The Trailer Recovery Plate is an innovative tool designed to streamline and enhance the safety of recovering, loading, and unloading bumper pull trailers. This product addresses common issues faced during trailer operations, such as the risk of damaging wiring when using straps or chains and the challenge of keeping the trailer aligned. By allowing users to attach the correct size ball to the recovery plate and connect it directly to the trailer hitch, the Trailer Recovery Plate ensures that the trailer is hooked up to the center point, preventing it from pulling in unwanted directions.

The type of winch line you use depends on the type of work you do. Some tow operators trust synthetic winch line for all of their recovery work. Others like to use steel rope for heavy-duty jobs and synthetic lines for light-duty applications.
Each type has its own advantages and drawbacks, and the choice may come down to personal preference. Zip’s AW Direct stocks a wide variety of both options and has offered to compare the two in this article. We’ll start the discussion by looking at the pros and cons of synthetic line and then explore
the different options of steel rope available at Zips.com.
The first thing you’ll likely notice about synthetic line is its weight savings over steel rope. Synthetic line is eight times lighter than steel but equally as strong in pulling capacity, providing a great strength-to-weight ratio. Synthetic line is so light it floats, making it perfect for water recoveries. Impervious to water, the rope is also resistant to UV rays and chemicals, keeping it cleaner
and easier to maintain.
Besides being lighter, synthetic line is also safer to handle than its steel counterpart. Steel strands can often fray and cause cuts and slivers for the operator without proper hand protection. Synthetic line, on the other hand, can be handled without gloves most of the time. Synthetic rope is also “torqueneutral,” so the line won’t twist and a swivel hook or shackle is not always necessary under a load.
Consisting of braided plasma fibers, synthetic line also features low-stretch properties and holds no memory, meaning it just falls limp when severed. Unlike steel cable, there is no whiplash effect to cause serious injury to the operator. If it is damaged, synthetic rope can also be repaired in the field.
Thanks to its exceptional handling and maintenance characteristics, synthetic rope is gaining in popularity across the towing industry, according to Zip’s
rigging expert Jeff Lechtenberg. As operators weigh the benefits, Lechtenberg offers the following recommendation when deciding to go with synthetic line on your carrier or wrecker.
“With the proper precautions, synthetic winch lines can be used anywhere a steel winch line can. You just need to make sure the synthetic lines avoid contact with any sharp edges that may cut the line,” Lechtenberg said. “This includes making sure that the winch drum or fairlead doesn’t have any sharp burs on them. You’ll also want to use compatible rigging tools to avoid trouble areas on any wreckage.”
For traditionalists, steel cable still has a home in towing. Operators here are comfortable with its time-tested strength and durability and are willing to live with the extra weight in return. Unlike synthetic rope, they also like how steel cable typically holds up better to jagged edges, although direct contact
with sharp material should be avoided whenever possible, as Lechtenberg indicated above.
Zip’s offer four varieties of steel winch line, including fiber core and steel core. These wrapped lines both feature extra improved plow steel for strength and flexibility. The fiber core rope secretes an internal lubricant under pressure to prevent corrosion, while the steel core offers greater crush resistance and a higher nominal strength.
Another style of steel winch line is called super swaged. For this type, the rope starts off as the next size bigger but, through a process called swaging, is compressed down to the next size smaller. As a result, the outer wires have a larger surface area than standard winch lines. The working load limit remains the same as the original diameter. The compact design offers greater strength than standard winch lines of the same size. Although less flexible, they also provide better resistance to abrasion, kinking and drum crushing.
The last type of winch line to review today is super flex wire rope. This type of winch line offers better performance and increased longevity by containing more wires within a given diameter. This design makes the line more resistant to wear and tear and results in less fatigue.
Visit Zips.com to learn more about synthetic and steel winch lines. On our blog and product pages, you can find a handy sizing guide and complete information on lengths, diameters and working load limits. After doing your own research, you’ll find the type and style you are most comfortable using in the field.
Winches pull a lot of weight in the towing industry. They’re essential to a lot of our operations, so we should do what we can to maintain them. With proper care, a good winch can offer you years of use. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to properly maintain a winch.
The first step in maintaining your winch is simple: know how to use it. Winches differ from brand-to-brand and model-to-model, so knowing what it’s capable of, the proper procedure to use it and the care your specific winch needs will extend its lifespan. By reading your owner’s manual, you can learn the ins and outs of your specific winch. This understanding lets you use it the way it was intended to be used.
Next, you need to check the fasteners to make sure they are tight and have the proper torque. By ensuring they are tight and ready to use, you can significantly lower the chances of a significant failure while the winch is in use. While you’re at it, be sure to check your mounting bolts to ensure they stay secure. Making sure the winch base is secured is just as important. Be sure to replace any damaged bolts or fasteners before using the winch.
Third, check your connections. Be sure to verify that all wiring is correct and that the connections are tight. Check for exposed or bare wires or terminals while also checking for cable insulation damage. If you find any, make sure to cover exposures with terminal boots and repair or replace all damaged electrical cables. This helps prevent electrical issues from faulty wiring. If the winch is hydraulic, check the hoses and connections for cracks and leaks. Ensure that both your hydraulic and electrical connections are secure.
Fourth, be sure to check the winch
line for damage. While winch line maintenance could be its own editorial, you should be sure that your winch ropes are not creased, worn down, or damaged in any way. Replace them if they are. Additionally, you want to lubricate your wire ropes with winch lubricant to help prevent wear and corrosion. Be sure to store them in the proper condition to prevent damage to them. You should also power wrap your winch line periodically to keep the rope tight to the drum.
Finally, you want to ensure that the gears fully re-engage when taking the winch from the free spool. It is best once the free spool locks in to run it out and then back in to ensure proper engagement. If they don’t fully reengage, there is a risk that they could let go, causing whatever load you have on the wire rope to be released. This leads to more damage and danger that can easily be avoided.
Performing basic maintenance is an easy way to keep your equipment in top shape. This helps it stay working for as
long as possible while also preventing unnecessary damage and costs. You can find a new winch, winch lines or the parts to fix issues with your existing winch at Zips.com.

In the fast-paced world of the towing market, ensuring the safety of both operators and cargo is paramount. With the increasing demand for efficient cargo transportation, the use of winches has become indispensable. However, as with any machinery, the potential for accidents is always present. To mitigate these risks, it’s essential to understand and implement safe winching practices.
TIPS FOR SAFE WINCHING AND CARGO CONTROL
1. Personal Protection is a Must: Before even touching the winch, ensure you’re wearing the necessary,
Warrior Winches, a brand founded on family values, commits to donating 1% of all website sales to the Survivor’s Fund at the International Towing and Recovery Hall of Fame and Museum, upholding our belief in making a positive impact on society and supporting our local community.
personal protection equipment. This includes gloves to protect your hands from abrasions, eye protection to shield from flying debris, a hardhat to guard against any falling objects, and a reflective vest or jacket to ensure visibility, especially in low-light conditions.
2. Routine Inspection: Before every use, inspect the winch, cable, and other cargo control components. Look out for signs of wear, fraying, or damage. A small oversight can lead to catastrophic failures, endangering both the operator and the cargo.
3. Clear the Path: Ensure the area around the winch and the path of the cargo is free from obstructions or debris. This ensures a smooth and uninterrupted movement of the load being winched.
4. Secure Attachments: The cable should be securely attached to both the winch and the load. A loose connection can cause the cargo to slip, leading to potential damage or injury.
5. Safety First During Operation: Always keep hands and feet away from the winch during its operation. The moving parts can cause severe injuries if they have contact with the skin.
6. Maintain Safe Distances: Ensure there’s a safe distance between the operator and any bystanders. If
possible, use a dampener or blanket over the cable to prevent it from snapping back in case of a failure.
7. Secure the Load: Once the load is winched into place, disconnect the winch line, and do not use the winch to secure the load. Use cargo control accessories like chains,
straps, and other devices to ensure the load remains in place during transportation.
8. Periodic Testing: Even if the winch isn’t in regular use, test it periodically to ensure it’s in proper working order. This can help identify potential issues before they become major problems.
9. Adherence to Safety Guidelines: Always follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions and guidelines related to winch use. These guidelines are designed based on extensive testing and are meant to ensure the safety of the operator.
10. Shut It Down: When the winch is not in use, ensure it’s turned off. This prevents any accidental activations which could lead to injuries or damage.
The towing market is not static, and innovations continue to shape its future. Modern winches have evolved from their manual predecessors, now boasting electronic control systems for precision, load-sensing technology to adapt pulling force, and wireless connectivity for remote operations. These advancements, combined with safety features like automatic brake systems and emergency shut offs, ensure that modern winching is not only efficient but also safer than ever before.
Warrior Winches have unmatched value, quality, and reliability. The JR series stands as a robust line of hydraulic winches meticulously engineered and proven for the most demanding tasks. These winches range in capacity from 29,700 lbs to 66,000 lbs. Whilst the RV Series of hydraulic winches are designed for tough, commercial, and industrial applications, they range from 8,000 lbs to 18,000 lbs. Both the JR and RV series are carefully crafted to adhere to the stringent SAEJ-706 Standard.
Safe winching practices are not just about following a set of guidelines but understanding the importance of each step. In the towing market, where the demand for efficient and safe cargo
transportation is ever-increasing, adhering to these practices can make the difference between a successful job and a costly accident. Always prioritize safety, stay updated with the latest innovations, and ensure that you’re using the equipment as intended. Safe winching leads to successful towing operations.

BY JEREMY TSAKIRIS – ALLIANCE FUNDING
Finding the right financing is so crucial in the towing industry especially during these challenging times. Often it can make or break the cash flow and profitability of the business. With so many companies and dealer financing options out there, the industry can be enmeshing and mind boggling for owners. To bring clarity for good decision making, I am highlighting key factors that I have learned through my twenty-one years of truck-financing experience that can help guide your choice of a finance partner.
It appears this world is trying to operate with minimal human contact. Though this may be helpful on the spread of infection, it is not helpful from a finance service-provider standpoint. Do yourself a favor and choose a partner that will answer the phone or will promptly call you back. When you are expanding your business or replacing needed trucks which have gone down, you need a finance partner that is knowledgeable, efficient and, for sure, available. Helping you to navigate quickly through processing and titling, the right support will save you needless aggravation and help your business get where you are taking it. Combine this with a finance manager whose character and experience you can trust, and your mind will be at ease. We have received feedback from repeat customers whose have experienced this:
“Jeremy is a stand-up guy and has been financing my equipment for more than seven years. I have never found anyone so willing to help the customer.” Mark Denson- Onsite Towing, Houston, Texas.
Another key factor that I have experienced is to find a finance company like Alliance Funding that is a direct lender on the balance sheet as opposed to a broker. Although a broker can be important for lower-credit scenarios, direct lenders can offer fast processing times, more competitive products by avoiding broker margins, and have the ability to structure the lowest rates, longest terms, and a balloon-payment structure. Our goal is not just a sale for you, but a lifetime of sales earned through excellent service:
“Jeremy Tsakiris is the man. He hooked me up more than once and has definitely earned my business for life.” Trevor Sherrer –California
Equipment finance should be specific to the collateral you want to fund. This may be a confusing statement, but what I have seen through my tenure is that many banks, credit unions, or other equipment finance and capital funding companies will file a blanket lien or incumbent on the business. Alliance Funding, along with a couple of other finance companies that
focus on the towing industry, will only file a lien on the title. They do not take advantage of the customer by burying the blanket lien language in the fine print.
In same context of “buried” info, note what the real prepayment or early payoff numbers look like at the beginning of your decision making. Be specific in your questions, so you can learn what all your financing options are. A good of example of options is leasing. Most of my customers prefer to do a lease purchase for tax benefits. However, in an early buyout situation, a small penalty on the “Principle Remaining Balance” is massively more beneficial than having to pay the whole remaining schedule.
As some of you may know, the tax advantage of a lease purchase program far exceeds that of a traditional loan. A lease purchase program is 100% tax deductible as an expense to the company. A traditional loan is considered an asset where a standard depreciation schedule is applied. This results in a fraction of the write-off to the business.
A common misconception is that a lease-purchase program is more expensive. When, in fact, after factoring in the expense deduction, the result is most beneficial to the entity. The
underwriting requirements do not differ whether I structure the agreement as a lease or a loan. Most financing companies, Alliance Funding included, can do either type of agreement. The lease purchase agreement allows for a longer balloon payment (i.e. 10-30% balloon payment). By doing this type of structure, you are simply allowing yourself more options when the term is over and giving yourself a lower monthly payment through the term. This will allow the business to have a quicker cash flow helping the monthly budget:
“Jeremy from Alliance Funding, helps my customers to whom I sell trucks by structuring their agreements with a balloon payment which helps them meet their monthly budgets.” Ed Stroth, Sales, Twin City Wreckers
In conclusion, financing equipment and trucks is a requirement for many businesses across this beautiful country. Finding a finance partner you can trust in challenging times or times of boom is crucial to the process. When that time comes, you need a partner who is not just knowledgeable and available, but who is also competitive and can approve the financing with your budget and needs in mind. We don’t just want you to survive during this time, we want you to thrive, so please contact us here at Alliance Financing by calling Jeremy Tsakiris at (603) 422-6608 or visiting us at our website at https://alliancefunding.com/ Stay safe, and God bless this great country!
JDFS, Jerr-Dan Financial Solutions, takes a unique approach to finance. Its identity goes beyond generic capital equipment finance. In fact, JDFS is made up of tow truck operators as well as sales and finance professionals who know the towing and recovery industry inside out. Todd Chase, of JDFS, often tells new clients, “We speak your language and understand the challenges tow truck drivers face every day. That’s why you can count on our flexible and fast process to help you identify and finance the tow trucks you need.”
Of course, as is true when using any financial services for leasing or purchasing equipment, using Jerr-Dan Financial Solutions to finance towing and recovery equipment offers the standard advantages versus cash. The buyer improves cash
flow, may protect their creditworthiness, and saves on “soft costs” like tax, shipping, and installation when financing 100% of the purchase.
However, Chase points out that the power of the JDFS program results in wider credit availability, diverse and creative options to help customers that would be turned away from other entities, and an application process that is described by the company as “hassle-free.”
It seems that customers agree. “The last time I bought a truck for the operation, I needed it the same day,” said Tod Coumbe, owner of White Glove Towing in Greenwood, Indiana. “I went to my Jerr-Dan distributor, picked out the truck, worked with the JDFS team to put it together, and drove away with it. I’m definitely going to work with them the next
time I need a new truck.”
JDFS has found that their clients appreciate the sense of partnership that is part of all stages of their financing program. The focus is on a simple, quick process. In fact, customers can apply online and receive a credit decision within 24 hours-guaranteed. Once approved, the team will work with the customer directly to customize a financing solution that meets the specific needs of their business.
Chase said, “We make it easy to grow our customers’ businesses with competitive interest rates and no down payment for qualified buyers. We offer flexible options, with up to 100% financing, because every customer is different. We match the right lease or loan package to each unique business, with terms from 24 to 84 months.”
of the business by financing my first 50-ton wrecker and rotator. They helped me take my business from light duty to full service – I now own a sizable fleet of Jerr-Dan trucks and continue to grow.”
Mark Stockton, the owner of Stockton Towing of Sioux City, Iowa, benefited from this customized approach. As he said, “The JDFS team helped me into the heavy-duty side
