Why We Love Feet
The feet are one of the most highly fetishised body parts. We see this time and time again with how much effort kinksters put into their footwear. Known as ‘podophilia’ there’s research suggesting close to 50% of people who fetishize a body part, fetishize the feet - quite incredible when you consider how small a percentage of the body they constitute. But for the small space they take up, our feet do a tremendous job. An average day of walking can equate to hundreds of tonnes of force on the feet – yep. TONNES! Our feet contain a quarter of the bones in our body, and contain more nerve endings and sweat glands per square centimetre than any other part of the body. They are incredibly sensitive and hard-working body parts, so it’s no wonder so many of us want to pay them some extra attention. And if feet weren’t worshipped enough, objects associated with the feet – footwear, pedicures, hosiery – have an even higher rate of fetishisation with stats suggesting around 65% of fetishists desire podophilic objects. Being one of the most common fetishes, podophilia has been relatively easy for both psychologists and neurologists to study. There’s a tendency for psychologists believe that all our strong passions and desires have their roots in childhood, and the wiring is established early. There’s a belief that, as small children, we focus on the feet, both our own and others. Prior to walking, much of our focus is on controlling our feet and observing how others utilise theirs. Simultaneously we are also learning how to connect with others and have our needs met on some very basic (and vital levels). In this way we make a deep connection between our feet and our needs. Neurologists also speak of a connection to reason why so many people fetishise the feet. Studies have noted that within the brain’s body map, the genitals and the
feet are adjacent to each other. Neurologists suggest that cross wiring in this area connects the genitals and the feet resulting in the podophilic fetish. As much as the ‘why’ might be fascinating, we may never have a definitive answer – just more theories. All our kinks are complex, and the reasons for partaking are more than likely different for everyone, despite how common they may be. But when it comes to our feet we can probably agree they deserve some love – even if it’s just a snuggly pair of slippers.
