GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE

Sedi Halvorson GENERAL MANAGER It is so exciting for all of us here to see outdoor activity again! The club takes on a different feel once the season begins and the days start getting longer and warmer. While we had to wait a bit longer than normal to get the golf season started, I hope that it means we will have terrific spring and summer weather, and maybe even a long fall to make up for it! As usual, we have lots of things coming up on the calendar for you, and now we get to add in golf events as well. Please make sure to check out the events calendar in the following pages, as well as info on all of our outstanding member events this month. Membership As of the end of April, we have had 12 new members and families join our club! This is only the beginning of membership season, so please keep referring your friends and colleagues to your club. We are a bit behind our numbers from last year, which is mostly attributed to our longer off-season and colder weather. Our goal this year is to have 50 families join us this year, and that happens when our members refer the club to others. We are offering great incentives to both new members and current members who refer members to us. Alison has details of this later in the newsletter. Please make sure to read about these, as well as our Membership Preview Night on May 18 th! We would love for all of our members to bring out anyone they know who has interest in joining. We will have live music, hors d’oeuvres, tours, and kids’ activities to give prospective members a sample of what life is like as an Oxbow member.

Annual Meeting Thank you to all who attended the annual meeting on April 30 th! We covered a lot of topics, including all the new and exciting things happening at your club in 2018. Congratulations to Bill Short on reelection to the Board of Directors, as well as new directors Shannon Campbell and Tami Henke. We look forward to their contributions to the club! Tami previously served six years on the board, from 2010 – 2016. Also, two members just completed their terms on the Board, Britton Mattson and DJ Rieger. When you see them out at the club, please give them a big thank you for their service to the membership! MAY 2018 PAGE 2

GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE

Sedi Halvorson (con.) 2018 Golf Season As we get in to golf season, a couple of reminders to all of our golf members. Please make sure you have full sand and seed bottles when you start your round. Typically, we have many ready to go on your cart or by the golf shop. If there are none, please notify the golf shop. We have an amazing golf course. Please assist by filling your fairway and tee divots. Additionally, always repair ball marks on the greens, and try to repair two if you can. Finally, please take time this year to enjoy the north side holes for one last season. Course construction has been a challenge for the club and its members, but I would invite everyone to take advantage of this last season on some of the best golf holes in North Dakota. The north holes are in terrific condition to start the season, showing off one last time for you.

Sign up for junior golf camp!

League Signup!!! Men’s and Women’s League will get underway in a couple of weeks. Since our season is starting a bit later than normal, please make sure to get your team info to the golf shop ASAP! For those of you new to league, women’s teams of two and men’s teams of four play Tuesday nights at 6PM in different competition formats, and usually have lots of fun socializing after! Contact Corey in the golf shop to get your team in today!

MAY 2018

Pool Finally, just a reminder that the pool will open Memorial Day weekend, on May 26th. I know it has been a long winter, and it’s hard to believe that pool season is almost here. We will have many events and activities at the pool this summer, and of course lots and lots of ice cream. Remember to get the kids signed up for swimming lessons. We are excited to welcome back many of our lifeguards from last season to enjoy the summer with you. The weather is starting to look nice (finally), and we are just getting started with the next five plus months of summer fun! See you at YOUR club! Sedi PAGE 3

EVENT UPDATE

Alison molony Director of membership & events Charity Gala Follow-Up THANK YOU to everyone who attended our Charity Gala on April 21st! I’m thrilled to report that we raised over $20,000 that evening for Matthew’s Voice Project, a charity that supports homeless youth in Fargo. Since this organization is run entirely by volunteers, all the money raised will go directly to these kids. I will be sure to provide updates on how these funds were used in future newsletters. It is a pleasure to be part of such a giving membership. If you weren’t able to attend the Gala this year, you won’t want to miss it next year! Membership Preview Night—Friday, May 18th Here’s a chance to show off your club to prospective members! We are planning a lively, family-friendly event on Friday, May 18th. As an Oxbow member, YOU are our greatest resource for growing membership, so I challenge you to invite FIVE people to attend that evening. Oxbow staff will give tours of the facility, light appetizers will be provided, we will hold drawings for some great prizes, and enjoy live music. Doesn’t that sound like a fun night? If you invite guests that evening, I’ll even give you a drink ticket on the house. PLUS, as an added bonus, we will DOUBLE YOUR REFERRAL INCENTIVE if you invite a guest that evening who ends up joining Oxbow this year! I hope you come out to your club on May 18th and show these prospective members a great time!

FOOD AND BEVERAGE

JAKE HUGHES ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER Spring is finely here! The course is open and the club is now open 7 days a week! With the season starting up, we will be moving our ½ price bottle of wine nights to Wednesdays to coincide with Ladies’ Night. Discount is available for dine -in only. Come in and try a nice bottle of wine! Speaking of wine, last week we finished up the last wine dinner until July 11 th for the Americana Dinner. Flora Springs Winery brought in some wonderful collections of wine, one of which will be making it onto our wine menu in the restaurant. Flora Springs Merlot 2015 was a big hit at the wine dinner. Members who attended the dinner bought three cases for themselves! Flora Springs Merlot is 100% Merlot grape and is aged 16 months in small oak barrels. It will be available starting this weekend by the bottle! I am looking forward to another great summer.

MAY 2018

Hello, Oxbow! Golf is finally upon us. We were closed for six months, and it felt like an eternity. We just had the Annual Meeting and now we are looking at the weekend of the Opener. In case you missed the meeting, here are some of the talking points that I went over for the culinary department. Your number 1 dining destination- As your chef, I want Oxbow to be the first place you think about when dining out. Accommodation- This is your club and I want everyone to be able to get what they want. Meaning, if you come in on any given day and you want something that may not be on the menu, I will do my best to make it happen if I have the ingredients on hand. Member club usage- This is right along with accommodation. If you have a special event and you need the help of the culinary department, we will do our best to make it happen for you. If you need a specialty cake, dessert, or anything sweet, I have a wonderful pastry chef on staff! We will always do our best to cater to your needs. Another idea I brought up at the meeting was the chef’s bus trip. This would be open to 15-20 people. I would make all the arrangements for dining. We would do some brewery and distillery tours. Then on the last day (Sunday) go to a football game. The first destination I have in mind is Minneapolis. Next time you are in the club, let me know your thoughts! We’ll see you around the club!! RECIPE OF THE MONTH

RECIPE OF THE MONTH By Scott motschenbacher Guacamole For this month’s recipe, I want to do my guacamole recipe. The sun is finally out and I think this goes great with a bowl of chips and a beer! Ingredients: 1 large fresh jalapeño 2 roma tomatoes ½ a large yellow onion 2 tablespoons of fresh cilantro 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 tablespoon of fresh chopped garlic 1 teaspoon dried oregano 2 ripe avocados (look for avocados that are dark in color and just slightly firm) Juice of 2 limes Procedure: Dice your jalapeños, onions, and tomatoes and place into a mixing bowl. Please remember when you cut peppers such as jalapeños with your bare hands, you get the capsaicin on your fingers. If you rub your eyes or any other sensitive body part, you’re going to be in a bit of pain. I learned this the hard way early in my career. Add the remainder of your ingredients and start mooshing (mooshing is an industry term). After all your ingredients are fully incorporated, enjoy with some chips and cervesas! Pro tip: when storing your guacamole place plastic wrap directly onto the guacamole. This helps to keep any air away. Air will oxidize the guac and turn it brown. Enjoy!!

NEWS FROM THE FAIRWAY

DAVID WOOD SUPERINTENDENT The most frequent question we receive this time of the year is, “How did the course survive the winter?” As things begin to warm up this spring, we are happy with what we are seeing. The grass went into the winter with plenty of moisture and in full dormancy before the snow cover arrived. These are two important factors that can affect turf grass survival through a winter. There are several golf course projects we have identified for the 2018 season to improve playing conditions. Sand depths in the bunkers needs to be restored to two inches on the faces and four inches in the bases. Several wind storms in October and in April have depleted these levels. We have exhausted our sand inventory and we will be ordering more in May.

MAY 2018

Tee box construction for the silver tees on Holes 2, 4, and 5 will begin this summer. The tees will be placed in the same locations as where we are currently playing from. We will remove the native soils and construct these tees with a level sand base. There will be a black/gold tee built on #9 in a similar location to one of the old tees before the levee construction. This tee will allow players to not have to hit off of a mat or the back of old #7 tee. Phase 2 construction is underway. Landscapes Unlimited staff has arrived and started the final tasks before seeding. Greens # 2 and 5 sub-bases are being finalized, with the drainage to begin after. Several tees along the levee that were not completed are being graded and sand placed on them. Holes #3 and #14 irrigation has begun also. The construction and seeding will continue into July, with grow-in of the course lasting all of this year. We will keep you updated on LU’s progress in the coming months. See you the course, David Wood PAGE 15

AERIAL OF OXBOW GOLF COURSE, PHASE I

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT 1975

Jesse Lunde, assistant superintendent On any given day in the summer, our May employee spotlight is at work before most of us wake up for the day. Jesse Lunde, our Assistant Superintendent, starts his work day by 5:30 AM, but loves every minute of it! “I always knew I wanted to work on a golf course,” he says.

Jesse earned his degree from NDSU in Turf Grass Management in 2012. Before starting at Oxbow, he worked in the Grounds Departments at TPC Twin Cities and Moorhead Country Club. A fun fact about Jesse: this is actually the SECOND time he has worked at Oxbow. The first time was as a seasonal employee while he was attending college. In his current role, Jesse works as a “second-in-command” under David Wood. He helps oversee the seasonal staff and gives them their daily tasks. He’s also available to troubleshoot problems throughout the day as needed. Many people are surprised to learn that Jesse works at Oxbow year-round—even when the golf course is closed! In the “off-season”, Jesse keeps busy by grinding the reels on all our mowers to keep them in shape for the golf season to come.

When Jesse isn’t at work, he likes to golf and go to the cabin. Jesse says his favorite golf course (AFTER, Oxbow, of course!) that he’s ever played is TPC San Antonio. In his spare time, he also helps his wife, Allison, with her floral and event design business, Floret + Foliage. Jesse currently lives in South Fargo with his wife, three dogs (Ruxin, Penny, and Carl), and one cat (Louis). If he didn’t work at Oxbow, he says he’d like to be a stay-at-home Dad!

Thank you, Jesse, for the long hours you put in to make sure our golf course is great shape!

P A G E 16

MAY 2018

Though he’s mostly behind-the-scenes, Jesse loves getting to know the members. If you see Jesse out on the course, please say hi and introduce yourself!
