Sullivan’s

Vita Hair Volumizer Foaming Shampoo ™

The first livestock shampoo to scientifically produce hair volume!

Vita Hair Volumizer™ Foaming Shampoo is formulated with a natural plant-based proprietary surfactant technology which creates an opposite acting polar electrical charge within each hair strand that actually pushes every hair follicle apart. This prevents the hair from sticking together, and actually springs it loose, making each hair follicle stand on end for a noticeable difference in hair volume and body. This, never before offered, exclusive chemistry for livestock consists of chemically altered ions. Ions are small electrical molecules within surfactants that usually have positive or negative charges which create an attraction to each other. In livestock hair, this attraction causes hair follicles to stick to each other. The non-ionic chemistry of Vita Hair Volumizer™ inhibits an unusual neutral charge to the ionic molecule of each follicle creating no attraction or pull between the hair strands. This neutral charge actually enables each hair follicle to stand free for extreme hair separation. All this with a plant based neutral pH makes it gentle and nourishing to the hide and hair as it gently cleans deep, down to the roots of each hair follicle. Fortified with Sullivan’s VITA HAIR™ a nourishing vitamin package to boost hair and skin health without added weight to hair. Designed to be used in a foamer.

A true “game changer” in hair performance!

Sullivan’s

Hair Savior Adhesive Breakdown ™

Hair Savior™ is just that! Finally, a liquid adhesive breakdown that is healthy for your leg hair. Hair Savior™ adhesive breakdown features a proprietary blend of the purest, mild cosmetic grade plant-based ester technologies to naturally attack and gently remove adhesives and touch-ups away from the hair. These specific plant based surfactants have been specially identified for their unique ability to naturally counter-act the tackiness of adhesives, changing their rubberized molecular resin structure to gently dissolve the bond from the hair without any harsh stripping action. This properly balanced pH formula prevents heavy, oily residues and will not create heat. Contains the Sullivan’s VITA HAIR™ nourishing vitamin package. Hair Savior™ is the first liquid adhesive breakdown product with added hair vitamins to hydrate and regenerate the hair. Mild and gentle, no harsh chemicals like other removers.

Hair Savior™ ... the showman’s choice for repetitive show schedules and leg hair health!

editor As we jump into summer with both feet, it seems like everything we are doing is going at full speed! As the year hits the middle months, we have definitely had enough winter and spring and we are ready for long days and lots of sunshine. For most of you raising projects for a county or state fair, now is crunch time. You selected your animals months ago, they have been on feed and you have been working with them regularly, but as you hit the middle to end period of raising your potential champion, things get more serious. Every day you are evaluating, fine tuning, working harder, and making plans and mental preparations for the grand finale – show day!

P.O. Box 41430 • San Jose, CA 95160 (408) 776-7611 • Fax (408) 776-9811 Publisher & Managing Editor: Heidi Beljean — (408) 888-2503 Email: pacshow@earthlink.net

Make a list – make plans so you are prepared. Entries, hotels, food, travel, getting the truck and trailer ready, packing suitcases and tack-boxes – the list should be detailed to cover everything you can think of. There is nothing worse than being on the road or arriving at your destination only to realize that you forgot a major item! No sense starting out stressed – a list and preparations can help alleviate a lot of potential headaches. But as you are doing all this planning and preparation, don’t forget to apply the same details to your animals. Step up the work and monitor every little detail to be sure your animal is at its best. Always be prepared for anything! Weather plays a big part in how you, your family, and your animals handle a trip and time at a show. When the temperature soars, people find ways to stay comfortable. Our animals have to rely on us for comfort. If they are not comfortable, they can go off feed, get stressed, not show well, and be irritable. Plan, prepare, perform – all three, when combined, equal success!

I know in my last editorial I talked about the devastating storms in the Midwest and East, and the tornadoes that wreaked havoc in their paths. Now we are hearing about the fires hitting many states. Don’t think something like this can’t happen to you. Get prepared – Be prepared! Have a family meeting to plan what you will do in case of any emergency. If you had to evacuate, how would you get your animals to safety? I know farmers and ranchers are a big family looking out for each other. Talk to those in your area and plan who you could call and where you would go.

It is my hope that you will want to be a part of the magazine as well, and that is why we have features like “All Around Kids, Fair time Highlights and Graduates.” Be sure to send your photos and information in for these sections. We also especially enjoy the Hot Shots pages. Many people say these are the first pages they look at when their magazine arrives in the mail! Everyone loves a good “Gotcha”!

Time to Plan Ahead!

The CJLA Show Season is in full swing and I am so excited to report that we have record numbers of shows and members! It is truly rewarding to be able to offer this organization to the junior livestock community and to receive the continued positive feedback from shows, families and our juniors who hit the road and show those project animals they have worked so hard on. We all know how fast time flies, and it won’t be that many more months until the next Award Banquet. So many have supported the CJLA throughout our past 13 years (yes, 13 years!!!) and it wouldn’t be possible to reward so many kids without you. We are always looking for new donors and if you are interested in being a supporter of the CJLA, I would love to talk to you and tell you what we are doing for the members each year.

A View from

INSIDE THE RING A Judge's Perspective

By Jim Vietheer This is a view of proper show ring etiquette from the perspective of a judge of County Fairs and Jackpots throughout the west.

are leaving the ring. However please don’t shake hands while the judge is talking on the microphone. It is hard enough to give reasons, let alone multitask, too! Wait until you have left the ring and tied up your calf. Then you can return and shake their hand properly. It is very satisfying to have young exhibitors make an effort to return and thank you for judging.

First, your attire is important, as first impressions sometimes make all the difference. If you are showing at your county fair most times a uniform, either 4-H, FFA or Grange, is required. As judges we understand how hard it can be to stay clean on a show day; however, don’t show up for the first class of the day in yesterday’s uniform that has been in the tack box all night wadded up. Do your best to be presentable, but we all know that as the day progresses stuff happens!

Most showmanship classes these days are non-fit or fitting optional, however that doesn’t mean un-clean. All judges' expectations are that your animal is blown off with no straw or shavings except the shavings on the legs that are picked up when moving about the ring. Just make sure you look everywhere for that one pesky piece of straw between the front legs or in the rear flank because it could mean the difference between winning and losing.

If you are showing at a jackpot, wearing appropriate dress still applies; however, there are many different approaches to how you may dress. Dark jeans without holes or rips and a collared shirt are always good options. Most judges don’t appreciate exhibitors who show up looking like they are going to a “grunge” concert. Proper footwear, which includes boots or leather lace-up shoes, is a must. Avoid tennis shoes or any type of open-toed shoes. Remember, you might win, so you will want to look good for the picture.

Here is another word of advice that is less for the exhibitor and more for those watching at ringside. There is not a sound proof or visual barrier surrounding the ring. For the most part judges can hear what is being said and who is saying it. If you have a comment about how the judge is doing that, of course, is your choice. But an overreaction by friends and family from outside the ring is a poor example of sportsmanship for your child. Do yourself a favor and keep your mouth shut. Do more listening and less talking and everyone will be better off, especially your child. If you think you can do a better job, by all means call some shows and put yourself out there. You may find it’s not as easy as it looks.

It is extremely important to be prompt and on time to every class you are in. A judge can usually see who is late and who is on time, and will rarely use an exhibitor who has made the class wait. If your showmanship class is the last class of the day, most judges have already decided who they think are good showmen. So it’s always a good idea to show your best, no matter the situation. Don’t rely too much on the show management. It is your responsibility to make it to the ring on time — don’t blame them if you are late.

And please keep the ringside coaching to a minimum. A simple gesture letting your child know their animal is set up properly is all that is needed. If your son or daughter has practiced at home, there should be no need for over-coaching from outside the ring. It makes you look foolish and it really doesn’t help your child at all. Trust me, we can see you.

If you lead into the ring first, please make sure you have an animal that can walk, and that you know where you are going. There is nothing more frustrating than having an exhibitor rush into the ring first, only to get stuck or line up in the wrong spot. If there is a set order and you’re first, and you know your animal won’t walk, don’t be surprised if the judge has someone else take the lead to set the pace. But NEVER pass another exhibitor in the ring unless you are instructed to by the judge or ring steward.

And finally, always be courteous to your fellow exhibitors. A judge will notice this, and it shows good sportsmanship. Remember to follow the rule around here, “Keep their heads up and look like you want to win.” Lastly, on a lighter note, always watch out for the dreaded balled tail when helping the person in front of you because it will snatch your show stick out of your hand at the most inappropriate moment. Don’t lose your cool, as it happens to everyone. We look forward to seeing you this show season from both inside and outside the ring.

There is some debate amongt judges on when it’s appropriate for an exhibitor to shake a judge’s hand. If your showmanship class has heats or “go’s,” you might want to shake hands as you july/August 2013

skills. If kids spend all their time striving to get high GPAs and SAT scores they often miss the opportunity to develop a skill set that is marketable. Maybe I’m simple minded. I believe high school kids should be required to take (dare I say) a vocational class of some type. Personally I like the agriculture classes. Doesn’t matter really, any quality vocational class will do. Business classes, metal shop, home economics, or heck, even high tech art and graphic communications classes, are valuable courses to help students identify potential career opportunities.

Catch the Fire

Sad part is, a vocational education is expensive. With budget cuts, schools have cut vocational education and increased the emphasis on “academic” classes. The prevailing thought is every student is going to college. Hogwash. Just like every kid who wants to be a veterinarian is going to pass organic chemistry and go on to be James Herriott. I have seen data that indicates of the high school freshmen who entered California high schools less than eight percent will graduate from college. What happened to the other 92% who had to suffer through high school classes that “prepared them for college?” They have to get jobs. But do they have the skills? Nope.

Sometimes you read something that strikes you and you feel the need to share. I saw this article written by my colleague and dear friend Dr Scott Vernon. I read it and I said to myself, my readers of Pacific Showcase need to read this too. So I called Scott and asked if he would not mind being the guest writer for this months column and he said – Sure !

I believe the problem is that students don’t even know what they don’t know. Read that again. I believe the problem is that students don’t even know what they don’t know. For some reason they have not been exposed to many career opportunities that exist. Regardless of what the newspapers say, there are tons of jobs out there. In our small town there are three classified pages of jobs going unfilled. Kids need to learn the value of work at an early age. I think all high school kids should work at least 10 hours a week at a “real job.” A real job is not on daddy’s payroll as a creative tax deduction, but instead having responsibilities and being honestly evaluated on job performance. Kinda like millions of moms and dads out there scratching a living.

So here we go — ~~~~~~~~ Start a Fire in Your Belly – Dr. J. Scott Vernon You know what makes me sad? Kids with no guts, no passion and no fire in the belly. As a teacher I have worked with thousands of students over the years. There are some who “get it.” Unfortunately there are many who are clueless. They don’t have the foggiest idea about what they want to do when they grow up. To make matters worse, some of them are college seniors sitting in my office wanting me to “help them.” Sorry. I can’t help those who can’t even help themselves.

Parents, you can help. First, take your sons and daughters on “field trips.” Explore different industries, professions and careers (yes, visit colleges too). Don’t abdicate that responsibility to the schools. They’re busy trying to get everybody to college. Visit a feed mill, tour a power plant, find out what they do on the 21st floor of a high-rise building in a big city. Go to the docks in a fishing town and talk to the fishermen. Find out what a “chief of staff” for an elected official does. Determine how much money a good auctioneer can make. See if there is someone near you who works to attract the film industry to your area to shoot movies. Ask ‘em if they know any movie stars. Be creative. Make it fun. Ask people about their jobs. You’ll be surprised how much you’ll learn and how willing many people are to talk about what they do for a living.

Maybe I’m just getting grumpy in my old age, but I have noticed over the last couple of years more and more students who barely have a pulse. They don’t know what they want to do. They’re not sure what they’re good at and they think getting to college is the ultimate goal. News flash. College is not a destination. What surprises me is my university has 49,000 potential students apply for 3,000 openings per year. U.S. News and World Report claims our school is “highly competitive.” Big whoopee. What good does getting in do if you don’t have any idea about what you want to do after you get out?

Second, help your kids set goals. Make ‘em lofty enough to challenge your son or daughter. But make them realistic enough they can be accomplished. I’d love to be a professional country singer, but the fact is I can’t sing. So I speak professionally. Doing that well challenges me, yet I have achieved an enjoyable level of success.

I think we have missed the point. Kids spend so much time working to get into college they fail to get an education. Same goes at the college level. Some spend so much time trying to get a degree they fail to develop any

Lastly, let your kids choose their path. If you have done a good job along the way they will make the right choice. When they find something productive they are passionate about, they will blossom. Even though I’m saddened by kids with no fire in the belly, I’m more sad when I see a kid in college on the wrong path just because it is the path his or her parents have chosen.

Third, help your kids get a job. Any job. Even low-paying jobs serve a function. They help kids decide what they don’t want to do! When kids have jobs they begin to make different decisions and they can learn new values.

Kids, develop your passion. Do it better than anybody in the world and people will pay you for it! Parents, throw gas on the fire that burns in your kid’s belly! ~~~~~~~~ Wasn’t that just great? I am inspired and ready to conquer the next thing! I have found the fire, have you ?

CJLA News AND UPDATES!

Finally – what you have all been waiting for!! The Points have been tabulated, recorded, and are posted below. All Shows held through May 31st are included in these points EXCEPT FOR ORANGE BLOSSOM KLASSIC. If you have earned points at more than 8 shows, your top 8 are posted. Keep in mind that as you attend more than 8 shows, your score can change as lower point shows are dropped and replaced with your higher point shows. Another thing I want to mention is that it is very difficult to compare point scores between members unless you know how many shows another member has earned points at. One member may have earned points at less than 8 shows and that is their current total whereas another member has 8 shows included. This is the biggest reason points and standings can change so much throughout the 2nd half of the year. For example, a person with 6 shows counted now could go to two more shows (for their 8 shows), earn 80 points at each and jump their total up by 160 points! If you have questions about how the points work, please contact me and I will explain further.

We still have awards left in the office from the CJLA Banquet! To help defray some of the mailing cost, we were asking for a small $5.00 donation so we could ship packages. All the awards were personalized with the division, placing, and date. Some really neat awards were given out – metal laser-cut mirrors, frames, and pen sets, as well as personalized award jackets and other one-of-a-kind items. We also have awesome CJLA t-shirts that every 2012 member was to receive. If you did not get your awards or t-shirt at the banquet, PLEASE contact us to get them shipped to you. Please send in your postage fee and we will get your items shipped right away. Mail your payment to CJLA PO Box 41430 San Jose, CA 95160 . You can also go to the Sponsor Section on the CJLA website and use PayPal to pay your mailing fee. You will just need to also send an email or call us to let us know what member the postage is for. The last option to get your award and/ or T-shirt is that we will bring them to California State Fair Junior Show or Surf-n-Turf Jackpot ONLY – if you let us know prior to either of these shows.

PATTAYA INTERNATIONAL LIVESTOCK SHOW 2013 competition, no matter where you go. Most of the cattle are fitted and handled by fitters with very little handling by the owners. The main exception was a string of cattle presented by one of the agriculture colleges which used the cattle as a project for the students with the students doing the fitting and showing. All of the cattle except one heifer were shown by men. They are trying to get more women involved in the showing as they already are very active in the fitting part.

By Mike Bennett Jim Williams, a prominent breeder of Brahman and Shorthorn cattle and an international judge from Texas, was asked to judge the Pattaya International Livestock Show in Thailand in April. I had asked if I could tag along because of the opportunity to visit another country and to view cattle from another part of the world. A month before my wife and I were to leave, I got this call. Would you judge some crossbred cattle classes? Absolutely, was my answer. I was not only going to get to see cattle from another country but also participate in the evaluation of those cattle.

The quality of the cattle was quite good, particularly the American Brahmans, which had 75-100 head entered. The cattlemen in Thailand do not have the same resources in the way of feed stuffs and forage we do here and so, consequently, the condition of the cattle is different. Jim and I talked and emphasized the same things we would do here such as structural correctness, ability to move, feminity/masculinity, and muscling. You would not find the kind of heavily muscled steers or heifers that we see here because of the breeds used. The Thai prefer leaner types of cattle. However, I did judge several classes of Lowline Angus-Brahman crossbred cattle. Interesting.

The Pattaya International Livestock Show is the biggest show in Thailand. It was a pleasant surprise to find the building facilities much like ours and the show ring designed to showcase the ability of cattle to move about the ring. It was a sand/dirt ring that was packed, with no sawdust or shavings. The whole barn was air conditioned, which was much appreciated, as the temperatures were in the 90s with at least as much humidity. Other types of animals were also being shown in another part of the barn. The different species included goats and poultry. One major breed of poultry being evaluated was the fighting rooster. The culmination of that particular competition was an afternoon of cockfighting in a professional looking ring complete with an electronic scoreboard.

Jim and I were both asked to emphasize showmanship in our judging of the classes as the exhibitors wanted to learn the best way to present their animals. We spent time in the classes working with the exhibitors and they were very appreciative. Jim judged a showmanship class and it was the most heavily entered class of the entire show. Everyone wanted to be in this event. It was an educational class but still very competitive. By the end of the class everyone was a much better showman and it was rewarding to see the progress of the exhibitors in presenting their cattle. As one would imagine in a climate like this, hair was not a big factor. Hair in this part of the world would probably be considered an undesirable trait.

The management of the show wanted Jim and me to judge and use the same ring protocols as we would back home, but to explain exactly what the “fitters,” as the showmen were called, needed to do to improve their show techniques. The show also acts as a hands-on learning experience for the Thai showmen (and women), as they are still learning a lot of the basics of showing cattle. The exhibitors were very excited about having us there, particularly Mr. Jim, as he was prominently featured on billboards throughout the city. Our small group was treated to top-notch hospitality during the entire trip and we were very well fed and thoroughly entertained.

The show is in its sixth year, and the founders are adding more events to it every year, from car exhibitions with more than 200 participants, each featuring a vehicle with an enormous sound system and enough colored, synchronized lights to make each one look like a Las Vegas casino, to car racing (drifting). We were escorted to each event and given the close-up and personal vantage points. They even have an annual Cattlemen’s Night which includes a live band playing country music. It was a very festive event in which owners, fitters, the judges, and cattle show fans could mingle. I wish them the best in their endeavor to build this event.

Most of the cattle in Thailand have to have some “ear” because of the climate and environmental conditions, with very warm temperatures high humidity, and a variety of insects. There is a tremendous need to develop sources of protein that are efficient and economical. Breeds used in their program include the French Charolais, German Simmental, and the native breed which is not very performance oriented. Of course, the American Brahman breed is the most dominant and the key component in their crossbreeding. The preferred percentage in their crossbreeding plan results in an animal that is 75% American Brahman, and 25% French Charolais or 25% German Simmental, although some programs are including a percentage of native cattle. Most of the genetics used are shipped to the country via semen sales. BSE stopped the importation of live cattle, but hopefully that will change soon as the cattle breeders in Thailand want very much to import breeding cattle.

I enjoyed my experience very much, and am very appreciative of the time spent with so many gracious people. One thing that made it comfortable and familiar feeling was the realization that a cattle show is a cattle show, even halfway around the world.

The show was competitive and included many of the same influences (know the judge, make sure he knows you when you come in the ring, etc.) plied there as attempted here. Competition is july/August 2013

Keepin' It Real With Whitney from Earn Purple

When In Doubt, Just Chill Out! By Whitney DeMaria nervousness, and get your focus on!

It’s 9 A.M., an hour from show time, and the barn is in chaos. The sound of blowers, water spraying, parents and kids arguing, and livestock calling out fill your ears. Your adrenaline has already kicked into high gear. Your nerves are completely on edge. You begin to feel the anxiety taking over.

First, breathing is so important. When our breathing shortens and gets faster, our body thinks it’s in “fight or flight” mode. Our bodies do not recognize whether we are running from a bear or just going into the ring to show an animal, but wow... the difference is, of course, huge. So we learn to control our breathing by taking a deep breath in through our nose, counting five seconds, holding for one second, and then breathe out through the mouth slowly while counting to ten. This relaxes our bodies. By allowing oxygen to flow to all parts of the body, slowing the heart rate, and allowing our minds to settle, we can focus on the task at hand. Do this a good ten times whenever you start to feel anxious, stressed or overwhelmed. I definitely recommend practicing this breathing technique daily so you know what to do when showtime rolls around.

When I was showing and rodeoing, there were numerous times I really let my nerves get the best of me. When that happened, I wasn't able to get the most out of myself and the experience. I wasn't thinking clearly and my body was in sheer panic mode. Now I don't know about you, but that really used to irritate me! I mean, I put in so many hours practicing, feeding, cleaning and exercising. I wanted the most out of the experience, but my anxiety always seemed to get in the way. So let us get down to how you can prevent anxiety, most of your

Another technique to relax is to sit quietly, breathe deeply in through your nose and out through your mouth, and start visualizing your complete routine. Every detail from where you walk into the ring, to who you will be next to, to how you will show your animal, to the eye contact you will make with the judge, to the placing you want to receive. The more detail of what you want to happen and how you will do it, the better. If you practice this diligently, you will feel more confident. Confidence allows your mind and body to work together to help you achieve your goals. By the way, you can use these tools in anything you do in life. A good way to calm your nerves is to be grateful for what you have, and what you have achieved. If you are not content with what you have and the hard work you have put in at this point, it is nearly impossible to ever be satisfied and grow from the experience. You will always be thinking about what you wished you had or didn’t have. Being grateful allows us to be happy in the moment so when we do achieve our goals and dreams, we feel fulfilled and appreciative for longer than a day.

LEarn 2 earn Sheep & Goat CAMP August 3rd & 4th, 2013

Parents, these are great ways to calm your anxiety, too! Remember, this is supposed to be fun and exciting! Try to be understanding of the nerves of you children, and be as supportive as possible. The last thing they need is someone yelling at them. Now, this doesn’t mean your kids should be disrespectful or inconsiderate of the hard work you have put in to get them here. That is why it is called “teamwork.” Teamwork allows everyone to achieve more. Working together makes it a fun experience. Practicing these techniques at the show will surely make your experience smoother and more fulfilling!

Charles Spurgeon, the Preacher of the People, said, ”Anxiety does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow, but only empties today of its strength.” Do not waste another moment in anxiety. Stop, breathe, visualize, and count your blessings. The power of these steps is truly amazing! Practice them and see for yourself.

Farm Legislation Update By Kirk Kimmelshue year for any one farm. This was a significant achievement for a program that many both in and out of agriculture would argue had seen much abuse and fraud over past few decades.

Farm Bill Stalls in United States House

It’s now back to the drawing table for the House Agriculture Committee where the chances of another Farm Bill advancing out of Committee and onto the House Floor are extremely uncertain.

Congressional dysfunction has stalled one of the most important pieces of agricultural legislation for the 2013-2014 legislative session. The U.S. House of Representatives in a 195-234 vote failed to pass the 2013 Farm Bill.

Livestock & Dairy Legislation Gain Momentum in California State Assembly

The pinnacle piece of farm legislation, which encompasses farmer safety nets like crop insurance, conservation programs, commodity marketing guidelines, dairy support programs and a whole host of producersupported ideas, has already passed out of the U.S. Senate. Reaching a bipartisan Farm Bill compromise didn’t seem to be a problem for Congress’ upper chamber, but in the House it was a different story.

In 2013, more than 1,000 head of cattle were stolen from California farms and ranches and even more livestock was stolen from producers throughout the western United States. A new bill on its way to the California State Senate hopes to crack down on these thefts.

Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas (R-Oklahoma) couldn’t get his House colleagues on board for this critical piece of legislation, despite last-minute efforts and pleading on the House Floor.

Assembly Bill 924 by Assemblyman Frank Bigelow (R-O’Neals) would establish a fine of up to $5,000 for anyone convicted of livestock theft. Proceeds collected from the fine would go to the California Department of Food and Agriculture’s Bureau of Livestock Identification (BLID) to help bring closure to current open cases and to help combat future livestock theft.

“Whether you believe the bill has too much reform or not enough, or whether you believe the bill cuts too much or it doesn’t cut enough, we have to move this document forward to achieve a common goal,” Lucas said. “No matter if you represent the people that produce the food or the people that consume the food, we have to meet the needs of all in a responsible fashion.”

“With the passage of AB 924, California is one step closer to ensuring that people convicted of crime are properly punished,” Bigelow said. “AB 924 is a small but important step to help protect farmers and livestock owners from theft and would help ensure that when theft does occur, those cases are closed in a reasonable timeframe.”

Chairman Lucas, perhaps one of the most well respected members of Congress and a cattle and wheat producer from Southwest Oklahoma, didn’t ever give up on the bill. He closed by urging Congress to show the American people that the body is not a dysfunctional mess.

The bill passed out of the California State Assembly in May and awaits a hearing in the California State Senate. If the bill is successful in the Senate it will move to Governor Brown’s desk to hopefully be signed into law.

“If you care about your folks, if you care about this institution, if you care about utilizing open order, then vote with us on final passage,” Lucas pleaded to his colleagues. “Vote with me to move this bill forward. And if you don’t, when you leave here they’ll just say it is a broken body, a broken institution, full of dysfunctional people, and that’s not true!”

Important Legislation for California’s Dairy Industry is also in motion in the California State Assembly. Assembly Bill 31 by Assemblyman Dr. Richard Pan (D-Sacramento) aims to help put a stop to dairies closing their doors in California. Nearly 400 dairy farms have closed in California in the last five years and California’s remaining 1,500 dairies are fighting for survival.

Despite Chairman Lucas’ exemplary effort and hard work by Ranking Member Collin Peterson (D-Minnesota), the two could only muster up 195 votes, with only 24 Democrats supporting the bill. Large contingencies of the Democratic Caucus felt the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which dealt with food stamp payments was too harshly cut in the legislation, and thus couldn’t support the bill.

In 2008, the latest year for which figures are available, California’s dairy business and largest agricultural commodity was responsible for creating 443,574 jobs and $63 billion in economic activity for the state. According to the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) data, California dairy farmers suffered losses of $882 million last year.

Industry leaders throughout agriculture voiced their disappointment in the House’s inability to pass a comprehensive bill. “In the midst of the struggling economy, rural America has been one of the few bright spots,” said National Cattlemen’s Beef Association President Scott George. “This failure by the House places cattlemen and women behind the curve on having agriculture policy which not only provides certainty for producers nationwide, but also incorporates priorities important to the cattle industry.”

AB 31 aims to adjust the California’s milk pricing system in a way that would still allow cheese companies to purchase the cheapest milk in the country, but would address the current financial crisis facing the state’s dairymen and women. The bill was held in the Assembly Appropriations Committee, but stakeholders are hopeful the California State Senate can address the problem before the end of the current legislation session and provide a much-needed boost to one of California’s premier industries.

Despite most all farm groups being in full support of the legislation, they couldn’t pull in enough bi-partisan support for the heavily reformed legislation. Some of the highlighted reforms achieved in the House version of the bill included a payment limit that reduced farm program payment limits, capping commodity payments at $250,000 per july/August 2013

First at the Finish Line By Rachelle Bailey certainly try and weigh the animals once they reach 100 lbs and every two weeks at minimum. In this example the weight of tag 1 was taken on 3-20-13 weighing 150 lbs and then a week later on 3-27-13. Subtract the 2nd weight from the weight taken prior, 164150=14 lbs, then divide 14/7 which is 2.0 lbs a day which is the Average Daily Gain (ADG). Then take 2.0 x 60 (days left to fair) which 120 lbs projected weight gain, that weigh is then added to the weight of 164 to get a projected weight of 284.

4-H and FFA members start your engines it’s time to grow and finish your fair projects. There are numerous steps to take after the hog is selected and purchased, the pig will go through a growing and finishing stage which is just as important as selecting and starting out with the proper showpig. The growing stage is after the initial starting phase which is typically from 50 to 100 lbs, on average is about 2 to 3 ½ months after the birth of the animal. I suggest to customers to purchase a showpig at 50 lbs 120 days prior to the fair and something that will be about 6 months old at the fair. This way the animal will finish out at a younger age.

Weight management records are used to determine how much the animal is fed daily to ensure the project animal falls into the fairs minimum and maximum weight requirements, each fair is different so make sure you check before you purchase the pig and it’s the correct weight when starting out.

During the growing phase I would suggest first weighing the pig when it’s about 100 lbs. Because the pig goes through so many changes during the initial starter phase when it reaches about 100 lbs it usually starts to become more uniform in what its consuming a day. If you would like to weigh your pig before it reaches 100 lbs that is even better.

Once the pig reaches 200 lbs it naturally goes into the finishing stage. The finishing stage on average is about 200 lbs to 250 lbs. The pigs ration is changed to maximize its genetic potential which is a drop in protein levels. Pigs will start to finish with fat cover usually starting through the jowl region and working the fat deposits of the ribs, across the loin to the rear of the animal. Finish is very important as this fat finish will make the pork palatable and juicy for the consumer who purchases the animal after it’s shown at the fair. Some hogs are later maturing and require extra weight to be properly finished. Hogs during this period are either hand fed 4 to 6 lbs depending on weight management or are still on full feed.

The daily feed intake during the growing stage should be monitored to see what the feed conversion of the pig is. The average feed conversion in swine is a ratio of 3 to 1, meaning it takes on average about 3 lbs of feed to put on about 1 lb gain. The feed conversion is important to know because as you hand feed you want to make sure the hog is getting enough nutrition for its growing stage to maximize its genetic potential. During the growing stage the pig should either be on free feed (keep record of how many lbs are put in the feeder for the best management or feed at a rate of 4 to 6 lbs a day. For example a pig with a feed conversion of 3 to 1 and fed 6 lbs a day should gain about 2 lbs daily. Below is an example of feed management records. Animal ID

Proper growing and finishing feed and weight management is key to a successful end product and the fair and after the animal is processed. The environment is also very important to manage as well. Animals should be observed at least twice daily, kept in a clean environment, health should be monitored and fresh feed and water should be available. Animals should be dewormed every 30 days on a rotation of product. Any injections given to the animal should be written down along with the withdrawals date. The growing and finishing stages and management are important to ensure a proper endpoint for the animal. Once you get to the finish line, checkered flags are waved and maybe even a trip to the winners circle. Good luck in the showring this summer!

This is an example of feed management records for individual animals. I would suggest weighing the pigs once a week if possible. I understand that the use of a scale may be limited so I would july/August 2013

Big Fun at the State Fair —

A Week of Learning By Doing

By Brooke Bennett

rule it allows the juniors to showcase their personal fitting skills and in a way it levels the playing field for those exhibitors that can’t afford or choose not to hire a jock to prepare their animal for the show ring.

It is the heat of early summer, heading into the official inferno of summer, which to competitive livestock exhibitors means their early mornings and late nights are spent in the show barn working to prepare their livestock for one of the highlight shows of the year, the state fair.

Having this rule in place also gives exhibitors the chance to work with siblings, fellow 4-H and FFA members and friends, side-by-side to help achieve a shared goal. I feel that doing the work without the help of a professional really allows exhibitors to take total ownership and pride in this project. Juniors have spent the better part or the spring and summer working long and hard on these animals, and they are in total control from the halter breaking to the final swoosh of Show Bloom on the way into the ring.

Working to beat the heat, showmen understand the importance of working their stock when the daily temperatures are at the lowest so not to cause any heat stress that could set back their hard work. More often than not, during the early mornings and late evening, it is more common to find showmen rinsing their beef cattle, running show lambs and exercising pigs than spending time with friends or sitting poolside. As I do my daily scroll through the social media feeds it is a common occurrence that someone is taking a poll asking which state has the best state fair. The question that comes to my mind as I read this is how do you define “the best state fair?” Is it the state fair that is the most competitive? Has the highest number of entries? Draws the largest crowds? The most temperature-controlled environment? This question can be answered in so many ways, and it is just a matter of opinion, especially when it comes to the most competitive. Having attended numerous state fairs across the country, there have been times I would confidently put the winners from the California State Fair against any other state fair champions and I think the California State Fair winner would be a top competitor.

Now I’ll admit — since I, like so many other juniors, showed multiple species at our state fair, I sometimes found this rule to be inconvenient and downright annoying at times. I’m not going to lie. As I look back on this, as annoying as I thought it was at the time, I really believe that it has helped me in the long run to not only be a better exhibitor, but it taught me to be more organized and to prioritize my responsibilities. No matter how desperate you may feel, convinced it won’t all come together in time, magically it always does.

Although it has been a few years since I have actually attended the junior week of the state fair my memories as an exhibitor have not faded. What I think sets the California State Fair apart from the rest is the exhibitor-only fitting rules; well that and that exhibitors have to show in white, but that’s another story. By having the exhibitor-only fitting

Regardless of the state fair in which you show, I don’t think you can choose a clear winner to the common poll question “who has the best state fair?” Each state fair has a quality that sets it apart from the rest, but at the end of the day all the exhibitors are striving for the same goal, to bring home the champion banner.

july/August 2013

I do realize that several other state fairs also follow this protocol, and I commend them for this. This serves as a way for exhibitors to build self-confidence in their abilities. And isn’t confidence building one of the things we are trying to do here?

Words That

HURTAgriculture

Taking note of how consumers hear what we say by David Daley, Ph.D., associate dean and professor of animal science, College of Agriculture, California State University, Chico

lead by well-meaning, but often misinformed college professors who gather information from the Internet. The next generation is being blithely trained in the “horrors” of our current agricultural system.

In my dual role as a “full-time” cattle rancher and “full-time” university administrator and college professor, I have witnessed how words that farmers and ranchers understand and often use cavalierly can create consternation and even fear among our customers.

Industry and industrial agriculture: How many of us frequently refer to the cattle “industry,” the pork “industry,” the wheat “industry,” etc.? Although more subtle, this has the same long-term implications as factory farming. The term de-emphasizes the family nature of the business, the care for the land and resources and the value we place on renewable natural resources. Industry is associated with high- and low-tech manufacturing processes and is viewed as extractive and non-sustainable. Although manufacturing is an important component to growing and distributing food, “industrial” agriculture doesn’t play well with the increasingly urban public.

After about 25 years of college teaching and venturing further outside of my comfort zone, I have witnessed the remarkable devolution of understanding of our food production system. We (colleges of agriculture) are partially to blame for this dramatic trend. We have worked so hard to demonstrate that we are scientifically-trained, educated professionals, requiring tremendous technical and business savvy to survive – instead of hay seed farmers and ranchers – that we have given the impression that we no longer care for the land or animals.

Corporate agriculture and agri-business: Most of us in production agriculture truly understand that incorporating a farm or ranch is a business decision, and that the overwhelming majority of agricultural operations that incorporate are familybased. And, we also recognize that our sophisticated and efficient food production and distribution system does require large scaled agri-business corporations. However, that does not diminish the fact that the tern has been used to demonize parts of our food system. With the speculation and fraud on Wall Street, the bailout of multi-national banks, “corporations’ is not a word that creates a sense of integrity and safety with our consumers. Indiscriminate use of the term sows seeds of distrust.

Somehow, people think we are all about science, technology and short-term profit, rather than the conscientious land stewards and food producers that we know we are. Our new generation of farmers and ranchers has been taught to label themselves as animal scientists, agronomists, producers and agribusiness professionals. Yet, consumers trust farmers and ranchers more than they trust those impressive titles. Words hurt. And words create a very strong impression of food production to an unknowing and nervous public. Some of those words and phrases have been promoted by those who wish to change (and in some cases destroy) agriculture as we know it. Other words have crept into our agricultural lexicon and we use them without knowing the impact on those we are trying to feed. At the very least, they create misunderstanding. At most, consumers begin to fear and distrust the food supply.

Genetic engineering, genetically-modified organisms and biotechnology: What a remarkable technology that holds such incredible promise for innovations to increase the food supply and feed a growing world population with finite resources. I know that and you, as producers, know that. The average consumer does not.

Is there a simple solution? No. But we should think carefully about the words we choose when we talk to a non agricultural public. Consider just a few examples.

As a college professor over the better part of the past three decades, I have watched the growing distrust of science which truly saddens me. And, there is a perception that scientists can be bought by the highest bidder. For every study you find making a claim, you can quickly find a study with conflicting results. And to the layman, the credentials of the scientists are indistinguishable. People don’t trust science, and we are often our own worst enemy.

Factory farming: This term is perhaps the most damaging phrase to confront all of agriculture, but particularly damning to animal production. No one likes to envision their food being “factory” produced. Factory conjures up images of smokestacks and discharge pipes. This phrase, more than any other, has created a negative perception with so many generally well educated, bright consumers because of the image it portrays. And you would be hard-pressed to find any college or university that has not had multiple showings of movies like Fast Food Nation and Food, Inc., july/August 2013

We speak in technical language and acronyms, simply believing the power of our facts are sufficient to win the argument. Sorry. They don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t utilize biotechnology, 62

but caution is the better part of valor. I have a colleague who is not from agriculture, but an incredibly bright, articulate and respected university administrator. After a meeting one day she confided her respect for agriculture, about what we do and how underappreciated we are. She added however, that she wasn’t a science person and how genetic engineering frightens her as a consumer.

chemicals can and have played in their daily lives. Herbicide/pesticide: Once again, we have these broad terms that are considered “bad” by too many consumers. Yet, these products are essential to growing an abundant, safe food supply. I am not suggesting we change the term, but where are the easy, quick and simple facts which demonstrate the importance of these products to the average consumer?

Feedlot: Following the production of the films Fast Food Nation, Food, Inc. and Power Steer, the term “feedlot” has become synonymous with an evil factory where animals are abused and stand up to their knees in their own excrement. Ridiculous! The fact remains that this is the image that the term creates for too many people. On a recent tour of an extremely progressive, clean feedlot in the west, a senior animal science major from a non-agricultural background confessed that before my class, she thought all the cattle were born and raised in a feedlot for their entire life. She had “learned” that in her non-ag classes. The term is being used effectively and aggressively by those who would like to destroy our current model of beef production.

Conventional agriculture: What the hell is that? Is there anything conventional about what we do? I realize the term was coined to distinguish organic, sustainable, alternative agriculture from standard practices. It is a very bad misnomer. There is nothing conventional about successful farmers and ranchers. Conventional implies standard and non-changing. Are you kidding me? If you are still in business, you are constantly changing. The use of GPS, new irrigation methods, new varieties and new vaccines, just to name a few. We are not conventional, but we are innovative and progressive! On a recent visit to the San Francisco International Airport, I marveled at the diverse array of people – all sizes, shapes and ethnicities. The only thing consistent was all of them need to eat every day. And most of them know nothing about how food is grown other that what they have read or heard in the popular press. And we (farmers and ranchers) don’t help matters much. Our job is to create trust, and that requires simple, clear and direct explanations of how we grow food. So the next time you break into your agricultural jargon with a non-ag person, ask them what they really think some of these terms mean. You may be in for a shock. For the good of all (farmers, ranchers and consumers), we need to start to adjust how we communicate.

CAFO: Confined Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO). The concerns with the term CAFO are the same as the concerns for the term feedlot. This term is lesser known to the average consumer but being used heavily by regulators and extremists. This term is now part of the federal lexicon. It won’t go away, but needs to be carefully explained. Chemical: Since when did this become a bad word? The miracles of what some chemicals have provided to mankind are too numerous to mention. After suffering through several semesters of chemistry, most of us in the sciences understand we are composed of chemicals. Somehow, the average consumer has begun to equate chemical with poison and has no idea the positive impact
