It is hard to believe it is already September, but I think some of the best golf is yet to come. Fall at Oxbow Country Club is my favorite time of the year. I hope you can find time for a few more rounds at your club amidst the kids being busy back in school and Bison football in full swing.

Fall is also the time where our management team begins to evaluate how we performed over the course of the season and plan for the next year. One of my favorite ways to benchmark our performance and gather new ideas to improve our member experience is by visiting other country clubs. This past year, I was fortunate enough to be able to spend time at eight other private clubs across the country. From Augusta National Golf Club to our friendly competition to the North, there is always something I can take back to our team here. Sometimes it is an idea for a new event; this month’s “Farm to Fairway” dinner was an idea I got from Interlachen Country Club in Edina, MN. Our newsletter format is based on a template from Town and Country Club in St. Paul, MN. I also take lots of pictures; pictures of the bar and restaurant, outdoor dining areas, locker room features, pro shop displays, and more. I will finally get to do something with all of these pictures as we begin to design our new clubhouse in the coming months. You all together visit many more clubs than I do though and I’d like to ask for your help: Next time you visit a club and see something unique, something you like, or something that stands out; tell me about it. Snap a picture, take a copy of their newsletter, or just send me a quick email. These ideas, as well as your feedback, are always welcome and appreciated. Your team at Oxbow is dedicated to building the best country club we can and maintaining the highest levels of service. If there ever is anything we can do to make your club experience more enjoyable, please don’t hesitate to contact me anytime.

In closing, I have a few housekeeping items to touch on:  Reminder; the maximum number of golfers allowed in a group is five. CONTROLLER ACCOUNTING@OXBOWCC.COM; EXT. 10  Please repair your ball marks and fix your divots.  Keep carts 30 feet from all greens and tees.

DAVID WOOD SUPERINTENDENT DAVIDW@OXBOWCC.COM

These three topics have brought about a lot of discussion amongst our membership in recent weeks. These policies and standard etiquettes will ensure we continue to provide our membership with a high quality golf course and enjoyable club experience. Please be respectful of your fellow members and follow these rules. See you at your club, Joel

ALISON MOLONY Director of Member Engagement & Events As you can see, the white wedding tent has made its exit for the 2014 season. In the months of June through August, the tent hosted wedding celebrations for seven happy brides & grooms. One of the happy couples was none other than the Mayor and his new First Lady! Congratulations to Jim & Jenaah Nyhof--their wedding was absolutely beautiful. It was an honor to host their special day! As summer winds down and school starts up again, you may think that wedding season over. It sure doesn’t feel like it to me--we have a wedding scheduled every weekend at Oxbow through October 18th! In fact, nationally, September and October trail right behind June as the most popular month to marry. (Fall weddings are my personal favorite...though I may be partial since my anniversary date is November 5th!) Fall happens to be my favorite time of year: bring on the football, pumpkin spice lattes, and changing leaves! As the weather gets colder, we still have an awesome variety of events happening at your club. Mark your calendar for our fantastic September events! Friday, September 5th

It appears that fall is upon us already, and summer is coming to an end. The culinary staff and I would like to thank everyone for making the last pool party of the year a huge success; we had a lot of fun with it. Saturdays during the Bison games, I’ll be running a new special every week. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please feel free to send them to me: chef@oxbowcc.com. It’s been a busy summer! It’s time to slow down a bit and get focused on giving you a great fall/winter menu. I have some great ideas in mind and will be running them periodically as specials to test the water. Feedback is always welcomed. This month’s recipe is one of my favorites and with the holiday season approaching, I felt it appropriate. This is actually my grandmother’s cranberry relish recipe. I remember many a Thanksgivings looking forward to this.

David Wood Superintendent Our seasonal staff has returned to school for the fall. Our maintenance practices will be adjusted to staffing levels. Walk mowing of the greens is done for the year and mowing all 18 fairways is only completed on Thursdays. Sand bunker maintenance and trim mowing are now scaled back to several times a week. Fall aerification has been completed for greens. Again this year, we have used a deep tine aerator for the greens. This type of aeration penetrates the root zone approximately 10 inches. Sand is spread onto the green surfaces and worked into the holes. Aerating and sanding promotes deeper plant rooting and improves water and air movement through the soil. The surfaces will be healed in about a week from all the disruption. For the tees boxes, a hollow core aerator tines will be used to aerate. This type of aeration removes a 3 inch core of soil/thatch and turf. The main purpose of this type of aerator is thatch management. This process will take about two days for tees with minimal disruption to play. Progress continues on the new golf course earth work and construction plans. The initial work has been rough shaping and pond excavation. This portion is nearing completion as I write this. Five golf course contractors have been invited to bid the finish construction portion of the project. All five companies come highly recommended and have done extensive work on golf projects this size. Our goal is to have the bid awarded and construction to begin in September. See you on the course. David Wood

JOHN DAHL HEAD GOLF PRO August was a very busy month at the Oxbow Country Club. As always, the month was kicked off with the popular Oxbow Best Ball on August 2nd and 3rd. Bill Carlson and Russ Newman used their home course advantage to seal the victory! Up next we had the Parent-Child Golf Tournament on August 17th. It was a great day for all and a perfect day for parent-child bonding. Tammy and Tori Worner won the 10 and under division. Chad and Max McQuillan won the 11 and 12-year-old division, and Steve and Zach Kluvers won the 12 and over division. Next in line was the El Zagal Charity Pro-Am on August 20th. We would like to thank Leo Worner and S&L Computer Services, Inc. for being a generous sponsor. We would also like to thank everyone who participated in supporting the Shriners Hospitals for Children and El Zagal Patient Transportation Fund. Congratulations to Josh Esler who shot a blazing 64 to take first-place honors and a check for $1,800! On Sunday, August 24th, Mike Podolak came back from a 6 stroke deficit to edge out Perry Piatz and take home the Club Championship. In the Junior Club Championship, Bryce Bye claimed victory by narrowly defeating Jack Olson. In September, we have some exciting events! On September 10th, we will be hosting the Ladies’ Invitational. September 12th is the Couple’s Glow Ball Tournament--get out your flashlights and glow sticks and come join the fun! To end the month on September 27th, we will be having the 4-Person Hot Ball Tournament. Call the Pro Shop to sign up. Hope to see everyone out on the golf course! Fall is great time for golf. Remember to get ready for the fall with our great selection of Dunning and Mizuno clothing and Sun Mountain and Antigua fleece for women. We would like to give a “BIG THANK YOU” to all of our members who have provided tees for the club this summer. Joe Talley, Greg Melhus, Jim Pearson, Frank Pearson, DJ Rieger, Ralph Botnen, Paul Nelson, and Clint Nelson provided UND tees. Mike and Renee Gravalin chipped in with Gary’s Optical tees, and Scott Bleth contributed Byte Speed tees. It is very much appreciated! Happy Golfing everyone! John Dahl ***Reminder – Please remember to fix your ball marks and fill in divots on your golf course!
