niagaraparks.com/things-to-do/building-the-power-station

Built in 1905, the Canadian Niagara Power Company Generating Station in Niagara Falls, has been restored and renovated to become an entertaining and educational experience, along with a new nighttime attraction. The one-of-akind structure is considered to be the only fully intact, decommissioned hydroelectric power plant of its era in the world. Its construction was a landmark achievement in design, engineering and architecture, and for 100 years, it harnessed the energy of Canada’s Horseshoe Falls as a source of electricity.

Company. It was inspired by the nearby Adams Generating Station on the American side of the Niagara River. The building sits 457 metres from the lip of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls, with a low profile design and a dark green roof. Stone, brick and cast iron were primarily used in the plant’s construction with integrated steelwork throughout. If looked at closely, one can see that the industrial architecture includes the design details that craftsmen used to pour into important public buildings.

The new nighttime immersive multimedia experience “Currents: Niagara’s Power Transformed” created by Thinkwell Group features sound and 3D projection mapping technology, while highlighting both the history and unique features of the 115-year-old architectural and engineering marvel.

Senior Director of Engineering Marcelo Gruosso was the lead on the engineering side for the restoration and adaptive reuse of the Power Station, with the support of over 100 Niagara Parks staff and 75 contractors. The restoration was completed and the station’s interactive exhibits were soft-opened earlier this summer, on July 1.

The rusticated stone-walled station was originally designed in tandem by the William Grace Company and the Hamilton Bridge Works

MELTwich Food Co.

Cheryl’s Deli & Subs

Crazy McCaws

Crazy McCaws Café – More than a coffee shop, it’s a destination!

Cheryl’s Subs’ secret to success is simply being the best in Niagara Falls

MELTwich Food Co. makes its Niagara debut When it comes to comfort food, there’s one ingredient that usually tops the list: cheese. It’s what helped to draw the Norman family of Niagara Falls to invest in the made-in-Canada casual food chain MELTwich Food Co. Husband and wife duo Sean and Leah Norman opened a Niagara Falls location in the Town and Country Plaza in December. “It’s comfort food, the pandemic just made that something everybody needs,” said Leah of the restaurant, which offers up artisan grilled cheese sandwiches, homemade burgers, poutines, hand-spun milkshakes, salads and soups. Had anyone asked the couple just a few years ago if they envisioned opening up a restaurant any time soon, they would have probably laughed. They’d previously worked in the industry, owning a wine bar in Toronto, but said they’d transitioned out of that life. Sean was familiar with MELTwich from his days working in the restaurant in Port Credit, where he first met company president Tom Mavrou. Back then, the concept was still just an idea. Now, there are locations in five provinces. The Normans said in addition to cheese, they were drawn to the franchise because of its unique offerings such as philly cheese steaks, special poutines, grilled cheeses and they are all made to order! meltwich.ca

12

Cheryl’s Deli & Subs is located at 4912 Victoria Avenue in Niagara Falls. Promoting the ‘best subs in town’, customers know just how good their products are. Every sub they make is fresh and sliced with fresh meat and vegetables. Nothing that goes into their subs comes from a package, and people appreciate that “freshness.” Just opened a few months ago, Cheryl Craftchick has already built up a sizable and loyal clientele. “When we first opened, it was a bit hard for the first two weeks, but after that it’s been easy, because as soon as someone tries one of our subs, they become permanent customers because our subs are so good, they always come back,” said Craftchick. Lineups outside the shop and closing early because she’s completely run out of ingredients are regular occurrences for Craftchick now that she’s hit 300 subs served per day. “I always wanted a place that felt like one of those little ‘ma and pa’ shops, so that’s exactly what we’re trying to do here,” said Craftchick as she put the finishing touches on a towering Cajun chicken sub, stacked high with fresh meat and veg. And while she knows it's a cliché, the secret ingredient is, according to Craftchick, not a big secret at all. “It’s love,” said Craftchick. “Every single sub that goes out my door is made with love, and that makes all the difference.” facebook.com/CherylsDeliandSubs

Synergy Niagara

Tenantcube Provides Digital Property Management “Rental experience” is a relatively new term in the property management industry. It places focus on the whole rental process being relationship-based, rather than transaction-based. Like any business, finding a great customer (tenant) is only the first step. Keeping them long term depends on ease of doing business, kind of service, and the overall experience. Technology can change the way the rental market works, and it is high time for landlords to look back at their business model. The pandemic escalated the demand for more dependable and accessible software for landlords to manage their businesses. There was a huge gap in the market for software that helps landlords perform every aspect of property management and yet is simple and affordable enough for smaller landlords to use.

Synergy Niagara Unites Health & Aesthetics

Synergy Niagara is a health and aesthetics clinic conveniently located downtown, at 4681 Ontario Avenue in Niagara Falls. The clinic is home to multiple business experts focused on accessible beauty and health needs. Bare Painless Laser, Beach Hypnosis and Revitalize Your Health Urinary & Sexual Health Centre operate out of the 2400 sq ft location.

A member of Niagara Angel Network and investor in tech startups, Andrews Moses decided to leverage his IT background and build a property management software. “I put a lot of thought into what kind of software I wanted to build. It should be so easy to use, that even an old-school person who didn’t know much about technology should be able to use it. Next, it should be affordable, so a small landlord does not feel like it is a burden. More importantly, it should enhance the rental experience”, said Andrews. Tenantcube fulfils both needs, and allows landlords to manage multiple properties, create listings, invite applicants, screen applications, sign leases and receive online payments.

\\ SPECIAL PROJECTS Niagara Falls FIREMEN’s Park New Amphitheatre at Firemen’s Park Officially Opens The newly improved amphitheatre area at Firemen’s Park in Niagara Falls officially opened in August of 2021. Upgrades include an enhanced design allowing for a smooth flow of people for outdoor events, and 400 tons of armour stone providing natural, landscaped seating for more than 600 people. The natural setting, park space and surroundings played a big role in the detailed design of the park, and the new renovation includes improved drainage of the site. Park improvements will continue with plans for a new digital sign, entrance feature and upper parking lot improvements. Mayor Jim Diodati said the city has been eyeing improvements at the park since it purchased the property in 2014 from

Members of the Stamford Centre Volunteer Firemen’s Association (SCVFA), who served as stewards of the park for generations before the city purchased it. The work, worth close to $300,000 and including drainage improvements, is the latest major investment by the city in the massive park sprawling over more than 100 acres

atop the Niagara Escarpment at the corner of Mountain and Dorchester roads. Mayor Jim Diodati said the city has committed upwards of $3 million to the park so far, from a new dog park and playground to the amphitheatre improvements.

Niagara District Airport

Niagara Municipalities Seek Operator to Support Growth of Airport The Niagara District Airport Commission (NDAC) released a Request for Proposal (RFP) to source a third-party operator for the Niagara District Airport. “The Niagara District Airport continues to be a valuable asset to the transportation and tourism infrastructure of Niagara,” stated Robin Garrett, Chair of the Niagara District Airport Commission. “To continue to grow the facility, and better support our communities, we are moving forward with a process to identify a partner who shares the same vision for Niagara: a thriving, international tourism hub, where quality of life is enhanced by expanding our connectivity within Canada and beyond.” Currently operated by the NDAC, which includes the City of St. Catharines, the City of Niagara Falls, and the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake. “The operation of a healthy, growing and fully-supported airport is a crucial aspect of a transportation and development plan for any city or region,” Garrett added. “We are thankful that Niagara boasts an airport that has been supported for 92 years; however, for it to fully reach its potential, and for the region to leverage it, we need a partner to direct the operations and manage the investment in the facility.” The partner would facilitate increased infrastructure investments, demonstrate the willingness to strategically grow targeted route development, and shape the airport’s role in connecting with community partners. niagaradistrictairport.com

Ontario Accepting Proposals to Build the New South Niagara Hospital The Ontario government is continuing to support the development of a new state-of-the-art hospital for patients and families in Niagara Falls. Once complete, the new hospital will add more hospital beds and bring together acute care services, improving access to high-quality health care and making it easier for patients to receive the care they need closer to home. With the Ontario government’s support, Infrastructure Ontario and Niagara Health have invited teams to respond to a request for proposals to design, build, finance and maintain the new South Niagara Hospital. To meet growing demand in the region, the new hospital is planned to have 469 beds, which is 156 more beds than the combined total number of beds at Niagara Health’s Port Colborne, Fort Erie and Niagara Falls campuses. Niagara Health will continue to operate the existing facility in St. Catharines, which was opened in 2013, along with the Welland campus.
