SEPTEMBER 2012, Issue 31

Dear Friends, I want to share something with you, which is especially for those who worry. Years ago, I worried so much that it became an issue. I would worry about everything, and it caused stress and anxiety in my life and physical symptoms in my body. As human beings, we have a tendency to worry about tomorrow: How am I going to pay that bill? Am I going to complete that project at work on time? Are my test results going to come back okay from the doctor? How am I going to send my kids to college? We seem to think that if we worry, it will somehow help, but it actually doesn’t (Matthew 6:27). Jesus delivered me from my worries, and He showed me that our Father God doesn’t want us to live a life filled with worry and stress. He will give us what we need today and fresh help for tomorrow. We just need to rest in Jesus. I have experienced this firsthand. Each day, all of my needs are taken care of and I have joy and freedom knowing my Lord is handling everything on my behalf. Let’s not look out into the distance with fear, but look to Jesus instead and allow Him to deliver us. When we look to Him, we are reminded of who we are and whom we belong to. This will give us reassurance that, as God’s children, He will supply all of our needs (Matthew 6:33; Philippians 4:19). Have you ever struggled with your identity or battled with low self-esteem? Nikki Inda shares her emotional journey of how she was robbed of her identity and how she found it through Jesus Christ. This story reminds us to stop allowing the accusations of the enemy and others to dictate how we see ourselves. We are the children of God, created in His image. We are in Christ Jesus, and

our identity and happiness is in Him. When we wake up to this truth, it will set us free. Unfortunately, many Christians don’t really know who they are in Christ. When we realize who we are, we can begin fulfilling the ministry God has called us to—the ministry of sharing His Good News with those around us. Learn much more about this in Chris Cherp’s article, “Wake Up!” on page 12. This month we touch on an industry that most want to ignore, an industry that exploits women. There are numerous women on the streets of Tampa Bay that are overlooked because many assume they all have chosen their lifestyles and don’t want help. For most of these women, this is not the case. In our spotlight, “She Was Created for More,” find out how the ministry Created is restoring vulnerable women in our community (page 16). The amazing women of Created are bringing God’s Word onto the streets, into the clubs, and into the jails to minister to these hurting women. I urge you to support what God is doing through Created—a ministry that is showing God’s love to the women living in the shadows. We are having a pancake breakfast on October 6th at Organic Life Coffeehouse & Bakery to help raise funds for this awesome ministry (see ad on page 21 for details). Please join us and help Created continue to restore and bring the vulnerable women in our community into a relationship with Jesus Christ. As children of God, we are called to help others. In the “Gimpy Grackle” on page 8, Kerry Johnson uses a story of an injured bird to illustrate that God uses His creation to help those in need. We live in a broken world, and God sends His children to show others His love. Allow the Holy Spirit to direct you on what to do and who to help. There are millions of victims around the world trapped in the criminal industry of Human Trafficking. On page 20, three ministries share about what they are doing to end this horrific modern-day slavery. I encourage you to learn more about these ministries and support their efforts. This September learn who you are in Christ Jesus, which will empower you to share the Good News with others. With Love in Jesus,

Amie Cherp

CONTRIBUTOR

GIMPY GRACKLE BY KERRY JOHNSON

MY

sons, Cole and Chase, were playing outside at the Florida Aquarium on a muggy summer afternoon, and I found a shady spot where I could stick my feet into the cool water, too. We had spent a couple of hours inside the aquarium and finished our visit with the pirate ship and water fun as we typically do. I was swishing my toes in the bubbling sprinkler when I saw a crippled bird. He was a lonely, dark brown clump of feathers wandering among splashing children and smiling parents. My eyes followed the bird as he hopped awkwardly along the edge of the blue foam surface in the kids' water area, his good clawedfoot taking the brunt of each hobbled-hop. In the same instant that I recognized the bird as a Grackle, I realized there was more wrong with him than just his damaged claw. The Grackle bent down and scooped up a few sips of chlorinated water, nearly falling over in the process. He attempted to fly across the play area but could only manage a haphazard glide a few feet away. I wondered if this bird had been hit by a car or perhaps fallen out of his nest as a baby. He pecked at small, broken pieces of the blue foam, eventually dropping them from his open beak. As I watched him hobble around alone, searching for food, something inside me shriveled up like his damaged claw. Why are there animals with gimpy feet? Why are there people who can’t walk? Why must there be damaged things in Your beautiful creation? Why, Lord? God created me with a very sensitive heart. I live deeply – too deeply sometimes – taking in everything that I experience. Often, I find myself shouldering a backpack filled with emotions, thoughts, and concerns that others seem to brush off and quickly leave behind. I don't unpack emotional experiences that easily. Good or bad, they linger in my soul and can leave scars if I don't turn them over to my Savior. I’m so grateful to know the One whose yoke is easy and whose burden is light and who provides rest for my weary soul (Matthew 11:29-30). As I watched the crippled Grackle hobble around, I wondered about brokenness. The world is rife with examples of brokenness both within the human

population and throughout the animal kingdom. God's Word tells us ‘why’: we live in an imperfect, sin-coated, broken world right now, a world that's currently in the "bondage of corruption" (Romans 8:21, NKJV). Even though my mind understands this, my heart has a more difficult time accepting pain and suffering. That hot afternoon I couldn’t help but lift a desperate prayer heavenward – the creation crying out to its Creator. Why, Lord? Why brokenness? My gaze fell back on Gimpy (as I came to call him) while he hobbled alone, feathers askew and crippled foot curled up, and God’s Word filled my mind. “Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” (Matthew 6:26, NKJV) Watch Me. God’s answer flew in gracefully, landing a couple of feet from the hobbling Grackle. The two brown birds were nearly the same size, and I saw something sticking out of the

8   OverflowMag.com   September 2012

new arrival’s long, dark brown beak. A meal. In a matter of seconds, the desperate situation of the gimpy Grackle improved dramatically as its feathered friend shoved something yummy into its beak. Gimpy eagerly accepted the meal and hobble-skipped closer to his bird friend. A parent bird? A sibling or mate? I didn't know, but as I watched them huddle together among the water madness that afternoon, I soaked in the beautiful answer from my faithful God. In a broken and damaged world, followers of Jesus Christ are called to meet needs and fill ‘hungry beaks.’ Like the situation with the Grackles, God uses His children to help those in need. When we are abiding in Christ’s love for us, God’s grace will overflow from our lives into the lives of others. Let’s ask the Lord to show us someone in need—and watch how He presents opportunities to share His love, mercy, and grace with those around us. “But whoever has this world's goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth” (1 John 3:17-18, NKJV). ■

Identity Theft, FOUND SUBMITTED BY NIKKI ROSS INDA

I

was born in 1966 during an era of cultural apprehension. As a young biracial girl of black and white heritages, I had the unique experience of being raised in a part of the country where being Mulatto was like being an illegal alien. I was uncommon. I grew up thinking I was an all-inclusive identity failure. The world deprived me of my unique individuality, and I allowed negative forces to furnish me with a false identity. That was trouble coming! I felt robbed of my birthright to be “me.” As a little girl, I had noticeably dark and unmanageable curly hair that blended somewhat with my brown skin, but my mother had blond hair and blue eyes. During a tough civil rights era, I could have been the poster child that said, “Unwanted.” Even though my mother and grandparents loved me, it didn’t change the fact that I was unusually different. I felt unhappy and unloved. I was always searching to find acceptance and significance. Growing up, the schools and churches that I attended were predominately Caucasian. Frequently throughout my early education, inquisitive individuals asked me two general questions, which were: “Can I ask you a question?” Quickly followed by, “What are you?” I would brace myself and quiver every time I heard those words in fear of what their reaction would be to my answer. With hesitation, I would mumble, “I am black and white.” I lost count of the tilted heads and “O-Oh” responses! Way back then, I rarely ever saw anyone who looked like me, anyone I could identify with. At the time, I didn’t really understand God’s Word, which told me who I was in Christ and that He would make me the head and not the tail (Deuteronomy 28:13). I guess in retrospect, I felt like I got the “tail” end of the life.

10   OverflowMag.com   September 2012

Because of the intrusive identity questions, I spent a lot of time searching for just that, an identity. Who was I? What am I? I thought if I lay out in the sun long enough, I would get dark enough that people would stop asking me about my ethnicity. I spent a lot of time searching for love, hoping to find an identity there. I also looked to worldly idols in my search. Through all my searching, I did not find happiness or my identity. What I did find was a lot of pain because of poor decision making, failed relationships, and a desire to be a people pleaser. Trying to please others put me in compromising positions, which brought disappointments and caused an even deeper void in my life. As a young adult, having drifted away from the church as a teenager, I found Christ through an industrial accident that left both my hands trapped. As the machine continued to run, in that fearful moment, I faced a crossroads in my life, either call out to Jesus for help or lose full use of my hands. I called out to Jesus and the machine miraculously stopped. He saved me! While dealing with this trauma and a year of rehabilitation, I began to attend a small church in my community. This began my road to recovery and furthered my search for an identity. My career, friendships, and environment changed; God had shifted my life. It was brighter, more prosperous. I relocated to Tampa, Florida. By this time, I had stronger influences and friendships that were Christ-centered. I found a local church and planted my feet there for the next ten years. God took root in my life and really revealed Himself to me. I learned that God’s Word is the truth and that I had to stop believing the lies Satan wanted me to believe about myself. I realized that my identity couldn’t be found in the accusations of Satan or in what any person said or thought about me. I learned that I am in Christ Jesus, and He is the same today, tomorrow, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). I found my identity in Jesus, and my confidence and happiness is in Him. I also learned to love and have healthy balanced relationships because God first loved me. God daily reveals His love for me through His grace and mercy. I feel loved. God saved me through His Son, Jesus. Because He lives, I can live—and live victoriously! His Word, the Holy Bible, is a voice of purpose. I have a purpose, and I am significant. God revealed to me how to love myself, which also freed me to love others. It’s a love that can be found in Him. The Lord led me to share His love with others through missionary work, and I learned a lot about myself by going on mission

trips and sharing the Gospel. I found true joy and purpose, and I’ve never looked back. I now know that I belong to God, and I am secure in His love for me. My Father God knew me before I was even born; I am His creation, formed in His image (Psalm 139:13-16). Long gone are the days of feeling unloved, unequal, and underprivileged. As a child of God, I remember who I am and whom I belong to. This gives me my identity, which is rooted in Jesus Christ and His love for me. Despite some bruising, I am grateful for my journey. God has always been there for me. Just as His Word says, “…the LORD your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you” (Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV). While this journey is unique to me, there are many who have traveled “similar” paths and have experienced feelings of being unloved, thoughts of insignificance, emotional neglect, or in simple

is, behind the shell, there are tears of inadequacies and an urgent plea to be accepted. I lived in that shell for far too many years. It’s time to crack open the shell and find our identity and acceptance through Jesus. As a result of my journey, I have a profound sense of compassion and a gift of empathy. Your greatest testimony often comes from your greatest pain, so share your story. I am proud of my mixed heritage. God created me with a flavor of all ethnicities, and I think diversity is cool. Forty-six years later, I look around and see a land filled with uniqueness, blends rich in history and culture. I still have a heart for missions. I’ve traveled to Alaska, Jamaica, Mexico, and three countries in Africa, just to name a few, sharing the Gospel and bearing gifts. I admire how God created us all so special. I have several aspirations; the opportunities are limitless. Through Jesus, all things are possible. With recent successes emerging from an exciting new career, God has given me opportunities to be an advocate for social issues in the lives of the less fortunate, including promoting a children’s wellness program. Often, this comes with visibility. I am humbled by what God is doing in my life. You have heard it said, “The Lord takes ordinary people with a willing heart and does extraordinary things through them.” It’s true! I give Him all the praise, glory, and honor. He is my Father God. “Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him” (Psalm 34:8, NKJV). My career

“As a child of God, I remember who I am and whom I belong to. This gives me my identity, which is rooted in Jesus Christ and His love for me.” terms, rejection. I personally know rejection can lead to loneliness and isolation. It’s a dangerous place to be. Our Savior, Jesus Christ, understood how it felt to be rejected and isolated from society (Acts 4:11-12). He took our fears, pain, and emotional emptiness to the cross. He made the ultimate sacrifice for me, and He did it for you, too. Because of Jesus, I now truly live a life of joy, forgiveness, and love and you can, too. Far too often, women and young girls of all races, ethnicities, and social and economic backgrounds suffer from low self-esteem, like I did. The truth

accolades are cool, but my story is not about the prize. It’s all about the Giver, and for me, that is simply Jesus and how I found my identity in Him. It’s important to note my story comes with many pages. I didn’t get here alone. God sent wonderful mentors and role models into my life. They welcomed me into their homes and made me a part of their family. I learned a lot from them. I cannot stress enough how important mentorship played a critical ingredient in my life. Now, I am a mentor. I am happily married to a supportive husband, and I have a wonderful daughter who has shared me throughout the years with other children who needed extra encouragement. Thank you, “Musetta!” I love you. And thank You, Jesus, for helping me to find my identity and happiness through You! I can say, “He has made everything beautiful in its time…” (Ecclesiastes 3:11, NIV). ■

Wake Up!

BY CHRIS CHERP

"AS CHILDREN OF GOD, WE NEED TO STOP LOOKING AT OURSELVES AS SINNERS AND BEGIN LOOKING AT OURSELVES AS GOD'S CHOSEN WHO ARE FOREVER RECONCILED WITH HIM."

W

hen you were a child, do you remember hearing the ear-piercing words “Wake Up!” as you laid so comfortably in your bed sleeping? At times, it seemed like my parents got a lot of pleasure from doing that to me. Being a parent now, I have a much better understanding of why my parents found it necessary to wake me up if I tried to sleep past a certain hour in the morning. Things needed to get done, and I was the one who had been chosen to do them. THE CHOSEN The same is true today in the Body of Christ. We, as the children of God, are God's chosen. We need to wake up and realize who we are in Christ so we can accomplish what God has called us to do while here on earth. “Think of the gift you once had in your hands, the Message you heard with your ears—grasp it again and turn back to God. If you pull the covers back over your head and sleep on, oblivious to God, I'll return when you least expect it, break

12   OverflowMag.com   September 2012

into your life like a thief in the night” (Revelation 3:3, MSG). That Message is God's love for us, and we need to begin sharing that love with others before time runs out. In order to successfully share God's love with others, it's critical that we, as New Covenant believers, realize that we are eternally justified by Christ. We need to stop working in vain to obtain our own righteousness by trying to fulfill the law. “So Christ has really set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law” (Galatians 5:1, NLT). We are now under a new and improved covenant—a covenant that has placed us in right standing with God, forever, by the perfect work of Jesus (Hebrews 8:6). When we go out and do the work of the Lord, it's not to gain His approval. It is a result of our righteousness in Christ. We should be sharing God's love with others because of who we are in Christ and what He has placed in our hearts – a desire to bring others to Christ so that they can be reconciled with God. OUR MINISTRY From the moment we wake up, we can begin fulfilling the ministry that God has given to each and every one of His children, the ministry of reconciliation. The word reconcile means “to restore to friendship or harmony” or to “settle or resolve.”1 In 2 Corinthians 5:18-19 (NIV), the Bible says, “All this is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ, not counting men’s

sins against them. And He has committed to us the message of reconciliation.” It’s time we wake up and begin sharing with everyone in our sphere of influence the good news of the restored relationship with God. This is possible through the perfect and completed work of Jesus Christ at the cross. “Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation” (Romans 5:11, NIV). We don't have to be a pastor or a volunteer for a nonprofit organization in order to minister to others. As children of God, we are empowered by Christ, and we are all called to the ministry of reconciliation—even as teachers, salesman, administrative assistants, engineers, cashiers, parents, or coaches—no matter what our profession may be. HOW TO FULFILL IT Fulfilling this ministry is easy once we know who we are in Jesus and what we are called to do. One way we can fulfill this ministry is through the use of our listening skills. Listening to someone share their concern about something dear to their heart is a good way to show them that we really care. We can even give someone a hand physically or financially. When we are asked why we are doing these things, we can tell them that we care for them because Jesus cares for them. When we reveal our desires for the wellbeing of others in our sphere of influence, we gain credibility and eventually an open ear and a softened heart to minister Jesus and our Father's love for them. This environment allows us to share about God’s desire to have a friendship with them through Jesus. We can explain to them that once they receive Jesus as their Savior, their reconciliation with God is eternal, not just until the next sin. This will reveal to them that Jesus came to save, not to condemn (John 3:17). Allowing the power of the Word of God to be spoken into the lives of those around us can forever impact them and bring victory over any circumstance that they may be facing. As children of God, we need to stop looking at ourselves as sinners and begin looking at ourselves as God’s chosen who are forever reconciled with Him. “How? you say. In Christ. God put the wrong on Him who never did anything wrong, so we could be put right with God” (2 Corinthians 5:21, MSG). When we begin to wake up to this truth, we can begin fulfilling our ministry—the ministry of reconciliation. We can begin freely sharing the Good News with our friends and loved ones, ushering them into the eternal family of life. Glory! ■ 1

SEEING PERFECTION THROUGH CHRIST S A LVAT I O N P R AY E R

“Then He adds, ‘Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.’” (Hebrews 10:17, NKJV)

DO

you ever believe God is angry with you, especially when you have a few bad habits you just can't seem to kick? Have you ever struggled with pretending to be the perfect Christian at church while trying to ignore the overwhelming guilt of such a pretense? Do you look in the mirror and feel like a failure? There is good news! God doesn't see you the way you see yourself. You really don’t have to be perfect because Jesus already is. He is the answer! It is because of Jesus that our loving heavenly Father God no longer looks at our sins once we invite Jesus into our hearts (Hebrews 10:17). God sees His children through the filter of Jesus Christ. Since Jesus carried all our sins in His body, we are made righteous by faith in His perfect work (Romans 1:17).

We don't have to rely on ourselves to "make things right" with God. If we have Jesus living on the inside of us, our Father in Heaven looks upon us through a lens that only magnifies His Son. Stop punishing yourself; Jesus' sacrifice was more than enough to put you in right standing with God, forever. Let go and let Jesus do a work in you. Start seeing yourself as a child of God. If you haven’t made Jesus your Savior yet, go ahead and make the most important decision of your life! Invite Jesus into your heart. Know that it's by faith and not by your works that you are saved. Then find a good church that reminds you of who you are in Christ and begin growing as a righteous child of God. Just say this prayer and let someone know you made the best decision of your life today.

Father God, I come before You in the Name of Jesus. Your Word says that “whoever calls on the Name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21, NKJV) and “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9, NKJV). Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me. It is because of Your love that You don't want me to be condemned and punished for my sins. Thank You for sending Your beloved Son, Jesus, to die for me on the cross. Jesus took my sins, penalties, and all my curses and in return gave me His blessing, righteousness, and favor. He got what I deserved so I can receive what He deserves – all good things! Jesus' blood washes me clean from every sin (past, present, and future). On the third day, Jesus rose from the dead and conquered death. Father, I thank You that when You look at me, You choose to no longer remember my sins and that You see me in all the beauty and righteousness of Jesus. Holy Spirit, fill me to overflowing and lead me through this life – thank You, Father. In Jesus' Name, Amen!

IF

your sister or daughter was missing, would you sacrifice your time to find her and bring her home? Would you do everything you needed to do to keep her safe, including putting your own life in danger? It’s a question many of us would readily say ‘yes’ to, even if we had a strained relationship with our missing loved one. In this same way, Jesus came to the world to rescue us and sacrifice Himself for us. Jesus loves us despite our sin and wants to bring us home to our loving Father God. Jesus does not condemn us for our sins, just as He told the adulterous woman in John 8. It’s hard to ignore how often we see Jesus interact with women caught up in prostitution, adultery, and promiscuity in the Bible. We don’t know their complete stories, but we do know He loved them and saw them as worthy in the sight of God. Jesus restored their value and pulled them out of darkness into His light. In John 8:12 (NKJV), after helping the adulterous woman, Jesus said, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life." Jesus brings His light to the dark corners of our hearts, allowing us to abandon our old life and receive new life in Him with no condemnation or guilt. He does this for everyone, including women trapped in an industry that exploits their bodies and robs them of their dignity. These women are someone’s daughter, niece, sister, or mother. The women living in the shadows are loved by God, just as you and I are. Our Father God longs to be in relationship with all of His creation. Jesus' light is penetrating the dark corners of our city – on the streets, in the jails, and in the clubs. Created is a ministry that God is using to share His heart of compassion for women in this industry. Whether we turn a blind eye to these women or not, the fact remains the same – they are precious to God, they were created in His image, and He loves them. Created, which is part of the Underground Network, is here “to restore vulnerable women involved in the sex industry to an understanding of their value, beauty, and destiny by offering them a name, a place, a voice, and a new life in Jesus Christ.”

SHE'S SEEN Joann Gray, founder and co-director of Created, spent nine months in Manila, Philippines, in 2005 with fellow Tampa Underground church members. While there, she worked with Samaritana, a ministry committed to a prostitution-free society in the Philippines. Joann spent time with the women that Samaritana served, and a desire to reach out to women in her own hometown grew in her heart. With over forty strip clubs and countless prostitutes on the streets, it’s no secret that “Tampa is notorious for its sex industry,” Joann said. With no ministry dedicated to these women in Tampa, Joann felt compelled to commit some serious time in prayer, seeking God on what this ministry would look like for our city.

Created was born on the streets of Tampa in September of 2007. “We were meeting women on outreach, and we learned their stories and their needs, too,” Joann said. Created’s approach is to befriend and slowly build relationships with the women they encounter, empowering them to leave their current situation. A lot of women told Joann, “If I had a place to live, I wouldn’t be out here.” That notion of providing a sanctuary where women could be safe, heal, and find refuge in our Savior burned in her heart. Joann brought it to the Lord, and He responded with a house donated for the cause. There were more women to reach than just those on the street corner. Vulnerable women can be found in strip clubs, massage parlors, hotels, jails, and other places that we may not know exist. Many people have the misconception that all of these women chose their lifestyle and don’t want or need help. In fact, the majority of the women Created encounters are gripped by addiction, abuse, poverty, and in some cases, coercion and force—human trafficking. None of these scenarios represent an active choice; it’s quite the opposite. They are deceived into thinking they have no other choice, and the cycle of sadness, isolation, and desperation perpetuates in their lives. The world has ignored this unreached population of vulnerable women for hundreds of years. Today, it’s an estimated $57 billion industry worldwide. Women are abused, assaulted, and coerced for the use of their bodies. Keisha Polonio, co-director of Created, said, “We’re so numb to the reality that [these women] are missing, they are lost, they are broken, and they are hurting.” Unfortunately, evil walks among us. There are people out there who watch and wait so they can prey on the weaknesses of these lost women. Created is here to say, “No more! You can’t have her. She was created for more. God sees her, and she belongs to Him.”

SHE'S VALUABLE The heart behind Created is to help women break free from the illicit industry that they have become chained to and find true meaning for their lives. Created sees them all as valuable and offers a way out and a way to heal through Jesus Christ. Their hope is to help restore them in four important ways: discipleship, identity, community, and advocacy. Discipleship is a new life in Christ. Created shares the Gospel with the women through friendships, mentoring, and small groups.

Identity is a name. They help women understand who they are in Christ and whose image they were created in. Community is a place where they can offer authentic relationships and provide a safe place for the women to live, heal, and worship together. Advocacy is a voice. Created believes every woman has the right to speak and be heard. They advocate for women and empower them to express themselves and find their God-given gifts and talents. This restoration can be accomplished through Created’s residential program. “The main goal for women living in this house is to leave dangerous lifestyles while entering into a committed relationship with Jesus Christ.” The program offers more than the basic needs of housing, food, and clothing. The women receive job search assistance, job skills training, help to meet health needs, one-on-one spiritual counseling, Bible study, practical life skills training (such as budgeting, time management, and nutrition), mentoring, and education assistance, among many others. Created can house up to six women in the intake house as well as four additional women in the back house. The back house is reserved for women (in the program six months or longer) who are transitioning into the next phase of their lives, including re-entering the workforce. During the first three months of the program, the women are encouraged to relax, heal, and ease into their newly changed lives. The road to self-sufficiency will begin after that. The atmosphere at the house is one of love and security, with no room for condemnation or judgment. It provides the women of similar backgrounds a place to gather and interact with God’s Word. Only God can break the power of oppression and provide purpose for their lives. If they know who they are in Christ, they never have to fall back on a way of life that steals their value and self-worth.

SHE'S LOVED KEISHA POLONIO & JOANN GRAY

With a constant waiting list, Joann and Keisha pray for another house. Heartbreakingly, Created cannot house every woman they come across. Along with limited space, there are so many women not yet ready to make this life-changing decision. However, the ministry efforts don’t stop at the residential program. The street and club outreaches and jail visitations allow them to build relationships with the women in this taboo industry. “Created is a presence in the darkness of our city and God is stretching us to go out further,” Joann said. Created is going places that would shock the everyday churchgoer—places most people won’t go—just to tell these women, “You are loved. God sees you. You are not forgotten.” Scripture is clear that Jesus loves us right

where we are. Sharing that revelation with these women, week after week and month after month, plants seeds of love. Keisha explained that it goes a long way when you show them that they are worth the time to stop and visit with on the street or in the club at 1:00 a.m. It makes a difference when all you want to do is show encouragement and interest in their lives. The nature of the industry makes their bodies the focus of who they are, but helping them understand they are

more than an exploited object for human pleasure allows them to believe there is a way out. Created has teamed up with Love’s Way Out the last several years. The ministry was started by Barbara Neu to reach out to Tampa’s exotic dancers. “Barbara had already built relationships with club owners, bouncers, and bartenders,” Keisha explained. “The outreach team goes out to the clubs once a month, bringing small but meaningful gifts to the dancers, which helps to build a relationship of trust with them. We pray with them and for them, which gives God an open door to make Himself known to them in a personal way” (riveroflife-lutz.org/Loveswayout.html). However, this kind of ministry is not for everyone. Keisha recounts, “You look around and see these women being exploited right then and there, and you feel the tension

Jesus said, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life." (John 8:12, NKJV) [between] darkness and light when you walk in. You look at these men that you feel resentment towards, but the reality is, they are broken, too. Having compassion, at the same time, with the fury that is happening in your heart [is hard].” But when you see one of these women make the decision for Christ and leave this world behind, it brings hope back to the cause. Every woman counts in the eyes of God, and Created won’t stop until every woman knows her worth. This theme is also carried into the jails where God blessed Created with an open door. It's not an easy feat to get into the jails to speak with inmates, but God made a way for them through a special lady that helps run the Inmate Programs. Joann explained that Created can give presentations during inmate classes and even have access to the women "in the pods where they sleep and eat and meet with them one-on-one." Created has built relationships with various officials in the court system, including public defenders and judges, so they can advocate for these women who want to leave the sex industry. For women who don't have a healthy support system or home life, Created is here to tell the court system, "We will take her. She is valuable, and she is loved. Release her to us."

SHE'S MORE

There are additional ways we can help Created continue reaching the women plagued by this illicit industry. It can be summed up in one word: GIVE – but that can mean many things. Created operates on the financial donations of people, organizations, businesses, and ministries that believe in restoring vulnerable women. You can make a secure donation at their website (www.createdwomen.com) or you can mail a check to the Underground Network (with Created on the memo line). Another way to give is to donate items, such as women's clothing, gifts for the outreach missions, hygiene products, a ministry vehicle, or any number of other items. For a complete listing, please visit Created's website. You can also volunteer your time and resources. You can join Created during club, street, and jail outreaches, or provide meals for Friday night dinners and Bible studies. Supporters can also donate professional services to the women, such as legal, dental, medical, substance abuse counseling, and job training. If you’re interested in volunteering or helping Created's mission in any way, please contact Keisha for more information at kspolonio@gmail.com or 813-732-3137. The micro businesses are located in Ybor at 1300 East 7th Avenue, Tampa, FL 33605.

Created has found that an important part of the restoration process is for the women to really understand that they are more than their bodies. God has gifted each of them with a SHE'S RESTORED talent, and as they journey down the healing road, the women are encouraged to find meaningful work. them to see the grace of God firsthand by helping Created continue this valuable mission of bringing light into the dark corners of Tampa and beyond. When asked what message Created would like to leave with our readers, Joann said, "I want to challenge them on the view that they have of our women…. It's a growing industry and we cannot ignore it [anymore]. They are human beings, they were created in the image of God, and they matter." We had the opportunity to speak with two of Created’s special women who work in their micro businesses. Linda shared what Created means to her: "It means everything to me. Before I came here, I really had no meaning. I didn't know about God. I had no cause, and I was really lost in addiction. I lost my sense of being; I lost everything. They helped me [to] find myself [and to] come closer to God, and [they] encouraged me. They love me so I can love myself." Christy said, "I didn't feel like I had anywhere to belong. [So] for me, it has been a place where I can learn how to live with other people because I had been in such isolation for a long time that all I knew was myself and my darkness. It's really changed my life completely. I've been able to get treatment, grow closer to God, and be able to communicate with people on a normal level, not any hidden agendas, because I've been so used to people using me. Now I'm in a place where there is actual love, friendship, and commitment." You can read more testimonies on Created's website as well as find a link to the JOY FM’s series on Created. Listening to these women will change your whole perspective on the people affected by this industry. We challenge you to open your eyes to what Jesus wants to accomplish in Tampa. FIGHTING AGAINST HUMAN TRAFFICKING

3 Ministries Working to Stop the Exploitation of Women and Children MISSION: The Rachel Project (RP) was

www.TheRachelProject.com

founded to recover and restore trafficked and exploited people as well as partner with the growing abolitionist movement in our area and internationally. The RP’s goal is to attack Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking on three fronts: Awareness, Advocacy, and Restoration.

FOCUS: We raise awareness by educating the community. The more the community is able to

spot the signs, the better able we are to protect the youth from falling into trafficking situations. We help advocate for tougher laws for the traffickers and the “johns,” as well as greater protections and better identification and classification for victims who are minors. We want to restore by creating safe homes for victims in Tampa Bay to help them heal emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and physically.

HOW: We are working toward getting into the local school systems and bringing an educational

program that will help teach middle and high school students, educators, and parents of the reality of human trafficking in Tampa. RP is an active member of the Clearwater Taskforce Community Campaign against Human Trafficking and a part of Promised Provision International, and RP works throughout the globe in several nations to restore women and combat human trafficking.

SUPPORT: Pray, get educated, and learn the signs. Give online at legacyfam.com (put The Rachel Project in the message box). Support RP through upcoming events: showing of the documentary Nefarious: Merchant of Souls on November 2nd and the Children Remember 5K Run in Tampa this December. For more information and to learn how to get involved, you can reach us at therachelprojecttpa@gmail.com.

MISSION: Rescue1 is an awareness and

www.Rescue1Mission.com

action initiative designed to educate and mobilize the Church and the global community to combat Human Trafficking through prevention, protection, intervention, and correction solutions.

FOCUS: Internationally, we serve with nationals and value their culturally relevant solutions. Together, we developed a prevention strategy to protect the children in villages affected by human trafficking. We have been able to prevent hundreds from having to enter into the "Industry" and rescued several dozen that were in the process of being sold or forced into slavery. We have established six safe houses for these children. Domestically, we are bringing churches, organizations, and individuals together to combat trafficking in America. HOW: Our current project internationally is to build an economic boost in the area where we

are working/rescuing by creating an education center. The 25-acre property will house a school (preschool to high school), a Vo-Tech center/school, a Bible institute, new homes, and staff offices and housing. This will provide a much needed education structure and a source for hundreds to be employed from these vulnerable villages. Domestically, we are partnering with local law enforcement and other anti-trafficking organizations in “hot bed” cities to do both rescue and restoration. We are also looking for property and housing to take care of those being rescued.

SUPPORT: We have many needs that can be filled by those who are willing to give of their time, talent, or treasures. Please contact us for more details of ways to help and volunteer.

MISSION: Our mission is to raise funds and awareness for social causes. Our current focus is Human Trafficking. FOCUS: We accomplish our mission by

creating fashion products, selling them, and donating money from each sale to anti-trafficking initiatives that are on the front lines of the fight. Each product is connected to an Impact Level at each of our four partner initiatives, enabling the person who purchases a product to select what they want their purchase to go towards. There is an orange rose on every handbag and orange stitching on every wallet to make a bold statement to the world that the person carrying it stands against modern-day slavery. Our goal is to help the fashion-conscious be socially conscious so that in carrying one of our products, they “Carry the Cause.”

HOW: Through our three partners,

we support four initiatives around the globe: The A21 Campaign in Europe (thea21campaign.org); GEMS in North America (gems-girls.org); and Not For Sale in Asia and Latin America (notforsalecampaign.org). We also work to raise awareness. We have devoted an entire section of our website to educating people on the issue using statistics, stories, and videos. We also present “Wide Awake,” a presentation on Human Trafficking designed to educate and inspire people to action.

SUPPORT: Purchase

a product and tell the story as you carry it; educate yourself and others on the issue; and help us get the word out about what we do via avenues such as social media and fashion blogs.

PLANTING SEEDS OF PURITY IN YOUNG HEARTS T

he Pure in Heart Conference, which is an interactive one-day event for tween girls and their mothers, grandmothers, or mentors, is coming to Tampa Bay this November. The conference is designed for both girls and women to join in activities through joint and breakout sessions. "The conference teaches young girls practical, biblical wisdom in laying a foundation for making right choices now and for their future," explained Susan Henson, founder of Pure in Heart Ministries based in Tennessee. "It gives moms an undistracted opportunity to connect with their daughter’s heart. It equips moms/leaders to provide their girls with counter-cultural truths for purity and for the battles ahead, and it equips moms with communication skills in order to reach their girls’ hearts before they reach middle school. It also shares a message of hope and forgiveness for women who struggle with teaching their children purity truths when they look back at their own past choices," explained Susan. God laid it on Susan's heart to start this ministry several years ago, after reading The Princess and the Kiss, by Jennie Bishop, to her grandchildren. It is a parable about a little Princess who saves her kiss for the one she will marry. The

King and Queen keep this gift safe until she is grown. The day comes that her parents give the responsibility back to the Princess along with some advice. She takes what they taught her to heart, especially when suitors appear at the castle. At this point in the story, Susan's five-year-old grandson said, "But Gran-mom, [a girl] in my class did not save her kiss – she gave it to me!” Susan explained, "I shot a quick prayer and said, 'Wesley, did you kiss her back?' and he immediately, with a disgusted look on his little face, replied with a very confident, 'No Gran-mom, I don’t want to marry her.' I thought, ‘Well, at least he understood the concept [but] I was overwhelmed.’" Susan didn't think these issues would need to be addressed at this age. "Unfortunately, that sacred window of innocence is being opened way too early today. What used to take place in high school in my day is now happening in elementary school," Susan said. She felt burdened to help capture young children's hearts for purity, not just for her grandchildren, but for children around the nation as well. She co-authored the study guide, Life Lessons from The Princess and the Kiss, which eventually lead to the first Pure in Heart Conference in 2006, and according to Susan, "It was the direct result of hearing the cries of moms everywhere for help: How do I capture my daughter's heart in the midst of her growing up in a sexually saturated world?" The goal is to send these women home feeling well-equipped to address the very sensitive issues of purity with their tween girl. Moms can be assured that this conference only deals with purity of the heart, as Susan explained, "We do not want to steal their innocence." “The goal of the conference is to engage the heart so that God will be glorified and lives will be changed!" Susan said. The girls are engaged all day with majestic visuals, fun

dramas, "Girl Talk Time with Mom," and sessions catered to their specific age group. "It will be filled with power-packed interactive life lessons illustrated through life-size object lessons…. The girls will also design cool take-home crafts. All of this combined together will help the girls to focus their hearts, walk out their identity in Christ by guarding their hearts, minds, and emotions, and choose wise friends," Susan explained. The adult sessions are just as valuable for preparing mom's heart for these tough issues that she and her tween will encounter. They include inspiring testimonies and practical parenting strategies. If you have a special girl in your life, ages 7 to 12, we encourage you to take part as the event will undoubtedly plant seeds

"Pour out your heart like water before the presence of the Lord! Lift your hands to Him for the lives of your children…" (Lamentations 2:19, NRSV). of purity in her heart. Susan said, "I believe the Pure in Heart ministry is a call upon my life, and my desire is to see other women rise up to fight this battle for the next generation. Their purity is worth fighting for." ■ See Pure in Heart's ad for more information about the conference. "Like" Overflow Magazine or write on our wall on Facebook for a chance to win two tickets! HIGHLIGHT

A DIFFERENT APPROACH ...to property management

M

ichelle Pentifallo is a successful wife and mother of two. She also owns a demanding, but rewarding business. As the owner and broker of First in Real Estate Services, Inc. in Wesley Chapel, Michelle keeps a staff of eight real-estate agents and three office employees busily working in both Pasco and Hillsborough counties. Her business life is as full and satisfying as her personal life. Some may not have predicted a happy, productive outcome for Michelle. She had a challenging upbringing, but the love of God and positive role models made a huge impact on her life. Throughout her difficult early years and into her teens, God placed positive people in Michelle’s life. Her loving grandparents provided Michelle with an opportunity to attend church and to learn of God’s love for her. In addition, an extended church family provided positive influences for life’s challenges. Originally saved at the age of six, Michelle rededicated her life to God at nineteen. Soon afterwards, she met and married Joe Pentifallo. Their journey together has produced two happy, healthy children in a home where Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior. After successful management positions in the grocery industry, Michelle decided, with Joe’s support and encouragement, to explore a career in

real estate. She joined the top-producing team at First in Real Estate in Tampa as an assistant. She soon acquired her own real-estate license and excelled in the business. Later, Michelle was introduced to property management. It is a niche many real-estate professionals avoid, but for Michelle, it was a perfect fit. She quickly became a top producer and was promoted to Head Property Manager. Additionally, this energetic young professional managed the office and handled all of the administrative and personnel issues. Recognized as a leader in the industry, Michelle was offered an opportunity to join another company to manage the office and expand the property management division. She took the new job, which later became the springboard for starting her own business. In 2007, Michelle launched her company by partnering with First in Property Management, a DBA of First in Real Estate. Starting with only 28 units in a small office, Michelle grew her business to 100 properties in the first year. When her partner and broker retired in 2009, Michelle earned her own Broker’s license. She continued to grow her business and changed its name to First in Real Estate Services, Inc. She now occupies a 1500 square-foot office. Michelle currently has over 250 single-family homes, townhomes, and

condominiums on her inventory list to rent, sell, and manage. She also enjoys a great working and referral relationship with well-know industry giants such as Keller Williams, Coldwell Banker, Prudential Tropical, Exit Realty, and Remax. Maintaining positive relationships with First in Real Estate Services’ homeowners and renters is a prerequisite for Michelle and her staff. She extends extra effort to be sure all her properties are safe, clean, and welcoming. Michelle enjoys the opportunity that property management offers for extended relationships with the owners and renters. Going the extra distance, making it right, and providing excellent customer service are just a few of the ways Michelle honors God daily in her business. She credits her success to her belief in God and the talents and gifts He has given her. Her number one goal is to “always let Jesus show.” Michelle extends her Christian beliefs into the community where she has shared her leadership abilities by working with the youth at Lifepoint Church, coaching her son’s basketball team, and maintaining a membership in the Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce. She is also an active member of the Central Pasco Christian Business Connections in Lutz. If you need a property manager or need to buy, sell, rent, or lease property, the experienced team at First in Real Estate Services, Inc. can provide the service and professional attention to detail required to put your mind at ease. “We work so you don’t have to,” said Michelle. MY ROCK

SCRIPTURES I STAND ON

Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” This scripture reminds me to let God be in control. If there is something I’m doing and it’s not working out the way I want it to, it’s okay because God has something greater in store for me. I just have to “let go and let God.”

Have a favorite Scripture that you stand on? We are always looking for new people to share what God’s Word means to them. Let us know and we’ll photograph you! contact@overflowmag.com.
