Welcome One of the many pleasures of writing these introductions to our thrice-yearly season brochures is recognising the vast array of different audiences we enjoy hosting at the Playhouse. We aim to make the programme as diverse and broad as the city we serve, both on our stages and in the extensive programme of participation projects we deliver year-round. I hope you agree that Autumn 2019 demonstrates that range pretty well. From spectacular Australian circus company Circa to Emma Rice’s spiffing Malory Towers world-premiere adaptation; enduring classics like An Inspector Calls and Two Trains Running to new classics like the National Theatre’s Barber Shop Chronicles and the genre-defying phenomenon that is the glorious feminist rock musical SIX. There’s also comedy, music and lots of family work including our own sensational pantomime (an entirely traditional dish served with 21st-century relish and a smile every year!). We want to entice everyone to experience the theatre and good stories, not just our hugely valued regular visitors who already have the ‘theatre habit’. We remain, of course, a Playhouse most of all - somewhere to see the very best drama, wonderful writing, great acting and beautiful design. As a so-called ‘receiving house’, we are largely dependent on the choices made by tour producers. That’s why we have launched a scheme to support our own in-house productions as part of our 80th anniversary celebrations, to take control of both the choice and quality of plays, enriching not just our own programme but raising the bar nationally, taking those shows on tour ourselves. This investment scheme (run through a subsidiary commercial company) will share the risks of producing between the charity that runs the theatre (the Oxford Playhouse Trust) and a small number of investors who will share not just the profits and losses (almost certainly small in both cases!) but the larger rewards of being part of the process making first-class dramas such as, most recently, The Remains of the Day, Richard III and Wise Children. Do get in touch if you’d like to know more: Louise.chantal@oxfordplayhouse.com Here’s to a sizzling Summer and sunny Autumn, both on and off our stages!

STONES IN HIS POCKETS By Marie Jones Directed by Lindsay Posner A small village in rural Ireland is turned upside down when a major Hollywood film studio descends to make a historical blockbuster on location. As cultures clash, it becomes clear that Tinseltown’s romanticised dream of Ireland is a long, long way from reality. Hysterically funny, thought-provoking and witty, this wonderful comedy has won numerous awards including both the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best New Comedy, as well as three Tony nominations on Broadway. Stones in his Pockets ran for four years in the West End and has delighted audiences around the world ever since.

LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE The road to happiness is a bumpy ride. Based on the Oscar-winning comedy, Little Miss Sunshine is a new musical comedy from Tony Award-winners James Lapine (Into the Woods, Sunday in the Park with George) and William Finn (Falsettos, 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee). Circa
HUMANS Created by Yaron Lifschitz and the Circa Ensemble Ten acrobats take us on a stirring journey of what it means to be human, and of how our bodies, our connections, and our aspirations all form part of who we are. Exploring the physical limits of their bodies as they are pushed to the extreme, they question how much we can take as humans. How much weight can we carry? Who can we trust to support our load? They lead us to reflect on our lives, our loved ones, the burdens we carry and the physical and emotional strength it takes to overcome them. With incredible strength and integrity they connect each moment seamlessly with the next in a thrilling and heartstopping performance. Glimpse their humanity as they find redemptive power in strength and celebrate what it means to be fiercely human. Not to be missed!

TWO TRAINS RUNNING American Theatre Critics Association Best New Play, 1991 Tony Award nomination Best New Play, 1992 Pulitzer Prize for Drama Finalist, 1992 There’s a controversial new president in the White House, and racial tensions are on the rise. It is Pittsburgh, 1969, and the regulars of Memphis Lee’s restaurant are struggling to cope with the turbulence of a rapidly changing world. The diner is under threat of being torn down, a casualty of the city’s renovation project that is sweeping away the buildings of a community, but not its spirit. The iconic American playwright August Wilson (Fences, The Pittsburgh Cycle) paints a vivid portrait of everyday lives in this defining moment of American history. When Two Trains Running opened on Broadway in 1992, its legendary premiere won Tony and Drama Desk Awards. Directed by the 2018 winner of the RTST Sir Peter Hall Director Award, Nancy Medina, this major revival will introduce this Pulitzer Prize shortlisted modern classic to UK-wide audiences for the first time.

ONLY EXPANSION By Duncan Speakman Experience an utterly unique audio-walk through Oxford. As sea levels rise and wildfires burn, Only Expansion remixes the sound of Oxford so you can experience sonically how your own life might change in the future. A beautifully made guidebook prompts you to explore the city, choosing your own route, while headphones with customised electronics capture and manipulate the sounds around you. Voices of passers-by become a choir, bus brakes create pulsating rhythms, these might then be blended with desert winds from Tunisia or the crumbling coasts of Norfolk. A visceral and poetic reflection on what it means to live on a planet in crisis, Only Expansion connects the here to the elsewhere, letting you experience our tangled ecology through sound.
Only Expansion was commissioned by University of Exeter Arts And Culture and developed with support from Pervasive Media Studio, Watershed Bristol, Theatre in The Mill Bradford, Lydgalleriet Bergen, and Arts Council National Lottery Project Grants.

BALLET BLACK Now in their 18th year, Ballet Black returns to the Playhouse by popular demand with a new triple bill featuring two premieres. Led by Artistic Director Cassa Pancho, recent recipient of the Freedom of the City of London for her contribution to diversity in ballet, Ballet Black celebrates dancers of black and Asian descent. Ingoma (meaning song), is created by Mthuthuzeli November and is a fusion of ballet, African dance and singing. This ballet portrays a milestone moment in South African history and imagines the struggles of black miners and their families in 1946, when 60,000 of them took courageous strike action. Pendulum is Martin Lawrance’s “wickedly intelligent” (The Guardian) and intimate duet made for the company in 2009. The programme is completed with CLICK!; an original, up-beat piece by Scottish Ballet’s choreographer-inresidence, Sophie Laplane.

University of Oxford Student Company: R J Production presents
SPRING AWAKENING “There is a part I can’t tell... about the dark I know well.” Oxford University students bring Broadway’s eight-time Tony Award-winning hit musical Spring Awakening to life this autumn. Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik’s provocative reimagining of Frank Wedekind’s 1891 play combines an alt-rock score with a narrative fuelled by sexuality, morality and rebellion. In a desperate bid to understand the adult world, teenagers Wendla, Moritz and Melchior surpass their naivety in order to discover the truth about their own desires. Despite its 19th century setting, the overwhelmingly contemporary feel of Spring Awakening gives a cathartic sense of control back to the disenfranchised youth.

AN OXFORD PLAYHOUSE PANTOMIME Friday 29 November 2019 to Sunday 12 January 2020
Written and directed by Steve Marmion
Beautiful beasts and where to find them... Meet Beauty – smart as a whip, bold as brass, with a heart of pure gold. She’s the opposite of the Beast – gruff, rough and in need of a shave. But when Beauty finds herself trapped in a magical castle with the Beast, the two of them have to learn to get along. Will they meet a beastly end? Or have a beautiful ‘happily ever after’? One thing’s for sure, our mismatched pair will need a hand from you to make their dreams come true. Full of super singing, dazzling dancing and lashings of slapstick silliness, this year’s panto is brought to you by the team behind Dick Whittington and His Cat and Jack and the Beanstalk. So get ready to boo and cheer – another smashing panto is here!
For everyone aged 5 to 105!

ALONE IN BERLIN By Hans Fallada Adapted by Alistair Beaton Directed by James Dacre Based on Hans Fallada's bestselling novel about true events in wartime Germany, Alone in Berlin is an enthralling portrait of a society gripped by the fear of a night-time knock on the door. This timely story follows Otto and Anna as they negotiate the insidious effects of absolute power on every aspect of daily life. When they decide to make a stand in their own unique way they find themselves players in a deadly game of cat and mouse with the Gestapo – a game that will eventually lead them down through ever-narrowing circles of totalitarian hell. Described as “the greatest book ever written about German resistance to the Nazis” by Primo Levi, this Oxford Playhouse co-production will be the first time Fallada’s masterpiece has been seen on a British stage.

Together we will explore the seven basic plots and use music, movement, storytelling and drama skills to create a new adaptation of a classic tale. "A big thank you for an inspiring week. My children thoroughly enjoyed themselves, as was visible from the fun and creative performance!" Parent

Did you know...? • We have free Sennheiser hearing loops and infa-red systems for any audience members who would benefit from amplified sound. They work for people with and without hearing aids, ask at the Ticket Office. • If you are blind or partially sighted we offer regular Audio-Described performances and accompanying Touch Tours. • We hold regular Relaxed performances where the house lights remain on and the atmosphere in the auditorium is more relaxed. Each performance has an accompanying visual story for the show which is available in advance. This year we are holding our first ever Relaxed schools performance for Beauty and the Beast.
