WHAT’S ON GUIDE AUTUMN 2021
July 2021 to January 2022
Welcome Welcome to Oxford Playhouse’s Autumn season, which we’re thrilled to present to you. Over the last 18 months we have continued to tell stories in all kinds of new ways – online, on zoom, even on the phone! – but nothing quite compares to the atmosphere, buzz and excitement of live performance. The Playhouse has been overwhelmed and humbled by the support of our audiences, patrons, donors and funders. We are now delighted to welcome you back with a season of remarkable drama, dance and comedy. In August, the Queens are back! Never have we needed the SIX wives of Henry VIII more to get to the mic and get the party started with their remix of 500-year-old historical heartbreak. Next up is Agatha Christie’s gripping murder mystery And Then There Were None, based on the best-selling crime novel of all time. There is also plenty to keep young families entertained with everyone’s favourites Peppa Pig (and her brother George!) and Stick Man.

Dance fans can look forward to Matthew Bourne’s latest work The Midnight Bell, thrilling new dance talent from Rambert2 (Look out for details of Rambert’s livestream performance too) and new work from choreographer Alexander Whitley. If it is laughs you crave, we have plenty! Live on stage we have Groan Ups, from the company responsible for the smash-hit The Play That Goes Wrong, big name comedians including Andy Hamilton, Sindhu Vee and Rachel Parris, and musical comedy-divas Fascinating Aïda. Online, the team behind the hugely successful The Picture of Dorian Gray will bring new comedy Going the Distance; and Fehinti Balogun goes on a journey into the world of environmental activism in Can I Live?, a co-production between OP and the ground-breaking theatre company Complicité.

The Burton Taylor Studio is once again packed with the very best in student drama, experimental new work and productions from developing artists. A trip to the BT is always an adventure! Alongside our productions, an extended Creative Learning programme will continue throughout the autumn. Lockdown saw us forge new partnerships with organisations including Age UK and KEEN Oxford, helping to tell stories from every sector of our community. New voices for a new age.
And finally! We’re delighted that normal service has resumed, and we can once again celebrate the festive season with a traditional Oxford Playhouse pantomime. Watch out for Robin Hood and his Merry Band, as they swagger into Oxford to bring the joy of panto and some much-needed cheer for all, young and old. All of us here at the Playhouse look forward to welcoming you back. Thank you for making sure the shows go on!

SIX
The Queens are back in Oxford by popular demand! Multi award-winning, with a spectacularly successful soundtrack storming charts across the globe, this sell-out Tudor take-off has “an incredibly strong and powerful message. From Tudor Queens to Pop Princesses, the six wives of Henry VIII take to the mic to tell their tales, remixing five hundred years of historical heartbreak into an 80-minute celebration of 21st century girl power. These Queens may have green sleeves but their lipstick is rebellious red. Think you know the rhyme, think again... Divorced. Beheaded. LIVE!

IN THE SEA THERE ARE CROCODILES The unforgettable story of a child’s five-year journey in search of a safe place to live. At the age of ten, Enaiat Akbari’s Afghan village fell prey to the Taliban. Fearing for his life, Enaiat’s mother led him across the border where she left him, alone, to fend for himself. So began Enaiat’s five-year ordeal: traversing bitterly cold mountains, near-suffocating in the base of a truck and steering an inflatable raft in violent seas. He crossed Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, and Greece - discovering brotherhood, witnessing death, and developing an eye for the comic - before arriving in Italy, aged fifteen. In the Sea There Are Crocodiles is one child’s epic tale of hope and survival. As unaccompanied children around the world continue to seek refuge, it is a tale that is relived by them, every single day. This company was specially formed to share this incredible story and raise money for Young Roots, a charity providing support to child refugees & asylum seekers arriving in the UK. Producer, Mary Loudon, is the prize-winning author of five internationally-published books of fiction & non-fiction. Director, Nicola Moran, has written, adapted and directed numerous plays including Kindertransport and Jane Eyre.

New Adventures
MATTHEW BOURNE’S THE MIDNIGHT BELL Intoxicated tales from darkest Soho. Matthew Bourne’s new World Premiere for New Adventures explores the under-belly of 1930s London life where ordinary people emerge from cheap boarding houses nightly to pour out their passions, hopes and dreams in the pubs and bars of fog-bound Soho and Fitzrovia. Step inside The Midnight Bell, a tavern where one particular lonely-hearts club gathers to play out their lovelorn affairs of the heart; bitter comedies of longing, frustration, betrayal and redemption. Inspired by the great English novelist Patrick Hamilton (Twenty Thousand Streets Under The Sky, Hangover Square) who created some of the most authentic fiction of his era; stories borne out of years of social interactions with the working man and woman at his favourite location - the London Pub. Master storyteller Matthew Bourne once again joins forces with the Olivier and Tony award-winning team of Terry Davies, Lez Brotherston, Paule Constable and Paul Groothuis for this brand new production. The cast features twelve of New Adventures’ finest performers in roles that will challenge and reveal the darker reaches of the human heart.

Theatres across the country go dark. Hundreds of cherished arts centres face the prospect of permanent closure. But that isn’t going to stop the Eggborough Community Theatre... As they fight to save their local venue with the genius idea to put on a fundraising production of ‘Wizard’* (*inspired by but for rights purposes certainly not based on - ‘The Wizard of Oz’). The Egg, Wales Millennium Centre and Oxford Playhouse’s co-production of Holm Theatre’s
JOSEPHINE Josephine Baker. The little girl from Missouri who became a 20th Century icon. Dancer, actor, activist, campaigner, spy and mother to the multicultural Rainbow Tribe, Josephine broke the mould and high-kicked the pieces to the kerb. Almost 50 years after her death, Café Josephine, a downat-heel New York diner dedicated to her memory, faces closure. Nobody remembers Josephine, who she was, what she did, what she stood for. Was it the menu? The décor? Or Jack and Marie, siblings and co-owners of the café, who have run her legacy into the ground? Either way, Josephine just can’t allow that. With a sultry, Harlem Renaissance-inspired score, springheeled Charleston dancing and a hatful of historical figures, Josephine blurs the real with the imagined as we follow one woman’s incredible journey from the slums of St Louis via the bright lights of Paris and into the hearts of the world.

WATER LILY: PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION by Keiko Ikeuchi
Fri 15 Oct to Mon 15 Nov Mon, Tue & Wed 5pm to 6pm Thu, Fri & Sat 3.30pm to 5.30pm Venue The Lucy Room, OP Tickets Free
Water Lily is a photographic series by Oxford-based photographer Keiko Ikeuchi featuring Kazuo Ohno (1906-2010) who was a celebrated pioneer of Butoh, an avant-garde form of dance theatre which is often described as the ‘Dance of Darkness’. This series was photographed in the 1990s when Kazuo Ohno was in his late 80s. He is dressed as a maiden in a set that appears to represent a kind of purgatory. Keiko captures the dancer’s physical expressions and gentle movements as they contrast in unexpected ways with his striking appearance. Keiko Ikeuchi was born and raised in Japan and moved to England to study Visual Communication. Her early fascination with the body as a subject for photography developed to include the capture of human movement and portraiture. She is a recipient of the Patrick Litchfield Award from the BIPP (British Institute of Professional Photography) and is a past winner of the Professional Photographer Magazine Portrait Competition. The exhibition consists of 15 black and white silver gelatine prints on fibre-based papers and is part of the Photo Oxford Festival Women and Photography: Ways of Seeing and Being Seen’. www.photooxford.org

ARTIST DEVELOPMENT
Oxford Playhouse is committed to discovering, nurturing and promoting the best emerging talent from Oxfordshire and beyond. Artists are at heart of everything we do at the Playhouse, and we strive to do as much as we can to help Artists to emerge from this challenging time. There are a number of ways to get involved in our Playhouse Artists Programme:
OPEN SESSIONS 1:1 Advice Sessions OP offers 1:1 Advice Sessions tailored to individual needs for Oxfordshire based artists, led by a member of our team.
The Green Room OP’s virtual gathering for artists and venues, providing space for the vital conversations of the moment.
Skills Sessions Evolve your practice and share learning through OP’s regular skills session for artists.
ARTIST DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS Evolve OP’s annual Evolve Artists in Residence scheme supports three to four emerging/ mid-career artists/companies by providing seed funding for projects, research and development, rehearsal space and mentoring.
Playhouse Playmaker Up to six writers are invited to be a part of OP's annual writers’ attachment programme, led by award-winning playwright, Clare Bayley.
The Plot Hosted by OP, The Plot is a group of later-career playwrights, which has met informally since 2015 to develop its own voices and practice, and to support each other in an exchange of culture and community.
Visit www.oxfordplayhouse.com for further information and to sign up to OP’s regular Artists’ newsletter and to see how you can get involved.
