Dear Friends, Have you ever noticed how fast nature goes from brown to green in a matter of weeks? It has to be one of the greatest things to watch happen in the springtime. God is truly amazing. Not only will He bring back the green leaves and beautiful flowers this spring, but He will renew you from the inside out if you allow Him to. Feed on God’s Word and run to Jesus. In Tommy Burrus’ article on page 24, “Bricks and Stones and Broken Bones,” he reminds us that our self-image should be based on Christ within us rather than the world’s standards. We should not let the world steal what makes us special! The cover story this month spotlights one of Tampa’s boldest evangelists, RV Brown. We interviewed him over dinner at Michael’s Grill. The food was great, and the conversation was even better. I could have sat for several more hours just listening to RV. He captured our attention and we hung on every word. He is certainly a great example of someone that follows Jesus no matter what others think. He boldly steps out to share the Gospel with anyone who comes across his path. Gift from God
Gold Teeth Undergoing radiation treatment for cancer in the head and neck area has several major side effects, one of which is damage to the teeth and gums. An existing problem of decay or damage will be greatly hastened by lack of saliva and receding gums caused by the radiation treatment. The problem that arises in many patients is having the finances to pay for increasing dental work. One would hope that since the damage to the teeth, gums, and mouth is caused by radiation that cancer survivors would be able to get help through their insurance. However, this isn't the case. Other than a small discount from some policies, dentists will not perform any necessary work without cash or credit. This leaves the patient to deal with thousands of dollars in dental bills. Not having perfect teeth before radiation, I researched this intensely. I looked for some help, some charity that would help with this issue that affects thousands of cancer patients each year. Being on disability and paying for extensive dental services was impossible. There were no agencies that dealt with this particular issue. One morning I was watching a Christian show and the guest had prayed for and received gold teeth. Being from a church that believes in the gifts of the Spirit and a volunteer on the local prayer line, I decided God would help me if I asked. I prayed sincerely for God to replace my damaged teeth with gold ones. I felt confident this would be done because God answers prayer if we have the faith that it will be done. He can move mountains if we believe. During the year, I was able to get some help from a dental school. I got dental work done whenever we had the money, which wasn't often. My teeth were getting worse and the dental school only discounted part of the cost of procedures. I continued to expect the gold teeth. One day I received a letter from a group called DDS (Donated Dental Services). One of my letters or applications was received by this group, which is a national humanitarian program developed and coordinated by NFDH. The group collaborates with thousands of volunteer dentists and laboratories throughout
the country. The letter stated that I would be contacted by an area dentist who would help me with my dental issues. I could not believe this was happening. I prayed for gold teeth and a year and a half later I got this letter. God did answer my prayer. It was not the way I expected, but the painful future I faced was now eliminated. Three months later, I was informed that DDS had found a dentist in Riverview that would take my case and there would be no cost for the work. I immediately thanked God for his help and direction.
"But whatever is good and perfect comes to us from God..." (James 1:17, TLB). My wife and I had some unexpected expenses. We live within our budget, but the budget is tight. Despite the extra job I have, we were in a pinch. We prayed knowing our loving heavenly Father was not caught off guard by our dilemma and was ready and able to provide for our needs.
I was met by a cheerful staff and treated like a regular patient. To my surprise the dentist did not inflict any pain during the first procedure. After nine procedures, from drilling to extractions, I have felt little or no discomfort and have unshakable confidence in this dentist and staff. My dentist is a true blessing that I believe was arranged by God.
We got a phone call from some friends inviting us to lunch. These are special people to us, but we haven't been able to get together with them in a while. They not only treated us to a nice lunch, but also handed us a check! They explained that God had led them to bless us, and we should treat that money as a gift from God. We are rejoicing in the faithfulness of God in the generous heart of such friends that God would choose to use! Our prayer is that the Lord would multiply the seed they sowed and reward them with the fruit of the gift in their lives.

God is Faithful From a young age, I learned the importance of what we speak. Each of us has the power to create a loving environment that overcomes all obstacles in our life by trusting in God’s promises, or we can destroy. There is creative power in the tongue (see Proverbs 18:21). If we trust God and what He said, we can prosper even as our soul prospers. I have been married to the same woman since high school, going on 38 years. I went to college while we raised our family of five children. We had our ups and downs, but through all the years I would not change anything. Our partnership in life and marriage is rooted in Jesus Christ. We chose to be happy no matter what, even when the situation appeared hopeless or unfair. We both made a choice to study the Word of God, pray for each other, and share our worship of God in the way we lived our lives. God has been faithful even when we have stumbled. All of our children are loving and productive people, and my heart overflows with happiness as I see God's hand in their lives, each with their own walk. I am well pleased. God gave us insight, as in Proverbs 18:7, which says, “A fool’s mouth is his destruction, And his lips are the snare of his soul” (NKJV). My wife and I camped on those words to understand what God is telling us, which is watch what we say. Our words have creative power. We can change our situation (financially, health wise, mentally) by what we confess (speak). Think on Job 22:28, “You will also declare a thing, And it will be established for you; So light will shine on your ways” (NKJV). I learned to be open to the Holy Spirit in these matters.
In Mark 11:22-26, Jesus said, “Have faith in God. For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them. And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses” (NKJV).
By applying our faith and speaking faith-filled words, my wife and I have seen God open the windows of Heaven for our family. There have been times where God's angels have protected our family from car accidents, poverty, and several other things. He has blessed us with jobs and pay raises. He has met our every need. We have seen healing in our lives, as well as others healed, from cancer to smashed fingers. Prayer and faith in Who has already supplied all our needs allowed us to receive the blessings (by faith, not by sight).
Faith in God puts His creative power to work in our lives. It takes faith to call things that are not as though they were. God’s best is available to us today; Jesus already paid the price for our healing when He died on the cross and rose again. Jesus conquered all sin, disease, and lack. However, we do need to do something to receive our forgiveness, healing, or financial need: we need to have faith and hold on to Jesus. Receiving from God is based on knowing what His Word says, choosing to believe, and understanding that Jesus loves
us so much that He died on the cross so we would be redeemed from the curse of the law. Our confession (the words we speak) is a way of acting on our faith and becomes easier to achieve when we keep our eyes on Jesus. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Read through the Gospels and see how Jesus healed everyone who believed. Jesus says we can have what we ask for. It's not ignoring the problem or situation; it's about asking the Holy Spirit for guidance and trusting that God is willing and able. Sometimes the journey is long, but we must stay faithful and expect God’s best every day. Do not ever give up; your blessing could be right around the corner. Our God is a great and WONDERFUL God. His desire is for us to be happy and prosper in all areas of our lives. All we have to do is believe. I have seen this principle at work in my life and for other family members. Short Game >>> BY JOHN FAULKNER
There’s nothing like a Saturday afternoon on the golf course with a few buddies. My testosterone is at an all-time high and my common sense falls somewhere at the other end of the spectrum. The first hole is a long par four, approximately 400 yards, with a slight dogleg to the right. It’s time to let the Big Dog (my driver) eat! I have already forgotten how my trusty driver just hit thirty balls on the range - and not one straight enough to hit this fairway! No worries. I tee it high and let it fly! There is a bunker on the right side of the fairway around 225 yards from the tee box. Today, I wish I would have landed there, and so does the guy whose screen enclosure I hit. Note to self: avoid purchasing a home on the right side of a fairway, 225 yards from tee box! Now on a typical Saturday, Big Dog gets a chance to shine about 14 times a round. He will probably let me down more than half of them. This is usually about the time that I realize that my fascination with hitting the long ball has caused me to neglect my already deficient short game. Maybe next time I’ll get to the course a little early and practice my chipping and putting. It is this practice in the little things that leads to true greatness. From amateurs to touring pros, low scores are almost always the product of a good short game. Seventy-five percent of all golf shots are hit from within 125 yards. In direct proportion, touring pros spend around 75% of their time working on their short game, those close-range techniques that focus on precision. That’s probably why they get paid for it and we still have to pay to do it!

Understanding the importance of a good short game is essential, not only in golf but in life and business. So often we place too much importance on big events and miss the seemingly smaller things that will bring us the joy and success that we long for. In his letter to the Philippians, the apostle Paul encouraged them to wrap their minds around things that might seem obvious, but if left unchecked can cause the biggest problems. “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you” (Philippians 4:8-9, NIV).

Notice that Paul never mentioned any of the “buzz words” that we use today. He didn’t mention any of the strategies that can be found in many of the business books on the shelf today. While these are important, without simple fundamentals, success can be very elusive. Paul’s advice probably won’t be quoted on Oprah or Dr. Phil, but those who put his words into practice will experience the great peace from God that was promised. I plan on teeing it up this weekend with a different mindset. First, I will practice my short game, on and off the course. I might pull out a few of my short game clubs, like my forgiveness iron or my generosity wedge. Secondly, I plan on keeping “Big Dog” on a short leash. FORE!

RV
Brown is not your typical evangelist. His stature and powerful voice moves people to action when he speaks. He is excited about Jesus Christ and the impact He has on your life, if you allow it. His siblings taught him to work hard for what he wanted, how to share, and the importance of being a part of a family. His older brother introduced him to little league football, which led to RV lettering in five sports in high school. Upon graduating, he did not receive a scholarship so he went to work for a few years before a friend encouraged him to go to college.
Living Out His Plan RV received his degree in Special Education from South Carolina State University, where he also played football all

coming up from the water.” RV saw the three beams of light as a representation of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. God had answered RV and he knew what to do next. He said, “I’ll never look back, God.” He resigned from his position and listened to God’s call.
RV portrays a mighty man of God with humility and inner strength. This speaks volumes to anyone who is timid about letting go for God.
As a teacher for middle school and then high school, RV had the opportunity to coach football, basketball, wrestling, and baseball. He learned that many of the kids he coached in the inner city schools did not have a father in their life, and he was often able to share his faith without breaking school rules. RV felt compassion for his players, taking a special interest in their lives. He helped them learn discipline, routine, and accountability while being a part of a team. RV positively impacted their lives and, at times, even filled in as a father figure and friend to these young men. RV said, “I took a school that didn’t hardly win anything and won [multiple championships] because of weight training and making those kids believe in themselves.” RV witnessed several of his players move on to do great things with their lives and even play professional football. In 1985 the Holy Spirit revealed to RV the calling of evangelism on his life. He began traveling to preach at various places on the weekend. He loved coaching and teaching, but he realized that he needed to make a choice. “Am I going to serve God full time or am I going to be a coach?” RV said. In his last year as a teacher, RV took on the challenge of teaching in an alternative school. The kids placed there had been expelled from regular school. He had the opportunity to impact these young troubled lives and used it as a chance to share God with them. RV did Bible studies and prayed with the students. One of the students got in trouble and was expelled from the alternative school as well. When the officials were going to take him out of the classroom, the student looked at RV and said, “I got into trouble because you didn’t have prayer with us Friday." RV said, "That’s what launched my ministry.”
God’s Call, RV’s Answer In 1988, RV knew it was time to pursue ministry full time. Most people tried to talk him out of it, and he even questioned his calling. He spent time in prayer seeking the Lord, often on an eight-foot rock behind his house. One morning, RV explained, “The sun came up and it was shining in the trees, and I could feel the heat of the sun on my eyes. I looked up through the tree limb and there were three beams of light and steam

RV founded Outreach To America’s Youth (O.T.A.Y.) that same year. He was inspired by the kids in the alternative school and wanted to make a difference in the lives of young people. The youth are the future of this world and RV’s motto is “Reach 1.” If he can reach just one child, he is making a difference. With O.T.A.Y., RV has ministered to the youth through churches, prisons, retreats, camps, schools, conferences, and college campuses. O.T.A.Y. offers training to equip young people to make wise choices. RV’s bold message and extra large muscular physique grab the youth’s attention and respect. “Through motivational speaking and visual presentations, students are challenged to evaluate their perception of issues they are facing today” (www.rvbrown.com). “We talk about drugs, attitude, respect, honoring parents, and graduation,” RV said. He walks in wearing a cap and gown to show kids they are in school to get an education and graduate. In over 20 years of ministry RV has had the opportunity to preach the Good News in 48 states and 43 countries. His robust build and inspirational messages have also given RV the platform to minister and encourage several college and NFL players, including former Tampa Bay Buccaneers Derrick Brooks, Michael Pittman, Dexter Jackson, Roman Oben, and Chartric Darby. RV has shown these men that they can be physically strong and still be a Christ follower. “Look at me. Do I look like a little softy?” RV said. “I want them to see its okay to be excited about Jesus.” RV portrays a mighty man of God with humility and inner strength. This speaks volumes to anyone who is timid about letting go for God. Some of the athletes impacted by RV wrote personal testimonies of their experiences in RV’s book, Step Up to the Plate, Dad!
Step Up to the Plate, Dad! RV has a special calling to teach and encourage men and, in particular, dads. After one of his speaking engagements at Polk Correctional Institution, RV was inspired to write his book. A huge, tough-looking young man came up to him and, as his eyes swelled up with tears, he told RV how he never had a father in his life. RV said, “I went home that night and all I could see was that boy’s face and him crying. So I got up and started writing.” The book focuses on dads because RV began thinking about all the hurting kids he encountered throughout his years of coaching and ministering. Many of these directionless young men had no influence from a father figure in their life. “Dad has to put his hand print into the kids’ lives,” RV explained. He wants dads to see their role as God intended, as the leader of the family.
DAD on the cover of his book stands for “Dad with an Attitude to Defend the family.” RV teaches men to be the spiritual leader of their household, train their children up in the Lord, love their wife, and be self-sacrificing. “The whole thrust of this book is to show men what God can do in your life if you step up to the plate,” he explained. This is a wonderful tool for young men, potential fathers, and parents alike. In his book, RV shared that if his own father had not lived righteously before him, praying with him, it would have been hard for him to receive the truth of Jesus Christ. He drives home the point that dads should not take their role in the family for granted because the impact of their love and correction in a child’s life can be eternal. Another large focus of RV’s ministry is the importance of the family unit. He imparted another of his dynamic acronyms for the word FAMILY – “Father Accept the Mother, Influence the Life of the Young.” He stated, “We’ve got to get people to realize that we have to bring the family back together. Before there was church, God created family." RV said there are three pieces of advice he shares with parents on raising godly children. The first is prayer and agreement. The parents need to be in prayer together and be in agreement on the way they raise their children (see Amos 3:3). Children also need to see commitment. RV and his wife demonstrate this for their two children. The second is love and affection. RV explained that children need their parents to express love to them
through hugs and kisses. Your affection towards your children builds self-esteem and teaches them loving habits. The third is to have meal time together. This should be a time where you talk to your kids about what’s happening in their lives so you are continually staying connected to them. RV said after dinner, the plates can be pushed to the middle of the table and the Bible brought out for devotions together. “The Bible has to be a part of the family.... If you do these three things, your family will change,” RV said.
READ THE BOOK
Why So Bold? RV’s enthusiasm for the Lord and the fire in his eyes for Jesus is so apparent when you meet him. He takes any ordinary situation as an opportunity to minister and share Christ. Some might think, “Why so bold, RV?” Hebrews 4:16 (NKJV) says “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace in time of need,” and Hebrews 13:6 (NKJV) says, “So we may boldly say: ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?’” There are several other scriptures that talk of a believer’s boldness in Christ. RV takes every word in the Bible as Truth. He doesn’t try to be bold … he is bold. he good news is that there is a way into Heaven, but just being a good person won’t pay for your ticket. It’s hard to swallow in today’s politically correct society. Going to church and being a good person won't erase the sin in our lives. Only Jesus can do that. That is why He died on the cross. In the next verse, Jesus says, “If you really knew Me, you would know My Father as well…” (John 14:7, NIV). Don't be deceived in thinking that just because you believe in a higher power that you will enter Heaven when you die. There is only "One way" - Jesus! Say this prayer aloud: Father God, I come before you in the Name of Jesus. Your Word says, “Whosoever shall call on the Name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21, KJV) and “if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9, NKJV). Father God, I believe your Word is truth and I stand on it now. Please forgive me for all my sins and unrighteousness. Today I make Jesus my Lord and Savior and I believe God raised Him from the dead, and He is seated at the right hand of the Father in Heaven. Father I ask that you fill me with your Holy Spirit to guide and teach me as I walk this earth and grow spiritually (Luke 11:13; Luke 12:12). I thank You for making a place for me in Your Kingdom, please guide me in the direction that will eternally please You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

hat is your testimony? The Bible says in Revelation 12:11 (NIV), "They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death." We all have a story and it has the potential to speak volumes to others who may feel as though they are imprisoned by their own story. My purpose in sharing this testimony is for that one person who reads this article and can relate to any part of it. If that person is you, may you also overcome and live a life of victory by accepting Jesus Christ. Allow Him to take you through the process of making you over from the inside out. I was sexually abused between the ages of six and ten, which opened up a path, in hindsight, of what looked like sheer destruction. I began a life-long journey of being an overachiever, outgoing, bubbly, and full of life. However, what wasn’t known (not even by me) was that I was dying on the inside, full of shame, guilt, fear, low self-esteem, and the emptiness of never feeling loved. I was a child that stuffed all of her emotions into a steel box. I bolted it shut to prevent anyone from finding out and to ensure that I would never return to those places of pain. I was a child that developed a phony persona and used compulsive behaviors as coping mechanisms to hide from the shame, guilt, and fear. I did not grow up in church, but I was a perfectionist – the one that looked like she had it all together, although, on the inside I was only surviving. How many of us have lived a life of just surviving? A front was created in place of the real Amie. At the age of 17, I got pregnant and ended up having an abortion. Years later, the same boyfriend who I became pregnant by committed suicide and hung himself in his dad’s apartment. He mentioned my name in his premeditated letter and wondered why I did not have his baby. More pain to stuff into that steel box. Shortly after, I became pregnant with my son (my firstborn) and got married because of the pregnancy. I always dreamed of the huge white wedding, but instead I remember fighting with my soon-to-be husband the day we were married by the justice of the peace. Getting married that way was truly not my heart’s desire. I should have known what I was in for next based on that day's argument.
Over the course of the next three years I was beaten, controlled, punched in the mouth, cheated on, emotionally abused, and living in fear. I was dealing with even more shame and guilt, and I locked it all up once again. I did not want anyone to ever see what was truly happening to me. I can remember the last fight. As I looked at my son, who was just a baby at the time, I knew at that moment he would not grow up to be like his father. Although I didn’t understand what was happening to me or even why, I called an attorney and began the process of divorce. In fear, I left before the divorce was final and made my way out west to California. I drove 3,000 miles away so I could make a new life for me and my son. I was running away from my past and hoping to leave it all in that steel box to be locked away forever. Thinking that I would never end up with someone to love me or my son, I settled in and began working. I was waiting tables and through the course of a year or so, I began dating. Shortly after that I became pregnant and gave birth to my
The next seven years took me through a process – a “Divine Appointment” – tailored just for me. It ultimately unlocked that steel box to release the shame, guilt, and fear. I was set free once and for all from my past. I made the decision to go back to school to get my Cosmetology license. I did not understand yet the full scope of what God was trying to do, but I saw a salon in my future. I was on fire for the Lord and felt like I was about to explode daily. A mentor was placed in my life to pump in the Word of God. During this time, I felt as though I was being intravenously fed the Word of God. I couldn’t get enough. Later, I was given another mentor who helped me achieve an even deeper relationship with God. She is a pastor and Christian counselor. She allowed me to release the anger that was locked up in that steel box. Due to the shame that I carried, I never thought I would go to a counselor, but God had a different plan and I was on board to follow it through. Finally, God directed me to a “Transformation” class, which helped me understand why I carried the shame, guilt,
I did not want anyone to ever see what was truly happening to me. second child. Due to the turmoil with my first husband, I never planned on getting married again. I spent the next 10 years with that same man and had my third child with him. We finally married and one year later we were divorced. Still empty with even more pain and guilt, I now had three children that were also being affected. I would ultimately lock away all these emotions into that steel box. I then spiraled into many relationships searching for love in all the wrong places. Nothing could fill the emptiness that I was so desperately seeking to fill. I had the attitude that if a man couldn’t fill that empty space then just maybe a woman could. With that being said, Satan sent that woman, who I spent the next two and a half years with. I finally went to my knees to accept Jesus Christ knowing that if a man couldn’t fill the void and certainly not a woman, then I had one shot left. I cried out on my knees and asked the Lord into my heart. I was all alone, convinced that absolutely nothing could fill my empty place. I said “Lord, if you are who you say you are, come into my heart and change everything! I want you to shake it up!” So He did exactly that!
and fear. This class brought me back to a pain that only God could heal … and that is exactly what He did by setting me free. In all of this, God never let the dream of owning a salon fall to the wayside. It would be more than just doing hair behind the chair. God intended to use my victory over the enemy’s attempts to destroy me as my testimony to share behind that chair; the same testimony that would set others free. He has since combined all of my God-given talents of teaching, preaching, mentoring, and speaking as a tool to use behind the chair. It birthed “Divine Appointment,” where it’s not just about hair, but about “Makeovers from the Inside Out.” This is a safe place where we not only beautify the outside of a person, but we tap into the inside. We teach “Making Peace With Your Past” to give HOPE for a person’s intended future.

How many times have you dialed a business only to hear, “Please hold, your estimated time to wait is…?” I wonder how many times you have waited, then decided you can’t wait any longer and prematurely hung up the phone just as the operator or attendant is coming on the line? Probably more times than you know! Waiting is something that is almost a curse word to many of us. We’ve made it offensive to our soul. We are surrounded by things, systems, and people telling us to do it quickly or else we will miss out. Everything seems to be moving at light speed. Fast food. The internet. The microwave. Because everything else is getting faster, we expect God to lower His standards and rush through everything as well. Not so. He does things perfectly and He has His timing. The truth is, if we don’t wait on God, we may end up with a business, church, or ministry that is growing because of our persistence and God-given gifts, but not because of the perfect plan and timing that God has for us. What we do ourselves won’t last! There is a time to do and a time to wait.

In your life it may appear that God gave you a promise or plan and then He just exited from your life. That’s not the case. You are just in your molding and shaping season. Abraham, David, and Joseph provide us with great yet different examples of waiting. Their examples show us the molding that we have to go through during this time and that though waiting may appear too long (see 2 Peter 3:9), the rewards are supernatural. Try these 3 steps to walk through your waiting period:

This is your preparation period. This is where God purges you and shapes your character for what He has for you in the next level. Learn all that you can during this time.
“I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His Word I put my hope.” Psalm 130:5 (NIV) ↳ Stop! (see Psalm 46:10) Be still! Stop “doing.” Stop trying to figure things out. Stop trying to do something to get out of this situation. Stop listening to everyone else. Stop worrying (see Jeremiah 17:8). Know what season you are in. Just stop. There is a time when God wants us to act or “do.” He’s quite capable of telling you when it’s time to act. Right now it’s time to wait. ↳ Trust God (see Romans 10:11). He created you. He allowed your situation. He designed your destiny. Trust Him. This may take every fiber of your being, but develop a new habit, by saying each moment, “Lord, I’m going to trust You even though this doesn’t make sense. Lord
Whether it is starting a business, creating a new ministry, or taking your church to the next level, be patient during this time. God is doing necessary work in you. Don’t abort the wonderful experiences that He has for you. Be patient and just wait a minute!

When Less is More >>> BY CHRIS CHERP
W
hen I was growing up my mother taught me that I should tithe on any income I made. In my teens, I would ask why and she would say, “Because we're supposed to, that's why.” Then I would respond by rambling on and on about how I tithe in other ways like through my time. Needless to say, I wasn’t tithing back then. It was for the best because I didn't understand any of the principles behind tithing. As a matter of fact in 2 Corinthians 9:6 (MSG) it says, “Remember: A stingy planter gets a stingy crop; a lavish planter gets a lavish crop." At that time, the stingy part fit me perfectly, even though I didn't see it. Second Corinthians 9:7 (NIV) goes on to say, “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." My heart wasn't right so it would have been pointless to tithe back then. Let me share with you how the Lord changed my heart through His Word. I went from a stingy planter to a lavish planter and God has blessed all my finances because of it. Hidden in the precious Word of God are the answers to every question we may have about the issues of life. I found that the Bible addressed the very questions I had about tithing that no one was able to answer for me. First, I questioned, “Wasn’t tithing under the Old Covenant?” The answer is yes. However, it is also found before the Old Covenant and in the New Covenant. In Hebrews 7:1-9, the Word speaks of a time before the Law was given, when Abraham brought the tithe to God. His descendants Isaac (Genesis 26:12-14), and Jacob (Genesis 28:20-22) did so as well. They were blessed with gold, silver, and livestock because of it. They became rich and not just spiritually. Law or no law, just seeing what tithing did for these men was enough to catch my interest to dig a little further. The best part is that the Lord is no respecter of persons (Romans 2:11). If He blessed them abundantly because they tithed then He would do the same for me. I was beginning to see the light.

This led me to ask: “So, why did tithing bless these men so much?” To answer that question we must first have an understanding of the divine curse on the earth. This is expressed clearly in Genesis 3:17 (MSG): "[God] told the Man: ‘Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree That I commanded you not to eat from, "Don't eat from this tree," The very ground is cursed because of you….’” If the ground is cursed, wouldn’t what comes from the ground be cursed as well? This would include money. I know this may sound strange, but think about it and read Deuteronomy 28:15-68 as well. Paper money and checks originate from trees, and metal coins come from minerals which are mined from the earth. Even God formed man from the dust of the earth (Genesis 2:7). However, God has made a way for us through Jesus; all who believe on Him are redeemed from the curse (Galatians 3:13). But how is our money redeemed? It is redeemed through the tithe! The revelation of this information was amazing to me. Let me explain. In Romans 11:16 (BBE) it states, “And if the first-fruit is holy, so is the mass: and if the root is holy, so are the branches.” The first-fruit represents the tithe. When you bring the tithe to God, the rest of your money becomes holy. This was the missing link I had been searching for; it was like a light went on when I read this verse. God created a way for all believers to circumvent the curse so He could bless our money. All we have to do is believe that God is true to His Word and follow the simple instructions He gives us. Study the Word, and let God give you revelation. In Malachi 3:10 (NLT) God challenges all believers to tithe: “‘Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,’ says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, ‘I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put Me to the test!’” That’s exactly what I did. I am living proof that living off 90% of my income with God’s blessing on it far exceeds the life I once lived with 100% of my income. Take the challenge! Glory!

Bricks and Stones and Broken Bones >>> BY TOMMY BURRUS

Have you ever sat in a cubicle and wondered how you got there? Once upon a time, you were a carefree child. You ran or rode a bike for the sheer pleasure. Perhaps, like me, you had an inventive imagination that turned an ordinary refrigerator box into a fort, a tunnel boring machine, or an airplane. A few weeks ago, I watched a program featuring Rabbi Daniel Lapin of the American Alliance of Jews and Christians. He was explaining the significance of the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11. Rather than constructing the tower with stones, they used bricks in the place of stones. He used that as an analogy to explain that the world's system tries to make people uniform (like bricks) as a means of control. Bricks are all the same size and shape; they are completely interchangeable. The Tower of Babel was an attempt to build a society on humanistic principles instead of upon God's Word. A light dawned for me. What came to mind was 1 Peter 2:5 (TLB), which says, "And now you have become living building-stones for God's use in building His house." Stones had been the preferred building material until this point. Stones naturally differ in size and shape. God makes each of us unique. He gives us special talents and abilities.

Right down to our finger prints, God has created each of us to be distinctive.
God has made us specifically to fit in His master plan; we all have a purpose. Paul explains that principle in 1 Corinthians 12:12-27. We are like different body parts joined together to function as a whole. No one body part is more important than another. We have different appearances, but each of us is critical to a fully-functioning body. However, there are many forces in the world trying to make us conform to their standards. I remember as a teenager telling my parents that my clothes were the way I expressed my individuality. Strangely, I chose to express my individuality by trying to dress like everyone else! I find it humorous and humbling now when I look back at the pictures from those years. As a father, I've watched the process of conformation in my own children. Because some child told her that she laughs weird, my daughter started using a very generic, fake laugh. I told her that her natural laugh was like music to me and to God. Perhaps you learned that ancient rhyme, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." If only! Words are powerful things, especially in careless mouths. Emotional scars from hurtful words seem to have a longer recovery period than it takes a broken bone to mend.
Aside from careless words, the media is another and often negative influence on our self-esteem. Due to movies and magazines, the youth, and even adults, become critical of their appearance. The world’s system has a certain image of beauty and tries to hold everyone up to this unrealistic standard. However, we must not fall susceptible to these distortions of true beauty, as that comes from Jesus living on the inside of us. The Bible tells us that it is unwise to compare ourselves with others (2 Corinthians 10:12). Instead, we should glory that we are created in God's image. We should remind ourselves that we are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). We should acknowledge that our differences are part of what makes us special. Negative comments about our appearance, whether they come from inside ourselves or from others, are the enemy's way to discourage and distract us from living up to what God created us to be. We may want to be more physically fit, and we can adopt reasonable methods to reach those goals over time. However, we don't have control over how tall we are (Matthew 6:27). Our nose, ears, and other features are a part of our family genetics and God's design. It is my hope that younger readers may take comfort in the fact that many of those features that cause dismay now will become focal points of beauty as you blossom with age. As you grow and develop, those features will become less dominant. Consider what the Bible says about Jesus in Isaiah 53:2b (NASB): "He has no stately form or majesty That we should look upon Him, Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him." Despite most Renaissance art, Jesus did not have a halo over Him. Though He is the King of kings, there was nothing regal about His look. The multitudes and the apostles were not drawn to Jesus because of His physical appearance. The Bible reveals that we are not to be conformed to this world (Romans 12:2), but we are to be conformed to the image of Jesus (Romans 8:29). Don't allow the world to rob you of what makes you special. God created you to be like a stone, unique and special. He has created you for a purpose, and you are the only one who can truly fulfill that purpose. When you feel the pressure to "be like everyone else," realize that this direction has not come from God but from a world that wants to remake you in its own image. Embrace those differences as gifts from our loving Creator. Decide to be a living stone and not a brick. Glory!

Take a "Time-Out" >>> BY CASIO JONES
A
s most Americans, I love sports. During most sports like soccer, basketball, football, and baseball each team is battling to win and claim victory over the other. Throughout each game, the physical struggle between the opposing teams to advance the ball can become very intense. Over time, this high intensity play can exhaust even the most physically-fit athlete. Often, we see a coach or a player call for a time-out to help the team recharge, in order to increase their chances of victory. Since most of us are not professional athletes, we might not see the need for a time-out in our lives. However, the average American has a very busy lifestyle, running to soccer games, business trips, dinner parties, school functions, etc. We never seem to have enough time for ourselves. When we finally come up for air, we realize we have become trapped in the rat race of life. This month, I’m going to encourage you to take a "Time-Out" to recharge your batteries. The stresses of life can drain us and prevent us from contributing to our community and fulfilling our purpose in life. As Christians, we are called to give to others, just like Christ gave to us. However, in order for us to pour into others, our own cup must be filled. Jesus told us to give Him all of our cares and anxieties because He loves us and knows we can’t handle the pressures of life on our own. Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV) reads, “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in

heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” So this month, try some of these simple methods for recharging yourself to give you strength to manage the stresses of life: Aromatherapy – The scent of herbs and natural oils can help you relax, soothe muscle tension, and reduce headaches caused by stress.
