Jesus must always be paramount, regardless of the capacity in which we serve the Lord. And if we keep Jesus the focus and the reason for what we are doing, we will touch more lives than we could ever imagine and receive such great blessings from it. Do you have a relationship with God right now? God loves you so much that over two thousand years ago He sent His Son, Jesus, to die on the Cross for you. Dear Friends, Love is in the air! It’s February and Valentine’s Day is fast approaching. I am a romantic, so I like to think about what kind of special evening I can plan for my husband. Many people have a negative view of Valentine’s Day, saying things like, “It’s just a commercial holiday.” However, I think it is whatever you make of it. I choose to view Valentine’s as a great day that reminds us to show love and affection to our spouse. Unfortunately, we do need to be reminded from time to time. With the busyness of life, we sometimes forget to show our spouses just how much they are loved. Talking about being loved…you don’t want to miss “To Be Loved” on page 8. Have you ever asked yourself, "Am I worthy of God's love?" Surprisingly, this is a question that many people have asked. In Chris Cherp’s article, learn about how God personally loves each of us and how we can gain understanding of His love by looking to the Cross. I listened to a teaching recently and it was talking about David and the men who served him. This teaching revealed how some of these men served for their own benefit, some served for the kingdom, and some served for the king. It got me thinking about us, the children of God. Why are we serving? Are we serving for Jesus? In our ministries, it is not what we are doing that matters; what matters is the condition of our hearts. Are our hearts for the King of kings?

As I was sitting to write this letter, I asked my three-year-old son what I should tell the readers this month. He very boldly replied, “Great listening.” How very profound for such a young boy! I suspect part of the reasoning behind his response resulted from his memories of my husband and I often telling him to listen when someone is speaking to him. “Open your ears Christopher” is a common phrase in our house! This reminded me of the article, “Tongue in Cheek,” on page 24. Kerry shares the revelation God gave her on the power of the tongue. We can use the tongue for good or for evil. One of the ways we can prevent using it for harm is to do less talking and more listening. This is where the “Great listening” comes in. The more we are listening, the less talking we are doing. Check out Kerry’s article and learn more ways on how you can use your tongue to glorify God. Featured this month is Organic Life Coffeehouse and Bakery. I urge you to read, “More than a Coffee Shop” on page 12. This is an intriguing story of how God is using a local coffee shop to touch lives in our community for Jesus Christ. As you read, be encouraged and inspired, knowing that when you follow God’s plan for your life you will never be disappointed. e are all creatures designed to be loved and accepted. God, the creator of all things, was the One who pieced every one of us together, making each of us individually unique. God created us so that He would have a family to love and care for. Regrettably, Adam and Eve, being the ancestry of all mankind, chose poorly and separated mankind from God for a very long time (Genesis 3). The good news is that God, knowing the end from the beginning, had a plan all along to bring His family home. That’s exactly what He did over two thousand years ago when He sent His only begotten Son to earth to die on the Cross for us (1 John 4:10).

BROKEN HEART If you’re like me, then you've probably experienced, or may actually be experiencing, the heart hardening tribulations of life that can move one to believe that love is only a fairy tale. I thank God that He loves me so much. He continued to send the right people into my life, helping me to get through some of the darkest times I can remember. For me, it was the reality of not being treasured by

someone I held in high esteem that placed my heart in a freezer for almost a decade of my life. When I would hear people speak about the love of Jesus for me, I would laugh to myself and think, how naïve. Even after years of healing and allowing others to approach the sheltered place of my heart, I still never fully recovered from my past hurt. That is, until I began to clearly see what our Father God did for us through Jesus Christ (Hebrews 10:10). Someone very dear to my heart gave me a Joel Osteen CD to listen to. At first, I thanked them and threw the CD in the back of my truck, never intending to give it a moment’s consideration. Then, the large company I formerly worked for went through a merger. During this merger, I witnessed the firing of many friends and colleagues who were treated like criminals. My job and success there was my security, my solid ground if you will. But, then, it was suddenly turning into sand all around me. This is when I came across that CD in the back of my truck and decided to give it a listen. That was the beginning of my revelation of God’s love for each and every one of us personally. Think about how many parents have taken the time to count every hair on their children’s heads like our Father in Heaven does (Luke 12:7). I began to learn that God cares about the smallest details in our lives and that He wants us to succeed in life. "Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom” (Luke 12:32, NKJV). He has His hands out offering His kingdom to all those who believe; all we have to do is accept.

WORTHY OF HIS LOVE During this time, I wondered if I was even worthy to be loved by God. I thought, “I'm only human and make mistakes daily.” I would ponder how this righteous God could overlook all my faults and failures. Then,

He began to share with me that this was the exact reason He sent His Son. “In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him” (1 John 4:9, NKJV). Think about it! God sent His only Son to die for a bunch of selfindulgent, self-occupied sinners so that we would not end up in hell but with Him, for eternity. Because of Jesus and His perfect work, those who choose to believe on His Name are worthy. “But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe” (Romans 3:21-22, NKJV). It is because of God’s love for us that we are eternally forgiven and in right standing with Him—not only until our next sin, but forever. God is just in making all who believe in His Son righteous because Jesus, who knew no sin, took all our sins on Himself and was judged by God (2 Corinthians 5:21). I now know that God looks at every believer through His Son, and He considers them His very own children whom He loves (Romans 8:16). Regardless of our past or present,


you and I are worthy to be loved by God. We are worthy to receive His innumerable blessings that He has for us. This is all possible because of Jesus and His perfect work of cleansing us of all our sins at the Cross. Jesus did this for us because He loves us, individually.

LOVING FATHER Most parents want the best for their children; this can range from clothing to education. To have a better understanding of how much our Father God loves us, start looking through the eyes of a parent – the Perfect Parent. “…You're at least decent to your own children. So don't you think the God who conceived you in love will be even better?” (Matthew 7:11, MSG). My own children know they will be fed when they are hungry, they know they will be clothed when they are cold, and they know they will be taken care of when they are overcoming an illness. So why do we not expect the same and even better from our Father God? The challenge of verbally expressing God’s individual love for you—in the few words that I have to write here—is one that can only be achieved with the help of God. I pray as I write this article that everyone who reads these words will begin to experience God’s love for them in real, practical ways. I pray that each of you will increase in your understanding of God’s love for you. I believe that in turn, the love of God will overflow in your lives, touching those in your sphere of influence. You will share Jesus with others not because you are being forced to, but because of your genuine excitement about God’s goodness and love for you. This February, whether you have someone special in your life or not to celebrate Valentine’s Day with, I encourage you to invite Jesus into your heart and relationships. Allow God to be your Valentine and watch as you begin to experience His overflowing, overwhelming love for you. Remember, God is Love (1 John 4:8). Who better to learn about loving relationships from than God Himself? It’s important not to gauge God’s love for you through your circumstances but through the Cross at Calvary. Circumstances will change, but God’s love for you will never change (Hebrews 13:8). Begin asking God to show you His love and watch out because He will. Have a happy Valentine’s and a month full of God’s love. ■ Glory!

WORKOUT WITH YOUR VALENTINE BY KELLY MOTHERSHEAD

I

t can be very tempting to eat that box of chocolates, enjoy that romantic dinner, and skip your gym routine this Valentine’s Day, but don’t let your love get you off track with your fitness plans for the New Year. Following these simple tips and ideas will keep you on track and provide some quality time for you and your Valentine. The two of you may be at different levels and have different goals, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t exercise together. Couples spend most of their time apart due to careers and other responsibilities. Instead of hitting the gym alone, plan a workout time that fits both of your schedules. You’ll reach your goals without sacrificing one-on-one time. Also, make exercise one of your shared hobbies. Praise from your partner is a BIG motivator. Encourage and praise each other; it’ll help both of you remain consistent and take care of one another. Your body is your temple, taking care of it shows that you care about your VALENTINE enough to be your best for years to come. Additionally, exercise produces chemicals in the brain that evoke feelings of happiness, reduce stress, and increase libido. Here are five ideas to get you started: 1. 2.

Sign up for a class together (dance, Yoga, 5K training, swimming, or sports lessons). Walk or run outside together (try some intervals). Take a morning walk of gratitude. Call it a “Thank you” walk. Strength train at the gym together. “Work in” with one another between sets, so while you rest between sets your partner “works in.”

Enjoy outdoor activities together (camping, hiking, rock climbing, rafting, canoeing, or cycling). Change up your routine. Be open-minded and try new things. Try your partner’s workout and have them try yours.

You can also try this Circuit: Spend five minutes warming up before your workout and five minutes cooling down after your workout. For each exercise, try 8-15 repetitions. For each stretch, do it one time for 20 seconds. Work at YOUR own level. Complete the entire circuit three times. ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■

T

here’s nothing like the aroma of freshly brewed coffee, no matter the time of day. We’ve all spent time in one coffee shop or another enjoying a steaming cup of tea or coffee. You may have a favorite spot to meet a friend, read a book, or get some work done while your nose takes in the robust and delicious scents. You may not be aware, however, of those around you as you bask in your cup of goodness. There is a particular coffeehouse in the Bay Area, where customers are uniquely kind to one another, the employees beam with a special radiance, and some of the best music lingers. This place stands out amongst the crowd. It has all the glorious aromas, comfy furniture, pastries, and Wi-Fi that other coffee shops have, but the biggest difference is the powerful presence of God evident there. The love of Jesus literally leaks from every door. Have you ever been to Organic Life Coffeehouse and Bakery in Lutz? If you have, then you know – it’s so much more than a coffee shop.

ON GOOD GROUNDS Co-owner, Peter Davidson, honestly admitted that he had never brewed a cup of coffee in his life when God dropped the vision in his heart to open up a coffee shop. Supported by his soon-to-be wife, Shadia, and his family, Peter was ready to leave the security of the business world and take a leap of faith. With years of restaurant experience from previous jobs, he was prepared to roll up his sleeves and get his hands dirty. Now, that’s faith. Was that step hard to take? Peter recalls saying at the time, “If God really has a purpose and a plan it doesn’t have to make sense.” His brother-in-law, Glenn Deller, with a background in business, was inspired by the movement of God in Peter’s life and wanted to be a part of it. Glenn, also a co-owner, referred to himself as a “newbie” when talking about Jesus and said, “It was the Lord’s way of saying you need to be closer to Me because I’ve got plans.” Peter and Glenn are continually embracing the direction God is taking them and the coffee shop. After all, the personal

and community impact have gone beyond what either of them ever expected. Originally named A Cup of Organic, the shop opened in August of 2010 with a few additional partners who have since moved on to follow God’s direction for their own lives. Though there have been several changes, a huge learning curve, and some challenges, Peter and Glenn both continue to look to Jesus for their strength. They expressed the notion that giving up control to God and following His lead is the only way to move forward. “We’re always putting Him first,” Glenn said. April 2011 brought not only a new name to their shop, but a

significantly expanded menu, a focus on local ministries, and a jump on the local music scene.

BREWING A BETTER MENU With the determination to learn how to make a latte, Peter spent hours the night before opening day trying to create a balanced blend of espresso and steamed milk. Standing in a puddle of coffee at midnight, he decided to call it a night. Peter prayed over the last latte mixture he concocted, put it in the fridge, and headed home. The next day it was an absolute hit. “People loved it,” Peter said. The businessman-turned-barista invented the house latte. Not bad for someone

who didn’t own any type of brewing machine before his adventure into coffee land. A year and a half later, Organic Life has mastered more than just the house latte. Their newly expanded menu boasts of high quality products with organic and all natural foods, including gourmet coffee and loose leaf teas from around the world. The delectable and fresh food served ranges from healthy breakfast wraps, omelettes, and handmade sandwiches to pizza, soups, and salads. Each day, their in-house bakery offers fresh muffins, cookies, bread, bagels, and pastries. Craving something cold and blended? Organic Life serves tasty milkshakes, smoothies, and frappes. There is literally something for everyone on the menu. They are committed to using superior ingredients in every item served. If you stop in for a visit, be patient because such scrumptious creations take some time to make.

SPILLING THE BEANS ABOUT JESUS So what does Jesus have to do with lattes and mochas? Well, everything, according to Peter and Glenn. The coffeehouse is a business that serves food and drinks, but it is also a ministry that reaches out to its community. With several scriptures hanging on the wall, Jesus is no stranger to the daily activities at Organic Life. The person behind the counter might not shove Romans 10:9 down your throat, but they will give you a warm smile, sprinkle some love in your coffee, and ask about your day. If you’re paying attention, you will know this is a Christian coffee shop, but it’s not always about the words they speak. Jesus is embodied in their actions towards their customers and in subtleties, like Hebrews 11:6 donning the cover of the menu and John 10:10 on their t-shirts, which plant seeds in the hearts of all who enter. This creates an atmosphere of love and acceptance. At Organic Life, the staff are not the only ones who would be happy to tell you about Jesus Christ; the customers minister to each other too. This happens on a regular basis. Bible study groups meet there, pray, and delve into the Word. If they notice someone hurting or curious, they reach out. “All of the customers inject their own dynamic into the place,” Glenn said. There could be a few different prayer groups meeting at once, and you will hear the wonderful name of Jesus lifted up in prayer. These aren’t mumbled prayers, Peter explained; these people are unashamed of Jesus and feel comfortable in expressing their love for God at Organic Life.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING... Peter said, “It’s great to see people come in here and tell us that their life has been changed by this place. We haven’t really done anything. We are not the ones that changed their lives, but by us being here and doing what God called us to do, it made an impact, not through us, but through Christ.” They often hear testimonies of what God is doing at the coffee shop, and it reassures them that they are on the right path.

STEEPING IN GOD'S GLORY DAILY On any given day, you will find diverse groups of people or individuals spending time at Organic Life just soaking up the Word, worshipping His Glory, and marinating in His Goodness. There is always something going on. Monday and Thursday evenings are dedicated to the youth. Organic Life provides a safe and secure environment for youth groups and young adults. The gatherings have grown from about six to over forty-five teenagers. Glenn explained, “They’re comfortable and they share how to bring Jesus into managing the trials of a teenager.” There aren’t many public places in the community, besides the church, where young Christians feel comfortable to hang out and study the Word together. Glenn expressed the fulfillment he and his wife, Christine, get from serving the youth on these nights and taking care of them. Many of the kids will go up to them and say, “Don’t ever close.” Glenn said, “It’s an amazing feeling.” Wednesday nights you’ll find women’s Bible study groups there, and on Thursday mornings, Organic Life hosts the Central Pasco Christian Business Connections group. The other evenings are filled with the sounds of Heaven—Christian music, praising God. Tuesday is Open Mic Night, and they have live music on Friday and Saturday from 7 p.m. until closing. “I think the food and espressos are amazing, because it is a tool we have to draw in people that wouldn’t come here for the specific reason that we are a Christian coffeehouse. But, [while they’re here] they may be introduced to God, the Gospel, and music that changes their life,” Peter said.

MUSIC & COFFEE God has brought some gifted musicians through the doors of Organic Life; some play for fun or participate in worship at their church. They’ve had several new artists and even some local seasoned musicians perform there. “We’ve gotten musicians who (typically get paid to play) never even mention money, knowing that it’s not about that,” Peter said. “[They] are just so humble. This is an enjoyment for them to spend time with God.” There is a tremendous amount of musical talent in Tampa Bay, and God has really put a passion in Peter’s heart for Christian artists. He said, “I see this place as being a launching pad for a lot of Christian musicians.” With the help of friend and fellow musician, Rolson "Rosco" Ragbir, some amazing bands have come through the coffee shop and will continue to do so in 2012. Peter talked about how much Rosco and the rest of these musicians have blessed the coffee shop and the people who attend. When an artist or band is playing, the presence of God is so thick you can feel it. The music is uplifting and creates such a beautiful atmosphere for worship. It is really a

ome people are reluctant to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior because of their past, current habits, or lifestyle. You may be thinking, "How can God look past my mistakes, my addictions, and the way I live my life right now." The beautiful thing about Jesus giving His life for us upon that Cross is that He was, is, and will continue to be the ultimate sacrifice for everything and anything we could ever do. When Jesus' blood was shed at Calvary it covered every sin for all time. He took our place on the judgment seat. When we accept Jesus into our hearts He becomes our representative to God. Through Jesus Christ, God sees us as forgiven. You might feel you are unworthy of God's forgiveness because you still have some bad habits. Let's set the record straight: Jesus will transform you inside and out when you allow Him to, but it will take time. As you let the realization of God's love engulf you, addictions, bad habits, and wrong living will melt away. John the Baptist baptized Jesus in the Jordan River and in John 1:32, he told of how he saw the Spirit descend like a dove from Heaven and remain on Jesus. God sent the Holy Spirit to help Jesus during His ministry on earth. Then in John 14, before Jesus ascended

into Heaven, He told the disciples He will give us another Helper that will live on the inside of us. Just as God did for Jesus, He sent the Holy Spirit to help us. Once we receive Jesus, the Holy Spirit dwells in each of us. He is our Comforter, Helper, and Prince of Peace. Let God's love overtake you and let His peace abide in you. Soon, your past, your unhealthy habits, and anything else holding you back will dissolve. Won't you accept Jesus' help today? If you want to accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior, say this prayer aloud: Father God, I come before You in the Name of Jesus. Your Word says that “whoever calls on the Name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21, NKJV) and “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9, NKJV). Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me. It is because of Your love that You don't want me to be condemned and punished for my sins. Thank You for sending Your beloved Son, Jesus, to die

for me on the cross. Jesus took my sins, penalties, and all my curses and in return gave me His blessing, righteousness, and favor. He got what I deserved so I can receive what He deserves - all good things! Jesus' blood washes me clean from every sin (past, present, and future). On the third day, Jesus rose from the dead and conquered death. Father, I thank You that when You look at me, You choose to no longer remember my sins and that You see me in all the beauty and righteousness of Jesus. When I went to see the movie Courageous I had low expectations, being that it was a Christian movie. During the movie, I laughed out loud, cringed with anticipation of what was to happen next, and actually cried almost uncontrollably. There are very few movies I have ever seen in my life that were able to draw out so many different emotions, especially to the degree where it was obvious to those around me. I encourage anyone who is a parent or is going to be a parent, especially a father, to see Courageous. It will give you a new perspective on parenthood and on the goodness of God and how involved He really is in our daily lives. had always struggled in school. Exasperated by it, my parents sent me away to a boys' boarding school (grades 10-12) to help overcome my academic weaknesses. I disliked everything about it and found myself in the disciplinarian’s office on a regular basis. Surprisingly, we became good friends, and he led me to accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior during my senior year. After I graduated, he asked me to call him by his first name – Jordan. However, with the newfound freedom of college life, I decided to make up for my miserable three years in high school. I put God aside and majored in work, Karate, partying, and occasionally school. Jordan wrote me on a regular basis and warned me that if I centered my life on anything other than Jesus Christ, I would “thirst again.” He was referring to John 4:13-14 (NASB) in which Jesus stated, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.” I found this to be true as each time I centered my life around anything other than Christ, it left me empty. For instance, I made Karate my god and even achieved a black belt my senior year, but I still felt empty inside and unfulfilled. A short time thereafter, I tore a muscle in my leg and my dream of setting up numerous Karate studios ended. Devastated, I returned to visit Jordan and again prayed for God to forgive my sins. I rededicated my life to Christ. This time the commitment lasted, and I finally began to feel fulfillment in my life. After college and graduate school, I got married. Two years later, we were


expecting our first child. A sonogram revealed that the baby was a boy, and we were both ecstatic. I planned to name him after my father who I always admired for his giving attitude towards our family. That year I was on the building committee to raise money for our new church. I gave more than I could afford but was confident that God would honor my sacrifice with commissions in brokering commercial real estate. Later that year, a friend asked me to sponsor him by helping him get a plane ticket to Switzerland for a mission trip. I decided to raise the money by organizing a large dinner party at an area hotel and featuring an uplifting Christian speaker. Surprisingly, the net proceeds totaled the exact amount of the plane ticket. He left for Switzerland a short time afterward. On October 16 of that year, I rushed my wife to the hospital for the delivery of our first child. At 1:30 p.m., a tremendous fear engulfed me as I waited for my son to be delivered. It was as if God was telling me in His still, small voice that my son was having severe problems being born, and the doctor and nurse didn’t realize it yet. I did not say anything to my wife or doctor but began silently praying like never before. An hour later, my son was born without any complications. I dismissed the feelings that I thought had come from God as just the normal fears that a first-time father probably experiences. Months later, my friend returned from his mission trip to Switzerland. The first thing he did when he got home was to call me and ask, “Jack, when was your son born?” I told him, “October 16 at 2:30 p.m.” He replied, “That’s exactly what I thought.” He went on to explain that at dinner that night in Switzerland, which would have been 1:30 p.m. (EST), he suddenly felt impressed by the Holy Spirit that our son was going through life-threatening complications and may not be born alive. Along with the missionaries, they stopped dinner and prayed for one solid hour until they felt God assuring them that everything was okay. The moment they stopped was at 2:30 p.m. (EST), the exact time of my son’s birth. Upon hearing this, tears began running down my cheeks as I knew God had intervened for us with a miracle. The next year finances were very tight. We had a new child and all the expenses that accompanied him. In the previous year, I had made just the exact amount that I had given to the church. I prayed, asking God, “Why did I not make more and why did You not honor my giving?” I’ll never forget His answer. God asked me in that still, quiet voice, “How much money would you have taken in exchange for the successful birth of your son?” I answered that I would have taken my healthy son over all the money in the world! I then realized that I was calculating blessings from God only in monetary terms and should have remembered my son’s birth in which God had obviously intervened. “God, why do You put up with me?” was my next question. In appreciation, I told God that whatever He wanted me to do, I would do it, and wherever He wanted me to go, I would go. Later that year, I closed a large real-estate deal and our finances improved dramatically. Four years later, God put my new commitment to the test. I was praying and reading the Bible and was suddenly impressed by God to get involved with a prison ministry. So, I went with my church to their regular Saturday morning service at a maximum security prison. About fifty inmates attended the service, and no guards were present. My attention was drawn immediately to eight unhappy and angry looking guys in the back. As a friend of mine began delivering the sermon, a young man seated in the front row began growling all through the message. Afterwards, I was amazed to see him come forward and give his life to Jesus as he yelled out to God to forgive him for his sins and come into his life.

At this stage, I was feeling pretty good about the service since the young man went from growling to crying out to God. God then spoke to me in His still, quiet voice saying that we were not finished yet and to go back to the intimidating eight inmates in the back and get them to come up front to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior. I immediately answered, “No, God, this is my first trip with this group and one of my friends would be better at this than me.” He kept speaking to me that He wanted me to do it. “Okay God, I’ll do it, but You have to protect me from harm because I know these inmates despised this Christian sermon.” I walked towards the rear of the chapel and yelled above the music as loud as I could, “Okay, you guys, I know that God has been speaking to each of you to come and follow me to the front of the chapel and dedicate your lives to Him.” I turned around and headed to the front fully expecting no one to follow me. My two prayers before reaching the front were, “Oh God deliver me from a knife in my back and help my friends not to remember my embarrassing outburst since I know no one is following me forward.” Reaching the front, I turned to see all eight inmates following me—most of whom were crying. They knelt down, asking God for forgiveness of their sins and dedicating their lives to Him. Five minutes later, the guards came in and were astonished. From their reaction, I could tell that these were some of the most notorious men in the prison. I asked the guards to let them stay for ten more minutes and afterwards, they would not have any more trouble with them. They granted my request, and ten minutes later, the prisoners returned to their cells changed men. Other tests to my “all-in” commitment to God involved my nine mission trips to Nicaragua. After preaching in one service that lasted until 12:30 a.m., a guy on a motorcycle came to take me back to the hotel. I am terrified of riding on motorcycles! Seeing no alternatives, I climbed on the back, trusting God. He sped down the cobblestone streets going about 60 miles per hour with me yelling, “Despacio!” which means slowly in Spanish. In the darkness, we came upon what appeared to be a serious motorcycle accident. To my astonishment, my driver zoomed past the bloody body and motorcycle lying in the road without a thought to help. Later, he explained to me, via an interpreter, that it was a setup. They probably used ketchup for blood, and he saw five guys hiding in the bushes prepared to ambush, rob, and possibly kill any good Samaritans who stopped to help. Once again God’s protective hand was upon me. Following God is not always easy. But when we get out of the way, God can work in us and through us for His glory. I am thankful that Jordan followed God’s guidance in leading me to Christ. In his honor, my second son is named Jordan. God recently called me and my wife to be missionaries in Africa. We are eternally grateful for what He has done in our lives and for the opportunities to serve Him in everyday life and on the foreign mission field. ■

THE ULTIMATE POWER WITHIN BY LOREN MURFIELD, Ph.D.

“I

pray . . . that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us” (Ephesians 3:16-20, NIV). I never thought that, as the 5th of 8 children, I had much to offer. It was easy to sink into the background when one brother was the scholar, another the athlete, and yet another the troublemaker. I gave myself excuses, neglected my potential, and settled for working manual labor jobs instead of going to college. I put “my light under a bushel” making excuses and decisions to ignore the power residing within. That is, until one day, with few options available, I said, “Why not? Life can’t get much worse.” I made the choice to take the step and pursue my college degree in earnest at age 31. Even then, I let my own limitations restrict my success until I realized I could make the Dean’s List. Suddenly, I came to my senses and realized what was possible. I increased my focus and doubled my diligence, and soon even graduating with honors was possible. That opened up graduate school and college teaching – my newfound desire. Little by little, I realized what God had in store as one opportunity appeared after another. A few years later, with Ph.D. in hand, I was teaching, writing, coaching, and speaking. Soon, I wrote a book, which was quickly followed by nine more (eight in one year). In hindsight, I realize that it was the little decisions to keep looking, striving, and working

that made the difference. There were no giant steps, just small yet significant ones. It wasn’t done to be proud or arrogant, surely not to be better than others, but simply to accept the opportunities that God had provided. God has done amazing things because I did not settle for what others thought I should do or what I knew was more comfortable. Although we often don’t think about it, we do have God’s ultimate power within us! Yes, each and every one of us, who has accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, has the Lord dwelling inside of us. We are created for His purpose and are empowered to do what is considered impossible—obliterating obstacles and eclipsing self-imposed limitations. When we unleash God’s ultimate power within, we often see when others are blinded, act where others are apathetic, and affect when others are ineffective. We can do phenomenal things for the right reasons. This is no ordinary power—it is the ultimate power and when we unleash it, the impossible becomes possible. That, my friends, is exhilarating! Unleashing God’s ultimate power within, however, is our choice. Although God has made that choice possible and places tremendous opportunities at our fingertips, it is up to us to act. I was coasting along, making excuses for my limited life, before I made the decision to focus on what God had for me. I was like many others who do not sense the opportunities in front of them, failing to see, hear, smell, touch, or taste what is within their reach. Failing to tap into God’s ultimate power, we adopt the excuses of the world, enabling our former selves that are ripe with disabling attitudes. Yet that one choice, that one little action quickly changes our perspective, direction, and ultimately, our destination and legacy. I can only imagine how sad, disappointing, and frustrating my life was to God before I left the ordinary behind. I’m glad I made that choice. Imagine what He can do with you. Imagine what knowledge you can acquire, what skills you can hone, what

TONGUE IN CHEEK BY KERRY JOHNSON

“WOULD YOU HOLD THAT THING DOWN?” In my novocaine and fear-induced state, the words sounded surreal. The entire left side of my face was numb, and drool was dripping out of the corner of my mouth. The dentist looming over me was concentrating deeply on his task when he muttered the sarcastic words to the hygienist suctioning out my mouth. The “thing” getting in his way was my tongue. I have a personal confession to make. My tongue is on the big side. Okay, it’s very big. I’ve frustrated dentists, grossed out elementary school friends, and even won a contest with this tongue—a who-can-touch-their-tongueto-their-nose contest. I can. What exactly is the tongue, and what is its purpose? The tongue is a powerful muscle on the bottom of our mouths. Its main function as an organ is tasting food since much of the upper surface of the tongue is covered in taste buds. It’s made up of groups of muscles and, like the heart, it’s always working. The tongue is also able to expertly bind and contort itself to form letters when we speak. That’s the kicker. The tongue is absolutely necessary for speech. I’ve come to realize the amazing power and deadly influence my tongue can have. It’s the bridge between my

heart and thoughts directly to the people around me. The tongue can be a tool to inflict pain or make someone’s day. It can bless and it can curse. As God laid this on my heart to write, a fearful uncertainty settled in my chest. Not me, Lord. The excuses came fast and furious. Lord, I am the LAST person who should write about taming the tongue! Hypocrite is spelled M-E. Lord, I have diarrhea of the mouth! Please don’t ask me to do this! Still, I felt God pressing on my heart to write about my tongue. And when I read Proverbs 21:23 one morning, the words washed over me like a holy fire: “Whoever guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from troubles" (NKJV). Was I guarding my tongue for Jesus?

I want to guard my tongue in order to protect my soul – for You, Lord. What kind of words do I say? Or, for the writers out there, type? Words that bless or words that curse? “The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly, But the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness” (Proverbs 15:2, NKJV). Am I wise or a fool? Gossip, slander, and lying are foolish and self-serving. They cause harm to the speaker and the hearer, and they’re welcome ammunition for the devil. Words spoken in love, praise of others, expressions of gratitude, and encouragement build others up. “Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, Sweetness to the soul and health to the bones” (Proverbs 16:24, NKJV). Many verses talk about the tendency of our tongues to be perverse. The word perverse describes something, or someone, that has turned from what is good or right and becomes corrupt (www.Dictionary.com). “He who has a deceitful heart finds no good, And he who has a perverse tongue falls into evil” (Proverbs 17:20, NKJV). Our heart


perceptive” (Proverbs 17:27-28, NKJV). Go on a word diet and listen instead of speaking. Words are compared to arrows shot out of a bow because they fly fast and furious, especially when they’re emotionally driven. “In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, But he who restrains his lips is wise” (Proverbs 10:19, NKJV). Generally, I’ve found the higher quantity of words, the lower quality they become. I’m learning to be more like my quiet, thoughtful husband – talk less,

encouragement in the Lord or a Bible verse that was helpful for you in a similar situation. As a wife and mother, I seek to align my life with Proverbs 31. “She opens her mouth with wisdom, And on her tongue is the law of kindness” (Proverbs 31:26, NKJV). When we mix godly wisdom with edification and coat our words in love, God can accomplish much through us as mothers, wives, and friends. Finally, the most important activity we are to do with our tongue is praise God. “Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, And to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy To God our Savior, Who alone is wise, Be glory and majesty, Dominion and power, Both now and forever. Amen” (Jude 1:24-25, NKJV). Only through Jesus’ perfect sacrifice on the cross can I ever

condition is evidenced by the words coming off our tongue. “A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, But perverseness in it breaks the spirit” (Proverbs 15:4, NKJV). I pray my tongue will be a “tree of life” and not cause me to "fall into evil." When we criticize others, who are made in God’s image and whom He loves as much as He loves us, we’re using our tongue for evil. How can I use my tongue for God? How do we learn to have a “wholesome tongue” and keep it from causing harm? There are three important exercises we can do with our tongues to glorify God: The first exercise I recommend is not using your tongue. How I struggle with this! Remember as a child when your mom told you to, “Bite your tongue?” Though I wouldn’t recommend that, I do recommend keeping your tongue still and giving your ears a workout instead. “He who has knowledge spares his words, And a man of understanding is of a calm spirit. Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; When he shuts his lips, he is considered

listen carefully, and consider more before speaking. The result is less complaining and criticizing...less “word garbage.” The second exercise I recommend for the tongue is using it for good—for God. In the words of Peter Parker (aka Spiderman), “With great power comes great responsibility.” We house power in our tongues. Using that power for the encouragement and edification of others is God-glorifying and trains our hearts for selflessness. “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers” (Ephesians 4:29, NKJV). Allow the Holy Spirit to add a measure of joy to someone’s life through your words. Encourage a friend by complimenting their family or children, praise their parenting or homeschooling success, or pray together. Edification can also be a word of

be considered “faultless.” He is the most precious gift ever given or received! How can I not give Him constant praise as a result? "Praise the Lord! Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever" (Psalm 106:1, NKJV). Although God doesn’t need our praise, His Word testifies that He wants to hear from His children. “Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name” (Hebrews 13:15, NKJV). Praise and thanksgiving offered to Jesus will lift our eyes off ourselves and our circumstances and onto Him where they belong. I've learned that praising God has a wonderful purpose. Our faith is strengthened and purified when we praise Him in the dark moments of our lives. “I cried to Him with my mouth, And He was extolled with my tongue” (Psalm 66:17, NKJV). When I’m speechless before God, whether through the trials or the blessings of this life, praise should never cease to roll off my tongue for Him and the wonders of His works. After all, Jesus’ actions were drenched in grace for me, and my life should be drenched in praise for Him. Ultimately, my prayer is that my tongue will speak life-giving words from my Savior. S

tephen Del Castillo is a man on a mission to empower, teach, train, and serve those who God puts in his path. In recent years, Steve has dedicated his life and business to Christ. He brings a great love for Jesus Christ and thirty years of specialized martial arts training to the Tampa Bay area. His training in martial arts started early. By age thirteen, he was training in American Karate, soon followed by Tae Kwon Do and his first of many black belts. He celebrated his eighteenth birthday by jumping into Honduras with the 82nd Airborne, and he hasn’t slowed down yet. His service with the United States Army afforded Steve an opportunity to indulge his dual passions of education and martial arts. He was already an apt student of Chinese Kenpo when the Army sent him to the University of Tampa on a Green to Gold (enlisted to officer) scholarship. During his stint at University of Tampa, Steve pursed double majors and graduated with degrees in both Philosophy and Communications. He also opened his first martial arts school, teaching Tae Kwon Do from the University’s McNiff Activity Center. After graduation, 2nd Lieutenant Del Castillo was assigned a tour in Germany. The Army’s education system allowed the young officer to pursue a Master’s degree in Counseling and Psychotherapy on the University of Maryland’s European Campus. God was preparing Stephen Del Castillo and arming him with both the insight and physical skills he would need to mold others into champions. During his next tour of duty in New Jersey, 1st Lieutenant Del Castillo pursued cross training in martial arts, adding Muay Thai, Zen Shi Do, and additional Karate styles.
