WINTER CARNIVAL & CHERYL CAMERON BENEFIT Cheryl Cameron & her Fiancé Bob French lost their home to fire on December 2, 2018. Leaving them and their five children with out a home, all of their belongings were also a total loss. Just months before the tragic fire Bob had surgery by a specialist to remove a painful tumor from his spine, leaving Cheryl as the sole provider for their family during harvest. Now Cheryl and Bob are left trying to pick up the pieces from consecutive tragedies and desperately need support from the Oxbow Country Club community where Cheryl works as a bartender, and her son Blake works as a banquet server. GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE
Sedi Halvorson GENERAL MANAGER I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and a happy New Year! It was an extremely busy month here at your club, as we set records in both member dining revenue and event revenue for December! A huge thank you to all of our members for the great support you give your club in the winter months! We will look to keep the momentum rolling in January, with more great member events and dining experiences to help beat the winter blues. Sundays have quickly become one of the busiest days as your club with football, family events, Sunday brunch, and family style dinners. There is something for all of our members on Sundays, and we have been thrilled by the turnout! Please check your January – March membership guide (out soon) to see all that we have planned for you coming up on Sundays, and the other adult and family events throughout the rest of the winter months! As we dive headlong into 2019, our focus at the board and operational level will be growing membership. Our ability to keep growing our offerings and amenities to you depends on our membership continuing to grow. These past few years have been challenging with the golf course renovation continuing, with some even uncertain as to if the project would finish. Despite those challenges, we head in to 2019 with great optimism. We will open our fully renovated golf course in 2019, and our pool and clubhouse facilities cannot be matched. Our family programming throughout the year is second to none, as we have morphed from a golf club, to a family club.
PAGE 2
JANUARY 2019
What does that mean? It means that in addition to providing the best golf course and professional staff to our members, we also offer great culinary, aquatic, and social experiences to members of all ages and interests. We will also continue to grow our beginner, women’s, and junior golf programs. Most importantly, we have built a team over the past four years with tenure no other club in the area can match. In doing this, we continue to be able to KNOW you and your families, and to learn and anticipate your needs and wants. You can see this in the management team, as well as our many associates you see when you come to the club. On the next page is a list of our management team, along with what season 2019 will be for each at your club.

EVENT UPDATE
Hollie grande Catering event coordinator Engagement season has arrived! Did you know the most popular time to get engaged is between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day? With Christmas and New Year’s sandwiched between November and February, there are so many occasions that inspire a guy to buy a ring and get down on one knee. Here are some wedding trends to look for in 2019: Greenery! We saw lot of greens last year too, but it will be even bigger in 2019! Forgo the blooms and stick to the garlands and leafy accents. This can also be accomplished with succulents that come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Another popular green is eucalyptus, but be careful, it does have a strong smell. FX guest experience! This could be a special sound clip, or a video game to play during social hour. Some DJ’s have the ability to project fun things on the walls or floor to personalize your space. Perhaps you give a special someone a go-pro to wear for the night to get everyone’s reaction or special message for the bride & groom. Unplugged ceremonies. This one has been on the uptrend for the last couple years, since couples have started getting guests trying to get the perfect photo when the Bride is walking down the aisle blocking her view of her Groom. Enjoy the moment, and wait to capture all the shenanigans until the reception and then hashtag to your heart’s delight. Pantone has chosen Living Coral as the 2019 color of the year. Expect to find it popping up everywhere. You’ll find it toned down, paired with grey or earth tones, but the most popular pairing I’ve seen is bold blues like navy, royal, or deep teal.

EVENT UPDATE
Alison molony Director of membership & events NEW YEAR, NEW GROWTH—With the start of each new year brings the annual tradition of New Year’s Resolutions! In the past, my resolution list has been lengthy, ambitious, and admittedly, completely unrealistic. This year, instead, I have decide to ditch the resolution list and adopt one word to represent my focus for the year. (You might have seen some people doing this on social media.) For 2019, my word is GROW. So how, exactly, does this work? This simply means that I will focus my attention on ways to challenge myself and generally GROW as a person, both personally and professionally. One way I plan on GROWING in my professional development is through the United Way’s 35 Under 35 Women’s Leadership Program. I will be attending six training sessions in 2019 where I will learn from local leaders in the community, connect with bright young female professionals, and sharpen my own skills. It’s an incredible opportunity and I can’t wait to bring what I learn back to Oxbow! I know that several of our members have also been through the program—if you have any advice as I embark on this journey, please let me know!
JANUARY 2019
Another way I plan on GROWING is by pushing myself to enhance our member programming. Honestly, this is my goal every year; but in 2019, I really want to think outside the box and create unique member events that set Oxbow apart from other clubs. While writing this newsletter article, I looked back on our January newsletter article from 2015. We hosted three member events that January: Kids Night, the Bison Watch Party, and a Skating Party. That’s it! In 2019, we are hosting six member activities/events, PLUS a full Sunday Family Day schedule. It has been incredible to witness this transformation over the years! We have truly become a Club that offers YEAR-ROUND entertainment and value. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the management team and myself come up with in 2019! The final way my 2019 theme word comes into play is through another goal of mine: to GROW membership. 2019 is truly such an exciting, historic year for Oxbow. Once the new golf course is complete, our five-year construction project will come to an end and YOUR club will be the finest club in a 100 mile radius. We need your help spreading this message! I challenge you to also place your focus on the word GROW, and think of ways that you can help us gain members and introduce new people to the Oxbow family.

FOOD AND BEVERAGE
Scott motschenbacher EXECUTIVE CHEF Hello, Oxbow!! Here we are...another year has come and gone. The holidays are over and it’s a new year. This gives us all a chance to reflect on all the positives and the negatives from 2018. Myself and the rest of the management staff uses this slower time of year to fix our negatives, and figure out ways to capitalize on the positives. 2018 was a huge year for events. It seems since I started, they have snowballed quite a bit! It’s great to see everyone come and take advantage of what the club has to offer. 2019 is sure to be an even better year for everyone at the club.
JANUARY 2019
We have some fun new events coming this January. This month, I will be teaching a Mixology Class. Yes, I know, I am a Chef, not a Mixologist. But I did happen to win High Plains Reader’s best cocktail in 2014 and 2015 and took part in THREE bartender battles. Mixology, to me, is very much like cooking. It’s knowing and understanding flavors and how they work together. Along with the mixology portion, we will make some light appetizers. Hopefully this will be a chance for you to pick up some tips for your next gathering!! This month, I have changed up the menu again. It doesn’t take long to figure out what works and doesn’t work here at Oxbow. There will be some fun new shareable appetizers as well as additions to the pasta menu. I appreciate all the feedback I get from you and encourage it. I hope everyone had a great 2018!! I hope to see you around the club soon!!

FOOD AND BEVERAGE
Recipe (Cocktail) of the Month BY CHEF SCOTT
North Dakota Oil Tanker
For this month’s recipe, I want to share one of the cocktail recipes that got me the W for best cocktail in the High Plains Reader. It is a coffee drink that works really well as an after-dinner drink. I called it the North Dakota Oil Tanker. This was made right around the time we had that little accident with the train outside of Casselton.
INGREDIENTS 1 orange peeled 6 whole cloves 2 tablespoons of butter 3 tablespoons of brown sugar 1oz dark rum 1oz Grand Marnier 1oz bourbon 6oz fresh brewed coffee ½ teaspoon cinnamon ½ teaspoon nutmeg ½ teaspoon allspice
PROCEDURE
PAGE 8
JANARUY 2019
Peel your orange and stud the peels with the whole cloves. Place in a saucepan with the butter. Cook on medium heat for 3-5 minutes. Add your brown sugar and cook for another 2 minutes. Now, the next step can be a little risky if you don’t know what you are doing. Add your rum, Grand Marnier, and bourbon. When the alcohol hits the hot pan it will instantly release pure alcohol vapors. These are very combustible, hence the name of the drink. Now…. you can either embrace them by adding a flame or keep them away from any sort of igniter. Just keep your head back if you do light them on fire. This will result in quite the fun little ball of fire!! Now you want to add your spices. If at this point you DO have a flame, it will result in a fun little firework show. After you add the spices, pour in the coffee. Pour this into your favorite mug and enjoy!! Your night is sure to be “lit” with this cocktail!!

NEWS FROM THE FAIRWAY
DAVID WOOD SUPERINTENDENT Every off-season, it is only a matter of time before someone asks the question, “what do you do in the winter?” Our first priority is the maintenance and sharpening of mowing equipment, plus snow removal for the clubhouse. Most days we adjust our work schedule based on what the weather has done and/or the restaurant schedule. Many hours are also spent on the golf course accessories. Everything is cleaned up and painted as needed, plus ordering of new or replacement items. Hazard stakes, bunker rakes, and flag sticks are examples of some of the items that are repaired before the spring.
Pre-ordering many of our fertilizers, herbicides, and plant protectants is also done now. Most suppliers have winter programs that offer discounting, terms, and delivery if ordered this time of year. We have more time to assess our previous year’s performance of products and explore new options for what needs to be adjusted for the upcoming season. This time of year, we are also recertifying for licenses that are required and attending continuing educational seminars. We have opened the skating rink on the pond by the clubhouse. The lights will be working from 5 PM until 10 PM every evening. Please come out and enjoy some outside activities.
JANUARY 2019
Just a reminder, please do not drive golf carts, snowmobiles, or ATVs on the course during the winter. We have seen turf damage done in the past from the compacted snow freezing and turning to ice. If you see any activity on the golf course, let us know. See you on the course, David Wood

GOLF SHOP 1975
COREY HERLICKSON HEAD GOLF PROFESSIONAL January brings the anticipation for another season of golf. The Golf Shop team has plans and goals set for 2019. We are very excited to bring you new golf programs that will benefit all members of our club. We will outline these programs in our 2019 Membership Guide, as well as a golf guide that you can pick up in the golf shop starting February 1st.
Winter Golf Shop Hours THURSDAY
1 PM—6 PM 12 PM—5 PM
•
Read a book on the mental part of golf before the season starts. My suggestions are: Golf is Not a Game of Perfect by Dr. Bob Rotella and Zen Golf: Mastering the Mental Game by Dr. Joseph Parent.
•
Practice range –select one thing to work on specifically, such as the distance you carry your wedges. Hitting several clubs to the same distance, play the first nine holes of your next round as if you are on the course.
•
On course—make goals for every three hole group before you tee off. Example: Holes 1 – 3, try to play them in even par or whatever is a suitable goal for you. Be realistic. Holes 4-6, you may have to adjust to recover from Holes 1-3, or you may have a cushion if you played them better than planned. Continue playing all 18 Holes in this fashion.
Just as in business, your personal life, and your home life, goal setting is important each year. Do this for golf in 2019 and print your goals out so you can review them each time you go to the course. If you follow this simple guide, you will be set up for success. P A G E 16
JANUARY 2019
FRIDAY—SUNDAY
Have you set your golf goals for the upcoming season? Almost every golfer I have encountered has some sort of hope for improvement or more consistency. If you do not have a goal for the year, do not expect to see a lot of improvement. If you do not have a goal every time you play, you are simply going through the motions. If you do not have a goal while hitting balls on the range, you are simply working out. The goals you should set are not merely goals that you count via your shots, you should also have goals in regard to your mental approach to the game. Below are some examples of goals you can set for different parts of your game:
