Psalm 61:2 (NKJV)
“...When my heart is overwhelmed; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”
You Have Not Because You Ask Not In the last few weeks, I was wavering over a business decision. Should I cease or should I progress in that direction? I struggled with this for a while until one Sunday morning. As I was getting ready to go to church, I asked the Lord (out loud) if He wanted me to continue in the direction I was heading. About ten minutes before the end of the church service, the pastor began saying, “For those of you who are questioning whether to quit or press forward, the Lord is telling you to press forward!” The pastor actually said not to quit two more times. As goose bumps formed on my arms, I realized I was smiling. The Lord heard my question that morning and was very clear on His answer. It’s a great feeling to know that Jesus loves me so much that He will give me wise counsel whenever I ask. Praise Jesus! >>> PC, Wesley Chapel
God’s Amazing Love Recently, I have been going through what some people would consider financial hell. I would ask God for help, then shortly after, I would pick the burden back up and begin worrying and thinking about what I needed to do to fix it. After sitting under some amazing teachings about the true love of God, I have finally been able to release the burden and leave it at God’s feet. Within hours of doing that, things began to change in my favor. Praise King Jesus. He came that we might have life and have it more abundantly (John 10:10). That’s exactly what’s happening in my life right now. Thank you, Jesus! >>> Anonymous, Tampa
You Can Always Run to the Lord! In November, I was able to visit someone I did not know to supply a Thanksgiving meal. The Christian sister I visited wanted to pray and have someone to talk to. She was not going to church. She had attempted to take her own life some two years prior. While sitting in the hospital, she realized her mistake. The loss of a child brought her to deep despair. The enemy used these feelings to convince her that she had nothing to live for and she did not deserve God’s forgiveness for what she tried to do to herself. All she needed to hear was what she already knew: “We are saved by GRACE!” I thank God I set aside my personal fears about how to minister to someone and just trusted the Lord to guide my words and actions. I continue to learn that being led by the Holy Spirit can open up doors to help someone in need, even if it’s only to remind someone they are loved and God’s arms are always open for us - His children. We can always run to the Lord when we make a mistake. I thanked the sister for allowing me to worship my God by sowing the seed of love into her life. It was an experience I will never forget. The Lord reinforced in my spirit to be open to His Leading; you may be a blessing or be blessed in your journey. Praise God! Thank you Jesus for the opportunity to serve You. >>> Marc, Lakewood Church
Visit OverflowMag.com to SUBMIT your God Story and tell our community what He has done in your life. God Concealed Me in HIS Tabernacle On the morning of November 17, 2010 while seeking God, He led me to read Psalm 27. I read it and meditated on verses 1-3 and 5, which read: “The LORD is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the defense of my life; Whom shall I dread? When evildoers came upon me to devour my flesh, My adversaries and my enemies, they stumbled and fell. Though a host encamp against me, My heart will not fear; Though war arise against me, In spite of this I shall be confident” (Psalm 27:1-3, NASB). “For in the day of trouble He will conceal me in His tabernacle; In the secret place of His tent He will hide me; He will lift me up on a rock” (Psalm 27:5, NASB). That afternoon, I received a call from my daughter because the bus had left her behind and I had to pick her up from school. She was very upset and I tried to explain to her that it was okay. Upon picking her up from school, she was still upset and again I told her, “Thank God I was home to pick you up. Life is so short and it could change in a heartbeat.” I reminded her not to allow the inconvenience to take control of her thoughts and the rest of her day. We stopped at a couple local stores, a fast food restaurant, and the bank. Unbeknownst to us we were in the vicinity of a CVS robbery and our car would become the final getaway vehicle for the perpetrators. I parked my vehicle in front of the bank while my daughter entered to make a deposit. I normally lock my doors, but this time it just slipped my mind. While I was waiting, a man entered my vehicle through the passenger side of the car. He pointed what appeared to be a 9 mm at my face and demanded that I get out of the car. He yelled “get out of the car” several times and stated it was a “carjacking.” I stared at him thinking, “Are you kidding me; are you really asking me to get out of my car? Is that gun real? This can’t be real?” It took awhile for this event to register in my mind and in the process, the carjacker continued to yell at me to “get out of the car” with his gun pointed in my face. Finally, I thought “he is not kidding and my daughter who is in the bank may come out at any minute.” I decided to get out of the car. During this ordeal, at no time did fear enter my mind. I strongly believe the Scripture I read that morning was keeping me “concealed in His tabernacle.” God “lifted me up on a rock.” I entered the bank and yelled, “Help, they just stole my car.” When I turned around the car was flying out of the parking spot. I went to the teller counter and began to pray out loud. I prayed that the perpetrators would be apprehended and that
God would place a protection over me and my daughter. At the end of the prayer several of the tellers joined in and said, “Amen!” A reporter approached me and asked, “How did you feel that two other women had been pistol-whipped by the robbers and you obviously escaped unharmed?” I told her I was unaware people were hurt and I believe I was unharmed because “Jesus was in the car with me.” It was obvious to me and everyone who heard the story that it was a miracle those guys did not lay a hand on me. Glory to God! I thank God because my daughter was not inside the vehicle at the time of the incident and I was allowed to leave the vehicle unharmed. Even though my pocketbook was stolen along with both our cell phones, it happened at a location with access to telephones, faxes, water, a ladies’ room, and great people working at the bank. My Jesus protected me and I am a sounding board for HIS GLORY. God can do anything and He protects us from harm. It’s amazing to me how many people heard and saw the video clip on the news and said,” Judy, you were so calm!” All I can humbly say is that “God concealed me in His tabernacle!” I’ve been singing praises to the Lord ever since that day. God has given me the opportunity to glorify His name. Thank You Jesus. >>> Judy, Branch of Christ Ministries

FOLLOWING HIM How four Brandon women took a leap of faith to open Ambiance.
>>>BY AMANDA WRIGHT
Jesus said, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:27 (NIV)
T
he Ambiance team consists of four women who love the Lord, their families, and the community in which they reside. They strive to dedicate a portion of their time and talent to help those in need. Anne Nymark, co-owner of Ambiance, said “Our love for others comes from God’s love.” Loving others is exactly what Jesus teaches in the Gospels. “…‘Love your neighbor as yourself’” (Matthew 22:39, NIV). These hard-working women embody this Scripture in all that they do. They demonstrate how a person can effectively lead a balanced life, while actively participating in causes that are “near and dear to their hearts.” God has honored the love and help they have given others. The successful opening of Ambiance on October 1, 2010 is one of the many blessings God has given Anne, Juliet, Liz, and Jodi for their continued obedience in living out His plan.
Meet the Team Liz Brewer has been in the mortgage business for 24 years, which is very different from her true passion of event planning. For the last 10 years she has volunteered and helped coordinate events for her church and various organizations. Liz shared, “God had me in training all these years…. God takes ordinary people and He does extraordinary things through us if we allow Him.” She is very involved with her community through the Greater Brandon Community Foundation (aka Brandon Foundation), the Brandon Chamber of Commerce, American Cancer Society, the Women’s Resource Center, and her children’s schools. Jodi Chadwell earned her interior design degree in 1990, and after her three children started attending school, she returned to her passion for design. Jodi’s husband
is a home builder (Chadwell Homes), and she has assisted many of the clients in the material selection process. “A lot of the clients wanted me to decorate their houses after doing the selections with them and [my business, Designing Spaces] grew from there.” Her design business has been referral based for the last eight years. She was nominated for small business of the year by the Brandon Chamber of Commerce and served on the building committee for Bell Shoals Baptist Church’s major three-year renovation. Jodi is also involved with her community through the Brandon Foundation, LifeCare, American Cancer Society, and Leadership Brandon. Juliet Wilks began her career in floral design in 1981 where she worked alongside a florist and learned how to design. From 1992-2004, she owned and operated her own store, Juliet’s Flowers. Juliet tried other career fields, but explained that floral design has always been where her heart is. She began working for another florist and was introduced to Anne. She is also an active volunteer for the Brandon Foundation. Anne Nymark, like Liz, has a background in business. She has been the president of a successful accounting and tax firm, Professional Accounting and Consulting Services, for 28 years. Liz lovingly referred to Anne as, “Ms. Brandon,” because she is extremely involved in the Brandon community. Anne co-founded the Brandon Foundation over seven years ago. Anne explained, “The Brandon Foundation supports 54 registered charitable organizations and over 175 families.… I know in my own life, in order to feel whole and fulfilled, I need God, family, my business, and community involvement.” (To learn more visit: www.BrandonFoundation.com.)
God’s Path These women have known each other for several years through church and volunteering for the Brandon Foundation. “We bonded working alongside each other,” shared Anne. The Lord helped each of them to recognize the talents and abilities in themselves and one another. Anne explained that she was not looking for another business venture, but she trusted and believed in Liz, Jodi, and Juliet. Anne began talking with Juliet

about opening a flower shop, while Jodi and Liz discussed their desire to start an event planning business to help nonprofits. Despite different backgrounds, their “core values are closely related.” The Lord placed a yearning in each of their hearts to open a business together and incorporate all of their God-given talents. God began opening doors. They found the perfect retail space at the charming Winthrop Town Centre in Riverview for reasonable lease rates. After talking it over with their husbands and through a lot of prayer, the women decided to take the leap of faith and open up shop. Juliet said, “It was like it was meant to be. It was very natural.” Liz added, “[Through] little things [the Lord] kept directing us,” and Jodi responded, “The fact that we can all share the overhead and we all have the synergy to work together just made sense.” Some people questioned why they would open a business in this economy, but as believers, we know that God’s economy is separate from that of the world’s. These women know that God led them to open Ambiance, and they believe He will help them make their businesses successful. There is no need for doubt or fear when you follow God’s path.
Ambiance Ambiance is the melding of three business entities and as they put it, “One shop for
all your floral, design, and event planning needs.” Jodi came up with the name “Ambiance,” which fit perfectly into their respective professions. Juliet explained, “We wanted our name to express what we are really doing [for our clients].” Each of their talents allows them to create a unique atmosphere specially designed to evoke a specific mood or feeling. “Anne is our business-minded person,” Liz shared. “Even though she is not the silent partner, she’s the one behind the scenes who keeps us focused on the bigger picture, but also makes sure the business pieces are covered as well.” Anne and Juliet are coowners of Ambiance Floral Designs, a fullservice florist for any occasion, including weddings and other special events. They deliver in all of Hillsborough County. You can stop in to meet with Juliet for your next event, or visit their website to order fresh flowers for any special occasion (www.AmbianceFloral.net). Jodi operates Ambiance Design Boutique. When you enter the store, you are greeted with a beautiful décor of unique home goods and a welcoming atmosphere. Jodi decorates the store with items from vendors that she knows and trusts, and all these items are for sale. She also offers design services for homes, offices, and events, including the
selection of furniture, accessories, drapery, lighting, linens, and more. When working with clients, “I’m really looking at their functionality, budget, and creative style so they get what they want” said Jodi. The store acts as a showcase to potential clients of how their home can look and feel. Jodi’s ultimate goal is to create the perfect ambiance within the home, office, or event that reflects the person or organization. Jodi shared this wonderful Scripture, which depicts what she hopes to accomplish in her work and what she shares with those who she teaches to decorate: Isaiah 32:18 (NIV) “My people will live in peaceful dwelling-places, in secure homes, in undisturbed places of rest.” Ambiance Events & Promotions is owned by Liz and, with her years of experience doing events, she has made numerous connections in the community. She is able to guide you through the event planning process and direct you to the best resources for your specific event. The Ambiance team can assist with galas, fundraisers, community events, real estate open houses, grand openings, corporate events, and - of course - weddings. Ambiance offers their services to nonprofits at a reduced rate. Liz shared, “That is where I’d like to focus my energies as I grow my event planning business. My goal is to help ministries raise money and [seek out] sponsors and allow them to do what they do best… run the ministry.”

ANNE NYMARK FLORAL / BUSINESS Services: Co-owner of Ambiance Floral Designs, Anne also owns Professional Accounting and Consulting Services specializing in accounting and tax preparations.
Liz said, “Visually these women [Juliet and Jodi] are the creative side of [the business]. I focus more on the details of putting together an event. So we make a great team utilizing the skills of each other.” Liz, Jodi, and Juliet use the store front for consultations and planning. The women promote one another through their daily interactions with clients and customers, and they can uniquely offer the talents and resources of a prominent business woman, florist, designer, and event planner. It is a one-stop shop!
Keeping Him at the Heart of it All These accomplished women endeavor to keep God at the forefronts of their lives,
possibly be successful on my own and I draw guidance and strength from the Lord.” Liz stated, “I have to make a conscious decision to grow [the business] slowly.… This is my second business, so I learned many years ago that to be successful I had to make time for each of [those] areas on a daily basis.”
both personally and professionally. Jodi incorporates Christian, faith-based products in the boutique. Juliet shared that they all prayed together before the business opened. The prayer (led by a friend): “God, each person who walks through the door, show us how we can enrich their lives and do something good for them through Christ. Anybody that comes in, we want to extend ourselves in that manner.” Liz added that they integrate Christ in their daily lives and in their interactions with people. “Any chance we have, we try to share God in some way,” she said. “It’s interwoven in what we say, because it’s a part of the fabric [we’re made of].” What are these intriguing women’s favorite Scriptures? Anne explained that her favorite Scripture is 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, which is the great Love Chapter. She added, “With love anything can be accomplished according to God’s will.” Anne’s love for others is quite obvious to all who know her, through her endless work in the community and the way she encourages those around her. Juliet remarked, “We would not be what we are today without Anne Nymark in our lives.” Jodi stands on Psalm 18:2 (NKJV), “The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my
stronghold.” Liz shared that her inspirational Scripture is Jeremiah 29:11 and said, “I don’t worry about tomorrow because I know that He already has plans, not to harm me, but to give me hope and a future.” Juliet’s favorite verse is Psalm 103:17 (NKJV), “But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting On those who fear Him, And His righteousness to children’s children.” These verses give insight into the hearts of these special women and partly explain their confident decision to follow God’s leading by going into business together, making it apparent that God is at the heart of it all.
Wise Guidance Opening a new business can be tough no matter the circumstances. Each of the women contemplated the hardest part about being business owners. Liz shared, “Time management. It’s easy to get caught up in the newness of the business and allow it to consume my time when I still have to keep my relationship with God and my family first.” Jodi explained, “The hardest part is balancing the projects for my clients, having set hours at Ambiance, and making time for my family.” Balance in life is a typical goal for most people. How do these women effectively balance business, church, community, and family? Jodi responded, “I know I couldn’t
Each woman said there are mistakes that can cause failure for a new business, one of which Jodi said was the inability to be flexible. “There are many aspects of the business that I have already changed and we have only been open three months!” Liz shared another potential cause of failure: “Not praying about starting the business first.” Approaching God in prayer about the decisions you make in business is vitally important. Anne stated, “Prayer is simply talking with God about each step we take.” Liz went on to say that failure can certainly come in her industry by taking on too many projects at once, so it’s important to keep God involved in every aspect of the decisionmaking process. Liz also explained that before a person can achieve success, they need to understand what it means to them. She said, “For me, having a business that provides financially, but still gives me the freedom to be a wife, a mom, and serve the Lord in ministry is success.” Jodi added, “To achieve success, you need to keep God in the driver’s seat of your business.” These ladies shared some additional advice for people ready to make the leap into business ownership. “Follow your heart…” Juliet said, as she explained that sometimes it is not common sense where God is leading you. God will lead you by your heart. Jodi responded, “Pray for guidance daily. Make sure the desires of [your] heart match with His and … [you’re] not trying to get ahead of Him.” Anne shared, “First, ask God’s opinion, then build your management team.… Have a business plan [with] three months’ working capital.” And lastly, Liz said, “Pray and seek His face, because if it isn’t God, it will not succeed.” Ultimately, God will never lead you astray if you simply follow Him. SALVATION
M
any people think that because of how they have lived their lives and the things they’ve done in the past, God cannot possibly love them. John 3:16-17 shows just how pure and glorious God’s love is for His creation. He gave the world His only beloved Son to save us. Love in this Scripture is the Greek word agapao, which translates to unconditional love; a love by choice. God chose to love each of us unconditionally. He wants us to let go of our past and wipe away the feelings of condemnation. Jesus was sacrificed to cleanse us of all our sins. God sent Jesus to give us true, eternal life and to be an example of how we can walk in the God-kind of love throughout our lives. Will you acknowledge God’s love for you and accept Jesus Christ into your heart? Say this prayer aloud: Father God, I come before you in the Name of Jesus. Your Word says, “Whosoever shall call on the Name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21, KJV) and “if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9, NKJV). Father God, I believe your Word is truth and I stand on it now. Please forgive me for all my sins and unrighteousness. Today I make Jesus my Lord and Savior and I believe God raised Him from the dead, and He is seated at the right hand of the Father in Heaven. Father I ask that you fill me with your Holy Spirit to guide and teach me as I walk this earth and grow spiritually (Luke 11:13; Luke 12:12). I thank You for making a place for me in Your Kingdom, please guide me in the direction that will eternally please You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
JOHN 3:16-17 (NKJV) “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

t the age of 22, after being a stay-at-home mom for my children (ages three and four), my former husband abandoned our family, leaving me with no job and hardly any money. As a result, I was evicted from the home that we had rented for a year. I found a job, but the low wages and welfare I received were simply not enough to keep us afloat. With nowhere to go and no child support, I found myself in a very desperate situation. I drove around my small town for a few hours trying to decide what to do, as I knew that I had no idea where my children and I were going to sleep that night. I drove to a pay phone and just began calling apartment complexes located in Tampa, a city I knew nothing about. I had almost given up as I realized that all the apartments were much more expensive than the $350 that I received along with food stamps each month from the State.
attended and served in a local church where I eventually met my husband. Even though I was happily living my new life that the Lord had so graciously blessed me with, I still never forgot the woman who helped me. I told the Lord I wanted to repay her some day for what she had done for us.
The last number I called was answered by a woman, and she explained that I would need to pay the first and last months’ rent along with a deposit. Once again I felt the feeling of desperation rise up within me as I knew it was simply too much money. I thanked her and explained that I could not afford the amount as my monthly check from the State was simply not enough. I was about to hang up when she said, “Wait, did you say you had two babies?” I replied, “Yes, I do.” What came next shocked me; she said, “If you bring me the check, I will allow you to move in today and I will cover the rest.” I hung up and called back because I was shocked that a total stranger would be willing to help me when my own family had abandoned me. With my children, I rushed to the apartment an hour away. She allowed us to move in along with all of our possessions, which amounted to a garbage bag of clothes, one twin bed, a frying pan, a bowl, two plates, and two plastic glasses.
About a week later, I was called from my room to the foyer to meet the grandmother. After introductions, we made small talk and I asked her where she worked and what she did. She said, “I am an apartment manager here in town.” As she said that she gasped, “You are the girl that I helped five years ago!” We both started to cry. We hugged each other and began to praise the Lord out loud and shared our unbelievable story with the other teachers that were standing there. Everyone was amazed—they knew this had to be God. My family had a wonderful time with the twins that weekend, and it gave the grandparents the break that they needed.
One afternoon, during a staff meeting at the childcare facility where I worked, a teacher mentioned that two little twin girls in her class were being raised by their grandparents. The grandmother had inquired if any of the teachers at the center would be willing to take the girls for a weekend and provide them with some much needed rest. I volunteered to take care of the girls and was told that within the next week or so I would be able to meet the grandmother.
“I am very thankful to my Savior for allowing us to meet again and for giving me the opportunity to ‘repay’ this angel that He had sent at the exact time that I needed her. The Lord loves and cares for us, even in the smallest details of our lives.”
I was totally amazed that the Lord would do such an awesome thing just for me! I am very thankful to my Savior for allowing us to meet again and for giving me the opportunity to “repay” this angel that He had sent at the exact time that I needed her. The Lord loves and cares for us, even in the smallest details of our lives.
Over the next five years the Lord blessed me and led me step by step as I rededicated my life wholly to Him. I

HEALTHY LIFE
Benefits of Walking >>> BY CASIO JONES
R
esearch has shown that walking is one of the best forms of exercise we can do. While walking, the body enjoys an increased expenditure of energy and introduction of oxygen to every cell. Walking is also a weight-bearing exercise that helps strengthen bones and improves posture. With minimal requirements, walking is simple and free. You don’t need to be fit or an athlete to gain from this exercise.
10 BENEFITS OF WALKING
There are great and lasting benefits to spiritual walking as well. God has a desire to walk with His perfect creation. This is shown to us in Genesis 3:8 (NKJV): “And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day....” Prior to the fall of man, God walked and talked face to face with Adam and Eve because He loved and enjoyed the fellowship with them. Due to sin, man was separated from God. However, when we make Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, we are brought into relationship with God. Then, we too can walk with Him. In John 8:12 (NIV), Jesus tells us, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” So as you strive toward becoming healthier this year, may our Father in Heaven continue to guide and direct your path. Never forget that God loves you and that your life has a purpose. Physically walking 30-45 minutes each day will improve your health and increase your lifespan; however, walking with God provides benefits that will last for eternity.

Are You on the Devil’s Menu? >>> BY CHRIS CHERP
C
an you believe she said that to me? Who does she think she is? I wish I would have said X@%! to him when he insulted me in the meeting. Have you ever heard words like these used before? Maybe you have even said similar things. Recently, I received revelation on words like these and the attitude behind them that changed the way I respond to offense. Let me explain. Mark 6:11 (NKJV) says, “And whoever will not receive you nor hear you, when you depart from there, shake off the dust under your feet as a testimony against them....” The Lord tells us in this Scripture to dust off our feet when we are not accepted or, in other words, when we’re offended. In John 13, Jesus even cleaned the disciple’s feet, but why? What’s the big deal about dust on our feet? Before we get to that, let me point out in Hebrews 9:13-14 we are told that “the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer” temporarily purifies the flesh from sins, so how much more does the precious blood of Jesus cleanse us? Once we receive Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we are washed in His blood, making us clean - for eternity. Yes, our sins are forgiven - yesterday, today, and forever. Praise Jesus! In John 13:10 Jesus explains that once we have been washed (in the Redemptive Blood) we are forever clean, and the only part that will need washing is our feet. Why do our feet need to be cleaned? ...The dust.

In 1 Peter 5:8 the Word says, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour” (NKJV, emphasis added). There are two words in this Scripture I want to point out: “like” and “may.” The enemy tries to impersonate our Savior, “The Lion of Judah.” Through his roaring, the devil tries to make us believe that God is mad at us for our sins, thus condemning us. The devil is powerless; otherwise, he would not be “seeking whom he may devour,” he would just be devouring everyone. Thankfully, we are told in Colossians 2:15 that Jesus stripped the enemy of all his power and made a public spectacle of him. You might be saying, “Well if he has no power then why am I going through all these challenges in my life?” Ephesians 4:27 (NIV) says, “And do not give the devil a foothold.” In other words, we shouldn’t give him an opportunity to devour us. What does this have to do with dust on our feet? In Genesis 3:14 after the enemy deceived Eve in the garden, the Lord God said to satan, “Because you have done this, You are cursed more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you shall go, And you shall eat dust All the days of your life” (NKJV, emphasis added). The dust on our feet represents offense that we have taken from the rejection of others. You see, when we take offense from others
and don’t allow Jesus (The Word of God) to wash our feet we become “the special” on the devil’s menu. We turn into the “whom he may devour,” giving the enemy an opportunity to attack us because we are holding tight to our offenses. Additionally, one reason why some prayers are not answered (Mark 11:25) and the feeling of despair can fall upon people is because of unforgiveness – not letting go of our offenses. I’m not saying to live in a bubble and pretend like nothing bothers you - that won’t work. Ephesians 4:26 (NKJV) says, “‘Be angry, and do not sin’: do not let the sun go down on your wrath.” So, choose your words wisely in the time of battle. Then, before the night is over, open the Word of God and let Jesus wash your feet, thus allowing you to release any offense that you faced that day. When you see the person that offended you, ask the Holy Spirit for help in walking in love toward them and just try to remember how much Jesus loves you. Never forget the beating He endured and what he went through on the cross for us, so we would not have to, now or ever. Start now and let go of any offenses! Shake the dust from your feet and wash them with the Word of God. Stay off the devil’s dinner menu and always remember what Jesus did for us. Glory!

Significant Choice >>> BY TOMMY BURRUS

arming can be a rewarding but fickle career. It involves battling insects, animals, disease, and weather for the reward of a crop. One particular man managed to have a very successful crop, but that left him with a storage problem. Being a clever and resourceful businessman, he quickly had bigger barns constructed. Even after construction costs, his harvest was still sufficient to guarantee him many years of income. Surveying his accomplishment and relishing in his good fortune, he made a decision to finally retire. He would no longer have to go to bed early to prepare for an early morning; his frugal lifestyle and his new fortune would allow him the luxury of sleeping late. He could now afford to splurge and enjoy some of the finer things in life. He would put the stress and worry behind him—no more fretting over too much or too little rain, no more anxiety about cold snaps or weevils or cutworms or blight or crows. Instead of simple meals eaten hastily, he could linger over fine dining experiences. He planned to devote his time to more cheerful and leisurely pursuits. Unfortunately, he never lived to enjoy the fruits of his labor. He died suddenly and unexpectedly the same night that he announced his retirement. What is even more tragic is that this man had never given any thought to his eternity. Though he had sacrificed and prepared for retirement, he had no provision for his eternal soul. This story may be familiar. It is one that Jesus relates in Luke 12:15-21. Jesus summarized that story by saying, “Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship

with God” (Luke 12:21, NLT). Jesus tells the story in response to a request that He mediate a squabble between brothers over an inheritance. The story forces us to take stock of our lives in view of eternity and focus on those things that are eternally significant. The start of a new year provides a great opportunity for us to evaluate our lives. We have the chance to improve our spiritual lives, and we can resolve to change things about ourselves that will make us healthier, happier, and more productive. However, if we disregard the caveat of Jesus’ parable, we may make positive changes that only impact us in this world while neglecting our relationship with God and failing to store up treasures in Heaven. The key is in what we choose to make the most significant. Good manners, material wealth, and physical health are good goals, but do they deserve a place of great significance? Should they not rather be secondary considerations in the bigger picture of eternity? We just need to keep things in their proper priority. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus taught that we are to prioritize God’s kingdom above all else (Matthew 6:33). God has given Jesus the highest place of honor and importance (Colossians 1:18 & Philippians 2:9-11). Consider another figure from the New Testament: John the Baptist. He knew who he was and he understood his mission. His role was to prepare the way for Jesus’ ministry. John understood that Jesus deserved the place of prominence (John 1:15, 27, 30, Luke 3:16, & John 3:30-31), and John was content to fulfill his purpose.
Like the farmer, John the Baptist’s work had its challenges. As with farming, water was a concern. John had to relocate at times due to a lack of water for baptizing (John 3:23). Where farmers must guard against insects and birds, John’s challenges were religious leaders, soldiers, and even his own followers. At one point, some of John’s followers were squabbling because they felt that John had undermined his own ministry and reputation by vouching for Jesus (John 3:25-26). In droves, people were abandoning John in favor of Jesus. John showed himself clever and resourceful and diffused the tension by explaining that God’s intent had always been for John to fade into the background (John 3:27-30). John made no attempt to grasp at his former position or popularity. Where we might expect pettiness and envy, John demonstrates humility and submission. He tells those critical followers, “A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven” (John 3:27, KJV). John compared himself to the best man at a wedding who rejoices and celebrates the happy marriage of the groom. John did not have the wealth accumulated by the farmer, but he lived a fulfilled and effective life and was prepared for eternity. The frustrated followers may have thought John a failure for pointing people to Jesus, but the truth was, even as his followers forsook him, that was the measure of his success. The demise of John’s ministry had God’s stamp of approval. Even when John was arrested and executed, it was because of his faithfulness to God (Mark 6:17-27). From prison, Paul wrote of the transformation of his priorities that occurred when he was saved (Philippians 3:4-14). Paul is explaining that he had placed significance in his heritage, the rituals of Judaism, his membership with the Pharisees, and his zeal for his beliefs. After his conversion, Paul says, “But all these things that I once thought very worthwhile - now I’ve thrown them all away so that I can put my trust and hope in Christ alone. Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the priceless gain of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. I have put aside all else, counting it worth less than nothing, in order that I can have Christ” (Philippians 3:7-8, TLB). He realized that his previous priorities were not eternally significant, so he replaced them with the more worthy values of knowing Christ and gaining the reward of serving Christ.
Paul, John the Baptist, and the wealthy farmer all serve as reminders that God has a different value system than the world. In God’s kingdom, we gain by surrendering (Matthew 19:29), become great by serving (Matthew 20:25-27), are exalted through humility (Matthew 23:12), we live by dying to ourselves (Galatians 2:20), and come in first by being last (Matthew 20:16). As we continue into the new year, let us resolve to place a greater significance on spiritual matters. Let us seek God and His kingdom first and fulfill the purpose for which God created us. Glory!
