Fall is here! Days are getting shorter, the leaves are starting to turn, and even the air feels different. I love this time of year – things wind down from the hustle and bustle of Spring and Summer and we look forward to the holidays. As you read this, Thanksgiving is almost upon us. That day to eat too much, enjoy family and friends, and give thanks for our many blessings! And then… CHRISTMAS! My favorite holiday!! Joy is truly in the air during the month of December. It’s not just giving gifts – don’t get me wrong, I LOVE to find a justright, special something for a certain person, but I believe Christmas is about rejoicing. Whatever your beliefs, Christmas is celebrating that and all that is good and right in our lives. I hope you all enjoy your holiday season, too!

Of course, everyone in agriculture and livestock knows this business waits for no event or holiday. (How many Thanksgiving dinners or presents under the tree have waited until the cows were fed or bedded down, or a calf, lamb, hog, or goat, was born?) So, Fall also heralds the “Sale Season.” Weekend after weekend, you have a choice of where to go to search for your next project. Big dreams and new goals are on your mind as you make those new purchases. What an exciting time it is. You’ve got that new prospect home and are getting them started, feeding and working with them to become a show animal. You envision them competing and winning as you focus on the steps to attain that goal.

The expense of purchasing a project is only half of what it takes to raise a competitive animal. Remember, the work you do at home (care, feeding, training, etc..) is the most important part of getting the outcome you want to achieve. Responsibility and effort on your part makes for a better end result! I’ve mentioned Fall and Christmas so far, but let’s not forget the New Year. With the reflecting brought on by turkey dinners and Christmas trees, we also are renewed with purpose and hope for the new year ahead. That means New Year resolutions! We all make them, and we all are successful with some, while a few fall by the wayside. The main thing is to make them, to accomplish a goal, do something better, or try something new.

Juniors, I challenge you to make a resolution to try something new. Maybe it will be in your 4-H club or FFA chapter. Both of these groups offer so many opportunities. Try a new project, whether it is the judging team, parli pro, sewing, horticulture, or anything else that is interesting to you. Being a wellrounded person will help you into the future. You never know where it will lead, who you will meet, or what opportunities will open up for you. You might just find out you really enjoy, and are good at, something totally different from what you had thought. It might become a moneymaking project for you, too!
Pacific Showcase welcomes readers contributions. Articles of interest, show results, sale results, and calendar dates are welcome and will be printed on space available. To have articles or pictures returned, include a stamped, self-addressed envelope. Send all submissions to address above. Pacific Showcase is published bimonthly. It is mailed first class and third class bulk mail at Morgan Hill, California. Postmaster: send address changes to Pacific Showcase, P.O. Box 41430, San Jose, CA 95160.
As I write this editorial, the National FFA Convention is going on. FFA members from all over the United States are competing and enjoying all that the event has to offer. The sights and sounds fill their heads with hopes of what they can accomplish. Inspiration is at every turn. Colleges showcase their schools to attendees, companies have booths featuring their products, and most of all kids from all states are meeting and exchanging ideas and becoming friends. These contacts and friendship are ones that will last a lifetime. For those of you who haven’t yet made it to a state or national convention – set this as a goal. I wasn’t in FFA, but as 4-H member, I did everything I could. I will never forget attending the National 4-H Convention in Chicago. I was one of the seven National Beef Winners which is an honor I cherish. And the convention was so much fun. I met so many people – what an experience! So don’t miss out on achieving great things in 4-H or FFA!
Subscriptions: (Bulk mail - one year - $25; two years - $45.) (First class one year - $35; two years $65.) For processing of new subscriptions - please allow 4 to 6 weeks. For address corrections, send current mailing label along with new address to Pacific Showcase.

“At Ottenwalter Show Pigs, we have been extremely pleased with the product quality we have been receiving from MoorMan’s ShowTec. The MoorMan’s ShowTec Burst Starter has been heads and tails above any other product we’ve used as far as consumption and bloom in our sale pigs. They look better, bloom sooner, and have a “fuller” appearance. Also, they transition really well into the MoorMan’s show feed product line. Their product is always fresh and consistent, and just as important, their sales reps are competent, easy to get in touch with, and they aim to please. We have been very happy since we switched over to MoorMan’s ShowTec.” —Russell Pedrett, Ottenwalter Show Pigs

CJLA News AND UPDATES! This is the November/December issue of the Pacific Showcase magazine. The last one of 2014! Which means that as you read this, we are SUPER BUSY with year-end stuff for CJLA! Points, ballots, banquet preparations, new member enrollments, sanctioning 2015 shows, recruiting sponsors and supporters-our checklist goes on and on! It is definitely crunch time!
was sent because we are asking for everyone’s help in getting sponsors for the CJLA Award program. The 2014 award banquet will be on February 14, 2015 during the Western Bonanza show at Mid-State Fairgrounds in Paso Robles. The CJLA award program relies completely on the generosity of our many supporters so it’s extremely important to spread the word about the CJLA. Thank you to everyone who helps out with this!
Right now though, you are interested in the POINTS! In this issue, ALL shows are included through Oktoberfest Mkt Goat Show. The Surf n Turf points are for the lamb, hog, and goat divisions. Our point recorder did not have time to process their cattle results before the deadline to go to print so they will be included in the next update. PLEASE CHECK YOUR POINTS! If you have any questions, CALL or EMAIL us right away so we can check our records. We will be emailing final points to 2014 members for year-end verification. Lamb, hog, and goat points will be updated following the November Northern Exposure show and the cattle points will be completed following the Holiday Classic Show in December. When we send out final point standings, you will be given a deadline to verify your points and totals, after that deadline date, all points will stand as recorded. PLEASE watch your emails from CJLA for these messages.
Members will also be receiving banquet invitations, ballots for Jr board elections and special awards and contest information. Watch for these too. In this issue you will find the 2015 Jackpot Breakdown. This is a comprehensive list with shows, dates, species, and contact information. Pull it out and keep for your reference. 2015 is literally packed with shows for steers, heifers, lambs, hogs, and goats. Keep this list for your reference and if you have questions about a show, be sure to contact that show directly for more information. California junior livestock exhibitors are so fortunate to have so many shows to compete at. As you travel down the road, be sure to say thanks to all the staff and volunteers who work countless hours so you can do what you are doing. If you need to contact us, send an email to cjlainfo@yahoo.com or through the CJLA website: www.cjlainfo.com.
2014 members should have received by now through the mail and by eblast, a 2015 membership form and a sponsor packet. Be sure to get your membership sent in prior to the first show you attend in 2015 so you can earn points from the start. The sponsor packet

The Ultimate Finish CHOOSE THE WINNER’S BRAND
®
For a deep, rich black look with a touch of shine, use NEW Stierwalt Maxx Black ProTouch after Stierwalt Base Black to complete this special two-step process for finishing the perfect leg. Maxx Black is specially formulated to highlight the depth and dimension achieved by Base Black without breaking down adhesives like other shiny paints. You’ll get exceptional coverage with a touch of holding power, making this a show day must have.
“Maxx Black ProTouch is the best black finishing paint on the market because it doesn’t hamper the holding power of your adhesive like other gloss-type paints tend to do. It covers with a deep, rich black color and semi-gloss shine for a great finished look. You’ll love the way it works with Base Black ProTouch for maximum results, but it can also be used by itself if less coverage is needed.”
