THE FOREVER TEACHER

As your children go into a new school year, it’s a good time to reflect on the importance of the teacher’s role. Learn who our forever Teacher is and the example of service and love He portrayed.

FROM THE EDITOR AUGUST 2011, Issue 19 ____________________________________ Editor | Amie Cherp amie@overflowmag.com His ministry. I encourage you to read this captivating story. Let us know what you think on Facebook and stay tuned for part two of “Forgiveness When it Hurts” next month. I assure you that you don’t want to miss it. In our feature Magnify Him, on page 24, learn about Ashley and Alex Poptodorov’s journey to fulfilling their God-given purpose of helping others to get fit. This story certainly inspires me to use my God-given gifts to help others and, of course, to get back in the gym! Don’t forget about our writing contest for a chance to win a 3-month advertising campaign for your church. You just have to submit a story on how Overflow Magazine has impacted your life! All submissions are due by August 31, 2011. Thank you to everyone who has already submitted their stories. Dear Friends, I can’t believe it is already August and school will be starting back soon. It is time to go shopping for school supplies and new school clothes. As a child, I can remember the shopping trips with my mom. It was one of my favorite parts of going back to school. It was a special time with my mom where I got to pick out what I wanted. My mom made it fun, and it helped make going back to school more exciting. Do you have a child attending preschool this year? If so, I encourage you to check out the “Back-to-School Tips for Preschoolers” on page 8. You will find out helpful ways to ease the transition for you and your child. This month we are featuring a back-to-school article by Kerry Johnson. God revealed a beautiful truth to Kerry through her two young sons. In “The Forever Teacher” learn about what a forever teacher is and who fills this role in your life (see page 10). We are trying something new this month. We have part one of a short story on page 22. This creative writing teaches a lesson similar to how Jesus taught through parables during

I want to share something that keeps coming up in my spirit lately. The Lord keeps reminding me to keep my eyes on Jesus and to rest in Him. We often run around so busy, and our eyes will begin to drift off of Jesus on to the “waves” or “wind” around us (Matthew 14:22-33). If we just keep our eyes on Him, we would stay above the water and walk into His loving arms. I have found the best way for me to keep my eyes on Him is to spend time in His Word or to listen to Christ-centered teachings. Every time that I do, I am able to adjust my focus back to Jesus – my strength, peace, and comfort. If you don’t know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior today, then please go to the salvation section on page 18. When you give your life to Jesus, you will receive a great peace and joy. Have a blessed August! With Love in Jesus,

Amie Cherp

BACK-TO-SCHOOL TIPS for Preschoolers >>>BY TERESA CHARLTON, Director of Victorious Life Academy

BACK TO SCHOOL

The first day at school can be a rewarding but frightening experience for a child. It is a new world that is exciting and some adjustments will be necessary. The goal is to make your child’s experience go as smoothly as possible. Here are some suggestions to help your child be ready for their first day of preschool:

Get plenty of sleep Get up early enough so that you will not have to rush Eat a good breakfast Wear comfortable clothing Get to school on time

To make the first week a pleasurable experience, ensure that your child is familiar with the school and the teacher. Visit the school and find out the name of your child’s teacher. Then, visit your child’s classroom and the restroom facilities to make sure your child is comfortable with them. Before your child starts school, take them on a fun trip to the store to get supplies, like a nap mat, pencil box, glue sticks, child scissors, etc. Let your child pick out a lunch box and a pocket folder with their favorite character on it. This trip will make your child more excited about going to school. Finally, remember that your attitude as a parent will influence the feelings your child has about school. Don’t let any anxiety you may have be evident to your child. Listen to your child’s concerns and reassure them that things will go well. Following these suggestions will help ease the transition for you and your child. If you have not decided on a preschool yet for your child, we encourage you to consider Victorious Life Academy.

THE ACADEMY

Victorious Life Academy (VLA) is a ministry of Victorious Life Church. VLA’s mission is to be a beacon of excellence in preschool education, spiritual growth, and social development and to use the A-Beka preschool curriculum. VLA is affiliated with and accredited through the Florida League of Christian Schools (FLOCS). VLA has been awarded the Seal of Excellence by FLOCS and holds the Gold Seal with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). VLA is a preschool for children ages one to four, which includes VPK (Prekindergarten Program) and the Reading Readiness Program. It is our prayer that we will present a program of excellence, integrating God’s truth into all areas of the curriculum. All subject matter is viewed in light of the Word of God (Philippians 4:8), and the absolute truths found in Scripture are integrated into all areas of the curriculum. VLA recognizes that it is essential to develop the whole child. Our curriculum, therefore, includes elements that allow for social, physical, cognitive, and spiritual development. The A-Beka curriculum (plus the Wee Learn) keeps learning lively and is firmly anchored to practicality. We also provide a Bible lesson along with our daily curriculum. VLA staff members are selected for their ability to model Christ’s love to a child. The teachers at VLA are certified, have extensive experience in working with children, and are involved in continual in-service training. The children of VLA are surrounded with the love of God and Biblical principles on a daily basis. VLA is a safe environment where children will be encouraged to support each other with godly integrity and accept each other unconditionally. We believe that your child would be blessed to be a part of our wonderful school. VLA invites you to visit us Monday through Friday or join us for services on Sunday at Victorious Life Church.

COVER SPOTLIGHT

THE FOREVER TEACHER >>>BY KERRY JOHNSON

“A good teacher is like a candle - it consumes itself to light the way for others.” —Author Unknown

A forever teacher is a person whose lessons, words, and teachings have affected our lives the most - a teacher whose truth, love, and care touched our soul and spread like wildfire through our life. Can any one teacher fit this description? Yes, but only one: The Name above all names...Jesus. At times it slips my mind that before my precious Savior fulfilled Scripture and gave Himself as a perfect sacrifice for the sins of humanity (Mark 8:31; Luke 18:31-33), Jesus was a beloved Teacher. We call Him Savior, Lord, Friend of Sinners, the Mighty God, the Redeemer, Wonderful, the Prince of Peace, Emmanuel, the Root of Jesse, and the King of kings. But to the twelve disciples He chose, Jesus was their beloved Lord and Teacher—their forever Teacher.

A

s the carefree days of summer come to a close, parents begin preparing for the new school year. Uniforms and school clothes, notebooks and binders, lunchboxes, pens and pencils, and many other items are added to the must-have list for the first day of school. Bedtimes are moved up, and hours spent in the pool become a weekend treat. The “H” word makes an unwelcome entrance back into our vocabulary and lives—Homework. A new school year also brings the daunting process of handing our children off to a fresh set of adults. Their teachers will often spend more time with them each day than we will. Our children will learn new classroom rules, grading procedures, and all the expectations placed upon them in the next grade. As a parent, there are many things I pray for going into a new school year: for a loving relationship between my children and their teachers; that my children make friends in class; for a comfortable, safe learning environment; and that the teacher sees my child’s strengths as well as their weaknesses. Nine months is just a sliver of time, yet those months can have a resounding effect in our lives. One day this summer God spoke a beautiful truth about teachers through my boys. I was folding clothes when I heard Cole and Chase’s voices carry down the hall from their bedroom. Sometimes I eavesdrop on their sweet and often humorous conversations so I can share it with my husband or family later. But this time, the words I heard struck a spiritual chord. Cole (age 7) said, “Let’s play school. I’m the teacher. I’ll teach the alphabet.” Chase (age 5) responded, “But I want to be the teacher too.” Cole reasoned back, “I’m going into 2nd grade, so I should teach you.” Chase finally agreed and said, “Okay. But I want a turn to be teacher, too.” Then I heard Cole add, “But I’m older. I should be your forever teacher.” Cole’s point to his younger brother was true and understandable, as well as a humorous example of a child’s straightforward logic. As I chuckled just outside the doorway, I started thinking…what is a forever teacher, and have I ever had one?

At the beginning of Jesus’ earthly ministry, He gathered to Himself a diverse group of men who left everything in order to follow the man claiming to be Messiah. And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then Jesus said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.’ They immediately left their nets and followed Him. When He had gone a little farther from there, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the boat mending their nets. And immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went after Him. (Mark 1:16-20, NKJV) Andrew, John, Philip, Bartholomew, James, Thaddaeus, Thomas, Simon, Judas, Peter, Matthew, and James became students of Jesus. They had no idea how He would change their lives with His convicting words and justice-filled actions, and most importantly, with His all-encompassing love. The gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are filled with the teachings of Jesus and the many eyewitness accounts of His disciples. We read about Jesus calming the storm and questioning the fearful disciples’ faith (Mark 4:35-41), we learn through the many parables Jesus used to share God’s truth, and we marvel at the healing miracles He performed on those who had faith in Him. The classroom in which Jesus taught His disciples was often city roads laden with needy people or temple courtyards guarded by crowing, criticizing Pharisees. Jesus taught on fishing boats slammed by crashing waves and in crowds filled with hecklers and angry Jewish officials. Many of those who sat faithfully at His feet or trailed after Him, hoping to touch His robe or simply be near Him, were “the least of these” (Matthew 25:40). They were people disregarded by society, but loved by Jesus.

“One of the most beautiful examples of a teacher’s love for his student is seen through Jesus’ relationship with Peter.”

One of the most beautiful examples of a teacher’s love for his student is seen through Jesus’ relationship with Peter. Headstrong, impetuous Peter often jumped the spiritual gun, eventually betraying his Lord and Teacher just as predicted (Luke 22:34). But instead of rejecting Peter, Jesus poured His love and forgiveness into him. Jesus’ grace redeemed a broken man, and Peter went on to preach Christ and grow the Church, write two New Testament books, and heal the lame

in Jesus’ name (Acts 3:6). Ultimately, Peter was martyred for his faith in Jesus Christ. In honor of His beloved Savior and Teacher, Peter asked to be crucified upside down because he felt he wasn’t worthy to die in the same manner as Jesus.

“...as the weight of His purposed plan was unfolding, Jesus humbly washed His disciples’ feet.”

As students and humans, we often fight to see who is “the greatest.” With two young boys in our home, I often see this type of competition. The disciples were no different. In the gospels, we read of their disputes about which one would be considered greatest and which of them would sit at Jesus’ right hand in Glory. Jesus took great care to reveal His heart on the matter. “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45, NKJV). After the Feast of the Passover, as the weight of His purposed plan was unfolding, Jesus humbly washed His disciples’ feet. It was an act of service for the men He’d taught, shared with, and loved deeply. Having their feet washed by their Lord and Teacher was an example of serving that they would remember long after He left them and returned to the right hand of the Father in Heaven. You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. (John 13:13-15, NKJV) How can we remember this example given by our Savior? As we begin a new school year, how can we serve those who are teaching and serving our children? How can we

honor our forever Teacher, Jesus? “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another (John 13:34-35, NKJV). Keeping God’s Word in hand and hiding it in our hearts is the foundation for learning to love and serve like Jesus. Through faith in Him, we’re given access to the attributes of our Savior and forever Teacher. We just need to ask for Jesus to fill us with His patience, love, and peace. A new school year – and life in general - is guaranteed to bring trials and difficulties, but our Savior offers a peace that surpasses understanding and a wellspring of love for us to draw from. Going into the 2011-2012 school year, remember your child’s teacher in your prayers. Though they are not your child’s forever teacher, they’ll lay important educational bricks while you’re laying spiritual bricks in your home and at church. Your children’s teachers need prayer and God’s strength, just as we as parents do. Lift them up with encouragement and thanks and be available to help out when you can during the school year. The teacher will appreciate it and your child will be lovingly hemmed in by the camaraderie between parent, teacher, and school. Most importantly, we honor our loving Lord and forever Teacher when we seek to know Him more and live out His love in our lives. “O God, You have taught me from my youth; And to this day I declare Your wondrous works” (Psalm 71:17, NKJV).

Baseball and Faith Life Lessons for Tampa’s Youth By Chris Cambas and Eddie Cardieri

Walkoff.org

Mission Statement: Our mission is to develop young men and women of faith by stressing the fundamentals of faith, family, fellowship, formation (hard work), and fun utilizing the game of baseball.

It’s the bottom of the ninth, full count, and here comes the pitch. "Crack!" It’s going, going…gone. The home team wins 5 to 4 with a walk-off home run. In baseball, a walk-off home run is one that gives the home team the win in the bottom of the last inning of the game. Right after, the losing team walks off the field causing an on-field celebration. Continued on next page...

From a Christian worldview, a “walk-off home run” is a life built on faith, family, fellowship, formation (hard work), fundamentals, and fun. Walkoff.org is a website which seeks to show how two men (Coach Eddie Cardieri and 12-year-old baseball player Austin Cambas) integrate these core principles into their lives through baseball. The purpose of their journey is not to build a major league baseball player, but to spotlight what it takes to grow as a person of faith and, in turn, hit a walk-off home run in life. YOUR FAITH TALK ISN'T YOUR FAITH WALK

>>>BY CLESTINE I. HERBERT

“Well, our ancestor Abraham pleased God by putting his son Isaac on the altar to sacrifice him. Now you see how Abraham’s faith and deeds worked together. He proved that his faith was real by what he did.” James 2:21-22 (CEV) In December of last year, God dropped in my spirit the endless possibilities that He had for my business. He showed me where He wanted to take it this year. I was so excited and was in a place – spiritually and emotionally – where I believed what He was showing me. So I started to confess it and thank Him for what is to come. I shared it with key people, people that I know pray for me. Over a month later, I woke up one morning and the Spirit shared something profound that I want to share with you. My faith talk was expressing my belief in what God had shown me but my actions were not. My actions were reflecting my old way of thinking. In order to get what God was showing me in my spirit, my actions had to change in the natural. I was not going to go to the level God showed me, if my actions didn’t change to produce the results I needed. I needed to do something different and more than what was done last year. You may have believed God for something last year that never occurred and you may have been wondering why you believed God for it.

16   OverflowMag.com   August 2011

But let’s put last year where it belongs—in the past. Today is a new day. Do the following to exercise your faith and make your faith visible to yourself and others:

1. 2. 3. 4.

Write down what your faith is telling you in your situation. Now write down the actions that match the belief. Don’t allow your fears to cloud your actions. Now be courageous and do what you have written down.

This is faith in action. Today choose to turn your faith into action. Clestine I. Herbert is an inspirational speaker, life coach, and author. SALVATION

YOU'RE REDEEMED!

I

n Psalm 103, David paints a picture of God’s love and mercy for His people. We see the foretelling of what God offered to all of mankind. It is a window into God’s heart and what He accomplished through His Son. Our Father God made a way for complete forgiveness in Jesus Christ, so you don’t have to hold on to your past. This scripture tells us not to forget the benefits that come from having a relationship with our Almighty God: He forgives us, He heals us (soul and body), He redeems our lives, He crowns us with love and mercy, and He renews us through Jesus Christ. Whether you feel like you deserve forgiveness or not - forget what you did before. God wants to restore you and bring you into His loving Kingdom. The only thing you need to do is accept Jesus into your heart and declare Him as your Lord and Savior. With Jesus you can soar with the eagles and experience all of the wonderful things God has in store for His children. Will you accept Jesus into your heart and receive all of God’s gracious gifts?

Say this prayer aloud: Father God, I come before You in the Name of Jesus. Your Word says that “whoever calls on the Name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21, NKJV) and “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9, NKJV).

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, Who satisfies your mouth with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” Psalm 103:2-5 (NKJV)

Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me. It is because of Your love that You don't want me to be condemned and punished for my sins. Thank You for sending Your beloved Son, Jesus, to die for me on the cross. Jesus took my sins, penalties, and all my curses and in return gave me His blessing, righteousness, and favor. He got what I deserved so I can receive what He deserves - all good things! Jesus' blood washes me clean from every sin (past, present, and future). On the third day, Jesus rose from the dead and conquered death. Father, I thank You that when You look at me, You choose to no longer remember my sins and that You see me in all the beauty and righteousness of Jesus. Holy Spirit, fill me to overflowing and lead me through this life - thank You, Father. In Jesus' Name, Amen!

Give and Get What You Need to Flourish By: Lisa Bevere

“In this heartfelt work, Lisa explains how women of all ages must awaken and restore their capacity to give and receive nurture. The need for this indelible life force is far more urgent than we know. Is it possible we are too busy surviving to assure that the vulnerable among us thrive? Are we too guarded, wounded, and afraid to open our lives to the nurture of others? What can be done to establish this language of the feminine heart? It is time women are healed and empowered.” This book “shows you how to make these vital heart connections. HEALTHY LIFE

LOSE WEIGHT INSTANTLY >>>BY CHRIS CHERP

How many times have you heard something like: “Want to lose 30 pounds in 5 days or even lose 10 pounds in 10 minutes?”

“Give all your worries and cares to God, for He cares about what happens to you.” 1 Peter 5:7 (NLT)

These are what we call gimmicks, which never seem to work the way they claim. However, if you act now, you could be a part of the privileged to lose weight instantly! This is no gimmick. How? Just cast all your worries on Jesus and you will definitely lose weight - instantly. It sounds easy, but I assure you, it's not. It's our nature to pick the worries back up. But, the great news is that Jesus will take them from us as many times as we care to give them to Him. He is so merciful! Know that you can always go back to Him with your worries and He will gladly take care of them for you. God wants us to be dependant on Him. "Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’” (Matthew 6:31, NKJV). He doesn’t want us to worry about anything. Knowing that we have a Father in Heaven who has promised to never leave us nor forsake is the first step in losing this weight (Hebrews 13:5). With school starting back up there are always worries involved: new routines, new schools, new teachers, and new friends to make. These are legitimate concerns to have, so don’t think that they are not serious enough to hand them over to God. We don’t have to carry them and

try to handle them by ourselves. In 1 Peter 5:7 (NLT) the Word tells us, "Give all your worries and cares to God, for He cares about what happens to you." When it was time for my son to start preschool, I was concerned about where he would go and if I would feel comfortable enough to leave him there five days a week. I just prayed and sought God on where to put him in school; I gave the care of it to Jesus and let Him handle it. When I put the care down, I felt peace and like a weight had been removed from my back. The Lord led me to a great preschool where my son is flourishing. Praise God; it all worked out better than I expected. Parents and students - act now and lose weight instantly. Give your worries to Jesus. Let Him help you through your challenges. When everything works out, you can share with others how He never leaves you. So let Jesus have your cares today, and don't take them back. He cares more about what happens to you than you can imagine. Have a great school year! Enjoy writing? Need a platform to share what God has put on your heart? Then we want to hear from you! If you would like to submit an original article to potentially be printed in the magazine, then send it to: contact@overflowmag.com.

FORGIVENESS WHEN IT HURTS - Part 1 >>>A SHORT STORY BY TOMMY BURRUS

E

dwina had a difficult decision to make. It shouldn't be that tough a choice. After all, how many people would be kind to someone who had hurt them so deeply? Edwina had not been jealous of her sister except for once. Celesté was the one that the boys were after, but Edwina didn't envy that. Her sister was a stunningly beautiful woman while Edwina could only be described as cute. While Celesté was head cheerleader for two years and homecoming queen and prom queen her senior year, Edwina never had an interest in such things. She was proud of her sister, but she preferred to be an observer watching the lives of others. It was this very talent that served her on the school paper. The sisters’ diverse interests kept them from competing, which allowed them to be supportive toward one another. Celesté dreamed of being a model, and everyone thought that she would make it. As soon as she graduated, she headed off for New York to turn the fashion industry on its ear. Edwina thought her heart would break. She was going to miss her sister. She cried so much that first night. That summer, Edwina got a part-time job with local paper, and, while she still missed her sister, she was beginning to adjust. Soon summer would be over and Edwina would begin her senior year of high school. She tried to reason with her heart that it was only natural that the sisters grow up and spread their wings. After all, in just another year, she would also be headed off to college. If she was lucky, she would be accepted at either Princeton, Columbia, or NYU. In any event, Edwina and Celesté would probably end up living fairly close to one another.

22   OverflowMag.com   August 2011

By the time her senior year began, Edwina had realized something else: Life was completely different without Celesté around. She felt like a diamond that was sparkling for the first time. That thought made her feel guilty, but she didn't mean it in a bad way. Edwina simply felt that people seemed to treat her differently; they were more interested in her. Feeling accepted that way was really nice. It was an unexpected yet cherished gift, one that she never realized she wanted. The second week of school, a new student arrived. When Calvin Fosso walked into the classroom, Edwina could hardly breathe. His blue eyes were like pictures she'd seen of the earth taken from space, and when he looked her way, she forgot her own name. When he looked away and sauntered over to the teacher, Edwina realized that she was holding her breath. What was wrong with her? Edwina chided herself for being so cliché. This was not her. While other girls had oohed and ahhed over the latest pop star or teen heart throb, she had secretly scoffed at such ridiculous behavior. Why did girls who were otherwise bright become addlebrained around a boy? When the football quarterback walked down the school halls, girls flitted around like hummingbirds fighting over honeysuckle nectar. She had regained her composure by the time the new boy took his seat two rows over. The bell rang signaling the end of homeroom and the beginning of another day. Thoughts of the new student faded as she made her way to her honors English class. She was surprised to see him step through the door just after the final bell. She reminded herself that this year was too important to allow any distractions. Fortunately, his desk was on the opposite side of the classroom.

than a friendship, but one Thursday afternoon, Calvin asked her if she would go out with him Friday night. He was such a gentleman. She had never met a guy like Calvin before. Edwina and Calvin agreed not to allow their relationship to interfere with their school work, but it was a difficult promise to keep. When Edwina came home from school one day early in October, she was surprised to find Celesté's bedroom door open. She peeked in and saw her sister face down on the bed, fast asleep. Celesté had been gone for five months. Edwina started to go into her sister's room and wake her to tell her all about Calvin. As she stepped across the threshold, she noticed the box of tissues and the mound of wadded tissues next to her sister on the comforter. How could she share such great news when her sister was obviously upset about something? When Celesté came down for dinner, she was a different person. Edwina couldn't help but feel that her sister was a stranger. Never had she seen her sister so disheveled. She came to dinner in pajamas, her hair matted. Instead of her usual bubbly personality, she looked empty and vacant. Edwina was concerned, but she didn't know what to say to make her sister feel better.

When he walked into her sixth period journalism class, she felt that fate had conspired against her. He smiled at her and walked right over.

Edwina was relieved when Celesté seemed to snap out of it by that Saturday. "Sis, I'm going out. Wanna come with?" Celesté asked.

"Hi. I think we have the same homeroom and English class," he said.

Edwina grabbed her bag and they took off. Celesté told her that things had not worked out in New York.

It was the first time she had heard his voice and her knees felt like they would buckle. Only after leaning back against the wall did her mind process that he had noticed her earlier—twice. She swallowed and smiled, but she was wishing she had skipped the tacos at lunch.

"You can't give up. It's your dream," Edwina coaxed.

"Yes. Are you taking journalism, too?" she asked. "Guilty. I used to work on the school paper at my old high school." "Oh, really? Where?" "Boulder. Colorado." "Well, welcome to Angle Bay High." Edwina thought, “Did I really just say that? How lame!” "Thanks. My name is Calvin Fosso." "Edwina Alba." "Nice to meet you." As he said this, Calvin tilted his head down and looked up at her and smiled shyly. From that first day, Edwina and Calvin were inseparable. At first, Edwina was convinced that it would never be more

"That's over. Time to grow up." Given her sister's recent bad news, it still didn't seem like a good time to mention the changes she had experienced in her sister's absence. Calvin stopped by that evening to see Edwina. Celesté answered the door. When Edwina came down the stairs, she immediately felt a polar shift. Calvin had a guilty look on his face. Celesté seemed amused by it. It was the only time Edwina had ever been jealous of her sister. Edwina put on a brave face and asked Calvin to go for a walk with her, but the chemistry had been altered as if someone had removed the extra hydrogen atom and changed simple water (H2O) into the toxic hydroxide (OH). Edwina told Calvin that she had forgotten something and then she rushed off from his side and ran home before he could see the tears welling up in her eyes. He called her the next day to check on her, and she told him that she thought it was better if they broke up. She expected him to protest, but he didn't. TO BE CONTINUED... “E “

very good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows” (James 1:17, NIV). Those gifts are meant to be used to touch others' lives. Alex and I started AAP Fitness six years ago after I lost 80 pounds and experienced a life change. I was at a sad and sick state in my life, overweight with little self-confidence, when I realized a change was needed. Though I started my weight loss journey before meeting Alex, it was not until I met him that I learned the dire importance of nutrition and weight training. He molded and shaped me not only physically but also emotionally. I became like a new person, inside even more than out. I look back at my journey to health and realize that God carried me through my challenge of being overweight and unhappy. He helped me to overcome my situation, so that I could use my victory to give Him glory. Through this trial, I was given the gift to understand and help others who are struggling with weight or eating issues. I can relate, sympathize, and apply techniques that at one time helped me in my very own journey.

“high life.” We were taking advantage of all that we had been given in the wrong way. With the pressures and demands mounting up, we almost lost everything. Our relationship began to crumble and we found ourselves becoming worldly.

Alex was blessed with the gift of intelligence and strength. He was embarking on the path to becoming a doctor when we met. As time brought our hearts closer together, it became abundantly clear to me that he was not happy, and this was not his purpose. God has a unique way of opening doors and revealing His purpose. He knows where He wants to place us long before we do. Through my discussions with Alex, he began to realize that he was working toward becoming a doctor for all the wrong reasons. His heart was not in it, and I knew that God had other plans. Following this revelation, the dream was birthed in our hearts to start a business to help others—AAP Fitness. AAP Fitness began in a 200 square-foot garage full of Alex's old gym equipment. We had no knowledge of how to run a business, but had a dream and desire to help others. Things went smoothly and AAP literally exploded! We knew that we were on the right path, and God was opening doors that only He could open. I look back now at some of the things that we did when starting AAP and I know that it was only God above directing us. We expanded to 400 square feet less than a year after opening. We moved all of our furniture to my father’s house and turned our living room and kitchen into a gym. After another year and many more blessings, it became clear that we needed our own commercial space. This is when we made our move to Cory Lake Professional Center. AAP began operating out of a 600 square-foot facility and later upgraded to 900 square feet. As of last month, after many answered prayers, AAP Fitness expanded to a gorgeous 1,600 square-foot location complete with a commercial kitchen. This is where we will have our newest addition – AAP Fit Café featuring Organic Life Coffee. This is a huge testament to God's amazing grace and love! We have had five locations in six years! My purpose is not to focus on the story of AAP and our growth, but to truly to Magnify HIM!

Because we were not good stewards of what we had been blessed with, we had to overcome some challenges. We were not following our “manual” on how GOD wants us to live. You see, the Bible is the Book of Life containing answers to everything from money to relationships to your health. Thankfully, through God’s grace and understanding, we were able to regain our focus on what matters and Who matters. When we went through these tough trials, we became stronger. We became more confident of our purpose in this world. Our gifts were strengthened, our relationship grew closer, and our business flourished even more. After all of these valuable lessons, God entrusted us with even more. He opened doors for us to be in this beautiful location that at one time was only a dream. We now have the space to do all that God has planned for us. With our new location and the AAP Fit Café in the works, there is much to be thankful for.

Visit www.aapfitness.com to learn more about Alex & Ashley.

I have always had a dream to teach foster children the importance of health and nutrition. Now, we have a place to do just that. Just as I used to say when I was a child – God is good. God is great. Live by His Word. Trust in His Word. Trust in His plan for your life and you will see all of the gifts that He promises. Remember that in life your greatest struggles and weaknesses can become your greatest victories and strengths. With God’s help, you can overcome any trial and, in turn, you are given the opportunity to use your gifts to help others. The next time you are faced with a challenge, remember that with God ALL things are possible (Matthew 19:26). Trust in Him! Alex and Ashley are both certified personal trainers. They reside in Wesley Chapel with their 4 furry children. Alex and Ashley have owned AAP Fitness for the past 6 years and have a team of 4 certified Elite AAP Fitness trainers!

We started with NOTHING, literally. We had a dream and a vision to use our God-given gifts to help others improve their lives. Without God directing us and opening these doors, AAP would not exist today. God does not entrust us with that which He knows we cannot handle. To whom much is given, much is expected (Luke 12:48). In the beginning, things grew so fast that we started to take our eyes off the Lord. We began to focus more on running our business and less on letting God run it. As money was coming in, we began to spend more and more and live the

MY ROCK SCRIPTURES I STAND ON

1 Corinthians 1:30 (KJV) “But of Him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption.” As a child of God, I am in Christ! This is an unspeakably inspiring truth! To think that the love of almighty Christ makes me a partaker of His nature is beyond comprehension. There should never be a feeling of hopelessness for the believer. Glory to God!

MY ROCK SCRIPTURES I STAND ON

Job 23:10 (NASB)

"But He knows the way I take; When He has tried me, I shall come forth as gold.” This reminds me that when I mess up, He loves me and doesn’t give up on me. He’ll keep on loving me and testing me until I reflect the pure character of His Son, Christ Jesus. Thank You, God, for never giving up on me.
