Dear Friends, Can you believe August is already here? It is back to school for all the students. Summer vacations are over, and school shopping has begun. Kati Kiefer from TrueCouponing.com gives us some great tips on how to save when shopping for school supplies. Check it out on page 22. My son is starting the VPK program this year at Victorious Life Academy (VLA). My baby boy is growing up so fast, but I feel at ease with him attending VLA. They will not only prepare him for kindergarten, but also teach him about Jesus and His Word. I take great comfort in knowing that he is being nurtured both spiritually and academically. In the midst of preparing our children for school, buying school supplies and clothes, attending open houses, or perhaps moving them off to college, let’s put their spiritual needs as our top priority. Our spotlight this month features Asif and Leaha Shaikh of Athletes in Action (the sports ministry of CRU). I recently watched a sermon where the pastor taught on having a “Throne attitude.” In other words, we should address our issues from a mindset of sitting with Christ. Jesus is sitting at the right hand of our Father God. He sits because He has finished all the work at the cross. As the Body of Christ, we are sitting (or resting) with Him (Ephesians 2:6). While we rest in Jesus, our Father God puts our enemies and issues under our feet (Ephesians 1:22-23). Are you tired of struggling to provide for your family or to make your business successful? In Chris Cherp’s article on page 10, find out how you can rest in Jesus and be successful in all areas of your life. I urge you to stop striving to do everything in your own power. Lean on Jesus. GOD'S PROMISES OVER THE RAINBOW BY KERRY JOHNSON

hands gripped the steering wheel like iron bands as the dark storm clouds emptied all of their moisture over my car. The torrential downpour on hot pavement created a misty vapor that enveloped the roadway, making visibility poor and head lights a necessity. Driving in pouring rain causes my nerves to jangle like strummed guitar strings – tight, then shaky and tight again – especially among drivers reaching, or exceeding, 80 miles per hour. We had spent a few hours visiting my in-laws in Sarasota that summer day, and as I loaded up the car and hurried Cole and Chase into their seats, I glanced at the Doppler on my phone. What I saw was a quintessential Florida summer afternoon. A tie-dyed mass of red, orange, and green blobs covered the I-75 corridor on Florida’s west coast. Just as we started off, a crash of thunder loud enough to vibrate the car made my stomach jump. One hundred percent chance of rain for the Johnson car. We only live 45 minutes north of my in-laws’ house in Sarasota, but as I set out on the road, time moved as though in slow motion and south Tampa felt hundreds of miles away. In the backseat, Cole and Chase giggled as a funny scene from one of their favorite movies came on, and I drank in their carefree laughter like thirsty ground. Amidst the angry rain clouds and slashing sheets of rain, I remembered the beautiful rainbow we had seen a couple of days prior – a reminder of God’s Word and His unshakable promises. Bold and bright, it had been a complete, perfect arc in the healing blue sky, breaking faithfully through the storm clouds. Each and every color of the rainbow was visible that afternoon, from fiery red to violet purple, and it had been a poignant reminder of God’s faithful promise. And God said: “This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:

I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.” (Genesis 9:12-13, NKJV) In Genesis 9, after the floodwaters dissipated and the ark rested on dry land, God established a covenant with Noah and his family, promising that He would never again flood the earth. As the windshield wipers raced back and forth, chasing away falling rain, I thought of the gorgeous rainbow that appears after the sun breaks apart the clouds, chasing away our fear. After all, God’s covenant with Noah comforts us to this day. During the worst storms in life, God is always there, and the rainbow echoes His faithfulness to His creation. Even more amazing than the rainbow, our loving Heavenly Father offered His perfect Son, Jesus, and His Word promises that through faith in Jesus, we’re forgiven of our sin and belong to Him for eternity. Brakes flashed on and off like stoplights, but God brought Isaiah 26:3 (NKJV) to mind: “You will keep him in perfect

peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You.” As Cole and Chase chattered in the backseat, my hands loosened their death grip on the steering wheel. The rain continued, but I remembered that God’s promises are fully ours through faith in Jesus Christ and His completed work on the cross. We can trust our loving Creator and claim the promises in God’s Word. Cole and Chase trust me; they feel safe in my care, even with my hands tightly clenched. I realized that I need to have that same soul-deep trust in my Savior and in God’s good care. Life will bring dark and frightening storms, but God’s promises never fail. His rainbow is just beyond the storm, and He promises, “I will not leave you nor forsake you” (Joshua 1:5d, NKJV). As August hits full swing and school supplies stock the shelves at local stores, the carefree summer days will fade quickly into a new school year. There will be new routines, new teachers, and new schedules. Life also guarantees new challenges and difficult trials as dark and foreboding, at times, as summer’s exploding thunderstorms. But God’s promises remain, over the rainbow and throughout His Word. Whatever storms life brings, keep the Bible tightly gripped in your hands, and trust God’s perfect promises. ■

ave you ever done everything that you know to do only to feel like you are moving backwards? Do you feel like very little is being accomplished by all your persistent effort? This type of situation can be experienced when trying to lose weight, when trying to break a habit, or especially when trying to run a business in these tough economic times. Not too long ago, I wanted to go into my closet, curl up in a little ball, and cry. I had been working hard and doing everything humanly possible to try and grow the advertising partnership for Overflow Magazine only to hit a wall at every turn. Almost four years ago, God very clearly told me to bring glory to Him through His Son Jesus Christ in a local magazine, but I didn’t understand why I had been experiencing so many road blocks. During this difficult time, I finally said to the Lord, “I am done trying to make this work! If you want this to succeed, then I am going to need your help.” Within seconds, a soft voice inside of me said, “Finally…you are asking Me for help.” That’s when things in my business life began to turn around. In Matthew 11:29 (MSG) the Bible reads, “Walk with me and work with me – watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you.” For a short time, I felt like the burden that I was carrying for God was anything but light. That’s when I finally realized I had not kept my eyes on Jesus. It was a rock bottom moment in my embattled soul that finally got me to see the light. I knew what He wanted me to do, but I was trying to do it in my own power through my own efforts, not His. I quickly changed that and asked Jesus to help me with every area of my business. I handed it over to Him and then asked Him how I could be of assistance. That’s when the Lord brought me to Genesis 6:8 (NKJV): “But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.” The interesting thing about this verse is that the name Noah in Hebrew means “rest.” So Genesis 6:8 can be read,

“For all who enter into God’s rest will find rest from their labors, just as God rested after creating the world.” (Hebrews 4:10, NLT) “But rest found grace [unmerited favor] in the eyes of the LORD.” At first, after reading this verse, I thought, “Rest? I need to rest? I have barely accomplished anything, and You want me to rest, Lord?” But then He gently reminded me that I asked Him for help and that is exactly what He was doing—helping. “For all who enter into God’s rest will find rest from their labors, just as God rested after creating the world” (Hebrews 4:10, NLT). When I rested, He began His work by orchestrating “business calls” to the hearts of others. Before I knew it, I was a product of His grace. I began receiving emails and phone calls from

people who wanted to promote their businesses and help support Overflow through advertising. I was led to share this experience with you so you, too, can stop trying to do everything in your own power with little to no success. Our Father God is patiently waiting for all His children to come running to Him for help and guidance. It is when we begin to see Jesus as our fitness coach, our counselor, and even our business advisor that He will gladly fulfill these roles in our lives. Take my advice and ask Him for help, not just in business or in fitness, but in every area of your life. When you do, your life will become a lot easier and much more enjoyable. Remember, all you have to do is ask. Glory!

he Bible tells us that there are times when we will hear the Holy Spirit say, “this is the way, walk ye in it” (Isaiah 30:21, KJV). When God told us to move to Wesley Chapel, Florida, from Orange County, California, it was one of those times when we could hear His voice clearly! Moving here to Wesley Chapel was always attractive to me because this is where my parents live, but I never truly thought our family would leave our friends and family in California to move to the opposite coast. However, in April of 2011, God showed us through a series

of “God-stances” that He wanted us to move to Florida, and we ended up going sooner than we thought. My husband’s family business sold unexpectedly, he was offered a position in Tampa, and our house got foreclosed on all in rapid succession. Those three events along with a lot of other smaller confirmations propelled us to Florida in a matter of months. It was incredibly hard to leave our church of ten years, my husband’s family, and our longtime friends. However, throughout the whole difficult process, my husband and

I both had a clear sensing that there was a significant reason for this move. Although we had no idea what it could be, we felt that it was something bigger than just living near my parents. That sensing brought amazing peace throughout the difficult transition. We moved ourselves across the country in June of 2011. About two weeks after our arrival, I “randomly” took my three daughters to the spray park in Zephyrhills (WaterPlay at Zephyr Park). I sat down on a bench next to two other women, and we soon struck up a conversation. Little did I know that this was a “Divine appointment.” As we talked, we quickly discovered that they had both moved to Wesley Chapel the same week we had – one family from Illinois and the other from California, just like me! They explained that their families had moved here because God had

called them to start a church in Wesley Chapel. The hair stood up on the back of my neck when they told me that they had been praying for God to bring other couples across their path to help them plant the church. I wasn’t surprised when the Holy Spirit whispered to me, “That’s why you guys are here.” Joy filled my heart as I calmly told them that one of their prayers had been answered. I now knew that we were here in Florida to help them start the church in whatever way we could. Tears came to our eyes as we laughed over the fact that this was no coincidence. Our meeting that day had been arranged by the Holy Spirit! I called my husband on the way home and said, “Babe, I know why we are in Wesley Chapel!” We quickly jumped into this group and found ourselves part of a small but dynamic church. The group shared the common vision of serving Jesus and the people that He placed in our sphere of influence. The process of building a church from the ground up has been an interesting and exciting experience for us. It has been about a year since that meeting at the park, and the journey has been wonderful yet difficult at times. We met for a time at a local school, but the Lord led us to switch our focus to building small groups throughout the week. Additionally, God called us to specifically serve single moms in the community. As the informal outreach coordinator, I had the privilege of visiting some local crisis pregnancy centers. I discovered that we have a lot of amazing people in this community! We jumped into serving and found that hearts can be reached with simple methods, whether it’s by helping a single mom on moving day or by being a good listener to someone who feels alone. There are many wonderful opportunities in this community to come alongside women who need to see Jesus’ love in practical ways. We are empowered to serve others through Jesus’ love for us! Many changes have been taking place, and we are not sure of what tomorrow holds. Yet, in spite of all these changes, my husband and I remain confident that God is in control and that He who began a good work will be faithful to complete it (Philippians 1:6). It’s not always easy to trust God, but the knowledge that He moved us to Wesley Chapel to be part of what He is already doing here is amazing and comforting. We sometimes miss California, but we are confident that God has great things in store for us. We are so thankful that God had a plan for our family all along. He can be trusted to lead and guide His children! ■

August, parents and students of all ages are busily preparing for the start of a new school year. Some parents are sending children to school for the first time and others are helping their kids to transition into middle school, high school, or college. Some adults may be going back to school to pursue a different career path or gain more expertise in their profession. With the anticipation of the changes ahead, the carefree feel of summer is rapidly coming to a close. The reality of structure, assignments, and extracurricular activities could become a burden and add stress to an already busy time in life. Jesus said in Matthew 11:28 (NIV), "Come to Me, all you who are weary

and burdened, and I will give you rest." Before the crazy schedules start and the busyness of life begins to weigh you down, meditate on this Scripture. Jesus tells us that we can find rest in Him. Think about it like this: If you have an upcoming exam and you studied everything on the teacher’s review sheet, you would feel prepared and ready to take that test. You could rest assured that you have the answers. In a world full of everyday stresses, we need to be prepared for anything that comes our way. Life has its ups and downs, but if we have Jesus and rest in His finished work at the Cross, we will be prepared. If you don’t know Jesus, the number one way you can prepare for the upcoming school year is to accept Him as your Lord and Savior. Will you make that important step today? We all need His rest.

S A LVAT I O N P R AY E R Father God, I come before You in the Name of Jesus. Your Word says that “whoever calls on the Name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21, NKJV) and “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9, NKJV). Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me. It is because of Your love that You don't want me to be condemned and punished for my sins. Thank You for sending Your beloved Son, Jesus, to die for me on the cross. Jesus took my sins, penalties, and all my curses and in return gave me His blessing, righteousness, and favor. He got what I deserved so I can receive what He deserves – all good things! Jesus' blood washes me clean from every sin (past, present, and future). On the third day, Jesus rose from the dead and conquered death. Father, I thank You that when You look at me, You choose to no longer remember my sins and that You see me in all the beauty and righteousness of Jesus. Holy Spirit, fill me to overflowing and lead me through this life – thank You, Father. In Jesus' Name, Amen!

any of us know the story in Matthew 25:14-30, The Parable of the Talents. A man went on a journey and gave five talents to one of his servants, two to another, and one to another. The servants with two and five talents both traded with them and doubled what they had, but the servant with one talent hid it in the ground. When the man returned, he surveyed what his servants had done with the talents. To the servants who doubled their talents he said, “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things…” (Matthew 25:21 & 23, NIV). The parable illustrates that when we are faithful in the responsibilities Jesus has given us and wisely use our gifts and talents, it will result in greater opportunities. Asif and Leaha Shaikh demonstrate exactly what Jesus was trying to convey to us in these verses. They are a couple who faithfully serve Jesus Christ and have continually followed the Lord’s leadings in their ministry endeavors. God responds to their faithfulness by showering them with His grace. Prayers are answered. Needs are met. Doors are opened. Lives are changed.

BY HIS GRACE God chose Asif and Leaha to minister to athletes at the University of South Florida (USF) and at the London Olympics. Some might say Asif isn't qualified without an extensive athletic background. He confessed that he only played soccer as a child and tennis as a teenager. Leaha was an athlete in high school, but didn't

play at the collegiate level. So how can they relate to people whose lives revolve around training for sports? They have something in common with every athlete – Jesus. Everyone needs Jesus, and God sends people of all backgrounds to share His Gospel. It is by the grace of Jesus Christ that Asif and Leaha can reach athletes. God chose them; they don’t have to be qualified by the world’s standards. "When I tell people I'm [going to be an Olympic Chaplain], they say how did that happen? I've come up with an answer: because I have been faithful to God. There's nothing I could have done through my own ability to make this happen," Asif said. Throughout their time ministering, it hasn’t always been easy for them, but as we learned in The Parable of the Talents, God will reward His faithful servants and promote them for His glory. Their journey into ministry began more than 13 years ago, but for Asif, specifically, it began as a teenager. He said, “I knew God had a plan for me to be a minister.” Born in Pakistan, Asif was raised Muslim. His family moved to the D.C. area when he was seven years old, and he had a hard time adjusting to life in America. When his older sister accepted Christ, things started to change. She planted seeds in Asif’s heart and a few months later he gave his life to Christ. Asif hid his faith from his father for fear of disapproval. It wasn’t until Asif’s senior year in high school that he revealed the truth. “I told him that I wanted to be a minister and go to Bible college,” Asif explained. His father didn’t stand in his way when Asif attended school in Missouri.

Asif seemed to be on track with God’s plan as he studied to be a minister. He later moved back to D.C. and eventually earned the rest of his Theology degree through correspondence while working part-time. However, he was tempted down a wayward path of chasing money and materialism. Asif said, “I was driven by money.” Asif further explained that he continued pursuing the things of this world, while still regularly attending church. He was split between the love of money and the love that God had for him. He knew that God wanted him to be a minister, but Asif didn’t have the strength to change what was driving him. It would take the grace of God to put him back on track.

A CALLING TO COLLEGE MINISTRY It wasn’t until a representative of Chi Alpha Campus Ministries spoke at his church that Asif felt God pulling him to his destiny. He decided to attend a meeting at American University to learn more. God spoke to his heart just as he arrived at the meeting. “I got out of my car and walked [toward the campus], and it was like Jesus was standing on the curb with His arms open wide saying, ‘Welcome home, son!’ The moment I put my foot on the curb I started crying,” Asif said. “I knew there was a divine calling on my life,” he recalled – a calling to college ministry. Asif found himself back on God’s course, and a month later, he was invited to help at a college student retreat where he met Leaha. Four months later, Asif proposed to Leaha on the Capitol steps in D.C. after they prayed over the city and their future. They both knew they had a calling on their lives for ministry. Leaha shared, “My personal relationship with Christ began when I was a sophomore at Penn State. Joining the staff of a college ministry felt so natural because that's the season of my life when I came to faith in Christ. God was preparing me for the plans He had.” Leaha and Asif got married in 2000. Later that year, Leaha completed her student teaching and graduated with a Bachelor’s in Secondary English Education. The following year Asif said, “We really felt God was leading us to Florida. I was ready for a change.” In the summer of 2001, the Shaikhs moved to Clearwater. Leaha began teaching middle school and Asif worked in accounting. Additionally, they both began volunteering with Campus Crusade for Christ (CRU). Less than a year later, Asif felt it was time to move into full-time ministry and went on staff with CRU. He asked Leaha to pray for the next year about making the transition alongside him. Leaha said, "I did just that, so when the time came for me to take that step of faith, my heart was ready." In 2004, Leaha left teaching behind to join Asif on staff. During the next four years, the couple worked with CRU at Eckerd College,

St. Petersburg College, University of Tampa, and USF St. Pete doing Bible studies, having weekly meetings, and taking students on summer projects. “When I led a Bible study at Eckerd College, I had the opportunity to minister to softball players. I think God used that experience to prepare me for my ministry to athletes at USF,” Leaha said. During this time period, Asif and Leaha’s two daughters were born, Makenna and Janessa.

ATHLETES IN ACTION Asif said, “I gave everything to what God had called me to do because I believed in my heart that I needed to be faithful in the small things that God had given me.” He told the Lord early on in his ministry, “I’ll go where you want me Lord.” Part of him wanted to serve at a school with a big athletic program, but Asif waited on the Lord.

Then in the fall of 2006, the Shaikhs felt led to join the CRU staff at the USF Main Campus. This was a leap of faith for Asif and Leaha because they had established their lives in the Seminole area, but God’s tugging was undeniable. The next spring they moved to the Tampa area. Asif and Leaha began working on USF’s Main Campus with CRU, but Asif knew after the first meeting it was time for a change. Asif explained that of the 30 ministries on campus at the time, none of them were geared specifically toward athletes. The USF football team was gaining momentum, and Asif began making connections with some of the players on campus. During this time, Asif became close friends with Tampa Bay Buccaneers Chaplain Doug Gilcrease, who is a part of Athletes in Action (AIA). AIA is the sports ministry of CRU, which has the vision statement, “A Christ follower on every team, in every sport and in every nation” (athletesinaction.org). Asif was encouraged to pursue a sports ministry at USF and decided to speak with the national director of AIA about it. “He said, ‘We would welcome you with open arms.’” Asif and Leaha finished out the school year with CRU before planning to start AIA at USF.

THE BIBLE STUDY Doug called Asif in April of 2008 and explained that Will Allen, a safety for the Bucs at the time, had a heart for college football players. He suggested that they all meet at Asif's home for dinner and asked him to invite some of the USF

football players that he knew. Afterward, Asif remembered, "Will said to me, ‘If you want to do a Bible study in the fall with all the football players at your home, I'll come every week and lead it with you.’" Asif and Leaha were blown away by the opportunity set before them. That summer is when "the recession really hit and we started losing our support big time," Asif said. Many people may not know that "CRU and AIA have no central funds, so we trust God to provide our complete salary through the support of churches and individuals. We are missionaries," Leaha explained. "There have been hard times but those times have deepened my dependence on the Lord. That's the greatest blessing, in addition to being able to share my faith as a career," Leaha said. It was a storm the couple had to weather, but God blessed them with resources to overcome the circumstances. Three weeks later Asif and Leaha held the first Thursday night Bible study in their home with 20 football players. Will helped lead the Bible study alongside Bucs receiver, Brian Clark. “Will now plays for the Steelers and Brian now works at USF, [but] they both have returned as guest speakers for our ministry,” Leaha explained. Another huge blessing came with this weekly commitment. A company called Nu Vista Foods had been donating food to their ministry efforts for years. When they learned of this new venture, Asif explained, the owner called him and said, "You can't give those guys hot dogs and hamburgers. I want you to know you can have NY Strip Steaks and Filet Mignons every Thursday." Asif said, "For four years, [Nu Vista Foods] has given us so much food, including to our family." Each week during the football season the Shaikhs open their hearts, their home, and their kitchen to the players. They understand the value of building relationships with these guys and earning their trust. The players eat, play games, and hear the Word of God. Asif and Leaha look back on the last four years of the Bible study with gratitude for the lives they've had the opportunity to touch. Asif said that all the struggles they have been through and all the positions they have served in while waiting for God's next assignment were all worth it to see the lives of these athletes change.

teams wanted to be involved in AIA as well. Leaha explained, "I shifted my focus to female athletes in general as opposed to just working with one specific team." Asif spends a great deal of time connecting with the athletes in various sports, including the tennis and track & field teams. "I integrate myself into the culture," Asif explained. He shows up to practices and cheers them on at games and at meets in full USF attire. Asif builds relationships with the coaches before he develops a bond with their players. Asif spends time on campus and Leaha explained, "[I] have transitioned my ministry [efforts] to one of hospitality, hosting students for meetings or get-togethers at our home. It has been my experience that [student athletes] prefer to come to our house." Asif and Leaha get involved and make themselves available as much as possible, which fosters the trusting relationships that are needed to minister to student athletes. AIA staff across the nation were surprised to see the impact that the Shaikhs had on the USF campus in such a short time. Asif shared, "They said that what we did in eight months, it took them years to do on their campuses." In 2009 they began having bi-monthly AIA meetings on the USF campus and by 2010 the meetings were weekly.

Every summer Asif goes with various teams around the world for sporting events. In the summer

of 2010, he accompanied a collegiate women’s soccer team from USA and Canada to South Africa. The trip took place during the World Cup (for soccer). It just so happened that the USA team’s Chaplain needed help with the rest of the chapel services during the second round of the World Cup, and he asked Asif if he would like to do it with him. Asif accepted and realized how much God was moving in his life. It was humbling to see His plans unfold for him. Asif felt like God wanted him to do more ministering on that level. Last summer Asif was part of Bible studies and chapel services at the National Championships for Track & Field. “When I left that event, I felt like God opened the door for me to go to the Track & Field World Championship in South Korea,” Asif said. In August 2011, he did go and serve as one of the Chaplains. He also went to the Pan American Games in Mexico a couple of months later. Then Asif received one of the most exciting opportunities of his career – he was asked to be a Chaplain at the 2012 Olympics (by a committee that staffs Chaplains at world events). They also asked Leaha to join Asif in London for the first week to reach out to the women athletes. Asif will spend three weeks in London. For the first several days, he will be connecting with the athletes and handing out information on chapel services, which will be held every day of the Olympic Games. God had lined up events for the past two summers for Asif to attend, enabling him to make connections before he ever set foot in London. Asif plans to share God's Truth with the Olympians and “touch their hearts in a different way that really changes them.” The opportunity to minister to Olympic athletes will open up many more doors for Asif and Leaha to continue to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with athletes across the globe. They have been faithful every step of their ministry journey, following God through every open door. Asif said, “You’ve got to be faithful in the small things before the Lord will entrust you with big things in life. I think that’s the key to ministry.” Leaha and Asif’s story is a testimony to God’s grace. It’s not by works that they have come this far; it is by faith in the Lord and His plan. Glory!

BACK TO SCHOOL BY LEAHA SHAIKH

got up this morning, fed my children breakfast, drank some coffee, and got dressed for the day. But when I looked closely in the mirror, I realized this day was not like any other day of summer. In fact, it dawned on me that the time had come to stop stuffing things into our suitcases for family vacations and start stocking up on school supplies. Part of me wanted to breathe a sigh of relief, knowing we have survived a summer full of swimming lessons, vacation Bible schools, and family road trips. Although, another part of me wanted to breathe a sigh of sadness, thinking about how a new school year would bring my children one step closer to adulthood. Like most mothers, I had to remind myself not to hold too tightly onto yesterday as well as to stop trying to capture tomorrow. So I started thinking of ways that I could help them succeed today by making the transition back to school an easy one. I began making a plan. I can attend our school’s open house in which students have the opportunity to meet their new teachers and tour their new classrooms. I can also encourage a smooth transition by giving their homeroom teachers my availability for volunteering as quickly as possible, whether at the open house or shortly after school starts. When my children know I will be helping out somewhere on the school’s campus, they feel especially eager to learn in the classroom. Another way I can help my children succeed today is by “lathering” them up in prayer before sending them off to school. I usually start by first thanking the Lord, then praying for their protection as well as for their choice of friendships and other potential influences. But most importantly, I pray for them to carry within their hearts a desire to know the Lord. I hope they will chase after God this fall the way they chased after fireflies in the summer—with complete curiosity and powerful persistence. And in the midst of that chase, I pray that they will grasp how much Christ loves them and desires to have a relationship with them, in turn deepening their desire to have a relationship with Christ. Somewhere in the middle of my planning, I realized I simply needed to surrender my heart into the palm of

In Matthew 6:33 (NKJV), I read, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things (everything that you need) shall be added to you.” After reading this Scripture, I did not feel quite as sad at the thought of my children growing up, but rather I felt challenged to trust God in the process. So when my mind starts wandering back to the list of school supplies or onto a more complex calendar of activities, I will remind myself to trust God with the details first. Before any of us find ourselves nurturing the academic and extracurricular needs of our children, let’s first think about nurturing their spiritual needs. And as we start preparing to send them back to school, let’s carve out time for daily devotionals by simply keeping a Bible within arms reach

of the dining room table, the dresser in their bedroom, or in the car. So when they head back to school, we will be living out Deuteronomy 6:5-7 (NIV), which says, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” Now tomorrow morning I plan to wake up, feed my children breakfast, read the Bible with them, drink some coffee, get dressed, and go shopping for school supplies. You Shine Brighter

orship Leader John Redgrave is releasing his debut EP, You Shine Brighter, on iTunes August 7th. A native Floridian, John, his wife Erika, and three other couples moved from South Carolina to the Brandon area last year to plant Motion Church. John explained that the church desires to "reach a culture of unbelievers and people who may have encountered a soured view of the church growing up." In the midst of this busy season in his life, John began writing songs which drew from his experiences and emotions of when he was a new Christian. He said, "I felt led to go in this direction because that is the season most of the people at Motion Church are in." God laid it on John's heart for the church to "write and create its own voice for our community." Of the four songs on the EP, John said, "Each song is very different, but still has one similar idea throughout. Calling on the power of Christ allows us to shine His love on those who may be walking in darkness." The pop/rock sound of these worship songs were co-created with Conrad Johnson (formerly of "Chris and Conrad") and Casey Darnell (worship leader for North Point Community Church). "I really believe in these songs and hope others have fun with them and are able to worship our Creator with them in their daily lives," John said. John really wanted to create a worship experience with a "big sound." I think listeners will agree—he achieved that with flying colors. These songs are certainly relevant for Sunday morning, the radio, or any worship setting. John said of the overall message of his music, "I hope my songs speak to those who may be walking in a dark season in life and to those who just need their own anthems to cry out to God. Ultimately, the only goal here is to make the Name of Jesus known and bring His light to those in darkness."

ravis Mohr grew up on a dairy farm in the Wisconsin countryside. He enjoyed a fresh, wholesome upbringing in a Christian home and had strong ties to the local Lutheran Church.
