from the
editor This issue will be in your hands in January 2014, but as I sit here and write my editorial, it is Christmas Eve 2013. I know I always make the comment on how fast the days, weeks, and months zoom by. After eleven and a half months of high-speed life, I love to slow down and reflect on the past year. This is a time to be joyful for our many blessings and those we hold dear. I am so thankful for my family and friends. They lift me up when I need it, give me strength to draw on, and are supportive and encouraging and helpful in doses that can’t be measured by any conventional method, but is always the right amount! Thank you from the bottom of my heart – you know who you are!
P.O. Box 41430 • San Jose, CA 95160 (408) 776-7611 • Fax (408) 776-9811 Publisher & Managing Editor: Heidi Beljean — (408) 888-2503 Email: pacshow@earthlink.net
I love doing this magazine! I get to visit with the most amazing people every day about livestock, farming, agriculture and kids who love the same things. Our agriculture community is far-reaching and so inspiring. No matter what is happening now, there is always hope, strength and belief in the future. It’s like being wrapped in a huge bear hug that makes you believe anything is possible. And it is, you just have to believe!
Production Manager & Art Director: William Crump — (662) 257-1998 Email: pacificshowcase@gmail.com
Another thing I love is the CJLA! The California Junior Livestock Association. The CJLA started with a dream. I wanted to be able to do something for all the kids out there who were like me when I was growing up – they love having project animals, selecting and feeding and training, going to shows or fairs, putting in the long hours, and long drives, and lots of sweat and dirt and a few tears along the way. All for the love of it – for setting a goal and working hard, becoming a team with their animal, and in the end being able to say “we did it”! More than a project, more than a check at the end, rather a partner, friend, companion, always to hold a place in your heart.
Representatives: Katina Costerisan (661) 330-6392 (CO) Email: kcosterisan@gmail.com Mike Rusher (503) 888-1823 (OR) Tiffany Carter (530) 409-5143 Pacific Showcase limits its liability resulting from any and all errors, misprints and/or other inaccuracies in the advertisements and editorial content. The opinions or views expressed in all editorials are those only of the writer or persons interviewed and not the Pacific Showcase.
I have been able to make the CJLA succeed since 2000 because of the support that we have received from so many who believe in the organization, and most importantly, believe in the kids who are members. It takes a huge amount of financial support to be able to hold an award banquet where we can recognize their efforts and successes over the past year. After doing this for 14 years, I know it is easy to become complacent and used to things being the same year after year, to maybe not think about the CJLA still needing the support, or thinking that someone else will get it taken care of. But fundraising and support is a year-long effort and the need for help doesn’t change. We mail and email sponsor letters, and spend hours on the phone looking for support and asking for donations.
Reproductions or other use of this magazine in whole or part of the contents without written permission of the editor is prohibited. Pacific Showcase welcomes readers contributions. Articles of interest, show results, sale results, and calendar dates are welcome and will be printed on space available. To have articles or pictures returned, include a stamped, self-addressed envelope. Send all submissions to address above. Pacific Showcase is published bimonthly. It is mailed first class and third class bulk mail at Morgan Hill, California. Postmaster: send address changes to Pacific Showcase, P.O. Box 41430, San Jose, CA 95160.
I would like to ask each of you to take a minute and think about how CJLA has benefited your family, your business, or someone you know. Maybe you are a breeder and the buyers of your animals have been taking them to CJLA shows. Maybe you are a business whose customers are raising projects. Maybe your neighbor or friend has a child who loves the livestock life and you see them heading up and down the road going to shows and then coming home with ribbons or stories of the great experiences they had. So I am asking you to pitch in, throw out that big bear hug, and spread your belief in the CJLA and our youth. Any and all donations go directly back to our CJLA members. You can go to the CJLA website – www.cjlainfo.com for information or give me a call. Our upcoming banquet is on February 15th and is held at the Mid State Fairgrounds in Paso Robles – in conjunction with the Western Bonanza Junior Livestock Show. I hope we will see all of our CJLA members at the banquet. This is your night and the celebration is planned for you!
Subscriptions: (Bulk mail - one year - $25; two years - $45.) (First class one year - $35; two years $65.) For processing of new subscriptions - please allow 4 to 6 weeks. For address corrections, send current mailing label along with new address to Pacific Showcase.
Time to Plan Ahead! The March/April Issue is our

One more word on the CJLA. 2014 will be our 15th year! How exciting is that!! I want to thank the families, friends, and youth members, the sponsors and supporters, and the CJLA show managers who take their time to put on the sanctioned shows each and every year. Like I said above, this “community” is what makes it all possible! As 2014 takes off, I look forward to visiting with you or seeing you somewhere down the road. I am working on new ideas for the magazine and taking the CJLA to the next level. Be sure to check out our websites, Facebook, Instagram, and E-blasts for latest news and information.

macro-minerals (Calcium, Phosphorus, Magnesium, Sodium, Potassium, Chlorine, Sulphur) than the micro-minerals (Iodine, Iron, Cobalt, Copper, Manganese, Molybdenum, Zinc, Selenium). If animals do not consume enough of the macro-minerals, this will cause reduced production, infertility problems, weakness of the bone and increased incidences of non-infectious diseases. Deficiencies in micro-minerals (trace elements) can cause a variety of diseases and conditions depending on which mineral is deficient. The words may appear more than once. Good luck!
