Counseling Beliefs
Renewal Through Relationship
Tampa Bay Christian Counseling Center is a Christian counseling practice offering comprehensive services to the Tampa Bay area. Working with clients of all ages, our counselors help guide individuals and couples to relational wholeness in Christ.
At Tampa Bay Christian Counseling Center, our counselors create an environment where people can be themselves, knowing that the counseling process is built on trust, hope, care and most importantly Jesus Christ. We walk alongside our clients in their spiritual journeys, going beyond outward symptoms to the inward cause and inviting genuine change in Christ.
We believe that the best counseling isn’t based on a number of steps or easy answers. It is a process that helps people identify where they have built a life apart from God and that calls them to an authentic relationship with Him.
Tampa Bay Christian Counseling Center believes there is a profound difference in content and results between counseling based in God’s Word and secular counseling approaches. We offer real, Biblically based counseling that presents solutions to people’s problems in contrast to symptom focused psychotherapy which ultimately does not look to God’s Word for solutions.
It is a relationship where we enter deeply into the lives of those in pain and crisis to bring them to a place where they can love God, love others and love themselves. We believe lasting change and personal wholeness have their genesis within a relationship with Christ.

Overflow met with David, a 20 year old missionary on his way to England. Find out how God renewed his life.
We know Jesus is our Savior, but too often we disregard His Lordship.
Every child deserves love and protection from a parent. Learn how you can make a difference in the life of an orphan.

FROM THE EDITOR Our feature Magnify Him goes behind the scenes of a young man’s life whose childhood could have easily led him to a destructive, short life. However, this 20 year old missionary is now on fire to increase the Kingdom of God all because of the love of Jesus. I know you’ll be touched by this story of a life restored (page 18). Unfortunately, there are children around the world suffering because they don’t have anyone here on earth to care for them. Read “Voice for the Orphans” by Veronica Brocato and learn how you can make a difference in the life of an orphan on page 34.
Dear Friends, The kids have returned to school and life should be getting back to your normal routine. Why not plan a fun-filled night for the family? Maybe even an evening that supports a great cause, like going to the Hold on to Haiti benefit concert featuring NEWWOLRDSON on October 8th at Bell Shoals Church in Brandon. This is a free concert being put on by Love Haiti Missions Project. Lisa Sapino with Joy FM just recently caught up with NEWWORLDSON and was able to ask some questions about the band and the guys behind it. Check it out on page 16. Overflow is honored to have Pat Layton on the cover this month. Amanda Wright had the opportunity to sit down with Pat, founder of A Woman’s Place Ministries (and Life Impact Network), and learn how God transformed her life. Pat’s story is uplifting and encouraging; you don’t want to miss it (see page 10). If you are a Christian, then Jesus is your Savior. But have you made Him your Lord too? Before you answer that, I encourage you to read Chris Cherp’s article on page 32. Learn what it means to be under Jesus’ Lordship.

“...My soul magnifies the Lord, And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.“
God’s Protection & Healing I was 23 weeks pregnant when my water broke. Doctors kept me in the hospital and put me on bed rest. I was given instructions to rest, but to realize that my baby would not live. Some doctors told me that my baby would have a mental disorder or body malfunction at birth. I renounced all those words and believed that I would have a healthy baby. I was also told to go ahead and have a c-section because my health was in danger and my baby’s fluid inside the womb was too low. Well one miracle is that my fluid kept increasing and increasing back to the normal level, and they could not understand it. My baby was also moving around normally as a healthy baby. I spent 4 months in the hospital. When I gave birth the doctors saw a new sack that had formed to protect the baby. They could not understand how it was possible for this to occur. I now have a beautiful healthy one year-old that is talking, jumping, and laughing. He has no malfunctions, disorders, or complications. I have actually had less trouble with him then my other two kids. Wow! God is amazing! He will rescue us from times of trouble! God protected me and my baby from harm and death. >>> Amber, Tampa
Set Free God is good. He has blessed me so much in this last year. He has set me free and He loves me. I am in my twenties but have been through a lot, from seeing my mom beat by her ex-husband and believing there is no hope to becoming addicted to drinking, clubs, and the party life. I got to the point where I was going to the club four to five times a week and drinking every day. I was trying to hide the pain, hurt, and emptiness that I was feeling, but it didn’t work. I still woke up with the same hurt and the same problems. But to top it off, I woke up broke. I felt empty, lost, and confused until God showed me the way and what I had to do. I was trying to fill the emptiness with the things of the world and that wasn’t cutting it. I couldn’t fill the void. I started seeking attention from guys to try to fill it, but that didn’t work either. I soon recognized that only God could fill that emptiness. I became pregnant and was expecting a child. Months passed and I had a miscarriage. It was the worst feeling in the world. I fell into a deep depression that made me draw farther from God and drink even

more. Then I realized that God can bring us out of any situation, no matter how big or small. He has your back! He will never leave you nor forsake you. If you take a step towards God, He will take two steps towards you. God has a plan and purpose for everyone’s life, and I just couldn’t understand why He wanted to use someone like me and love someone like me. I soon realized that God is love and His love is real. He told me, “Don’t think that just because you have done things you’re not proud of that I can’t use you.” The devil is trying to take grip of this generation and it’s time we take a stand and fight. I still have some areas I’m working on, but I know that God is bringing me through it. I know that with Him I can do all things. I’m still in the world, but no longer of it. I let go of all my iniquities for the free gift of salvation! >>> F.E., Tampa

God’s Perfect Love I strayed from God several years ago. At the time I was so blinded and I didn’t realize it. I was going through all the motions, going to church, etc. No one knew what I was dealing with. There was a lot of deception and manipulation. I did not have the right guidance during this time. I was a totally different person. I was playing with fire and ended up in the enemy’s camp where he wanted me to be.
truly repented, you realize when this is happening and you will not go back. The enemy is a liar and a deceiver! Don’t ever forget that! God will bring you through your situation. There are always consequences to our choices in life. We learn and become stronger in the Lord. We can give God the glory for pulling us through it and know that we are worth it.
I went through depression during this period of time. With someone’s help, I did finally wake up and realize what I needed to do. I knew this was not what God had planned for me. God opened my eyes and revealed that He was right there with me as He always had been during my entire life. I knew this period in my life saddened God’s heart. I truly repented and cried out to God.
My prayer is that we can all be aware and know when something is coming from the Lord or from the enemy. Be cautious of the wolves in sheep’s clothing because they are out there. Remember God loves you unconditionally. He knows your heart. Let’s be obedient to God and come before Him with true repentance of the things we have done wrong in our lives. I thank God for His mercy, grace, forgiveness, and compassion in my life. Without God, nothing really matters.
It took a while to overcome this situation. The enemy will try to throw it back in your face and tell you lies. I do believe if you have

Authority through Citizenship Recently I experienced one of the coolest things. In the beginning of the week I woke up and felt a sore throat coming on. The normal progression for me is to have drainage run down one side of my throat for two days followed by the same experience on the other side. In the past, I would basically have a sore throat for about a week. However, this time I stood on God’s Word. The Word of God says that when we are born again we become citizens of Heaven (Philippians 3:20). As citizens of Heaven, we have been given the authority over all the power of the enemy and nothing will by any means hurt us (Luke 10:18-20). This time when I felt the sore throat coming on, I renewed my mind by reading the Word of God and then I told the drainage and sore throat to stop and leave me immediately - in Jesus’ Name. I had to do this several times throughout the course of two days, but I am writing to praise the Lord Jesus because it worked. I never got a sore throat and it never slowed me down! Praise Jesus! >>>D.F., Tampa

“I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my spokesman to the world.”
Jeremiah 1:5 (NLT)
P
atricia (“Pat”) Layton, President and Founder of A Woman’s Place Ministries/Life Impact Network, shared that Jeremiah 1:5 was one of the very first verses she learned after she gave her heart to Jesus. This verse is profoundly fitting for Pat’s journey. As with each of us, God knew Pat before He formed her in her mother’s womb. From the very beginning, He had a plan for her life. As a teenager and young adult, her lifestyle was wrought with bad decisions, but God used what the enemy meant for evil to transform Pat’s life into one that was ordained by Him from the start. Pat was called to help hurting women heal and share God’s heart on the subject of the unborn.
Saved by Grace Pat was raised in Savannah, Georgia – the oldest of four girls. She attended church on holidays and knew of God,

but as a girl, she never had a personal relationship with Jesus. Pat said, “I started becoming a wretch at 15.” She ran off at 16 to marry her high school sweetheart. She ended up pregnant at 17 and became a single mom by the time she was 18. Her teenage husband decided he didn’t want to be a father or husband. She went back to school to get her degree and described her life as, “experimenting with everything.” In college, she met the man that would become her husband of 34 years. Pat continued living her previous lifestyle, and she ended up pregnant by her fiancé while planning their wedding. At this point, her son was five years old. She was scared to start another marriage with a baby so early on in their relationship. She didn’t want to be “trapped,” and she didn’t want to tell her parents. Pat decided to have an abortion and explained, “I was a very liberated young woman. I fought for a woman’s right to choose abortion when I was in college.… I wrote some articles
>>> PHOTOGRAPHED BY SHANA LEIGH PHOTOGRAPHY
that were published about abortion…. I was picketing and writing to try to get abortion clinics open in Tampa.” Pat was unable to get the abortion before the wedding, so when they came back from their honeymoon she was scheduled to go in. There were complications during the abortion process, as Pat was unaware that she was allergic to anesthesia. She went into respiratory failure and the doctor had to perform an emergency procedure. As a result, she became ill and found out that the abortion was not fully completed when she stopped breathing. Parts of the fetus were left behind. “I had to go back in and be re-aborted…. So, basically that was the day I died,” Pat revealed. Until this point, she had never thought about the pregnancy in terms
of a baby. She was distraught and ashamed. She shared, “That was the dark point of my life and I spent the next seven years in selfdestruction.” During this time, they were blessed with their second son; however, Pat still had not dealt with her grief. She hated herself for the abortion and pushed her husband away. They eventually separated. One night God called out to Pat and asked, “What are you doing with your life?” It was an awakening. She went to her husband’s apartment and asked him to take her back. He agreed and she started going to church with her sons. She was a little nervous about going to “Big Church,” so she decided to hide out in the Sunday school classroom with her younger son. She was around so much, that eventually they asked her to teach Sunday
school at the fifth grade level. Pat explained, “They gave me a curriculum to study and God in His wisdom started unveiling His truth…. As I was teaching my fifth grade students, I was learning the Gospel.” Then Pat was invited to a women’s retreat. An altar call was held and she went forward and turned her life over to the Lord. “My life completely turned around,” she said, and within six months, the entire Layton family made the decision to live for Christ.
A Witness of God’s Mercy Pat started going to Bible studies and God gave her a love for His Word immediately. She began studying abortion and the Church and found out what God says about the sanctity of life.

Full Circle
“For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, Your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in Your book before one of them came to be.” (Psalm 139:13-16, NIV) After reading this passage for the first time, Pat had so many questions: Why didn’t anyone tell her how God felt about abortion? What does the Church do with women who have had abortions? “No one had any answers, so I got together with a Christian counselor and a couple of Bible study teachers and we wrote ‘Sisters of Rachel’ (which was later named ‘The Healing Journey’). It’s a post-abortion healing curriculum,” Pat explained. She knew that there had to be many women out there (like her) that were hiding under a mountain of guilt with nowhere to turn. Pat started talking about abortion with people and sharing the curriculum she had written. A Tampa newspaper reporter called Pat. The reporter had heard about her outreach
and asked for an interview. Pat shared her personal story of abortion and how God healed her broken heart. The reporter ended up sharing some of her personal experiences with Pat and then received the Lord on Pat’s living room floor. “It was the first time I had ever led anybody to the Lord…she went back and wrote about what I was doing and it was picked up by the Associated Press. So that’s how I started the ministry,” Pat shared. It began in the spirit of Psalm 139 so that “people may cherish life and see God’s plan and purpose for every human life” (www.lifeimpactnetwork.org). As a result of the article, Pat began receiving phone calls from hurting women around the nation who had abortions in their past, and she started ministering to them. She kept asking various organizations why there wasn’t a crisis pregnancy center in Tampa. Then one day God dropped it in her heart, she was the one that was supposed to open a center. At the time, Pat owned an insurance business so she decided to convert the insurance office into the North Tampa Crisis Pregnancy Center. The need for a center proved to be overwhelming and over the next 24 years they had to move and expand several times. The name of the center changed to A Woman’s Place and grew to offer free pregnancy tests, support groups, ultrasounds, counseling, mentoring, medical referrals, teen services, and adoption
In the summer of 1988, right before Pat was getting ready to open the pregnancy center, her husband, Mike, woke up one morning and said, “Pat, I think we should adopt a little girl.” Then he went to work that same day and received a phone call from an attorney friend. He wanted to know if the Layton’s knew of anyone that would like to adopt a little girl. Mike called Pat and said, “Do you believe in divine appointments?” The baby girl was born to a 16 year old girl at 22 weeks gestation, weighing only one and a half pounds, and measuring 10 inches long. She was a fighter and kept living even though the doctors didn’t believe she would make it. As she got stronger the baby was put on an adoption list. Pat and Mike adopted her to complete their family of five. Pat revealed, “That was the full circle of our lives and our restoration; in spite of what we had done, God gave us this beautiful little girl.” “I’ve had a passion for adoption [ever since],” Pat shared. Through Pat’s experience with the ministry she has come into contact with numerous women that need help. She has a passion to help women find a solution to their crisis pregnancy, including the option of adoption. Pat explained that a lot of adoption agencies do not have the resources to help the birth mothers in the way that their ministry can. A Woman’s Place has a fullystaffed pregnancy center as well as a team of volunteer counselors, so they can provide resources to the birth mothers for as long as needed. The ministry’s adoption agency, Woven Basket, opened last year. Seven babies were adopted and they are working on seven more for this year. All of the clients have come through the pregnancy center. “With a lot of our adoptions, the women have literally come from the abortion table next door…. We have an angel that God has put over there. When the girls start crying or if they act unsure, they’ll send them to us to get an ultrasound. Ninety percent of the time they will change their minds about abortion,” Pat said. Van Dyke Church donated the funds to the ministry to purchase a 4-D ultrasound

machine, which produces a high-resolution (very clear) image of the baby. Pat explained that these images “connect the heart of the mother with her child,” and can cause a birth mother to reconsider her decision to abort the baby. Through Woven Basket, Pat hopes to share that adoption is not considered God’s “Plan B.” “I know for a fact, my daughter was planned for our home…. We [want] to help the world see adoption in a different way,” Pat stated.
Advancing a Culture of Life Life Impact Network was established in 2008 as the umbrella to cover all of the ministries and outreaches A Woman’s Place expanded into, all of which protect the sanctity of life. This includes Teen Impact, a prevention ministry that promotes sexual abstinence among Tampa Bay area teens, as well as Parent Power, an outreach that equips parents of teens to be “the primary educators of their children when it comes to sexuality and character” (www.whatisimpact.com). Pat shared that the ministry’s abstinence education has been in every high school in Hillsborough County through the WAIT (Why Am I Tempted) Training curriculum, which uses interactive lessons to promote ways to refrain from sexual relationships until marriage. “We’ve ministered to over 60,000 students,” Pat said. Another large part of the Life Impact Network is post-abortion healing. The curriculum Pat wrote several years ago has
14
OverflowMag.com Sept 2010
been used in A Woman’s Place and other pregnancy centers across the nation. “God used it for my healing, and then my desire was to share it with other women who had abortions,” Pat explained. After 20 years in ministry, Pat began sensing God calling her into another direction. Her son Andy took over as Executive Director and she began seeking God for the next step in her life. Right around this time, a friend of Pat’s came to her and said, “I think God wants to publish The Healing Journey.” Her friend Jane felt led to pull all the post-abortion healing materials together and put it in a presentable format. As Jane worked to put everything together, she prayed and the Lord spoke to her heart. She told Pat, “God told me that LifeWay is going to publish it.” Pat couldn’t believe it, but she shared Jane’s vision with a former volunteer of the center, who worked at a LifeWay Christian Store. It turns out that the volunteer used to work for the Vice President of LifeWay and she decided to send him an e-mail. A few weeks later Pat received an e-mail from him. He said, “We’ve been praying for a post-abortion healing curriculum.” So, in 2007 the curriculum was published by Serendipity House, a division of LifeWay, and it took on a new name, Surrendering the Secret. Pat and LifeWay turned the curriculum into a study guide for individuals or small group settings. The leadership kit includes a leader guide, a learner guide, and an eight-part DVD presentation. “We have about 500 trained
leaders so far around the nation,” Pat joyfully shared. The materials are available at www.surrenderingthesecret.com or any LifeWay Christian Store. When Pat gave her life to the Lord in 1984 at that women’s retreat, she remembered the speaker that led her to the Lord. She knew then that someday she would like to become a speaker and touch lives the way this woman had touched hers. The Lord fulfilled this desire in Pat’s heart and she is now on LifeWay’s women’s leadership training team. She travels the country training church leaders to teach the Surrendering the Secret curriculum. In 2010 Pat also began the “Imagine Me… Set Free” Women’s Conference, which has three parts: peace with the past, purpose in the present, and passion for the future. “The sole purpose of this unique conference is to help women understand and experience the ‘One and Only’ Woman they are to God and to identify His ultimate plan for their lives” (www.imaginemesetfree.com).
Support How can the community help support Life Impact Network? Pat shared, “We have two major events a year.” Every spring they hold a Walk for Life at two locations on the same day. One is usually on Bayshore in Tampa and the other is held at Idlewild Baptist Church in Lutz. The second major event each year is The Light of Life Gala, a time to celebrate God’s goodness. The ministry shares their mission and reflects on what God has done in the many lives touched over the past year. The Gala will be held this year on November 4, 2010 at the Hyatt Regency Westshore, and the event is open to the public. You can buy individual tickets or sponsor a table, which will help underwrite the cost of the event. You won’t want to miss this special evening with guest speakers Lauren Dungy and Tampa Bay Buccaneers General Manager Mark Dominik with his wife Amy. THE JOY FM
HELPING YOU FIND JOY
An Interview by: Lisa Sapino
N
ewworldson recently played at Freedom Fest in Pinellas Park. I was there with the JOY FM working a ticket table across from the “backstage area” of the outdoor park venue. It was interesting to watch the guys walk around among the crowd, as local opening bands took the stage. Barely anyone recognized Joel, Mark, Rich, and Josh. Freedom Fest, an Independence Day celebration of Christian values, is geared toward reaching out to the local community, so some of the attendees may not have heard of Newworldson before. They came looking for free fireworks. However, the crowd got much more than fireworks, with Newworldson delivering another stellar performance of foot-stomping, move-your-body, soul-firing music. The “Sons” won’t be able to blend in much longer. Everywhere they go, they bring their signature energy and vibrant gospel-funk style to an unsuspecting crowd. Newworldson leaves rabid fans in their wake. The crowds are wising up; rather, they’re waking up. Newworldson’s sound is unique and yet familiar, raucously rocking, but reverent. Since signing with Inpop Records in 2007, Newworldson has received many music award nominations and several awards. They have twice won the Roots Album of The Year at the Gospel Music Association Canada Covenant Awards, and they have also won in the categories of Best New Artist and Group of the Year. Their music video of “Working Man” earned the Number One spot on the Gospel Music Channel. We had a minute to chat so I asked the guys from Newworldson to fill me in: Lisa Sapino (LS): In reading reviews about Newworldson, a few words keep coming up: “infectious,” “original,” “artistic,” and “Grammyworthy.” What one word would you use to describe your music? Newworldson (NWS): Gospel
16

LS: You’ve been on tour in Europe, and most recently in Sweden. I’ve read that your latest album has a more “international” sound thanks to your touring outside Canada and the U.S. Your music is also described as “roots music, with Gospel, blues, funk, and rock sensibilities.” How did you come to find your style and your sound? NWS: Each member of Newworldson has his own musical influences and we all have professional experience playing many different genres. When we got together for the first time, we never discussed the direction this band would take. So our sound is a blend of everything from Sixties Soul and Jazz-Funk to Reggae and Gospel. Over the past three years of touring and recording, we’ve refined it into something all our own. I guess the philosophy has always been to keep things spontaneous and organic. I would say we are like an R&B band that plays with the force and energy of a rock combo. LS: One reviewer said your lyrics are much deeper in your latest release “Newworldson.” Do you agree with that? Was that by design or did that just evolve? NWS: It’s difficult to answer that question when you’re so close to all the repertoire. On Salvation Station, we were really exploring the roots of Soul and Gospel, not just musically but through the lyrics as well. These genres are all about communicating a story or a message in a simple way, especially using call-and-response between the lead singer and the chorus or back-up vocalists. This time around
we ventured into a lot of new territory which in some cases called for more developed verses and pop soluble arrangements. Maybe we had more to say this time around. But we certainly wouldn’t want any of our listeners to dismiss songs like “Borderline” and “Down from the Mountain” from our previous album.
this album that we’ve hardly had time to write. But ultimately God makes the plans...
LS: Which of you is the lyrics writer? Do you all contribute?
NWS: We’re all married – some of us have been married longer than others. Mark [Rogers, drums] and his wife Sue have a son and a daughter, and Rich [Moore, bass] and his wife Cate have two daughters and a son. Being away from family is by far the most challenging part of touring. Of course, we couldn’t do what we do without everyone’s support back home. But there are times when the balance between home life and travel gets out of whack. We’ve had to learn to say no to things and that isn’t easy when the person on the other end feels called strongly to partner with us in ministry. Overall, as husbands we don’t believe God’s will for us is to sacrifice our relationships for Newworldson.
NWS: Joel [Parisien, vocals and keys] is the one who writes the lyrics. The exception to that formula was the collaboration with our friend Tawgs Salter who co-wrote “There Is A Way.” LS: Tell me about your faith journey. How did you come to Christ? NWS: (Joel answering) For me personally, what convinced me of the truth in the Gospels was the example of His followers and the love they had for one another and for their fellow man. Then when I experienced the presence of the Holy Spirit at a worship conference, that made God all the more real for me. LS: What are your plans and expectations for the future? NWS: In the immediate future, we’re looking forward to getting back to Australia and New Zealand next year. And friends and fans have already begun asking us when the next record is coming so we’d better get to work. We’ve been so busy promoting
LS: Are you all married? How difficult is it to adjust to the absences of traveling and touring?
LS: What would you most like your fans to know about you? NWS: We would definitely want our fans to know we don’t aspire to be celebrities of any kind. We’re just four regular guys that happen to play music and love the Lord. At the end of the day, He’s the most famous person in history for a reason.

MAGNIFY HIM SUBMITTED BY YOU!
A Life Restored >>> A TESTIMONY SHARED BY DAVID DUBIANSKY
O
verflow recently sat down with David who is a 20 year old missionary on his way to England. He candidly shared the transformation of his life as a hurting young boy into a vibrant young man of God. His story is another example of how God’s love can penetrate the heart and lead one to lay down their life for Christ, pick up their cross, and follow Him. “I grew up in a pretty broken home. My mom was an alcoholic and my dad was a workaholic. I went to a Catholic school for elementary and middle school. Growing up, I was that kid that nobody really liked. People would call me [foul names],” David shared. By 13 years old, he had been called so many negative things that he began to believe what people were saying. “I hated myself,” David recalled. “I had terrible self-esteem.” “By the time I reached 13, I quit going to church. The only time I would go is when I was forced to on Christmas and Easter. This is when I started going downhill. I got involved with pornography first. At 14, I started smoking. It was like a progression every year I did something more. When I turned 15 years old I started drinking. It started off pretty casual, nothing crazy, and then eventually it turned into every weekend. It got worse and eventually that wasn’t even enough, so I started smoking marijuana. That became my thing every day,” David explained. One night David and his father arrived home together to find that his mother had tried to commit suicide. David was shaken to the core and continued his destructive lifestyle to try and fill the void of a broken relationship with his mother. Her sickness affected him in so many ways that he didn’t quite know how to deal with it. His mother was admitted into a rehabilitation center and David explained, “That’s when I went off the deep end, when she was in rehab. He went on to share that he was drinking, doing drugs, and smoking frequently. At the time, David didn’t have the best relationship with his father either. “I was a wild child and had no respect. Growing up he was not around much. He was always
busy, so I felt like I was kind of put on the back burner. Now, I recognize that he loved me as best as he knew how,” David said. When tough things were going on with his mom, David explained, “My dad was always there for the family when things would fall apart. When my mom would relapse he would immediately come to me and my sister and ask, ‘Are you guys okay? We’re going to get through this, I promise.’ He would be so caring and loving. The three of us would bond together and keep each other going.” When he was 17 years old, he quit doing drugs and drinking. David realized those things were a waste of time and didn’t fill the void in his heart or the acceptance he so desperately wanted. Life really began to turn around for him during the summer before his senior year when he started working at a coffee shop. His boss was a Christian and one night he told David, “I really don’t know why, but I feel like you’re going to get a lot more out of this than just the job.” God was moving in David’s life before he even realized it. The coffee shop became the hot spot in town. A lot of people would hang out there and they held Friday night concerts. He made a lot of new friends while working there. One new friend in particular was able to show God’s love to David. “He actually cared, and he was genuinely invested in me. And really wanted what was best for me. That meant so much because I had never experienced that before. So for the first time I really felt like somebody cared and I thought it was awesome,” David revealed. Just two weeks later, one of the coffee shop’s regular customers invited David to a youth group at her church. It wasn’t until David started attending the youth group services that he learned who he is in Christ. He met the youth pastor that first night. He got plugged in right away and started attending
every Wednesday and Sunday night. Then, he started attending every Sunday morning as well. “I got my first Bible. I started reading and really diving in and loving it. For once in my life I was happy,” David said. He started seeing himself through God’s eyes instead of what other people had always told him. David said, “I remember when I was 17 years old standing at the altar crying my eyes out in praise and worship and I made God a promise. I said whatever you call me to do, wherever you call me, I will drop what I’m in the middle of doing and I will follow you.” After service one week, David decided to go talk to the youth pastor, and told him, “I think I am called to ministry.” His youth pastor agreed, “You are; I’ve known since the day I met you.” In February of 2008, Generate, a ministry school, visited David’s church to put on a presentation. Pastor John Boore gave the message and David was moved to find out more about the school. He decided to apply to Generate during his second semester of his senior year, after being saved for just four months. “At the time I didn’t know what to

call it, but it was a burden. I felt like I had to do it. Finally I got the call,” David said. He was accepted into the program and moved to Tampa in August 2008. David said that Pastors John and Priscilla met with him consistently and prayed with him to help him overcome the things he struggled with from his past. David shares, “It was within my first year here that [life] was not a struggle anymore. I was so elated and happy. From 13 to 17, I spent four years hating my life and being miserable, and I was finally set free. Thank God.” Moreover, God has since restored the once broken relationship between David and his parents. David learned of a missionary program called the Pais Project in October of 2009, which offers one or three year apprenticeships in youth and school ministries. He went onto their website and as he explained it, “I felt a stir in the spirit. I felt a prompting.” At the time David wanted to be a youth pastor, not a missionary, but a few months later, he was fully convinced that God was calling him to do missionary work. He asked God to lead
20

him toward the right decision. David revealed that God spoke to his heart when he doubted what he should do. “I had my music on and out of nowhere I heard in my head, ‘Turn off the music.’ I turned it off and I said, ‘Okay God, what’s up?’ I heard [God’s] voice that said, ‘Remember the promise.’ I kept hearing that in my head. When I was 17 I made that promise to God saying no matter what I’m doing, if you call me, I will drop what I’m doing and I will follow you.” A couple of weeks after completing his second year of the Generate program, David found out he was accepted into the Pais Project. Their motto is missionaries making missionaries. David explained that he will be on a team of six. They will meet throughout the week and go into the middle and high schools to mentor the students through lunch clubs, teachings, and workshops. Additionally, David and the other Pais missionaries are placed into different churches in their area to be a part of the church’s youth ministry. This enables the missionaries to become familiar faces at the
schools and churches, allowing the students to have an easier transition into church. David is excited about the opportunity and revealed, “My heart is for youth.” David is supported by a church that sponsors him while he is a missionary in England. However, he will need additional financial support while fulfilling God’s call to missionary work. David needs to raise an additional $200-$350 of monthly support for toiletries, clothing, and other necessities. If you would like to support David as a missionary for Christ, please send a check (write “David Dubiansky” on the memo line) or cash (include note stating that the money is for David) to PAIS USA INC, 2131 N. BEHIND THE PULPIT LOCAL PASTOR’S VOICE
A Prosperous Life >>> BY PASTOR JANE McDONNOUGH
H
ow’s your life? Are you experiencing the life that Jesus came to provide? You can! Scripture paints for us a clear picture of the prosperous life. It also contrasts it with that of the cursed life leaving us with a choice. What choice will you make?
“…‘Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans, who rely on human strength and turn their hearts away from the Lord’” (Jeremiah 17:5, NLTse). “But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence” (Jeremiah 17:7, NLTse).
Let’s look in the book of Jeremiah. “But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit” (Jeremiah 17:7-8, NLTse).
We see relying solely on human effort leads to the cursed life while placing our confidence in God brings prosperity. Sounds simple enough, but it goes deeper. When we rely on human strength it is because we have more faith in ourselves than in God. We focus on ourselves and think our success is based on what we do. We need to change our minds. Even religion often gets the cart before the horse and bombards us with teachings about what we should and should not be doing. Scripture teaches the importance of right behavior, but right behavior is not the source of the prosperous life.
Can you picture the prosperous life from this description? It’s a life of stability, growth, and fruitfulness. This person is not bothered by circumstances and has a constant source of nourishment. No matter what happens, they are not worried and they continue to produce fruit. This person’s life is not one of sour grapes or rotten apples, but one of sweet fruit. Have you ever experienced a sweet spot in your life when something you desired came to pass? This is the good life; this is the life of a prosperous person. On the other hand, scripture also gives us a look into the life of the cursed person. “This is what the Lord says: ‘Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans, who rely on human strength and turn their hearts away from the Lord. They are like stunted shrubs in the desert, with no hope for the future. They will live in the barren wilderness, in an uninhabited salty land’” (Jeremiah 17:5-6, NLTse). A cursed life is one in which things simply don’t work out. No matter how hard they work, it doesn’t work for them. They have no hope for the future and are focused on the past. They are pressed down by the circumstances. Life is hard. If something good does happen, it won’t last for long. It seems obvious that all of us would want the prosperous life. Yet many who have accepted Christ are not experiencing this life. We must ask ourselves, “Why aren’t we experiencing this life and how can we?” Let’s look back at the passages in Jeremiah to find out how.
24
OverflowMag.com Sept 2010
So what is the source of the prosperous life? It is confidence in God, but we have to build that confidence. We need to change our focus from what we need to do to who we are in Christ. While right behavior is not the source of the blessed life, our righteous standing with God is. When we focus on what God has done for us through the finished work of Jesus, we will place our confidence in that work and not in our own. It is because of who God has made us to be in Christ that we find the strength to do what we need to do to prosper. Right behavior is the result of who we are. The prosperous person has their roots in Christ and not in their own efforts. The answer to the prosperous life is to build your confidence in who you are in Jesus. Paul makes it clear in Romans 4:5-6 (NLTse) “But people are counted as righteous, not because of their work, but because of their faith in God who forgives sinners. David also spoke of this when he described the happiness of those who are declared righteous without working for it.” Go forward and enjoy the prosperous life because of what Jesus has done for us all! ave you ever ‘waited’ for a phone call that could possibly change your life? Whether it is for an answer to a job interview or that sale that could change everything, what do you do? You treat that phone like a newborn baby. You keep it on you at all times and check it regularly, just in case it quits working. The longer you wait, the more desperate you get. Why do we do this? Obviously, whoever you are waiting for to call is very important to you. The more time that passes, the more important it becomes to you. Why does time play such an important part? Because everything has an expiration date! God is waiting on you to call Him! He sees the expiration date coming fast, but you haven’t called on Him yet. You might have done some things in the past that you are not proud of, but He’s still waiting on you! 2 Peter 3:9 says He’s waiting for YOUR sake. That means He loves you no matter what you have done. The one thing I find so amazing about our God is that He forgives us. You just have to ask. Would you say this prayer out loud in faith and receive Jesus in your life today?
Father God, I come before you in the Name of Jesus. Your Word says, “Whosoever shall call on the Name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21, KJV) and “if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9, NKJV). Father God, I believe your Word is truth and I stand on it now. Please forgive me for all my sins and unrighteousness. Today I make Jesus my Lord and Savior and I believe God raised Him from the dead, and He is seated at the right hand of the Father in Heaven. Father I ask that you fill me with your Holy Spirit to guide and teach me as I walk this earth and grow spiritually (Luke 11:13; Luke 12:12). I thank You for making a place for me in Your Kingdom, please guide me in the direction that will eternally please You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Big Hat, No Cattle
>>> BY JOHN FAULKNER

“Number 243…No Score!” exclaimed the announcer over the PA system. There I was sitting in the clay, more than slightly dazed by my trip down from my fancy horse to the clay ground in the arena. I was numbed by the pain and looked around trying to gather what was left of my senses.
A
s the dust cleared, I realized that I had run out of talent before my horse did and the ground was a lot harder than it looked from the saddle. My formerly white shirt was covered with red clay and my $500 Stetson cowboy hat laid top down in the dirt 30 feet away from me. My shiny, dinner plate belt buckle was now embedded into my midsection and my right monogrammed spur had cut through my left boot. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a

rider on horseback trotting over towards me. As the well-broke horse calmly stopped, the cowboy effortlessly stepped off and reached down to pick up my hat. He walked over to me, handed me my hat and said, “Here you go, Cowboy!” As I stood up and brushed the dust off of me, I made the following observations: his hat was old, weathered, and had a hole in it; he had a rope for a belt; his spurs were held onto his boots by baling wire; his
“But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.” 2 Corinthians 4:7 (NIV) boots were so dusty that I couldn’t tell you what color they were; and most importantly, his horse couldn’t have cost more than $300. This was the real cowboy that picked up the wannabes from the arena floor. Talk about a lesson in humility. If I could have read his mind, he was probably thinking, “Big Hat, No Cattle.” This Texan expression describes someone that is strong in appearances, but weak in substance. Yep - that described me perfectly! Sadly, today many people look at Christian businesses a lot like that old cowboy looked at me. They see all the bells and whistles that call attention to our faith, but don’t experience the things of substance that really mean the most. As Christians, we sometimes get caught up in what we look like instead of what we are. Or even worse, we work on what we want to look like instead of realizing what we already are in Jesus Christ. What may start out as a charitable opportunity to proclaim the goodness of God can quickly turn into self promotion. From a personal point of view, this is the part of business that I struggle with the most. What are my true motives? Is it faithfulness to God’s will or is it positioning myself or my business in a better light in order to reap some kind of earthly gain? Am I showing off when God just wants me to show up? A common buzz phrase in today’s business world is “perception is everything.” While there may be some truth to that statement as far as the world is concerned, the God that we serve isn’t fooled by perception. He sees straight through to our hearts. He cares much more about the person than the fish on their business card. God created us to fulfill a purpose that He prepared for us in advance and that purpose will always trump the few lines of a mission statement.
The apostle Paul compared us to a jar of clay in his second letter to the church at Corinth. “But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us” (2 Corinthians 4:7, NIV). His point was that the power of God can show up in the most humble of places. Right here, right now - in you and me. No fixing up, tweaking the P & L (profit and loss), or organizing the files needed. This should bring comfort to the many business owners out there who, while still standing, are just a fraction of what they once were. God can not only show up in the fraction that is left, but also position you to do more to serve the Kingdom than ever before. Let me explain. When your business is firing on all cylinders you have a lot of opportunities to participate in several causes. This requires more of your resources, but brings more attention. Sometimes these opportunities become more of an obligation than an offering. While many great causes are still served, regardless of the intent, we often leapfrog over the small unseen ministry opportunities that are right in front of us. Employees, customers, and vendors are a great place to start. Yes, crystal vases sure are beautiful and I can appreciate their value. However, they shatter easily and once they’re cracked, they become useless. Jars of clay are practical and useful - even if cracked. The potter can fix the jar and use it over and over. Trust and credibility are the by-products of consistency and practicality. We become more approachable when we aren’t afraid to show the cracks. When God looks at me, I want Him to see a practical and useful jar of clay and for Him to say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” If He sees a beautiful and valuable crystal vase with nothing in it, He might just say, “Big Hat, No Cattle.”

Is Jesus Your Lord? >>> BY CHRIS CHERP
W
ebster’s dictionary defines Lord as “one having power and authority over others; a ruler by hereditary right or preeminence to whom service and obedience are due.”1 Does Jesus have power and authority over your life? Do you give the service and obedience that are due to your Lord Jesus Christ? Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior, but too often we emphasize His role as Savior but disregard His Lordship. As Christ’s return draws near, Believers must awaken to the importance of submission to our Lord. For many years I thought because I attended church every Sunday and sometimes on Wednesday, I was a very good Christian. Then one day I got my toes stepped on as I learned that in order to mature and fully please God as Believers, we need to submit to the Lordship we’re under. Too many times God and His plans did not fit into my schedule or in what I thought I should be doing for Him, even though I heard Him
32
OverflowMag.com Sept 2010
clearly. Fortunately, I made the choice to change that attitude and become obedient to my Lord Jesus Christ. He’s calling out to you, do you hear Him?
Every Believer At some point in every Believer’s life the decision was made to ask for forgiveness and repent of our ways and place our faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Many times the people making this commitment are at the lowest point in some area of their lives. Immediately the new Believer is saved! Now what? The responsibility of the Believer at this point is to begin learning more about Jesus Christ through reading the Bible, meditating on His Word, and sitting under the teaching of men and women of God. When we spend quality time with Jesus we form an intimate relationship with Him.
As we do this, God’s grace begins to increase in our lives. “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen” (2 Peter 3:18, NRSV). As this grace continues to increase in our lives, we are to use it for the glory of God through obedience.
What’s My Purpose? What is the Lord calling me to do? For a long time I would ask God what my purpose was in this life. I almost got to the point of frustration until I began spending time alone reading the Bible. I started reading the New Testament so I could learn more about Jesus’ time here on earth. As I ventured in my readings, I discovered that God’s will for us is written right in the Bible. To gain this knowledge, I found that all I had to do was ask God for understanding while I read the Bible.
It was during this time that I spent with the Lord that I realized His will for all mankind is to preach the Gospel to everyone. “…Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15, NKJV). That’s when I realized why God freely gives us His grace.
Benefits
The Great Commission
When we become more selfless and yield to God’s voice within us, we grow in humility. When we do, God increases us with His grace and the benefits are unlimited. With humility comes the wisdom to clearly see the gifts from God. “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom” (Proverbs 11:2, NIV).
“And He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature’” (Mark 16:15, NKJV). This is no easy task. If we’re not walking in God’s grace and we try to minister to someone, then we may talk ourselves out of it before we even try or it will just turn into a debate. This results in disobedience and lost opportunity.
Grace
Just the opposite is true for the proud; they think all their success is because of themselves. They don’t recognize the goodness of God nor do they ever heed His direction. This thinking leads to destruction every time. “Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18, NKJV).
Look at Peter before Jesus rose from the dead. Peter, being the boldest of the disciples, was the one who prior to Jesus being beaten and humiliated swore he would follow Jesus even if it meant death. “Peter said, ‘Lord, I am ready to go to prison with you, and even to die with you’” (Luke 22:33, NLT). However, Peter ended up denying Jesus three times because he wasn’t walking in God’s grace at the time. After the day of Pentecost, Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit and God’s grace abounded through him. Because of this, Peter was able to minister to the men in Judea (who even spoke many different languages), thus leading three thousand to salvation through Jesus Christ (see Acts 2).
We are all born with a gift of grace from God. An example would be the ability to breathe and speak at the same time. When we receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior we receive another portion of grace from God. “But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift” (Ephesians 4:7, NKJV). As we grow in faith and humility, the exceeding grace of God continues to abound toward us. “But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: ‘God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble’” (James 4:6, NKJV). Consequently, through obedience we can successfully complete the tasks the Lord has predestined for us to fulfill, not by our strength or ability but through His grace. “And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work” (2 Corinthians 9:8, NIV).
By submitting to God we are able to fulfill the desires of our hearts through His grace, which is the best benefit of all. However, the main reason we all have God’s grace is to bring Him glory. When brothers and sisters in Christ work together to bring glory to God, the measures of grace given to each Believer are combined yielding supernatural results and sweet gratification. When we operate in our God-given graces we are able to minister to others by helping those in need and simply living our lives joyfully to the fullest. This opens opportunities in our sphere of influence to share the goodness of our Lord Jesus Christ and why we have such joy. Due to the time spent in God’s Word, we will be well prepared to answer or at least know where to the find the answers to the questions asked (1 Peter 3:15).
“...‘Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature.’” Mark 16:15 (NKJV)
All Believers are commissioned to preach the Gospel to every creature. This means you and I were specially made for this purpose. At first thought, it seems uncomfortable and almost impossible. However through our obedience to the Lord’s calling in our lives and His grace that abounds toward us, we can one day hear, “…Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your Lord” (Matthew 25:21, NKJV). It is our obligation to the Lord Jesus Christ to be obedient and trust in His Word. Now I encourage you to seek His voice, call on His grace, make disciples of all nations, and remember Jesus is Lord. Glory! www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/lord

Voice for the Orphans
>>> BY VERONICA BROCATO
M
any times while rocking my beautiful ten month-old gently to sleep on my chest, the thoughts of all the children who are alone in the world begin to weigh heavily on my heart. This may seem to be an odd thing to think about while holding my baby, but it is a reality for millions of children across the world. Please understand, this is not only in third world countries, but also right here in the United States. Today there are over 500,000 children in the foster care system and 130,000 of those children are available for adoption today (National Adoption Information Clearinghouse). Worldwide, “every 18 seconds another child becomes an orphan.”1 These statistics, and many others like these, have broken my heart and become the

mission of the new ministry Voice for the Orphans. Injustice of any kind gets me angry, but somehow it moves me even more when these injustices are happening to those who are unable to speak for themselves. Orphans are among those who need someone to speak for them, to tell their story. Every child deserves the type of protection, unconditional love, affection, encouragement, and hope which come from being part of a family. We see God’s heart on this as He says to the orphans that He will not leave them alone. He will come to them as a “father to the fatherless” (Psalm 68:5). “God sets the lonely in families…” (Psalm 68:6, NIV). How do you suppose God intended to set the lonely in families? He planned to accomplish this through you and me. “If only 7% of the 2 billion Christians in the world would show
hope to a single orphan, looking after the child in their distress, there would effectively be no more orphans.”1 God has chosen to work through us to help the hurting, broken, and defenseless. Steven Curtis Chapman—singer, songwriter, and founder of Show Hope—states, “If it is important to God, it should be important to His people, and orphans clearly matter to God. Though He calls us to specifically care for orphans and the fatherless, it is so easy for the plight of these children to become buried under the cares of life and lost in the midst of our own worries and concerns.” James 1:27 (NLT) tells us, “Pure and lasting religion in the sight of God our Father means that we must care for orphans and widows in their troubles….” Government programs, though well-meaning, are not the answer. It is
clear through scripture that God intended for Believers to be the answer to this epidemic. In 1 John 3:18 (NIV) we read, “Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.” In other words, don’t just talk about doing something or just discuss how bad things are. Choose to DO something. Choose to take action. Let us ask ourselves, “What can I do to make a difference in the life of an orphan?” As Joyce Meyer quotes Edward Everett Hale in her book, Love Revolution, “I am only one, but still I am one, I cannot do everything, but I can do something and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something I can do.” And the more well-known quote of Edmund Burke states, “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Where there is no opposition to evil, it is the same as agreeing with it. It not only allows the evil to continue, it allows it to multiply. Every one of us can do something.
There are many creative ways in which you can help to improve the life of an orphan. Prayerfully consider what the Lord wants you to do. Here are five ways to help:
1. Pray – Let us not underestimate the power of prayer in bringing families together. My daughters and I pray along the lines of Psalm 10:14-18. “Lord, surely you see these cruel and evil things; look at them and do something. People in trouble look to You for help. You are the One who helps the orphans” (Psalm 10:14, NCV). “Protect the orphans and put an end to suffering so they will no longer be afraid of evil people” (Psalm 10:18, NCV). When we pray this, I believe God hears us and answers these prayers. 2. Get involved – Voice for the Orphans is a new ministry based in Wesley Chapel, FL and is looking for volunteers to help get the word out about orphans. We can use your creativity in the area of web design and
videography, prayer commitment, small business organization, and time in going to churches or places of business. We even need those who enjoy research. Whatever your talents, the Voice for the Orphans team can use you!
3. Give – Although there are many ministries which deal specifically with orphans, I highly recommend two that you can sow into: Show Hope (www.showhope.org) and Watoto (www.watoto.com). Please take time to visit these websites and familiarize yourself with both of their visions.
4. Foster – Pastors Ricky and Joni Franklin from Roanoke, TX had this to say about fostering: “Having been blessed with five of our own wonderful children, in the summer of 2008 we became foster parents. It has not been easy, but it is amazing to watch God work in their lives and ours. We have seen God heal burned feet, shrink tumors, heal wounded souls, and increase these little ones’ knowledge of the love of their Father God….”
5. Adopt – From the heart of a ten year-old
“Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.”
1 John 3:18 (NIV)
boy in the foster care system to his case worker as families came in to meet the children: “Go ahead and adopt out my baby brothers, I don’t want them to suffer because of me. No one wants kids my age.” This young boy was adopted, as well as his two younger brothers. They were able to stay together, and three more brothers followed. The mom who adopted these six boys gives this encouragement, “Love is a sacrifice, it is not selfish, and adoption is not about what we want, but what they need.” The truth is God has called us to show the world we are followers of Christ by our LOVE, nothing else. Please allow God to move in your heart and lead you on what you can do to be an answer for an orphan. Becoming part of the Voice for the Orphans team is a great place to start. We are looking for committed volunteers to help this new ministry get off the ground. RESOURCES FOR YOUR SPIRIT
Proverbs 18:15 (NKJV)
“The heart of the prudent acquires knowledge, And the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.” It is vital to our spirituality that we continually renew our minds with the Word of God and meditate on His Word. Our Bibles are the most important resource we have to accomplish spiritual growth; however, we do believe in the importance of feeding our spirits with edifying books, sermons, and music that will build us up and keep Jesus Christ at the forefronts of our daily lives. Each month we will share impactful books, movies, CDs, and even websites that are inspirational and foster stronger relationships with our Father.
Protecting Your Family In Dangerous Times
Kellie Copeland Swisher “During these dangerous and uncertain times, it’s easy to find ourselves feeling afraid. And there is nothing the enemy enjoys more than seeing God’s people live in fear. But we don’t need to be afraid! God knows what lies ahead in these last days, and He has everything we need to see us through to victory. We are at war with the enemy like never before. Like all the other promises of God, we must exercise our faith in order to walk in the fullness of His protection. Now is the time to stand firm on God’s Word and start protecting your family today!”

Surrendering the Secret Healing the Heartbreak of Abortion
Pat Layton
“Without question, abortion can be one of the most traumatic experiences in a person’s life. Research indicates that more than 40% of women of child-bearing age have experienced its pain. Many women hide the secret of abortion and suffer severe consequences. They carry incredible burdens while wearing smiles on their faces.” This “is a powerful study that helps hurting women find the path to healing through honest, interactive Bible study; meaningful group exercise; and unique journaling exercises.”

MY ROCK
SCRIPTURES I STAND ON
James 1:5 (NIV) “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.” As a college student I eagerly seek to gain new knowledge that I can apply to my life and future career. As a Believer of Christ, I find peace knowing that I can open God’s Word and call upon Him for true guidance and wisdom, regardless of what chapter of life I am in. This scripture is a constant reminder that I can always rely on the Lord to guide me through any crossroad in my life.
Genesis 1:1 (NKJV) “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” I like this verse because I learned it in my Edge Kids’ class. It is about God. (age 4)
MY ROCK
SCRIPTURES I STAND ON
Matthew 6:28-30 (KJV) “…Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, shall He not much more clothe you....” These statements made by Jesus fill me with peace, wonder, and excitement. When I think of this scripture, it’s like Jesus is reminding me of how important I am to Him. Sometimes I see my life as muddy water, dirt, and an irritating husk. God sees a worthy beautiful flower ready to emerge. All I have to do is let His light shine on me.
