Dear Friends, Easter is here with the cute bunnies and dresses, baskets full of candy and gifts, exciting Easter egg hunts, fun family gatherings, and more. However, let’s not forget the most important part of Easter, Jesus Christ. Our Savior lives! Christ is risen! Like us on facebook and let us know how you and your family celebrate Jesus on Easter Sunday. Have you ever wondered how to talk with your children about the true meaning of Easter and what Jesus endured at the cross? In the article “Jesus Won” on page 12, read how a loving mother with the Lord’s help explained how and why Jesus defeated death and what that means for believers. Easter is a great time to remind ourselves to place our focus on Jesus and on His obedience at the cross that makes us righteous. Let’s take our focus off ourselves and our own actions. We need to immerse ourselves in Jesus. By focusing on Him, we are transformed from glory to glory by the Spirit of the Lord. Praise Jesus! I am super excited about our cover story this month. We are featuring Tampa Bay Ray’s Ben Zobrist and his beautiful wife, Julianna, who is a Christian artist. We had the honor of sitting down with them and talking about their lives, faith, and careers. They are an amazing couple with a great love for Jesus Christ and an overflowing love for sharing the Good News with others. Ben and Julianna have been graced with talent for Christ’s glory, and they are quick to take the focus off themselves and place it on the One who deserves all the glory. Read their story on page 14. I encourage you to go out and cheer Ben and the Rays on. I know it would be a fun family day and our family intends to go! Depending on the game, you can get tickets for as low as $9.00 each (plus applicable fees). Also, check out Julianna’s new album, Say It Now, which you can get on iTunes this month.
I have had to make some very challenging decisions about my life and my calling. The Lord has brought me through many steps the last couple of years, and I have learned quite a bit. Recently, He has told me to take a larger step than I thought I was ready for. However, the Lord revealed to me that I couldn’t step into the “water” unless I was at the edge. And over the last couple of years, He was bringing me to the edge. Then, He said to me, “In My perfect timing, I will lead you to step into the water.” God has been preparing me, and now, He wants me to step into what He has planned for my life. Are you waiting for your calling? Do you think what you are doing now doesn’t matter? Making it to your calling is a process and each step along the way is important. Wherever you are in life isn’t useless. Learn more about this topic in “Living into Your Calling” by Alex Corrick on page 22. JUDGES 5:3 (NKJV)
"...I will sing praise to the LORD God of Israel."
EVEN WHEN IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE What a challenge being obedient to God can be at times! I recently found myself questioning a tug in my heart to stop one Bible study class I had been attending for many years. Maybe you would question that too. All I know is that He told me to stop and to trust Him. I didn’t want to stop. As I argued with God, He kept reminding me to trust Him. He encouraged me with Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV): “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.” In addition, He prompted me with Isaiah 55:9 (NKJV): “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.” God also had been prompting me to write. Some of my girlfriends were encouraging me to submit some of my writings to be published.
I didn’t have the confidence to follow through, but finally I surrendered. I submitted a story and they liked it and actually published it! At the time, when God was directing me to stop my Bible study class, we were studying the book of Jonah. Our homework talked about how “staying put” can be disobedience to God when we know He has told us to leave. Every day for a week, the conviction that I had to stop that class tore at my heart! When I finally obeyed God, I was blessed abundantly above and beyond measure! The publisher contacted me in less than 48 hours of my obedience for another writing opportunity! No detail of our life is hidden from God. When we obey Him, even when it doesn’t make sense, we will see His plan unfold in our lives. Our Father God longs to give us the desires of our hearts. After all, He is the One who puts the desire in us. >>>D.K., Thonotosassa
THE GREAT ADVISOR I had to go into a hostile environment for work not too long ago. In my line of business, I am indirectly responsible for the safety and wellbeing of millions of people. Unfortunately, this day something happened and all the fingers were being pointed at me and my company. Before I arrived at the location in question, I asked the Lord for wisdom and thanked Him for the special, uncommon favor I have because of Him. Upon entering the manager's office, I was immediately assaulted with verbal firings from him in front of all his men. An hour later, after some lab testing (with an audience of about fifteen individuals), the manager apologized to me and asked me to join them in an emergency meeting to find out the root cause of the problem. He had realized that it was not my fault. Talk about God's grace and wisdom! I was not only able to prove scientifically that my company and I were not responsible, but also able to help them get to the main cause of the problem so they could correct it going forward. God is good! >>>Blessed in Tampa

NO MORE SLEEPLESS NIGHTS It had been weeks since my household had an uninterrupted night's sleep due to our young children overcoming different viruses. So two nights ago, I took my concerns to the Lord and stood on Psalm 138:8 (NKJV): "The LORD will perfect that which concerns me; Your mercy, O LORD, endures forever; Do not forsake the works of Your hands." Needless to say, the last two nights have been Heaven sent with eight hours of sweet sleep just like the Word promises. "When you lie down, you will not be afraid; Yes, you will lie down and your sleep will be sweet" (Proverbs 3:24, NKJV). Thank You, Jesus! >>>C.P., Victorious Life Church
COMMUNICATING WITH OUR FATHER GOD As Christians, one of the most powerful and overlooked tools we have is prayer. Time and time again we find ourselves calling out for help. But, at times, we forget to pray and ask Christ for help and direction. This takes me back to a time when I was very frustrated and deep into an assignment Christ called me to do, and I felt like nothing was going the way I had planned. I remember trying to figure out what I was doing wrong and even started pointing fingers and blaming those around me. After putting myself through a rollercoaster of emotions and taking the loved ones around me on this terrible trip, I realized I missed the most important part, prayer. I decided it was time to ask God if what I was doing was even what He had called me to do. To my surprise, He didn’t just answer and confirm my prayer, He did it right away and with a better answer than I could have ever expected. This simple prayer sparked an explosion of things in my life that eventually turned into a ministry that is still going strong today. Prayer is our communication with the Father and the tool He gave us for guidance and direction. “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people” (Ephesians 6:18, NIV). >>>P.S.D., Lutz
CHURCH HOME I had a very bad experience in the last church I attended, and I got very disillusioned. I knew it wasn't God who let me down, but church people had. I wasn't even sure I wanted to be very involved in church after that. During that time, I visited a church where I just did not feel comfortable. I was invited to attend another church, but I was reluctant at first. I thought I would go once just for the sake of the person who invited me. I'm so grateful that I did. As soon as I walked in, I knew! It was the place that God had brought me. I was still hesitant because of all that I had been through at the previous church, but I knew it was God's will for me to be a part of this church. I praise God for my church family. When there is a need, everyone bands together. People show their love and support for one another. I feel God's presence there, and I find encouragement and the chance to grow in my faith. Recently, God has been working in several people's lives, including mine, and it is so exciting to see what He is doing. I am excited that God brought my family to the church because I have gained a caring church family. The preaching is biblical and interesting, and I get so much out of the Bible classes. "But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased" (1 Corinthians 12:18, NKJV). To those who have been hurt before and are nervous about finding a new church home, I would just say, "Don't give up. God has a place for you."

WHOSE BUSINESS IS IT? CHAPTER TWO A SHORT STORY BY TOMMY BURRUS
If you missed the first chapter of this story, you can read it at www.OverflowMag.com in the March 2012 issue on page 8.
I
was nervous. Lea had made an appointment for me to meet with Mark, the business consultant, but I really didn't like the idea of telling a perfect stranger all of my business. I felt humiliated enough without hearing from someone else how big a failure I am. I called Lea and told her I had changed my mind about the business consultant, but she insisted that I meet with him and at least hear what he had to say. After I hung up the phone, I thought, "I guess she is right, and I hope that this guy Mark will be able to give me a little hope for my business, but right now it all just seems hopeless." At that moment, I felt a familiar tug in my spirit and realized that I needed to take this to God in prayer. I sensed God reminding me to be positive, to let go of the negativity that was holding me in bondage. A verse came to my mind. I couldn't think of where it was in the Bible, but the words were something
like: "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment." "Okay, Lord. I get the point. I'll meet this man." Lea was bringing Mark by the shop. There was so much I wanted to do before they arrived. I started dusting and rearranging everything so that it would look just right. I straightened up my desk and took a thorough look around. The shop looked perfect, and I was sure that Mark would be impressed. A digital beep sounded as Lea entered with a man in tow. Lea embraced me, and introduced Mark Malloy of Malloy Business Services. I thanked him for coming and spread my hands and said, "Welcome to Darla's Doodads." Mark thanked me and said, "Lea tells me that your store is struggling. I know that it is not easy to bring in an outsider, and I'll
10 OverflowMag.com April 2012
try to be very sensitive to that. One thing that you need to know, should you decide to engage my services, is that I will be asking some difficult things of you. The process can be uncomfortable at times. I assure you that, even when it is uncomfortable, my goal will always be the success of the business. Lea tells me that you are a Christian. I am also, and when I work with Christians, I like to remind them of what Jesus said in John 15. We have to abide in Him like the branches of the vine because we can only succeed in Him, and it is often necessary to do some pruning before a business can flourish and bear fruit. I wonder, since we are all believers, if we could start with prayer?" Lea and I each nodded and Mark asked Lea to pray. As she lifted my business up to the Lord, I felt such confidence. I could feel that God was also present and would be involved to make this business successful. When Lea had finished praying, she said that she had some things to attend to and would see me later. I hadn't realized that she was going to leave. I stopped her, and begged her to stay, and she agreed.
As we sat down around my desk, Mark said, "Lea tells me that you don't have a business plan. Let me ask you, who is your target?" I looked at Lea and then back at Mark before answering, "Everyone." Mark said, "You have a beautiful store here, and the merchandise is lovely. What is it that you sell?" "We have collectibles, accessories, jewelry, and decor. Oh, and I also have some art," I replied proudly. "Have you contacted any designers or decorators?" Mark asked. I felt foolish. It had never occurred to me. I just shook my head. He began asking about my accounts, and I sheepishly told him that I have a unique bookkeeping system. I was hoping he would let it go at that because I was embarrassed to show him, but he asked to review it. I was forced to reach into the bottom drawer of my desk and present him with the shoebox in which I kept the invoices and receipts. It was as if I were in high school and being asked to open my locker for inspection. Mark said, "I believe that I can help you. You may want to take some time to consider my proposal. The terms are fairly standard. I'll work with you for 60 days, and in that time I'm confident that you will see your business turn around and start making a profit." With that he slid a sheet of paper across the desk and shook my hand and then Lea's. He thanked us for our time and got up and left. Only then did I look at the terms he was proposing. I gasped and began to laugh. When Lea asked why, I explained that there was no way that I could afford Mark. "Besides," I said, "he never even really looked at the displays. He doesn't know anything about my store, and yet, he thinks he can help me. Please. Who does he think he is, anyway?" "Honey, I know this is hard, but Mark does know what he is doing.
Why don't you take some time to pray over this and see how God is leading you? I've been praying for you, and I promise to keep praying," Lea said. "Okay. I'll pray about it. But I don't see how this could work." I told my friend. â– Want more? See the May issue for the next chapter. This story is fictional and just being used as a means to teach. JESUS WON BY KERRY JOHNSON
K
ids have an uncanny ability to bring God's Truth to light. Plus, God is always faithful to answer a prayer that pleases His heart. The two mixed together are a potent spiritual blessing. I had prayed that God would provide an opportunity to talk with our boys about Easter and what it means. No sugar-coating and no happy talk, just the awful, beautiful truth of Jesus’ perfect sacrifice—the physical pain He suffered, the betrayal by those who claimed to love Him, and most importantly, the terrible separation from God that Jesus experienced because of our sin. “Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, ‘Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?’ that is, ‘My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?’” (Matthew 27:45-46, NKJV) Last year on Good Friday, God answered the prayer of my heart. All day I was overwhelmed with the blessing of talking about Jesus with my kids as they asked question after question about Easter and its meaning. We read from the Bible and continued an ongoing dialogue that touched my heart and far surpassed my meager prayer. At some point on Good Friday, my son Cole asked a powerful
question, and his question reminded me why—why the pain, why the betrayal, and why the separation between merciful Creator and Perfect Son. Cole asked, "In the end, what if there are more people who don’t know Jesus than do? Does that mean the devil wins?” I was momentarily speechless. “Who wins the battle then?” Cole pressed, worry evident in his tone. Little boys think in terms of battles and numbers, wins and losses, points and ties. I prayed for wisdom and the Holy Spirit softly reminded me: The battle is already won. It is finished through Him. “So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, ‘It is finished!’ And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit” (John 19:30, NKJV). My soul softened and warmed at the beautiful reminder of victory. Jesus’ victory.
After all, we still fight for souls in this life – for those who don’t know our beloved Savior. We’re called to show and share His love and His Truth with others. But that pivotal battle between heaven and hell, life and death, is won. Jesus won! No tomb could hold Jesus down. The devil's best weapon—death—had no power over Him. Jesus arose from the grip of the grave, soundly defeated death, ascended into Heaven, and sat down at our Father God’s right hand. “Now it came to pass, while He blessed them [His disciples], that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven. And they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem
“The battle is already won. It is finished through Him.” Luke 24:6 says of Jesus in the tomb, “He is not here, but is risen!” I explained to Cole that Easter is a celebration of Jesus' victory. When our Savior took on the sin of the world and separated Himself from His Heavenly Father by dying on the cross and taking our judgment and place in hell, He won the battle for us. It’s a battle for life or death, and Jesus won. “Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it [the cross]” (Colossians 2:15, NKJV). Jesus won! “Jesus won the battle, honey,” I explained. “The devil already lost. When we have faith in Jesus, we become part of the team that won. God's team." I ran my hand over my son’s newly cut hair, thankful that God used Cole to soothe my soul and remind me of this important truth. “And we need to tell people about Jesus, so everyone gets the chance to know Him.”

with great joy, and were continually in the temple praising and blessing God. Amen” (Luke 24:51-53, NKJV). Jesus’ victory at Calvary wiped away the high score of our sin, accomplishing what we can’t do on our own. And our faith in Jesus’ completed, perfect work on the cross assures our salvation, which is freely given by a merciful God in order to put us in right standing with Him for eternity. And that's why. Why the cross, and why we praise our risen Savior on Easter. "…You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him" (Mark 16:6, NKJV). ■

"For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes…." Romans 1:16 (NKJV)
BY AMANDA WRIGHT
“IT’S
the power of Christ that saves,” Julianna Zobrist said when talking about her favorite scripture, Romans 1:16. She is a beautiful mother, a talented musical artist, an unashamed believer of Jesus, and the wife of Ben Zobrist, Tampa Bay Ray’s utility player and homerun hitter. Galatians 2:20 is Ben’s life verse; he recited, “I have been crucified with Christ and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.” Favorite Bible verses say something about a person. It gives us a glimpse of their heart. Ben’s and Julianna’s hearts are full of love – for people, for each other, for their children, for baseball and music, and most importantly, for Jesus. It was a divine appointment this past February, when Overflow had the pleasure of meeting with the Zobrist family in Port Charlotte before the Rays’ spring training commenced. With baby girl Kruse in her arms, Julianna warmly greeted us as Ben got their little man, Zion, out of the car. This young couple, who often finds themselves in the public eye, graciously invited us into their temporary home and candidly shared intimate details of their lives from married life and family to careers and faith. What we noticed the most about the Zobrists was their humble nature and how quickly they brought the glory back to Jesus when talking about themselves. Both Julianna and Ben made it known that they’ve been graced with talent and success through Christ, and not by their own efforts.
MIDWESTERN ROOTS Ben and Julianna were raised in the Midwest and spent much of their childhood in church, as both their fathers are pastors. Julianna grew up with her five siblings in Iowa City, Iowa, where she was homeschooled before attending a Christian school. She always loved music, playing the piano, and leading worship at church. Julianna revealed that her faith was tested in high school, as she felt like she lived a separate life in school than she did at church. She referred to herself as a “people pleaser.” But the true test came while she was attending an event called SEMP (Students Equipped to Minister to Peers) in Chicago. SEMP teaches students how to minister the Gospel and then sends them out on the streets of Chicago to witness to people. “I remember Third Day was leading the worship and just feeling like I have to decide if I really believe this, because I am not going
to just go up to somebody and tell them something that I don’t believe and act like a complete fool for nothing,” Julianna said. She went on to say, “That was the moment that Christ called me to not just a life of mediocrity and not just a life of being lukewarm, but deciding to be bold [for Christ].” She maintained that boldness throughout college, where she studied music at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. Ben grew up three hours away from Julianna in Eureka, Illinois. He played sports in every season, including football, baseball, basketball, and track. Saved as a little boy, Ben said, “I was very conscientious of trying to be obedient to my parents and be the good Christian kid, almost to a fault. My relationship [with God] became about how well I was performing before the Lord.” This mentality transferred over from the sport’s field, and it wasn’t until high school that Ben realized that all his efforts had not changed the fact that God loved him, no matter what. Ben watched his peers make foolish decisions and worried how he would make tough decisions about his future and resist the temptations faced every day by young people. “I hit my knees and gave my life to Christ. I gave all those decisions to Christ, all those things that were weighing on my heart,” he said. From then on, Ben knew he was not only destined for Heaven, but that he could put every aspect of his life in God’s hands and allow Jesus to guide him in every situation without fear. Ben’s relationship with the Lord really grew as he desired to know Him more.
AS FATE WOULD HAVE IT After high school, Ben attended Olivet Nazarene University in Illinois where he played baseball with Dan, the husband of Julianna’s older sister, Liz. At the time, Julianna was only a junior in high school. Liz gave Ben Julianna’s e-mail address and they began a friendship that would eventually blossom into love, but it wasn’t immediate. Julianna laughed and said, “Ben asked if he could start calling [me], but I politely declined that invitation.” Over the next few years, they would “randomly” run into each other – at a Passion Conference in Iowa, in Daytona Beach on Spring Break, and at a baseball tournament for her brother, among other places. Their paths continued to cross when Ben and Julianna’s brother Jeff ended up on the same national baseball team and became roommates. The list goes on – Ben ended up

is and what the Lord was doing in his life,” Julianna said. Ben had been in and out of her life for almost three years, so she prayed that God would reveal to her whether he was supposed to be in her life or not. Two weeks went by and Julianna’s brother and Ben showed up for a surprise birthday visit. It appeared that God had given her the answer she was waiting for. “We started dating the next night,” she said. Then in 2004, Ben was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 6th round where he played in the minor leagues for two seasons. Ben moved to Nashville to be close to Julianna, and they got engaged in February of 2005. They were married by December of that same year.
MAKING IT TO THE BIG LEAGUES
transferring to Dallas Baptist University where Julianna’s brother attended. It became a running joke with her family that Ben kept popping up in her life. In the fall of 2003, Julianna was a sophomore at Belmont and just got out of a relationship. Ben sent her an e-mail out of the blue. “It was so full of honesty and who he
God’s hand was apparent in Ben and Julianna’s union and He was showing up in their budding careers as well. The switch-hitter made his Major League debut in 2006 when he was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays. For the next two years, he went back and forth between the major and minor leagues before being permanently called up in 2008. In 2010, he signed a lucrative contract extension with the Rays. He is considered a super utility player, as he has started at seven different positions all over the field and can successfully bat anywhere in the lineup. Over the last four regular seasons, Ben hit 69 homeruns and racked up 287 RBI's. It is the opinion of many that Ben is one of the most valuable players not only on his team, but also in Major League Baseball. Ben’s success on the professional baseball field begs the question: where does Christ fit into a highly competitive, performance-based career? Ben stays grounded by spending time daily with the Lord and remembering that his identity is not defined by baseball. He explained that it’s easy to take what happens on the field and start judging yourself based on how well you perform. “Having my
16 OverflowMag.com April 2012
identity in Christ releases me from that,” Ben said. “Christ is the One who should be glorified and not me.” He went on to explain that because he walks with Christ daily, his identity is an overflow of who God says he is through Christ. Which brings us back to the second part of his favorite scripture, “…and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me” (Galatians 2:20, NKJV). So where does Christ fit in? Everywhere. “[This is] where God has placed me to share with the people I’m around that are ready to hear the Gospel and to encourage those believers He puts on my path—to just be who Christ wants me to be in my environment,” Ben said. He added, “It’s a challenging atmosphere to serve Him and be a light where He has placed me.” He uses any occasion he can to share Jesus, including during his entrance song. When Ben walks up to the plate you’ll hear one of two artists – Toby Mac or his gifted wife, Julianna. His favorite song is “Only You,” written by Julianna for her new album. The song talks about wanting God more than anything else in your life. Ben explained that when he plays ball, it’s more than just winning a game, or having a great career, or earning money. “It’s for the Lord. It makes my relationship with my wife and kids make sense and [all] the sacrifices [make sense]. It all makes sense because of God,” he said. Ben has no doubt that God has blessed him with this mission field, so he savors the time he has there. Ben helps to organize chapel and Bible studies for his teammates and finds opportunities to minister to them during the long hours they are together throughout the season. “I try not to shove anything down anybody’s throat, but at the same time I want to get to know them. I want to find out what they believe and why they believe that, and I want to share what I believe with them. That’s part of friendship,” Ben said. Outside of the clubhouse, Ben uses his professional career as a platform for Christ by sharing his personal testimony with fans by passing out testimony cards and doing speaking engagements.
SINGING WITH GRACE After earning her degree in Commercial Voice, Julianna worked as a personal assistant to a Christian artist as well as taking other positions in music management. Julianna then released her first album, The Tree, in 2009 with seven songs. This album has a unique sound, incorporating Julianna’s striking voice, beautiful melodies, Biblically-sound lyrics,
and electronic pop rock production. You can’t help but tap your foot and want to sing along with the ear-catching tunes. Her music evokes an infectious energy. Julianna defies the neat little box many want to stuff Christian women into. She has her own style that shows off her bubbly personality, artistic mind, and devotion to Jesus. The title track speaks of God’s sacrifice. The first verse says, “Your wrath unleashed upon the Cross; Judgment poured on the Holy One; The amazing obscenity of your righteous hand; To give Your perfect Son for sinful man.” Julianna candidly shared that she found so much of the Gospel obscene, especially that God’s perfect Son was crucified for the benefit of the world. “I understood it and believed it, but it was like I almost didn’t see myself for who I really was. There was still an ounce of thinking that my goodness has played a part in something,” Julianna said. She realized, “There is no part of me that will ever be able to earn any kind of righteousness. I [was] a dead
man [until] Christ called me out of the grave.” We can only be righteous through Jesus’ perfect work at the cross. The entire album reflects her life experiences and what she has learned on her journey about Jesus and the Christian walk. Julianna said that the largest demographic that responded to this first album was young girls and moms. “It’s cool to see who the Lord has for me to talk to,” she said. With her new album, due out April 10th (during opening week for the Rays), Julianna said, “I feel like for the first time I am writing for somebody, [and I want] to communicate something profound in a more relevant way.” The new album, Say It Now, has six songs, and Julianna used four producers because, as she put it, “I wanted to explore different elements with different songs.” It has Julianna’s familiar electro-pop vibe with insightful lyrics that really speak to the heart. One of her favorite songs on the album is the title track. The chorus says, “Be more than beautiful; You’re not some stupid girl; You’ve got something to say, so say it now.” Julianna said that she wants to encourage women to not try to be perfect in their appearance or in the way they act. “There is a huge burden that we place in the Christian community with expectations that have nothing to do with the Gospel,” Julianna said. This song, and really the whole album, encourages moms and daughters to be bold in their faith. Julianna said we’re here to tell the world about Jesus and what He’s done in our lives. “That is never going to be honest if you are trying to maintain this façade of perfection,” she added. Julianna hopes the album will push women “to stop trying to be this idea that man has created – what you’re supposed to look like and be like and perform like, but to be freed by Christ because He was [and is] perfect…. His works are what bridges the gap between us and Heaven because we’re not able to do that on our own.”
GOD'S GREATEST GIFT Next to Jesus, of course, God’s greatest gift to man is family, whether it’s your spouse, children, immediate family, extended family, the church family, or friends. The Zobrists shared how important this gift of family is to them. In the off-season, they live in Nashville and attend and actively participate at Community Bible Church. They spoke of the importance

of time together in one place to decompress and get away from the world, as a family, because when the season starts, they have everything but a routine, normal life. In an article for Good Living magazine, Julianna wrote, “Our schedule is constantly changing, we know Southwest flight attendants by name, and our son, Zion, often says, ‘We’re home!’ when we pull up to a hotel” (2011 Summer Issue). Ben explained that Julianna embraced the traveling from day one. He said, “The Lord really blessed me with a wife that not only loves me, but she is willing to sacrifice for our family.” The family goes on the road with Ben. Their priority is to stay together. Her performances are usually scheduled around Ben’s games to ensure they don’t miss time together, and they book speaking engagements together as well. They both have the best attitude about their hectic lifestyle. They desire to live the life God has given them to the absolute fullest. The way they playfully joke with each other and finish each other’s sentences reminds you of a newlywed couple. Jesus is the glue to this family and one theme runs deep with this talented couple – the grace of God is acknowledged in their lives above all else. Glory ! ■ To learn more about Ben and Julianna or to book them for an event visit www.TheZobrists.com. NOTHING BUT THE BLOOD "In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace" (Ephesians 1:7, NKJV).
T
he first verse of the old hymn, Nothing but the Blood, written by Robert Lowry goes like this: "What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus. What can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus." The Bible tells us that Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice for every sin ever committed and every sin ever to be committed in the future. Jesus, the Son of Man and the Son of God, was and is the perfect sacrifice because His blood is untainted by any sin. Under the old covenant, people brought animal sacrifices to the priest in order to receive atonement and be forgiven of their sins (Leviticus 4:27-35), but it was only temporary. They had to repeat these sacrifices over and over because human nature is not
the new covenant of grace. With Christ, you will be spotless before Almighty God forever. Will you accept Jesus today? Say this prayer aloud:
perfect, and nothing was ever enough to make atonement for all their sins once and for all. These animal sacrifices were just a shadow of what was to come, pointing to the Perfect Lamb of God that would be sacrificed for us. Jesus, the Son of God, walked this earth as man; He was tempted as man, yet remained pure and innocent. This is why His blood is so superior and great enough to cover the sins of the world. Jesus Christ's blood offers eternal forgiveness, unlike the blood of sacrificial animals before the cross. There is nothing in this world that can be offered to wash away our sins forever or make us whole again, except for the blood of Christ. His blood completely erases our sins from the sight of God. He literally remembers our sins no more (see Hebrews 10:17). When we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, the power of Jesus' blood overtakes us and washes our sins away forever. Allow this truth to take root in your heart and it will break the chains of your past and bring you into

Father God, I come before You in the Name of Jesus. Your Word says that “whoever calls on the Name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21, NKJV) and “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9, NKJV). Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me. It is because of Your love that You don't want me to be condemned and punished for my sins. Thank You for sending Your beloved Son, Jesus, to die for me on the cross. Jesus took my sins, penalties, and all my curses and in return gave me His blessing, righteousness, and favor. He got what I deserved so I can receive what He deserves – all good things! Jesus' blood washes me clean from every sin (past, present, and future). On the third day, Jesus rose from the dead and conquered death. Father, I thank You that when You look at me, You choose to no longer remember my sins and that You see me in all the beauty and righteousness of Jesus. Holy Spirit, fill me to overflowing and lead me through this life – thank You, Father. In Jesus' Name, Amen!
HE IS RISEN T
ake a journey with me back in time about two thousand years ago. There were two disciples walking the seven-mile trip from Jerusalem to Emmaus three days after Jesus had died on the cross. The two were discussing their shattered dreams and expectations of who they thought the Redeemer of Israel was – Jesus. Remember, Jesus was just beaten beyond recognition, making it almost impossible to tell if He was even a man. After His beating, they forced Jesus to carry a heavy wooden cross to the top of Golgotha where He was nailed to that cross and displayed between two thieves to die. This event remained vivid in their memory. From the travelers’ discussion, it would have been obvious to anyone who heard them that they were disappointed, let down, and very sad. Then, Jesus approached them in disguise and asked, “‘You seem to be in a deep discussion about something,’ He said. ‘What are you so concerned about?’ They stopped short, sadness written across their faces” (Luke 24:17, NLT). They shared their faithless concerns with Him. Like little children, Jesus corrected them saying, “You are such foolish people! You find it so hard to believe all that the prophets wrote in the Scriptures” (Luke 24:25, NLT). Then Jesus opened the Scriptures to them revealing Himself in the Word. Sometimes it’s so easy to read the Scriptures and think, “Why did they doubt what God had told them?” But, at one time or
another, we have all had doubtful thoughts. For me, usually in the moments following these unbelieving thoughts, God gently reminds me not to be foolish and slow to believe in His love for me, regarding the issues of life that I face. He reminds me how, as a loving Father, He has always been there to deliver me out of trouble (Psalm 91:15). God uses these personal remembrances of His miraculous work in our lives to remove loneliness and doubtfulness and replace it with peace. Think about the day when Jesus was taken prisoner by order of the high priest and Pharisees. His disciples, who spent all their time with Jesus preaching the Kingdom of Heaven and healing the sick, were now confused and scared for their lives. Two of them followed Jesus at a distance, but the rest retreated from His presence and took shelter, not knowing if they would soon be sought out and killed just for being His disciples. Have you ever felt like these men before? Have you ever felt completely alone in a situation where you were sad, confused, and scared about the possible outcome you were facing? And you ask yourself, "Where is Jesus, my Savior, in all this?" These men had good reason to be afraid; their Savior was no longer with them, or so they thought. After spending the day traveling to Emmaus and sharing the hidden truths of their Redeemer in the Scriptures, Jesus finally opened the travelers’ eyes to Himself in the flesh just before He disappeared. Jesus revealed Himself this way to let them know that He could always be found in

This serves as a reminder to us all that Jesus is no longer on the cross nor in the tomb, but He has risen and is seated at our Father’s right hand for eternity! It is written that He is with us and will never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). Let us choose not to be foolish and slow to believe. Let’s choose to believe Jesus’ Word, knowing that we are forgiven and seated in heavenly places in Christ Jesus far above every principality and evil attack the devil throws at us (Ephesians 2:6). LIVING INTO YOUR CALLING BY ALEX CORRICK
S
o often, as Christians, we know God has something bigger and better for us. Our calling is out there, just waiting to be met—one day! Too often, we think that what we do while we wait for our calling doesn’t matter. But it actually does. In the super-on-sale bin at Books-A-Million a few years back, I found this book called, In the Meantime: The Practice of Proactive Waiting by Rob Brendle. Never heard of him before? Me either. But the back of a book is usually trustworthy and when I read it, it echoed what I was going through at the time. So I bought it. And it sat untouched on my nightstand for several months. When I finally got around to reading it, looking for something uplifting and good, I ended up learning a lot. The gist of it is this: your calling doesn’t just happen one day. “Proactive” waiting means that you use where you are now to enrich yourself and prepare for that calling. Everything in our lives as Christians is interconnected because our God is a sovereign God. He knows all things – including how and when you will fulfill the tasks He has given you (Ephesians 2:10). The main example Brendle uses throughout the book is that of David. As a young boy, he knew that he was going to become king one day. Samuel the prophet had come to his house and anointed him with oil and told
“Wherever you are, in any stage or season of life, don’t just live until you get to your calling. Live into your calling.”
him he was the next king (1 Samuel 6:10-13). And yet for years after, David was still left out in the fields taking care of sheep. Talk about a bummer! But the days he spent out there got him acquainted with God. The days that he spent fighting wild animals taught him courage. When David wrote music and songs to God, he was on his way to becoming the greatest psalmist of all time—though I doubt fame mattered to him. He just wanted to pour his heart out to God. When he became Saul's harpist and his armor bearer, he was a step closer to the throne, but not there yet. Still, every step was training him for his eventual calling of being king. It didn't happen right away, and it didn’t happen on David's terms. God had to lead him through several different stages before it was time to be king. I have several dreams I have wanted to see fulfilled in my life…and still do. At one time, I was praying for my future marriage, and God brought that to pass in His perfect timing. But my calling of being a wife began long before I said, “I do.” It began even before I met my husband. God was constantly teaching me about myself and making me become, through my circumstances, ready for that calling. And there are still callings and dreams in my heart, things He has given me to do. No matter what you feel your calling is or where you are headed, you have to be living it now. When you're at that crummy, minimum-wage job and you know that God has given you a vision to lead a congregation, don't
22 OverflowMag.com April 2012
grumble about that job as though it is hindering you from getting to your “real job.” Wherever God has placed you, He is training you for your future. Learn the lessons now. Living into your calling could be applied to almost any situation or any kind of dream you have that God has placed in your heart: a church ministry or mission field, marriage, parenthood, a teaching job, a publishing contract, a nonprofit organization, or a business venture. The point is that wherever you are now is not useless. Wherever you are, in any stage or season of life, don’t just live until you get to your calling. Live into your calling. Let the Lord transform your heart through these experiences and move you forward, relying on and trusting in Him alone! ■

WHEN I LAY MY ISAAC DOWN Unshakable Faith in Unthinkable Circumstances By Carol Kent
■ Find it at: www.CarolKent.org
Carol Kent, author and popular public speaker, tells her heart-wrenching story in this profoundly hopeful book. Her son, who was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and lieutenant in the Navy with a spotless record, shot and killed his wife's ex-husband. Carol's life was forever changed. She explains how Abraham's life helped her find hope in the middle of an unthinkable circumstance. She shares how she had to relinquish control and fully trust God to get through the devastating process of her son's trial and live in the aftermath of his actions. In Genesis, we know the story of how Abraham "laid his Isaac down" to be sacrificed to God, believing in faith that God would raise Isaac from the dead. Carol takes the reader through her own "Issac" experience, which is a heart sacrifice. Carol explains that an "Issac" or heart sacrifice is something precious to you, whether it be letting go of control over an impossible situation, a shocking event, or a person dear to you. In this book, Carol teaches the reader to embrace God's love and rest in Him for the outcome. She reveals the tender journey that the Lord led her through and His constant presence even in her darkest moments. No matter what kind of heartbreak you've experienced in your life, this book will be sure to comfort you and give you a scriptural basis to work through the pain. There is a light at the end of the dark tunnel and that is Jesus Christ.

"Five guarded and confused foster children. Two loving, but weary, foster parents. One grieving former socialite. Put them all under one dilapidated roof and you get eight unique individuals in a house. Or maybe, just maybe, it becomes the family they’ve all been longing for. The Lost & Found Family is a touching story of hardship, change, and the faith that God can make things better, no matter how difficult the situation appears in our eyes. It’s a great reminder that God brings out the best in us when we show His compassion to those in desperate need of love." Our Opinion: This touching film brings new meaning to the word “family.” Ester, the main character, lost her husband and her lavish lifestyle with him. With only one property left to her name, and nowhere else to go, she was forced to move in with a foster family who resided there. The accommodations were not what she was accustomed to. Not too long after she moved in, the family that she was hoping would move out (so she could sell the place) became close to her heart. With God's love, Ester found a new purpose for her life and realized she was right where the Lord wanted her. I especially recommend this movie to people thinking about becoming a foster parent. What a wonderful film!

HEALTHY LIFE
DEVELOPING CHAMPIONS ...from the inside out
BY SHIHAN STEPHEN J. DEL CASTILLO
T
here are so many important elements that go into the greatest of all God-given assignments, which is to “Train up a child in the way he should go” (Proverbs 22:6, NKJV). As parents, we have the awesome responsibility of instilling character, virtue, integrity, and discipline as well as providing the educational and experiential opportunities that will prepare them to lead healthy and productive adult lives. One of the most important things that we can do as parents, educators, or mentors is to improve our children’s future by the development of their self-esteem. Motivational guru Zig Ziglar says, “You were born to win, but to be a winner, you must plan to win, prepare to win, and expect to win.” In my profession, I train people how to plan to win and be physically and mentally prepared to win. However, it is the ability to expect to win that is the most important and the most elusive quality. I would argue that a person’s expectation is the single most important key to winning. The belief that we can do it (whatever it is) is the first and most important step on the path to actually being able to do it. In fact, as Zig Ziglar also says, “If you don't see yourself as a winner, then you cannot perform as a winner.” It’s why the last three words that my students shout back at me at the end of every class as part of their closing creed are “YES WE CAN!” It is an important reminder and affirmation that they truly can accomplish whatever goals they set their sights on. We live in a society that is overly negative. Most people find it easier to identify what is wrong or what cannot happen instead of what
is right and what can be. Many children have their dreams and ambitions squashed before they ever get to pursue them. Youth need to hear positive voices that affirm them and tell them what they can do, as well as teach them to set high standards and then show them how
“For as he [a man] thinks in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7, NKJV). It is our responsibility to feed our children words of praise, love, and encouragement and to empower them with teachings and experiences of success. I have found that, in the cycle of
“It is our responsibility to feed our children words of praise, love, and encouragement and to empower them with teachings and experiences of success.” to achieve these. This creates a positive cycle of success wherein youth become adolescents who then become adults with the esteem and know-how to make things happen! The truth is that people get what they expect. Human beings most often will refer to their subconscious references from their past experiences to decide whether they can or can’t do something; as Henry Ford said, “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t – you’re right.” That is, we can only do what we believe we can do. This is why it is so important that we empower children with experiences, successes, and affirmations that make them realize what they can do!

success, we must develop the future champion on the inside first. Develop the self-esteem as the first foundation and then build onto that. The self-esteem is the foundation for building a life of success. ■ Shihan Stephen J. HIGHLIGHT
IN THE IMAGE OF GOD BY AMANDA WRIGHT
"G
enesis 1:27 tells us that every man and woman is made in the image of God, and therefore has great value. The fight against abortion is an effort to protect the value of each and every life that bears His image. Every life is important to God, and it is our vision to see every life in Tampa, and beyond, valued and protected," said Andy Layton, the executive director of Life Impact Network. The ministry, which includes A Woman's Place (AWP), is a nonprofit, multi-denominational organization that focuses on preserving the sanctity of life – the life that God created. Andy stated, "There are approximately 8,000 abortions every year in Hillsborough County, and a majority of these are performed in one of the four main abortion clinics in Tampa." AWP found that these abortion clinics were in locations that reach "abortion-minded" and "abortion-vulnerable" women in Tampa. So in 2008, AWP moved their pregnancy resource center directly next door to one of these
abortion clinics. "In 2011, over 600 women chose life for their babies. But there is still much work to do," Andy explained. This month, AWP will open its second pregnancy resource center, but this time it will be situated in South Tampa. "Our hope is that this new location, strategically located 300 feet from one of the South Tampa abortion clinics, will have similar results and further decrease the loss of life in Tampa. Eventually, our hope is to locate A Woman’s Place near every abortion provider in Tampa," Andy shared. The new location’s hours will vary over the summer, but by the end of the year, AWP intends to be open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and some Saturdays. Andy said, “Our goal is to be open at the same times as the abortion clinic.” AWP offers support to women experiencing an unplanned pregnancy and helps guide them through the decision-making process during this critical time. Both AWP locations offer free services, which include counseling, life coaching, pregnancy testing, support groups, and limited ultrasounds, among others. "Our mission is to provide women with factual information about their pregnancy and their options. We strive to empower women to make healthy and informed decisions about the future of their pregnancy" (www.awpm.net). Life Impact Network also has a post-abortion healing
26 OverflowMag.com April 2012
ministry called Surrendering the Secret, as well as adoption services under Woven Basket. So how can we help these women choose life for these precious babies created in the image of God? Andy said, "We believe that God is calling our ministry to the South Tampa area, but it is a step of faith. Our ministry depends on the support of our community to provide these valuable resources that save lives! As we move into this area, we will need additional financial support to sustain these efforts, as well as volunteers to staff this office. Volunteer positions that are needed include client counselors, sonographers, and administrative/receptionist volunteers." You can also join the Walk for Life, one of Life Impact Network's annual fundraising events, on April 21st or 28th. To learn more, visit www.lifeimpactnetwork.org and see their ad on page 3. If you or someone you know is facing an unplanned pregnancy and needs guidance, please call 813-931-1804 and allow AWP to help. You are not alone. ■

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT)
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take. I have loved this Scripture from the very beginning of my walk with God. It reminds me that every time I get stuck, frustrated, or anxious (while I am trying to wrap my mind around anything that may be difficult or challenging in my flesh), I need to stop and remember to trust in the Lord with all of my heart. I need to forget what my head is telling me and just trust Him with everything. When I do, He will direct my path and lead me to where He wants me to be.

SCRIPTURES I STAND ON
1 Peter 4:13 (NKJV)
"But rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy." Anchored in His love for us, He desires to reveal His glory to each of us, even in our trials and sufferings. Knowing this fills me with peace and joy. After losing my 22-year-old son, I realized that God wanted to reveal Himself to me, especially when I was hurting. I would like to encourage others to continue praying for the people He places in our lives. I can continue each day because I have peace that my son is with Jesus. I want to encourage people to keep their focus on Jesus and not on their circumstances. Please visit www.HereOnPurpose.net.
