GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE

Sedi Halvorson GENERAL MANAGER It’s hard to believe that we are in to July! June was a great month here at Oxbow, with lots of member activity on the course and pool! We have tons of great events coming up, starting with our Fourth of July celebration, Americana Dinner, Derby Weekend, and so much more! I am particularly excited for our first annual Fourth of July celebration here at the club. I think all of our membership will find this to be an amazing day full of activities for all, and a great show from Memory Fireworks to cap off the evening! Speaking of membership, we now have 38 new members and member families that have joined us in 2018! A huge thank you to all of our members for referring their friends, family, and colleagues to become members at your club. We are still accepting new members, so please keep passing on your referrals to me! Remember that referring members receive a $250 credit in the golf shop or food and beverage for new golf members, $100 in food and beverage for social members. As we head into July and August, we start to have more outside golf events here at the club on Mondays and Tuesdays. However, not all of these events take up the course for the entire afternoon, so please be sure to check the tee sheet online or call the golf shop on Mondays and Tuesdays to see if there is availability.

PAGE 2

JULY 2018

Also, a few housekeeping items from the Club Policies and House Rules that we sent out a few weeks ago: • Proper golf attire must be worn by all members over the age of 12 on the golf course and the practice facilities. For more information on proper golf attire, please see the club policies and house rules that were sent out, or check with the golf shop with any questions. • Pool Guests: A reminder that you may bring a local (resides within 50 miles of the club) guest(s) to the pool once per month, at the guest fee rate of $7/guest. You can bring multiple guests, but the same local guest can only come once per month. The Oxbow pool is typically not crowded, and we want to make sure our members always have plenty of seating and pool room available.

GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE

Sedi HalvorsoN (continued) Lastly, as I wrote last month, please do not drive vehicles, bikes, or anything else on the north holes that are currently under construction, especially between 7AM and 8PM. This is a construction zone with heavy equipment and other dangers that you should not be around. There are also freshly seeded areas that are susceptible to damage from carts, bikes, etc. We want to ensure we can start playing our new course as soon as it is ready next year, and it is important to not cause the construction crews and grow-in crews any more work than necessary. Later this year, we will be offering tours to the members who are interested. Thank you all for a great month of June. We hope you enjoyed your club a lot this past month! We still have so many great things coming your way this summer—we are only getting started. I hope to see you soon, at YOUR club. Sedi

EVENT UPDATE

Alison molony Director of membership & events This month, we are SO EXCITED to bring you a star-spangled 4th of July Celebration! We have put a lot of thought and effort into creating a day designed to keep you and your families entertained all day until our fireworks show at 10 PM. Every year, our mission is to add more value to your membership, and we believe that this is the start of yet another great Oxbow tradition. You can find a full schedule of events on Page 12, but I have highlighted a few activities below: •KIDDIE PARADE—This parade will start at the Event Patio, go around the pool area, and end at the

Oxbow member entrance. Non-motorized “vehicles” (such as wagons, bikes, etc.) may be used in creating your Kiddie Parade entry. We are awarding prizes for Best Theme, Best Costume, and Best “Float”. If you have questions or need help thinking of a float idea, contact me! •BACKYARD GRILL OUT BUFFET—Please note that starting at 6 PM, we will only be serving the Backyard Grill Out Buffet, and the regular menu will not be available. Please RSVP so we can plan accordingly. During the Grill Out, you will also enjoy carnival games and live music by the Front Fenders!

HOLLIE GRANDE CATERING EVENT COORDINATOR Now that we’re full-speed ahead in wedding season, I thought I’d give you a few tips for planning a wedding ceremony. A well thought-out and meaningful ceremony will be the talk of all your guests. First, you need an officiant who understands who you are as a couple. If they don’t know you very well, or don’t get to know you in the planning process, the ceremony won’t have very much meaning.

JULY 2018

Next, you need to plan readings and/or music that says something about your relationship. Just because 1 Corinthians is always used at weddings, doesn’t mean you need to use it too! Maybe Song of Solomon 8:6-7 is more fitting to the relationship you have. Finally, if you want to do a unity ceremony, pick one because you love it, not because you think you need to. While I’m sure you’ve seen sand or candle ceremonies, you could consider the Celtic tradition of tying the knot instead. You could even plant a tree that can be part of your new home together. For those of you who are beverage connoisseurs, you could mix your favorite drink, then serve it from the bar for cocktail hour. No matter what direction you take your ceremony, it will be perfect because it brought you together. PAGE 5

To do this, please follow these guidelines: • • •

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

RECIPE OF THE MONTH By Scott motschenbacher, EXECUTIVE CHEF HOMEMADE ICE CREAM

Hello, Oxbow!! It’s hard to believe that we are already starting July. It seems like there was just snow on the ground. July is going to be a fun month around the club. Starting off, we have our 4th of July bash. It’ll be fun to watch the fireworks from the comfort of the kitchen! On the 11th, we have our Americana Dinner. We have been brainstorming about this event since early this year. This will be an outdoor event with food and paired drinks/wine. Myself and the rest of the team are hoping to turn this event into an Oxbow tradition. Along with everything going on this month, I also hope to make a menu change. This one will be very subtle. The current menu has been performing better than any of the previous I have done here. I have spoken to a number of you and heard your opinions on it. As always, please feel free to email me, call me, or talk to me at the club about your ideas. As always, I’ll see you around the club!! This month, I want to share an ice cream recipe. This will be a base ice cream that you can build on. This is the anglaise method. Ingredients: 3 cups heavy whipping cream 3 cups whole milk (vitamin D) 3 tablespoons vanilla extract or two vanilla beans split 12 egg yolks 1 cup white sugar 1 teaspoon salt

PAGE 8

JULY 2018

Procedure: In a large sauce pan, add cream, milk, and vanilla. Heat this on medium heat until it just barely starts to simmer (just a couple of bubbles rising to the surface). In a large mixing bowl, add eggs and sugar. Mix these two together with a whisk. Slowly add your hot cream mixture to the eggs –not too fast or you will scramble the eggs! Once you have added everything together, pour it back into the sauce pan. You will want to stir this constantly on medium heat. Once it starts to thicken, pull it off the heat. From here, you have the mix to make a vanilla ice cream. You could add 1-2 cups of pureed strawberries for a delicious vanilla strawberry ice cream (or puree of anything you want to try). After the mix has cooled to room temperature, add it to your ice cream maker. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines from here on out. Enjoy!!!

NEWS FROM THE FAIRWAY

DAVID WOOD SUPERINTENDENT New golf construction is moving along quickly. Landscapes Unlimited has seeded six holes in phase two. The first holes seeded (6, 7, and 8), are coming along very well. The grow-in team from Landscapes Unlimited has been mowing these holes on a regular basis and lowering the cutting height as the plants mature.

FUTURE HOLE 7

It is always intriguing to watch when a regular mowing schedule is implemented. The plants become multileafed, stolon and rhizomes are generated and begin to fill the voids between the grass plants. This is the transition from seedling to turf that can support traffic and play. Golf holes 3, 4, and 5 have been seeded and mulched and are starting to germinate. The final three golf holes feature work is almost finished and seeding will FUTURE HOLE 6 begin in July. Their goal is to be completed with construction by mid-July.

JULY 2018

This past week, we were able to aerate greens with a .25 solid tine, down to a depth of 4 inches. A light top dress of sand was applied before the aeration process to help keep the greens smooth and dilute the organic matter buildup. We are planning on doing this several times in the summer to help the air and water movement through the greens root profile. This summer, we have taken an aggressive approach FUTURE HOLE 8 to reducing the grassy weed infestation in the native areas. Several applications of herbicides have been applied and are starting to show effects on the unwanted plants. There is one more follow-up application to be applied in July. We are seeing the effects of the herbicide on the native fescue grasses also. Vertical growth has been stunted and seed production is reduced. Our goal is to clean up these areas and have more of a pure stand of fine fescues. PAGE 15

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT 1975

GARY KILLEBREW GOLF COURSE CONSTRUCTION PROJECT MANAGER This month, we introduce you to the man working diligently every day to make your new course the most desired golf course in the region. Though not technically an Oxbow employee, Gary Killebrew, Golf Course Construction Project Manager, is deeply invested in the future of Oxbow Country Club and is making it is his mission to produce a pristine finished product. “It’s in my nature to take what I am given and make it the best it can be.” This is not Gary’s first time constructing a golf course. He has spent most of his career working on all aspects of golf course construction, from irrigation to drainage, to full course remodels like Oxbow. He has worked with Robert Trent Jones II Golf Course Architects since 2005, and has collaborated with Bruce Charlton (the architect who designed the new Oxbow) on six projects. Prior to working with Robert Trent Jones, Gary spent 21 years heading the golf course branch of an engineering firm out of Utah.

Gary fell into this line of work after earning an Engineering Degree from the University of Utah. His first project was Mount Ogden Golf Course in Utah in 1983. As Gary says, “The rest is history. I love golf course construction. I don’t know what I would do if I hadn’t wound up in this career.” When asked about Oxbow’s new course, Gary refers to all 18 holes as his “children.” He can’t pick a favorite. He explains, “The new course is beautifully and subtly designed. In its finished state, it will be a gorgeous, prairie-style course. The holes that will open next year are more contained than the south side holes, so you will see more movement. The course is striking to the eye, will play well, and is as challenging as you want to make it.”

Various golf course projects have brought Gary around the world to interesting and exotic locations like South America, Thailand, Ireland, Sweden, and Portugal. He honestly cannot choose a favorite project he has worked on, though he says his favorite place he has traveled is a tie between Portugal and Colombia. When Gary is not traveling the world, he makes his home in Warren, Utah, a rural farming community. Gary has a wife, two children, and one grandchild, as well as several racing horses. Though Gary doesn’t get to spend much time actually PLAYING golf, he says he used to have a 12 or 13 handicap when he used to play a lot.

P A G E 16

JULY 2018

If you ever get a chance to talk to Gary, you will instantly pick up on the passion he has for his job, as well as his dedication to Oxbow’s construction project. Thank you, Gary, for everything you are doing to ensure that our new golf course is the pride of every Oxbow member!
