Dear Friends, This month is special for me as I celebrate Mother’s Day with my wonderful husband and two children. As I gaze into our children's beautiful faces, I am reminded of God’s great love for us. He has given us the precious gift of children, and I am so thankful to be a mother. When you become a parent, you receive a special joy unlike any other, and an overwhelming love in your heart for the gift you are holding in your arms. As I looked into the eyes of my children for the first time, I was overtaken with emotion. How could I love someone so much that I just met? It makes me think about my mom and how she must have felt with the birth of each child. Even with five children, she always found a way to express her love and spend time with each of us. When I reflect on my mom, I think of unconditional love, affection, kindness, and compassion. She always put our needs before her own. Thank you, Mom, for all you have done and for all the love you showered upon us. I aspire to be a mommy just like you. See our special Magnify Him section on page 8. This is a tribute to all of the wonderful mothers in order to thank them for their love and sacrifice for their children. God’s love is truly magnified through our mothers. You’ll also be interested in reading Tommy Burrus’ article, “Wonderful Mother,” on page 18. Now step back and think about how God must feel towards us, His children. I encourage you to meditate on the great, unconditional love He has for us all. I take comfort in knowing that
we have a God who loves us so much. When we have children, we get a glimpse of how amazing that love is. God sent His only Son to stand in our shoes because of His love for us. If you don’t know Jesus as your Savior, go to our salvation section on page 17 and accept God’s love for you today! The school year is almost over. Are you looking for a summer camp where your children can be active? Our Spotlight features Tony and Nyree Bland of PROtential Sports. MOTHER'S DAY SPECIAL
We want to honor our godly mothers this Mother’s Day with memories and praise reports that reflect the immense impact of their spiritual influence and loving kindness in the lives of their children. We will never know the countless hours they have prayed on our behalf, and we are eternally thankful for those prayers. Thank you mothers for your words of wisdom, tender love, gentle corrections, and prayers of intercession.
Meaningful Memories of Mom When I was growing up one of the most meaningful memories I have of my mom was her never-ending faith in whom I would become. I had challenges with reading. I would re-read the same line over and over again when reading a book. It became so annoying to me that I just didn't want to read anymore, and I didn't. Fortunately my mom never gives up. She wrote wisdom, knowledge, and understanding Scriptures on note cards and came in my room one day and said, "I want you to read these cards out loud every morning when you wake up and every evening before you go to sleep." Today I am a Christian and an avid reader who has a Chemical Engineering degree. Over 25 years later, I still say the Scriptures my mommy gave me when I was a loser in my own mind. Thank you, Mom, for helping me to become the man I am today. >>>Chris
Richly Blessed by God My mom is one of the strongest and most beautiful women I know. Through all of her own insecurities and troubles, she has always made me a priority in her life. From her I learned that I am capable of anything, and that God is the foundation and the strong tower of our lives. Many years of memories make it difficult to pick only one, but now that I am grown up and about to be married myself, I have to say that my most cherished moments with my mom are the Starbucks and shopping trips we've taken ever since high school. While you may not have always had all the answers, Mom, I want to thank you for being there for me and making sure I had everything I needed. God has richly blessed me by giving me a mom like you. I love you, Mama! >>>Alex
My Mom I have always been a “Daddy’s Girl.” My sister and I came into our parents’ lives at the same time when they adopted us. I bonded with my dad, and my sister bonded with my mom. On December 23, 2009 the bond with my mom got stronger while we were at my first ultrasound appointment. I will never forget the shriek as she shouted, “There are two of them!” For my Mom’s 50th birthday, I planned a special surprise and took her and my grandmother to my 20-week appointment where we would find out the sex of the babies. Our special day was turned upside down as I was rushed into emergency surgery to make sure my baby boys were not born too early. My mom spent the entire day by my side, holding my hand through the scariest time of my life. The doctors put me on bed rest from that point on, and my mom was there taking care of me every day as my husband went to work. Two weeks later I was admitted to the hospital for the duration of the pregnancy. My mom drove to Brandon every day to sit with me and keep me company. For seven weeks she put everything on hold to be with me.

On May 29, 2010 my life changed forever. I became a mom to two beautiful boys. They came 11 weeks early and had to be in the NICU. For seven weeks, my mom drove me to Brandon every day so we could be with the boys. My husband worked nights the first week they were home. Once again, my mom was there; she stayed with me through my first official week of being a mom. She continues to put everything on hold when I need her. When my sister and I were adopted I did not understand how a mom could love two children at the same time. Now, being a mom to twins, I understand it! Your heart just gets bigger! I love my mom very much and we are very close now. I know I would not have made it through the last year without her. She is the mom I aspire to become to my boys! >>>Miranda Faulkner-Smith

Honor Your Mother & Live Long The little things we do to honor our mothers are pleasing to God. A mother’s love is a glimpse at God’s love for us, and His expectation of how we should treat one another. Mom, you are blessing. You held my hand when I was scared. You kissed the hurts away when I fell. You hugged me when I was rejected. You made me feel loved, important, and safe. You taught me to have integrity and care for others. Mom, you taught me the meaning of love. Thank you for putting me first so I could learn to be a father with compassion. I see our God’s nature; He is a God of love. He teaches us about love starting with our mothers who are selfless. The very instinct of a mother is to put the newborn baby first; the child is the most important thing she has to take care of, and that bond is powerful. The Fifth Commandment tells us to honor our parents (see Exodus 20:12). This commandment includes a promise to God’s children who are obedient: “That all may be well with you and that you may live long on the earth” (Ephesians 6:3, AMP). Step back to think about what God is saying to us. Jesus also gave us a commandment to love one another. “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another” (John 13:34, NIV). Jesus asked the disciple John to care for his mother Mary when they stood at the foot of the Cross (John 19:26-27).
the seeds of God’s love in me. Envision the acts of your mother when you read God’s definition of love out loud: “Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance” (1 Corinthians 13:4-7, NLT). God is the Father of Love and the Creator of your mother, a wonderful gift. God promises to make things well for you when you honor your parents. God, thank You for creating our mothers who instruct us and love us. Happy Mother’s Day! >>>Marc (Son, Husband, & Father)
Have you ever visualized the kind of love God has for you? I appreciate my mom for teaching me about love by living out Christ’s example in her walk with me. I see my mom being my biggest fan at each juncture of my life. She planted
A Mother's Love My four siblings and I were blessed with the kindest mother. My memories growing up are filled with nothing but love and compassion. She was there to welcome us home, prepare our meals, attend every sporting event, teach us, console us, and love us every single day. Our mother exhibits selflessness on a daily basis. As adults, we are even more aware of her constant sacrifices for her children. Her love for her children and grandchildren reminds me of God’s love for us: she keeps no record of wrongs, she is always patient, she is kind, she is not self-seeking, and she is not easily angered (1 Corinthians 13). I have never met a more generous and gentle person than my mother. Her love for us is unconditional and never ending, just like God’s. More than any person on this earth, my mother has shown me how to live a life led by Christ – not always by her words, but by her actions. Thank you, Mommy, for showing me what it truly means to love. >>> Amanda

Destination Irrelevance >>> BY JOHN FAULKNER
ALL ABOARD! THE TRAIN IS LEAVING AND IT'S STANDING ROOM ONLY!
“The key to understanding good stewardship starts with acknowledging that everything belongs to God.”
Irrelevance is a popular destination with this business class; that’s located halfway between Insignificant and Inconsequential. On this train, you will surely enjoy the ride as you sit shoulder to shoulder with all of the powerful people. You can bet that the people in the aisle seats will be typing away on their smartphones, while the people with the window seats marvel at the view. There are all sorts of new cars parked in the driveways of fancy houses as you approach the town. These are the trophies of the hard-fought battles and the rewards for endless hours of pounding the rock. As you pull into the station and step off the train, you can’t help but think, “It doesn’t get any better than this!” Sadly, for a lot of business leaders, it really doesn’t get any better. Somewhere along the way, the lure of pursuing earthly treasures causes many people with good intentions to arrive at unintended destinations of irrelevance. God’s Word cautions us in Matthew 6:19 (NIV), “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves can break in and steal.” With all of the world’s trappings, from things that make us feel good to things that give us credibility and stature, it’s easy to get caught up in it all and head in the wrong direction. Let’s break down the verse and get a better perspective. In the first part of the verse, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,” we discover that it’s not about storing up treasures, but about where we store them. We can interpret from this verse that we are to store our treasures in Heaven. The second part of the verse, “where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves can break in and steal,” also reveals the type of treasures we are to invest
10 OverflowMag.com May 2011
in – treasures which are beyond loss. This would include eternal rewards for Kingdom work and giving, and for leading others to the saving grace of Jesus Christ. Will the things that we invest in stand the test of time? As responsible stewards of God’s resources, we have to constantly evaluate our decision-making processes and ask ourselves the following question: Are my efforts making a positive impact on the Kingdom or will they be rendered insignificant in the final analysis? The key to understanding good stewardship starts with acknowledging that everything belongs to God. Whether our resources are plentiful or limited, we will someday be judged on our faithfulness with what we have been given. Jesus said: Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? And if you have not been trustworthy, with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own? (Luke 16:10-12, NIV) What we do with our resources reveals a lot about the condition of our heart and the direction we are headed. Will we find ourselves on a train to Irrelevance? Or will we be focusing on God and what eternally matters? How important will our money be to the One who owns the cattle on a thousand hills? There is a little known destination located just a change of heart away called “Significance,” which is where God desires us to be.

The PROtential for Success >>>BY AMANDA WRIGHT
P
ROtential Sports is a unique after-school program and summer camp. Founders Tony and Nyree Bland shared their uncommon approach to children and sports. Tony said, “We like to think that all of the kids have professional potential – not just in sports.” He explained that they hope to instill skills that transcend sports and will be applicable to every facet of life. Integrating Christ-like characteristics into a sports program for children came naturally to these former professional athletes. They enjoy the correlation between their spiritual walk and athletics. Proverbs 22:6 (NKJV) says, “Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.” The principles taught at PROtential Sports will long outlast a child’s youth. These seeds sown will undoubtedly generate fruit in later years and produce well-rounded individuals who display respect, kindness, and compassion toward others.
PROS Tony was raised in St. Petersburg by his evangelist grandmother. She was also a social worker and her personal mission in life was to bring people to Jesus. Tony spent much of his youth in the church and explained that because of his background, his foundation is deeply rooted in the Spirit. He went on to play football and attend Florida A&M University, where he majored in Political Science. After earning his degree, he walked onto the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings as a free agent where he played for four years. He also spent a little time with the Tampa Bay Storm before retiring from the game.
The Birth of PROtential Tony wasn’t pleased with being cut from the NFL. He thought that God desired for him to continue playing in the NFL, but it didn’t work out. Consequently, Tony wanted nothing to do with football. He then switched to the mortgage business. “I applied all of the same principles of sports to mortgages,” Tony said. He worked hard and was blessed financially; however, deep in his spirit, he knew God was calling him in another direction. He just didn’t know what it was yet. Tony began to realize that he needed to let go of any bitterness he felt towards football and be thankful that God had blessed him with the opportunity to even play in the NFL at all. Tony recognized that God had gifted him with his athletic ability for a reason and was preparing him for an even greater career of impacting the lives of children. Tony followed the Lord’s leading and left the mortgage business. Nyree explained, “God blessed him with a vision to do a football camp,” in the summer of 2003. His good friend and old teammate, Brad Johnson, came out along with other players and speakers to encourage and motivate the kids. The three-week camp was overwhelmingly supported by the community and 300 kids attended. During this first camp, Tony said, “That’s where I found out that I can actually speak to kids and influence them and inspire them to do better.” More recently he’s had the opportunity to speak to kids at schools and share with them how sports have affected his life. After the success of the summer camp, Nyree said, “People were [asking] what are we going to do next and God directed us to start an after-school sports program.”
“Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6 (NKJV)
While playing in the NFL, Tony met his wife Nyree during an off season. A couple of years later they were married. As a youth, Nyree played tennis and was ranked #1 in North Carolina. She traveled around the nation competing against other top ranked junior players. However, Nyree was sidelined early on in her professional career due to a serious back injury. This led her to the fulfilling profession of a Tennis PRO, teaching the game she was devoted to as a young woman. “She enjoys inspiring children to visualize dreams and go after them” (www.protentialsports.com).
Making a Difference PROtential Sports is more than a youth sports program; it’s making a difference in lives of children well beyond the physical activity of athletics. The purpose of the program is to teach valuable principles alongside the sports, such as discipline, how to listen, respect for others, teamwork, leadership, and encouragement, among others. Tony said, “You don’t have to be a great athlete to succeed here.” Nyree added, “We are trying to teach life lessons through sports: patience, honesty, perseverance, integrity, character, being excited for someone else’s victory, and good sportsmanship.”

“They coach the children on how to appreciate teammates, and show respect to the coach by listening and executing requests.”
As former professional athletes, the Blands understand that characteristics like these need to be taught and preferably at an early age. They coach the children on how to appreciate teammates, and show respect to the coach by listening and executing requests. It’s not about competition. PROtential Sports is different than other sports programs in that their main goal is to teach these guiding values over the technique of a specific game. The Blands and their coaches are speaking into the kids and showing them what sports have done in their lives beyond their athletic careers. Tony explained that many athletes later in life will accredit their success to an earlier coach who made an impact on them. “The program is aimed to target these moments and really get our coaches to relate with the kids,” he said. The coaching staff are all athletes who have played a sport in high school, in college, or professionally. Tony and Nyree hire coaches that have a passion for sports and knowledge about the coach-player relationship. Tony explained that he oversees the coaches and teaches them the principles of coaching. The coaches aren’t necessarily drilling the kids on technique, but rather teaching those useful principles in an athletic environment. The kids aren’t the only ones impacted by this program; the coaches are also positively affected by their jobs. They are required “to be on the straight and narrow,” as Tony put it. They have to be disciplined and stay out of trouble to remain a coach at PROtential Sports. They become role models to these children and have to live their lives in a way that reflects the values they teach.
Sports Programs The after-school program is offered to children ages 5 to 12 between the hours of 2:30 and 6:30 p.m. This program started with only 3 kids; however, Tony and Nyree stayed faithful to
what the Lord had called them to do. The next year they had 10 kids and the next 20. Eight years later, the program now teaches over 100 kids each week during the school year with a staff of 12-16 coaches. The after-school program offers two to three different sports a day, as well as a snack and rest time. The children receive a lot of individual attention because they are put into small groups for the drills and exercises. PROtential Sports is a basic camp that provides the opportunity for the kids to learn about most sports. “We do soccer, football, lacrosse, basketball, tennis, and golf. We want the kids to be able to touch almost every sport,” Tony said. The sports are set up in drills, rather than games, so they can learn the fundamentals of each sport. During each drill, a child is performing and the rest of the group watches and cheers them on. This set-up also gives the coaches an opportunity to individually instruct each child, which is not possible while playing a game. Tony explained, “You can’t stop in the middle of a game and do a teaching point or a lesson on how to show sportsmanship. In a drill you can control it and stop the [activity and talk with the kids].” During the summer PROtential Sports sees up to 250 kids, ages 5 to 15, with a coaching staff of 20-24. The camp runs from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Tony described that a typical day at camp begins with the children being greeted and given an inspirational talk for the day. The coaches fire the children up and make sure they are ready to listen and work together as a team. “We rotate through the morning (from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.) with three different sports. Everything on the hour,” Tony said. Within that hour, 15 minutes are spent discussing the sport: history, currents events, and how to play. The children are given a chance to ask questions and the coaches explain the drill. After that, they spend 30 minutes doing the activity and the remaining 15 minutes allow for a water break and
Success with God The Blands strive to be good examples for others and share Jesus through their actions with the coaches, the children, and even the parents. They don’t push their beliefs on anyone, but rather show the love of God in whatever they do. Both Nyree and Tony give credit to God alone for the achievements of PROtential Sports. In the past eight years their business has seen growth and success beyond what they could have imagined. They can clearly see, now, the path that the Lord laid out for them and how He was training them up for this assignment. Helping to mold children into respectful young people is rewarding enough in itself, but to have a successful business, too, they are blessed beyond measure. Nyree shared Luke 14:11 and said, “I feel like we should always stay humble because it is all God’s anyway, and I would much rather God exalt us than [doing it ourselves].” The Bible clearly tells us that God honors those who humble themselves and rely solely on Him (see also James 4:6, 10).
rest time. With each rotation, the children work with a different coach. This structure keeps the kids from losing interest and getting burned out. “I wanted my program to be a little bit more disciplined and structured so the kids get something out of it,” Tony shared. They have lunch and a break at noon. Then, they resume with another sports rotation at 3:00 p.m. The coaches are able to share with parents which sports their children are excelling in or where their interests are so they can possibly pursue that sport in the future. PROtential Sports also offers weekend leagues for soccer, basketball, and NFL flag football. This allows for the kids to show what they have learned. Ready to sign your child up? You can find PROtential Sports in five Tampa Bay area communities, including Heritage Isles, Seven Oaks, Grand Hampton, Tampa Palms, and Bridge Water. Tony shared, “I like the concept of the community kids playing with each other.” Through PROtential Sports, the Blands are allowing children to build relationships with each other where they live. Most of these communities are gated and provide a safe and secure environment for the children to play and enjoy the sporting activities.
Tony and Nyree continue to rely on God not only for the success of their business, but also for each day that a child steps onto the field. Tony explained that he is a strong believer in prayer. “The power of prayer is really a motor in this business,” Tony shared. Each morning he prays over the day and the activities. Tony does a large amount of the set-up for each field and he uses this quiet time to pray over the field as he works. Then later in the day he gets to see the children playing; they are happy and healthy. “It’s like the prayers are being answered immediately,” Tony said.

Nyree has some words of wisdom for young aspiring athletes: “Do not quit; work hard and it will pay off.” Tony shared a Scripture that his grandmother taught him: “Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord” (Colossians 3:20, NKJV). He explained that if a child cannot learn to listen to their parents, they will have a hard time later in life with other authority figures. He also quoted Proverbs 13:18 (NIV), “He who ignores discipline comes to poverty and shame, but whoever heeds correction is honored.” Tony explained, “Discipline is the #1 secret to success. Once you learn this through sports, you can apply it to all parts of your life.” The Lord has blessed this couple with a business that they enjoy running. The love they have for people, and especially children, is obvious, and this love is why they will continue to thrive and be successful. God’s hand is over PROtential Sports, and your child would be truly blessed to experience such a wonderful program. Glory!

HEALTHY LIFE
No Guilt
>>> BY CASIO JONES
Y “Guilt is a tool Satan uses to keep us trapped. However, God forgives us for any mistake we make.”
ou had a bad weekend. You fell off the healthy lifestyle wagon. You ate a lot of junk food and didn’t follow your exercise program. Whatever you do, please, please…DO NOT JUMP ON THAT SCALE! It will only bring more attention to your mistake rather than helping you to find a solution. Instead, you should jump right back into “the game.” This is now a mental battle. Guilt will try to creep in and keep you trapped in the past and unable to focus on the positive steps you have made. Athletes often face this type of battle. Professional baseball players know they shouldn’t focus on their last strike out. Their next time up to bat, they must visualize themselves hitting a triple or a homerun. If they focused on their last at bat, they would be likely to strike out again. Like athletes, we need to concentrate on making the next play count! Satan desires for you to dwell on your past mistakes and wants to prevent you from reaching your fullest potential. Guilt is a tool Satan uses to keep us trapped. However, God forgives us for any mistake we make. We need to follow God’s lead and forgive ourselves. With forgiveness, we are free from guilt. We can focus on the hope of tomorrow and see new opportunities as they approach us. So, whenever you feel like you have missed your mark, or you have fallen off of the healthy lifestyle wagon, just remember to dust yourself off and get back into the game. In Proverbs 24:16, we learn that even if “a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again” (NIV). The righteous man uses God’s strength to get back up and keep fighting the

good fight! You can reduce your chances of falling by having a plan of action in place. Here are some great tips to help you move steadily towards your goal: 1.
Find a training partner to help keep you accountable for showing up.
2.
Pack a bag with your gym clothes and tennis shoes and keep it in your vehicle. This ensures that you will never forget them at home…again!
3.
Realize that fitness and staying active are not goals with a finish line. Staying active should be a part of your healthy lifestyle FOREVER.
4.
Aim to break a sweat each and every day. You do not have to commit to a 30 minute, 60 minute, or even a 90 minute workout or run. Instead, just try to break a sweat by doing something every day.
5.
Make your calendar your new friend. Each day that you successfully workout and complete a regimen, mark it on your calendar.

esus was sent to take our place. He is God’s plan to bring redemption to mankind through His death and Resurrection. The one man who walked this earth blameless and free of sin bore our sins on the cross – He was literally in our shoes. In Romans 3:23-25 Paul explains that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (NKJV), but Christ redeemed us through His Blood. He is the eternal sacrifice for our sins. This means that in the eyes of Father God, Jesus satisfied all of our wrong doing. The Bible clearly tells us that this gift of salvation is for everyone, every person, every nation, including the lowly, the weak, and even the thief who was crucified next to Jesus (see Luke 23:42-43). When Jesus rose on the third day after His death, he visited His disciples and told them “that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His Name to all nations” (Luke 24:47, NKJV). This means that salvation is for you, too. No matter what you have done, God has already made a way to wash away those sins and welcome you into His Kingdom. No one is beyond the reach of salvation because Jesus is the Savior of the whole world. Will you let Jesus stand in your shoes? Will you accept Him as your Lord and Savior?
“And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin.”
1 John 3:5 (NKJV)
SALVATION
Say this prayer aloud: Father God, I come before you in the Name of Jesus. Your Word says that “whoever calls on the Name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21, NKJV) and “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9, NKJV). Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me. It is because of Your love that You don't want me to be condemned and punished for my sins. Thank You for sending Your beloved Son, Jesus, to die for me on the cross. Jesus took my sins, penalties, and all my curses and in return gave me His blessing, righteousness, and favor. He got what I deserved so I can receive what He deserves - all good things! Jesus' blood washes me clean from every sin (past, present, and future). On the third day, Jesus rose from the dead and conquered death. Father, I thank You that when You look at me, You choose to no longer remember my sins and that You see me in all the beauty and righteousness of Jesus. Holy Spirit, fill me to overflowing and lead me through this life - thank you, Father. In Jesus' Name, Amen!
Wonderful Mother >>> BY TOMMY BURRUS
“Although she always made it clear that she loved us, there was never a question of who was in charge.”
T
his past week, my teenage daughter received her learning permit to drive. On our first experience with her driving, I was reminded that my mother taught me to drive. Dad made me nervous, but Mom was patient and clear with her instructions. Buckled in next to my daughter, I patted her arm and told her she was doing great. It was the same encouragement my mom gave me. God blessed me with a wonderful mother. When I think of her, I think of Proverbs 31 where King Lemuel records instruction given to him by his mother. My own mother had to take responsibility to be the spiritual leader of our home. We had prayer and devotions together, and she took us to church and Sunday School. We would sit in the same pew with my grandmother and my aunt and uncles. This reminds me of Timothy, whose grandmother Lois and mother Eunice taught him the Scriptures from the time he was a child (2 Timothy 3:15). Their examples of true faith (2 Timothy 1:5) had a profound impact on Timothy, as the faith of my grandmother and mother have had upon me.

My mom was always interested in my spiritual development. In fact, it was my mother who explained salvation to me and led me to accept Jesus as my Savior. When I would start to deviate, Mom would ask me, "Would Jesus do that?" At the time, I must confess that I wasn't always eager to consider my actions in light of what Jesus would do; I was far more interested in what the popular crowd or my friends were doing. Although my mother had a demanding career, she made time to color with us, or to go outside and ride bikes and go fishing with us. Even then, she didn't blur the role between buddy and parent. Although she always made it clear that she loved us, there was never a question of who was in charge. As an adult, she and I still have a very close relationship, but now it is more of a friendship. My mother has also taught me the value of sacrifice in love and in ministry. When my dad's mother was diagnosed with cancer, my mother brought her into our home and cared for her. Years later, my mom brought my father's aunt home and took care of her as well. As I write this, she is with another family member who is going through a tough time.
My mother has always been concerned about others, especially when it came to salvation. My paternal grandmother asked my mom to witness to my dad and his siblings so that they could know Jesus, too. Mom always found a way to share the Gospel with them when we would visit. At times, she would bring the Bible out and show them how to be saved. My father and an aunt and uncle eventually did come to know the Lord and serve Him! Mom witnessed to neighbors and friends and acquaintances so that they would receive Jesus. Although she didn't personally lead them all to Christ, she planted the seeds of faith. She has also been influential in her church community. She taught Sunday School and really cared about the children in her class. She taught Vacation Bible School and even picked up kids to take to church. The more that I think about it, I learned as much from her about ministry as I did from Bible college. When I was a teenager, I said that I would not raise my kids the way I was raised. Now I have to smile when I say something to my own children that my mother once said to me. I'm pleased to echo the wisdom of my mother. It makes me think that I must be on the right track. My desire is to pass on to my own children that rich heritage of faith that I received. As a father of a teen and a preteen, I don't always get it right. My mom didn't always get it right, either, because she isn't perfect. No parent is perfect. We make mistakes. As parents, we need to realize that God has entrusted us with a job that we can't do without His help. A few months ago, our family bought a puppy from a pet store. With the puppy, we got an envelope full of paperwork that included his genealogy and health certificate and a threepage document of how to parent our pooch. The document included information about how to play, how to potty train, and when and how to feed him. My wife and I each read over the instructions carefully, and, even now, we remind each other and our children of those instructions when it becomes clear that one of us is deviating from them. Consequently, we have a content canine, although he is certainly not perfect. In the same way, God has provided His Word to guide us in parenting our children. He has also promised to never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). He has given us His Spirit to guide us (John 14:26). I thank the Lord for my mom. She didn't have all
the answers. She wasn't always perfect, but she followed her Heavenly Father and His Word. As King Lemuel said: Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: "Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all." Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Give her
the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate. (Proverbs 31:28-31, NIV)

God's Beautiful Garden >>> BY STEPHANIE A. DAWSON
T
hose who have known me for a long time know that, in the past, I really disliked gardening – although if you see my garden now you would not believe me. My mother can bear witness today because she has always enjoyed plants and flowers and would often give me flowers to say “hello,” “thanks,” or “happy birthday.” Unfortunately, after only a few days they would die due to neglect; I failed to give them even the slightest drop of water. Recently, I learned that we are all like gardens, waiting to blossom in our season of life. However, before that can happen effectively, the Gardener (our Creator God) has to water (or feed) us with His Word and sometimes even prune us – that is cut back or remove dead matter from our lives in order for us to grow. Thankfully, there are no more dead plants! That was all in the past and I have grown. Now I really enjoy gardening. During the summer months, I spend a considerable amount of time making my garden look presentable. What really amazes me, however, are the weeds; they seem to have no problem growing, even without my TLC. They grow so quickly and everywhere, even in the crevices of driveways. No matter how hard I try to stop them, or how fast I pull them up, the weeds just seem to keep on growing and spreading all over the lawn and flower beds. I have even resorted to spraying all kinds of weed killers and potions on the driveway and the offending sprouts—but still they grow!
This reminds me of the parable of the sower in Mark 4. The seed sown is God’s Word and if we allow it to fall on thorny ground, the weeds - like the cares of this world - will choke us and prevent us from receiving God’s Word (Mark 4:18-19). A good comparison would be the Parrotfeather, an eye-catching water plant with feather-like leaves and small white flowers. Despite its attractive appearance, this plant is actually a destructive weed that forms a thick covering over lakes and ponds. It overruns native plants, thus damaging the natural ecosystem. Sin can be just like that in our lives. It can come in seemingly beautiful disguises but only chokes our walk with God.
spending time in the Bible. We need to feed on God’s Word and grow with the Living Water of life that God provides.
In Mark 4:13-20, Jesus was talking about how nonbelievers receive the Gospel but His words also apply to Christ-followers. Sometimes when we read God’s Word, our minds are taken up with troubles, worries, and fears. The pressure of things to be done today and concerns about tomorrow’s decisions are “weeds” that can choke the Word and make it unprofitable. How many times have you opened your Bible to read, or sat down to pray, and other thoughts enter your mind to the point of total distraction? To control the weeds, we must ask God to quiet our hearts and minds so we can pay attention to Him. Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God...” (NKJV). We need to get down on our knees and prayerfully pull out the weeds growing in our lives. Our sprays and weed killers come in the form of prayer and
This couplet sums it up neatly:

As a young Christian, my Bible was signed by some friends and one of them wrote: “This Book will keep you from sin OR sin will keep you from this Book.” Don’t let the weeds (sin or the cares of this world) keep you from the Book of Life. When I refuse to be distracted by the weeds, I can turn my attention to the beauty of the garden and the satisfaction it brings. In the same way, when we turn our worries over to God, we’ll be free to enjoy His presence and hear what He has to say to us.
The weeds will take over and choke out good fruit But you can control them – just follow this plan Make sure that the seed of God’s Word has deep root And pull out the weeds just as soon as you can!
This is a wise plan to follow because the deeper the root is planted, the harder it is to get rid of. Let’s make a promise to plant God’s Word deeper than any weed that can grow, so that each of us can be the beautiful garden God created us to be! Stephanie A. My Answered Prayer! Submitted by Angela Morris
We teach our children daily about making the right choices. There are just so many decisions they have to make. As parents, we want to steer our children away from the mistakes we have already made. We know the grief that bad choices can cause. There is one choice that is more important than any other. As Christian parents, we want to see our children accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and be in the Word. However, if they do not choose to do this, can we force it? The answer is no. Becoming a Christian is truly a personal journey. Our part of the journey is to provide the foundation, give them the tools, plant the seed, and water it. It is up to the child to allow the seed to take root and grow.
Several months ago my daughter (who was 11 years old at the time) confessed to me that she was not sure if she believed in God. She has been fighting ongoing medical issues which made it exceptionally difficult for her to understand that Jesus loves her. She had been wondering, “Where is He?” Part of me wanted to go into a complete panic, but what did that say of my own belief? Instead, I shared Biblical stories with her and we reflected on Psalm 84:12, which states “O Lord Almighty, blessed is the man who
22 OverflowMag.com May 2011
trusts in You” (NIV). We also discussed the book of Job, and all the hardships he faced, yet he continued to be strong in his faith. I told her that she was at a crossroads, and if she allowed it, God would reveal Himself to her. I had to trust that God would, in fact, do just that. It became a prayer: Lord I lay this worry at Your feet and pray for Your guidance as I teach my child about You. Please provide me with the words You would have me say. Guide me in the direction that will allow my child to see and know the glory of You. For it is in Jesus’ mighty name that I say this prayer. Amen. The very next day she picked up my Bible, prayed, and opened it to Isaiah 40:5: "And the
glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all mankind together will see it. For the mouth of the LORD has spoken" (NIV). Her eyes grew wide and she smiled. I am thrilled to report that four months later my daughter began to open her heart to Christ. She was baptized shortly after God laid a narrative on my heart called “Mommy, Why is the Sky so Blue?” I knew if I shared this story with her, she would finally understand. I know not everyone’s moment is the same. Sometimes God’s touch is in a more subtle way; sometimes it is a direct hit. In all this, I have learned and now believe that God chooses the moment that softens your heart, allowing you to hear and understand who the great “I AM” is.
“Mommy, Why is the Sky so Blue?” Her tiny hand in mine, we walked through the park. The breeze gently teased about us, yet not a hair was blown out of place. We were silent for a while, our eyes feasting on it all. Leaves of red, yellow, and green; my God has painted this marvelous scene. Then her tiny voice chimed in, so sweet and melodic to my ears, "Mommy, why is the sky so blue? And why is the grass so green? Who made all these wonderful things?" A grin crossed my face. How amazing that God chose this place. I prayed for just a moment within the confines of my mind, “Please Lord God, give me the words to explain. The time has come for her to know Your Name. Let my love for You show.” I sat her down on the green, grassy hill. We took off our shoes so we could feel the grass between our toes. I took my Bible from my purse, opened it to share. "It’s all in here, my dear, all the answers to your why's. Genesis one tells us of our Maker. He created the Heavens and the earth. He made you and me in His image and He loves us so much. He is what is good and right in this world. He gave us this beauty that surrounds us on this hilltop. He provides for our needs as He sees fit.” She looked up at me with her big, beautiful eyes, sharing that big, beautiful smile, "Mommy, tell me more, I want to know more." I took her hands in mine and said, "First we pray." We gave Him thanks and all the glory; we prayed for guidance and nourishment for my daughter’s exploring. We are now close to her knowing Christ. Thank you, God, for this time. I kept it simple. She is so young. I began to tell her of Christ and all He had done. A tear fell from her eyes and she posed a question uncertain of the answer, "But Mommy,
why did He have to die?" I wiped the tears from her eyes before I explained, "Dear sweet girl, it was to save you and me and all the people in the world. We fall short from the glory of God. Sin is in the world; it is in you and me. So when He died upon the cross, He took on our sins. He paid it forward; He gave us our way in." I paused for a moment, letting her take it all in. Was this the moment; was she ready? As she stared up at me, she asked, "Mommy, what’s next? What must I do? I want to go to Heaven, too." Now my tears flowed as freely as hers. Thank you, Lord Jesus, for allowing me this time. I took a deep breath before I spoke, "Do you admit you are a sinner?" She nodded her head with confidence and said, "Yes, Mommy, I do." "Do you believe that Jesus is God’s Son and accept God’s gift of forgiveness from sin?" My heart raced as I awaited her response. "Yes,
Mommy, I do," she answered without pause. I asked, "Are you ready to accept Christ into your heart?" My mind was reeling; would she take the final step? "Yes, Mommy." Now sobbing she fell into my arms and I whispered in her ear, "Feel that breeze?" She nodded intently, her head buried in my chest. “That’s Christ’s arms, He is enveloping us. You are now reborn. From this day forward, you will never be the same.” The moment slowly passed. We gathered our emotions as the sun melted away. We stood up quietly, hand in hand again. Silence was all around us. The breeze gently teased about us, yet not a hair was blown out of place. Now we walked in faith with God by our side. Just Follow the Instructions >>> BY CHRIS CHERP
CATHOLIC. BAPTIST. PRESBYTERIAN. NON-DENOMINATIONAL. It really doesn’t matter what background you may have; the common factor here on earth is that we all have needs. I can remember, not too many years ago, trying to figure out how I could take on a few additional jobs just to get ahead in my finances. I was like a dog chasing its tail, always on the go but never getting anywhere. One day, I had the amazing idea of taking this matter to the Lord to see what He had to say about it. At first, I got nothing. I would sit quietly (even in my closet) trying my hardest to hear from the Lord. Finally, He gave me the thought, “The answers to most every question can be found in the Word of God.” So, I began to search and that’s when I found Matthew 6:33 (NKJV), “But seek first the [K]ingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” In Matthew 6:25-32 Jesus said not to worry and that all things (referring to everyday necessities like clothes, food, and drink) will be added to us when we follow the basic instructions found in Matthew 6:33. What exactly is the Kingdom of God spoken of in this Scripture and how does one seek it? The answer is easy – Jesus. The Kingdom of God is fresh revelation of Jesus Christ that can only be found in the Word of God and through the teachings of anointed men and women of God. After receiving Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, the veil is torn off the believer's heart (2 Corinthians 3:12-18). When this happens, the believer can then seek knowledge
about Jesus in the Scriptures and in teachings and receive better understanding from them. There are many parables in the Bible that describe the Kingdom of God as a good and loving Kingdom. Those who don't believe in Jesus see these parables as confusing. However, those who believe and thirst for Jesus are given the ability to understand clearly. Then He explained to them, “You have been permitted to understand the secrets of the Kingdom of Heaven, but others have not. To those who are open to my teaching, more understanding will be given, and they will have an abundance of knowledge. But to those who are not listening, even what they have will be taken away from them” (Matthew 13:11-12, NLT). When we seek first the Kingdom of God, we receive an abundance of knowledge and all the things we need in life are added to us. When we keep our eyes on Jesus and not on the material things, it is amazing how God will begin to supply abundantly. Often times, when Matthew 6:33 is discussed, we seem to focus on the “the Kingdom of God” portion of this verse, but overlook “and His righteousness.” His righteousness is a key part to the instructions for having all these things added, for two reasons. First, so we can receive them and second, so we are able to keep them. We can disqualify ourselves from receiving the abundant blessings that God wants to shower
24 OverflowMag.com May 2011
upon us because of our self-righteousness, or the illusion of it. The enemy tries to condemn the believer with thoughts that we are not worthy to receive such great gifts. This is a lie! The minute we make Jesus our Lord and Savior, our Father God in Heaven sees us through the cross, in Jesus and His perfection (2 Corinthians 5:17). Since Jesus bore all our sins on the cross, God remembers our sins no more (Isaiah 43:25). We are worthy because of Jesus. When material blessings begin to manifest in our lives, sometimes we have the tendency to look at ourselves as the reason for our success. When this occurs self-righteousness is taking root which leads to a haughty spirit. The Bible states in Proverbs 16:18 (NKJV), "Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall." If one allows self-righteousness to develop, destruction is not far behind. By daily seeking first the Kingdom of God and continually reminding ourselves that we are the righteousness of God through Christ Jesus, we allow all good things to be added to our lives (Matthew 6:33; 2 Corinthians 5:21). When we realize that it's all because of Jesus, we are able to keep the things the Lord has paid for with His blood. We can achieve this by starting the day seeking a fresh revelation of Jesus by reading a verse in the morning or listening to a teaching on the drive to work or school. God’s blessings will begin to overtake us when we receive the sweet revelation that we are in right standing with God because of Jesus and His love for us (Romans 5:9; Deuteronomy 28:1-14). Then, we are able to become a real blessing to others and share the Kingdom of God that's within us. Glory!

Each gathering also features a short devotional by a member company, followed by a brief educational segment. This encourages conversation and allows members to seek guidance with difficult business decisions or issues, and to share their insight with other members. Week after week, we continue to hear personal testimonies from our members and guests on how the Lord is working in their lives and of His great provision. I hope you will join us at an upcoming CBC networking group to meet other like-minded Christian professionals, as we grow in Christ together. Romans 12:1-2 (NIV) “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will.” I like this verse because it reminds me of God’s sacrifice for our sins and that He has a plan for our lives.
