Houston Preschoolers Burst Into Song at Overture Summer Music Camp

Houston, May 1, 2011 ‐ The New Community Music School announces Overture Summer Music Camp, a beautiful experience for children age 3‐5. The camp is located at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, 5315 Main Street. Scheduled for May 26 to July 22, 2011 with single‐week and extended‐day options. Overture is a Gordon Music Learning Theory‐based program (www.giml.org), the first of its kind in Houston.

The first fifteen children to sign up will enjoy individualized pattern instruction in rhythm and melody, live multicultural performances by professional musicians, group improv on classroom instruments, singing, creative movement, crafts, outdoor playtime, and two daily snacks. The low student‐to‐teacher ratio, 8:1, ensures that every camper will receive continuous care and attention.

Overture is different because all the music is live, all the pattern instruction is individualized for each child, and all the teaching is research‐based. We are also different because we know how to encourage healthy singing in young children by modeling proper technique and selecting appropriate repertoire for their cognitive and physical capabilities. We present many international styles of music including West African drumming, western European classical, and American folk. We make sure every child has quiet times in which to think musically and respond naturally. We also apply new science showing that breath‐awareness and intentional movement are central to the development of musical thought and its integration with music making.
