marine marketplace The Great Ocean Road is one of Australia’s most recognised and visited tourist attractions. Since its construction in the early 1900’s, the influx of early settlers and tourists have taken their toll on the road and it’s ultimate demise is drawing to a close. The road itself is a vital means of access for both tourists, residents, and vital produce for the survival of the residents.

Accessibility
Traveling from town to town, the mobile Marine Marketplace will allow for the convenience and communal atmosphere without the constant setup and implementation of infrastructure. The Marine Market will be in the form of a barge, catering to the carrying and distribution of produce.
When the Great Ocean Road becomes obsolete, a viable means of food production and distribution will have to be implemented and utilised by all residents, businesses, and visitors to the area.
Surviving in an isolated society
Home & Communal Growing The localized food production system relies on local farms for general produce as well as home and personal growers for specialty items such as fruit and veg with climate specific growing needs.

IT Systems
The Marine Marketplace is a isolated food production and distribution system whereby residents and regional farmers contribute to a mobile marketplace running the span of the Great Ocean Road between Geelong and Warrnambool. Residents can opt into the service further decreasing their living expenses by producing their own food and contributing to the system, reducing living costs.

Food distribution
Local consumers and growers, regional farmers and the marketplace will use a web based system of tracking, organizing and managing produce both locally and between towns. With the use of this, real-time updates will be accessible for the system constantly on the move.

Local residents play the role of both consumer and producer, engaging first hand in the process of production and delivery. This offers a unique control over what they eat, how it’s produced, and the overall quality. Food production will become a way of life unique to the region.

The marketplace will run on a 7 day cycle visiting each of the participating areas along the way starting with Geelong. A mid week break on Thursday at Port Campbell will allow for maintenance and cleaning of the boat. As it is both a market and a food transport vehicle, cleanliness and hygiene are extremely important. Torquay (9am) Anglesea (3pm)
Check on Order
The IT support system connects the producers, consumers, and the marketplace seamlessly by providing tracking of the marketplace, its available produce, and items being farmed and harvested. The system allows users to connect to one another creating an online community where news, forums, and other home food producing tips and information can be shared.

Access to communities on the Great Ocean Road is currently limited only to the costal two-lane road. The deterioration and ultimate demise of the road will leave not only the communities isolated but the tourism industry stagnant. New opportunities for water borne vacations will be explored using the newly revived sea corridor. A higher level or marine activity will maintain the currently influx of tourists and attract those who want to see the area in a different light. These new tourism sectors and industries will be able to use not only infrastructure but infrastructure implemented for the Marine Marketplace, thus using it to it’s fullest potential.

Local system
Each member town of the marketplace will initate a food trading scheme where residents distribute produce between one another and to local food vendors. Food vendors in the town will cater to non producing locals as well as tourists in the region.
