Renewal Through Relationship

Tampa Bay Christian Counseling Center is a Christian counseling practice offering comprehensive services to the Tampa Bay area. Working with clients of all ages, our counselors help guide individuals and couples to relational wholeness in Christ.

At Tampa Bay Christian Counseling Center, our counselors create an environment where people can be themselves, knowing that the counseling process is built on trust, hope, care and most importantly Jesus Christ. We walk alongside our clients in their spiritual journeys, going beyond outward symptoms to the inward cause and inviting genuine change in Christ.

We believe that the best counseling isn’t based on a number of steps or easy answers. It is a process that helps people identify where they have built a life apart from God and that calls them to an authentic relationship with Him.

Tampa Bay Christian Counseling Center believes there is a profound difference in content and results between counseling based in God’s Word and secular counseling approaches. We offer real, Biblically based counseling that presents solutions to people’s problems in contrast to symptom focused psychotherapy which ultimately does not look to God’s Word for solutions.

It is a relationship where we enter deeply into the lives of those in pain and crisis to bring them to a place where they can love God, love others and love themselves. We believe lasting change and personal wholeness have their genesis within a relationship with Christ.

We believe every child is a story to be read and not written. Every child is born with a unique gift and identity, designed and given by God for a specific destiny. A child’s natural talents and tendencies are a result of this gift. When this gift is honored and their identity nurtured, children and adults fulfill their destiny by displaying that facet of the glory of God that was intended. Children are created with a specific assignment that will change the world around them. Identity without knowledge and wisdom leaves a child without ability, and academics without identity leaves a child without direction. When we embrace academic excellence and engage their identity, we will develop life long learners who are preeminent in their field.

FROM THE EDITOR

Dear Friends, This month our focus is on joy. The Lord has pressed on our hearts how important it is to have joy, no matter what circumstances we are facing in our lives. I encourage you to read all the articles we have on joy this month. They each give a different perspective but all reveal the same truth: Joy is attained through our relationship with Jesus Christ, and we shouldn’t allow anyone or anything to steal our joy. Our cover this month features an awesome group of young Christian artists called Focused. The story of this anointed trio will inspire you as you read “Focused on God” on page 14. It is amazing to see what God is doing with the youth today. Check out the recipes on page 34 and try to make dad some delicious baby back ribs and peach cobbler for Father’s Day. Do something special for dad this month to thank him for all that he has done for you. I also wanted to share with you something that the Lord has been reminding me of a lot lately. He has told me several times to never be too busy for what He tells me to do. Sometimes, we get so busy with our schedules that we don’t stop to do what the Lord has been prompting us to do. I will tell you a quick story of how the Lord first revealed to me how my busyness was

interfering with what He told me to do. One day I had a meeting later in the morning but before the meeting I had several things to do: take my son to school, check email, stop at the store, etc. I was running around that morning trying to get everything done. On my way out of the store as I was walking towards the parking lot, I saw a woman placing her children in the car. The Lord began pressing on my heart to buy her some diapers. I kind of laughed to myself and was thinking, “I don’t have time for that; I am so busy.” So, I passed her by and got into my truck. I began pulling past her car and I sensed a great heaviness over me. The Lord was telling me, “Don’t mess up this opportunity to help someone.” So, I stopped and got out. I talked to the lady and told her that the Lord wanted me to bless her by buying some diapers for her children. The lady was so surprised and grateful. I was able to minister to her for a little while and then went back into the store and got her the diapers. Then, the Lord said very clearly to me in my heart: “DO NOT EVER BE TOO BUSY FOR WHAT I TELL YOU TO DO!” It was an eye opener for me. I didn’t realize I was running around so busy that I wasn’t even listening to God sometimes. I wanted to share this with you because I know this story will help others who get so busy and don’t realize they aren’t listening to God’s promptings. Happy Father’s Day to all the daddies and especially to our amazing Father in Heaven! In His Love,

Amie Cherp

Glory to God! Talk about growing in faith. This past month we had the pleasure of seeing our awesome Father in Heaven do great things that only He is able to do. One of the greatest revelations we have received so far is that God works best when we rest in Him. We have learned to allow God to work on our behalf and to quit trying to do it on our own. This is a revelation that the Body of Christ will have to receive in these last days in order to achieve all that we have been called to do. Overflow would like to say thank you to Michele K. with Busch Gardens, as well as Karol and Eva with Karol Cordero Hand Crafted Jewelry for making us feel welcome at this year’s Glory at the Gardens events. We were able to rub shoulders with amazing brothers in Christ like Matthew West and Brandon Heath. Not to mention, the thousands of believers that came out over the course of the three weekends to praise and worship our amazing God, as one Body. A special thanks to God for stirring the hearts of believers throughout the greater Tampa Bay area for His magazine through which we serve Him. It came as great news to hear that 12,000 Overflow Magazines were completely distributed and almost gone by the middle of the month. Only God can make growth like this happen. We want to congratulate Elizabeth. She won the May contest for a pair of tickets in the lower 100 section to “A Night of Hope” with Joel Osteen at the St. Pete Times Forum on June 4th. We hope you enjoy the evening. God always shows up in an awesome way at those events. This past month we’ve had the continued pleasure of meeting fellow brothers and sisters in Christ that have shared their life-changing God stories. These stories are submitted to minister to others - giving Tampa Bay hope that they too can overcome all things through Jesus Christ. Thank you to all the willing and obedient children of God who have taken the time and effort to write and submit their God stories to share with others. No matter what you may think when you’re writing your stories, they DO matter and they WILL minister to others! If you would like to see your church information listed in the Local Church Section of Overflow or would like to have Overflow distributed at your church, please have a church representative contact us at contact@overflowmag.com for more information. Begin to rest in the Lord today and watch how He makes the impossible -- possible. With Love in Christ, Team Overflow

1 Chronicles 16:23-24 (NKJV)

“...Proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day. Declare His glory among the nations, His wonders among all peoples.

Just Believe Recently, I have been really seeking God’s direction in a number of areas in my life. My wife and I had already prayed but I felt like I needed to do something, anything but I didn’t know what. During this time I kept hearing a song by the name of “Counting on God” by Desperation Band. Part of the lyrics to the song say, “Joy unspeakable that won’t go away and just enough strength to live for today, so I never have to worry what tomorrow will bring ‘cause my faith is on solid rock, I’m counting on God....” This song truly ministered to me throughout the week. I got the track and played it while speaking those words over and over again, all week long. Sunday morning, as my family and I were getting ready for church I said to my wife, “Wouldn’t that be something if they play that song at church today?” Sure enough, the second song that was played was “Counting on God!” I was ushering at the time and happened to be facing my wife and our eyes met as I was filled with tears of joy. I felt like God in Heaven came down and gave me a huge hug telling me everything is going to be all right, all that I have to do is believe in Him. I do. Glory to our loving Father in Heaven! >>> Chris, Wesley Chapel

The Provider

Love Rains My wife and I got married in January and had a beach wedding in Naples, FL with an outdoor reception. Of course, there was the threat of bad weather, but we were so certain that God wanted us to be together. We knew that if we prayed about it, we would have perfect weather. Well, before our wedding we checked the weekly forecast and saw an 80% chance of rain. We didn’t have any prior backup plans (except God), and during the days leading up to the wedding, we had to decide whether or not to rent tents for our reception. My wife and I prayed a prayer of faith with our family and told the hotel not to rent any tents in spite of the forecast. I woke up on the day of the wedding and saw clouds in the sky. I checked the weather forecast and it looked like there was some sort of force field keeping the rain north of Ft. Myers. I prayed that God would keep it north, and He surely did. Not one drop of rain fell on us and we even saw the sun at the ceremony. Our reception came to a close at around 11:00 p.m. and we drove to another hotel. Just as we went into our room, it rained like it was the middle of July. The timing of the rain just confirmed that God had His hand in it all along. Our faith was tested to trust in Him, and like always, He came through. Our faith has grown because of it and we have a sweet wedding story that is full of His glory! >>> Ryan W.

One day I went to work without having breakfast, I was 6 months pregnant and without money. I prayed that morning and relied on the Lord to meet my needs. I sat at my desk hungry, looking at my computer. Suddenly, my boss told me to call a restaurant because he wanted to buy breakfast for all the staff. He is Jehovah Jireh, our Provider! >>>G.B., Tampa

Daughter Returned I had a prodigal daughter who 5 years ago was not in a good place. She has since returned home and is living for God like never before. It is the most awesome thing to see the keeping power of God over the years, protecting and loving her. She is walking with the LORD and rejoicing every day in her newfound love of Christ Jesus. I stood on specific scriptures and prayed in the Spirit a lot. I did spiritual warfare and didn’t lose hope in the power of Jesus Christ. The only things I can take to Heaven with me are my children. My daughter has returned and I am blessed! >>>Anonymous, Tampa

Taking it Back God has worked many miracles in my life; however, for over twenty years I was blind to them. I have suffered loss that most people will never experience in their lives. Both of my parents were alcoholics and did not live together. My step-grandfather (who abused me for years) and my grandmother helped my mother raise me. At the age of five I lost my grandmother, and a couple years later I lost my aunt. I became a prostitute at the age of fourteen and was experimenting with drugs. At the age of fifteen I met who I thought was my knight in shining armor. We were in love or so we thought. At the age of sixteen he introduced me to cocaine, and a year later we were married. When I was eighteen I got pregnant. My father died while I was pregnant, and if it had not been for the baby, I don’t think I could have handled my father’s passing. Six months later my mother passed away, and shortly after that my step-grandfather passed away. It was around that time that I found out my husband was cheating on me.

raise my daughter. They allowed me to visit her so I thought it was a good arrangement. About six years later, the woman that was raising my daughter started smoking crackcocaine. Her husband took my daughter and moved to north Florida. Now I had lost all three of my children and I was back on the streets. My husband was released from prison but messed up again. This time, he was sentenced to twenty years in prison and I was so alone and hopeless. During the next twenty years, many other terrible things happened to me. However, none of this was enough to make me stop using drugs. I had been court ordered to get treatment and while there I met a friend who introduced me to Ruben. For many years Ruben and I did drugs together. Our lives were out of control and we fought often. Most men would have left me but for some reason we stuck it out together and today

we are clean and sober. Ruben is the type of man every woman dreams of finding and God blessed me by placing him in my life. There were many times when I thought I could never be happy or live a normal life, but I’m happy to say that today God has given it all back to me and more. During some of my lowest times I had a vision of Jesus standing in front of me with his arms extended out to me. I know God allowed me to see Jesus as a sign that some day everything would be all right. I have been through some of the worst things anyone could endure. I know in my heart and soul that if it were not for the grace of God, I never would have made it to the other side. Today I am alive and happy and able to cope with whatever comes my way. God has given it all back to me and this time I’m giving all the glory to Him. To anyone out there who thinks they are all alone...you’re not. >>> L.W., Tampa

By the time my son was two years old, my husband and I were hooked on crackcocaine. We ended up living in our car with our son. My husband resorted to robbing to make money for our habit. Eventually he was arrested and sentenced to nine years in prison. I lost custody of my son to his family. I was on the streets with no one to help me. I had a bad drug problem and I was four months pregnant with our second child. I spent much of my time walking the streets looking for drugs. I even slept in an abandoned truck. When my daughter was born I couldn’t even bring her home from the hospital; I had no home. Some friends were able to help me for a little while. When my daughter was around six months old I moved in with an old friend. He too was a drug addict but he gave me a place to live. Then I got pregnant with my third child by another man and the baby was privately adopted. Two years later my friend died, so good friends of his (clean friends) agreed to

Peace

“This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24 (NKJV)

and Joy in Christ >>> BY AMANDA WRIGHT

I

have often been asked, “Why are you so happy all the time?” This seems like an odd question for someone to ask, but unfortunately, in the times we are living in, it is not. Sometimes I just smile and think about God and other times, I boldly say, “Because of Jesus.” Sadly, many people focus too much on the “have-not’s” and the “what if’s” instead of focusing on the One who made us. As Christians we have the ability to live day to day in complete peace and joy. I’ve learned that joy is much more than being happy because happiness is an emotion in the moment, while joy is an everlasting state of mind and heart. We find that true joy in only one place – Jesus Christ. We can live with a smile on our face and peace in our hearts because we have the blessings of the Lord. We do not have to be fearful when listening to the news reports and people talking of recession and job loss because we are children of the Most High God. We should have faith that we are taken care of by our Father. We can open our Bibles and find verse after verse that gives us many reasons not to live in fear or worry. God does not want us to walk around fearful of what is going on in the world or of what could happen. We know this because our Father states many times in His Word to “fear not,” and He also sent His only Son to redeem us from the curse of the law. I’ll give you one scriptural example that encompasses why God did not intend for His children to live in fear or worry: “And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19, NKJV). “All your need” includes everything you could possibly require, so why worry?

I have come to understand that I am not of this world. Jesus said in John 18:36 (NKJV) “My Kingdom is not of this world” and as believers, we are a part of the Kingdom of God through Jesus. We do not have to settle for what the worldly system has to offer; the Lord’s system is above all things. God makes a way for His people out of what seems like no way. Jesus teaches us that if we ask the Father to fulfill our needs in His Name, believe it, then we will receive what we ask. In John 16:24 (NKJV) Jesus adds, “Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.” God wants us to be overjoyed and blessed abundantly. He does not want to just meet our needs; He wants to go over and above all our expectations. He is a really BIG God! What are your needs compared to the earth and everything in it that He created? He takes care of all the animals on this planet and gives us breath every day. He keeps the sun shining and the earth turning. When we can wrap our minds around the enormity of God’s power and let it sink into our hearts, our spirits will be at peace. Let’s chose to live a life of expectancy, knowing God is working on our behalf all the day through. Praise God! Just thinking about that alone brings joy to my life. What do we have to worry about? “… If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31, NKJV)

faith - joy will burst through and make itself known to all who see us. God wants us to understand that we have nothing to worry about if we roll our burdens onto Him (see Psalm 55:22 and 1 Peter 5:7). If we believe that He is the God of more than enough, then we can let the peace of God rule in our hearts (Colossians 3:15). Freedom from the burdens of this world brings the peace God intended His children to live their lives with. When we take God at His Word, we will experience the greatest freedom we’ve ever known. So let’s wake up each day and rejoice because our Father has given us another day to fulfill His mighty plan for our lives. Let’s make a choice to start the day in thanks to the Lord. Let’s make a choice to believe what He said in His Word. Let’s make a choice to roll our burdens onto Him. Let’s make a choice to follow His lead for our lives and live for Him. There is so much peace knowing that the Peace-Giver is working on our behalf and that peace gives place to joy. I encourage you to keep the Word of God before your eyes and in your heart, as His Word is what strengthens your faith. Spend time, without distractions, in prayer, in worship, in the Word, or just by being still. Focus your mind and heart on God, and you will see that in the presence of God there is fullness of joy (Acts 2:28). Glory!

Once we come to understand the greatness of our Father and that we can weather all storms with Christ, we will obtain peace and joy. Psalm 112:7 tells us not to be afraid or fear bad news because our hearts should be steadfast, trusting in the Lord. When we trust in God, believe His Word, and stand in

on God

O

verflow was inspired and overjoyed after spending some time with Holy Zone Records and a few of its freshfaced artists. We learned that the purpose of Holy Zone Records is to spread the Word of God and as Chip Flores, the founder, shared, “to offer a positive alternative” to the music out on the streets today. This record label consists of “holy Hip-Hop, R&B, Jazz, Rock, and all edifying music.” In the last few years we have seen Christian music touch the lives of many who would not have been otherwise exposed to Jesus Christ. We sensed this call on the lives of these young people to carry out the mission of spreading the Gospel in their own unique way. Whether you are drawn to this type of music or not, there is no denying that the melodies and lyrics created by these artists are inspired by God and they are reaching those who might otherwise be unreachable.

Launch of Holy Zone

Holy Zone Records was founded in the Bronx in 2000 by Chip with an adult contemporary group called Turning Point. His wife, Denise, was a part of this group that was formed among friends to sing praises to the Lord. Chip and Denise have two children who were frequently exposed to music through church and through rehearsals and performances by Turning Point. Before long, the children were singing along. Both children were also involved in the children’s choir at church. They realized that Kelly, their daughter, had a powerful voice, and they wanted her to be able to share that gift from the Lord. Chip and Denise even saw the hand of God on their son, Adam, who at the time of his first debut was only eight years old. Chip wrote lyrics for a rap in one of the songs to be performed by Turning Point and Adam was given the part. By the time Kelly was

12, Holy Zone Records redirected their attention toward the youth. They started a new group called Focused. Along with Kelly, there were four other young people involved in the group. We asked Kelly, “Why the name Focused?” and she responded, “Because we are focused on God.” The Flores family moved from the Bronx to the Tampa area in 2004. The group started again in 2006 with Kelly, her brother Adam, and a friend Ray Clark. With the mixing of Kelly’s beautiful voice, Ray’s guitar skills, Adam’s vocals, and both the guys’ rap lyrics, a new Focused was born. After talking with these inspiring teenage artists and listening to their honest responses, we were amazed at the depth of their spiritual walk with the Lord and the clarity they have for their lives. They are all headed on the same path - a life serving the Lord.

KellyKelz, A-FLO, and Ray-Ray

When speaking with Focused, I realized something that all three of them have in common – humility. I also noticed that they were soft-spoken, sweet, and quick to give any and all credit to God. The light of Jesus Christ is found beaming out of each one of their faces. It was so refreshing to be in the presence of young people so filled with the Holy Spirit and who move on every opportunity to share God’s love with those around them. Kelly was given the nickname KellyKelz in middle school and now at nearly 20 years old, the name has stayed with her. She just completed her second year at Trinity College of Florida where she is studying the Bible and taking courses for counseling. Kelly revealed a desire to be a full-time Christian singer and believes that her schooling will help her in that endeavor, on and off the stage. She has seen how her singing has helped people and she knows

it’s the ministry the Lord has blessed her with. Isn’t this what Christian music is all about? People relate to the lyrics and this brings them to a closer relationship with Jesus Christ. Kelly spends some of her free time doing “typical girl stuff” - going to the mall, hanging with friends, and catching up on the latest through MySpace, twitter, and facebook. What sets her apart from most young people is the fact that she devotes a large portion of her time to the Lord in prayer, in His Word, and in worship.

Adam is 17 years old and just graduated from Wesley Chapel High School where he was the leader of the Fish Club. Adam explained “it is a Christian club [where we are] trying to get the Word out and give a positive message” to both believers and nonbelievers. This was a little surprising because he seemed quiet and a little shy. But further into the interview his deep voice and carefully selected words gave the impression of a strength not found within himself, but in his relationship with Jesus Christ.

Where did Adam’s nickname come from? He simply answered, “Adam Flores, so A-FLO and the FLO since I rap too.” Adam also explained what he does for fun, “I’m just like any other normal kid. PS3 is a great way to consume time and I like to eat!” Definitely not your normal kid…PS3, okay, maybe in some ways, but Adam’s head is full of lyrics prompted by God’s Word and he is motivated to share them. How many 17 year old do you know that already have their future planned in their hearts? Yes, heart, not head. He is ready to serve the Lord in whatever capacity God guides him. Ray, or Ray-Ray as most people call him, is 19 years old. He is the type of guy people just enjoy being around. His smile is contagious and the joy of Christ radiates through him. He just spent this past year in an internship at Victorious Life Church to become a youth pastor in the future. Ray also participates in the youth worship team, playing the guitar and writing music. He really enjoys Christian rock. He plans to attend college in the fall to become a paramedic. Ray explained, “I have a passion to save lives spiritually and physically.” Ray also enjoys just about anything athletic, but his true delight is in baseball. He hopes to play while he attends college. And as a matter of fact, baseball is what God used to bring this group together. Ray and Adam met playing on a team together, and Ray began spending time with the Flores family. Ray explained that they invited him to church and he honestly admitted that it was Kelly’s beauty that led him to accept the invitation. We all laughed, as Kelly blushed, and he said, “If she goes to church, let’s go to church! It all worked out for the best and now I am serving the Lord.” After Ray dedicated his life to Jesus, he joined Focused and Ray, Kelly, and Adam began creating music for the Lord.

Living for Christ

Kelly and Adam were saved at a young age and have been involved in church their whole lives. However, it wasn’t until later in their childhood

that they understood what it truly meant to dedicate their lives to Christ. Kelly explained, “I was 12 and on a retreat [with church] at a prayer [meeting] and that’s when I took God seriously and actually understood for myself who God was.” Adam shared that when he was younger he didn’t really understand what a relationship with God was all about. When he was around 12, after they moved to Florida, he felt that it was time for a change and that he needed to increase his faith. He wanted to take God more seriously, so he asked to be baptized. Ray went to church as a child, but fell away in his early teens. A few years later, he was re-introduced to Christ by the Flores family and since then he has never looked back. Ray believes in living his life for God and showing the love of Christ in his actions. He revealed, “My ministry is my lifestyle.” Adam added, “When you live it, then that’s what really speaks to [others] more than just saying words, because they actually see it.” It is amazing to see how God is working in the lives of these youth. Their spiritual maturity is awesome to see at such a young age. What are Focused’s favorite scriptures? Kelly said, “Romans 8:28. I lean on that a lot; especially during hard situations because we know that all things work together for good for those who love God.” Then Ray opened up his Bible. You could tell how natural it was for him to be in the Word. He read Acts 20:24 (NIV): “However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace.” For Adam, it was Isaiah 41:10 (NIV), “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Adam explained that for him, this verse “talks about God’s love for His people and to lean on Him when you feel all else is lost, [because] He will guide you and give you knowledge of what to do.”

Ministry Through Song

When asked what they hope to accomplish through their music, Kelly responded, “Definitely encouraging people, edifying believers, and of course, getting the Gospel out there to nonbelievers and hoping that God does a work in them using us.” Ray added, “Showing [people] the truth, what it really is to live life. It’s not drugs and sex. Living life is living it for God.” And Adam candidly put it, “Mainly to preach and teach the Gospel. That’s all there really is.” Focused shared a vision that their music will be relevant to their listeners and

to the current issues people are facing. Ultimately, they want to connect people to Jesus Christ and reach out to those hurting to give them a message of hope and of God’s love for them. Focused has been performing together for the last four years at churches, festivals, fairs, MacDill Air Force Base, Battle of the Bands, Juvenile Detention Centers, and many more places. Basically, anywhere that will allow their voices to be heard for Jesus. Adam remarked, “We’re not doing it for money or to get people to like us;

we’re doing it to please the Lord.” The most important part of their music is the fact that it is all inspired by the Word of God and it is not watered down. Kelly, Adam, and Ray stay in the Word continually so that they are ready for whatever comes their way. They explained that they get asked some deep questions sometimes by the youth and they have to be equipped with scripture and led by the Spirit to answer. Their music ministers to the hearts of the young people and even at times the older generation. When Focused comes off stage, they are prepared to witness to the unsaved and be a light for Jesus Christ beyond the music. Focused is special in the way that they capture the attention of their listeners. Some of the most unlikely people, who would not typically listen to Christian music, will keep listening because the music has a good beat. Then, the lyrics start to minister

to them. They are real and relevant. They glorify God. Even nonbelievers can connect to the music and eventually the Word of God will penetrate their hearts.

The Music

Kelly’s new single “Season’s Change” is played on Spirit FM and it can also be found for download on iTunes, Rhapsody, and Amazon. Kelly has a demo album called Someone Like Me, and she is working on a solo project that will hopefully be completed by the end of the summer. Adam has a selftitled album, A-FLO, and his most recent album is titled, I’m FLOwin. Focused has a demo album, and they are currently working on their debut album. All of this music can be found at the Victorious Life Church bookstore, their performances and concerts, and through Holy Zone Records. Visit their website (www.HolyZoneRecords.com) to hear or download some of their music. You can also check out their MySpace page at (www.myspace.com/holyzonerecords). Stay tuned because these artists, who have

put their trust in God, have a bright future. This is just the beginning. We know there are other young people out there that have a heart for God and music, so we asked Focused to share some advice about stepping out in faith to do the will of God in their lives. Ray shared, “To write music, study your Word because the scripture is going to become your lyrics.” Kelly added, “If you feel that it is God’s will that you should be doing music, I would say get plugged in [at] church. Get involved and that will help you grow.” Overflow is encouraged by God’s hand on Focused and other youth in our community. We believe that the Holy Spirit is working mightily in Tampa Bay to bring more people to the saving grace of Jesus. Focused is one part of the Body of Christ that has obediently answered God’s call to rise up and reap the harvest of souls for His Kingdom. Glory!

Joy Submitted by: Jessica Aviles

A

s a single teacher, I used my extended vacations to do missionary work all over the world. One of my favorite places to go was to an orphanage in the Philippines called The Happy House. It was there that I learned the true meaning of joy. Up until that point, joy for me was always contingent upon circumstances, and I could always find something wrong in my life to “ruin” my joy. I could not wrap my brain around James 1:2-3 (NIV): “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.” In my mind, there was no way that any kind of joy was going to sneak in while I was going through trials. These trials were a time to press in, seek God, and ask Him to change my circumstances. However, I didn’t realize that I should be in joy, while trusting God to bring me through. Anyone who has been to a third world country can attest to the fact that, although poor, many of these

20

people have a sort of contagious joy that is not easily found in the United States. On my first trip to Ozamis, I received a lesson in joy that will stay with me for a lifetime. As my airplane landed on the tiny island of Ozamis, I saw small wiggly specks of color lining the runway. As we flew lower and lower, I noticed that the specks were cheering children with freshly made leis, welcoming us to their little part of the world. When the airplane door opened and we walked off into a world of poverty I had not yet seen, I was overwhelmed and humbled to the point of sobbing. Children that I had never met before surrounded me with hugs, flowers, and leis. I could not contain my emotion. I felt as if for the first time in my life, I had found true joy. My life lesson in joy did not end at the Ozamis airport. We drove through areas devastated by a volcanic eruption. Whole towns were completely covered in ash with its survivors left to fend for themselves, while trying to feed their families. We passed individuals with nothing more than a cardboard box or a shower curtain for a home. As we traveled and met people, I held

children so hungry that it was as if I was holding sacks of bones. I will never forget one precious child that I held who was dying from hunger and disease. Although she was four years old, she weighed no more than a newborn baby. I wasn’t sure how to hold her; she was so misshapen from lack of nutrition. She passed away within hours of our short encounter. As we were traveling through various parts of the island, I kept thinking, “Lord, how can I offer these people any hope? How can I offer them any joy? Look at how they’re living! I am only one person; I cannot help them all. I feel so insignificant and useless!” Back at the orphanage at the end of each day, I was surrounded with more love and joy than I had ever felt in my life. Some of these children had been found in trash cans as babies. Many had no shoes and ate one helping of rice all day, and yet they found the key to joy in spite of circumstance - worship. When the kids began to worship, it was with an intensity that is unmatched in much of the world. They woke up at 5:00 a.m. to worship the Lord, and they ended the night together in prayer. Their praises and prayers resonated down the street and could be heard from blocks away. The neighbors were used to it. The baker called them the “roosters,” as their praise was what woke up his patrons to come and get the day’s bread. The children’s joy was contagious. It was at the orphanage that I realized…it was not up to me to change their circumstances so that they could experience joy. They taught me how to have joy in spite of

circumstance. In my mind’s eye, I saw the children as blocks of wood, whittled into vessels by difficult circumstances and adversity. Those very vessels were filled to overflowing with joy, gratitude, and hope in God because they knew He loved them and rescued them. As I kept returning to The Happy House in the following years, I would learn that the joy that was engraved in each one of those children kept them going no matter what occurred: fires, flooding, typhoons, bombs, or even acts of terrorism. These disasters left devastation and death, and in spite of it all, the children would gather at 5:00 a.m. and worship and praise God for another day of His protection and provision. At the end of each day, they would gather to pray and lift their requests to God, knowing that He cared for them. Throughout the day, they would bubble over with joy and laughter, taking each moment that they were alive as a gift from God. I wanted so much to bottle that up and bring it back to the States with me. They received this joy and peace through thanksgiving and trusting in God, no matter the circumstances. Their hope, peace, and joy was completely in Christ, and brought to mind the verse, “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete” (John 15:11, NIV). These children taught me that we should be in joy, trusting God regardless of what is going on in our lives. Praise Jesus!

SALVATION

You’re not alone. In the Word of God (the Bible), God says He will never leave you nor forsake you. No matter what you’re experiencing in life now or even what you may have done in the past, God loves you and wants you to be His child so He can take care of you - forever. If you have an empty feeling that can’t be filled by anything that you’ve tried (alcohol, drugs, sex, food...) then please let me introduce you to the only thing that can fill that void, Jesus Christ. If you want to invite Jesus into your life then say this prayer out loud in faith: Father God, I come before you in the Name of Jesus. Your Word says, “Whosoever shall call on the Name of the Lord shall be saved” and “if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Acts 2:21; Romans 10:9). Father God, I believe your Word is truth and I stand on it now. Please forgive me for all my sins and unrighteousness. Today I make Jesus my Lord and Savior and I believe God raised Him from the dead, and He is seated at the right hand of the Father in Heaven. Father I ask that you fill me with your Holy Spirit to guide and teach me as I walk this earth and grow spiritually (Luke 11:13; Luke 12:12). I thank You for making a place for me in Your Kingdom, please guide me in the direction that will eternally please You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Clear Vision in Cloudy Times >>> BY JOHN FAULKNER

“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

L

ast month we talked about the characteristics of a faithbased business. Let’s drill down a little deeper this month and talk about purpose and vision. As Christian business owners we have a great opportunity on a daily basis to effectively change the lives of many people. When you consider that most small businesses come in contact with more people than local churches, you start to understand the impact of a great marketplace ministry. “[God] has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began” (2 Timothy 1:9, NKJV). The vision for our business will be revealed to us when we can link our talents, passions, experiences, and burdens with God’s purpose for our businesses. You can bet that purpose will be one that advances the Kingdom.

Ephesians 2:10 (NIV) Visions are “God ideas” and differ from “good ideas” in that we can accomplish good ideas with our own abilities and resources, while God ideas have an element of impossibility that will require God’s intervention. Think about all of the great stories in the Bible that have God’s miraculous intervention as a commonality. Another important thing to remember about a God given vision is that we should always put the “what” before the “how.” God will take care of the “how,” and He accomplishes great things through people that are willing to trust Him with the impossible. In tough economic times like today, we need to have a clear vision of what God has prepared for us to accomplish in the marketplace. Next month we will discuss casting the vision to others and how proper casting of the vision is necessary for building culture and passion within our businesses. BEHIND THE PULPIT LOCAL PASTOR’S VOICE

Reflections >>> BY PASTOR ERIC D. MEYER

I

always get a little reflective around my birthday. Combine that with running into an old friend from my USF Campus Ministry days, who this past January lost his wife (Jan) to cancer, and you will get a feel for what has been rumbling around inside of me for the last couple of weeks.

today. They are God’s gift to you. They are part of His treasure intended for your enjoyment. They are not “hassles” or “burdens” or your “cross to bear.” Love your people. Love them with all your heart and with all your effort. Lord, help us to love better.

The Preciousness of Time

I barely knew Jan but the news of her death really struck me. She was very close to my age. She was a devoted mother, wife, and ministry companion to her sweet husband. Life is brief, and even wonderful people die. This would be pretty depressing, except as believers our hope and delight and joyful vision is not to live to be 800 years old, hanging desperately on to this earthly life. True life is the life to come - the life we get to share forever in the presence of our Redeemer and King. This life to come is ours because of Jesus and His willingness to bear the weight and punishment we all so assuredly deserved. Lord, help me remember Your sacrifice for me, and to love You with all my heart.

I am 51 years old. My forties flew by faster than the previous three decades. My mentor has been talking to me lately about “finishing well,” and, of course, the implication is - the end of my years of pastoral fruitfulness are closer than the beginning years. Two of my children are outside of the home pursuing higher education and life beyond. I’ve begun to feel the weight of the psalmist’s words: “let me know how fleeting is my life” (Psalm 39:4, NIV). Time is precious. It is the commodity the Lord has given to us to redeem for His glory and His purposes. Lord, help me value the time You’ve given to me, and to honor You in my use of it.

The Preciousness of Our Relationships

It is so easy to take our wives, our kids, our extended family, and our church family for granted. It is so common to let grievances, both small and large, put vast canyons between us. I’ve been around a lot of funerals, and at those moments of final loss people rarely repeat their “I-told-you-so’s” or put-downs. Usually there is a sense in which we realize we could have been so much kinder, more patient, more forgiving, more loving, more…Christ-like. Look at your family

The Preciousness of the Savior

With that being said - let’s rejoice; let’s smile, laugh, and love. Let’s live our lives well. Let’s care for each other and love Jesus, our Lord and Savior. This is good advice, no matter what decade of life you are in! The Son is Shining >>> BY TOMMY BURRUS

A

couple of years ago, I boarded a plane with my family to travel across the country for vacation. The skies were dark and gray and the clouds were heavy with a coming rain. Within moments, the plane screamed into the air and rose above the storms. At that altitude, it was a completely different scene. The sun was shining and the sky was blue.

comes from an abiding relationship with Jesus Christ. In fact, the Greek word for joy is related to the Greek word for grace. They both come from the same root word which means “calmly happy.” Dr. Mike Seals, the Professor of Bible Languages at Emmaus Baptist College, explains, “There is a cause and effect relationship between grace and joy. Grace is an inward manifestation of God’s favor while joy is the outward presentation.”

When someone slanders and ridicules the child of God, it still is hurtful, but it does not have to disturb our joy. Instead, the believer can find shelter and refuge in Christ allowing them to experience healing and peace. Psalms 63:7 (RSV) says, “For Thou hast been my help, and in the shadow of Thy wings I sing for joy.” Difficulties present us with opportunities to experience the power of God’s grace in an attitude of joy.

In that moment, I realized a deep truth: even as we face the storms of life, the sun is shining! Our circumstances may keep us from seeing the blue skies or the radiance of the sun, but they are still there. The storm is temporarily obstructing the view of the sun, but no storm can quench the sun. We will feel its comforting warmth and experience its light again.

Experiencing God’s grace and walking with Christ produces a peace that makes the believer joyful even when external circumstances don’t seem to warrant joy. That is a mouthful, so consider it practically. Due to the influence of Jesus in a believer’s life, he or she can avoid an emotional meltdown when faced with a flat tire on the way to an important meeting. Does that mean that the situation is not frustrating? No. What it means is that Jesus helps us be joyful even in such situations.

Jesus has provided a joy that no man can take from us (John 16:22). When we read Romans 8:28-39, the Bible tells us that there is nothing that can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. Even in the tempest of tribulation, God’s children can rest in the knowledge that God is using our challenges to make us better. In all these things we are “more than conquerors” (Romans 8:37). Our standing in Christ Jesus allows us to be joyful as the Bible says in James 1:2-4 (NIV): “Consider it

Many people confuse joy with an emotion. Joy is actually a state of confidence that

28

but I can still be joyful because of my eternal perspective. I am God’s child, and He loves me. His grace and peace have not and will not abandon me, and the laundry will get done. We can remain in a constant state of joy (1 Thessalonians 5:16 & Philippians 4:4). Our emotions take their cue from the level of our confidence in God, but they are also dependent upon external circumstances and a host of other things. Emotions fluctuate and are not consistent because of the other influences. For example, I can be happy even if I am tired because I am surrounded by my family or because I am satisfied by an accomplishment. However, sometimes I am grumpy because I am tired or hungry.

We are able to experience the grace of God joyfully when we are in harmony with God. Jesus said in John 15:10-11 (NAS), “If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments, and abide in His love. These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy

“But let all who take refuge in You be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread Your protection over them, that those who love Your name may rejoice in You.” (Psalm 5:11, NIV)

pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” I have known and counseled believers who felt like something was wrong with them because they were not able to be constantly happy. Some of them pretend to be happy even when they are not because of a misguided perception of what Christians are supposed to do. In keeping with the analogy of the storm, it is akin to refusing to use an umbrella or denying that they are getting wet because the sun is shining above the storm. Christianity is not an escape from reality, but it is rather a more comprehensive understanding of reality. The laundry may be piled up and the phone may be ringing,

Emotions themselves are not our goal, and it may surprise you to learn that joy isn’t our focus either. Instead, we are to focus on our relationship with Jesus Christ. The result of an abiding walk with Christ is joy, and that joy will produce positive emotions. Focusing on the joy or emotional happiness will only lead to disappointment because we are not the source of joy, but the recipients of it. God created us with a wide range of emotions. We can be happy, sad, angry, hopeful, relieved, or surprised, to name but a few. Joy gives us the ability to control those emotions and to moderate them. Joyful believers are not controlled by their emotions, but rather exercise self-control over their emotions. There are things that we can do to hinder our joy. Selfishness and sin are joy robbers. David learned this after his life spiraled into sin. Later, in Psalm 51:12-13 (TLB), David wrote, “Restore to me again the joy of Your salvation, and make me willing to obey You. Then I will teach Your ways to other sinners, and they - guilty like me - will repent and return to You.” Disobedience to God steals our joy, but obedience sustains and protects that joy.

may be made full.” Remaining in a faithful walk with God allows us to experience the fullness of His joy. The challenges of our lives are like surface storms. They darken the landscape for a time, but beyond those clouds, the sun is shining just as brightly as it ever did. Beneath the surface of even the greatest ocean tempest, the sea is calm. As believers, we need to remember that God’s Son is still shining. He is always working on our behalf even when we are struggling and in turmoil. The world is often puzzled by the ability of God’s people to remain steadfast and joyful in the face of difficult circumstances, but the secret is in the assurance that God is for us, and, therefore, no one else can be a threat to us. Glory!

HEALTHY LIFE

Are You Getting Enough Sleep?

T

here are many studies that show the importance of sleeping between 6 to 10 hours per night, which is an average of 8 hours. Sounds great, but as most of us can agree that isn’t always easy to do. Now that we’re in the technology age, our lives are supposed to become easier. However, it’s not so easy when we begin doing the work of three or four people since we have these great tools that allow us to do more. Then, add a few kids into the equation and our schedules become even more exhausting. What’s so important about getting the proper amount of sleep? Let me share some side effects of being sleep deprived and then some possible solutions to restless nights. Rather than bombarding you with all kinds of clinical data, I’ll keep it simple. Studies have shown that when we do not get enough rest, our bodies release improper amounts of certain hormones. When we don’t have the correct levels of hormones we can become short-tempered and moody. This is not fun for anyone and makes for a very long day.

30

OverflowMag.com   June 2010

In addition to being moody, lack of sleep can also slow down the body’s metabolism resulting in unwanted weight increase. Not allowing the body to rest through proper amounts of sleep also puts stress on the most important muscle in the body, the heart. If you’re active and not resting, then your heart is active and not resting; it’s that simple. There are more negative effects on memory and overall health, but a side effect we tend not to think about is our safety and our families’ safety. When we are not properly rested but think we are, we can overlook warning signs that we would normally catch any other time -- resulting in possible accidents. So, how can we increase our sleep time with our busy schedules? A good start would be to write down a schedule and find ways to modify it so you can get 8 hours of sleep a night. If you’re like most, then there are nights when you start thinking about all the things you have to do tomorrow. If you’re not careful, before you know it, you’ll be getting out of bed to make notes or check

some of those things off your “to do” list. Don’t do it! Try making a list of the next day’s tasks as one of the last things you do before bed. Then, give all those cares to Lord. “Cast your burden on the Lord, And He shall sustain you…” (Psalm 55:22, NKJV). It’s true. Throughout the day, begin mediating on scripture that pertains to your particular situation. In other words, focus on a certain scripture and say it multiple times throughout the day. For example, begin saying Psalm 138:8 each time you wash your hands and before you know it that scripture will be in your heart and you will no longer worry about your days or lose sleep at night (Matthew 6:25). Before you go to sleep, open your Bible and read some scriptures that pertain to God’s promises of sleep and rest for His children. “I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety” (Psalm 4:8, NIV). Then, pray for good sleep each night. It works, praise God! Get some rest!

REVERENCE and LOVE H

>>>BY CHRIS CHERP

e teaches us the importance of not lying. He teaches us to forgive and move on. He teaches us by example. Who is he? A good father and we call him father out of reverence. He teaches us how to fish. He teaches us how to swim. He teaches us how to play catch. Who is he? A good daddy and we call him daddy out of love.

Looking back from a father’s point of view I realize that my father always loved me. Now that I’m a father and have to make hard decisions myself, I understand how it really does hurt more to be the disciplinarian than the recipient of the discipline. Due to the profound respect I have for my father, I now strive to follow the example my father set for me growing up.

Reverenced Father

Loving is defined as the showing of affection. It was through love that my daddy took time to teach me how to hold a fishing pole and about the different kinds of bait. It was out of love that my daddy would continue to step backwards in the pool as I splashed frantically trying to make it to him. He knew that I was able to swim the full length of the pool on my own! It was out of love that my daddy took time to teach me how to play catch even though I wanted to close my eyes every time the ball came to me. He never gave up on me because he loves me.

Reverence is defined as a feeling of profound respect for someone. Growing up I reverenced my father because in my eyes he was so big and powerful. I never worried about anything when my father was near because he would protect me and my family from all that was bad. I reverenced my father because he always stood for what was right and true even if I didn’t understand why. It wasn’t until I became a father that I realized the hard decisions that all good fathers make throughout parenthood. Never did I believe that it hurt him more than me when he spanked me for lying. Never once did I believe that it was for my own good to be grounded for biting my sister in retaliation when she made fun of me.

Loving Daddy

It wasn’t until I became a daddy that I realized the sacrifices that all good daddies make throughout parenthood. Never did I hear my daddy complain about being tired after putting in a twelve hour day at work when I wanted him to teach me how to fish

or play catch. Never did I hear my daddy mention his embarrassment when I was crying in the pool because I didn’t want him to let me go. Looking back from a daddy’s point of view I realize that my daddy always loved me. Now that I’m a daddy I understand the importance of making sacrifices in order to spend quality time with my children. Due to the profound respect I have for my daddy, I now strive to follow the example my daddy set for me growing up.

Our Good Father

Before I was in a true relationship with God through Jesus Christ, I often wondered where my father got all his wisdom. I remember seeing him read the Bible in the mornings, but I never really knew the impact the Word of God could have on one’s life, as well as on the lives of those around you. I’m grateful my father spent time in the Word because his example helped change my life. Looking back I see it was our reverent Father God who was teaching me not to lie (Colossians 3:9). It was He who was teaching me through a godly father to forgive others (Matthew 6:14 & Mark 11:25). It was He who taught me through the example of Jesus (John 13:15). Looking back I see it was our loving Daddy who sits on the throne that was teaching me how to live life more abundantly (John 10:10). It was He who was teaching me through a godly daddy to love because God is love (1 John 4:8). It was He who was showing me His everlasting love (Romans 8:38-39).

This Father’s Day let’s give thanks for all those godly fathers that are continually learning from the perfect Father in Heaven. Give thanks for the good fathers that have earned reverence through making hard decisions and enforcing them even when it hurt the father more than the child. This Father’s Day let’s rejoice for all godly daddies that turn to God when they need strength and guidance. Rejoice for the good daddies that have made sacrifices to show their never-ending love for all their children (John 3:16). Through faith, we come to understand that God is our Father and Daddy (Romans 8:15). This understanding gives security to earthly fathers because God is going before us and preparing our ways (Ephesians 2:10). So what can we give to our fathers this Father’s Day? Let’s start by giving them the respect they deserve. Let’s show them appreciation for all the things they have done for us, even the things we don’t know

about. Let’s give them thanks by selflessly showing them our affection and respect throughout the entire year.

Give Thanks

For a long time I wondered, “What can I give to my Father/Daddy in Heaven, the creator of Heaven and earth?” I learned that I can give Him thanks, praise, and all the glory! Think about it; we go to Him for all our needs, wants, and desires but how often do we really thank Him for everything we have. Make a point to start thanking our good Father in Heaven every day and watch how that qualifies you to receive even more. Glory!

MAGNIFY HIM SUBMITTED BY YOU!

Freedom From the Pursuit of Perfection Submitted by: Cary Sanchez Tampa, FL

For much of my life I did not understand why I was created the way that I was. I really struggled with low self-esteem. On the outside I appeared I “had it all together,” but it was just a facade. I never felt my opinion mattered or that my voice was important. I have always been a little heavy set. As a child, there was always pressure on me to lose weight. A day would not go by that someone in my family would make a fat joke. As a result, I was very self-conscious about my weight. I started dieting at the age of 9 but with very little success. At the age of 13, I really put it into high gear and lost a considerable amount of weight. This was reinforced by all of the positive messages I received, “You look great, you are getting so skinny.” These comments were fuel to my growing pursuit of perfection. This continued, and by the age of 14 I was, by definition, an anorexic. I was never formally diagnosed but I displayed all of the classic symptoms. I lost a considerable amount of weight and my obsession with caloric intake and exercise were at an all time high. By this time, school officials were becoming increasingly concerned for my health as they saw me continuing to lose weight. My parents were also urging me to eat. This was when the binging and purging began. A friend of my sister was a bulimic and she taught me how to “eat without consequences.” This was the beginning of my 13 year battle with bulimia. My parents were not Christians, but by the grace of God, they put me into a Christian school. I understood from a young age my need for a Savior, and at the age of 6, I accepted Jesus as my Savior. I have always loved the Lord, though I did not always serve Him the way I should have. I always knew intellectually that He loved me and that He created me. I knew that my secret sin of binging and purging was hurting not only my physical body, but also the heart of God. Despite of all this, I could not stop. I tried so many times to stop this behavior, but the reality is, it is more than a behavior, it is an addiction.

It was not until I had a true encounter with the Lord that I was set free from this addiction. When I finally saw myself through God’s eyes I was able to stop this destructive addiction from secretly controlling my life. I thought that I had hurt my body so badly that I would never be able to have children. The Lord truly healed me from the inside out. Today I have 3 year-old twin daughters. I no longer let the number on the scale define me. The one who defines me is my Creator. His Word says that I am the apple of His eye, and that He stitched me together in my mother’s womb and knows me from the inside out (Psalm 139:13). I am valuable to God! He loves me with an everlasting love. His love for me does not change, despite my imperfections. He loves me wholly and unconditionally. His thoughts for me outnumber the sand on the shore: “How precious are your thoughts about me, O God! They are innumerable! I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up in the morning, you are still with me!” (Psalm 139:17-18, NLT) It is important to know that God will never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). When I understood the love of Christ for me, I was finally able to love myself and value myself. His amazing love and the power of the Holy Spirit broke all the chains of addiction, low selfesteem, and feelings of low self-worth in my life. Today I hold my head up high knowing that I am a daughter of the Most High God. Today I am able to serve the Lord without reservation and to sing songs of praise without the guilt of hypocrisy. I am a new creation! All the glory to our Lord Jesus Christ!

RESOURCES FOR YOUR SPIRIT

Ephesians 4:23 (NLT) “Instead, there must be a spiritual renewal of your thoughts and attitudes.”

It is vital to our spirituality that we continually renew our minds with the Word of God and meditate on His Word. Our Bibles are the most important resource we have to accomplish spiritual growth; however, we do believe in the importance of feeding our spirits with edifying books, sermons, and music that will build us up and keep Jesus Christ at the forefronts of our daily lives. Each month we will share impactful books, CDs (old and new), and even websites that are inspirational and foster stronger relationships with our Father.

The Bait of Satan

Living Free from the Deadly Trap of Offense

John Bevere

“Have you ever been trapped? This book exposes one of Satan’s most deceptive snares used to pull believers out of God’s will. It is the trap of offense. Jesus said, ‘It is impossible that offenses will not come’ (Luke 17:1). The question is not, ‘Will you encounter the bait of Satan?’ Rather, ‘How will you respond?’ Don’t let another’s sin or mistake affect your relationship with God!”

www.MessengerInternational.org

The Believer’s Authority Kenneth E. Hagin

“Do we have authority that we don’t know about - that we haven’t discovered - that we’re not using?” This book “provides excellent insight into the God-given authority that rightfully belongs to every believer in Christ. In this book you will discover: the prayers of Paul; what authority is; how to break the power of the devil; the weapons of our warfare; and how to exercise authority.”

The Blind Side

Alcon Entertainment/Warner Bros. Pictures Rated PG-13 - 129 minutes This movie is based on the true story of Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy who take in a homeless teenager, Michael Oher, from a broken home. The Tuohy family gave Michael a “temporary” place to stay and helped him with his education and even encouraged him in football. Soon the whole family fell in love with Michael and asked him to be a permanent part of their family. Michael worked hard at school and in practice. With the help of his coaches and adopted family, he became an All-American offensive left tackle with a NCAA Division I athletic scholarship. Michael Oher was the first-round pick of the Baltimore Ravens in the 2009 NFL draft.

MY ROCK

SCRIPTURES I STAND ON

Proverbs 22:6 (NKJV) “Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it. This verse is a truth that I stand on. My roots were planted as a child and I want to do the same for my children. I want to give them a foundation in the faith and love of Jesus and also teach them the concepts of forgiveness and acceptance.

Deuteronomy 8:15-18 (NIV) “He led you through the vast and dreadful desert, that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock. He gave you manna to eat in the desert, something your fathers had never known, to humble and to test you so that in the end it might go well with you. You may say to yourself, ‘My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.’ But remember the Lord your God, for it is HE who gives you the ability to produce wealth....” This scripture gave me hope as I was going through my hardest times of struggle.

MY ROCK

SCRIPTURES I STAND ON

Psalm 118:24 (NIV) “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Every morning I thank God for the new, unblemished day He has given me. I cherish each day as a fresh chance to do better, be better, and serve better...knowing that He has already forgiven me for any mistakes of the previous day and He’s saying, ‘See what you can do in My Name this new day.’

Luke 1:46-49 (KJV) “And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is His Name.” When I think of Mary saying these words I am overwhelmed with love, humility, and obedience. As a young girl she was called by our Father God to become the mother of Jesus Christ. In her youth and innocence, she demonstrated fearless and perfect obedience to God. Mary’s true love and devotion to God and her complete trust in His ways stands out as a clear example and model of His faithful servant – something we are all called to be.
