with thousands of families needing assistance each week. Join me and my family as we help these ministries feed the hungry in Tampa Bay, especially for Thanksgiving and Christmas (see how on page 11). Let’s show God’s love and give what we can to help.

Dear Friends, I can’t believe the holidays are almost here. Christmas is my favorite time of year. We get to celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ, and spend quality time with family. As Christmas approaches, I always enjoy the beautiful music that takes me back to the day God gave us the Gift that changed the world forever. In “The Melodies of Christmas” on page 24, we are reminded of the true meaning of Christmas and God’s plan of redemption through Jesus Christ. Get encouraged about our loving Father and His relentless pursuit to regain relationship with His family as you read “The Greatest Love Story Ever” by Chris Cherp. Then, visit our salvation section on page 16, if you don’t know Jesus as your Savior. If you receive Him in your heart, this Christmas will be your best one yet. Whether God leads us across the world or across the street, we will never regret doing anything in the name of our Lord. Read on page 20 the inspiring story of a young couple who plan to venture across the world to proclaim Jesus Christ in Southeast Asia.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13, NKJV). I know this scripture is used fairly often, but have you stopped and really meditated on it. I used to look at this verse and think it just meant that He would give us enough strength to do anything. However, I received a fresh revelation that we can do all things because it is actually Jesus doing it, not us. As children of God, we have Jesus dwelling on the inside of us and He has the ability to do all things. It is not about us at all, only Jesus. Once we realize this, there is no pressure concerning our own ability and we can rest in Him. Throughout this past year, the Lord spoke to me often about keeping my eyes on Jesus and directing my faith toward Him alone. Many times, I was “aiming” my faith in various directions for certain things such as healing or finances. I kept looking at myself and saying, “I need to increase my faith for this or that.” But, the Lord told me to stop splitting my faith, and direct it solely on Jesus. When we put our faith in Jesus, He will handle the rest. Then, our faith is much more effective. I once heard a great analogy for this using the rays of sunlight. Imagine many sunrays pointed in many directions, and then think about combining all those sunrays and directing them at one place. What great power that would be. Let’s focus on Jesus this holiday season and remember that He is the greatest Gift that has ever been given. Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas! With Love in Him,

Can you imagine not having enough food to eat during the holidays? We are spotlighting some local food ministries this month. Many food banks are experiencing a food shortage

THE GREATEST LOVE STORY EVER BY CHRIS CHERP

I

n the beginning, God formed the heavens and the earth, separated day from night, and separated dry land from water (Genesis 1:1-10). “And God said, ‘Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky" (Genesis 1:20, NIV). God then blessed them and told them to be fruitful and multiply. After that God spoke and created all living creatures that move along the ground and wild animals. “…And God saw that it was good" (Genesis 1:25, NIV). God created and prepared the entire earth and everything in it before He created man. Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the

air and over every living creature that moves on the ground." God saw all that He had made, and it was very good… (Genesis 1:26-28 & 31, NIV).

pride or self-righteousness of man must be recognized and put away. We can only become righteous through Jesus Christ.

Man was created by God to be part of His family, to fellowship with Him, to be His friend, and to rule over God’s gift to man, earth. Unfortunately, we know how the story goes: Eve was deceived by the serpent and ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and then shared the forbidden fruit with Adam, thus the fall of man (the separation from God). Fortunately, the story doesn’t end there.

In our society we have a lot of wonderful things to be grateful for. Most of us live under a roof that protects us from the rain and have air conditioning to protect us from the sweltering heat of the day, not to mention food to eat and clean water to drink. Many times, though, we look past all these wonderful gifts from God and complain about things like having to work late or having to do something that wasn’t planned in our schedules.

If you think about any great love story, it normally follows this pattern. Man and woman meet and fall in love. Then, something causes them to be separated, like immigration, family, or even assumed death. Some way, somehow, the man and woman reunite and are able to express their love for each other once again. They then live happily ever after. All these wonderful love stories are just outlines of what our Father did for us through Jesus Christ. Jesus, the beloved Son of God, came to earth in the form of man to rightfully take back from the devil what Adam mistakenly gave away to him. Jesus walked the earth without sin, fulfilling the Law and becoming the perfect sacrifice for all our sins. He did all this so man could be reunited with his loving Father God. If you step back and look at the challenges that God overcame to bring us back into fellowship with Him, you see the most beautiful love story in history. This is great news! In order for man to be reunited with his Maker and loving Father, all he has to do is make Jesus his Lord and Savior. But, in order to successfully do this, man must understand that he is not able to get in right standing with God on his own. That’s where the

8   OverflowMag.com   Nov / Dec 2011

As we approach this holiday season, take a few moments and think about all the sacrifices that God has made through His beloved Son in order to have a loving relationship with His created family, mankind. God now sits in Heaven happy and well-pleased with His Son’s perfect and completed work at the cross. Instead of focusing on our problems, let’s focus on Jesus, and our problems will soon fade. Let’s recognize all that our loving Father God has done for us and be thankful. If you are going through life trying to make ends meet on your own only to find that your efforts are never enough, then I encourage you to become a part of the greatest love story ever and make Jesus your Lord and Savior. Then, find a good church that focuses on Jesus and start learning your rights as a believer. As you grow in the understanding of God's grace and mercy, you will begin reigning in life and resting in Jesus' finished work and unconditional love. Simply go to page 16 and say the salvation prayer inviting Jesus into your heart and begin a life full of favor and blessing. Glory! 

FEEDING THE HUNGRY in Tampa Bay: A CALL TO ACTION

D

uring the holidays people are busy preparing for guests, buying gifts, pulling out decorations, and brushing up on old family recipes. As you make your grocery list, stop and imagine if one of your loved ones didn’t have enough food to eat every day, much on less Thanksgiving or Christmas. The thought strikes a chord in our hearts. As you set the table for dinner, think about the millions of families who will go hungry tonight. The number of people unsure of where their next meal will come from is on the rise. The need is very real. Where do you go if you need food and who provides it? The answer: a local food bank. If you’ve ever been to a food pantry or volunteered at one, then you understand that these outreaches don’t just feed the homeless. They also help feed other hurting families. It could be your brother, your next door neighbor, or even the person sitting next to you at church. Hunger doesn’t discriminate. It’s rampant among all people. The USDA’s 2010 annual report revealed that over 17 MILLION HOUSEHOLDS across the United States are food insecure, which means they were not able to obtain an adequate amount of food to meet the needs of their household (www.ers.usda.gov). That’s almost 49 MILLION PEOPLE, with over 16 MILLION CHILDREN at risk of going hungry (www.ers.usda.gov). According to a study done for Feeding America Tampa Bay, over 50,000 PEOPLE receive emergency food assistance every week in West Central Florida (www.feedingamericatampabay.org). Jesus teaches us in the Bible to love God and to love people (Matthew 22:37-39). The greatest expression of love is GIVING (John 3:16). Most people have a heart to give during the holiday season, but may be unsure of what to do or

where to go. Well, we’ll make it easy for you. There is a major food shortage at most Bay Area food pantries and banks. Thousands of families rely on food relief programs all year long. So, the next four pages highlight select ministries who share the passion to fight against hunger throughout Tampa Bay. We encourage you to contact or visit at least ONE of these organizations. You can help them reach more people – whether it’s just $1 or one can of food, every donation counts. In the Name of Jesus, let’s show God’s love and feed the hungry together.

Metropolitan Ministries "Metropolitan Ministries’ mission is to care for the homeless and those at risk of becoming homeless in our community through services that alleviate suffering, promote dignity and instill self-sufficiency...as an expression of the ongoing ministry of Jesus Christ."

M

etropolitan Ministries was founded in 1972 by 13 downtown Tampa churches of different denominations. They consolidated their individual efforts to help the homeless and hungry families and formed the ministry. Thirty-nine years later Metropolitan Ministries continues to faithfully reach out to the poor, hungry, and homeless. They provide food, clothing, shelter, and other vital services to those in need. Metropolitan Ministries offers a large array of programs, some of which include adult education, literacy and GED, employment boot camp,

homeless prevention programs, Uplift U Residential Program, counseling, health and nutrition, financial management, and permanent supportive housing. The ministry shows their clients compassion, which gives them hope for a brighter future – a way back to self-sufficiency. Each day, up to 150 families seek help from Metropolitan Ministries, needing food and clothing. Of those, about 15 families have no shelter, which amounts to around 450 families a month. Through Compassion + Action, which is a network of partner organizations throughout Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Polk Counties, 1,700 hot meals are served every day. Metropolitan Ministries is expecting to serve over 25,000 families this holiday season. They will need 1 million pounds of food and 70,000 toys/gifts to meet this need.

SALVATION

THE GIFT OF A SAVIOR I

n the second chapter of Luke, the Bible tells us about the night of Jesus’ birth. An angel of the Lord visited shepherds out in a field near Bethlehem. The angel told them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people” (Luke 2:10, NKJV). The good news was that our Savior, Jesus Christ, was born! The angel also said that the sign the shepherds should look for was a “Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger” (Luke 2:12, NKJV). When the shepherds went to Bethlehem they found Jesus exactly as the angel had described, lying in a manger. They praised the Lord saying, “Glory to God in the highest” because God kept His promise to the people of Israel (Luke 2:14). The promise of a Savior was fulfilled through the birth of God’s Son, which marked the change in man’s relationship with God forever. This Christmas can mark the change in your relationship with God forever. No matter what your past is and what your burdens are, you can release everything to God because our Savior Jesus Christ has already paid for it all. The promise has already been fulfilled and the gift of salvation is ready to be unwrapped by you. Will you accept the gift of Jesus Christ?

If you want to accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior, say this prayer aloud: Father God, I come before You in the Name of Jesus. Your Word says that “whoever calls on the Name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21, NKJV) and “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9, NKJV). Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me. It is because of Your love that You don't want me to be condemned and punished for my sins. Thank You for sending Your beloved Son, Jesus, to die for me on the cross. Jesus took my sins, penalties, and all my curses and in return gave me His blessing, righteousness, and favor. He got what I deserved so I can receive what He deserves - all good things! Jesus' blood washes me clean from every sin (past, present, and future). On the third day, Jesus rose from the dead and conquered death. Father, I thank You that when You look at me, You choose to no longer remember my sins and that You see me in all the beauty and righteousness of Jesus. Holy Spirit, fill me to overflowing and lead me through this life - thank You, Father. In Jesus' Name, Amen!

“For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:11 (NKJV)

The answer to this and the amazing story of Nana Rock-a-Bye and Little Star are told in this wonder-filled musical tale that reminds young and old of the true meaning of Christmas!”

THE COST OF DOING BUSINESS >>>A SHORT STORY BY TOMMY BURRUS

THE COST OF DOING BUSINESS –Part 2–

A SHORT STORY BY TOMMY BURRUS This is a continuation of the story from last month’s issue (on page 22). If you did not have the opportunity to read Part 1, then visit OverflowMag.com to view the digital issue.

"You know," my boss said, "you have so much talent and potential. Mark, you should be the one closing the deal with those Maritzco folks." Before I could protest, he continued, "Yeah, I know. I know. You have principles."

favor with the man who was in charge of him. I immediately recognized my situation in the message, and began to listen intently. It surely was no coincidence. This moment had been ordained of God.

knocked the sales presentation out of the park. Mr. Boren was smiling like the cat that ate the canary. The three guys from Maritzco were trying to be subtle, but they weren't succeeding. It was clear that they were pleased.

What followed was an uncomfortable few moments. I wasn't sure if he expected me to defend my faith or apologize for my faith. I opted just to remain quiet, sensing the leading of God's Spirit. After what seemed like an interminable silence, Mr. Boren congratulated me on a good job, and told me to have a great weekend. I shuffled out of the office and offered up another prayer.

As I listened, I had such a sense of peace come over me. I realized how stressed I had been. I could sense God revealing to me that this situation was in His control. He was reminding me that He is always faithful. How had I forgotten? I was suddenly filled with thanksgiving and praise to God. He is the One who works all things together for good!

I

Mr. Boren explained to the VIP clients that John Rizen, the sales manager, would be taking them out for the evening. There were handshakes all around, as Rizen escorted the execs out the door. He was promising them a chance to unwind and consider the offer. I had to roll my eyes as he explained that Boren Enterprises would also go to great lengths to take care of our customers. Right then, I uttered a silent prayer. Knowing that I could never compromise by entertaining clients the way that Rizen did, I prayed for God to give me wisdom and direction. Just then, Mr. Boren patted me on the back and invited me into his office.

As I drove home, I felt exhausted. I considered that maybe it was time to seek a new job. It was clear that Mr. Boren had high hopes that he would wear down my resolve and eventually convince me that my faith wasn't welcome at work. "Dear heavenly Father, I want to be faithful to you. I need your help." I decided to switch on a CD I had bought at a revival conference. The pastor was speaking about how God had worked in Daniel's life. Daniel and his three friends had determined not to defile themselves. God had granted Daniel

As I turned into my driveway, I realized that I felt invigorated. I decided that I would go in and change clothes and go for a run. Just as I shut off the car, my cell phone rang. I could tell by the ringtone that the call was from the office. As I answered the call, Mr. Boren's voice boomed from the earpiece. "Mark, I need you to come back. The wheels are coming off over here on the Maritzco deal. I think you're the only one who can salvage this mess." I promised him that I was on my way, and I headed back toward the office. The run would have to wait.

As I pulled in, Mr. Boren waved me over to his idling car. I opened the passenger door and Mr. Boren explained that we were heading over to the hotel where the Maritzco executives were staying. On the way, he explained that he had gotten a call from John and then from the clients. He didn't know the details, but they were very unhappy. We called from the front desk and were told that Chuck Jones, the senior executive from the Maritzco reps would meet us in the lobby. We sat down opposite one another in overstuffed rustcolored chairs in the lobby and waited. Within a few minutes, the elevator chimed as the doors slid open. Chuck Jones walked over and took the third chair. He explained that he had been ready to sign the deal right after the presentation, but he now felt that he could not do business with our company. Mr. Boren stammered, but Chuck held up a finger and continued. He said that he was offended by the sales manager's unprofessionalism and would not work with a company that could condone that kind of conduct. Mr. Boren found his opportunity and began damage control. "Mr. Jones, I cannot tell you how sorry I am for this." He leaned in and spoke conspiratorially, "Mr. Jones, you should know that John Rizen is on his way out. In fact, I have already spoken to Mark about taking over the sales manager position, and one thing I admire most about Mark is his integrity. He is an upstanding Christian man. I guarantee you, Mr. Jones, if you'll overlook this unfortunate situation tonight, you'll be in good hands with Mark." Chuck Jones turned to me and began to ask some questions. As it happens, we had a lot in common. In fact, we had even attended the same revival conference. He agreed to reconsider, and I promised to bring the contracts over first thing in the morning.ď Ž

MAGNIFY HIM SUBMITTED BY YOU!

PROCLAIMING THE GOOD NEWS OF CHRIST OUR SAVIOR

by Leslie Shepherd

20   OverflowMag.com   Nov / Dec 2011

“A

nd the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:10-11, KJV). It’s that time of year when life’s hard edges appear softer in the glow of twinkling lights, and the world seems to be a kinder, gentler place if only for a little while. For those of us who have trusted in Jesus as our Savior, Christmas is so much more than a reprieve from the ordinary. It is a celebration of peace that transcends all understanding and of love that endures through all seasons. As followers of Christ, it is the true meaning of Christmas that we are called to share. Jared and Kayla Gaboriault are missionaries with a heart-felt interest in answering this call. As they prepare to leave the comfort of their lives in America to move to the far corners of a foreign land, they sat down with me at their home church in Lithia to talk about the privilege of proclaiming God’s love.

in the name of God – the people of the predominantly Buddhist communist nation, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

PHOTOGRAPHED BY SHANA LEIGH PHOTOGRAPHY

“At first, my thoughts on ministering in a communist country were not met with great enthusiasm by other folks,” Jared admitted. But an important aspect of witnessing, he pointed out, is the willingness to be led by the Holy Spirit. “The Vietnamese were first on my heart when I was just a teenager thinking about becoming a missionary, but I dismissed it as a fleeting idea, and too many war movies,” he explained. It was not until he was fully immersed in his master’s degree studies at Westwood Baptist College School of Missions in Winter Haven that he felt the familiar pull to Vietnam, once again.

A former pastor with a master’s degree in missiology, Jared has used his years in both the pulpit and the mission field to listen and study his way to a better understanding of witnessing. “Most often, the right time to witness is not found in a single encounter, but in the process of finding common ground,” he said. “Nonbelievers do not know they are lost, so we must pursue opportunities to cultivate friendships and trust.” Still, approaching the topic of salvation with someone as familiar as a coworker leaves most Christians sitting in their cubicles. Well, consider this: Jared is referring specifically to building relationships with the people he and Kayla will soon be living near, working among, and reaching out to

In 2009, Jared and Kayla began to pray about moving to Vietnam. Equally committed to missions long before they met, Kayla said that she and Jared balance each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Currently teaching second grade at Collins Elementary School in Riverview, she described her husband as the picture of calm, quiet strength. He claimed to have actually thrown a fit once, but she pointed out that it was so subtle no one noticed. “I am the worrier,” she said with a laugh, and admitted to secretly hoping God’s guidance would lead them to a more Christian-friendly land like Mexico or Canada. Eventually, God’s direction began to come through people and opportunities. The dean at Westwood connected Jared to Reverend Danny Jones, missionary to Southeast Asia and pastor of Udon Thani Baptist Church in Thailand. As God’s perfect timing would have it, he was in town to attend the college’s Missions Conference. “Danny was one of the few people who encouraged my vision, but he asked me to consider Thailand as a home base,” Jared said. A constitutional monarchy where religious diversity is permitted, Thailand would provide close proximity to Vietnam and valuable connections to its people. “Even though the Vietnamese government enforces control over outside Western and Christian influence, favorable relations with an official often determine how rigidly the control is carried out,” Jared explained. “Danny’s suggestion supported my ideas about building relationships and trust.” In the summer of 2010, Jared and Kayla embarked on a journey to stay with Danny and his wife Rachel and experience Southeast Asia’s culture firsthand. After more than 30 hours of flight travel and layovers, numerous language and culture barriers, and the disorienting task of navigating the unfamiliar, what they found was not all that surprising. In this foreign land, they found vulnerable children of God, longing for someone to show them His love. During their stay, Jared and Kayla ventured out into their new surroundings and experienced everyday life in both Thailand and Vietnam. They exchanged U.S. dollars for the local Baht, navigated the busy streets and markets, and learned valuable words, such as “kem,” which means ice cream in Vietnamese. They visited rural areas and city parks, and the local zoo where Kayla rode on the trunk of an elephant. They also encountered the other “elephant in the room” - the Vietnam War. “A guide explained to us that with the average age of death at 55, most of the Viet Cong or communist military our country fought during the war are deceased,” Jared said. “The younger Vietnamese generations express acceptance toward our nation.” During this time, they began to find answers to their many questions about God’s will for their future. For Jared, their

direction was further confirmed by the struggles and hardships that are moving the Vietnamese people toward social and economic change. “Now is an important time to minister to them,” he said with conviction. For Kayla, it was the people who moved her heart. “When we returned home, I missed them so much,” she recalled. “I think it was at that moment that I knew we were on the right path.” Also, they both arrived at one important conclusion. “We agreed that you rarely regret attempting anything in the name of God,” Jared said. “But, you will always wonder what could have been accomplished if you refuse to try at all.” Sponsored by their church, Welcome Missionary Baptist, Jared and Kayla have committed to an 18-month campaign to raise awareness and support for their upcoming move to Thailand. In 2013, they will join their friends and mentors, Danny and Rachel Jones, and begin to reach the Vietnamese by developing a college that is focused on training pastors and missionaries, as well as assisting other missionaries at the Udon Thani Baptist Church in Thailand. Until then, they will travel to churches around the state and country, speaking on behalf of their mission with the hope of gaining awareness and support. Guided by a remarkable trust in God, Jared and Kayla are taking a stand to answer the great commission to “go therefore and make disciples of all the nations” (Matthew 28:19). They will undoubtedly forge many meaningful relationships in His name. Perhaps, we as followers of Christ should pray for such opportunities this Christmas season, and search our hearts for God’s will concerning our lives, whether it takes us across the street or across an ocean. As we can see from Jared and Kayla’s story, God will not only make a way, but also be there ahead of us.  If you would like to support Jared & Kayla Gaboriault, they can be reached at: Welcome Baptist Church 11308 Welcome Church Street Lithia, Florida 33547 813-418-2553 s.e.asiamissions@hotmail.com

MAN GIFTS

5 gifts for the modern man, Christmas 2011

1

TABLET

Apple iPad 2, Android-based, or Kindle Fire

1

$199.00 to $500.00 and up

2

When these things first hit the market people said, “What in the world am I going to do with this?” I already have a laptop and a smartphone; do I really need a tablet? If you’re an on-the-go guy, tablets are great. Throw away the pen and paper; quit typing and squinting on those small phones. Men have man fingers and they shouldn’t be forced to cope with such small things. Jotting down notes, updating your to-do list, and checking email—the tablet does it all. If you don’t like the high price tag, there are now more affordable options to choose from. 2

TV BOXES

Roku Box, Apple TV, or Boxee

3

$59.00 to $179.99

4

The past couple years have brought forth alternatives to cable and satellite TV. With an internet connection and one of these bad boys, you can enjoy the same shows and movies at a much lower cost. Most of the boxes allow you to utilize their “app” system to further enhance your viewing experience. Apps like Netflix (movies) and Hulu Plus (current TV shows) are just some of the choices. Companies like HBO are coming out with their version of “on-demand” that doesn’t tie you down to your cable provider. Most of the subscriptions for the apps start at a reasonable $7.99 per month. Good news…no more monopoly for cable providers. The bad news…if you’re a habitual channel surfer, these systems won’t help.

With 46 compartments, it’s like playing “man Tetris.” The barcode label has a nifty picture that leaves any person with the option to find or buy the perfect tool for each slot. This is brilliant. 5

THE MELODIES OF CHRISTMAS BY KERRY JOHNSON

T

he full force of Florida’s sweltering heat enveloped me as I opened the car door. July was nearly over and fireworks were now just a summer memory while drenching thunderstorms had become a daily afternoon visitor. Humidity filled the air, a lifetime away from where my thoughts roamed. Christmas. It’s my favorite time of year. The weeks following Thanksgiving bring cooler weather, time spent with family, Christmas shopping, travel, hot chocolate, sweaters and jeans, homes decked out in red and green, Christmas trees, and time off from school and work. Every year the season celebrating our Savior’s birth commences with the melodious sound of beloved Christmas music. With a spontaneous giggle, I opened the center console in my car and fingered through CDs, napkins, and extra plastic bags. Finally, my eyes lit on the festive red cover I’d hoped to find. I took the CD out of its case and slid it into the CD player.

“Hark the Herald Angels Sing” filled the inside of the car with an emotional resonance that only the Christmas season can create in our hearts. I cranked the AC up a notch, adjusted the seat back, and let the words filter through my soul. Though it seemed strange to hear Christmas music in July, the song brought me back to that pinnacle day in the Christian faith the day the Son of God, our Creator, willingly became the created in order to redeem creation. “Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled.” Though I love cooler weather, time with family, and giving and receiving gifts, the true meaning of Christmas struck me afresh that muggy summer afternoon. Jesus is the Heart of the Christmas Season and the reason we celebrate.

24   OverflowMag.com   Nov / Dec 2011

Our Savior left Heaven – the perfect, beautiful, sinless design studio for earth – as a ransom for sinners. For our sake, He fulfilled the Law of Moses and offered the most amazing Christmas present ever – God’s magnificent grace. Yet Jesus didn’t make it easy on Himself. He could have requested a Heavenly Fast Pass, forgoing the infant, childhood, and young adult angst we’ve all experienced, but He didn’t. He waited in life’s line like everyone else, grasping the fullness of the human experience and fulfilling dozens of Old Testament prophecies. God’s only Son came into this world as the most helpless human form – a newborn baby. Vulnerable and born to young, inexperienced parents who were temporarily homeless, Jesus gave up Heavenly Glory for the 33 years He walked earth as a man. “Mild He lays His glory by, born that man no more may die; Born to raise the sons of earth, born to give them second birth.” Through faith in our Savior, we’re offered forgiveness of sins and a second birth – a spiritual birth that reconciles us to our Creator. As the music continued and the car cooled down, it struck me that Jesus’ birth deserves remembrance throughout the dog days of summer as well as the cooler,

“For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given . . . And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6 (NKJV) joyous celebrations marking the Christmas season. After all, we can easily forget the human frailty our Savior willingly took on for our sake. “Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.” Hebrews 2:17 (NKJV) Jesus came to earth as a tiny baby and fulfilled His role as Emmanuel, “God with us.” Before His birth, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph to reassure him of God’s sovereignty in his and Mary’s situation. The angel comforted Joseph with a long-ago word from the prophet Isaiah. “‘Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,’ which is translated, ‘God with us’” (Matthew 1:23, NKJV). Isaiah’s words remind us of another facet of God’s awesome plan of salvation, which is those who are saved through faith in Jesus are promised that God is with us. As “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” began to play, I remembered the many times in my life that Jesus had been with me, providing strength, wisdom, comfort, and discernment. “O come, O come, Emmanuel, And ransom captive Israel, That mourns in lonely exile here, Until the Son of God appear.” Driving home that summer afternoon with Christmas music echoing off the interior of my car, I noticed enormous violetgray clouds building in anticipation of a summer storm. Rain was a certainty, though Floridians never know exactly how much rain we’ll receive or how long it will last. Yet, we know the rain will come. “Let us know, Let us pursue the knowledge of the Lord. His going forth is established as the morning; He will come to us like the rain, Like the latter and former rain to the earth.” Hosea 6:3 (NKJV)

What it must have been like for those living around the time of Jesus’ birth, knowing a Savior was coming just as God’s Word promised. The Redeemer of Israel had been prophesied about for hundreds of years. The Old Testament has many different prophecies concerning the Messiah, words that convicted and buoyed the Jewish people through rebellious times, famine, and through the dark of night. “I see Him, but not now; I behold Him, but not near; A Star shall come out of Jacob; A Scepter shall rise out of Israel….” Numbers 24:17 (NKJV) Did God’s chosen people feel excitement, nervousness, anticipation, or uncertainty over the imminent arrival of God’s royal Scepter? Did they look each night to the sky for the Star of David, the promised sign of the Savior? The words of another, familiar Christmas song began, this one about Jesus’ birthplace. I couldn’t help but picture the residents of Bethlehem on the night of Jesus’ birth. Did any of the townspeople spot the young couple walking through the city, searching desperately for a place of lodging that night? Had the people forgotten God’s promise of a Messiah or had they given up hope? “O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by; Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light;

The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.” On the night of Jesus’ birth, over Bethlehem shone the brightest star of all, the Star of David. And within the womb of the anxious young woman was the greatest Light the earth would ever see. This baby was Jesus, the Promised One who would take away the sins of the world, and Bethlehem would be His birthplace. Hundreds of years prior, the prophet Micah wrote of the city’s important role in the life of Jesus. In Micah 5:2, Bethlehem is declared as the birthplace of the coming Messiah: “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting.” (NKJV) As Christmas approaches and the music reminds us of God’s greatest gift, remember what Jesus’ name means and Who He is. He is Emmanuel, God with us. Christmas is the beautiful fulfillment of the promised Messiah and the celebration of Jesus Christ’s birth, proof that God’s Word is true. His Word is unchanging, faithful Truth just as He is unchanging and faithful. Jesus is the promised One Who bore our sins on the cross and gave us His Holy Spirit to guide us as we live for Him. As you celebrate Jesus’ birth this beautiful season, may the music of His love and the melody of God’s grace fill your heart with the true meaning of Christmas—Jesus, born that through Him we have eternal life. “And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21, NKJV). 

HEALTHY LIFE

HOLIDAY CHALLENGE C

an you believe it? It’s already the holiday season and before we know it we’ll be writing 2012 after the date. But, before that happens, we have the opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving for the current blessings in our lives and Christmas for the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ. Here comes the challenge: can we survive the holiday season and all the celebrating that comes with it without having to buy a new, larger wardrobe? This challenge isn’t easy, but with a few preventive strategies in place, it is very doable. Below are some ideas that you may be able to implement to help keep off those unwanted pounds while still being able to enjoy your holiday celebrations.

THANKSGIVING PREEMPTIVE STRATEGIES • • • • •

Eat slowly, which allows your stomach time to alert your brain that you’re full. Stop eating before you’re completely full. Eat smaller portioned meals more frequently throughout the day. Grab a family member or friend and go for a walk, instead of plopping on the couch and dozing off after dinner. Have the desserts you like, but only eat a quarter to half of the served portion.

CHRISTMAS PREEMPTIVE STRATEGIES • • • • •

Eat a small meal before attending a Christmas party. Consume a glass of water between plates of hors d'oeuvres. Choose wisely - don’t feel obligated to try every appetizer or dish at the party. Be free and dance to burn off extra calories, if there is a band or music at the party. Break out of your cocoon and be extra social. The more we talk, the less we have time to eat at a party.

These are just a few ideas to help with the holiday challenge of not gaining unwanted weight. Even if you only implement a few of these strategies, I know they will help keep you in your current wardrobe. The holiday season is also a great time to start an exercise routine if you don’t already have one. Instead of waiting for the New Year to shed off all the unplanned weight gain, start now and prevent those unwanted pounds while still enjoying the holidays. You can start by walking every evening after dinner, and even try doing some knee bends, jumping jacks, and push-ups before your shower a few days per week. If it’s encouragement you need to keep you going, then find a personal trainer that understands the importance of starting off easy and working toward your goal. Regardless, keep it fun and enjoy the benefits that come from exercise. Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas!  The information you receive from the Healthy Life section is not meant to substitute for medical advice. Before starting a new diet or exercise routine, please consult your doctor.

MY ROCK

SCRIPTURES I STAND ON

Romans 5:20 (NKJV)

“...But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more.” We are humans and we sometimes sin even though the Word of God is inside each of us. But, through Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, I know that I'm justified and that I have redemption through His blood, where His grace abounds.

MY ROCK

SCRIPTURES I STAND ON

Philippians 1:6 (ESV)

“And I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” This verse continually calls me to humility because it is Him who began a good work in me. It is not my education, my experience, or my connections. It is all Him. This verse is also Gospel saturated because of the promise that He will bring it to completion. No works, all grace – which produces works.
