June 17-27, 2021 | Council Bluffs CHANTIC;LEER CHILDREN’S THEATER
Letter From the Director Fiddler on the Roof opened at the Imperial Theatre in NY on September 22, 1964. It closed eight years later after 3,242 performances. It was revived four times. The author-approved Broadway Junior version premiered in 1997 at the Enrico Fermi School for the performing Arts in Younkers , NY. Fiddler on the Roof is one of the most popular musicals ever produced. It tells a wonderful story through beautiful songs and intriguing characters. The overriding theme of the show is the erosion of tradition and how the leading character, Tevya, works to keep traditions even as the world seems to be crashing down around him. Tradition has also been important to the Chanticleer Children’s Theater for the past 10 years. Every year we strive to present a production that showcases the talents, dedication, and work ethic of students ages 8-18. They never cease to amaze me. They come to rehearsals ready to work and perfect their skills. I love working with each and everyone of them. To see their growth from their first rehearsal to opening night is a wonderful thing to witness. This production would not be possible without the help of many people. A huge thanks to Beth Rutz, Jason DeLong , Jerry Gray and Bob Putman. The four of them not only take care of their separate tasks but are there to help with anything I ask of them. Much appreciation to the entire behind the scenes crew listed in the program. Special thanks to the PACE staff for their help in making this production possible. To all the parents I thank you for getting your kids to rehearsals and encouraging them to take part in the arts. Last but certainly not least a huge thanks to all the kiddos. You are the reason I come back every year. I can not imagine my life without having the opportunity to work with all of you. My wish for all of you is to live and love the arts and make wonderful memories along the way. Denise Putman, Director

Synopsis This special adaptation of the nine-time Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, Fiddler on the Roof JR. follows Tevye the milkman as he tries to protect his daughters and his way of life from a changing world. Created by Broadway legends Jerome Robbins, Harold Prince, Jerry Bock, Sheldon Harnick and Joseph Stein, Fiddler on the Roof JR. tackles the universal theme of tradition in ways that reach across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion. Set in the little village of Anatevka, the story centers on Tevye, a poor dairyman, and his five daughters. With the help of a colorful and tight-knit Jewish community, Tevye tries to marry off his daughters and instill in them a sense of tradition in the face of growing anti-Semitism in Czarist Russia. Fiddler on the Roof JR. is a great introduction to the world of musical theatre. Young performers will love its humor, warmth and honesty. Directors will love the opportunity to direct a large cast with a good balance of male and female roles.
