In Chris Cherp’s article, “Forgiven Future,” he talks about this amazing truth and God’s grace. Check it out on page 24. Tired of seeing secular movies in theaters? There is a new Christian movie called The Message. It was filmed in the Tampa Bay area with many local actors. Liss Cartagena, co-owner of Integrity Films, let us know about their new film. According to Pangelo.com, this film “was made to bring awareness of God's ever presence and His ability to enable us to experience His love in neverending ways and through many different outlets.” There are some show times in April open to the public at Centro Muvico Ybor. For other locations and more information, go to www.pangelo.com. I plan on checking it out! Dear Friends, “But the angel answered and said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for He is risen, as He said’” (Matthew 28:5-6, NKJV). Praise King Jesus! Our Lord is risen! There is no reason to fear for Jesus is alive; He has overcome it all, even death. Let’s rejoice and thank our Lord for what He did for us through His death and Resurrection. Easter is a great time to spend with family and friends sharing fun, food, and fellowship. But, let’s not forget the great significance of this holy day. Tommy Burrus' article, "Personal Easter," explains why the Resurrection of Jesus is important to each of us and to Christianity (page 18). Featured on the cover this month are the Armstrongs. In “Finding True Peace in Christ” on page 12, read how this family found their true source of peace during a difficult time in their lives. God Gives Wisdom Proverbs 2:6 says, “For the LORD gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding” (NKJV). I’ve learned that the more time I spend with the Lord (reading His Word, meditating on His Word, and listening to His Word), the more I come to understand Him and hear from Him. I am carrying my first child, and I struggled with the decision of whether to leave my job or return to work after the baby is born. I have been in prayer on this subject, and I know the Lord gives wisdom to those who ask. God has put several passions in my heart to pursue, but the greatest of these passions is to be a mother. I realized the only thing that was holding me back was finances. I was concerned about living on my husband’s income alone. I believe I knew the answer before I even asked God for wisdom, but He is

a good and merciful God and will remind you when you need it. He told me in my spirit that He will take care of my family. God also revealed to me that we will not be living on my husband’s salary alone because He is our provider. He specifically asked me, “Do you believe what I have promised?” That was all I needed to hear. The Lord promised to take care of me and to never forsake me. He said He would provide all of my needs according to His riches in glory. “And my God will meet all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19 (NIV) Long before I ever became pregnant, He was paving the way for me to work from home in an area that I am passionate about and to be a mother. Knowing He Hears Me! "He will call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him" (Psalm 91:15, NIV). "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of Him" (1 John 5:14-15, NIV). These two Scriptures are so powerful together. Psalm 91 tells of His will, while 1 John 5 tells us whatever we ask, if we believe He hears us, is granted to us. I was recently having trouble with my email on my smartphone. I changed my email profile so I could sync my smartphone to my email. Well, with that move came many challenges. I spent a day and a half with no email access. I invested many hours on the phone with tech support and did extensive research online, but the email on my phone still didn't work. That's when I decided to throw my phone out the window. No, just kidding. That's when I decided to ask the Lord to deliver me out of this confusion. The next thing I knew, the Lord led me to a website that simply said to try turning the phone off and the email should work after you turn it back on. Two minutes later, I was reading my email on my smartphone. Praise Jesus! God is always listening, we just need to ask and believe. >>>My Father's Beloved, Tampa

Psalm 34:3 (NKJV)

“Oh magnify the LORD with me, And let us exalt His name together.” God Restores One evening our family went to dinner at our favorite restaurant. During the meal, my young granddaughter needed to use the restroom and I volunteered to take her. We waded through the restaurant as it was very crowded. We finally got in and waited our turn. We then had to wash our hands, which is a chore for small children even with adult help at this particular place. The sinks are very high and the sink fixtures are at the very back of the counter. I lifted her to get her hands washed and rinsed. I set her down and proceeded to try and dry her hands. She was in a big hurry to get back to the table to eat her ice cream. As I was trying to dry my hands, a woman was leaving the restroom and my granddaughter darted for the open door. Unfortunately, the door is very heavy and closes fast and hard. I reached out to grab it, but I was too late. The door closed on her finger. It was pinched quite badly. While she was screaming in pain, I picked her up and carried her out to my husband. He examined her finger and immediately began to pray over her. We agreed she was healed and made whole in Jesus’ Name. Within minutes she stopped crying and was able to eat her ice cream. By the next day, there was only a small, almost unnoticeable line on her finger. It was completely restored. Praise God! >>>KD

Held Hostage for 49 Years From 18 months old to the age of 49, I was held hostage by the devil. I was trapped in a physical body that I hated with a passion. My body didn’t work. It wouldn’t allow me to breathe or to function as a normal human being. I wheezed and sneezed up to a 100 times a day. My eyes would tear so badly that I couldn’t see or become so gritty that I would literally go blind. I would often wake up extremely sick to my stomach or gasping for air feeling panicked and in danger of dying. I lived in constant fear every day. I couldn’t play with the other children, go to gym, be outside, or ever think of camping. I was allergic to 52 out of 56 things that I was tested for. My body never gave me a moment of peace. It hurt so badly all the time that I couldn’t stand to be touched, and I constantly itched all over. I was miserable and living a dismal existence. I would go to sleep and wake up feeling more tired than when I went to bed. I hated and detested my body for never allowing me to feel good. Later on in life, I developed Lupus among all of my other problems. At that point, all I wanted to do was die. I was born again at the age of 12. I loved God with all my heart and got involved in Christian ministry. I served in Christian ministries for more than 30 years and believed that one day God would somehow heal me. I prayed faithfully for a new body - one that would work, function and perform in peace, and allow me to rest. I told God

that if there was any way to get a brand new body in this life that He needed to give me one or I wanted to die. I couldn’t go on in this condition any longer. Finally after all those years, my prayers were answered. A great man of God showed up at my doorstep needing a place to stay while attending a real estate class in Tampa. I didn’t know him well but he was from one of the ministries I had been a part of for many years. This man taught me all about transformation and mind renewal. The root of my health issues was the hate in my heart towards my mother. I was unforgiving, and I felt rejected, helpless, overwhelmed, lost, lonely, and full of fear. These toxic thoughts and emotions had taken over my life. Upon the curses being broken in my life and the deliverance from many evil spirits, I received a brand new body. Today I am delivered and live in peace with a body that works well. I am free of all my allergies, asthma, itching, stomach sickness, and Lupus. My quality of life now is far different than how I lived those first 49 years. I know all of what God delivered me from and I can’t tell you how thankful I truly am for my Savior Jesus Christ, and His shed Blood. I am a walking, living, breathing testimony of God’s goodness, love, and grace and have been given a great opportunity to serve Him. >>>Rev. Ann Cutler, New Life Church

n 1979, Robert Duvall was nominated for an Academy Award for his portrayal of Bull Meecham in the movie, The Great Santini. The movie was about a Marine Corps fighter pilot and the problems he faced trying to balance his job and family. Colonel Meecham was a tough leader that was not afraid to make the quick life-or-death decisions that were required of a squadron leader. His nickname was “The Great Santini,” and men who reported to him knew that there was no tolerance for failure. Like many military families, the Meecham family moved frequently between duty stations. While the Colonel was off on missions, his children would readjust to a new town, meet new friends, and wait for their dad to return home. The problem was that, most of the time, dad never showed up, but the hard-charging commander did. This highly trained warrior wreaked havoc on his family as he struggled to separate the way he trained his men from the way that he treated his family. The same skills that made him successful in leading men into battle systematically destroyed his family. Business leaders today face similar issues. Although, those issues might not seem as extreme as the Colonel’s, they still can have the same devastating effects. They spend 8 or more hours a day holding

“At home, as we lead our families, the strength of our relationships will also be a reflection of our leadership.” people accountable for sales, deadlines, profitability, and efficiency. They then return home and manage their families in a similar fashion. This can cause problems in marriages and child-parent relationships. The first reaction of most would be to work harder on compartmentalizing - leaving work issues, attitudes, and protocols at work. Why not try a different approach? Instead of striving for separation, look for things that build consistency between the two roles. How about taking the servant’s heart required to build a strong, loving, and trusting family to the workplace? Sound impossible? This is what Jesus had to say about the matter: Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:25-28, NIV). Jesus not only taught servant leadership, but also modeled it every day to those who followed Him. In the book Lead Like Jesus Ken Blanchard says, “For followers of Jesus, servant leadership isn’t an option; it’s a mandate. Servant leadership is to be a living statement of who we are in Christ, how we treat one another, and how we demonstrate the love of Christ to the whole world” (pg. 12). Let’s be honest - as leaders we are accountable for results. In business, when evaluating an employee’s performance, we have to make decisions about everything from compensation and advancement to reprimands and termination. Often, the decisions we make reflect our leadership style. At home, as we lead our families, the strength of our relationships will also be a reflection of our leadership. When it’s all said and done, servant leadership is the only type of leadership that will crossover into all areas of our life and honor God at the same time.

MINISTRY SPOTLIGHT

Finding True Peace in Christ >>>BY AMANDA WRIGHT

J

eff and Jan Armstrong have been through an experience that many of us will never have to endure. They’ve walked through affliction and have come out the other side positive, joyful, and closer to the Lord than ever before. There is an undeniable light that radiates from Jeff and Jan’s smiles, and you can’t help but feel a sense of peace around them. Overflow was honored to meet with this loving couple and learn the source of their true peace.

The Blessing of Children James 1:17 tells us, “Every good and perfect gift is from above…” (NIV). Jeff and Jan have been able to experience the precious gift of children through their son Harris and daughter Alison. Harris was promoted to glory and went home to be with the Lord on December 1, 2008, at almost 13 years of age. He battled a rare and aggressive form of cancer, called anaplastic astrocytoma, with peace and complete patience. One might think it would be too hard for Jeff and Jan to share their story, but Jeff said, “We love talking about Harris. He is alive and well [in Heaven] and in fact more perfect than we are.” The Armstrongs don’t dwell on the fact that Harris isn’t physically with them anymore, rather they rejoice that he is already experiencing God’s Kingdom. Jeff said there is joy in knowing that “the world never had a chance to tear away [Harris’ love for Jesus]. [It’s] peaceful and powerful to know that he enjoyed that relationship and now he enjoys it eternally in person.”

thing for them to witness in their child. They saw with their own eyes Harris’ spiritual strength and the peace he had about where he was headed. Jeff said, “Harris’ competitive spirit was fulfilled in that he got to win the race and get the ultimate prize before us.” Alison has similar traits to those Harris demonstrated such as the God-given ability to excel in the game of golf and a no fear attitude when playing the game. “It reminds me of child-like faith,” Jeff said. Golf Pros came to watch Harris play and now they come to watch Alison; it reminds them of when they were young players, just trusting their instincts. Alison is competitive like Harris was, and shows great sportsmanship. “The other junior players like being with her and enjoy her fellowship like they enjoyed Harris’. I think

“Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” Romans 12:12 (NIV)

Harris was an active young man and enjoyed all kinds of competitive sports, but found a special passion for golf. Jeff explained that when Harris was 11 years old he was interviewed on the Golf Channel. He was asked to describe himself in one word and he said, “Compassionate.” That one word so profoundly revealed Harris’ heart. Jeff said, “God is love, mercy, and grace … and it rolls up into being compassionate.” Harris exhibited Christ-like characteristics on and off the course and impacted those around him. The Armstrongs explained that Harris believed in living each day for Jesus, and Harris revealed his walk through his actions and attitude. Jeff and Jan said it was a very humbling and powerful

she makes the same impact with her peers that we know Harris did with his peers,” Jeff commented.

God is Our Strength It’s clear that Jeff and Jan’s children were impacted by Christ at an early age. “Harris knew the Lord,” Jeff said, which was a blessing for them. “We knew he would be alive [in Heaven],” Jan said. “It was a difficult situation, but we relied on God every day.” The Armstrongs continued to lean on God for strength during this time and shared that the Lord walked them through it all. They made it clear that the peace they had was a gift from the Holy Spirit. They recognized that only the Word and God Himself could comfort them. John 16:33 was one such Scripture that soothed their hearts: “I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Jan shared that she wants Alison to understand that “if we lean on Him and let Him be our strength, He can take us through anything we encounter because He has already overcome it all. These are only our temporary troubles.”

During these times, the couple realized that they couldn’t look to each other to meet their needs. “Jeff and I had to seek God on our own and then together at the same time.” As they individually grew closer to the Lord, they grew closer to each other. Their godly marriage was strengthened in a time when many marriages could have fallen apart. Jeff and Jan kept their eyes on the Lord when they felt weak, for they knew that God’s grace and power would get them through it (2 Corinthians 12:9).

“Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary, use words.”

The Armstrongs’ faith has grown as they rest in God’s strength. They view the things of God in a different light today. Jan talked about always having a love for Jesus but said, “I don’t think I really understood the impact of Jesus’ huge significance.” She shared that the reality of Jesus’ intense love for us and the fact that He is the only way, “the bridge,” to our Father God, truly changed what Jesus meant to her. “He did all of that (His death and Resurrection) so we could all be together for eternity; He has made a way. He told us He has overcome the world and that all of these things that have happened are just for a brief time, and then we will all get to be together again,” Jan said.

Christ in a Secular World Jesus has changed some things in Jeff’s life as well in the recent years. He spoke of Philippians 1:21 where Paul says, “to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain” (NIV). A few years ago, Jeff didn’t see himself as one who would have completely embraced this Scripture. He loved Jesus before, but now he acknowledges that he has been transformed. Jeff wants to live each day exclusively for Jesus Christ and demonstrate Christ-like character in everything he does. When Harris went home to be with the Lord, the Armstrongs had two choices: drift away from God or grow closer to Him. They chose the latter, and their desire to know God intensified their worship of Him. Jeff also spoke of “a sense of urgency” that they developed for Christ. He never saw himself as an evangelist and thought that kind of hunger or thirst for the things of God “was more reserved for pastors and church leaders, and not followers.” However, he came to realize that all of God’s people are called to be “fishers of men.”

14   OverflowMag.com   April 2011

Jeff, who is currently Vice President of the Bank of Tampa, got involved with Focus on the Family’s The Truth Project, which is a DVD-based group study of 13 one-hour lessons. “Each lesson discusses in great detail the relevance and importance of living the Christian worldview in daily life” (www.thetruthproject.org). The lessons cover subjects such as philosophy, ethics, anthropology, theology, science, history, and sociology, among others. Jeff has gone through the curriculum at least six times and said he has led several groups through the study, “twice at the Bank of Tampa and twice at a client’s office. To have that entering the workplace is not something I would have thought [of doing] a few years ago.” Those who work in a secular business place can relate to the fact that Christians have to be sensitive in sharing their faith with others. So how does he invite a bunch of “suits” to a Bible study? “I tell people straight up what we are doing and there might be something [a particular subject] that they have more of an interest in than another,” Jeff explained. He went on to say that The Truth Project brings together people from all walks of life in a very non-denominational atmosphere. When asked how he portrays his faith in the business place, Jeff’s answer was not surprising. The loving, compassionate, and respectful impression he exudes was affirmed in his response: “It’s more about how we’re being with people.” He went on to explain that he prefers to stay focused on being a person that glorifies God, “Maybe not with my words, but by my responses and by my tone and behavior.” The common saying, “Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary, use words,” holds true for Jeff. As Jeff pointed out, walking out his faith in daily life is key in the business world because nonbelievers are watching you. It’s not always about what you say - a believer’s behavior is a direct reflection of God. He is also involved with the Christian Business Leadership Connection group, which encourages business leaders to be mindful that God is with them in their everyday walk. Their “hope is to bridge the gap between the faith lessons learned Sunday morning and the faith walk that awaits them on Monday morning” (Christian Business Leadership Connection). Jeff purposes to carry Jesus with him everywhere he goes, including the workplace.

The Impact of Jesus Jesus has greatly impacted the Armstrong family over the last few years in so many ways. They saw God move mightily in their lives at a time when they needed Him most.

incorporating the Lord into planned out portions of the day. Jeff explained that Wally Armstrong, a dear friend of the family (no relation), put it to him like this: “[People] treat God like a compartment on a TV dinner tray and [they’ve] got God in His place…. [We] need to treat God as gravy in a chicken pot pie. He needs to be flowing and running over everything.” Jeff was led to get involved with Mulligan Life Ministries, which is based on the book “The Mulligan: A Parable of Second Chances” (coauthored by Wally) and the Mulligan Golf Club (www.mulligangolfclub.com). He sits on the board of the ministry that “exists as a resource to highlight God’s activity in the world through the game of golf. The MGC [Mulligan Golf Club] was developed by a network of friends who want to serve individuals, groups, and churches that are using golf as a platform for the mission of God” (www.facebook. com/MulliganGolfClub).

Jan shared, “I wake up every morning and ask God what He wants me to do because we have divine appointments.” She went on to say that she realized if we try to plan out our steps too much, we may miss what God has in store for us. Jan learned to let God take her through each day and to continually rely on Him to provide everything their family needs. Jeff spoke about the importance of keeping Christ at the center of their lives “and not just [as] a check mark.” Jeff continued, “[I] start the day slowly centered on Him in prayer and devotion and really in every thought of the day.” The Armstrongs’ walk with God has really been about allowing Him to lead them, as opposed to only

The effect of God’s love and peace in their hearts has been far-reaching in the Armstrongs’ daily lives as they continue to seek His direction. They have reached out to the community by helping various homeless ministries and utilizing their relationships with others to help support nonprofits and ministries. Jeff said, “Helping to put people together is a gift that God has blessed us with and a calling.” They enjoy connecting people with worthy causes that will impact the Kingdom of God. Perhaps even more importantly, Jeff shared, “I think our heart, at this point, has been to immerse ourselves in fellowship whether it be through Bible study, church, or different fellowship groups.”

God has given the Armstrong family an overwhelming joy to live out their calling. They have patiently persevered through the challenges this world brings and rest in the fact that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6). Jeff and Jan are faithful in prayer and boldly keep Jesus Christ at the center of their lives. Because of Jesus, they will have the opportunity to reunite with Harris in eternity…and for that they will forever be grateful. Jeff, Jan, and Alison’s true peace comes from our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ! Glory!

HEALTHY LIFE

Life is a Ball >>> BY CASIO JONES

we wait on God’s timing.” When we strive to make God our Master in all areas of our lives, we’ll find we have better balance. Consequently, we will feel more stable in this unstable environment called life. “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6, NIV). When you exercise your faith and surrender any issues you have to God, you become stronger spiritually. Likewise, the more time you spend with the exercise ball, the more you will increase your ability to maintain inner core strength and stability in all physical functions. So are you ready to try enjoying life with an exercise ball? Before you buy a ball, make sure it's the right size for your height. To test it, sit on the ball and make sure your hips are level or just slightly higher than the knees.

H

ave you ever been to the gym or watched an exercise program on TV and seen an oversized beach ball? The fitness industry calls this an “exercise ball.” Before it became a popular tool in the fitness industry, it was commonly used by physical therapists to help rehabilitate patients. Fitness experts now know it's one of the best ways to strengthen the abs and back, and to increase stability. Exercise balls challenge your body by putting it in an unstable or unbalanced environment. When you lie on the ball, your legs and abs instantly contract to keep you from falling off the ball. This contraction of smaller muscles helps strengthen your core muscles. Your “core” is the area of your body that holds almost every muscle group together and is involved in most of the movements you do on a regular basis. Once you are able to maintain stability on the ball, you can try adding an exercise (like a chest press or a crunch), and you've just increased the intensity of the movement. At times, we may feel that our own life is out of balance. We may question why we have stress and other issues occurring in our lives. When I had a problem trying to control my life, I found I needed to flex more faith. But, what is faith? This came to me: “Faith is the strength that keeps us on the path while

Weight training - Use the ball as a weight bench to add the muscles of your legs, butt, and abs to your regular chest press. Abdominal training - Doing crunches, twists, and other traditional exercises on the ball will make it more difficult by using more muscles in your core. Flexibility exercises - The ball is great for stretching and relaxing. SALVATION

Jesus said, “I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.” (John 10:9, NKJV)

T

here are many things in this world that can deceive us. Jesus touches on this in John 10 when He tells the parable of the sheep following their true shepherd. He explains that a good shepherd gives his life for his sheep (see John 10:11). The world may say there are several doors leading to God and an eternity in Heaven, but don’t be misled. When you look through that door, do you see the shepherd who gave His life for your sake? Jesus is the one and only Good Shepherd of God’s children and as He described in this Scripture: the doorway to a relationship with the Father. Jesus Himself tells us that He is the only way to salvation. Jesus is the only door that will lead us to God. Won’t you walk through it today?

Say this prayer aloud: Father God, I come before you in the Name of Jesus. Your Word says, “Whosoever shall call on the Name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21, KJV) and “if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9, NKJV). Father God, I believe your Word is truth and I stand on it now. Please forgive me for all my sins and unrighteousness. Today I make Jesus my Lord and Savior and I believe God raised Him from the dead, and He is seated at the right hand of the Father in Heaven. Father I ask that you fill me with your Holy Spirit to guide and teach me as I walk this earth and grow spiritually (Luke 11:13; Luke 12:12). I thank You for making a place for me in Your Kingdom, please guide me in the direction that will eternally please You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Personal Easter >>> BY TOMMY BURRUS

T “Those who had instigated the cry for Jesus' crucifixion now had an even bigger dilemma –Jesus Christ arose!”

here are many miracles in the Bible that demonstrate the power of God. God parted the Red Sea and made a path of deliverance for the Israelites (Exodus 14). He fed them in the wilderness with manna (Exodus 16). He provided food for a poor widow in Zarephath (1 Kings 17). Jesus restored sight to the blind (Matthew 9:30), loosed the tongue of the mute (Matthew 15:30), opened the ears of the deaf (Mark 7:34-35), healed leprosy (Matthew 8:3), cast out demons (Matthew 17:18), fed the multitudes (Matthew 14:19-21, 16:36-38), and raised the dead (Luke 7:11-15, 8:54-55; John 11:43-44).

reveals a transformation that empowered and emboldened them. These same people who previously hid in fear were publicly preaching about Jesus in Jerusalem, even in the temple and before the very people responsible for Christ's death! The disciples faced persecution, imprisonment, and even death to proclaim to others what they knew to be true—Jesus is risen from the dead. Consider Peter's sermon on the day of Pentecost. He answered those skeptics in Jerusalem by announcing that though Jesus died by crucifixion, God had raised Him from the dead. Peter said that he and the other disciples had seen Jesus after He had arisen.

This is far from a comprehensive list of Biblical miracles, but it is enough of a list to demonstrate that God is able to do anything. Of all the miracles of the Bible, none are as significant as the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, nor do the other miracles of the Bible have the direct, universal impact that His Resurrection has. The Resurrection is the most crucial event in the entirety of Scripture, indeed in all of human history. Without it, Christianity would never have been.

After healing the lame man at the temple in Acts 3, Peter explained that he and John had not performed this miracle by their own power but in the power of Jesus. Again, he reminds them that they had killed the Prince of life, but God had raised Jesus from the dead, and the disciples were witnesses of this fact (Acts 3:12-15). This angered the religious leaders especially because Peter and John preached that Jesus had risen (Acts 4:1-2).

After the Crucifixion, the apostles were frightened. They gathered behind closed doors in fear (John 20:19). If Jesus had not risen, His disciples would have eventually scattered in defeat (Acts 5:36-37). Instead, the Bible

What converted a zealous persecutor of Christians? What would make him the foremost preacher of Christianity? Paul's transformation came because he saw Jesus for himself (1 Corinthians 15:8). Before his

18   OverflowMag.com   April 2011

encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus, he was primed for a prestigious and powerful career as a ruler in Israel, but he abandoned all that to preach Christ. In fact, Paul gives a very reasoned declaration of the importance of the Resurrection in 1 Corinthians 15 that makes clear that the Resurrection of Jesus Christ is personal to each of us. And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep [died] in Christ are lost. If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men. (1 Corinthians 15:14, 17-19, NIV) Paul was saying that a faith that cannot give us hope beyond death is futile, and those who claim such an ineffectual faith are to be pitied. That is the perspective many people have toward faith: that the Bible is full of myths and legends for weak-minded people. The writers of the first century tell us that they were following the truth and not fables (2 Peter 1:16; Titus 1:4; 1 Thessalonians 2:13). Aside from their words, we also have a record of their actions. Taken together, it is clear that Jesus was raised from the dead. Unless we are alive when Jesus returns, we will die one day. Jesus' Resurrection robbed death of its power and threat (1 Corinthians 15:5458). We have the assurance of knowing that Jesus has conquered sin and death. Because Jesus has triumphed over death, there is victory for the believer even in death. When the Christian dies, his spirit separates from his body and is immediately with the Lord in heaven (2 Corinthians 5:8). In the Resurrection, God has promised that the dead will be raised and given a new body (1 Corinthians 15:22; 49-53 & 1 Thessalonians 4:14-17). The burial of the dead is like planting a seed. When the seed grows and comes out of the ground, it isn't that seed, but the plant that comes from the seed. Jesus will return with the spirits of those who have died in faith and reunite their spirit with a glorified body that will never get sick, become weak, or die. Jesus’ Resurrection guarantees that we will be raised from the dead. Jesus' credibility and the authority of the Gospel message also hinge upon His Resurrection. Jesus claimed that He would rise again from the dead (Matthew 12:40; Mark 8:31; John 2:19-21). This fact was well-known to His adversaries (Matthew 27:62-64). There can be no middle ground: either Jesus is the Son of God who died and rose again from the dead or He must be a fraud. Deuteronomy 18:22 and Jeremiah 28:9 teach that only those prophets whose predictions come true are from God. Those who had

instigated the cry for Jesus' crucifixion now had an even bigger dilemma—Jesus Christ arose! Despite their best efforts to secure the tomb, they were powerless to keep Jesus in the grave. Yet, confronted with irrefutable evidence of His Resurrection, they persisted in trying to cover it up rather than acknowledge Him as the Son of God. There is more evidence that Jesus lived, died, and rose again than for any other event in history. However, the evidence that matters most to me is the power of the Resurrection in my own life. Because Jesus has risen from the

dead, I am saved from my sin and have been given eternal life! Of all the miracles of Jesus, the one that touches me most personally is the Resurrection. I know the power of Jesus’ Word; the Scriptures are confirmed. I have a relationship with God. The Spirit of God dwells within me. I know that my work for God will last for eternity. Should I die or if I must bid farewell to those I love, even then I am victorious because our spirits will be with Jesus. Then when the trumpet sounds (1 Thessalonians 4:14-17), those believers who have died will come out of the grave to receive a new body! Glory!

The Legos of Life >>>BY: KERRY JOHNSON

“Look here, Cole! Look at this!”

“I have learned repeatedly that I shouldn’t – and can’t – live without God’s perfect life manual.”

Chase’s 3 year old body shook enthusiastically as he pointed at the picture on the small Lego box. Chase was certain Cole needed the picture in order to build the 100 piece white and yellow Lego airplane. Chase went so far as to shove the ripped cardboard box in Cole’s face. His 5 1/2 year old older brother pushed it away, annoyed. Cole wasn’t interested in pictures. His eyes were focused solely on the 24-page instruction manual that showed step-by-step how to build the Sea Plane. Without those specific directions Cole had no idea how to build the plane. The haphazard pile of Legos would remain just that, a shapeless pile of small blocks – full of potential but useless on their own. Our loving Creator gave us the best instruction manual ever written, the Bible. Its purpose is to bring life through Jesus, guide us in all wisdom and truth, and protect us from sin. “For the [W]ord of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12, NKJV). God’s Word will correct us and teach us about God’s people and Jesus’ ministry on earth. The Bible will redirect our selfish human nature

so that we are back in line with Jesus, who is "the author and finisher of our faith" (Hebrews 12:2, NKJV). As a child, Psalm 119:105 was written across my heart: “Your [W]ord is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path” (NKJV). God knew we would need His Word to guide our steps in this world, whether through the dark wilderness of our fears, over the rickety bridges of uncertainty and unbelief, or across lonely fields of pain and sorrow. During a difficult time in my life, God sent a lifeline – an older, wiser sister in Christ. She shared how helpful the Psalms had been during her own dark time. I began daily reading, praying over, and memorizing the powerful Scriptures found in the Psalms. The blessing and comfort provided by God’s Word was a life preserver during my rough storm. I have learned repeatedly that I shouldn’t – and can’t – live without God’s perfect life manual. Reading the Bible shifts my eyes off of me to our loving God, which enables me to look to Him for everything. “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17, NKJV). In order to be God’s vessels and be used for His purposes, we must be familiar with His Word and the experiences of His people who came before us: Moses’ anxieties, Abraham’s patience, Esther’s courage, Noah’s determination, Daniel’s faith, Peter’s insecurity, Paul’s passion, and John’s loyalty. Their relevant, imperfect examples of faith clearly show how man can be used by a perfect God. In Ephesians 6:11, we are told to “put on the whole armor of God.” This includes “the sword of the Spirit, which is the [W]ord of God” (Ephesians 6:17, NKJV). When we’re reading and learning from Scripture, we allow the Holy Spirit to use us for the furtherance of God’s Kingdom. He can use us to help others grow in their faith, minister in love to a hurting soul, or speak – and live – the Gospel of Jesus to the world. My day doesn’t feel right until I’ve opened that familiar leather cover and held the Bible tightly in my hands, poring over words that answer, guide, rebuke, and comfort. It’s my heart’s desire that my boys will follow the wisdom found in God’s Word. I pray for them that “…from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 3:15, NKJV). After all, when God’s Word is written across our soul, He can build something amazing from our lives - for His glory. Don’t stare aimlessly at pictures of what you hope your life will be or worry about the ripped open cardboard of your past. Instead, take God’s Holy Word in hand and build your life according to the best instruction manual ever written. Enjoy writing? Need a platform to share what God has put on your heart? In His Presence is Fullness of Joy Testimony Submitted By:

hen I think over my life, what resonates with me the most is God’s mercy, amazing love, forgiveness, and constant protection. I have lived two very different lives – the one I led before Christ (20 years ago) and the one I have led in Christ. The first is a testimony of God’s grace and intervention in a life full of bad choices. The second is a testimony of God’s never-ending love as I learned to make Him and His plan the priority in my life. During my childhood, we moved around a lot. My mother was always looking for that perfect place, and she found it in the West. At the time, I was almost 13 years old and had become aware of the marijuana used by other kids that lived near us. My mother was at work a lot and I was trying to figure out who I was. Since I did not have enough positive role models around me, I didn’t realize the good life was not the partying life. I was smoking pot and cigarettes, drinking, and popping pills by the summer before ninth grade. I became very rebellious and put myself in dangerous situations. Before ninth grade was over, my mother made a very hard decision. She took me to a drug program in Texas and headed

back west. Eventually, my mother moved to Texas, too, and left her perfect place in hopes of getting me straight. Unfortunately, I learned more about drugs there than I did about being sober. That was another bad choice on my part, certainly not a reflection of the program itself. Next, my mother put me in a Christian school. She had become close to the Pastor’s son and began seeking her own relationship with God. A wonderful couple ran the school. Although I was not ready to change, their love and acceptance made an impact on my life. My mother married a godly man and soon he and I were butting heads. I ran away and rented my own efficiency trailer. I was only 16, but a bar down the street hired me. I became quite the drunk. A man next door let me borrow his car while he was out of town. I found all sorts of pills in his home and took them.

stayed for 10 months. Praise God! I did graduate high school while I was there and got saved. When I went home, I got hooked up with some friends - not very good ones. I had turned 18 years old, so my mom couldn’t put me in any more treatment facilities. I thank God she did prior to that. I now see that kept me alive. As an adult though, it was time for the law to take over my parenting. I moved from house

and told me that I had to turn myself in for an old case. Since I was living in Florida, I had to drive back to Texas and turn myself in. But, I knew God was with me. People were praying for me. One family completely paid off my car so I wouldn’t lose it while I was gone. I made one of the most responsible decisions I ever had to make. I spent another 10 months in jail – the last time I would ever be locked up again.

Being in His presence is the place I love the most and from that place I can deal with and accomplish anything.

One night I was driving around in his car and decided to pick up some young men whose car was broken down at a gas station. They were directing me to where they could find help. As naïve as I was, we ended up in an empty cul-de-sac. One of the guys got out and came around to the driver’s side and smacked me, waking me up to the fact that their intentions were not good. I am so thankful that my Mom was saved by this time and understood the power of prayer. I was able to convince them to let me get out of the car. Once I was out, I was able to get away. I ran like crazy to the nearest house, which was a block away.

During this time of being on my own, I also tried to commit suicide. I ended up in the hospital getting my stomach pumped and then was committed to the psychiatric ward. I didn’t make any changes there either. My mother ended up driving me to Mississippi to put me in a lockdown girls’ home, a strict independent Baptist home. I remember hearing the door lock behind me. I thought, “What has she done now?” I didn't get any time with my mom to ask that question - they separated us right away. I looked and saw a girl in a knee-length skirt and dress shirt all neatly buttoned. We were in a bedroom and my suitcase was on the bed. She opened it up and we found a bunch of knee-length skirts and dress shirts. I thought, “My mom has been planning this for a while.” The girl informed me that I needed to take off my tight shorts and halter top, and put on one of the outfits my mother packed for me. It dawned on me that I was going to be there for quite some time. I

to house to hotel room. I was not only using methamphetamine, but also manufacturing and dealing it. I was a junkie. My life was packed with the wrong kind of excitement, the kind that leaves you alone, hurting, scared, in danger, and almost crazy. I have many stories of God’s unfailing love through this time. The Word of God says that the angels are ministering servants sent to those who will inherit salvation (Hebrews 1:14). They were busy with me, until I returned to the Lord. I did time in county jails and prisons on several occasions. I became like Psalm 107 describes I was so lost, thirsty, reeling around, and looking like death itself. I used to say, “Life turned its back on me.” I knew it was time for something to happen. The law put me back in jail. When I got out this time, I went into a Christian halfway house and came back to the Lord. My life was turning around. I was healing and developing a closer relationship with God. I remember going to a hotel with a friend to see an old drug connection. They were dealing and using, and I was sitting on the bed soaking up the Word of God. I was so hungry for more of Jesus, and I soon realized that my company had to change. I moved to Florida and spent a year learning how to live life, hold a job, have a bank account, and be responsible. Then one day my lawyer called

While I was in jail, I grew in the Lord and ministered to other inmates. I also made a good decision to fill out college applications so I could enroll when I was released from prison. After I got out, I began studying to be a counselor. I enjoyed college and loved my new life. I ran a jail ministry doing counseling and preaching to people in the same place I had been. My life improved even more when I got married at 30 and had my first child a year later. I then opened my own counseling practice and a Christian counseling training program. Life has not been easy; however, there is no pull to the old lifestyle anymore. The Lord has set me free. I have found that fullness of joy is in God’s presence. Being in His presence is the place I love the most and from that place I can deal with and accomplish anything. Now, I can truly understand how to process and apply the Word of God in my daily life, and I am empowered to help others to do the same. The process of growing up in the Lord has never been dull, and I thank Him so much for never, ever letting go of me.

Forgiven Future >>> BY CHRIS CHERP

T

hink back to the day you originally confessed your sins and received Jesus as your Lord and Savior. What a great day it was! All of Heaven was celebrating because of your decision. This is the day when every believer realizes that all of our past sins, no matter how big, are forgiven. We sigh with relief. But, what about our future sins? Before this question is answered, it’s important to have a clear understanding of God's grace. "[E]ven when we were dead in trespasses (sin), [He] made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)” (Ephesians 2:5, NKJV). Through Jesus Christ and His free gift of grace and righteousness, we are no longer captive to sin, and we can reign in life (Romans 5:17). However, it's impossible to reign in anything if we are burdened with the guilt of past, present, and future mistakes (sin). Grace is unmerited, unearned, and undeserved favor. We need God’s grace because we have all sinned (Romans 3:23). Accepting this truth draws us closer to God and His amazing goodness. How we believe determines how we receive. A lot of believers think that God is angry with them for their inability to be perfect. He knows we are far from perfect; that's why He sent Jesus to die for us and be our representative as our eternal High Priest. When God looks at you, He is seeing you through Jesus and His perfect work at the cross. So, what about righteousness? Think of it like this - when we are no longer sin conscious but righteousness conscious, we are cleansed from all guilt. We won't feel

24   OverflowMag.com   April 2011

burdened or ashamed to be in the presence of our Lord or fellow believers. We won't fear being judged when we go to church. We will know that we are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus because all of our sins are forgiven (Romans 3:22, 1 John 1:7). God has already judged all of our sins at the cross (Colossians 2:13). He is no longer angry with us for anything nor will He ever be again. In Isaiah 54:9 (NIV) God said, "To Me this is like the days of Noah, when I swore that the waters of Noah would never again cover the earth. So now I have sworn not to be angry with you, never to rebuke you again." This doesn't give us license to sin. When we really begin to comprehend the magnitude of this truth, we won't want to sin. The relationship between God and man under the New Covenant differs so much compared to the Old Covenant. An analogy would be a boss who always demands things from you that are very difficult to live up to and worst of all he never offers any assistance. This is an illustration of a demanding God that is continually pointing a finger at you, requiring a perfect sin-free life. Only One was able to do that and, praise Jesus, when He fulfilled the requirements of the law at the cross - it was paid in full and settled forever. Now think of a boss who instructs you to do some things that are challenging and sometimes almost impossible. However, the great thing about this boss is that he assists you with each step just to be sure you have everything needed to get the job done well. This is an illustration of a loving God that is continually seeing us in the perfection of Jesus

thus extending unearned favor toward us in all areas of our lives. Out of these two bosses which would you go the extra mile for? It’s the one who is always there to help you with anything he asks you to do. Seeing the nature of the second boss is similar to seeing God’s love and grace for us under the New Covenant. It wasn't too long ago when I received the revelation that all of my sins past, present, and future are forgiven by the blood of Jesus through His perfect, completed work at the cross (Colossians 1:14). It's not a matter of continually getting on our knees to beg for forgiveness; it's a matter of understanding that we confess our sins because we are already forgiven. The beautiful thing about the New Covenant is that even when we forget to confess a sin we are still forgiven through the blood of Jesus. I know it can be challenging to understand that all of our future sins are already forgiven, but remember God is not subject to time. He is “the Beginning and the End” (Revelation 22:13). He sees things in their entirety. All of our sins were covered at the cross; otherwise, none of them would have been covered because they were all in the future. When Jesus died on the cross, over 2,000 years ago, we were over 60 generations away from being born. Lift your head up and begin to reign in life. Stop listening to lies from the devil that God is angry with you. He's not; all of our sins, including our future sins, are forgiven. Begin to walk in the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus and enjoy His gifts of peace and joy. Before you know it you'll be receiving blessings from God you didn't even ask for. Rejoice! Glory!

One Client’s story If you are interested in highlighting your business or ministry, please contact Chris@OverflowMag.com.

It is a joyous occasion at Oasis when a client chooses life for her unborn child. In some cases, however, the client leaves undecided or leaves saying she needs to abort. This was the situation with a client who came last January. Upon seeing the result of her pregnancy test, she explained to her client educator why she could not give

26   OverflowMag.com   April 2011

birth to this baby. She was in a bad relationship and had no job or income. She also shared that she had chosen abortion previously and stated she had “figured out how to just get through it.” In her mind, at that time, abortion was the only answer. She did not give us permission to contact her. We prayed for her again and again. Just imagine the happiness Oasis felt when seven months later, the client walked through the door and she was still pregnant. She had made an appointment at the abortion clinic and went for the procedure. However, once she got in the waiting room, she could not go through with it. She recalled the words that were spoken to her at Oasis and decided then to choose life. She has now attended our Bible study, participated in EWYL, and received material help for the baby. We just thank God for answered prayer!

SCRIPTURES I STAND ON

Luke 4:18-19 (NKJV) "The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD." This verse inspires me to live like Jesus, and to do the things He did. I love to claim this verse over my life on a daily basis. MY ROCK

SCRIPTURES I STAND ON

Ephesians 6:1-4 (NIV) “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother’-which is the first commandment with a promise-‘that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.’ Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” I picked this verse because I know that God said children should obey their parents since they know what’s right for them.
