FROM THE EDITOR SEPTEMBER 2011, Issue 20 ____________________________________

Dear Friends, Football season is back. You may have seen some billboards promoting the upcoming football season with the phrase: “Are You Ready?” Well, I know my husband is very ready. Every year he counts the months until football starts again. He really enjoys the excitement of the games, cheering on his favorite teams, and of course, the cookouts. We enjoy having family and friends come over to watch football and to fellowship. It is a nice time to relax (as long as you consider sitting on the edge of your seat and yelling at the TV – relaxing)! There is just a charge in the air that gets everyone fired up. This football season we plan on watching and cheering on our fellow brother in Christ, Adam Hayward. Adam, #57 of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is featured on the cover this month. This talented linebacker shares his story of how Jesus Christ transformed his life. You can read “Playing for The Kingdom” on page 10. I encourage you to read Adam’s story and cheer him on this season. On page 22, we have the conclusion of Tommy Burrus’ short story, “Forgiveness When it Hurts.” You don’t want to miss the end of this story. It is a good reminder that we can forgive others through God’s love and be set free. Did you know that no one, except Jesus, could fulfill the Law? So, God sent His Son Jesus in order to fulfill the old and establish a new covenant. In Chris Cherp’s article, “A New Agreement,” he explains our rights under the New Covenant that we obtained through the

grace of Jesus Christ (see page 14). We activate this agreement by making Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. When we do, we are in right standing with God enabling us to have a personal relationship with Him.

Editor | Amie Cherp amie@overflowmag.com

We can go to Him at anytime for anything we need, whether our request is small or big. Our Father God cares about every facet of our lives. I recently experienced a great example of God caring about even the little things. My three-year-old son really likes to put together puzzles, so Grandma got him a new dinosaur puzzle. He liked it so much and was so excited to put it together for the first time. The next day he got out that same puzzle and began putting it together again. Grandma joined in to help and they got the majority of the puzzle completed when they noticed that the last piece was missing.

Creative | Brady Wright brady@overflowmag.com

We searched the house everywhere we could think of. Grandma kept searching and searching. She had just bought the puzzle, so she didn’t want to give up looking for the missing piece. These are jumbo-size pieces, so we couldn’t figure out how a piece could possibly disappear. After about a week, my son got out his puzzle again. He said, “Mommy, please help me find the piece.” I told him that he should ask Jesus for help, since we couldn’t find it on our own. So, without my help, he said, “Jesus, please help me find my puzzle piece. Amen.” We got up and started looking. Moments later, my husband felt led to see if a puzzle piece could fit beneath the tiny space under our wooden entertainment unit in the family room. Sure enough, a piece could possibly be pushed underneath, so he went and got a flashlight and butter knife. My son and husband inspected the tiny space under the unit and there it was. They recovered the puzzle piece, and we all cheered and praised Jesus. This was a great lesson for my son. I asked him afterward who helped him find that puzzle piece and he said, “Daddy and Jesus.” Jesus is real to my son and he knows that he can ask God for anything and He always provides. Glory to God! This September mediate on the fact that God loves you and cares about every aspect of your life. If you need anything, just call on Him because He is ready and willing to take care of you. Are you ready to receive? With Love in Jesus Christ,

Amie Cherp

bout four years ago, God started me in a new season of my life. I had recently found myself in a new home, in new surroundings, and in need of a new career. So I prayed this: “GOD, in my new job, please allow me to practice my Spanish and to help others, and please do not make me a sales person.” The Lord answered my prayer, but as we all know, He has a sense of humor. I became one of the top ten producing agents at my office. I had the perfect job. Although it was in sales, I considered myself more of an educator. I was happy and content, more so than I could have ever imagined. After the recession started, GOD spoke to me and told me it was time to leave my comfort zone and start my own business. I asked GOD, “People are losing their jobs now and you want me to start a new business?” He said, “Yes, Good Faith Insurance Services will be a testimony to let others know that the world’s economy is not GOD’s economy.” After prayer and fasting, my husband and I both had the same answer: “Do it and trust HIM.” Within two months, Good Faith Insurance Services started to operate at a very affordable location. It was incorporated and even though other agencies like ours sold their first policy within two months, we sold our first policy within the first three weeks. We were already showing a significant net income after paying back our investor in the first six months of business. This is unheard of, since it usually takes about three years before a new business starts producing income. Our second year of earnings tripled even after investing a little more on

equipment and payroll. We are now heading into our third year as a debt-free company. We will have financial stability for the next ten years, even if we do not sell another policy. We are in the process of adding four independent agents to help us with the demand, as it’s becoming more than I can handle on my own. GOD has been so faithful through this process all because we (my family and I) obeyed and trusted Him. I am so grateful for GOD’s blessings and cannot stop thanking Him for all He has done. I was born in Quito, Ecuador S.A. (a third world country), and I remember when my mother told us that we were having our last meal because we had no more food. Now, I own Good Faith Insurance Services and have prospered greatly all because “with God nothing will be impossible” (Luke 1:37, NKJV).

struggled to deal with her illness and lead his life. Then he received a call from his dad. Adam recounted the words his father spoke, “Your mom isn’t doing too good; you need to come home right away.” Pauline Hayward passed away on August 6, 2004. “It made me lose my mind in a sense,” Adam said. When he returned to school he quit football. It was just too much to handle. Adam spent the next year drowning his pain by “getting into trouble, hanging out with the wrong people, and partying.”

>>>BY AMANDA WRIGHT

A

dam Hayward, the 27-year-old linebacker for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, shared his personal story of transformation through Jesus Christ. When meeting this handsome professional athlete, many of his characteristics are clear. He is humble and sincere. Beyond the tattoos and muscle, there is a gentleness about Adam that can only come from one place. He demonstrates a love for the game of football and an even greater love for Jesus. He avidly seeks to utilize his football career to further the Kingdom of God and spread the Gospel wherever he can. He ministers to others in various ways, whether it be by playing his favorite Christian rap in the locker room, traveling to a foreign nation on mission trips, raising funds for breast cancer research, or spending time with underprivileged kids. When Adam surrendered his life to the Lord, he discovered that his old life was gone and a new life in Christ had begun.

A CHILDHOOD DREAM Adam grew up in southern California and started playing sports at the age of six. His first love quickly became football as he told everyone, “I’m going to play professional football.” As a young man, Adam surrounded himself with other ball players and based his identity on the game he was so passionate about. He described his high school experience as a varsity football player, which involved too much partying and not enough studying. He was scouted by 30 colleges, but each opportunity for a scholarship slipped through his fingers as his GPA continued to drop. By Adam’s senior year in high school, only one school maintained their offer and that was Colorado State. The condition was that Adam had to bring up his GPA. So he hit the books, taking seven classes and night school. This wouldn’t be the last time Adam would buckle down and work hard for what he wanted. He succeeded in pulling up his GPA and earned his scholarship to play football at Colorado State, over 1,000 miles away from his hometown. His freshman and sophomore seasons went well as a safety; however, by the summer before his junior year, his mother Pauline fell ill again. She had beat breast cancer once before, but Adam said this time, “It came back three-fold.” By the time football season started, Adam’s head was not in the game. He

Before the next football season started, Adam’s love for the game drew him back in. He knew his mom would not have wanted him to quit, after all she was his biggest fan. He wanted another shot on the field, but his position was already filled. So, he transferred to Portland State University for the 2005 football season, which was his senior year. In 2006, he fought for a hardship to get one more year of eligibility to play. He was successful and played another season at Portland State, which he dedicated to his mom. This was Adam’s pivotal season in which he earned his new position as a linebacker. It was on the 50-yard line of Portland State’s field that Adam began the tradition of kneeling for a prayer to God and a quiet moment for his mother before each game. He still continues this practice today wherever the team goes. Adam worked hard and it paid off. He graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice and was picked in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, fulfilling a childhood dream.

GROWING IN CHRIST In 2009, one of Adam’s teammates, Jermaine Phillips, invited him to Grace Family Church and he started attending periodically. However, Adam was still living his old lifestyle of partying – one that he explains was full of emptiness. Adam was unknowingly trying to fill a void in his heart with all of the wrong things. One Sunday at church, Pastor Craig Altman was giving a message on knowing who Jesus Christ is and knowing Him as your Lord and Savior. Adam said, “I had no idea what he was talking about.” He had been to several Bible studies and church services over the years, but never really paid attention. This time he decided to listen. “By the end of the sermon, I was in tears. I knew that I accepted Him in my heart – that I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior,” Adam said.

11

September 2011   Love+Faith+Hope

After that day, Adam candidly shared that he battled his old lifestyle with the one he wanted to lead as a Christian. He explained it was tough to let go of certain friends, partying, and even music that didn’t glorify God. “For a long time, I was trying to do both. I was going back and forth trying to please everybody and still be the “cool” fun guy to hang out with and be the good-hearted guy I wanted to be and knew I could be – who I was made to be,” Adam said. Adam explained that he would meet with the team Chaplain to study the Bible and then turn around and go out with people he shouldn’t. He still hadn’t quite cleaned up his language yet either and a teammate called him out on it in the locker room: “For a Christian you’ve really got a bad mouth.” Adam responded with another curse word before sitting down at his locker. He broke down and realized, he wasn’t cursing at his teammate - he just cursed at God. “That was God convicting me [to change my ways],” Adam said. He felt that he was not living as he should and needed to give it all up to Christ – really surrender himself. “Right when I did, that weight from the emptiness I had in my heart from my mom dying, that anger I had, it was finally released,” Adam said. He figured out that “no matter what you do, He is still going to love you.” He made the necessary changes in his life and kept seeking God. Adam learned that living for Christ has so much more to offer than his previous lifestyle, and you can still have fun. He enjoys hunting, fishing, scuba diving, and other extreme sports. “I don’t have to get wasted to have a good time,” Adam commented. He also learned that living a Christian lifestyle doesn’t make him weak. As he explained, “I’m not weak by any means. It actually makes me stronger.” This new life with Jesus was a growing process and something he knew he could share with others who’ve had the same struggles.

TO SEE ADAM'S FULL TESTIMONY, VISIT WWW.IDOLSASIDE.COM UNDER THE MEDIA TAB LIVING THE DREAM Growing up, Adam enjoyed watching Baltimore’s Ray Lewis and Tampa Bay’s very own Derrick Brooks play on TV and looked up to them for their amazing talent on the field. He was blessed with the opportunity to play with Brooks for two seasons and “ended up being

PHOTOGRAPH COURTESTY OF THE TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS

under his wing,” Adam shared. Adam recalled his happiest moments in the NFL so far and talked about his experience in San Francisco during the 2010 season. He was told he would get more playing time and was still awaiting his opportunity when something unexpected happened. The team Chaplain told him that the famous In-N-Out Burger of the West Coast was a faith-based fast-food restaurant. “No way,” Adam thought. They visited the burger joint and when Adam turned his cup over there it was – a scripture reference in Proverbs. The print was tiny and didn’t contain the actual text of the scripture. The reference was Proverbs 3:5, which says: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding” (NIV). Adam remembers saying, “You know what, I’m going to trust in the Lord like this cup says.” The very next game they put him in to start and Adam had an amazing game.

MAKING AN IMPACT Adam has embraced his ability to use football as a platform to spread the Word of God. He is an extremely gifted athlete, and he knows only God promoted him to the Pros, so that he will use it for His glory. “God has put me in these situations and molded me to be right where he wants me to be. My vocation, being a football player, is my ministry,” Adam said. With his newfound direction from Christ, Adam started going out in the community more to bring the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ to others. His favorite Christian rap artist, Lecrae, shared with him Romans 1:16, which says, “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes…” (NIV). Adam takes this approach

when sharing Christ with his teammates and others. He will not be ashamed. Score International gave Adam the opportunity to teach American football and serve the people of Costa Rica on mission trips. “In the daytime, we got up early to deliver food to people or to go build stuff. Then, we would eat, change clothes, and teach football until 12 at night,” Adam explained. He found this experience so humbling, as these people live tough lifestyles. He would present the Gospel to the people they were playing football with and the men were receiving it. Adam said it was a blessing to witness. To learn more about Score International, visit their website at www.scoreinternational.org.

ADAM'S RECOMMENDATIONS Being a professional athlete allows him the chance to talk with youth groups, school kids, and football teams. These kids can easily identify with Adam because of his past. He shares with them that they can’t let their past hold them back. He tells them that he faced a lot of trials and tribulations to get to where he is today, and encourages them to never give up and to never think they aren’t worth it or worthy to be a Christian. Being able to share these truths with youth is exactly why Adam enjoys spending time with the kids of Idols Aside, a ministry that reaches people for Christ through sports. Adam is on the advisory council for this ministry and also serves on the board of directors for 4KIDS of Tampa, a “faith-based non-profit organization that focuses on recruiting safe, loving, and stable foster families and others from the community of faith to help children who have been removed from their home due to abuse, neglect, and/or abandonment” (www.4kidsoftampa.com). Adam really loves working with youth, but also is passionate about helping to raise funds for breast cancer awareness and research. Last year, he served as the honorary chairman for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in St. Petersburg. He ran the race in honor of his mother and shared his story with all of the race participants. All of this community involvement, his ministry work, and Adam’s wonderful season last year make it easy to understand why he was chosen as the Bucs’ Man of the Year for 2010. This recognizes his accomplishments on and off the field and also made him a finalist for the NFL’s Walter Payton

Man of the Year Award. He is truly making an impact for Christ everywhere he goes.

MUSIC

LOOKING TOWARDS THE FUTURE Being a professional athlete has a limited timeline. Adam recognizes that he won’t be playing football forever and has to be prepared for what will come next. He can see himself working with youth groups in the church. “I just love working with kids,” Adam said. He has aspirations to start his own foundation in the future with two different branches. One will be a faith-based breast cancer foundation to raise funds through a fishing tournament and the other will be a faith-based youth ministry.

Adam is also involved with The Dream Center of Tampa Bay, which is “a faith-based organization that desires to demonstrate the love and grace of Jesus Christ throughout the East Tampa/Ybor area of Hillsborough County, Florida by providing practical service, meeting needs, and reaching out to the community” (www.facebook.com/dreamcenteroftampa). This is an outreach started by Grace Family Church and will be modeled after Dream Centers in other metropolitan areas, offering sports activities, after school activities, mentoring, and tutoring, among other things. He also chooses to work with people and ministries that further the Kingdom of God. Adam is paving the way for his future, and he has set his sights on ministry work. He thanks God every day for His strength and love that got him where he is today. The most important thing to take away from Adam’s story is that through Jesus Christ we are transformed; our old life is gone and a new life begins! Glory!

Some might say that Adam takes on too much for a young man playing professional

A NEW AGREEMENT >>>BY CHRIS CHERP

R

ecently in my travels I saw a billboard that said "Are You Ready?" with a football scene in the background. As I continued to drive, I thought to myself, “Yes, I am ready for some football!” The National Football League (NFL) season is back after the longest work stoppage in history. The NFL had a work stoppage due to financial and labor negotiations between the league, the owners, and the players. Fortunately, everything worked out in time for the season to kick off with only one casualty, the Hall of Fame game. However, before the football season could move forward, a new labor agreement had to be established. Due to the execution of the new agreement, the old agreement which the players and owners used to abide by is no longer valid. This means that if there are questions on compensation or labor rights, then those seeking answers would need to search the new agreement for the new benefits. A lot can be learned from the old agreement, especially to see how and why some of the new terms were drafted. However, it would be futile for them to spend time searching the old agreement for the new compensation and labor benefits.

“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

The same is true for Christians today. Many believers are looking at the old agreement (or Old Covenant) for their rights and benefits when in fact there has been a new and improved agreement known as the New Covenant established. The old agreement is good to reference, so we can see where enhancements were made in the new agreement and learn from it. However, it is not meant to be referenced for current rights and benefits, for they are new and improved and not found in the old agreement. The new agreement was established at the end of Jesus Christ's walk on earth over 2000 years ago. During that time, He lived under the law of the Old Covenant. Throughout His days on earth, Jesus never sinned even though He was faced with every temptation that we face today (Luke 4:13). Then, the day came when He chose to be the perfect, sinless sacrifice for all who sin and fall short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23). After three days, He rose again stripping the devil of all power and authority (Colossian 2:15). This is when the new agreement of grace (unmerited favor) was established and when every one of our sins (past, present, and future) were paid for, before we were even born. The reason Jesus came to make salvation available to all through a new covenant was because God found fault with the old covenant of

14   OverflowMag.com   September 2011

the law that He Himself wrote on stone for the Israelites at Mount Sinai (Hebrews 8:7; Exodus 31:18, 32:16, 34:1). "By coming up with a new plan, a new covenant between God and His people, God put the old plan on the shelf. And there it stays, gathering dust" (Hebrews 8:13, MSG). Man was not able to fulfill the law and failed every time he tried to, which brought on God's judgment from generation to generation (Exodus 34:7). The law was established to make man aware of sin and the need for a Savior, not for man to be established in self-righteousness (Romans 7:7). The Ten Commandments, or The Law, were fulfilled by only One in the history of man and His name is Jesus.

2 Corinthians 5:21 (NKJV)

By fulfilling the law and becoming the perfect sacrifice, Jesus paid the price for anyone and everyone who believes He is Lord and Savior (Acts 13:39). Similar to paying off a debt, once paid in full, the payments to the lender stop because the debt has been fulfilled. This is how Christians should be viewing the sin debt that we all faced because of Adam’s fall in the Garden of Eden (Romans 5:12). We had a debt to a perfect, sinless God that we could not repay as humans – so God paid it for us through Jesus Christ, once and for all. The new agreement was established so God's people would be in right standing with Him again, based on Jesus' work and not ours. This allows all believers to rely on God for the necessary provision we need to fulfill the destiny He has planned for each of us, through His grace and not our own efforts. We are able to fulfill our destiny when we understand our right standing through Jesus and all the benefits that are ours through the new agreement. So how does the new agreement work? God made it simple. He sent His Son Jesus to do all the work for us through the cross because we could not. Through Jesus' work, we were given a new agreement that changed everything. This new agreement hinges on the fact that God

chooses to be merciful to our unrighteousness and sins and no longer remembers our lawless deeds (Hebrews 8:12)! In order for the new agreement to be executed, all we are required to do is comprehend that prior to receiving Jesus we were unrighteous and could not measure up to a perfect standard, but now we are in right standing with God through Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21). This new agreement cannot be activated by any works we do; we can only receive our righteousness through faith (Romans 4:13). This is done by making Jesus Christ the Lord and Savior of our lives. When we make Him our Lord and Savior, we are dying to our old way, sin, and are re-established in the righteousness of Christ (Romans 6:11; 2 Corinthians 5:21). Make note that both "sin" and "righteousness" are used as nouns (people, places, or things) not as verbs (action words) in these references. We literally move from living in a place of sin to a place of righteousness. As believers, it is so important to understand that it’s not through our works that we benefit from the new agreement with God’s blessings, approval, and favor. It is through relying on the perfect and completed work of Jesus Christ. By Jesus becoming our perfect sin offering, we no longer need to make yearly, weekly, or even daily sin offerings when we fall short because He has already done it once and for all, for everyone who believes He is Lord (Hebrews 10:10). When we know our New Covenant rights and understand that our righteousness comes from faith in Jesus Christ, then no weapon formed against us will ever prosper (Isaiah 54:14-15,17). Fulfilling our call will be a joy not a chore. Our actions, such as serving others and our Lord, will be a result of believing that we are righteous by faith and not a requirement to gain righteousness and blessings from God. We can depend on His unmerited favor for our peace, restoration, and success in life because Jesus Christ hand-delivered our new agreement through the cross. We need to start learning what rights we have as Christians in the new agreement and stop trying to implement the old. When we understand that the new agreement is based on grace and not law, we will have a solid foundation. Then, we can begin receiving all the blessings God has for us through Jesus Christ, which will allow us to serve the Lord and fulfill His plan for our lives. So let me ask you, “Are You Ready” to start experiencing the blessings that have been promised to you in our new agreement? Glory!

SALVATION

LIGHT OF THE WORLD

I “You are the salt of the earth…. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.” Matthew 5:13-15 (NIV)

n Matthew 5:13-16 Jesus tells us that as believers we are the salt and light of the world. He explained that we should let our light shine so that others can see the glorious works of our Father God. The kindness and compassion we show others in our daily lives will reflect the love of God, and those closest to us will want to know where that unspeakable joy comes from. This gives us an opportunity. Do you know how many people we could impact if each of us reached out to just one or two of our own non-believing friends? In 2 Corinthians 5:18-21, Paul explains that through Jesus Christ we have been given the ministry of reconciliation – that is reconciling the world to God. “Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God” (2 Corinthians 5:20, NKJV). We challenge you to act as the ambassador you truly are and minister to those around you.

You can even use Overflow as a tool to lead them to the Lord with the following prayer: Father God, I come before You in the Name of Jesus. Your Word says that “whoever calls on the Name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21, NKJV) and “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9, NKJV). Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me. It is because of Your love that You don't want me to be condemned and punished for my sins. Thank You for sending Your beloved Son, Jesus, to die for me on the cross. Jesus took my sins, penalties, and all my curses and in return gave me His blessing, righteousness, and favor. He got what I deserved so I can receive what He deserves - all good things! Jesus' blood washes me clean from every sin (past, present, and future). On the third day, Jesus rose from the dead and conquered death. Father, I thank You that when You look at me, You choose to no longer remember my sins and that You see me in all the beauty and righteousness of Jesus. Holy Spirit, fill me to overflowing and lead me through this life - thank You, Father. In Jesus' Name, Amen!

HEALTHY LIFE

HEALTHY SNACK OPTIONS ON THE GO! >>>BY ASHLEY POPTODOROVA

I

f you are a frequent traveler or perhaps a notorious “hit the snooze button” kind of person, you may think the drive-thru is your only option for a quick bite. Well here is a pleasant surprise: you CAN eat healthy when you’re on the go! Use this as a guide to avoid swinging through that fast-food joint. Choose healthy options to keep you fueled and your metabolism revved up!

PROTEIN OPTIONS All Natural Deli Meat: Boar’s Head is my favorite option. Choose top round roast beef, turkey, or chicken (but try to avoid ham). Deli meat is so easy to throw in your cooler and whip into a sandwich (try Ezekiel bread) or wrap around celery for an extra crunch.

ENJOY WRITING? Need a platform to share what God has put on your heart? Then we want to hear from you! If you would like to submit an original article to potentially be printed in the magazine, then send it to: contact@overflowmag.com

Canned All Natural Chicken or Tuna: Just pop open the can, drain the water, and season with salsa and salt-free options (such as Mrs. Dash, garlic, or minced dry onion). There are also some fantastic tuna options in pouches in many delicious flavors! However, keep a close eye on the sodium because some of them are high.

Green Granny Smith Apples: Grocery stores usually sell these precut in bags. It doesn’t get any simpler than this! If you look at your local health food store, you can find travel packets of almond butter (try Jason’s) that will pair nicely with this. Raw Food Bars: These are great quality protein bars that are uncooked. Your local nutrition store carries a variety of flavors without all of the guilt. Fat-Free Chobani Yogurt Mousse: Add chocolate protein, sliced strawberries, and pecans to fat-free Chobani yogurt. It tastes like dessert and is a great option if you are around those who are eating dessert. Homemade Brown Rice Chips: Bake a brown rice wrap (try Food for Life brand) on high until they get brown and crispy. It takes no time at all. I break them into pieces and dip in my favorite hummus or salsa.

TIPS

Flavored Protein Bars: Do not get in the habit of eating these frequently. Use these as an “EXTREME pinch” option. The Zero Impact bars (pumpkin) are my favorite. Try heating the bar for 10 seconds (until soft) and then eating it with a cold glass of water or almond milk.

Do you have a kitchen at work? Bring in a 2.5 lb tub of protein powder with your name on it and a small tub of oatmeal to make shakes. You can purchase a Magic Bullet or even bring your blender in. It only takes a minute to run to the kitchen and blend a shake. Try sprinkling cinnamon in it; it’s delicious!

Good Quality Protein Powder: I recommend Bluebonnet, as they have some tasty flavors. Choose one you like and put it in a plastic container. Keep it in your cooler as a back up for those extra crazy days! You can just add the protein powder to water when you’re ready or almond milk if you have some on hand.

For those of you who work at desks all day, I suggest you have a snack drawer! Every week fill it with bars, tuna cans, crackers, and other lean non-perishable snacks. This way when your co-worker offers you chocolate-covered cherries, you can politely turn them down and turn to your healthy snack drawer! You can do it and I am here if you need help.

SNACKS OPTIONS Gluten-Free Crackers: Mary’s Gone Crackers is the brand I buy. You can get these at most health food stores and some grocery stores. They come in a variety of delicious flavors! You can also dip these crackers in hummus for some extra flavor.

FORGIVENESS WHEN IT HURTS - Part 2 >>>A SHORT STORY BY TOMMY BURRUS

This is a continuation of the story from last month’s issue (on page 22). If you did not have the opportunity to read Part 1, then visit www.OverflowMag.com to view the digital issue.

E

dwina was heartbroken, and she was furious with her sister.

"How could you?" she screamed. "What's wrong?" Celesté asked. "As if you didn't know!" Edwina huffed. "You can have any boy you want. Why Calvin?" "Oh, please." Feet stomped and doors slammed. The Cold War wasn't as frosty as the stalemate between the sisters. That Monday, Calvin switched his homeroom and English class, and dropped the journalism class. Edwina was relieved to not have to face him each day with the betrayal.

The next day, Edwina came home from school to find her sister on the phone. Celesté was twirling her hair and smiling, but her face fell when she saw Edwina. She ended the call abruptly. Edwina suspected she had been talking to Calvin.

Celesté had tried to reach out many times over that year, but Edwina did not respond. Celesté sent a wedding invitation, but Edwina threw it in the trash. She didn't go to the wedding. She told her parents that she couldn't get away just then with such a workload at school.

Celesté went out Friday night, but no one came to the house to pick her up. Over the next several weeks, it became a pattern. Edwina threw herself into her studies.

Two months later, Edwina was dumbfounded when her mother called with the news. Celesté was in the hospital. It appeared that she might die without a kidney transplant. Neither of their parents had been a satisfactory match, and Celesté's only hope was her sister.

When the acceptance letter from Princeton came that spring, Edwina's thoughts were more about escaping her past than preparing for her future. While spring brought a thaw to the frozen lands of the north, it had no effect on the brittle coldness between the sisters. Even though she graduated as Valedictorian, Edwina felt numb. She willed herself to close that chapter in her life and move on to college life. She excelled at Princeton primarily because she was not interested in bonding with other people. She made the Dean's list her first semester. Her journalism professor praised the edge in her writing.

22   OverflowMag.com   September 2011

Edwina was on the next flight home. Only after she boarded the flight did the irony settle over her. She wasn't sure if she wanted to help Celesté. She didn't want her sister to die, but how unfair for her sister to get her kidney on top of everything else she'd taken! When she arrived at the hospital, Edwina was taken to a lab where tests were run. When the nurse told her that the results would take a few hours, Edwina was unsure of what to do with herself. Her parents were in Celesté's hospital room, but Edwina was sure that

Calvin would be there as well. She wasn't ready to face him or her sister. As she wandered in search of the cafeteria, she saw the sign for the chapel and felt pulled toward it. Edwina had never been religious. None of her family was, but somehow she felt that she might find some peace and perhaps some clarity in this place. She stepped inside. It was a surprisingly small room. There were three cushioned pews facing a wooden lectern. Behind the lectern was a backlit stained glass with the picture of a dove carrying a leaf in its mouth. The lighting was dim compared to the fluorescent lights in the corridor. She sat on the middle pew. Suddenly, she realized that she wasn't sure what she was supposed to do here. "God, I don't know if you are there, but if you are, I need to know what to do." No answers seemed to come. There was no brilliant flash, no moment of peaceful surrender. Edwina was as conflicted as she'd felt before she'd entered the chapel. With a shrug, she got up to leave. If there was a God, how could He understand what she was going through? As she turned to leave, she noticed a rack of booklets that she had not seen when she entered. In the exact center was one entitled Freedom through Forgiveness. She slipped it out of the rack and flipped through it. The book was about thirty pages long. On the upper right corner of the front cover was the word FREE. She tucked the book under her arm and stepped out of the little chapel. Just down the corridor, she found the cafeteria. She purchased a soda and sat down at the table and began to read the booklet. The story was about someone named Joseph. Apparently, his brothers sold him into slavery and Joseph ended up in Egypt.

as she learned of the many disappointments Joseph had faced. She brightened when she reached the point of the story where Joseph became the most powerful man in Egypt aside from the Pharaoh. She was surprised when Joseph's brothers came down to Egypt looking for food. Before she knew it, she was completely engrossed in the story and eager to see how it

"It is about someone named Joseph." "Oh. I like that story. He always reminds me of Jesus." "Why is that?" Edwina asked. "Well, you know, Joseph was betrayed and mistreated by his brothers, but he forgave them. Jesus was betrayed by one of His

When Joseph revealed himself to his brothers and said, "Don't feel bad, God sent me to Egypt first to preserve your lives," she felt a lump rise in her throat. She read that Joseph also told his brothers, "Don't be afraid of me because even though you meant to hurt me, God used what happened so that I would be able to save our family."

disciples and by His own people, but when they hung Jesus on the cross, He asked God to forgive them. We all have sinned, but Jesus died so we can all be forgiven."

Edwina began to sob quietly, her shoulders heaving with the bitterness that was lodged within her soul. She was startled when she felt a tiny hand on her shoulder. A young teenage girl stood beside her. The girl's skin was so pale it was almost translucent, and she wore a blue bandana over her bald head.

The girl smiled bashfully. Just then, a very tired looking woman walked over to the table. The little girl looked up at her and stood.

"I'm sorry I scared you. Are you okay?" the girl asked.

"No, ma’am. I think God sent your Angel to me tonight."

Edwina said, "Yes, thank you."

The tired mother patted her daughter on the head and explained that they needed to get Angel back to her room. Angel turned back and waved goodbye to Edwina just before disappearing through the doorway. Just then, the nurse from the lab stepped into the cafeteria and noticed Edwina.

"Did the book make you sad?" "Oh, no. I was already sad. I was hoping the book would make me feel happy. My sister is in the hospital and she's very sick." "I'm sorry about your sister. I'll say a prayer for her." "Thank you," Edwina said. She couldn't help but smile at the girl's compassion. "You know, if you want to read something that will make you feel better, you should read a Bible. That always makes me feel better."

"I think you are a very smart girl. I have a feeling that you are the answer to the only prayer I ever prayed," Edwina said.

"Angel, I've been looking for you." The woman turned to Edwina and said, "I hope she isn't bothering you."

"The results are back. You are a match." Edwina smiled, and said, "Perfect timing. Let's go schedule that surgery." â–

This story is fictional and just being used as a means to teach. The names, characters, places, and events were made up or used fictitiously. Any resemblance to real people, places, or events is completely coincidental.

"Well, this book is about a story in the Bible." Edwina found herself identifying with the betrayal of someone who had lived thousands of years ago. Tears streamed down her face

"Really? Which story? I know a lot of them." The girl scooted a chair next to Edwina and sat down.

FORTY YEARS IN THE MAKING >>>SUBMITTED BY RENE VAN HOUT

I

have experienced a lot of tragedy, sadness, and anger in my life. I never knew my father, and my mother died when I was eight. Afterwards my grandparents took guardianship of me and my brothers, and we moved to Tampa to start a new life. I hated my entire childhood. I was constantly bullied throughout school. I never fit in anywhere or kept a friend for long. I wasn't allowed to play sports, join the band, or do after school activities. We didn’t attend church, except on Easter and Christmas. My life always seemed to be out of balance. I was a lost soul no matter where I was or who I was with. I married my high school sweetheart, had a daughter, and then divorced. Several months later, I met my current husband. We moved to Land O’ Lakes in 2001. In 2005, we decided to become self-employed. I got my real-estate license, and we started LOL Transport & Moving to complement my real-estate business. This was both a blessing and a nightmare due to my type-A personality and my tendency to be a workaholic. I kept disappointing myself because I created impossible goals and standards for myself. I burned the candle at both ends and ended up having an emotional breakdown. I shut down completely for about two years because of depression. I never wanted to kill myself, but I didn’t want to live anymore either. I considered myself a failure.

On June 1st, I attended a Bible study and during the discussion, a parent brought up how they love their child unconditionally. I thought of my own child, my 14-year-old daughter. I loved her before she was born. I know that regardless of what mistakes she makes in her life, I will always love and forgive her. “WAIT! I GET IT! God loves me whether I want Him to or not. I don’t need to deserve His love because He is going to love me no matter what! He forgave me before I was born because He is my Father!” These are the words that came belting out of my mouth. I was born again! My walk with God had been one-sided all of my life. Although He has always been there, I wouldn’t allow myself to see Him. But, thankfully, I now have a relationship with Him! On June 12th, I was baptized. A large group gathered in my friend’s home. My Pastor asked that everyone go outside to the pool for the ceremony. As we walked outside, a huge cloud covered the sun. It remained there until the very moment my Pastor excused us to go inside to eat. At that moment, I realized

“I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT FINALLY LIVING MY LIFE IN HIS GLORY!”

Throughout my life, I was asked several times about my spirituality. I would always say that I believe there is something greater than me, greater than anything we can see or touch. My bout with depression left me with a lot of time to myself and my thoughts. I started to really question myself and why I was in the position that I was in. One day about two years ago, I looked at my photo album. It was full of pictures of me and my family doing things together each year, except for the previous two years. The album only had a few pictures from this time period because we weren’t doing anything together due to my isolated depression. I was so upset that I was wasting my life and holding back my family from making fun memories together. This motivated me to start getting out of the house again. I began attending Chamber of Commerce meetings and several business networking groups for our company. Late last year, I started surrounding myself with Christians. In January, I joined Candlewood Community Church and Christian Business Connections. For the first time in my life, I felt like I belonged. There is a connection that Christians have that is invigorating, refreshing, and magnificent. I was drawn to their positive energy and love.

there is no such thing as a coincidence! I believe that God put that cloud there to shield us from the sun. I had told everyone how cool it would be if God put a cloud over the sun just long enough for my baptism, and He delivered my request! My walk with God is in its infancy stage. I look forward to each and every day that God gives me. Jesus Christ is my Lord, my Savior, and my Life! I am so excited about finally living my life in His glory! I see God as my true Father. He has revealed to me that it is okay to come to Him as you are. He has shown me that all of us are His children, and He loves us all unconditionally (as we do with our own children). He knew that before we were born we would make mistakes, but He loves us in spite of that. Since receiving God in my life, my relationships have grown stronger, my moving company was voted Business of the Year, and I am running for 2012 Honorary Mayor of Land O’ Lakes. As a Christian, I see everything differently now. I am growing spiritually for the first time in my life and it feels right! I want to touch people’s lives and make a difference. The difference between the old Rene and new Rene is that now I do everything with God! ■

MY ROCK SCRIPTURES I STAND ON

John 3:30 (NLT)

“He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.” My goals, your goals, my needs, your needs – in this verse John is reminding us that it's all about Jesus' goals and Jesus' needs for our lives. So, every day when we renew our minds that Jesus must take center stage, people will see Him and not just us.
