Get more hair perfection with Sullivan’s new Teflon Combs. Teflon is a solid polymer that is considered to be one of the world’s most slippery and water resistant substances. It has one of the lowest measured coefficients of friction of any compound. For our application, it creates a baked-on surface to the comb teeth for reduced friction and a non-stick lubricant that allows the comb to glide through the hair easier, especially with a sticky substance like adhesives. Although not full-proof, especially since adhesive is still a very sticky substance, you will however be glad to see a 40 to 50% improvement of less matting, less hair drag, less static and less stick to the comb when fitting a leg. It is definitely easier to clean adhesives from the comb and saves time while fitting. Available as Sullivan Combs, Fluffer Combs, and Double-Stuff Comb.

from the
editor Can you believe it is already November? Where do the days go to? It seems we all get busier each year. Whether it’s more responsibility at work, more to do at home, running kids to school and activities, or whatever you are doing – there are never enough hours in a day to get everything done. For me, I need to make lots of notes. I write everything down. I have found this is the only way I can stay on track with everything I am working on. It is a good habit to get into – and you are never too young to start!

Fall is always an exciting time for animal projects! The anticipation and excitement over viewing, selecting, and then purchasing your chosen prospects at a sale, on a ranch, or even over the internet – what a feeling! Nothing like a good sale to get your adrenalin going, and get you pumped up and motivated to have a new project! Grand ideas of purple ribbons dance through your head. You can see yourself in the winners circle at your fair with everyone clapping, mom taking pictures, dad grinning from ear to ear, and little brother or sister fighting over who gets to hold your ribbon first. Wonderful thoughts indeed – but first, there is work to be done!

Make the most of the first weeks with your new animals. They are small and easily trained at this point. Work with them now so they are easier to handle as time goes on and they get bigger. Line out your show season so you are prepared ahead of time for the shows you want to attend. This helps you to have your project ready each time you head out down the road. Check out the equipment you have, and determine what you will need to buy. Maybe there is something you would love to have, and a word to Santa sure can’t hurt! Things for your projects make great Christmas presents ! (hint-hint!)

If you are a seasoned showman, have been showing for awhile, or have stepped up your skills and knowledge, this next year will be a great time to give back. When I say “give back”, I mean passing on what you have learned to new or younger exhibitors. You looked up to older kids when you first started out. You saw what they did, tried it out on your animals, you asked questions and accepted advice. All those experiences helped you become the showman you are today. Now there is a whole new set of little kids starting out who are watching to see what you do! Take some time to show them what to do or talk to them about what you have learned. This is a New Year’s resolution that you can keep! “Giving back” brings great personal rewards right back to you. With this in mind, I would love to hear what you have done to “give back”.

With the end of 2012 in sight, the CJLA is busy planning for the annual award banquet. The 2012 year-end banquet is scheduled for February 16, 2013 in Paso Robles during Western Bonanza weekend. We are doing several fund-raisers now, and we also need sponsor help, so we can provide the many awards to the CJLA kids who have worked so hard on their projects throughout this year. We know that everyone gets asked for donations for so many activities, but we hope you will all consider the CJLA in your donation plans. This is the premier organization for kids who raise and show livestock and we want to recognize each and every one for their achievements. Please check out the CJLA website (www. cjlainfo.com). You can find sponsor forms and information there – or you can call us anytime and we will get all the information to you.

we have to make very quick, split-second decisions all the time. Things during a sale don’t always go the way they are supposed to and when selling, you’ve got to be able to transition on things all the time. So to say that an auctioneer has to think quickly on their feet is an understatement! There are all kinds of things going on during a sale. An auctioneer has to take and recognize bids from the ringmen, and also take bids himself; if need be. They also have to be able to stay on track with notes and listen to others on the block, if they’re talking to them. All of this occurs while crying the sale.
SALE PACE As an auctioneer I like to keep the pace flowing by keeping the crowd engaged in what I’m selling. We like to talk about and describe the highlights of the animal. Some things we say may help buyers make a decision in an instance when that lot hits the ring. If livestock are slow getting to the ring or something happens out of our control, it’s our job to keep the attention on the lot we’re going to sell. As auctioneers, you never know if that is the lot that several people came to purchase or just one in the crowd. This is where true price discovery is entertained at that moment.
WHAT CAN YOU DO AS A CONSIGNOR
By Geoff Gates
An auctioneer can do many things and be an integral part of your success. However, you have to do many things to also help and work together with the auctioneer in order for success to happen. One of the things I like to do is hire good ringmen that I’m comfortable working with. Ringmen can be another key component to a successful sale. If asked upon, often times I like to make suggestions on working with certain ringmen. You need to pay those people and it’s well worth it! The ringmen are an extension of the auctioneer. They are closer to the bidders and can help the buyers know where the bid is at and what he/she is asking for. There’s also a great amount of communication that goes on from the ringmen to the auctioneer and vice-versa. If a tie bid comes in, it’s the auctioneer’s job to recognize one or the other. I’m the judge on a tie bid and recognize whose bid I saw or heard first. Another thing you can do as a consignor is to provide the auctioneer with as much information as you can about the livestock you’re selling. This gets back to me studying pedigrees and the things mentioned above. I also like to get a perspective on what you value your livestock at. As mentioned in last month’s article, be flexible and realistic about this. For example, if you want $2500 for a lot and I have a bid for $2400, it’s up to you to tell the auctioneer before the sale starts if you’re willing to sell at that price. It’s a lot better to cash one in the bank than to have to keep feeding it longer and hope to find someone to buy that lot later. The reason I mention this is because we might be able to make up that $100 difference on the next lot or one following. So what I’m saying here is that it’s also good to have an average in mind about your sale. Finally, it never seems to fail, if the livestock you’re offering are good, they will always sell well. That makes my job much easier and your smile much bigger!! Until next time, we’ll see you at ringside.
An Auctioneer's Perspective
An auctioneer’s job is to make sure you have the most successful sale on your particular sale day. When you hire an auctioneer, you’re hiring someone to conduct your sale and represent you as the seller or consignor. Not only on sale day, but leading up to your event, the auctioneer has to be tuned in to what you would like to accomplish. Of course, every sale you have you want it to be better than the last one. Or, if this is your first time having a sale, you’d like to get started off on the right foot.
AUCTIONEER CONDUCT A good auctioneer should conduct himself or herself with the utmost integrity and high quality standards. In fact, this might be one quality you would look for when making a decision to hire your auctioneer. Other qualities might be his or her appearance, their style of conducting a sale, and the flow of the sale from beginning to end. Most auctioneers like to have a quick snappy sale. Not because they’re in a hurry, but because of the excitement and tempo to keep things moving along. If you have a rather large number of livestock in the sale, this would be an obvious choice to move along at a rapid pace. The challenge of a big sale is to keep the people in the stands engaged in what’s selling. A 4 hour sale or longer can be trying on people staying in one spot. It’s up to the auctioneer and ring crew to keep those people alert and focused as to not miss out either on what can be perceived as a good deal, or in your case as the consignor, the true real value of the livestock.
ATTITUDE, IMPORTANCE, AND CONFIDENCE The day of your sale should be just as important to the auctioneer as it is to you. In essence, that requires that you can do the job they hired you for. I like to study and view the offering, (if I can) in advance. I study pedigrees and history of their sire & dam and successes of siblings or offspring if there are some. Knowing some background on your sale offering makes you more confident and makes me more confident. When I get up on the block, I like to do so with that confidence and control. When you first speak and call people to order, everything and everyone from then on, is focused on you. The auctioneer is then the ringleader for the rest of the day. An auctioneer’s talent is also reading the crowd. As auctioneers, november/december 2012

so very much! I have learned from them, followed them, met them and have realized that I too would like to be a piece of it all – but just a little piece focusing on the people who are following their dreams of doing things just like me – I want to be able to cheer them on, create their place and walk beside them while learning and growing with them.
Making Peace with Me
Have I already had some bumps in the road? Sure have and that is ok because it makes me learn, makes me better, makes me humble and it makes me put that much more effort into what I need to be doing to get it done. See ~ this not only happens to kids, big kids like me experience this too. So what does this have to do with you, my junior livestock enthusiasts? You are no different than me. You reach, you strive, and you work hard to try to figure out your place in the world. Not only with school but with family and we all know with our show projects. It is not important to have the biggest show string at the county fair or win the speaking contest but it is important to realize I have done my best, I love this and I am ok with it all, I am at peace with the place I am. Are you doing what you love, are you enjoying it? Then for me that is enough, success will follow, personal success for sure!
I started blogging about two years ago ~ I am still deciding if I enjoy blogging or not, it seemed like the thing to do at the time so I won’t give up!! Some days I feel really inspired and so I blog and other days I am not feeling the love for it so I don’t. Recently I had the urge to share with my followers my most recent revelation. I have found peace with me. On July 1st, I took the plunge to start a new business – (a full service marketing and public relations business) with my partner Sara ~ it is something I have dreamed about each and every day for a long time. I just never knew if I could do it or who to team up with or if it would work, was I too old to start something new ,would I have time to dedicate to it and on and on with all the questions that overwhelmed me
Soooooo getting back to my adventure ~~~ almost three months into it I can say I am in love with it all ~ I enjoy helping folks follow their dreams, I enjoy the connections I am making with my colleagues , many who have become mentors and I have made peace with me – being the best I can be with it all ! So what was the purpose of my blog and what gave me the thought to share with all of you, it’s this ~ to just accept each day God puts in front of you ~ find balance with it all ~ find peace with yourself that you are right where you need to be and learn to accept it all ~ once you have, the journey is simply amazing!
But what I thought was going to be a crazy adventure filled with added stress and wandering into unchartered waters has come as a sense of peace for me! Really? How in the world did that happen? Because this is where I was meant to be! I have found peace with myself, my abilities and what I do. I have realized the famous quote that is now a mantra for which I am ~
As a side bar note – who hasn’t “liked” us on Facebook yet? Pacific Showcase Magazine has a place on Facebook and it is a great spot to share updates, photos, experiences – please use it as a tool to communicate information! It’s fun!
“Peace is the result of retraining your mind to process life as it is rather than how you think it should be ~ Wayne Dyer There are a whole lot of wonderful graphic/communications/public relations firms out there – they have lots of experience ~ they are well known within our industry of agriculture and I respect them

THE ffa in your state The FFA
Proficiency Award Program The FFA Proficiency Award program is an outgrowth of the Agriculture Education philosophy that students learn by doing – finding ways to relate what students learn in the classroom with practical applications of knowledge outside the classroom. To that end, FFA members are encouraged to develop a supervised program in their chosen area of interest that will allow them an opportunity to apply what they learn in the classroom to real life situations.
In this section we are featuring the State Stars from California, Idaho, and Oregon. For complete lists of Proficiency Award Winners from all the Western States FFA Associations, check out the websites listed below.
Arizona: www.azffa.org California: www.californiaffa.org Idaho: www.oregonffa.com
The Proficiency Award program was developed as a means of providing motivation for students to develop additional expertise in their chosen area of endeavor and to develop skills that they can apply toward their future careers. There are currently 53 areas in which students can apply for Proficiency awards covering everything from Agricultural Communications to Wildlife Management. Each area has two categories, placement and entrepreneurship.
Montana: www.montanaffa.org Nevada: www.nvaged.com/ffa Oregon: www.oregonffa.com Utah: www.utffa.org Washington: www.washingtonffa.org

ast issue, I introduced Animal Handling and the basics of lighting, sound, footing, and movement. This issue, I will discuss Dr. Temple Grandin and the impact she has had in animal handling. Dr. Temple Grandin is a world renowned animal welfare specialist, professor at Colorado State University, world’s leading designer of animal handling facilities and is autistic. I mention her autism, because it has profoundly affected the professional person she is and how she views animal behavior. I first had the opportunity to work with Dr. Grandin while I was a graduate student in the Animal Science Department at Colorado State University where I was able to help collect research data on animal behaviors in a feedlot setting. Dr. Grandin is an accomplished researcher and attributes her ability to understand animal behavior to her autism.
also determine the amount of vocalization (mooing, baaing, and squealing) in the lead up to the harvest floor. Additionally, the stunning efficacy (if the animal is stunned properly) and insensibility (was the animal rendered un-sensible due to the stun) are evaluated. The McDonald’s Animal Handling Team not only introduced this audit system and how it would be utilized, but we conducted training with meat plant management and employees. Many folks were originally skeptical about the usefulness of such an audit, but over time this audit has proven itself a great measurement of proper animal handling. Plants found that as their animal handling practices improved, their plant efficiencies improved and thus, it was good for their business as well as good for the animals. It is interesting that most solutions to animal handling issues are low cost and low technology. The types of problems most often identified at meat packing plants are flooring that has become worn over time, lighting issues (shadows or trying to move animals into dark spaces) and improper use driving devices. A simple shade cover or back light can immediately improve how animals are moved. I have seen cardboard put up to create solid side walls on lead ups do wonders to eliminate visual distractions. Low cost driving aids include PVC pipes with caution tape or plastic flags, plastic baseball bats filled with any small item that will rattle. It is not only necessary to put the right tools in the employees’ hands, but also to give the employees the knowledge of how to use them.
In the late 1990’s, Dr. Grandin was asked by the McDonald’s Corporation to develop an objective way to evaluate animal handling in the meat packing industry. At the time, I was working for Golden State Foods, a food manufacturer and distributor for McDonald’s. Most of my job was to work with the raw material suppliers to assist them in providing meat products that met McDonald’s high standards for quality and safety. I regularly visited and audited meat packing companies across the nation. Dr. Grandin, working in conjunction with the American Meat Institute Foundation (AMIF), developed a series of animal handling audits that have been implemented throughout all segments of the meat industry. I was fortunate enough to be part of a 6 person team who traveled with Dr. Grandin to meat plants to introduce this auditing system. The audits include evaluation of animals being unloaded, in the holding pens, and as they are moved to be harvested. In these areas, auditors count the number of slips and falls by the animals, evaluate the facility design and look for proper flooring. We

Training and continuous monitoring are crucial elements for a successful animal handling program. People must understand the basics of animal behavior and how they perceive light, sound, flooring, and respond to visual distractions. To move livestock correctly, you must work with an animal’s natural behaviors. Calm animals are much easier and safer to handle than excited animals. Calm animals will move slowly through well designed facilities with little use of driving tools. The proper use of driving tools is a must; there are numerous driving aids available. Electric prod use should be a last resort, if it is necessary to use a prod continuously there is some distraction to the animals that must be corrected. Employees must be taught that they are doing their job well when animals are moving easily requiring little assistance from the worker. The old adage “you can’t control what you don’t measure” is true in animal handling as well. Once good animal handling programs have been established, they must be monitored to maintain their focus and encourage continuous improvement. Today, most all meat plants are audited by third party auditors at least annually and plants conduct animal handling training and internal audits on a regular basis. In the early 2000’s, the Professional Animal Auditors Certification Organization (PAACO) was formed and began standardized training of animal auditors. Dr. Grandin has stated that the
greatest strides in animal handling have been made in the past 15 years. Effects on meat quality have been documented by use of proper animal handling. Good handling practiced result in decreased bruises, decreased blood splash and decreased incidence of dark cutters. Dr. Grandin has had a truly remarkable impact on the animal agriculture industry. Over the past 30 years she has become a sought after speaker, distinguished author and has been honored with many prestigious awards for both her work in autism and animal handling. She is the author of New York Times bestseller Animal in Translation. In 2010, Dr. Grandin was named by Time Magazine as one of “The Top 100 most influential people in the world” and she is the subject of the 2010 HBO movie entitled Temple Grandin. She was recognized by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association as a Beef Top 40 Industry Leader and received the Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2009, Dr. Temple Grandin was inducted in the inaugural class of the Meat Industry Hall of Fame. I am honored to work with Dr. Temple Grandin, proud of the changes that the industry has made and I encourage all of you to look her up, watch her movie and take a look at animal handling through her eyes.

CJLA News AND UPDATES! In this issue you will find all the points recorded through Surf-nTurf Jackpot Show – except for the High Desert Classic Show. I do have those results and will tabulate them along with the most recent shows that have been held and I receive those results as well. Once I do that, I will post the new points to the CJLA website. I will send an email to everyone to let you know they have been posted.
CJLA members will be selling raffle tickets for these drawings. We also have sponsor forms and information available and you can contact Heidi Beljean for information and with any questions. Information is posted on the CJLA website – www.cjlainfo.com. We are so thankful for everyone who is interested in the CJLA and who are willing to support it each year! Without your help, this would not be possible.
In this issue you will also find the 2012 Jackpot Breakdown and Upcoming Events. We are excited to have some new shows on board and I am sure you will enjoy having those additional opportunities to exhibit your animals. Because we are putting this breakdown in this issue, which is a month earlier than previous years, a few of the shows did not have a confirmed date. We will post those dates in future issues and on the website as we receive them. The great thing about this list is that it includes all information on each show – species, location, contacts, etc. so you can use it as a master list for reference throughout the upcoming year.
The CJLA is also offering an ESSAY CONTEST for 2012 members. The deadline to submit an entry is December 15th. There are 3 age division categories and all information is posted on the CJLA website. Cash prizes will be awarded for this contest!! We need donations of items for the auction at the Banquet. We would like to have as many items as possible so be thinking what you can bring! As the end of the year approaches, I will be sending out more information to all members. Some things will come to you by mail but due to postage costs, I send many notices by email. PLEASE check your emails for messages from the CJLA! They Are Important!!!
For those of you who will be joining CJLA for 2013, there is a membership application in this issue. If you are a current member, you have also been mailed an application and the Sullivan Supply Trailer has membership forms at the shows they attend. Just remember, points start when you join so if you compete at shows before you join, those placings will not count toward points.

Now on to the BIG TOPIC! The 2012 Award Banquet is just around the corner – February 16th, 2013 to be exact! We are really pushing for sponsorships and donations now in order for us to be able to provide the amazing awards we give out each year. We will be doing several fundraisers prior to the banquet and the

Selecting the Right Boar for the Job! By Rachelle Bailey Breeding for summer fairs is in full swing! It seems like we just got done with the summer county fairs and we are already breeding for 2013! Most youth exhibitors with swine breeding projects typically use artificial Insemination (A.I.) to breed their sow or gilt. There are often many unanswered questions in regards to ordering semen, selecting the right sire, price, storage and availability of boar semen.
There are viruses such as PRRS that can be passed on through boar semen so it’s a great idea to ask about how often boars are checked.
When to breed?
Some boars can be in high demand especially when breeding for summer shows, I would recommend booking a boar early so you are guaranteed the boar you want. If your breeding female looks like she may not be showing signs or she got missed, some boars can be cancelled the day of collection by a specific time so you will not be charged for the semen.
The generation interval of a pig is very fast as it only takes an average of 114 days of gestation for a sow to farrow piglets. It is very important to understand your sow or gilts estrus cycle, which on average is every 18-21 days. Once that is determined, it’s a good idea to find out the actual weigh-in date for your county fair and the weight requirement. Most market hog shows range from about 215 lbs to 280 lbs. I would suggest breeding for offspring that will be between 5 to 6 months of age for the fair. If you breed too early or too late those pigs will not make the correct weight requirement nor be ideal in terms of finish and age for a market hog show.
Always ask about payment methods a majority of them will accept credit cards, cashier’s check or money order. When ordering semen, it’s a good idea to make a phone call and ask questions about the boar’s genotype and phenotype. Most boars in photos are hard to evaluate and sometimes you may not be able to make a trip to look at the boar in- person .I would suggest asking about the boar’s pedigree and what to expect out of his offspring. Most salesmen are very helpful and want you to be successful with your choice, so ask away. I would also recommend asking about the boar’s stress status as well. Be prepared to be asked questions about the female that is getting bred, her stress status and what improvements that can be made for the next generation of offspring.
How to find a boar stud? There are numerous reputable boar studs throughout the United States to choose from. I would suggest an internet search or speaking with other breeders on where to potentially purchase semen. A majority of the time, boar semen has to be used fresh so if the boar stud that you select is in the Midwest then the semen will have to be shipped next day. There are also boar studs on the West Coast that you can drive to and actually view boars in person or even drive to pick up the semen. Many boar studs have websites and you can even be put on a mailing list as most will send out a spring and fall catalog to showcase current boars that they have to offer.
Collection dates are usually Mondays and Thursdays for the majority of the boar studs. If the boar stud you chose is far away, the semen will have to get shipped next day air. If you are picking up semen, make sure you can arrange a time to pick it up. In my experience in dealing with fresh semen, it is best to be used within a few days after the collection, if stored properly the semen can be used up until a week old. There is always that chance that the semen can last longer but try and use the semen closest to the collection date as possible.
Questions to ask? Once you have located a boar stud that you’re interested in, it is very important to ask questions. Some questions that come to mind are price, health protocol, availability of the boar, payment methods and general questions on phenotype and genotype.
Semen shouldn’t have a rapid change of light or temperature as it can kill or damage the sperm cells. Semen should be stored at around 17 degrees Celsius and shouldn’t change much by a few degrees.
In regards to price, it’s very important to have a budget set up on which boars you can even look at. I would say that a majority of the boar studs will start at about $50/dose and could even get up to $500/dose. I would suggest purchasing at least 2 doses to make sure you get your female covered. Most studs will also have overrun semen pricing which is discounted semen that wasn’t purchased; there is usually no guarantee on specific boars but it something to look into.
After your breeding animal is exposed to the semen properly, monitor and see if she returns to estrus and if she doesn’t, you are on the right track into having a successful project for the year. Good luck this breeding season!
Understanding the boar studs health protocol is very important. november/december 2012

Blog from Piggy La’Market amount of exercise I’m going to be getting you would think I was a race horse! I know that race horses get Sel-Plex® in their food to reduce muscle tie up from aerobic exercise when running fast. If they think I’m going to be running, well, I’m just going to have a real long conversation with my owner! I’m thinking long and lean but not from running like a horse. It’s from the wonderful genetics that you passed on to me. Ma’Ma, I overheard my owner talking about genes and how the difference between the other selenium sources and Sel-Plex® can show up at the gene level. Wow, pretty cool, thinking how just a small thing can influence my immunity. It’s just so important that as I get ready for all of the shows that my immunity is working at its peak. I just don’t want to think about getting sick from being in all those places and going off my food. I could lose weight and never be able to win that big “Best of Show” ribbon like you. Ma’Ma, as you have always told me, the risk is just not worth it. I’m making sure to take my Sel-Plex® every single day.
Ma’Ma: I arrived safe at my new home. It is warm, clean and has a nice cover so that I can go inside when the weather is not perfect. I have fresh water all the time. My owner is so very dedicated to my comfort. A great big clean bed all to myself; I’m going to miss my little sisters (not!). I get the most wonderful food two times a day. My owner, who feeds me, is ever so careful, and never spills a bit. Ma’ma, the food here is just as good as at home! You always told me to make sure to read my labels, and to make sure that my diet contains Sel-Plex®. My immune system is so important. Sel-Plex® is the form of selenium most like what is found in all my good grains. When I get bigger and my owner takes me to shows; my immune system need to be functioning at its best. See Ma’Ma, I was listening to you! Selenium in the right form makes a big difference. Just like when you were pregnant with me, and Sel-Plex® was in your gestation feed, you were able to make better milk and colostrum so I could grow up big and ready to do my best for my human friends. Sel-Plex® works as an antioxidant and reduces the stress on my muscles from all the exercise that my human has planned for me. Oh, Ma’Ma, the owner’s advisor was telling my owner how many miles I am going to be walking in a day. They keep talking about my lean long frame, and they keep eyeing my glutes! With the november/december 2012
All this talk of food and all those good things inside it just makes me squeal and my tail to curl! Here comes my dinner. I’ll keep in touch! Your pick of the litter, vSent From my pPhone. 40

By Brooke Bennett Director of Communication, North American Limousin Foundation
of the show ring, with the organist playing. It always gives me goose bumps. In case you aren’t familiar with the NAILE (pronounced Nile), it takes place throughout most of November, and is the largest international all-breed, purebred livestock exposition. During the run of the show, 10 different species of livestock compete in the exposition, with the purebred beef and sheep events being the largest in the world. The competiveness and quality that enters the show ring is beyond any that I have ever experienced. Although the NAILE has one of the most competitive junior market shows in the country, the open and junior breeding shows tend to get just as much, if not more attention.
Fall has finally arrived. Temperatures have dropped, leaves have changed colors and fall livestock sales are in full swing. Also, the coming of fall brings the end of county and state fairs and competitors are starting to prepare for the major livestock shows. The big shows of the season are Cow Palace, San Francisco, CA, American Royal, Kansas City, MO, and the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE), Louisville, KY. If you have not yet had the opportunity to attend any of these shows, I highly recommend it. You will see a quality of livestock that you have never seen before. These are definitely three of the toughest market and female shows you will see take place during the season.
If you ever have the opportunity to travel to any of these shows, even as a spectator, I highly recommend it. There is so much you can learn from attending shows of this caliber, and you can end up making connections you never would have made otherwise, and meeting amazing people. You just might even end up coming home with something from one of the sales there.
The Cow Palace is most likely the show that you all are the most familiar and it is one that I hold near and dear to my heart. Showing is a long-running family tradition, as I’m sure it is for many of you. The Cow Palace was my first taste of participating in a national show. I can still remember being nervous leading my cattle up those slick ramps to that huge arena, and hoping that I could get down it again without me or my animal slipping. I’ve have had the opportunity to watch this show change, over the years from when I first began attending and we showed in the rodeo arena with its weird kind of spongy feel. Somehow, about halfway through my show career, the show was moved to its current situation where livestock are now shown in the lower barns. Although it is more convenient for animals to be shown in the livestock barn, I did grow to miss the adventure of hiking up the ramp, often times in the rain, afraid of being late for class because it was a trek to go to the show ring.
International Show Comparison:
Latin America Depending on which country you are visiting to attend a livestock show, the way shows are run vary drastically from country to country. In Latin America, the larger shows have box seating ringside, called the palco seating. Each ranch buys a box and they have seating right by the ring and each box has a waiter serving food and drinks all day. The ranches can invite guests to sit in their box seats and it is so nice. All of those seats are great, and you are literally just feet away from the show ring and a first-class view. The hospitality at these shows is second to none, as international breeders go out of their way to be friendly and accommodating to international guests.
If I were to compare the American Royal to any other show in the country, I would have to say that it is somewhat like the old Cow Palace, but with a grand Midwest style, and tradition to burn that has not diminished. The American Royal, which mostly takes place during the middle-end of October, is highly dedicated to youth and education. The American Royal reaches over 20,000 students annually with educational programs and events. In past years it has granted more than $1,400,000 to youth in the form of scholarships, competitive prize monies and educational awards. Of the major livestock shows, the American Royal, hands down, is the most focused on youth.
At shows, such as those in Latin America, women don’t show. Here in the United States it is common to see just as many, if not more, women in the show ring or in the barns working. In Central and South America, you don’t see one single woman working on a show crew or as a showman or fitter, it just doesn’t happen. It is also rare to see a young person show, as junior shows are very rare. We are so fortunate here in the United States that we ladies are on equal footing with the men.
Personally, unquestionably, the NAILE is my favorite show of all. I haven’t missed a show in the last 10 years, and am just as excited each year as I was the first time. There is just something so special about walking down the ramp onto the green shavings november/december 2012

“Colored cattle aren’t just one consistent color. They have varying light and dark shades. That’s why we worked with chemists to develop Stierwalt ProTouch Touch Up Paints in a variety of realistic colors. It may take a combination of these colors to find the perfect blend, so I recommend practicing at home to find the right blend for your cattle. I’m excited about the results these paints offer and I know you will be too!” Kirk Stierwalt Professional Cattle Expert
