Outside Functions Mean $100/month Less in Dues I recently listened to a presentation at our national club managers meeting about member communication. The speaker brought a sample of monthly newsletters from club managers all across the country; they all looked the same. Each would start with an update on weather since you can’t get that anywhere else, then it would provide a high-level snapshot of the most recent financial statement that doesn’t really show anything because there is no means of comparison, and it would conclude with reminders about minimums, events, blah, blah, blah. I realized my monthly newsletters sounded a lot like that.

This month, my first in a series of topics that I hope are more interesting and valuable to you, we look at why we host outside golf events DIR. OF MEMBER ENGAGEMENT & EVENTS and weddings; a topic that is often discussed, but I don’t think has ever been explained well. ALISON@OXBOWCC.COM; EXT. 12 Mondays and Tuesdays are generally our slowest days of the week. It is actually not uncommon for many private clubs to be closed on MonJAMES KERR days. On the Mondays and Tuesdays in 2013 in which we didn’t have an outside golf event we generated an average of $1,876.39/day in EXECUTIVE CHEF gross revenue; much of which was generated after 5 PM on Tuesdays CHEF@OXBOWCC.COM; EXT. 22 with league. In 2014 we are projecting $264,033 in revenue from outside golf functions.

In 2013 we hosted four weddings which generated about $44,250 in gross revenue. This year we have seen a 475% increase in bookings and project to generate $230,000 in revenue related to weddings. Although our margin on weddings is slightly less than on golf events, the disruption to amenities available to our members is almost none. The net impact to the bottom line allows us to keep dues down by about $100/month. In addition to the financial benefits, outside functions allow us to showcase our club to thousands of potential new members each year. They also help us retain the best staff in the business due to the gratuity they can earn. This year, we have increased our staff to be sure we can continue to provide a high level of personal service to our membership during these functions. As we design our new club house there will be opportunities to become more efficient and design an event space that is “out of sight, out of mind” for our membership. If there is ever anything we can do to serve you better, please don’t hesitate send me a note or stop by my office. I would love to hear from you. See you at your club, Joel 2

ALISON MOLONY Director of Member Engagement & Events As you page through this newsletter, you will probably notice the length is far greater in comparison to previous newsletters. This means that the season is finally upon us and the amount of events happening at your club will increase significantly in the coming weeks! Getting a handle on all the events and programs can be tricky--I know that it’s taken me a long time to become acquainted with everything! To help you better understand our events, I have put together a Membership Guide that will be distributed electronically in the next few weeks. This Membership Guide will also be found in print form around the Clubhouse or by request. Make sure you take time to peruse this new guide to ensure that you are up to speed on all the events happening this year. Of course, you are always welcome to contact me if you have any questions as well. We’re looking forward to a season filled with fun events for the whole family!

Chef James’

Spring has finally arrived. April was a great month--good to see everyone back at the club! Ladies’ Night Out and Easter Brunch were both a huge success. In April, we added two new team members to our culinary staff, Bryce Scovill and John Horn. Bryce comes to us with many years of culinary experience from the National Guard and John brings many years of experience from local restaurants. The culinary staff is geared up and ready to get into the swing of things this summer.

1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Grease and flour a 10 inch Bundt pan. In a large measuring cup dissolve baking soda in water, then add coffee, 1/2 cup of the coffee liqueur, and vanilla.

INGREDIENTS 3/4

Cup

Unsalted Butter/Softened

2

Cups

White Sugar

3/4

Cup

Unsweetened Cocoa Powder

4

Egg Yolks

1

Tsp

Baking Soda

2

Tbsp

Cold Water

1/4

Cup

Strong Brewed Coffee

1

Cup

Coffee-Flavored Liqueur

2

Tbsp

Vanilla Extract

1 1/3

Cups

All-Purpose Flower

4 1

Egg Whites Cup

Confectioners Sugar

2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the cocoa, then the egg yolks one at a time. Alternately beat in the flour and the coffee mixture just until incorporated. 3. In a large glass or metal mixing bowl, beat egg whites until stiff peaks form. Fold 1/3 of the whites into the batter, then quickly but carefully fold in remaining whites until no streaks remain. 4. Pour batter into a 10 inch Bundt pan. Bake in the preheated oven for 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Let cool for 10 minutes in the pan, then turn out onto a wire rack. Pierce warm cake all over with a fork and drizzle glaze a spoonful at a time over cake until it is absorbed. Wrap cake tightly with plastic wrap to preserve moisture. 5. To make the glaze: In a small bowl combine confectioner's sugar and remaining 1/2 cup of coffee liqueur.

Brittany’s

Hello! Hopefully all of these April showers bring some beautiful May flowers! May marks the start of our new summer menu. The House Committee met several times to offer suggestions and fine tune the menu selections. Be sure to come out and find your new favorite meal! See you soon!

Jacob Luna How long have you worked at Oxbow? Since January of 2014.

What’s your favorite part about working at Oxbow? It’s been fun working in a country club environment. I have enjoyed the new experience--everyone has been great to work with!

Sous Chef What do you do when you aren’t at work? I spend time at the gym and relaxing at home.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself! I grew up in Los Angeles and have spent time living Tacoma, Phoenix and San Diego.

David Wood Superintendent The grass is starting to wake up from a long winter and the trees are budding out; definitely a sign that spring has arrived. The course came through the winter better than expected for how cold it was. This month we will start pressurizing the irrigation system to prepare for the summer. The process of irrigation start-up normally takes two to three weeks to repair leaks, fix broken heads and find wiring faults. I am concerned with the possibility of above normal pipe breakage due to the depth of frost this winter. We are seeing large amounts of soil movement around the irrigation heads and drain lines; this can cause the pipes to break, or in some cases shear, at valve locations. Please be aware of our staff working around the course during these repairs. The new course design and grade work is being finalized on the north side golf holes. Our involvement with the Trent Jones group has been frequent this past month. As mentioned last month, we are concerned with keeping the two sides (north holes and new south holes) cohesive. This involves every aspect of the course from grass types, irrigation, drain patterns, water/sand hazards, etc. Another area that is being scrutinized is future maintenance costs. Choosing the correct grass types and proper sizing of course features are a few of many things that are being finalized before the project goes to bid. This spring I would like to remind everyone to repair ball marks and replace your divots. With the turf still brown it is challenging to see your ball marks on the greens, but as the putting surfaces turn green they will become more apparent. In regards to divots, please replace the turf before filling the hole with sand. With the cooler weather this time of year, the divot is faster to heal with the sod put back in place. Please pass this message along to your family and guests that play here and all golf courses. See you on the course. David Wood
