OCTOBER 2012, Issue 32

Dear Friends, Many times as Christians, we focus so much on what we think the enemy is trying to accomplish through certain challenges in our lives instead of keeping our focus on Jesus Christ and what He accomplished for us on the cross. Chris Cherp’s article, “Adjust Your Focus,” reminds us to simply keep our focus on Jesus and to not give the enemy the satisfaction of distracting us. Focusing on Jesus and His love for us is the answer for any circumstance that we may be facing. When we keep our eyes on Jesus, we are victorious over every situation in life. Are you trusting God for a spouse? Cortney Davis shares her transforming and inspiring story of God’s unchanging love for her and His faithfulness in all the details of her life, even in bringing her a spouse. Learn more about Cortney’s journey on page 8 in “Trusting All the Details of Our Lives to a Gracious God.” Our cover this month features Sheriff Chris Nocco of the Pasco Sheriff's Office (PSO). Under the leadership of Sheriff Nocco, a Christ-follower, the PSO is bringing a hopeful tomorrow for Pasco County. After reading Amanda Wright’s article, “Agents of Hope,” you will be encouraged and your perspective on law enforcement officers will be changed for the better. You don’t want to miss learning about Sheriff Nocco and how the PSO is immersing their agency into the community, working alongside the faith-based community to help those struggling with addiction, and collaborating with Christian businesses, ministries, and church leaders to build a better Pasco for tomorrow.

During this political season, emotions are running high. Everywhere you turn, there are opinions flying around and hyped-up political messages on TV, on signs around town, and on the Internet. We are inundated with information that may or may not be true. During this unsure time, there is only One in whom we should put our hope and that is Jesus Christ. No matter what happens in the upcoming election, Jesus is our hope, and we as the children of God will not be forsaken. In Kerry Johnson’s article on page 24, she prompts us to cling to Jesus and His unchanging Word and to allow Him to guide us. Don’t forget that early voting starts on October 27th. Many Christians are apathetic toward voting, and we need to change our mindset. Voting is our responsibility and a privilege as a citizen of the greatest country in the world. This election is crucial for our country, and as Christians, we need to stand up as one and vote based on our biblical values instead of our political party. Let’s measure the candidates’ views and beliefs against the Word of God and pray for the Lord to guide us in our choices. I encourage you to read “What if We Voted as One?” on page 20 for more information on voting and guidance on preparing for the upcoming election. Let’s stand up and vote as the Body of Christ and let the Christian voice be heard. This country was founded on Christian principles, so let’s do our part to help this great nation return to them. If you aren’t registered to vote, you have until October 9th. If you are registered, do your research, pray, and then, go vote! I had the pleasure of getting some encouraging words for our readers (and our community) concerning voting from Pasco County’s Supervisor of Elections, Brian Corley. “With plenty of advanced notice, proper preparation, and three available voting options (i.e., early voting, vote-by-mail, and Election Day), there should be no reason to forgo one of the greatest freedoms afforded to all Americans,” Supervisor Corley said. If you don’t want to stand in any lines or you have a busy schedule, then I encourage you to vote-by-mail. Your vote is important and makes a difference! In this cloudy world, Jesus is the only clear choice for an abundant life here on earth and the only way to have an eternal life with our Father God. If you haven’t made Jesus your Savior, then please visit our salvation section on page 14. It will be the best choice you have ever made. Keep your focus on Jesus and have a blessed October! With Love in Jesus,

Amie Cherp

“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” (Jeremiah 29:11, NIV)

IF

life was a roller coaster, Cortney Davis would be approaching one of those magical peaks where the climb is behind her, the view ahead is clear, and all that is left to do is raise her hands in the air and enjoy the ride. The thrilling ride ahead in Cortney’s life includes completing an internship at South Florida Baptist Hospital, graduating from the Sanford Brown Institute in Tampa with an associate’s degree, and planning a wedding. “Mason jars,” Cortney said with a bright smile and a laugh. Sitting down with me to talk about her long, difficult journey to this good place in her life, she explained, “Jody and I want to serve iced tea in mason jars at our western-style wedding reception.” Jody is the man that Cortney refers to as a “blessing from God,” and even the smallest details of their plans together remind her of how much God is interested in the details of His children’s lives. Both the peaks and valleys of life are made up of challenges, joys, and sometimes, heartache. Raised in a loving home by Christian parents, Cortney grew up with church, summer camp, and vacation Bible school as central themes in her life. She trusted Jesus as her Savior as a young girl, and most of her

extended family and friends were also believers who shared in her love for God. Looking back, Cortney can identify the point at which her life began to derail. The transition from an ideal childhood into the more dubious and vast choices that define young adulthood was not easy for her. Relying more on her desire to please others than on her personal relationship with God, she found herself struggling to “manage” a life that was not meant for her. “My mistakes kept piling up,” she recalled. “Instead of turning to God, I felt so ashamed that I did not know how to go to Him.” Withdrawing inward and no longer reaching out to God, Cortney fell to her lowest point in her early twenties. Prior to this time, she was engaged to a young man in her church. “I think we were just too young, and thankfully we decided to call off the engagement,” she explained. “But, my earliest hopes about the life God had planned for me were about being a wife and a mother.” With these hopes still in her heart, and perhaps providing a subconscious link to God, Cortney pursued another relationship that led to an engagement. “By this time, I was taking medication for depression and struggling to stay in school,” she said. Desperate to make sense out of the

8   OverflowMag.com   October 2012

direction her life was taking, she made another poor choice in the hopes of pleasing someone else. “I left all that was familiar to me and moved south to be with my fiancé at the time,” Cortney said. “Then, rationalizing that I was simply making a financial decision, I decided to move in with him.” She explained that instead of growing in domestic bliss, the relationship continued to be fraught with turmoil, isolation, and lies. While Cortney struggled, neither God nor her family and friends abandoned her. “My mom later told me that she constantly prayed for me,” Cortney said. “And my dad was waiting for the slightest suggestion to come and take me home.” Countless prayers on her behalf rose to God, and in spite of her many attempts at rationalization, Cortney’s heart could not find contentment in her situation. “I see now that God was reaching out to me, pulling me toward Him,” she said. “But, I wondered how He could possibly use me or want me back.” In her despair, she also convinced herself that to forge ahead would be better than facing another failed engagement. It was hard to imagine the broken person Cortney described as I looked at the beautiful, confident young woman that sat across the table from me. “What was the turning point?” I asked. Thoughtfully, she replied, “A friend of mine was tragically killed in a car accident, and I came home for her funeral service.” Cortney listened closely to the pastor’s words

and to the songs that were sung. One song in particular, More Beautiful You by Christian recording artist Jonny Diaz, moved her heart and she began to cry as she considered his lyrics, “perfect just the way they are” and “you were made to fill a purpose that only you could do.” Walking out of the church that day, she silently thanked her friend for helping her believe that she could have a better life—the life God has planned for her. In the days that followed, Cortney humbly asked God for forgiveness. A familiar peace, one that she knew could only come from God, filled her heart and provided rest from so much “trying.” It became clear to her that she should not have to change who she was to be loved. In this truth, she found the courage to end the painful relationship. “For the first time in a long time, I did not care what others would say or think about me,” she said victoriously. “I was somewhere I did not need to be, and I was getting out.” Cortney returned home to family and friends who were not waiting to judge her,

but to embrace her. With their love and support, she slowly began to rebuild her life. Even though she had lost credits during her interrupted attempts at college, she focused on the remaining requirements she needed to fulfill and moved forward. While working part-time, she completed her studies at Sanford Brown and pursued an internship in cardiovascular

ultrasound. She prayed to God, spent time in His Word, and trusted Him with her life once again. Active in her church, she also focused on her love of music and asked God for direction in using her talents to honor Him. So, how did Cortney find Jody? By finding herself and her way back to God. She didn’t have to go looking for Jody at all. In Ephesians 3:20 (NIV), the Apostle Paul describes God as “able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us.” Cortney found that God’s plans exceeded her own expectations. “Jody and I have known each other for a long time, but lost touch over the years,” she explained. “We were reintroduced by friends and began spending time together.” These same protective friends and family took notice of the renewed friendship. “It seemed like everyone else knew we belonged together,” she recalled. “But, after all that I had been through, I was only interested in God’s take on things!” God answered her prayer for guidance, and Cortney and Jody’s friendship grew into a love like none that she had ever known. “He loves me for who I am,” she shared with a smile. “We like to talk and laugh; we are involved in our church; and most importantly, God is the center of our lives.” On July 4th of last year, Jody planned to propose at a family cookout. “But, he was too excited to wait!” she said with a laugh. So, before most of the guests arrived, Jody simply presented Cortney with an engagement ring, a very special ring with a diamond that had belonged to his grandmother. “It did not take long for everyone to find out,” she said. “I was thrilled to share that special moment with the people I love because I owe the wonderful direction of my life to their many prayers and to the loving grace of God.” “Trusting God with all the details of our lives means to trust that He will guide us through both the good and the bad times and use everything that happens to us for our good,” she concluded. “I no longer want to erase the mistakes in my life, but to allow God to use my experiences to help others.” Another prayer of Cortney’s is beginning to become clear. “I believe that God has a plan to someday use my love of music and my testimony to reach out to young girls on the brink of making big choices in their lives,” she said. “I want my life, marriage, and career to reflect my faith in God.” For now, especially since she and Jody are just beginning to collect enough mason jars for a good ole’ fashion wedding reception, she is content to enjoy the moment and leave future details to God. The rest will come, she knows, in His time. ■

HEALTHY LIFE

GET BACK TO GOD'S NATURE BY AMANDA WRIGHT

SO

often in the technological world in which we live, we can get bogged down with work and all kinds of electronic media. With everything from checking e-mail on practically every device to video conferencing on tablets, our minds are constantly engaged to the point of physical fatigue. You can walk around the office at two o’clock in the afternoon and see sleepy eyes and caffeine highs crashing. For me, my best work is done in the morning, but it's still important to utilize our afternoons. It's obvious that our schedules don't stop because we're tired. We don't all have the luxury of taking the remainder of the day off when our mind has started to shutdown from being in overdrive too long. However, we are in control of how we spend our breaks and off time. It's clear in Genesis 1 that God made the earth for mankind. He gave us this beautiful creation to enjoy, to live on, and to provide our sustenance. After listening to a local musician’s new album, All Creation Sings by Jeremy Vanderloop, I was inspired to reflect back on God's creation all around us (check it out on iTunes). We get so caught up in our busy lives that sometimes we forget to appreciate what we have around us – the beauty of God's nature. Recently, I've spent more time during the day taking runs outside. It has helped me greatly. Those 15-20 minutes a day have given me the

ability to clear my mind, breathe in fresh air, and take in the scenery of beautiful trees and landscaping in the area. Just as our bodies need rest, our minds need rest, too. Studies have shown that spending time outdoors can improve memory function, blood pressure, and your attention span – thus reducing stress levels. When we’re outdoors our minds can slow down and our spirits can connect with our Creator and His creation around us. Being outside and hearing the sound of pavement under our shoes can give us a sense of replenishment, energizing us to tackle what the next part of the day may bring. I encourage you to start taking walks on your breaks from work. Take the kids to the park after school or on the weekend. Go fishing or visit the beach. Find time to be outdoors and really enjoy what God has given to us. There are so many beautifully maintained parks, beaches, and outdoor facilities in the Tampa Bay area. Use the time to connect with your family, and if you're having some alone time, connect with Jesus. Take a Bible verse with you and just mediate on what it means for you as you breathe in the fresh air. You can even make a special playlist of worship music for your time outdoors. Let your mind relax and rest in Jesus. You'll be amazed at how rejuvenated you'll feel afterwards. I have no doubt that if you make this a part of your life, you will feel more refreshed, you

will be able to put things into perspective, and you will be more motivated to tackle the tasks at hand once you've had that opportunity to rest your mind. ADJUST YOUR FOCUS

BY CHRIS CHERP

BY CHRIS CHERP

I

am someone who despises giving the devil any type of platform for his deceptive work. It’s a waste of time and effort to spend all of our waking moments focusing on what the devil is doing or trying to do in every situation we face in life. When we spend all our time doing this, our focus is placed on the work of the devil instead of on the perfect work of Jesus that was completed at the cross.

DON'T BE DECEIVED One of the devil’s favorite tactics is to introduce some type of temporary challenge, whether financial, physical, or something else, into our lives to get us to question why these things might be happening. A lot of times the underlying thought behind this question is the belief that God is angry with us and that He must be punishing us for something we did wrong. This is another lie from the father of lies himself, the devil (John 8:44). God is no longer angry with us (Psalm 103:9). Jesus, who was without sin, came to earth and became sin for us and took God’s judgment for us at the cross (2 Corinthians 5:21). For believers, God looks at us through the lens of Jesus and His completed work, not at our efforts to be good. If our efforts were required, then it would be called self-righteousness, not the righteousness of Christ. “We know very well that we are not set right with God by rulekeeping but only through personal faith in Jesus Christ. How do we know? We tried it—and we had the best system of rules the world has ever seen! Convinced that no human being can please God by self-improvement, we believed in Jesus as the Messiah so that we might be set right before God by trusting in the Messiah, not by trying to be good” (Galatians 2:16, MSG). This is the truth behind the perfect work of Jesus on the cross. When we accept Jesus as our Savior, we are forever placed in right standing with God through Christ Jesus, and this gift is eternally protected by the sealing of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13). “A thief is only there to steal and kill and destroy. I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of” (John 10:10, MSG). The thief in this scripture refers to the devil himself. His mission is to get us focused on him and on the dirty little lies that he tries to introduce into our lives (Proverbs 12:19).

12   OverflowMag.com   October 2012

The devil only succeeds when we allow our focus to be taken off of Jesus and placed on him.

THE BEAUTY OF THE TRUTH You see, the purpose of the devil’s work (since Jesus permanently stripped him of all power) is to have us, the children of God, doubt the truth of our eternal right standing with God through Jesus. “In this way, God disarmed the evil rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by His victory over them on the cross of Christ” (Colossians 2:15, NLT). Remember, Jesus came that we may have life—even while on earth—a life better than we could ever dream of because we became coheirs with Christ through the cross (Romans 8:17). When we spend our time and efforts focusing on the devil’s attempts to distract us, we are essentially giving him permission to steal that abundant life from us while on earth.

Our Father God looks at us, His children, as well pleasing to Him through Jesus. Just like an earthly father looks at his children with pleasure and delight—loving them even if they make mistakes—the same is now true with our Heavenly Father. God sent His Son to earth so that we could be in an eternal relationship with Him regardless of what we might do wrong (Romans 5:21). Jesus took our mistakes and bore them on the cross so we could take His righteousness and walk in this life knowing He loves us. My friend, this is good news. Think of it like this: Imagine the best father here on earth. It might be your father or it might be someone else’s father. This father expresses his love for all his children through praises, touch, and gifts for all to see. His children get everything they ever need or ask

for, but this father also spends time with each of them, training them in a way to be grateful for everything they have and to never be afraid to give to others. Because of this knowledge of their father’s love for them, these children grow up expressing this same type of love to everyone around them. That’s the beautiful true picture of our Heavenly Father today.

BOASTING IN HIS LOVE In this life we learn there are no quick fixes, at least none that are legal. However, there is one that will give you victory over any and every challenge you may face in life. This simple remedy is the knowledge of how much we are loved by our Heavenly Father. Whether it’s a physical challenge or a financial challenge, by keeping our eyes on Jesus and what He did for each of us at the cross, we will get through it. I am living proof that exercising the knowledge of our Heavenly Father’s love for us brings an overflow of blessing in every area of life above and beyond what we could ask or think (Ephesians 3:20). Look at John; he referred to himself as “the disciple whom Jesus loved.” He truly kept his focus on Jesus. John was the only disciple who boasted of Jesus’ love for him rather than his love for Jesus (see the book of John). Consider this: John was the only one of the twelve disciples present and in a position to be of assistance to Jesus when He hung on the cross. Jesus asked John to care for His mother while He went away to Heaven (John 19:26-27). After Jesus’ ascension, John was also the only disciple (of the remaining original eleven) who was not martyred. John knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that Jesus loved him—even to the point of dying for him. John kept his focus on Jesus and was blessed because of it. If you are facing a challenge in life and it seems like there is absolutely no way out, look to Jesus. Remind yourself continually, throughout the day, that you are God’s beloved and that He is well pleased with you because Jesus took your place at the cross. It may take some time before you begin to really believe it, but it will happen. When it does, there will be no challenge that you can’t overcome. Let’s stop giving the devil airtime and start giving Jesus all of our time and focus. Remember, our Father God loves us dearly and has made everyone who believes on Jesus coheirs with Him for eternity. In this truth lays the victory to every challenge we face in life. Let's keep our focus on Jesus. Glory! ■

THE CLEAR CHOICE in a Cloudy World

S A LVAT I O N P R AY E R “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28 & 30, NIV)

T

he political season is upon us and with it comes confusion and unrest. This politician said that and that politician did this. Turning the TV on or driving down the road anymore can be stressful with a different political agenda plastered everywhere we turn. There are so many important choices to make for various constitutional amendments and for different government officials in our counties, state, and especially our country. "Who is the right choice?" is the constant topic of conversation for believers and nonbelievers alike. We live in such a cloudy world and sometimes answers to our questions are not always clear. Thankfully, when it comes to man's salvation, there is only one clear choice and that is Jesus Christ. In Matthew 11, Jesus invites those who are weary and burdened to come to Him, promising that He will give us rest. Jesus'

yoke is easy and His burden is light. Vote to make Jesus the leader of your life and He will ease the pain of your past. He will take the weight off your chest and carry it upon His. Relying on the world's way of doing things only perpetuates stress and causes us to be weary and tired of it all. But we don't have to live this way on our own anymore. It doesn't matter what you have done. There is an awesome, loving God who wants to be in a relationship with each of us. He wants to show you there is an easier way to navigate this cloudy world. Jesus Christ is the sunshine, that ray of light, the clear choice. Rest in Him and watch your life transform. Won't you vote for Jesus today and make Him your Lord and Savior? Once you do, take Him to the polls with you this November. The right choices will become clear with Jesus guiding you. ■

Father God, I come before You in the Name of Jesus. Your Word says that “whoever calls on the Name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21, NKJV) and “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9, NKJV). Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me. It is because of Your love that You don't want me to be condemned and punished for my sins. Thank You for sending Your beloved Son, Jesus, to die for me on the cross. Jesus took my sins, penalties, and all my curses and in return gave me His blessing, righteousness, and favor. He got what I deserved so I can receive what He deserves – all good things! Jesus' blood washes me clean from every sin (past, present, and future). On the third day, Jesus rose from the dead and conquered death. Father, I thank You that when You look at me, You choose to no longer remember my sins and that You see me in all the beauty and righteousness of Jesus. Holy Spirit, fill me to overflowing and lead me through this life – thank You, Father. In Jesus' Name, Amen!

AGENTS OF

HOPE LEAD BY PASCO SHERIFF CHRIS NOCCO

i

magine for a moment that you’re a member of a police tactical team set to enter hostile premises to seek out a highly dangerous suspect. You’re the front man, leading the way in with just a shield and a gun to protect you and the officers behind you. You’re on guard every second because you have no idea what situation will unfold as you travel down a narrow hallway. You can’t even wipe the sweat off your brow, lest the distraction rob you of a split-second reaction time. As you move forward, your mind is focused only on the task at hand. The suspect appears seemingly from nowhere with a gun in hand. You don’t have time to think; you just act – disarming the potential shooter. The team successfully apprehends the suspect and takes him into custody. You breathe a long sigh of relief. Now, imagine this is your job, day in and day out. Sheriff Chris Nocco of the Pasco Sheriff’s Office (PSO) is no stranger to this scenario. He said, “Every time you put on this uniform, you know you’re taking a risk. You realize nothing is routine out there and you take nothing for granted.” As a country, we really esteem military personnel and their families for the risks they take to keep America safe, and rightly so. But here at home, do we honor the law enforcement officers who keep our neighborhoods, cities, and counties safe from the harm so prevalent around us? Do we connect our freedom and happiness with police officers or sheriff deputies? Do we thank the families of street cops for sending their loved ones out night after night to protect where we live? After spending time with Sheriff Nocco and Corporal Alan Wilkett of the PSO, we came to realize that law enforcement officers are more than just safety officials and crime catchers. They are agents of hope. The PSO is doing their best to keep the county safe and to make it a place where people can be proud to raise their families. Apprehending criminals may be their main job, but with the leadership of Sheriff Nocco, it has gone far beyond that task. The PSO is tough on crime; however, they are also there to help those wanting to fight addiction

and make changes in their lives. They are immersing the PSO in the community and sharing the responsibility of making the county a better place with the faith community and Pasco citizens. “We are all in this together,” Sheriff Nocco said.

GOD’S PLAN At just 36 years old, Sheriff Nocco has accomplished quite a bit in his law enforcement career. If you ask him how this was possible, he humbly brings the focus back to the Lord. “It was all a part of God’s plan.” Sheriff Nocco doesn’t take personal credit. For him, it’s Jesus, his family, and his fellow officers that have made all the difference. Chris Nocco grew up in a faith-filled home in Philadelphia and always looked up to his father and mother for their leadership roles in the community. His father was a police captain, and his mother worked for the public school system. These professions, along with firefighters and military personnel, are the true hometown heroes in his eyes. From childhood, Chris wanted to grow up to be like these heroes, and he hopes his three children will look up to them as well. The desire to become a police officer was always on his heart, but he also had another passion – football.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13, NIV) Chris explained that when he was in high school, a scholarship to a certain college fell through. It was a broken promise that turned out to be a defining moment in his faith. “Church was a center of our life, [but] my faith got stronger when I was supposed to play college football,” he shared. After hearing the disappointing news, Chris ran out into the freezing Philly air, upset and in search of an answer or direction from God. Wearing just his t-shirt and shorts, he found himself in front of the locked church doors on his knees saying,

17

“God, it’s up to You. Whatever You want; Your will, will be done. It’s up to You from now on.” From that point on, Chris followed the Lord’s plan for his life. He received a scholarship to play football at the University of Delaware and earned not only a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice, but also a Master’s in Public Administration in just five years. His first job as a police officer was with the Philadelphia Public School System. Then Chris had an opportunity to be an officer right outside of Washington D.C. in Fairfax County, VA. While there, Chris said, “I was a part of things in law enforcement that have changed our whole profession, and I realized why God chose to have me go to Fairfax.” Chris was in Pentagon City during the 9/11 attacks as one of the first responders. He was also there during the sniper

incident, anthrax attacks, and mass demonstrations in D.C. He gained valuable experience. Chris said, “I recognized without God, nothing is going to be possible in my life.” Chris would go to Mass during his lunch breaks when he was on duty. God remained at the center of his life and the Lord directed his steps. Those footsteps eventually crossed paths with native Floridian, Bridget, who became his wife and the mother of their children. Before they married, Bridget moved to South Florida for a job and Chris felt led to go with her. He became

a deputy at the Broward Sheriff’s Office. The position was another strategic move by God. Chris was there during the beginning of the prescription pill epidemic. “I remember working midnights in Oakland Park and seeing all these pain management clinics. I realized it was the Oxy,” Chris said. What he witnessed in Broward was just the onset of his passion to fight addiction and drug abuse in the community.

A NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN Another big break in Chris Nocco’s career presented itself when Marco Rubio, now U.S. Senator, became Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives in 2006. Chris was offered the position of Deputy Chief of Staff. Coming off the streets and going into an administrative role wasn’t exactly what Chris saw himself doing, but he couldn’t pass it up. He said, “It was a unique opportunity to spend time in the legislature and have a voice for law enforcement.” During staff meetings, Rubio would ask for the team’s opinions on proposed legislation, and “I could give them a street officer’s perspective of what we need and what the issues were.” Then in 2008, Chris took a position with the Florida Highway Patrol as the Chief of Staff. His time in Tallahassee proved to be invaluable to his later career. However, he shared, “I still had the desire to get back to [local] law enforcement and have a deeper impact.” Chris wanted to have a direct impact on fighting crime, so when former Pasco Sheriff Bob White offered him a job at the PSO, his encouraging wife was ready to move on with him. He entered the PSO as a Captain in 2009. He was promoted to Major and then appointed Sheriff by the Governor when Bob White retired in April 2011. “I keep going back to it – the Lord has a path. You don’t know where that path is going, but you know wherever you are, you make the most out of the situation,” Sheriff Nocco said. And make the most of it he has. His past 18 months as Pasco Sheriff has been nothing short of remarkable. The positive changes and massive affect on the community has not gone unnoticed by the residents, ministries, and business owners in Pasco County. Sheriff Nocco and the team (as he calls the members of PSO) strive to integrate law enforcement into the community and unify the county. They want to change the way people perceive law enforcement officers and their role in society.

SERVING THE COMMUNITY From the book of Nehemiah, Corporal Alan Wilkett (who is responsible for community relations, the volunteer corps, and crime prevention, among other duties) gave us a biblical illustration of how he perceives the PSO’s role and the faithbased community’s role in Pasco County. Led by the Lord, Nehemiah gathered his people to replace the burned gates and rebuild the wall of Jerusalem despite those who said it couldn’t be done. As the Jews were building, they were told of the opposition against their efforts, and Alan explained, “They had the means to build in one hand and the sword to defend in the other” (Nehemiah 4:17). Alan sees the PSO as the “sword” to defend and the faith-based community as the “tool” to build, but together they are working towards the same goal—building a better Pasco County. This is where organizations like RenewPasco come into play. “RenewPasco is a platform to encourage unity

and equip Christian business, church, and ministry leaders in our community” (www.renewpasco.com). The three core principles are: addiction recovery (through Celebrate Recovery), community restoration (through tangible acts of service), and child reunification (through advocating for foster care). Alan explained that “RenewPasco began as a mechanism by which we could bring a consolidated and united effort for all the people [including the PSO] who have the same interest and desires at heart, and that is serving our people, making Pasco safer, and making it a better community to raise our families. The whole concept is together we can do more than we can alone.” Come out to the next RenewPasco meeting on October 15th at Myrtle Lake Baptist Church. Learn more at RenewPasco.com. Alan went on to say that it is the responsibility of the PSO to make Pasco safe, and their vision is to serve the community from a position of strength. This strength doesn’t compromise the compassion they feel for the people that the PSO deals with on a daily basis. However, the job does come with an inherent weakness, Alan explained. The PSO has the ability to modify an offender’s behavior for only a limited amount of time. “We recognize that we cannot change their heart,” Alan said. The short-term solution for a criminal offender is to lock them up in jail, but the reality of the situation is that most will be released back into society. Getting punished for the crime is only one piece of the puzzle. There has to be a long-term solution, and as Alan put it, “The faith community has that unique authority…to change people’s lives and hearts.”

GOING BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY Under Sheriff Nocco’s leadership, Celebrate Recovery (a faith-based 12-step program), was implemented in the Land O’ Lakes Detention Facility. Sheriff Nocco explained that

the program not only deals with addiction, but also the causes of addiction. With the largest detox center in the county, the PSO has a rare opportunity to make a difference in the lives of addicts. Many of the crimes committed by addict offenders are a means to obtain their drug of choice. If they can direct these inmates to Jesus and help them get clean, they stand a chance at a better life, and at the same time, crime is decreased. This long-term solution is supported by a number of churches in Pasco County that hold Celebrate Recovery meetings several days a week to keep the former inmates (and others seeking help) connected and on track. And it doesn’t end there. The PSO is dedicated not only to crime prevention, but also to educating the public—especially the youth. The hope is to derail addictive and criminal behaviors in the family members of offenders. Sheriff Nocco and Corporal Wilkett agree that this is where community interaction is vital to the success of these initiatives by the PSO. Connecting with kids and families through community organizations, resources, and programs is of high importance to the PSO. Sheriff Nocco named a couple of examples such as middle and high schools, the PACE Center for Girls, and the Pasco Police Athletic League. Corporal Wilkett spends a lot of time in the community connecting with various groups and educating them on how to identify dangerous behaviors, avoid trouble, and even how to notify the Sheriff’s Office of a potential crime or suspicious activity. Sheriff Nocco wants to encourage the community to get involved with the PSO. Volunteer, become a Celebrate Recovery counselor at the jail, or just log on to PascoSheriff.com to learn more about the organization that protects the community in which you live.

HOPE FOR PASCO COUNTY “One thing that constantly races through my mind is how can we improve?” Sheriff Nocco said. He wants to help improve the lives of

the PSO members, improve the Pasco Sheriff’s Office as a law enforcement agency, and improve the community. Corporal Wilkett and Sheriff Nocco shared that the deputies of the PSO see “the worst of the worst” on the job. With the understanding of a street cop, Sheriff Nocco felt it was imperative to upgrade the equipment for the deputies to help ensure their safety. Beyond their safety, he wants to serve the members so they can in turn serve the community. Sheriff Nocco leads by the example that Jesus Christ left us of serving others. Corporal Wilkett shared that Sheriff Nocco talks a lot about servant leadership to the members of the agency. “It’s not just a coin phrase for him…these are things he lives.” “It can be a very tough job if you don’t have faith,” Sheriff Nocco said. With one of the largest Chaplain Corps in the state, the PSO provides its members with an outlet to talk to someone about what they experience on the job. Whether it’s a domestic violence call, a murder, or a theft, “we do not want the members to carry this home with them. We want their family life to be productive and happy,” Sheriff Nocco said. “When you do that for 12 hours, your perception of society can change, and that’s why it’s important that we’re getting the members involved in different community activities.” Sheriff Nocco said that only about six percent of the population commits the crime, so community outreach helps deputies to see, experience, and interact with the larger population of people that they work so hard to protect. Sheriff Nocco and the members of Pasco Sheriff’s Office embody hope for a better tomorrow in Pasco County. If reelected, Sheriff Nocco plans to continue fighting drug abuse and promoting crime prevention. He values the PSO’s relationship with the school system and sees education as a critical part to preventing criminal behaviors. Public safety and emergency operations will continue to improve, and the Sheriff’s Office will maintain an integrated connection with the community. As he tells the members of the agency, “Simul Militamus,” a Latin phrase meaning “We Fight as One.” Sheriff Nocco carries this message over to the citizens of Pasco County. He asks, “Pray for us. Pray for our Sheriff’s Office, the members within it for everything they deal with every day, for everything they see. Pray that the Lord keeps blessing us, that we stay on the right path, and that we do the right things for the right reasons.” Together, with Jesus Christ at the core of our intentions, we really can accomplish more and have a confident hope in the future. Glory! ■ To learn more about Sheriff Nocco or the Pasco Sheriff’s Office, visit www.PascoSheriff.com.

WHAT IF WE VOTED AS “ONE ”? BY RANDY AND COLLEEN MAGGARD

As

Americans, voting is our constitutional right as well as our responsibility. However, many Christians are apathetic toward exercising this right. It is a privilege to vote, and the Christian voice should be heard. We are all concerned about the direction that the United States is heading. Every person’s vote does make a difference. As Christians, let’s exercise our right to vote. In the 2008 Presidential election, approximately 131 million people voted.1 According to the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life in 2010, there were over 246 million professing Christians in the U.S.!2 Imagine if we all voted—and voted similarly as Christ-followers. We would see just how powerful the Christian vote could be. How different would America look next year or the year after that? Jesus prayed for me and for you that we, as believers, “may be one” (John 17:21). Let’s claim His prayer for us as a definitive call to reclaim this great country. What if we set aside “red” versus “blue” and truly voted according to our biblical values? In the Bible, God tells us everything we need to know for life here in the greatest country on the planet. And it is indeed the greatest because of Him. The Founding Fathers looked to God for guidance (simply read our nation’s Declaration of Independence). America should be a light to a truly dark world. But that cannot continue to be the case if we neglect to vote according to His principles. First things first, you can’t vote biblically if you’re not a registered voter. If you want to vote in November’s general election, you must register by October 9th. If you want to register to vote, you can go to www.pascovotes.com for Pasco County and www.votehillsborough.org for Hillsborough County. If you’ve changed residence, you can change your address online at those websites as well. It is each voter’s responsibility to study the candidates and know where they really stand to ensure that we are making a godly choice come election time. As Thomas Jefferson once said, “Whenever people are well-informed they can be trusted with their own government.” The Bible reiterates that notion in Acts 17:11, where it states that after

20   OverflowMag.com   October 2012

the Bereans heard a message, they would research the Scriptures to see if it lined up with God’s Word. It is time that we as believers examine the Scriptures to see if the messages from the candidates and their views line up with God’s Word before we cast our vote. We encourage everyone to get to know the candidates as best you can. Information is available online through voting records if he or she is an incumbent. If not, go to the candidate’s website and

Lastly, another part of the upcoming election that should not be overlooked is voting on the proposed Constitutional amendments. Amendments can be daunting to most of us, but they are very important. Two of our favorite websites for Amendment recommendations are the Heritage Foundation (www.heritage.org) and United Christians of Florida (www.unitedchristiansofflorida.com). Once you’ve registered, done your homework, and prayed for God’s guidance—go vote, rain or shine. You can vote by absentee ballot, early voting sites, or our favorite, on Election Day (November 6th). Absentee voting

“It is a privilege to vote, and the Christian voice should be heard.” do research on them, look for affiliations, associations, etc. Read facts on the candidate. Do not rely solely on what you hear or see in the media; much of what we are subjected to is exaggerated hype or sensationalism. If all else fails, make a list of questions and call the candidate. If they are not available at that moment, leave a message. The candidate wants your vote, so you should hear from them eventually. Remember, it is “government of the people, by the people, for the people” (Abraham Lincoln). Politicians work for us. We hire them and we fire them based on our votes.

is the same as voting by mail and a perfect option for those who don’t feel like standing in those long lines on Election Day. To request an absentee ballot, go to the aforementioned websites for your county. If you want to take advantage of early voting, it starts October 27th and ends November 3rd. Those same websites will direct you to the locations and times. With all the advances in technology, voting is just a few clicks on the computer and then a few marks on a paper; it can’t get much more simple than that. God bless America! Let’s stand up as the Body of Christ and vote as ONE! ■ www.archives.gov/federal-register/electoral-college/2008/ popular-vote.html www.pewforum.org/Christian/Global-Christianity-exec.aspx

"America's Godly Heritage clearly sets forth the beliefs of many famous Founding Fathers concerning the proper role of Christian principles in education, government, and the public affairs of the nation." The book, which will be enjoyed by most history-lovers, "also provides excerpts from court cases showing that for 160 years under the Constitution, Christian principles were officially and legally inseparable from American public life. The DVD by the same title graphically displays statistics showing what has happened to America since the courts have begun rejecting the Founders' beliefs.” “This book is an excellent primer for those who want to know more about what was intended for America by the Founders and what can be done to return America to its original guiding philosophy." Clinging BY KERRY JOHNSON

“Guys, you can let go. Let go of the cart.” We were picking up a few things at the store one muggy afternoon. Thunder rumbled outside, the crescendo of rain beating against the store’s roof. Rain poured down—as my well of patience dried up. I tried to ignore the 60 and 65-pound anchors randomly tugging on either side of the shopping cart, wreaking havoc on my ability to steer. "Boys, you can let go." Was that my voice or an animal growling amidst the soccer balls on aisle 7? My older son Cole heard and let go of the cart, but Chase’s hand didn’t budge. Unbalanced, we veered sharply in Chase’s direction. Lord, please help me be nice to my children today. I closed my eyes as Chase’s hand continued squeezing the edge of the reddish-orange shopping cart. We started our shopping excursion on the Lego aisle and then headed to books. Passing all things Lightning McQueen and the summer clearance aisles, I tried maneuvering the cart forward. Instead, I found myself nearly crashing into an end cap with newly released DVDs. I tried not to glare at Chase’s guilty right hand as it gripped the cart like an octopus tentacle. Yet, I had no right to scold them. After all, I had allowed Cole and Chase the freedom to walk around in stores from the time they were toddlers. I wanted them to learn to stay

close by, even when they were physically separate from me. Freedom with boundaries. I had also taught them to grab onto the side of the cart as we moved from aisle to aisle or from checkout line to the parking lot. It made life easier for me and safer for them. So for most of their lives, it’d been drilled into them to cling carefully to the cart. Now, at 6 and 8, they’re pretty good about staying in close proximity to me and the cart. But that day, it seemed like Chase had planted his hand in a puddle of superglue and stuck it on the cart. It was a quiet afternoon and we were nearly alone in the toy aisles. Chase didn't need to cling to the cart, but the training he’d received from his toddler years was part of who he was, affecting his actions and the choices he made.

Jesus is the evidence of God's love for us, the perfect Savior promised by God in His Word—the ultimate confirmation of His amazing grace. We need to teach our children to cling to Jesus, who offers us grace and peace through faith in Him. Throughout Scripture we read about our Creator’s love for us. He knows every place we’ve been and He keeps the tears we’ve shed (Psalm 56:8). God immediately offers His help and protection when we look to Him (Psalm 121:1-8). And for the unbeliever, God will always be found when someone truly searches for Him and confesses Jesus as Savior (Acts 8:26-40). Thank You, Lord, for Jesus. I cling to Him. Through trials, life’s ups and downs, and daily uncertainties, clinging to Jesus will bring a peace that the world cannot offer (John 16:33).

“Through trials, life’s ups and downs, and daily uncertainties, clinging to Jesus will bring a peace that the world cannot offer.” In this election season, with emotions swirling around like wind bands from a hurricane, to what am I clinging? Rather, to Whom am I clinging? When we teach our children about the Bible and about God’s grace, forgiveness, and power, it settles into their intellect. Biblical truths become part of the foundational knowledge that fills their minds. As a parent, I pray that God's Word settles into who they are and who they will become. Equally important is teaching them about the intimate, personal love of our Heavenly Father.

The outcome of this November’s election is uncertain, and many strong opinions abound about who is the best leader for our country. As Christ-followers, we need to place our concerns and worries for our nation in God’s capable, sovereign hands and allow His perfect Word to lead our thoughts and actions – and our votes. Chase’s small hand continued clinging to the reddish-orange cart, and I rubbed my own hand across it, thankful for the reminder to cling tightly to Jesus and His unchanging Word. ■

HIGHLIGHT

INSPIRATION is on the Airwaves! BY ANNE CHILDERS

D

eborah Ray Roseman, owner and general manager of Inspiration AM 1110 (WTIS Christian Talk Radio), oversees operations of the radio signal flowing from the St. Petersburg station throughout the Tampa Bay area. Inspiration AM 1110 transmits with a powerful 10,000 watt day-time signal, covering Hillsborough, Pasco, Polk, Pinellas, Manatee, and Hardee counties. The station’s inspirational, eclectic, lifestyle wisdom is also available 24/7 at www.wtis1110.com where archives of programs can be accessed and live programs streamed. The station was established in 1946, but had various format changes before becoming Christian talk radio in 1976. Deborah said, “Inspiration AM 1110 is the longest airing Christian talk radio in the Tampa area,” bringing informational and empowering messages to a wide range of faithful listeners. The station uses a Christian lifestyle format and addresses issues on spiritual, emotional, physical, and financial health for a considerable audience in a six county radius. Deborah remarked, “Listeners have told us what it has meant to them, to their parents, and to their grandparents who have listened to local and international ministries on Inspiration AM 1110 for over 36 years.” Inspiration AM 1110 brings known speakers and celebrities to the air daily. Nationally syndicated programs such as the Dave Ramsey Show (featuring the guru of debt-free living), The Mike Huckabee Show (featuring former Governor of Arkansas and 2008 Presidential candidate), and Enjoying Everyday Life (featuring well-known author and speaker Joyce Meyer) offer life-affirming and encouraging messages on Inspiration AM 1110. Additionally, Inspiration AM 1110 has programming with a local emphasis such as A.M. Inspiration with Pete O’Shea. You can visit their website to see a complete list of shows. Being the general manager of a radio station was not what Deborah Ray Roseman planned to be when she grew up. Managing the airwaves is not considered a typical job, but then, Deborah is hardly a typical woman. She was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, where she studied immunology and graduated with a master’s degree in laboratory science from the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Deborah envisioned a life in the medical field alongside her first husband, who was an anesthesiologist. He was offered a position as director of a large medical center in the Tampa Bay region, and Deborah was delighted to move to the area.

26   OverflowMag.com   October 2012

They were soon disillusioned with the shift from medical academia to profit-driven private practice. As Christians, they believed in an integrated system of healthcare that treats the entire person, not only physically, but also spiritually and mentally. Sadly, the general medical field was not on board with this approach. In 1982 the young couple took a leap of faith and began a live radio program offering medical and holistic information for a total approach to a healthy lifestyle. God and faith remained the major components that anchored the show as well as the lives of the audience. The first show was aired three hours a day. Guests called in with questions and praise, each leaving with renewed hope after each call. After Deborah was widowed, she sold that program. But in a local women’s Bible study, she listened to God’s call to

return to Christian radio but that path had not yet been revealed. Then just over four years ago, Deborah married Ron Roseman, the owner of Inspiration AM 1110, and she found herself back in an element she knew and understood. When Ron was diagnosed with cancer, Deborah asked God for guidance, praying, “Lord, just show me what I must do.” Deborah knew she could take the stress of running a radio station from Ron, and she stepped up and took over so Ron could concentrate on healing. All the years of experience served Deborah well. She managed and grew the station to the popular spiritual blessing that continues to serve the Tampa Bay area. To add to her blessings, her husband, Ron, has recovered his health. Deborah shared, “Our vision is to educate and empower the listening audience of Inspiration AM 1110 to balanced spiritual, emotional, and physical health through our programming. We want to invite the local community here in Tampa Bay to join us on air as listeners, hosts, and those who spread the message of God’s grace to everyone in our listening audience. We ask Jesus to lead us every day.” Don’t miss the blessing that is Inspiration AM 1110. Tune in on the radio or visit them on the web to enjoy their Christian lifestyle programs. MY ROCK

SCRIPTURES I STAND ON

Romans 8:15 (NIV)

“For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’” This scripture means so much to me because it shows me that God is not just my Protector, Savior, and King, but He’s also my Daddy.

Have a favorite Scripture that you stand on? We are always looking for new people to share what God’s Word means to them. Let us know and we’ll photograph you! contact@overflowmag.com.
