The 39 Steps

By Patrick Barlow, John Buchan May 13 – 22, 2022 Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Monty Python and you have The 39 Steps, a fast-paced whodunit for anyone who loves the magic of theatre! This two-time Tony and Drama Desk Award-winning treat is packed with nonstop laughs, a zillion zany characters (played by a ridiculously talented cast of four), an onstage plane crash, handcuffs, missing fingers, and some good oldfashioned romance.

The videotaping or other video or audio recording of this production is strictly prohibited. “The 39 Steps” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc. www.concordtheatricals.com

director’s note Could I use a laugh? Yes. I really could use a laugh. The world has been a heavy place the past couple years - even the past couple of months. What’s been the most difficult thing to do? Laugh. Find a place to laugh. Find anything funny. So, when The 39 Steps came up, I was really ready for a laugh. And did I get one! Certainly, this isn’t exactly the 1935 film imagined by Alfred Hitchcock, though it’s still there, just mixed in with some outstanding comedy. When the talented quartet you’re about to witness started working together at rehearsals, there was so much laughter. In fact, I can’t tell you how many hilarious moments have happened to me in my years as a director, but this group with this script... We have laughed so much together over these past weeks. I’d like to thank this amazing cast, and our fabulous crew - Dan and Brian bringing their deep expertise to the booth, and my four amazing crew members who are handling the madness backstage, JoAnn (our fearless stage manager), Melissa, Cindy, Brodie and Quinn. They are not only assisting with set changes, but costume changes, prop changes, curtains, and some very fun special effects. It’s such a big job and we couldn’t do without them. I’d also like to thank my creative friends, Taylor, Jacy, Madeline and Dwayne and his staff, who all shared in the vision for this production. And of course, thank you to Chanticleer for this opportunity for us all to gather again. I had forgotten how healing laughter can be. I’m so grateful for all the laughs we’ve shared, the ones we’ll share with this performance, and that theatre is cautiously returning to the stage. Enjoy!

We are excited to partner with Americans for the Arts to announce the launch of Arts & Economic Prosperity 6 (AEP6), the sixth national study of the economic impact of the nonprofit arts and culture industry. While the arts have the potential to impact many aspects of our community, the truth is they also have a power all on their own. The arts are an open invitation to engage in our history, our heritage, our politics, the way we learn—in short, the arts are part of our daily lives, and play a role in all aspects of the human experience. We need your help to collect this data for AEP6. While part of a national study, our reports will be based on spending by our own local nonprofit arts and culture organizations as well as the eventrelated spending by their audiences (at local retail, parking, and restaurant establishments). We believe this important research tool will demonstrate that when we invest our dollars in the arts, we are not doing so at the expense of economic development. Rather, we are investing in an industry that strengthens our local economy. Let’s change the conversation. The arts mean business. Scan the Code or visit website to Learn More: AmericansForTheArts.org/AEP6
