Sea of Galilee, but the multitudes followed Him. In fact, it was this occasion in which Jesus took the five loaves and two fish and multiplied them to feed five thousand men plus women and children. What is clear by a careful study of our Savior’s life is that He prioritized time alone with God. That being His priority underscores the importance of it in our lives. One of my favorite things about the New Year is the new calendar. Actually, I should say calendars. Why is it that we need to have so many these days? Now I have to schedule time to coordinate my various calendars, but I digress. Without a calendar, one year would run right into the next without much notice. Days are much different because of the whole day and night thing, but a calendar brings an end for us to the previous year and offers up a whole new year. The new calendar is a chance for us to simplify some things. Every block represents a day in which we need to be still and know God more fully. Each square is an opportunity, a chance for us to let God reveal Himself to us and through us. Before we fill those blocks, now would be a really good time for one of those “Be still” moments.
Before we crowd our new calendars with all the appointments and commitments, let’s remember that our lives, like our Savior’s life, have a divine purpose. We have a mission on this planet. Paul made reference to that fact in 2 Timothy 4:7. Hebrews 12:1 personalizes it for each of us as a “particular race that God has set before us.” In order to achieve the fulfillment and peace that comes from doing God’s will, we need His help. Before we can get busy doing His will, we begin by being still. We need to harmonize ourselves to His purposes. We need to receive the guidance and wisdom that only He can offer. Most of all, we depend upon His power and blessings to accomplish the work. These are part of the benefits we receive when we take the time to be still and reflect upon Him. We can take control of our schedules and our own lives. We really can. We don’t have to be under the dominion of our “To Do List,” but in order to gain control we must first yield control to God. As Jesus taught in the Sermon on the Mount, we must put God and His kingdom first in our lives, and then He will order the other activities. One word of caution: when God is in charge, some of our activities may end up on the chopping block (Deep breath!), and there’s nothing wrong with that. He is God. Know that and revel in that. When He alters our activities, He has a better plan. GLORY!

Why Worry! By Stephanie Cherry
Do not rush around all day And be in such a hurry Can’t you hear our dear Lord say My children “Do not worry?” Why do you fuss, why do you fret And bring on all that stress? With God your every need is met And troubles seem much less. Look, the birds they soar so high Each one is safe up there! They have no worries as they fly Because they are in His care. Why can’t we be like a bird Avoiding all the trouble? If we don’t heed God’s Word It’ll make our problems double Oh to be secure in Him With soul and mind at peace Then our hearts will surely sing “My worries can now cease!”
