We begin our new membership year with a net gain of 16 members. First year member retention was strong and our recruitment efforts surpassed budget goals. Member recruitment never ends though, so tell your friends, family, and co-workers it isn’t too late to join! A first year membership would run through July 2014 if someone joined today. I want to recognize and give a big thank you to our board of directors, committees, and club staff this month! The positive feedback from members and guests this season has been tremendous! These groups and individuals continue their work to improve every aspect of Oxbow Country Club for ALL members, their families and guests. We are extremely fortunate to have such a dedicated, hardworking group here at our club. It is reward-

What a great month for golf ! We had many different events going on and our members achieved some outstanding accomplishments in July. We started our month off with our 4th of July best ball. We want to thank all who played in it! Congratulations to Sam & Ryan Henke on winning the net division & Brian McClellan & Steve Lind took home the gross title. Remember every Monday, Tuesday, & Wednesday morning I’m out on the course with the kids for Junior Golf ! This is a great chance to get some pointers and have the kids play a little golf. So far we have seen great improvements in many of the children! Congratulations to our very own Bill Carlson for taking home two well known championships this month. Bill won the North Dakota State Match Play tournament and The Birchmont. These tournaments consist of the areas best players and are highly competitive. In addition to Bill’s victories, we crowned our new Derby champions, Mike Post & Jeff Restad. Congratulations on your win and for being the first in Oxbow history to have won our Derby twice. Tom & Jim Tallakson placed second with an impressive showing of their short game. Craig Stein & John Rice took a respective third place. Thank you to everyone who played and supported your club over Derby Weekend! Wednesday nights have become a popular night for the ladies! A large group of women have been coming out to enjoy a free clinic at 5 PM. Following the clinic we have reserved a block of tee times for the ladies. Each week there is an optional $10 game. We encourage all ladies to come out even if you are a beginning golfer or have golfed for years. There is a spot waiting for you! Some upcoming tournaments we have are the Oxbow Best Ball, August 3rd- 4th. It’s a great tournament and pays out well. The parent child tournament is on Sunday, August 11th. We also have our Annual Pro-Am at the end of August. Call the pro shop to make your tee times & sign up! We have gotten a variety of new items in the shop this past week. Come check out our new Dunning collection & GMAC clothes. For women, we have new Nike & Under Armor apparel. Also, if you have not received your shoes from the Battle At the Bow tournament please contact the pro shop (701-588-4669) or come in to pick up your shoes. Play Well, -JD
PGA Championship History In 1894, with 41 golf courses operating in the United States, two unofficial national championships for amateur golfers were organized. One was held at Newport Country Club in Rhode Island, and the other at St. Andrew's Golf Club in New York State. In addition, St. Andrew's conducted an Open championship for professional golfers at the same time as the amateur event. None of these championships were officially sanctioned by any governing body for American golf, and this caused considerable controversy among players and organizers. The controversy led to the formation of the United States Golf Association later in 1894; the USGA became the first formal golf organization in the country. After this, golf quickly became a sport of national popularity and importance. In February 1916 the Professional Golfers Association of America was established in New York City. One month earlier, the wealthy department store owner Rodman Wanamaker hosted a luncheon at the Wykagyl Country Club in nearby New Rochelle. This gathering of Wanamaker with the leading golf professionals of the day prepared the agenda for the formal organization of the PGA.[1] The new organization's first president was Robert White, one of Wykagyl's best-known golf professionals of the time. Golf historians have dubbed Wykagyl "The Cradle of the PGA".[2] The first PGA Championship was held in October 1916 at Siwanoy Country Club in Eastchester, New York.[3] The winner, Jim Barnes, received $500 and a diamond-studded gold medal donated by Rodman Wanamaker. The 2012 winner, Rory McIlroy, earned $1.445 million. The champion is also awarded a replica of the Wanamaker Trophy, which was also donated by Wanamaker, to keep for one year, and a smaller-sized keeper replica Wanamaker Trophy. Initially a match play event, it was originally played in early fall but varied from May to December. Following World War II, the championship was mostly played in late May or late June, then moved to early July in 1953 and a few weeks later in 1954, with the finals played on Tuesday. As a match play event (with a stroke play qualifier), it was not uncommon for the finalists to play over 200 holes in seven days. It was changed to stroke play in 1958, with the standard 72-hole format of 18 holes per day for four days, Thursday to Sunday. Network television broadcasters, preferring a large group of well-known contenders on the final day, pressured the PGA of America to make the format change.[4] During the 1960s, the PGA Championship was played the week following The Open Championship five times, making it virtually impossible for players to compete in both majors. In 1965, the PGA was contested for the first time in August, and that move was made permanent in 1969, save for a one-year move to late February in 1971, played in Florida. The PGA Championship is primarily played in the eastern half of the United States, only ten times has it ventured west. The last championship played in the Mountain Time Zone was in 1985 at Cherry Hills south of Denver and the last in the Pacific was 1998 at Sahalee east of Seattle; no western venues are currently

Superintendent David Wood I would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding during the practice facility grow-in. With the cool spring and several washout rains we have had some environmental challenges working against us. But the tee box responded nicely when the soil temperatures warmed and irrigation system began running properly. With about sixty days of growing weather the teeing area was mature enough to open for play. The putting green portion of this project has also opened. We will continue topdressing with sand to improve this new green until it matches our other greens. There are some rough surrounds and target greens that will require extra seeding the end of this month when temperatures cool and the tournament schedule slows down. This practice facility upgrade was funded by the Ken Toop Memorial Stag. The rainstorms that drenched us in June and the beginning of July have stopped and our staff has had more time to maintain and improve your golf course. We have dedicated many hours topdressing and vertical cutting the greens in an attempt to improve the speed and roll. Fairways are being mowed more at angles to improve the cut and aesthetics. Tee box and fairway divots are being filled more regularly. Dyed green sand for divots has been ordered and should be in use in about a week. The sand bunker behind the 2nd green was cleaned out and new drainage and sand installed. We will also be addressing several other greenside bunkers that have become too firm. Removing the top layer of contaminated sand will soften them up and also improve the drainage. Plus the fairway trap on hole eight is being renovated. See you on the course. David Wood
