Counseling Beliefs

Renewal Through Relationship

Tampa Bay Christian Counseling Center is a Christian counseling practice offering comprehensive services to the Tampa Bay area. Working with clients of all ages, our counselors help guide individuals and couples to relational wholeness in Christ.

At Tampa Bay Christian Counseling Center, our counselors create an environment where people can be themselves, knowing that the counseling process is built on trust, hope, care and most importantly Jesus Christ. We walk alongside our clients in their spiritual journeys, going beyond outward symptoms to the inward cause and inviting genuine change in Christ.

We believe that the best counseling isn’t based on a number of steps or easy answers. It is a process that helps people identify where they have built a life apart from God and that calls them to an authentic relationship with Him.

Tampa Bay Christian Counseling Center believes there is a profound difference in content and results between counseling based in God’s Word and secular counseling approaches. We offer real, Biblically based counseling that presents solutions to people’s problems in contrast to symptom focused psychotherapy which ultimately does not look to God’s Word for solutions.

It is a relationship where we enter deeply into the lives of those in pain and crisis to bring them to a place where they can love God, love others and love themselves. We believe lasting change and personal wholeness have their genesis within a relationship with Christ.

We believe every child is a story to be read and not written. Every child is born with a unique gift and identity, designed and given by God for a specific destiny. A child’s natural talents and tendencies are a result of this gift. When this gift is honored and their identity nurtured, children and adults fulfill their destiny by displaying that facet of the glory of God that was intended. Children are created with a specific assignment that will change the world around them. Identity without knowledge and wisdom leaves a child without ability, and academics without identity leaves a child without direction. When we embrace academic excellence and engage their identity, we will develop life long learners who are preeminent in their field.

Dear Friends, The fourth of July is drawing near and we are reminded of the great freedom that we are blessed with here in the United States. This freedom has been bought and paid for through the sacrifices of many. Overflow would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who serves or has served in the United States military. Thank you for helping America continue to be the Land of the Free. We want to celebrate freedom this month not only for our country, but also for all believers who have made Jesus their Lord and Savior. Those whom the Son sets free are free indeed (John 8:36)! I encourage you to read “Breaking the Cycle: Restoring Liberty in the Land of the Free” by Tommy Burrus (page 30). This article is a good reminder that God is the only answer to restoring our nation. God was able to deliver the Israelites, and our God is still able to deliver us. This is a call for God’s people to come back to Him. The cover this month spotlights a wonderful couple who has stepped out in faith to answer the call of God on their lives. They are the founders and directors of Run For Freedom, a ministry that raises awareness of human trafficking and provides a safe home for rescued victims called the Dream Home. This home is a refuge for these women to heal, receive education, and experience God’s love. Go to page 14 to read this

MAGNIFY HIM SUBMITTED BY YOU!

Matthew 13:9 (NKJV)

“He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”

The Signs That Follow One day I was working out in the gym, following a routine that I have done many times, when something I never experienced happened. I was working my triceps doing “lying triceps extensions.” I was using a moderate level of weight and my body was already warmed up. During my second set, I heard a loud rip in my left arm. At first there was no pain, but then all of a sudden my left arm (from shoulder to elbow) began to burn from the inside out. I immediately stopped what I was doing and went to the locker room to take a closer look. By the time I reached the locker room, it appeared that I had a large lump hanging over my elbow. Then, the burning sensation began to leave and was quickly replaced with a deep, dull pain that radiated from the base of my skull to the tips of fingers on my left hand. As I left the gym I called my wife and told her that I injured myself in the gym and would need her help getting to the emergency room. After the doctor examined me, he set up an appointment for me to visit a specialist the next morning. I went to the specialist and a surgery was scheduled for the next day to reattach my left triceps. The night before the surgery my wife opened the Bible to Mark 16:17-18 where it says these signs will follow those who believe...they shall lay hands on the sick and they will recover. She laid hands on me and prayed. The next morning I had the surgery. When I awoke from the anesthesia the doctor approached me and my wife with a baffled look on his face. He told us that he and several highly qualified doctors had reviewed my MRI films, and all agreed that my left triceps was ripped from the bone. The doctor further explained that when he opened me up there was nothing for him to repair, everything was intact. He said, “I can’t believe it, you’re fine.” Glory to God! I am not only healed, but stronger today than I was before the incident occurred. God is in the healing business; thank you Jesus! >>> DD, Wesley Chapel

A Parent’s Praise “For He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways” (Psalm 91:11, KJV). Each day, I pray for my children and ask God to protect them and keep them safe. He certainly answered that prayer recently when my wife and I had a major miscommunication. We each thought that the other was going to be home to meet our youngest daughter when she got off the bus, but actually no one was home to meet her. I was out of town and my phone had been dead for several hours. My wife was at work with her phone on silent. My daughter went to two trusted neighbors’ homes but neither came to the door. It started to thunder and she became frightened. She went to a Verizon man who was working in the neighborhood and asked to use his phone. She reached a lady from church who came to pick her up right away. Thank God that the man helped her! We were panicked until we knew where she was and that she was safe. Now we are thanking God for His protection. >>>T.B., Plant City

Purify “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me” (Galatians 2:20, NKJV). God has changed the way I look at just about everything in my life. This scripture speaks to me because ever since I gave my life over to Jesus Christ, I have felt like a whole new person. I don’t say things I used to say; I don’t watch things I used to watch; I don’t listen to things I used to listen to; and I don’t do things that I know will grieve my spirit. Of course, I miss it sometimes, but God is always just to forgive. He has given me the ability to live by faith and steer clear of the things in this world that are impure. Some would say it’s easy to let go of things like TV shows and music that are contrary to the Word of God, but I struggled with my flesh. I finally realized that certain things were hindering my growth and walk with the Lord and I made the decision to leave those things behind, strive for purity, and follow Christ. Since I made this choice, my life has improved and I now have a closer relationship with God. >>> Amanda, Plant City

“Sunrise Takes the Darkness” Submitted by: Hope McClure

Wait on the Lord Recently the Lord laid it on my heart to go through the Bible and highlight all the verses pertaining to waiting on the Lord. He was giving me the message that when we wait and rest in the Lord, He then goes to work on our behalf. Shortly after reviewing all the scriptures that I had highlighted, I received a phone call with some disturbing news regarding a business I own. My first impulse was to get on the phone and start making important decisions and barking orders, but that is not what I did. My first call was to my wife. We prayed in agreement that all would work out fine. The second call was to the party responsible for the disturbing news. No one answered so I left a message asking them to call me back. Then I laid across my bed and meditated on God’s Word. I actually waited on the Lord. About thirty minutes later, I received a phone call and everything was resolved within a five minute conversation. God’s Word never returns void. Praise the Lord! >>> P.C. Tampa

Healed of Skin Cancer I have lived in the area for 10 years now. A few years ago, I had a dark suspicious lesion that was the size of a pin head on my skin. My husband is a doctor and told me that it looked like melanoma and to get to the doctor as soon as possible to have it checked. Of course, I blew it off but within about a month it had grown to the size of my fingernail and now we both were in a panic. When we were in school, we both had taken skin pathology classes, and I knew it was a melanoma. My husband was really freaking out. At the time, I had been listening to a lot of healing testimonies, so my faith was strong in healing. I told my husband that the Lord was going to heal me of this cancer. He told me to get to the doctor to have it removed. Well, I went to the doctor the next day to have it biopsied. When I told the doctor to biopsy the area, she said that there was nothing there to biopsy! I was healed. I went back to work on a spiritual high and my husband was at church with me that night, on a Friday! We give GOD all the glory, and it was so much fun to watch the Lord do His mighty work. >>>Jennifer R., Countryside Christian Center

Human Trafficking in America This content is presented to raise awareness of human trafficking. It is of a sensitive nature and geared toward our adult readers.

>>> BY TAMMY LA VIGNE

F

or most Americans human trafficking is thought of as a problem that happens in countries such as Cambodia, Thailand, Mexico, and other foreign countries. Very few are aware that trafficking happens right here on American soil to American people. Experts rank the United States as the number one destination for humans being trafficked. All 50 states report cases of human trafficking; Florida is ranked number three of all states reporting human trafficking, with California being number one and New York at number two. Human Trafficking is the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring, or receipt of persons by means of threat or force or other forms of coercion, deception, or the abuse of power against a person of vulnerability for the purpose of exploitation. Exploitation includes prostitution, other forms of sexual exploitation, and forced labor comparable to slavery. America’s young girls and boys are taken or coerced into captivity for sex and/or forced labor for the purpose of making money and they are treated as commodities. Human trafficking is infesting America in the worst way. Children as young as five have become victims. According to the U.S. Department of State, there are an estimated 800,000 – 1,200,000

children, women, and men trafficked across international borders each year. Of this number, an estimated 17,500 are trafficked into the United States from outside countries. This year at the Super Bowl, it was estimated that there were 60,000 girls trafficked in Miami. More than 60% of all women and girls trafficked in America are American girls. According to the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime, human trafficking is the world’s most organized and lucrative crime next to drug dealing. Many drugs dealers are now adding human trafficking to their racket as well. What is the reason for this? They can only sell drugs or a weapon once, but they can sell a girl or boy fifteen to forty times per night. Ninety percent of American runaways will become captives of the commercial sex trade within 48 hours of leaving home. Traffickers

are better known in the United States as “pimps.” A pimp will find a girl and lure her in with false hope of a “good life” offering her material things and wooing her into a false relationship. I’ve been asked often, “Why would one stay and not try to escape or tell someone?” As Americans living in a free country, it’s hard for us to understand why someone living in such atrocity would never try to escape. Let me try to help you understand. However, keep in mind that the following story is just one of the many scenarios that perpetrators use to seek out their potential victims. Envision a 13 or 14 year old girl. She has run away from home because of abuse or even something as simple as she had a bad argument with a parent. The young teen is out late walking the streets alone. A pimp driving by spots the teen girl and approaches her. He will come across as a sweet guy, pretending to care about her well being. The girl, who may be missing love and/or attention at home, is eager to share her sorrow with someone who will listen. The pimp will make empty promises to care for and protect the girl. After a few days, weeks, or months the pimp will gain her trust and even lead her to believe that they are a couple. After the trafficker is confident that she has fallen for his lies and trusts him, he will tell her that the only way she can have what he promised is for her to sell herself for money. He will begin what is referred to as the “seasoning period.” At any time if she does not cooperate she will be beaten and raped, and her life or her family’s lives will be threatened. She will be demoralized and all of the secrets she initially shared with the pimp will be used against her. The pimp will remind her that she left home and now is nothing more than a runaway. He will tell her that she is not welcome at home because her family will not want her back. The perpetrator will do this until she submits. Luring a victim on the street is not the only way a trafficker will recruit. They will use social networking websites to draw in teens and adults with false relationships. Traffickers will also abduct victims that they cannot lure; these are often the children victims. For these victims their “seasoning period” is started immediately upon

abduction. The victim is typically beaten and raped to instill fear and strip them of any dignity. There are many ways traffickers keep these victims in bondage: mental abuse, drug addiction, and false debt, to name just a few. In some cases, the victims have been tattooed or branded to show that they are property of the trafficker or gang that “owns” them. Victims are rarely kept in one location. They are moved around often from city to city for several reasons. One reason is to keep the victims from forming relationships with each other or customers. Some other reasons are to keep the victims from recognizing or becoming comfortable in their location and to ensure that the customers can experience different sex slaves.

1891. How has this despicable crime lasted so many years? As Mary Ann Manzo of Run For Freedom candidly put it, “Proper people do not talk about these types of things,” and she furthered explained that this silence is what has allowed sex slavery to continue into the present day. I read a quote recently: “Anything permitted increases.” Let’s not allow this crime to increase because we are not educated on human trafficking or because it’s too harsh of a topic to discuss. Traffickers are educated; they know exactly what to say and what to do to gain the trust of vulnerable people, including children. I encourage you to speak to your family and friends about human trafficking and raise awareness of this tragedy that is happening in our own country. Help put a stop to human trafficking.

All this is happening right here in the land of the free. Why don’t we see it? Many If you suspect that someone has been mistakenly assume that these victims trafficked, please call the national hotline are prostitutes voluntarily, but this is not at 1-888-373-7888. For more information always the case. These victims of sex contact Tammy La Vigne at: slavery are not just on the corners in bad Tammy2010@USA.com or visit neighborhoods, massage parlors, and www.runforfreedom.net. strip clubs. Traffickers are using suburban homes as brothels and often take the victims to “house calls.” On • Not free to leave, or come and go the other hand, not all • Under 18, providing commercial sex acts prostitutes are trafficked. • Recruited through false promises concerning Sadly, there are some the nature and conditions of his/her work who choose to sell • Fearful, anxious, depressed, submissive, themselves. MINISTRY SPOTLIGHT

Running By Faith >>> BY AMANDA WRIGHT

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for He has appointed me to preach Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the downtrodden will be freed from their oppressors.” (Luke 4:18, NLT)

asco (“Pat”) and Mary Ann Manzo are no strangers to living by faith on a daily basis. They were called to start a church in Rhode Island which they led for twenty-five years before God directed them into a different kind of ministry. The couple started Dream Again Ministries using speaking engagements and seminars to help and encourage hurting people, married couples, and church leaders to dream again. Mary Ann shared, “We’ve always had hearts for people that were broken and hurting, and for people that nobody else wanted.” They moved to central Florida over three years ago looking forward to the new opportunities ahead. They had no idea what God had in store for them and the heavy burden He would place on their hearts. Not long after moving to Florida, Pat was offered a position at a friend’s church. “It wasn’t in the plan,” Mary Ann commented, but Pat prayed and felt led to make a one

year commitment as an Associate Pastor. The year went well and he recommitted for a second year. During this time Mary Ann found herself working in the real estate field and reflected back on how strange it seemed for them to be in 9-5 type positions. They had been working in ministry for so many years and leading a church was a 24/7 job. Dream Again ministry commitments slowed down due to Pat’s position at the church. Mary Ann and Pat felt that God was calling them to do something more, but He had not yet revealed His plan to them.

Bring Awareness One evening Pat was watching the movie Human Trafficking and felt led to take some notes even though he had seen it before. He revealed, “During the movie I was getting choked up at different points, and it was really bothering me. By the end of the movie I was just weeping.” Then the Lord told Pat in his spirit, “I want you to do something about this.” Pat responded, “All right; what

do you want me to do?” The Lord answered, “I want you to bring awareness in America.” Human trafficking “is defined by the United Nations as the recruiting, transporting, harboring, receiving and selling of victims for the purpose of prostitution, slavery, pornography, or sexual exploitation. It takes place through threat, coercion, fraud, abduction, deception, and abuse of power. There are 49 countries that presently traffic into 91 cities in America with the average victim’s age being just thirteen years old” (www.runforfeeedom.

net). There are an estimated 20 million victims to date worldwide. (To find out more please read “Human Trafficking in America” on page 10.)

had no idea that this atrocity was taking place on American soil.

for religious freedom. Pat said, “We adopted that whole idea – orange for freedom.”

The Color of Freedom

Pat obediently produced a CD and later a two-minute DVD to present whenever he spoke on human trafficking. He shared his growing burden with his church staff and any time he had a speaking opportunity for Dream Again Ministries. Most people responded with surprise because they believed human trafficking was limited to Thailand, the Philippines, and India. Many

As a runner Pat began to wear orange bandanas during races to promote the freedom of sex slaves in America. Why orange? Pat responded with two reasons: first, He had learned of the organization Not For Sale which also promotes orange for the freedom of sex slaves; second, the connection with orange goes back to the Orange Order of Ireland that campaigned

Pat raised money for the cause and wanted to give the funds to an overseas ministry that had a home for rescued victims of human trafficking. He was in the process of building his website and wanted to partner with this ministry, which was already taking action to help the survivors of this modern-day slavery. Pat was hoping to link their websites and stand together to raise awareness. However, God had a different plan. This ministry declined Pat’s donation which confused him. Pat asked

The Starting Line With God’s leading, Pat resigned from his position at the church. On July 1, 2009, this brave couple stepped out in faith and walked away from the paycheck to start their new ministry, Run For Freedom. Pat and Mary Ann chose this name because it was on their hearts to do 5K races all over America to raise awareness about human trafficking. So literally, they are running to raise awareness - running for the freedom of victims and potential victims. Pat explained that awareness is the only thing that will bring an end to human trafficking, so this is a large focus of their ministry. Pat also shared the second reason they chose this name, “So the girls can run for their freedom.” A victim needs to know where she

View from the Dream Home

is going. Throughout the world there are not many places that a victim of human trafficking can run to if she is fortunate enough to get away or be rescued. Due to the lack of safe havens available for these victims, many of them do not try to get away. Pat explained that if a girl is going to run she knows she is taking the risk of being recaptured, beaten, or murdered. They are also often threatened with harm to their family. Pat added, “If she’s a foreigner, she’s been told that she’s an immigrant. She’s been told that she doesn’t have papers. She’s been told she will be arrested, that she’ll be put in jail, [then] deported and they’ll get her again. So why is she going to run?” Now, these women can run for their freedom because there is a place for them to go. “There is a place you can run to live. There is a place where people will love you, sustain you, and make you whole again. That’s worth running for,” Pat stated. Run For Freedom calls this place The Dream Home.

The Dream Home The name for the Dream Home came from their parent ministry, Dream Again Ministries. Pat pointed out, “When Run For Freedom came under us, it was a perfect fit because we wanted these girls to be able to dream again.” They also wanted the residence to feel more like a home than an institution. God provided property in central Florida for less than 40% of the market value. With generous donations and interest-free bridge loans, Pat and Mary Ann were able to secure the funds to purchase the property. Pat’s thirty plus years of experience working with Teen Challenge USA in Rhode Island prepared him for what is involved in running a long-term residential facility for these rescued victims.

the Lord what to do because he didn’t know of any other ministries doing this kind of work. Then the Lord said to him very clearly, “I didn’t tell you to raise money and give it to somebody else. I told you to do something about this.”

This beautiful home sitting on several acres is surrounded by lush vegetation. The view of the water combined with the sweet smell of jasmine

is breathtaking. As the rescued women walk the property and take in the views, an overwhelming sense of peace will come over them. The Lord’s presence is very apparent in this amazing property. He is calling out, “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28, NIV). The Dream Home is a refuge where countless women will heal through Jesus Christ.

Recovery Pat and Mary Ann understand that the healing process for these women is a long road, but they are confident that the intervention of Jesus through the Dream Home will allow them to achieve that healing. The victims that will reside at the home have been abused mentally, physically, and emotionally. With all of this in mind, Run For Freedom has developed a one-year program for the women that will help heal the scars left on their spirits from the bondage of enslavement. The home has the capacity to sleep fourteen people plus three additional emergency beds. There will be a house mother and two other live-in women staff members. The caretakers will live in a mobile home on another section of the property. No men will actually live in the Dream Home. The program will consist of daily devotions and classes to learn life skills (domestic and clerical) and how to deal with fear, anger, and hatred. The garage has been converted into the learning center/chapel. In addition to one-on-one counseling, tutoring will be provided for those who want to obtain their GED or learn English as a second language. The women will eat their meals together and have recreational time in the afternoons. They can spend time with God by the water, in the gazebo, at the picnic tables, or in the rocking chairs on the porch. The idea is that everywhere they go on this property there is a peaceful environment for them to recover and rebuild their lives, one day at a time. The Freedom Barn on the property is equipped to house three horses that the ministry will use as a part of their therapy. “We have a local gal that will work with the girls and the horses once a week. The girls will learn to bond with the horses as well as overcome fear and intimidation,”

Pat shared. The women will also have individual responsibilities in the home and in the vegetable garden. The ministry has partnered with several churches in the area and on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings all of the women will attend church services. On Sunday evenings in the learning center/chapel, they will have a service with guest speakers. Pat explained, “We will have men come to the chapel service so they can see that there are good men that can be trusted.” The program for these brave survivors is designed to give them back their selfesteem, confidence, and a feeling of security. The peace of God transcends all understanding and guards our hearts and minds through Jesus Christ (Philippians 4:7). Pat and Mary Ann’s hope and prayer is that they can touch each of these traumatized women for Jesus, teach them that they are loved and cared for by God, and help them obtain peace.

Abundant Giving The Lord shows up in a big way when we learn to put our trust in Him and walk (or “run”) in faith. Run For Freedom is a perfect example of running in faith and how God’s people came together to make this dream a reality. Every single furnishing, decoration, piece of electronic equipment, linen, and appliance was donated to the home either directly or through cash donations. A vast majority of these items are brand new or in perfect condition. Many people have donated time and equipment, such as a riding lawn mower, an A/C unit, painting of the entire house, landscaping, gardening, building a kitchen island, installing a deck off the chapel, and the list goes on. The love you feel as you walk through this home is beyond description. It is beautifully decorated as if a family were to reside there. The quality and care that went into each room is heartwarming. The view from every window is astounding. Mary Ann revealed, “When I think of Jesus, He said ‘I go to prepare a place for you’ (John 14:2). Well, the Lord prepared this place for them [the rescued women] and I just sense that. This is God’s house.” Aside from the hundreds of selfless people and volunteers who have given abundantly,

there are staff members who have raised their own financial support to serve Run For Freedom with no salary. Alongside Pat and Mary Ann, these courageous staff members are obediently running by faith each day to answer God’s call on their lives. They all share a vision that this home in Florida will be a model for what Run For Freedom will accomplish throughout the country.

Help Fight Against Trafficking There are a number of ways for individuals to support the fight against human trafficking. Run For Freedom has a program called “Give us a High Five” on their website. A “High Five” is giving a donation to the ministry in the amount of $5.00. Pat shared, “If 200,000 people will do that we will have a million dollars of operating money.” They also have a registry at Target of items needed for the women residing in the Dream Home. Financial support is always a need for ministries, but the Manzos have learned not to limit God’s blessings with just prayer for funds. They know God provides all of their needs, and they are believing for a mobile home to put on the property

for the caretakers, an office space, and vehicles for transporting the women. Want to be more hands on? Get involved in their local chapters or start one in your area. One More Chapters are “the most effective way anybody can help us because it spreads the word in the area,” explained Pat. “Our desire is to open One More Chapters across America. Right now we have a presence in Florida, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts” (www.runforfreedom.net). Local chapters hold Run For Freedom’s signature events: “Dinner and a Movie” and a 5K Race. However, One More Chapters are not limited to these events. The new Tampa chapter will be holding events in the coming months. For more information on the Tampa One More Chapter please contact Tammy La Vigne at Tammy2010@usa.com. Lastly, you can simply join the “Orange Campaign” and tell others why you wear orange for freedom. Please visit Run For Freedom’s website to learn more about Pat and Mary Ann Manzo, human trafficking, and how you can help. Glory!

Vision Casting >>> BY JOHN FAULKNER

ave you ever watched a school of fish? They are beautifully spaced and swimming effortlessly all in the same direction. When they change directions the entire school moves as one fish. Imagine a business so disciplined, yet so nimble, that it could react like a school of fish. Is it possible? Absolutely! The answer is found in Mark 1:16-18 (NKJV): “And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his bother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then Jesus said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.’ They immediately left their nets and followed Him.” Talk about a powerful vision statement! Jesus, in one sentence, was able to convince Simon and Andrew to relinquish their earthly ambitions and follow Him on a journey with eternal consequences. This is vision casting 101. If you want all of your fish (employees) to swim in the same direction you must make the destination worthy

Ephesians 2:10 (NIV) of the journey. Jesus convinced Simon and Andrew to change their destination from catching fish to catching men. He not only got them to change their direction, but also added continually to the core group by casting the same vision. In the next three years Jesus would create a culture strong enough to stay intact through seemingly impossible trials and even after His crucifixion. Two thousand years later the vision is stronger than ever. While some think that Christian business culture is everyone “getting along and making nice,” a more accurate definition would be everyone passionately pursuing the same God-ordained destination. Passion is a by-product of a compelling vision. Have you created a compelling vision in your business? Does everyone know what the destination looks like and will they endure the pain of the journey? Is the destination worth the journey? BEHIND THE PULPIT LOCAL PASTOR’S VOICE

Rockets Red Glare >>> BY PASTOR ED RUSSO

N

o anthem ever written has a more historic, inspiring, and patriotic setting then the “Star Spangled Banner.” It was composed in 1814 at a time when our newly formed country was at war with England. It was one of the darkest moments in American history. After the British had burned Washington, they then moved on to the Baltimore harbor. A horrific assault was unleashed on Ft. McHenry from both land and sea forces of the British. All during the night their fleet focused the cannon fire on the fort whose flagpole flew the Star Spangled Banner of the United States of America.

It has been said by many that freedom is never free. In reality, freedom comes at a high price to those who value it. Our nation’s faith-filled Founding Fathers followed through on their commitment to secure our freedom, and in the process paid a very high price. Of the fifty-six signers of the Declaration of Independence, all suffered and sacrificed greatly for the cause of freedom. The men who signed the document were essentially signing their own death warrants. As he signed the Declaration, John Adams said, “Whether we live or die, sink or swim, succeed or fail, I stand behind this Declaration of Independence. And if God wills, I am ready to die in 1 order that this country might experience freedom.”

Francis Scott Key was held as a captive on one of the British warships. As the battle raged throughout the night, he paced the deck of the ship in silence and darkness wondering if the flag over Ft. McHenry would still be flying when the battle ended. As the darkness of night gave way to morning light, with strained eyes he eagerly looked through the mist and smoke. Above the fort he saw that the flag remained and the fort was secure. Writing on an envelope he found in his pocket, Francis Scott Key wrote the opening words of the “Star Spangled Banner” with patriotic pride. At that moment it was evident that the providential hand of God was upon this nation and that under God, this country is blessed.

In order to fully appreciate why we celebrate the 4th of July, we need to more fully understand some of our foundational principles. July 4th is about so much more than cookouts, parades, and fireworks; it’s about a nation founded upon, rooted in, and established on Judeo-Christian principles. In his farewell address to this young nation, our first president, George Washington said, “Do not let anyone claim tribute of American patriotism if they even 2 attempt to remove religion out of politics.” William Penn (16441718) had expressed earlier, “If we are not governed by God, then 3 we will be ruled by tyrants.” George Washington also said, “It is 2 impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible.”

Nearly forty years prior, the relationship between the 13 original colonies and England became more strained with each passing day. Efforts to resolve the issues were unsuccessful, and it became clear that war was imminent. It was on July 4, 1776 that the Declaration of Independence was both voted and acted upon in the city of Philadelphia. This document effectively separated the original colonies from British rule. It declared our freedom and set in motion a series of events that brought about a war for independence known as “The Great American Revolution.”

Even as God providentially provided for and protected this great nation in the past, we should pray that He would do so in the days ahead.

The JOY FM

HELPING YOU FIND JOY

Linda Morrison, Prayer Warrior An “ordinary” Mom who just couldn’t stop praying for people >>> BY LISA SAPINO

L

inda Morrison moved to Florida with plans to retire. In fact, she and her husband, David, bought a home in a retirement community. Linda figured that her past experiences on the front lines of intercessory ministry and prayer with a large women’s group in Pennsylvania were just that – past experiences. Though, God had other plans. Linda is now the director of The JOY FM Prayer and Crisis Referral Line. Volunteer counselors are available 24/7 at 1-877800-PRAY. “We don’t counsel,” Linda states. “We pray God’s Scriptural promises with the caller.” Linda tells of many miracles that have happened through this simple concept— praying for people in real-time, for their real-life needs and prayer requests. If callers need more than the Prayer

22

Line ministry volunteers can provide, volunteers have access to an extensive and constantly updated list of referrals. The list includes counseling services, mental health resources, a crisis hotline, local churches and food pantries, as well as social service organizations. How did Linda Morrison find herself in the “prayer biz?” Linda laughs at the question. “I was born a regular, average Catholic girl. Somehow, I just always had a very real sense of God in my life. I always seemed to find myself praying for people, so I prayed the rosary for them.” At the time, it was her one tool in her prayer arsenal. “Finally, one day, a friend asked me to give my life to Jesus. It made perfect sense to do that,” recalls Linda. As she prayed for others, though, she felt she was only going so far. She doubted she had the faith to be assured of God’s promises that she

read about in the Bible, but she wanted that assurance. Then the possibility of a debilitating and potentially fatal eye disease brought her up short. She endured extensive testing. The wait for the results was long and anxiety-filled. She was convinced it was going to be bad news and that she might die. She worried about her family. She cried out to God. Linda shares, “Something just clicked in my spirit. I prayed to the Lord that if I was supposed to die, He had somebody better than me for my children.” Linda laughs now at the recollection. “I heard the Lord in an audible voice. He said ‘FINALLY!’ That was the day I gave my life to the Lord wholly and really trusted Him.” The results of the tests came back, and the specialist could find nothing wrong with Linda. She was fine. This experience caused her to pursue a deeper study of God’s Word. As she got more involved

with Christian women’s groups, leaders there taught her how to pray. Linda’s desire to pray for others came from the tremendous sense of empathy she had for those who asked for prayer. She would feel their problems so strongly that she would feel frightened for them. “I became uncomfortable about this,” says Linda. “My friends said it was because I was going to be an intercessor and that it was my calling from God. I was amazed that I could have a calling from God. I was just a normal person.” She learned how to stand on God’s promises and how to pray back those promises. Linda joined a group that prayed for the city of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where she lived at the time. Eventually, the group she was involved with began an intercessory ministry to the State Capitol district. Linda was asked to take charge of the group – acting as a sort of chaplain. The group’s goal was to pray with city and state leaders and politicians. Linda explains, “It was exciting. But I realized as we pursued the idea of praying with these important people, which was wonderful and needed, who was praying for Joe Average? Who’s interceding for the little guy and Mrs. Joe out there?” Linda turned down the job. Through prayer, she asked God what His plan was for her. He unfolded a vision. Linda wrote the vision down and shared it with her women’s group. However, they passed and told her that she was on her own with it. The vision she received led to creating TV commercials

with a Gospel message, purposely airing late at night on local TV after the “call the psychic” type of ads. Linda had many contacts and several local pastors got on board. They helped her purchase airtime and produce the commercials. She had volunteers answering a prayer line. “The commercials,” says Linda, “ended with a slogan – ‘God cares and so do we.’ We’d also say on the ads, ‘a psychic may tell you your future, but only God holds your future, and only God can change it.’ There were people who came out of ‘the psychics,’ people left witchcraft and drugs and came to God. We were able to direct them to local churches and give them a good start in the faith.” As this TV ministry began to come to a close, Linda and David relocated to New Jersey for David’s job. Later, they decided to move to Florida to be near their son. Linda’s sense of irony is evident as she continues her story. “The retirement community…thought we’d love it, but it wasn’t for us. We played golf for a bit, and that became boring. It was a very active place, and it was almost like being on a cruise for year. But it was time to do something for God again.” Linda and David began attending a local evangelical church in the New Port Richey area. The church had heard she’d been involved in prayer ministry before and wanted her to help them with a 24/7 prayer line. The church, though committed, didn’t have the resources to see it come to fruition. Through friends, she met Daniel Bernard

of Somebody Cares Tampa Bay, an area parachurch ministry. He loved the idea too. He told Linda she needed a toll-free number to make it work. “Somehow in our conversations, Daniel kept mentioning that I should talk to the JOY FM. Finally, I did,” states Linda. The Prayer and Crisis Referral Line ministry was born. Linda is continually surprised by some of the places the calls come in from. Due to online streaming and mobile apps for smart phones – the JOY FM runs radio spots about the Prayer and Crisis Referral Line ministry regularly – calls come in from “just about anywhere.” Linda tells the story of a “lady of the night,” as she calls her, who had been caught up in prostitution for 16 years. She had six children. At 3:00 a.m., she cried out to God that she couldn’t do it anymore, and that she needed strength from God to get out. She called the Prayer hotline. The counselors prayed with her and asked to refer her to a church. The woman didn’t believe any church would embrace her. The counselor assured her differently. When the counselor realized that the call was coming from Brooklyn, New York – not Florida – she referred the woman to Linda. Linda, providentially, knew of one church in Brooklyn, and only one. Linda asked the woman how she had gotten the number to the Prayer hotline. The woman said that she was in a back alley, crying out to God, and when she looked down on the pavement of the alley, there was a tattered phonebook. Written on the cover were the words “need prayer and need help, call this number.” The Prayer and Crisis Referral Line’s phone number was written there. The woman borrowed a phone, and made the call. “Just another miracle,” Linda says. “Another transformed life.” All because one “ordinary” wife and mother, Linda Morrison, pursued God and when He asked her to answer His call, she said “yes.” For more about The JOY FM, please visit www.thejoyfm.com.

SALVATION

God is telling us to take refuge in Him! Did you know if you take refuge in the Lord, you’re actually seeking His protection? By seeking His protection, you’re saying “Father, I trust You.” By trusting Him, you’re demonstrating your faith in Him. When you step out in faith, things happen...big things happen! The next time a storm comes your way, can you honestly say “God is on my side?” Are you right with God today? It’s the most important thing you can do in your life. If you want to invite Jesus into your life then say this prayer out loud in faith: Father God, I come before you in the Name of Jesus. Your Word says, “Whosoever shall call on the Name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21, KJV) and “if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9, NKJV). Father God, I believe your Word is truth and I stand on it now. Please forgive me for all my sins and unrighteousness. Today I make Jesus my Lord and Savior and I believe God raised Him from the dead, and He is seated at the right hand of the Father in Heaven. Father I ask that you fill me with your Holy Spirit to guide and teach me as I walk this earth and grow spiritually (Luke 11:13; Luke 12:12). I thank You for making a place for me in Your Kingdom, please guide me in the direction that will eternally please You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

“It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust man.” Psalm 118:8 (NIV)

Our God, A Healer of Broken Lives & Broken Marriages >>>BY LESLIE SHEPHERD

A

dreamer at heart, a young Kristy wrestled with the world’s ideas of happiness. Today, the discerning adult she has fought to become finds joy in the fulfilling dreams that only God can inspire. “A restless spirit seemed to rule my younger years and I struggled with a sense of missing out,” Kristy says. “I longed for things that I did not have in my life.” This restlessness, she explains, almost destroyed the life she shares with her husband Gary and their young son, Bradley. Recalling the destructive road she found herself on in the early years of her marriage, Kristy remembers one evening in particular. “After going to a nightclub, a friend invited me to his place for a small party and I encouraged Gary to come with me,” she says. Once she and Gary arrived, they shared a surprised reaction to an atmosphere charged with alcohol and other undesirable activities. There was a difference, however, in what they each wanted to do about it. “Right away, Gary wanted to leave,” Kristy explains. “At 21 years old I was overwhelmed with the pressures I felt as a wife and a new mother to

26

our colicky baby boy, and that nagging sense of ‘missing out’ crept into my mind.” She was drawn to what seemed to be just a little fun. A pretty blond with soulful blue eyes that flash like a storm between light and gray as she recalls her emotional journey, Kristy admits, “It can be painful to recall past mistakes.” But, with profound gratitude for her Savior, Jesus Christ, she unfolds the story of her life. Reflecting on Gary’s and her past before they met, she begins, “I am close to my parents today, and my mother has been a consistent Christian influence in my life, but many memories of my childhood are difficult. I struggled as a child of divorce, and suffered sexual abuse at the hands of relatives.” In and out of church throughout her childhood, Kristy was drawn to the image of God as a rescuer, and she trusted the Lord as her Savior when she was 12. She points out that Gary’s childhood was also difficult in many ways. “I admire Gary’s determination to not continue into his adult life the sinful things he witnessed in his youth,” she says. “He was exposed to harsh lifestyles, and his mother left when he was a young boy.”

Kristy and Gary came to each other as hurt people, and together found a love that was lighthearted and healing. Kristy tearfully adds, “But, that was in the beginning.” The night of the party at the friend’s house, a seed of resentment was planted and the coming years added fertile soil for it to grow. “I believe when we went out that night, Gary trusted me as his sweet wife, his ‘golden girl.’ We came home with him seeing me as a different person, one he was not sure he could trust,” she says. Without realizing it, their actions and reactions to one another were tearing them apart as a couple and tearing them down as individuals.

SHANA LEIGH PHOTOGRAPHY

Soon they fell into different interests and separate lives. Gary’s job was affected by his need to care for his sick father, so Kristy took a job at a nightclub, a decision that made Gary very uncomfortable. A fear of abandonment and other personal issues carrying over from his childhood began to rise up in him as he silently suffered from his wife’s lack of respect. He became distant, while her need to be close to him only grew. “I needed to talk,” she says. “I met a man at work who was willing to listen, and we became friends.” Although untrue, a rumor circulated that she and her friend were having an affair, and the damage it caused was great once it reached Gary. “I left the job and tried to reach out to him, but he only withdrew further away,” she says.

Overcome with loneliness, Kristy made a choice she would soon regret. “I engaged in a sexual relationship with a man I knew from work, and immediately I realized that I had made a terrible mistake,” she quietly confesses. “The man was cruel to me, and the pain I felt was only greater. I had crossed the line, and I saw no way back.” Spinning out of control, she pursued other inappropriate relationships, only to find deeper despair. Then, the unexpected happened. “I met a kind man with a genuine interest in a relationship with me,” she says. “I began to see a life with this man as an opportunity to clear the slate of my mistakes and to start fresh in a new relationship.” Consumed with frustration over his inability to fix things on his own, Gary humbly turned to God. He made the decision to trust God to repair their lives, and found the strength to lead his family in a way that he had never experienced before. He confronted Kristy with his suspicions about her indiscretions, and asked for her forgiveness of his own poor judgments, including confiding in a female friend. “It hurt to realize the communication I wanted so badly with him was being

shared with someone else,” she says. “I could not believe the tangled knot our lives had become, and there was so much more that he still did not know. It seemed easier to start over separate from him.” The coming weeks presented more unexpected change. “Gary told me that he was going to church, and wanted me to join him,” she says. With her secrets tightly bottled up, she reluctantly agreed. Then, he suggested seeking counseling with a pastor, and again, she agreed. Confronted with the truth of the God she once loved so completely, Kristy humbled her heart and her resolve began to break. “I knew I did not want a life without Gary,” she says. Kristy later ended the relationship with the other man after telling Gary everything. “You will not be able to love me once you know,” she said to him. When he responded by wrapping her in his arms, she realized that no one could give such kindness and forgiveness to the very person who had caused so much damage without receiving those strengths from God. “Gary’s response allowed me to believe that God could restore my life, as well,” she says. “It was because of his trust in the Lord that our marriage was placed in worthy hands, and I was able to leave the past at the feet of Jesus.” Years later, Gary and Kristy are thriving as they deal with life’s joys and heartaches together, along with the ever present inclusion of God’s will and guidance. They also share many hopes for the future, which include giving their son Bradley a little brother or sister. Restoration found its way to another symbol of their love. “My wedding ring had been broken and taken apart over the years,” she explains. “In March of this year, we celebrated our 10th anniversary, and Gary held the repaired ring in his hand and once again placed it on my finger.” Kristy’s prayer is that other marriages can be restored through hearing the story of God’s healing love in her own life. Saddened by the controlling pain that can so easily overtake the lives of hurting people, she once again reflects on the restlessness of her youth. “Actually, I was on to something in thinking that I was missing out,” she says with a big smile. “I was missing out on God.”

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28 (NIV) July 2010   Love+Faith+Hope

Breaking the Cycle Restoring Liberty in the Land of the Free >>> BY TOMMY BURRUS

A revival that became known as the Great Awakening really set the stage for the founding of the United States of America. The ministries and preaching of William Tennent, Jonathan Edwards, and George Whitefield (among others) sparked the revival fires and brought thousands to salvation. As a result the colonists realized that they did not need King George or his state churches to make a connection with God. While the Great Awakening was a spiritual movement, it impacted social, political, and cultural life in the colonies. The Biblical values and principles of the Founding Fathers influenced their fight for freedom as well as their efforts to form a new nation. They believed and expressed that their cause was a righteous cause led by Almighty God. In fact, the Founders gave credit to Divine Providence for their success. George Washington said, “I am sure that never was a people, who had more reason to acknowledge a Divine interposition in their affairs, than those of the United States; and I should be pained to believe that they have forgotten that agency, which was so often manifested during our Revolution, or that they failed to consider the omnipotence of that God who is alone able to protect them.” 1

30

OverflowMag.com   July 2010

“Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.” Proverbs 14:34 (KJV) However, since that time, our nation has strayed. The problems that plague our nation today are really secondary to our spiritual problems. In fact, America is not the first nation to have taken this path. Many other nations have followed the same pattern that America has followed. The spiritual decay of America is at the heart of a very old cycle. This same cycle can be observed throughout the Old Testament. The book of Judges is a good example. The Israelites enjoyed freedom and blessings from God. They began to take God for

granted and focus on worldly pursuits (Judges 2:2-3). In doing so, they neglected the spiritual training of their children which resulted in a generation that did not know or follow God. As Judges 2:10 (KJV) says, “…there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.” The succeeding generation turned to the gods of the world and completely forsook the One True God. Judges 2:12 (KJV) says, “And they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the LORD to anger.” At this point, God removed His help and protection and they found themselves in bondage. “And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and He delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and He sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies” (Judges 2:14, KJV). The people of Israel then came to realize their predicament and humbled themselves before God and repented of their backsliding ways (Judges 3:9). God then called deliverers who lead the nation to freedom (Judges 2:16, 3:9). The cycle reset and started all over, but, of course, none of this happened overnight. In fact, this entire cycle is said to take approximately 200 years. It is not difficult at all to see the parallels between ancient Israel and the United States today. We have strayed from our dependence on God and focused instead on materialistic and secular pursuits. America has neglected the spiritual training of our children and has replaced God with secular humanism. We are facing the consequences of our choices represented by various crises.

FREEDOM DELIVERANCE

NEGLECT

REPENTANCE

ABANDONMENT BONDAGE

America is not the only nation to abandon God, nor is she the only country facing these calamities. However, there is not another country in the world where I would prefer to live. I am proud to be an American. Our nation is still a beacon of freedom to which multitudes flee for refuge. Despite the serious difficulties which we face, we still enjoy many liberties as citizens of the United States. However, if we hope to get back on track as a nation and once again enjoy the abundant blessings of God, we must reach that stage of the cycle where we humble ourselves before God and repent. God told Solomon in 2 Chronicles 7:14 (KJV), “If My people, which are called by My name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” No economic plan will substitute for God’s people humbling themselves seeking reconciliation. It would be unwise to expect that deliverance and freedom can come without God. We do need fundamental transformation, but the kind of transformation required involves us returning to God. Though Alexis de Tocqueville is not the source, the quote that is often misattributed to him is still true: “In the end, the state of the Union comes down to the character of the people. I sought for the greatness and genius of America in her commodious harbors and her ample rivers, and it was not there. In the fertile fields and boundless prairies, and it was not there. In her rich mines and her vast world commerce, and it was not there. Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits, aflame with righteousness, did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because she is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.” Whoever first penned these words recognized that fundamental fact that the secret of America’s success is found in American citizens who pursue obedience to God. America is primed for another Great Awakening. Revival and national healing may seem unrealistic, humanly speaking, but our nation can rise to great heights again by following the formula of 2 Chronicles 7:14. We can boldly proclaim, “…our God whom we serve is able to deliver us…” (Daniel 3:17, KJV). Glory!

HEALTHY LIFE

Breaking the Glass Ceiling

H

ave you ever felt like your workout just stopped working? No matter how many hours you put in at the gym, do the results just seem to level off? Well there is actually something you can do about it.

Instead of doing the same workout week after week, month after month, and not getting any results, try changing it up. After eight weeks of doing the same routine, change your workout for the next four weeks. If you have been lifting heavy, then go light for four weeks. Also, change the exercises you have been doing. Try something new, and keep your workouts exciting. At the end of the four week routine, take a week off. For this week, you can do cardio if you want to but don’t lift any weights. Then, you can start the cycle again.

By changing your workout routine, your body has to adapt and change. The week of rest gives your body the break it needs to allow your muscles to recuperate thus yielding continuous results. Also, knowing that there is an end to your workout routine can give you the fuel necessary to push yourself a little harder and go to the gym when you don’t feel like going. Let’s face it; there are some days when you just don’t feel like working out. However, when you know that you have worked so hard for several weeks and there are only one or two more weeks before your week off, you’ll think twice about skipping a workout. So the next time you think you have hit a glass ceiling with your workout know that it is time to change your routine. Remember to rack your weights, be safe, and always have fun. The information you receive from the Healthy Life section is not meant to substitute for medical advice. Before starting a new diet or exercise routine consult your doctor.

The Choice of Freedom >>>BY CHRIS CHERP

W

e were all created by a kind and gentle God. I have heard some people ask, “If God is a good and loving God, then why would He allow this or that to happen?” The answer is simple, God is a gentleman and He has given His creation the authority to make our own choices, which influences the outcome of our future. “Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, that you and your descendants might live!” (Deuteronomy 30:19, NLT) The choice is ours, life or death, blessings or curses. Under the blessing are eternal

life, prosperity, and healing, to name just a few. Eternal death, poverty, and sickness are under the curse. After the fall of Adam, God created a new covenant through Jesus Christ which redeems us from the curse. This new covenant allows all those who believe to live under the blessing through the choices we make. Deuteronomy 28:15-68 paints a clear picture of the curse of the law and how it impacts all who disobey the Word of God. When we choose to disobey the Word of God, we tie God’s hands because He will not take over the authority of our free will. When we are disobedient to God our lives go back to being under the curse. We have a choice, and that choice determines whether we live a blessed life or a cursed life.

Eternal Life

I can remember as a youth looking around the church that I attended thinking, “There are a lot of messed up people in this church.” As adults we tend to progress in life thinking that we are in total control of our lives. It may work for a while, but then rock bottom comes crashing in. For some, it may be unemployment or a type of addiction, and for others, it may be a battle with disease or a lost relationship. Looking back, I now realize that those people at my church were the ones that hit rock bottom and had come to the realization that they couldn’t do life successfully on their own. They chose to turn to God. Even though I received Jesus as my Lord and Savior when I was eight years old, the journey of life after high school took me away from my walk with God and I became self-seeking. My eyes were re-opened to the love of Jesus by some experiences I had in the corporate world. During that time, I realized that I had not been depending on Jesus for anything. In my prideful thinking, I was self-sufficient and self-made. It was through witnessing the hardships of friends and colleagues at work that allowed me to see that we’re not in control of anything, even though we may think we are. One day during my long drive home from work I began to think about my life and how I had fallen out of relationship with Jesus. The chilling realization of Jesus’ Words came to me, “But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before My Father in heaven”(Matthew 10:33, NIV). I then imagined eternal damnation and how my worst day on earth would not even compare to one minute in the lake of fire. Needless to say it was during that drive home I made an eternal choice. I asked God to forgive me of my ignorance and for Jesus to take control of my life and use me as He had planned. I rededicated my life to Jesus Christ (Romans 10:9). As long as you have breath, it’s never too late to make Jesus your Lord and Savior. Praise God! Make the right choice and choose eternal life through Jesus Christ.

Prosperity

God has established His covenant upon the earth but it takes more than just knowing about it to activate it. Psalm 112

tells of a man that is blessed by God. The blessings begin with reverence for the Lord by one who delights greatly in His Word. Through obedience to God’s Word the blessing is activated (Deuteronomy 28:1-14). In other words, choosing to do what the Word of God says.

receiving of the Holy Spirit. Then, we have the strength to live out what we learn from God. We must choose to be doers of the Word. Additionally, we shouldn’t just take another man’s word for it; we should study the Word of God for ourselves and meditate on it day and night.

Psalm 112 goes on to say that the blessed man’s descendents will be mighty on earth, wealth and riches will be in his house and his righteousness will endure forever. The heart of the righteous establishes the covenant between man and God. The blessed man trusts in God and does not fear.

Healing

Part of the blessing that overtook our forefather Abraham’s life was material blessing. “Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold” (Genesis 13:2, NKJV). In Galatians 3:14, we see that this same blessing is ours through Jesus Christ. “May He give you and your descendants the blessing given to Abraham, so that you

“Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.” 3 John 1:2 (NKJV) may take possession of the land where you now live as an alien, the land God gave to Abraham” (Genesis 28:4, NIV). Let me be clear, there is more to prosperity than just material things. “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers” (3 John 1:2, NKJV). Some of the other characteristics of prosperity include: peace, wellness, safety, happiness, right standing with God, and the rest of our inheritance that comes from our ever loving God - the God of more than enough. Prosperity is having all our needs met in abundance physically, mentally, and spiritually. To activate this blessing in our lives we must go to the Word of God and learn about our rights under the New Covenant. Our spirits must prosper first through the

Our creator is a supernatural God. The things that He is capable of doing, man can’t comprehend with his own understanding. When we choose not to believe the Word of God we limit God and what He can do in our lives. Here again is a choice, and that choice is to believe the amazing things God has promised us, His children. By choosing to believe God’s Word and acknowledging Him in all we do, we give God permission to direct our paths for His great works (Proverbs 3:6). Before Jesus ascended into Heaven and took His place at the right hand of God He said, “And these signs will follow those who believe … they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover” (Mark 16:17-18, NKJV). When we make the choice to completely trust God to fulfill His Word, then we can boldly lay hands on those who are sick and they will recover! Not by our power but by the power of our Amazing God. This is the choice of taking God at His Word and spreading the Kingdom of God. When we decide to put God’s Word first place in our lives and stand on it as final authority, the blessing will begin to overtake us in all areas of our lives. When we have faith in God and become thankful for all that He does for us, we then qualify to receive more. This is when we will begin to delight greatly in God’s Word and those around us will see it by the life we live and want to be a part of it. Life is full of choices. The choices we make can leave an eternal impact on our lives and those around us. Learn what God has promised us through the great contract He paid for with the blood of Jesus, the New Covenant found in the Bible. Choose to study, live, and meditate on His Living Word daily and watch how you will be overtaken with the blessings of God! Choose life and life more abundantly. Glory!

God’s Love For You Is Over The Top >>> BY: LISA CIGANEK

I

magine…thousands of women fill an arena typically packed with sports or concert fans. These women laugh, cry, and sing – all with one voice. They line up to buy books, CDs, and T-shirts to bring the experience home with them. So where are they? A Tupperware convention? No, these ladies are enjoying Women of Faith! Women of Faith is an exciting, enriching (and usually sold out) two-day event just for “the girls.” It’s like spending the weekend with your closest girlfriends, only on a grander scale. Even if you go by yourself, you won’t be alone! The speakers are real women; they speak from their experiences and share what Christ has done in their lives. Using humor, drama, and music, the Women of Faith team connects with women at every stage of their lives. Whether you’re single, married with kids, married without kids, a young adult woman, or in the golden years of your life, Women of Faith events offer you a time to refresh your relationship with Christ, relax, and build relationships with women from all over. It’s a chance for you to bring that unsaved friend or a loved one that hasn’t been to church in a long time.

This year, Women of Faith brings its “Over the Top” event to Tampa on October 15-16, 2010 at the St. Petersburg Times Forum. What’s “Over the Top” about it? First, the lineup of speakers and musicians: Patsy Clairmont, Lisa Whelchel (yes, from The Facts of Life TV show), Marilyn Meberg, Anita Renfroe, Sandi Patty, Mary Beth & Steven Curtis Chapman, and Mandisa. Then there is drama with Nicole Johnson. Most importantly, though, it’s a weekend for you to realize that God’s love for you is “Over The Top.” Why don’t you join us and find out how extravagant God’s love is for you? God and America >>> BY VICTORIA BURRUS AGE 14

I heard they are trying to take God away, From schools and money and the pledge we say. I know my opinion doesn’t mean much, But right now our nation is on a crutch. Why is it that when we pray, It causes trouble and offense today. But other people can rant and cuss, Even if it offends us. Life would be better in this great nation, If we looked for God through His creation. Our country was founded on a Christian base, By Founding men seeking God’s grace. Our world faces many problems today, But God can help us find our way. If we would just choose to believe, We would find our stress relieved. Satan wants us to rebel, But by following God we shall do well. And as long as God is near, There is nothing we have to fear. July 2010   Love+Faith+Hope

RESOURCES FOR YOUR SPIRIT

Romans 12:2 (NIV) “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind....”

It is vital to our spirituality that we continually renew our minds with the Word of God and meditate on His Word. Our Bibles are the most important resource we have to accomplish spiritual growth; however, we do believe in the importance of feeding our spirits with edifying books, sermons, and music that will build us up and keep Jesus Christ at the forefronts of our daily lives. Each month we will share impactful books, movies, CDs, and even websites that are inspirational and foster stronger relationships with our Father.

MY ROCK

SCRIPTURES I STAND ON

John 3:16 (NKJV) “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” I chose this verse because it gives me hope. It shows how big God’s love is and that if I believe in Him I will live in Heaven one day. (age 12)

Ecclesiastes 9:10 (NIV) “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might ….” Chiropractic is from the Greek words meaning “done by hand.” This scripture keeps me focused on letting the healing come from Above, down, inside, and out! I use my hands, His hands, to deliver a spinal adjustment to an area of musculoskeletal & nerve system compromise in order to release His power within, so healing can occur. I do this as though each patient is dependent upon what I do.
