Dear Friends, Don’t forget that Mother’s Day is on Sunday, May 13th. Let’s show our moms that we care by doing something special for them, whether it is a gift or just spending time with her. On page 22, we have some great gift ideas for mom. As a mother, I know just how exhausting life can be. At times, mothers can feel so drained, physically and mentally. Our minds are especially active, thinking about all the things that we need to do. I often read Psalm 23, and lately, the first part of verse 3 has been standing out to me: “He restores my soul…” (Psalm 23:3, NKJV). I started meditating on this verse and on what it meant for me. A person’s soul is their mind and emotions. So, how does the Lord restore my mind and my emotions? He told me that the answer is in the previous verse. “…He leads me beside the still waters (Psalm 23:2, NKJV). My Father God restores my soul by giving me peace (leading me beside the still waters). I receive this peace through Jesus Christ. As mothers, we continually need to be restored, so we can be the mommies that our children need. You can find a wonderful devotional in our Resources section on page 23; it’s called, “Am I Messing Up My Kids?” by Lysa TerKeurst. I suggest picking this book up and practicing the peace of Jesus each day. From Jesus, we
receive not only peace, but also strength and everything else that we require to be dependable mothers. We must draw from Jesus to be great mothers. Learn more about dependable mothers and drawing from Jesus in Chris Cherp’s article, “Dependable,” on page 20. Do you have someone you can depend on? Do you know Jesus? If not, please go to our salvation section on page 18. Make Jesus your Savior today, and He will never let you down. His love for you is so intense; in fact, it is a perfect love. Even if you already know Jesus as your Savior, I urge you to meditate on John 3:16 and what it truly means for you. A mother’s love, just like God’s, stands the test of time. Janet Tombow was told that her mother didn’t love her anymore. Has anyone ever told you something that shaped your entire life, only to find out it wasn’t true? In “Stolen But Not Lost” on page 8, Janet shares her story of being taken from her mom as a child and about their emotional reunion 45 years later. This is a moving story that you don’t want to miss. On our cover this month is a renowned golf professional, Wally Armstrong. He is a lifetime PGA Tour member and resourceful instructor. In Amanda Wright’s article on page 14, learn about Wally’s exciting journey to success and how he uses golf to share the Gospel. He is also the keynote speaker at the Tampa Bay Leadership Prayer Breakfast on May 15th (see ad on page 3). I encourage you to attend and bring some friends with you. Like us on facebook this month for a chance to win a free family photo session with Kymberly Boswell Photography. It is a beautiful time of year to get photographs taken of you and your family outside. (See ad on page 21.) Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms! Grace and Peace to you all,
Amie Cherp

STOLEN BUT NOT LOST A Mother-Daughter Reunion After 45 Years BY JANET TOMBOW
W
hen the airplane landed, a life-changing event would occur in my life. God had gone to great lengths for me to meet this person, but I still had serious doubts. What if the person waiting didn’t like me or if my missing past was too much to bear? As I exited the airplane, people began to split off to the right and left at the end of the Jetway. A lady was standing very close to the entrance, trying to get her first glimpse of me in more than 45 years. My birth mother was awaiting our reunion. Before I tell you what happened next, let me take you back in time. I had been separated from my mother at five years of age. My father, for reasons that were never explained to me, drove me across the country away from my mother. In this new life, I was raised by an abusive, controlling stepmother and a father who did nothing to rescue me from that abuse. Because I was told all my life that my mother didn’t want me or love me, I grew up wondering, “How could a mother not love her child?” When you are told often that you’re not wanted or loved, you begin to believe it. I was beaten and told to forget the past when the subject of my mother arose. Constant, severe punishment makes you do what the abuser insists. The abusive environment and constant brainwashing led to decades of dysfunctional behavior and workaholic tendencies. I kept trying to prove that I was worthy of love and respect instead of pain and rejection. Fortunately, though, I grew up attending church and Christian camps. As a nine-year-old camper, a speaker came and told us about heaven and hell and about making the right choice of destination before we die. Later, my camp counselor helped me settle that eternal decision. I accepted that Jesus died for my sins, asked Him to forgive those sins, and made Him my personal Savior. I knew for certain, that very day, if I died I would go to heaven. Life wasn’t necessarily easier after that, however. Still controlled by the bondage of an abusive environment in which I was being raised, the fear of rejection, physical abuse, and
8 OverflowMag.com May 2012
frequent criticism continued. Feelings of guilt were pushed on me for not being grateful that someone wanted to raise me when my own mother didn’t want me. Fast forward several years. Anger had built up within me because of underlying issues, resulting in migraine headaches. They originally started due to an accident on an airplane in which a metal luggage rack fell from an overhead bin and landed on top of my head. I stubbornly refused help for almost a year. I was finally prescribed treatment for the painful headaches. I was referred to a Christian therapist who pinpointed that the past abuse in my life was causing the migraines to worsen. I shared my story about how my stepmother had treated me and how I had always been told that I wasn’t wanted or loved by my birth mother. Additionally, my father had left my stepmother, so I was now responsible for her care because she suffered from recurrences of melanoma. I was frustrated by all of it, especially having to now care for my abuser. The therapist asked why I didn’t look up my birth mother. “She didn’t want me, so why would I look for her?” I said sarcastically. “How do you know she didn’t want you?” she questioned. “Because my father told me,” I replied. “How do you know he wasn’t lying?” she wisely asked. My therapist patiently encouraged me to accept that possibility and helped me to work through the anger, feelings of being unloved, and daily stress of my stepmother’s illness. After five years, my stepmother succumbed to melanoma cancer. Shortly afterwards, I began the search for my birth mother. One morning at 3:00 a.m., I awoke with a thought: “Don’t focus on the past, at what you’ve given up, but look to the future at what you’ve been given.” Only God could have said something that profound! I contacted an organization that finds contact information for people based on criteria you provide. The search began for my birth mother with only her name and her possible city of residence, as that was all the information I knew about her. Through an old family friend, I learned that my paternal uncle had lived with my father and birth mother when I was a small child. With each contact, I learned more about my past, but the search was slow. Yet, I had confidence that God wanted me to find my birth mother, and I was committed to obey! I made calls to contacts that I received from the search organization. The first party told me, “She died!” and hung up, leaving me shocked and thinking I was too late! I thought, “What if she was dead, ill, homeless, or a drug addict? Could I handle these scenarios?” I pressed on because God told me to pursue the relationship, so surely it would work out. On business trips, I’d hurry back to my hotel room to make calls across the country. Finally, after a month, I was exasperated and called
my uncle again. He informed me that my birth mother’s sister wanted to speak with me. When I called her, she said my birth mother was alive, but questioned why I wanted to talk with her. I explained that God had told me that I should no longer judge her, and I wanted to ask forgiveness for doing so. My aunt said that she’d see if my mother would be willing to talk with me. A few minutes later, my aunt called me to say that my mother would talk with me, but she insisted that I make the call. Fear made me hesitate. What would I say to her? What if she yelled at me or didn’t want anything to do with me? Finally, I dialed the number. A lady answered. I said, “Hi, this is Jan Tombow, and I think I’m your daughter.” I braced myself for her response. A voice lovingly replied, “Hi Sweetheart, how are you?” Still nervous and defensive, I said, “Well, I think I’m a little older than when you saw me last. Now that I’ve found you, and after making over 250 calls across the country asking for you, I don’t know what to say.” She quickly said, “Why don’t you let me start?” Then, she made a statement that rocked my whole world. “When your father kidnapped you…” “Kidnapped?” I interrupted, shocked. She exclaimed, “Yes, and I could never get you back!” She added that she had been totally heartbroken and thought she would lose her mind. Wow! Did that ever change my perspective! I asked if she ever thought of me over the years. She replied, “Honey, your birthdays and Mother’s Days were extremely painful every single year. But I eventually had to find a way to compartmentalize the pain in order to go on.” I had never given any thought to what kind of tormenting pain that my birth mother experienced because of our separation. Plenty of questions were asked and finally some answers came. Not everything was easy from this point. You don’t just say “Hi, Mom” to someone after 45 years apart. I didn’t even know her. I didn’t know if I could ever love her. I only had God’s urging to no longer judge her and learn the truth. We had to get acquainted and to explore the many years we were apart. We had to allow
love to grow. Although Mom told me that she never stopped loving me, I had to learn to trust enough to love. Fear of rejection constantly hovered around us. However, by God’s grace and healing, rejection never came. Unconditional love flowed between my mother and me, which brought healing to my empty heart and hurting soul. Forgiveness gradually eased the missing years. We had a reunion like no other. At 71 years old, my birth mother became my mother again. She had seen me at five years of age and not again until I walked through that Jetway at the age of fifty! Her hug was immediate. I began to feel her love that would never let go. Eventually, I learned the unconditional love of a mother is the closest thing on earth to God’s love for us. When we met, my mom had hundreds of teddy bears in her condo. The next week, several were being given away to allow more space for my visits. I told her, “You don’t have to do that, Mom. I’m fine with pushing them aside.” Her reply was quick, “No, Honey, you don’t understand. I don’t need them anymore. I have you now!” So, healing was happening for her too! We were apart for 45 years—a blink in God’s eye—but a lifetime for us. I don’t know why I was victimized by a kidnapping, why I was raised in an abusive home, or why it took 45 years to reunite with my mother. Only God knows why. Regardless, He knew where we both were all the time. I might have been stolen, but I was never lost. Hopefully, this reunion story might encourage you to seek God’s gifts of healing, forgiveness, and unconditional love. Allowing God to work in His miraculous ways is essential to becoming the person that He wants you to be. More information about the search for my birth mother, our reunion, and our lives afterward are in my book, “Stolen But Not Lost,” available online or at bookstores upon request. ■

WHOSE BUSINESS IS IT? CHAPTER THREE A SHORT STORY BY TOMMY BURRUS
If you missed the first two chapters of this story, you can find them at www.OverflowMag.com in the March 2012 and April 2012 issues.
MY
cell phone rang with a generic tone. When I looked at the screen, I recognized the number. Mark Malloy was calling me. I hadn't programmed him into my phone yet. I still was not thrilled that I had hired him as my business consultant. I was not interested in hearing more criticism today of all days. I considered letting it go to voice mail, but then I'd just have to call him back. I figured I might as well get it out of the way. "Hello?" "Ms. Hoinz, this is Mark Malloy. I wanted to call you and share some news. I spoke with your leasing agent, and I was able to negotiate a reduced rent for your storefront for the next three months." "Wow! That's wonderful. Thank you," I said. This really was great news. Reduced rent for three months would give me a little breathing room and may just make the difference in staying afloat. Mark continued, "And in reviewing your receipts, I found that
you have actually overpaid one of your vendors by $400, so I've asked them to reimburse the amount of the overpayment." "I can't believe it. That's just fabulous news. Thank you so much," I said. We set a time to meet in a few days and said our goodbyes. I was on top of the world. Maybe hiring Mark as my business consultant was going to work out after all. He had already worked some miracles. I was really glad that I'd taken his call. I was expecting more bad news, but I was pleasantly surprised. In fact, I was feeling so euphoric that I figured even lunch with my mother wouldn't get to me. Oh, my. What was I thinking? Once a month, my mother and I have lunch together. We also talk over the phone two or three times a week. I try my best to avoid going to her house, my childhood home. Somehow, just walking through that door transforms me into a gawky preteen. It's like I'm Alice once she's sipped the potion and shrunk, and I'm being brought before the Queen of Hearts never quite understanding the rules. One shoeless foot on that white carpet is enough to send me shrieking into the streets, so I try to keep her happy with the lunches and phone calls.

Since she picked the restaurant last time, I chose this time. I'm meeting her at the Such a Ham Delicatessen, which, as I've mentioned before, is my favorite place. I hoped that going to my favorite place would help me get through lunch. When I pulled into the parking lot, her car was already there. I found her sitting at a table with half a glass of water. Her wavy, auburn hair was perfectly coiffed as always; her makeup was expertly done. I put on a cheery smile, and hugged her and said, "Hi, Mom." "Hello, Charlotte, dear." I'd given up trying to convince her to call me by my middle name, Darla. My mother had named me after her mother, and she preferred that I be known as Charlotte. She said, "Since you chose to eat at a delicatessen, I suppose we will have to go to the counter and place our orders." I smiled tightly and made my way to the counter. The first shot had been fired, and she'd managed a subtle lob. She was wasting no time today. Instead of my favorite sub, I decided I'd better order a soup and salad. I did not want to supply my mother with any ammunition. I settled on a chicken Caesar salad and broccoli cheese soup. My mother also ordered a chicken Caesar salad and vegetable minestrone. We returned to our table to wait for our lunch. This was the moment I was dreading. My mother began immediately. "Charlotte, sit up straight, dear. How will you ever get married with such poor posture?"
"Sorry, Mom." I sat rigidly. I was searching for some way to redirect the conversation, but my brain wasn't cooperating. "Speaking of which, are you seeing anyone?" My mother asked. Her face was tilted slightly forward, her eyebrows were arched, and her eyes were locked onto me. "No, ma'am. I'm too busy with work, and I'm really not ready to date right now." "You aren't getting any younger, Charlotte. Time is running out." "Mom!" "I know you don't want to hear this, but I'm only saying it for your own good. You ought to quit playing at that shop and find yourself a man. You never did have a head for numbers anyway. Don't you want children?" At that moment, the server set our lunch down in front of us. I would have been relieved, but I knew that the brief intermission was not going to derail my mother. In fairness, I know that she loves me. She is trying to help in her own way. In my private moments, I could also hear the incessant ticking of my biological clock, but I had things I wanted to do for myself before I got tied down with a husband and children. I considered telling my mother that, but thankfully, I restrained myself. "Actually," I said, "my business is doing very well. I've even hired a consultant." I watched as my mother took a tiny forkful of salad and chewed it precisely. As I did, I knew that this was not a good sign. My mother is never at a loss for words. When she takes the time to weigh her words, it is a good indication that they will be particularly sharp. I braced myself even as she daintily swallowed and took a sip of water. "That's wonderful, dear. I am delighted that everything is going so well for you," she said. I did a double-take and mentally reviewed what she had said. If there was a barb there, I must have missed it. She smiled sweetly and reached her hand across the table and set it atop my own hand. We weren't sticking to our usual script here, and I was confused. It was a tender moment, and my eyes welled up. "Charlotte, dear, are you all right," my mother asked. "Yes, ma'am. I just...I love you, Mom," I said. "I love you, too, dear," my mom said as her own eyes welled up. She gave my hand a squeeze. I'm not quite sure what happened or how it happened, but I think something changed in our relationship that day. ■ Look for the next chapter in June's issue of Overflow. TRAIN-ING FOR GOD BY KERRY JOHNSON
“W
hy does the Bible say we have to number our days?” Cole questioned as he looked straight through me with his guileless blue eyes. Why now? I shot a nervous glance at the kitchen clock: 7:40 a.m. Though I love when our boys ask Biblical questions, time was short. It was a hectic Monday morning and my hubby was heading out the door with Cole. I hugged them both goodbye and told my thoughtful first-grader, “Since we’re only on earth a short time, God wants us to spend those days wisely for Him. We need to be…” An unexpected thought crossed my groggy mind. “We need to be responsible, reliable, and really useful with our time.” A distant ‘choo-choo’ echoed through my imagination like a long-lost friend. Thomas the Train? As Trevor and Cole piled into the car, memories flooded back. From 16 months up until his third birthday, Cole lived and breathed trains. He carried them around, lined them up, and raced and crashed them. We watched Thomas the Train DVDs until I ‘choo-chooed’ in my sleep. “Thomas and the Magic Railroad” was one of the first movies Cole watched as a toddler. I remember hearing “Mr. Conductor,” played by Alec
Baldwin, repeating the three R’s of Railroading, “Engines must be responsible, reliable, and really useful.” I realized it tied neatly into what our six-year-old was asking. Psalm 90:12 (NKJV) says, “So teach us to number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom.” How can we number our days for God? By being responsible with how we live, reliable with how we love, and really useful for our Savior – all for God’s glory. Being responsible with how we live means being accountable to our Savior for our actions and decisions. We’re each created for God’s good works – to fulfill a purpose for His glory. Paul’s words in Acts 20:24 (NKJV) create a framework for living responsibly for Him: “But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.” We each have a life race to run for Christ, and we’re purposed by the abilities He gave us. The variance of spiritual gifts and callings is a marvelous rainbow of God-infused human talent. A few will be pastors and theologians. Many will scrub floors and change diapers while quietly raising a new generation of believers. A few will write stories magnifying God’s love, and still others will serve Christ with their lives while protecting widows and children in war-torn countries like Sudan. Ultimately, each of us is responsible for fulfilling our specific calling in Christ. When someone is reliable, they’re known to be trusty, authentic, and consistent. I pray, as our sons grow and mature, that they’ll be reliable with how they love others. I pray they’ll choose to love people in their lives, not because it feels good (and it will – at times), but because they were loved first—and unconditionally—by their Savior. After all, Jesus’ love is the most reliable (trusty, authentic, consistent) love we’ll experience on earth. And when Jesus commanded us to “love one another as I have loved you” (John 15:12, NKJV), our Savior didn’t mean we’re
12 OverflowMag.com May 2012
to love when we feel like it or when it’s convenient. After all, feelings are consistent only in their inconsistency. When we seek our Savior’s heart and our love is shaped by His love and His Truth (God’s Word), we’ll be reliable in how we love. I’ve learned the most effective way to be really useful for God is by living according to His Word. The Bible is all we need to traverse life’s up-and-down and
“When God’s love covers everything we do and our love for others, we’ll be really useful for Him – all for His glory.” often rough roads. The Apostle Paul’s words to the Colossian church details how our lives can be really useful for God. “Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection” (Colossians 3:12-14, NKJV). Verse 14 is a wonderful physical representation that we’re to “put on love,” or wear it over ourselves. When God’s love covers everything we do (living responsibly) and our love for others (loving reliably), we’ll be really useful for Him – all for His glory. ■

IF
you're a golfer, you may recognize Wally Armstrong as one of the most innovative leaders in golf instruction. Through his long history in golf, Wally has been a caddie, a player, a student of the game, a coach, an author, a speaker, and even an inventor. But so much more than all of that, Wally is a disciple of Jesus Christ who uses golf as his platform to share the Gospel. His life is in the grip of God's hands, and Wally has purposed to spend his days building friendships through his favorite pastime. Wally explained, "Jesus was our greatest example, our model for the way that we should live and react to life. Jesus shows that friendship is the tool for His life." To Wally, the golf course is more than a beautiful place to play, but a mission field to bring Christ to the world in his sphere of influence.
LEARNING THE COURSE Wally grew up in the cornfields of Indiana, just down the road from a nine-hole golf course. As a child, he excelled in sports, including baseball, wrestling, and golf. In his freshman year of high school, Wally joined the varsity golf team. His summers consisted of junior tournaments and caddying. Then in 1963, after winning the high school state championship, Wally moved to Gainesville to attend the University of Florida (UF) on a golf scholarship. He planned to go on to get his master's degree and become a college golf coach, as he had no aspirations to play professionally. However, the Lord had plans of His own for Wally. It was during his senior year at UF that something important happened. “I met Christ through the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and also Campus Crusade,” Wally recounted. As Wally entered the graduate program at UF, he focused more on his studies and on sharing Christ with other students through Campus Crusade. Wally's graduate fellowship was under Conrad Rehling, who emphasized the use of drills, or golfing exercises, and analogies in his teaching. "I was very inquisitive about how people learn [to play] golf and what was the most effective way to teach golf. I thought it was through mental imagery and associations with other sports," Wally said. He researched and experimented with various other tools to teach golf. The skills Wally acquired during this season of his life would prove to be invaluable to his later career.
A BOGEY TURNS INTO A BIRDIE He was then introduced to PGA Tour player Dave Regan who asked Wally to share his testimony with some collegiate golfers. After the meeting, Dave suggested that Wally use the game for Christ. The notion of tying God and golf together had never occurred to him. "Dave said [to me], ‘You should come out on the PGA Tour and caddy for me and you can meet some of the other pros that know Christ,’" Wally recalled. He was blown away that there were actually pro golfers who shared his faith in Jesus, so he agreed and met Dave at a tournament in North Carolina. "I went to a Bible study with Dave and one of the greatest players of all time was there – Gary Player," Wally explained. Dave asked Gary if Wally could caddy for him. Gary politely declined because he had a faithful caddie and had never seen Wally caddy before. God did not disappoint though. Wally and Dave were paired with Gary three times during that tournament out of a blind draw, and Gary was able to see Wally caddy. The next tournament was in Dallas. It turned out that Gary's caddie couldn't attend, and he asked Dave if Wally could caddy for him. Wally couldn't believe it. He had the opportunity to not only carry the bag for Gary, a golf legend, but also receive encouragement from him to play on the PGA Tour. Gary advised Wally that he would have a greater impact on golfers for Christ if he was competing at the peak of the golf world. He caddied for Gary for three tournaments before he got fired. Wally had accidently left bananas in Gary's bag that ended up spoiling and ruining his rain gear and gloves when he needed them most! Although his caddie career ended, it was just the beginning of his professional career. When Wally returned home there was a big pro bag with clubs, balls, and gloves from Gary. "I thought it was a pretty good sign. He gave me a mulligan – a second chance," Wally said. It was a sign from God that Wally would play golf professionally.
SERVING GOD ON THE GREEN Wally realized he wanted to serve the Lord through golf, but first he had another obligation to fulfill. He graduated with his master's degree in 1968 and had a ROTC commission. He joined the army and was stationed in El Paso, Texas. He met his wife Debbie while visiting the Campus Crusade at the
15
May 2012 Love+Faith+Hope
University of Texas, El Paso. They got married in 1970, and for two years, he ran the Army golf course. Wally continued to hone his golf game over the next few years, and it wasn't until 1973 that he qualified to play on the PGA Tour. One of Wally’s most notable finishes in his career was at the Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta, Georgia when he finished fifth just three strokes behind Gary Player, who won the tournament. Wally set a rookie record of eight under par for the event. "God really did give me a game just to keep me out there for over 300 tournaments with numerous top ten finishes," Wally said. During his time on the PGA Tour, Wally became one of the leaders in the Bible study that he was introduced to years prior. He had been building relationships with a number of the younger golfers when he played on the minor tours. Over time, the Bible study’s attendees grew to almost 30 golfers and Wally saw some major professional players come to Christ. "That was really my greatest thrill – being able to give more than myself to golf, but to really see that as a mission field. The Lord calls us to use our platform wherever we are," Wally said. He stayed on the tour until 1985, when it became too hard to play and raise a young family. Before he retired from the Tour, Wally and his wife settled in Maitland, Florida. They have a
daughter, Dana, and two sons, Scott and Blake. Today, they have seven grandchildren.
LESSONS FOR THE FAIRWAY Wanting to spend more time with his children, Wally led a "Dads and Lads" golf day at his church. "My son, Scott, and I put on a demo for everybody, and I pulled out a lot of my crazy props I had from my college days," Wally explained. They set up a baseball tee and put a golf ball on it instead. Then, Wally had the children hit the golf balls with bats. Next, he placed the golf balls on the ground and told the young partakers to "swing up high like in baseball with the club; then put it behind the ball and make a baseball swing through the golf ball." Wally said, "Right away, I found an incredible way to teach kids golf." What was so unique about Wally's style of teaching was the use of other sporting equipment and household objects to help the kids learn the proper mechanics for golfing. Wally and Scott started doing clinics and soon made one of the first golf instructional videos for children called "Golf for Kids of All Ages." Wally shared that he went on to make a total of 22 instructional videos that focused on different areas, including videos for beginners, women, men, children, coaches, and others. Some of his crazy props include coat hangers, footballs, sponges, balloons, and brooms, among others. What Wally learned back at UF and while on the Tour was that people could learn to play or improve their game by using mental imagery to help them associate something they were familiar with to the golf exercise. It literally allows the golfer to feel their way to proper mechanics or as Wally puts it, "Feel your way to better golf." The drills, in conjunction with the unlikely tools, help the golfer practice the right movements. For example, Wally uses a mop for one drill. He explained, "The secret to a smooth takeaway is swinging the hands, arms, and club back together in one piece. This keeps the club head

low to the target line for the first foot or so of the swing. Mopping the floor exaggerates the low takeaway action, allowing you to get accustomed to the correct feeling" (Golf Magazine, May 1993).
RENOWNED GOLF INSTRUCTOR In 1992, Wally was approached by a large infomercial company to film "Maximizing Your Game" with Kenny Rogers and Pat Summerall, an infomercial that aired for more than two years. The company "manufactured training aids and made them out of some of the everyday props that I was using. One of the props that I use is a plastic hanger, so they created [one] for me that would actually fit on the top of a golf grip.” Wally explained, “I can teach chipping, putting, pitching, and full swing with that one tool. We ended up with five different training aids that they put in a kit with seven hours of instruction." After being on TV nonstop, Wally found himself in the limelight as a teacher. He received invitations across the country to perform clinics with his fun props. Wally got involved with several nonprofits, appearing at charity golf tournaments all over the world. He puts on his clinic before the tournament, plays a par three challenge shot and then speaks. "That's when I get to share my faith. I am able to use that platform now as more of a teacher," Wally shared. Over the years, Wally has instructed all age groups, but he enjoys teaching kids the most. When his second son, Blake, was 10 years old, they did an instructional video called "Power Drives for Kids." The video was included with Titleist’s T-Rex golf clubs for kids. "That was another one of these things that went viral all over the country. God always seems to open the door to things to do," Wally said. In 1999, Terry Anton and Wally developed a mobile golf game for kids called SNAG®. It stands for "Starting New At Golf" and uses tennis balls and plastic clubs. Wally explained that it's used internationally as a school golf program. "The game has its own

The following day, Wally is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at the Tampa Bay Leadership Prayer Breakfast at the Tampa Convention Center (see ad on page 3 for more details). The ultimate takeaway from Wally's life and career is to allow God to order your steps. When you seek Jesus first in all you do, whether you're a golfer or not, God will keep you in His grip. Glory! ■ simplified rules and terminology that adds fun to the learning and playing experience" (www.snaggolf.com). Wally said that the idea was to create a game that can be taken to kids everywhere, as "evangelism is not bringing people to Christ, its bringing Christ to people. We wanted to evangelize through golf."
THE MULLIGAN Throughout Wally's career, God has given him many opportunities to share the Gospel, and he often does by using parallels between golf and the Lord. As he has built relationships with people all over the world through the game, Wally explained that people are more receptive to your message after a friendship develops. When the door is open to share Jesus, he enjoys relating the Gospel to things they know, like golf. It's easier for most people to understand an analogy more than a scripture that is being spouted to them. "The greatest analogy is the mulligan. A mulligan in golf is a second chance – it's the grace of golf," Wally said. Another player has to offer you a mulligan, a chance to start over on that hole. God offered mankind a mulligan through His Son, Jesus Christ – a second chance to all people, which is the grace of God. "He sent His Son, Jesus, to play the perfect round for us – to live a life that we couldn't live in order to be accepted by a perfect God," Wally explained. He went on to say that no one has ever played a perfect game and birdied every hole, just like no one, besides Jesus, has ever lived a perfect life without sin. "He offers us His scorecard
in place of our imperfect one," Wally said. Jesus took all the sins or scorecards of the world and nailed them to the Cross, so that we could be free. Wally added, "We get to play under new rules. We're not keeping score anymore; we're forgiven." Wally, in conjunction with some other authors, used these analogies in several books and devotionals. He wrote his latest book with Ken Blanchard, which was published in 2010. It's called "The Mulligan," and it follows the life of a corporate man, Paul, who is in desperate need of a mulligan. Paul thinks he knows everything about success because he founded a multimillion dollar company, but he needs help with his golf game. He starts getting lessons from an "old pro" and they develop a relationship. The old pro teaches Paul more than just a better golf swing. He talks with Paul about a relationship with Jesus. "The book is really a parable of how to connect with Christ," Wally said. (Find this book at themulligan.org.)

THE ULTIMATE TAKEAWAY Wally's lifelong dream has been to connect golfers to Christ around the globe. For the last 30 years, he has traveled with other golf professionals and businessmen worldwide supporting people in their use of golf to bring Christ to others. Wally has been to Japan, Korea, China, Australia, South America, Europe, Russia, and most recently, Africa, where he spent three weeks. He conducted clinics at a number of country clubs in Nairobi, supporting Athletes in Action and the vision of Campus Crusade for Christ. Wally estimates that there are 75 million golfers in the world that can be inspired to find Jesus through the game. In June, he will be launching a website (www. mulligangolfclub.com) to highlight how God is working through golf around the world. He hopes golfers all over will become a member of the club and share their personal stories of finding the Lord to encourage others seeking Jesus. The website will include video

MAGNIFY HIM SUBMITTED SALVATION BY YOU!
A PERFECT LOVE NO
man that has ever walked this earth was perfect, except Jesus Christ. As human beings, we all have flaws, we all have sinned, and we all fall short of the glory of God on our own. The beauty of God’s love that John speaks of in John 3:16 is that it is a perfect love—an intense love—for mankind. When He sent His Son Jesus to die for us, He was telling us, in effect, that He knows we cannot be perfect, nor can we love Him perfectly. Romans 5:8-9 (NIV) says, "But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justified by His blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through Him." Through Christ Jesus, we are saved from our past, from our sins, and from punishment. It is upon the Cross, with Christ's arms stretched wide, that we have been made righteous in God's eyes. Jesus has taken our place and has been punished for us. Stop punishing yourself and allow this truth to resonate in your heart. Be open and willing to accept God's perfect love for you. Meditate on the intensity of that love—a love that He has for each and every one of us in the world. He loved you before you were born, He loved you even while you were making mistakes, and He will always love you no matter what you do.
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." John 3:16 (NKJV) The price has already been paid. Accept this precious gift of love, and allow Jesus to take over your heart and become your Lord and Savior. Let Jesus' blood wash away the pain of your past and clothe you in His righteousness. Say this prayer today: Father God, I come before You in the Name of Jesus. Your Word says that “whoever calls on the Name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21, NKJV) and “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9, NKJV). Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me. It is because of Your love that You don't want me to be condemned and punished for my sins. Thank You for sending Your beloved Son, Jesus, to die for me on the cross. Jesus took my

sins, penalties, and all my curses and in return gave me His blessing, righteousness, and favor. He got what I deserved so I can receive what He deserves – all good things! Jesus' blood washes me clean from every sin (past, present, and future). On the third day, Jesus rose from the dead and conquered death. Father, I thank You that when You look at me, You choose to no longer remember my sins and that You see me in all the beauty and righteousness of Jesus. Holy Spirit, fill me to overflowing and lead me through this life – thank You, Father. In Jesus' Name, Amen! ■
DEPENDABLE more knowledgeable, my mother remained dependable. Sometimes I have flashbacks of my late teens when I was a piece of work—to put it nicely—and I now question how my mother refrained from losing all hope. Did she wonder if all her and my father’s efforts to raise me were in vain? What gave her the insight to do or say the right things at the right time or to have the strength to be there for everyone else especially in her own darkest hour? I believe the strength and intuition that dependable mothers pull from, regardless of how spiritual they are, is from that of Jesus and the twice refined makeup He has given them (Genesis 2:22). Like that of a dependable mother, Jesus wants to be our dependable everything. As a loving and dependable God, Jesus wants His beloved to take from His superabundant supply. Look at the story of the Samaritan woman who met Jesus one afternoon at the well (John 4:4-42). Jesus was weary from a long journey and rested at the well while His disciples went into town to gather food and supplies. The Samaritan woman went to draw water at the hottest part of the day to avoid the other women. She was self-centered and embarrassed about having five previous husbands and, now, living with a man out of wedlock. By the time she was finished drawing from Jesus, she had forgotten about her past and began looking towards a bright future, knowing that she could now depend on Jesus to always be there for her. Like the Samaritan woman, we should run to Jesus for courage, strength, provision, healing, joy, peace, comfort, righteousness, protection, and much more. But how many times do we believe the lie of the enemy and think that our insignificant needs are not important to such a big God? So instead of taking (or drawing) from Him, we turn to ourselves, and our efforts inevitably fail.
One word that describes most mothers in this world is 'dependable.' From the moment a baby is conceived, a mother begins to feed and nurture the baby growing inside of her through the food and drink she consumes. For approximately nine months, the baby is completely dependent upon one person for everything necessary to sustain life. Then it’s up to the mother, in most cases, to push as hard as she can and endure severe pain in order to give her child the experience of life outside the womb. It doesn’t stop there! For the next few years, mothers predominantly change the baby’s diapers, bathe them, feed them, hold them when they need comfort, and even caress them until they peacefully fall asleep. This is just a brief description of a dependable mother. As the child grows, other family members can enter their lives and help support them in all kinds of ways. But, from the child’s perspective, there is something very special about their mother's touch and voice that can never be replaced by anything or anyone. Looking back on my wonderful childhood, I realize that the security I felt knowing my mother loved me unconditionally helped to mold me into the man I am today. It's amazing how a kiss could actually make a boo-boo instantly feel better or how her acknowledgment would make me feel like I was king of the world. As I grew and became

By drawing from Him, the Samaritan woman actually feed Jesus and allowed Him to do His Father’s work (John 4:34). She became Jesus-occupied and one of the first female evangelists to preach Jesus to her whole town. In turn, the townsfolk sought Jesus to draw from Him personally, making Him their dependable Savior. Dependable mothers are not self-occupied (or self-centered) people. Dependable mothers are Jesus-occupied people who see past themselves and depend on the strength and supply of Jesus to get them through the day. Dependable mothers are seemingly able to put everyone else first and themselves last. How do they do it? It's because they have Jesus and they draw from Him. Mother’s Day shouldn't be the only day that we are grateful for all our dependable mothers. Let's make it a habit to reflect back on all they have sacrificed and given to us, their children. This year, let’s give back to our mothers by allowing them some much needed personal time to sit with Jesus and draw from Him. By doing this, we will all benefit. Thank you, Mom, for being so dependable; I love you. Glory! ■

Painted Terra-Cotta Pots Flowers are always a Mother's Day favorite, but this year try putting a twist on that traditional gift. Purchase a few terra-cotta pots, a variety of water-based acrylic paints, metallic pens, clear craft varnish, potting soil, and some annuals (try pansies) or garden herbs (try rosemary or basil). Dads, make sure the paints are safe for skin contact. With adult supervision, allow the kids to decorate the pots by painting them, writing words, or putting their handprints on them. They can also use bows and stickers and paint polka dots or stripes. Once the pots are completely dry, dad can seal them with the varnish. Then after the varnish has dried, add the potting soil, flowers, and/or herbs. This makes a beautiful keepsake that mom can use year round.
Relaxation for Mom The best gift of all is spending time with your mom this Mother's Day. Take her out for the day. Catch a movie, have lunch, and get a pampering pedicure. Or give mom the gift of time – that is, time to herself! Moms with little ones may just want to relax for the day. In that case, dads pack the kids up for the day out or set mom up with some afternoon shopping or time at the spa. The bottom line is that mom just wants to know you care and you appreciate all of her hard work throughout the year. Choose a special way to show her just how much she means to you!
Grab the Good China A tea party is the perfect gift for girly moms and their daughters. This idea will take a bit more time and effort, but will touch mom's heart. Dad, take your daughters on a treasure hunt at local thrift shops. Buy mix and match flowered tea cups, saucers, tea pots, sugar and cream holders, tiny spoons, and a lacy table cloth. Be sure to wash these thrifty treasures well before use! Set the table at home for afternoon tea on Mother's Day (around 2pm). Serve a variety of teas with little sandwiches and pastries. You can visit a local bakery for these treats or find recipes online. To make it extra fun, gather up mom's scarves, hats, and jewelry for dress-up time before the tea is served. Mom will just love this spot of tea and her tea party keepsakes.

This book takes the mother through all kinds of trials and stress faced by mothers every day and how we can turn to God. One of the most valuable things to take away from this inspiring devotional is living in dependence upon Jesus to fulfill all your roles as a wife and mother each day. Lysa says, "I can't just will myself to be in a good mood and act godly; I have to rely on God's strength, power, control, and provision." Lysa teaches the reader to allow the Lord to be their portion as described in Lamentations 3:22-24 and Psalm 73:26. Our Opinion: “Dolphin Tale” is based on a heartwarming story about a brave dolphin and the strangers who came together to save her. Winter, the dolphin, was rescued near Cape Canaveral and resides at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA). The movie was filmed on location, including at CMA. Winter actually played herself which made the movie that much more exciting. It is a great film for the whole family that teaches viewers to never give up hope in the face of impossible circumstances. HEALTHY LIFE
PLEASANT WORDS BY CHRIS CHERP
“Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers” (Ephesians 4:29, NKJV).
IN
what manner do you like to be corrected? Do you like when you are yelled at, which makes you feel stupid and inferior? Is that the best way to motivate someone to do a better job? Does this type of motivation create team players that would go above and beyond the call of duty? I think we all know the answers to these questions. Sometimes we say things in ways we don't really mean, but they still have a negative, long-lasting impact on the recipient. I have been involved with athletics most of my life. When I was growing up, I was blessed to have several good coaches who had a major impact on my work ethic and integrity. To this day, these coaches are men for whom I would do just about anything. They were able to identify my weaknesses and then embrace the challenge of working alongside me to turn them into strengths. They would correct through words of encouragement. In the end, the weaknesses became strengths and lifelong relationships were formed. On the contrary, I had my share of notso-good coaches that thought the best way to improve an athlete was by shouting offensive and belittling words at him in the presence of all his teammates. These men were not able to identify my weaknesses. They just knew that I wasn't doing it right, so they thought if they yelled louder, I would understand how to do it better. No one enjoys being coached by these types of people. Sadly, this kind of coach does not enjoy long-term relationships with their former students, and they often don't even realize why. Parenting is similar to coaching. As parents, we have the responsibility of raising our children to be the best they can be in the game of life. However, parents have a choice of
which coaching technique to use. Are we going to be good coaches or not-so-good coaches? The results of our methods can be quickly seen. These two methods are miles apart from one another and have a long-term impact on our relationships with our children.
(when you want to scream at the top of your lungs) is to hug your child while saying, “I love you.” I know this may sound odd, but it can diffuse most tense situations. The Bible reminds us, "Everyone enjoys a fitting reply; it is wonderful to say the right thing at the right
"Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones." Proverbs 16:24 (NIV) Proverbs 18:21 (NKJV) says, "Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit." The words that we speak over our children are like invisible hands molding a piece of clay. If they are gentle, loving words, they will create something beautiful with function. In contrast, if they are hard, mean words, they will just rearrange the lump of clay leaving it with very little function. At times, children can push buttons that parents didn't even know they had, but it is so important to choose our words wisely when speaking to our children. Oftentimes, the best thing to do in a frustrating situation

time!" (Proverbs 15:23, NLT) It's wonderful for both sides, and no apologies are needed for misspoken words. So when you are tempted to use harsh and hurtful words with your child, choose to speak pleasant words of encouragement instead. "Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones" (Proverbs 16:24, NIV). You'll find that by doing this, you will be able to transform weaknesses into strengths in your children. They, in turn, will handle situations in their lives just like mommy and daddy taught them through their example. The best part is you will have a longlasting relationship with your child. Glory! ■

FOLLOWING GOD'S PLANS A Roadmap to Success BY ANNE CHILDERS
T
im Dozier starts most days before the sun comes up. As the owner and president of two thriving businesses, there are never enough daylight hours. Tim knows he cannot go it alone, so before his feet hit the floor each morning, he turns to God. Daily prayer, praise, and Bible reading are typical activities for Tim Dozier. He was raised in a Christian home, and his father was a pastor. “Dad was a working preacher. Our churches could not support a full-time minister,” he said. Tim grew up watching his parents and his grandmother work hard all week and serve in the church all weekend. This strong work ethic and great love for the Lord are the legacy passed down through Tim to his own four children. As a young man, Tim joined corporate America and spent twenty years excelling and earning a very good living. He worked hard, just as his parents had taught him, and he retained his Christian values. However, his heart never followed his mind and body into the workplace. There were too many troubling behaviors
in the corporate world. He felt led to choose another path, and this time, he was led with his heart and his faith. Tim opened Integrity Resources, Inc. in Zephyrhills a decade ago. His years in corporate America proved to be excellent training for his new business venture. Integrity Resources provides hotshot delivery of any item, from small packages to pallets of goods. Integrity Resources is also a distributor of Lark sheds in eastern Pasco County. Tim approached his business with a servant’s attitude and soon saw another opportunity. He opened Integrity Resources Staffing, Inc., which provides staffing services for clerical and bookkeeping positions and CDL drivers—all areas Tim knows well. For Tim, the lifelong relationship with his staff and clients is a rewarding aspect of business ownership. Being able to operate Integrity with faith-based principles is a daily blessing. His staff is either family or those he regards as family. Integrity Resources Staffing provides a valuable service for both the employer and individuals seeking job placement. One call is all that is needed for employers with staffing needs. Integrity guarantees satisfaction and strives to increase productivity while lowering expenses. Those seeking employment will also be well served. Integrity’s short-term assignments are designed to provide a valuable foundation for a successful career path. can be entered online. With Integrity Resources, pay cards replace traditional checks, saving check cashing and banking fees. Staffers receive a text message on payday, announcing a pay card deposit. Now, ten years later, Tim’s only regret is that he didn’t move to business ownership sooner. He endeavors to be Christ-focused in all areas of his life. He coaches and guides his children to also be godly business owners. He prays that they will see his example and live their lives for the glory of the Lord. Tim’s dual businesses have survived the economic downturn and are growing and thriving. Tim believes he has been blessed with favor because he strives to be obedient to God and to be a good steward of his resources. He happily gives back to the community, sharing his time, his talents, and his treasures. Tim’s advice to other entrepreneurs and business owners is to fully surrender to the Lord and “don’t bear the burdens alone.” He recommends letting others be a part of your inner circle. Strive to be obedient, tithe, and practice good stewardship. Tim Dozier has followed his own advice and credits God’s favor and integrity for his success in business and in life. ■
