Where did the summer go? I can’t believe that kids have already started back at school! Wasn’t it just a few weeks ago that school was letting out for summer vacation? It sure seems like it! This year, the way our weather has been around here – we haven’t really had the extreme heat we normally have during the summer, and so it never quite felt like summer for long. Lately, the mornings have been “Novemberish” -feeling cool, overcast and drizzly, so my mind and body is already getting ready for fall things to begin. Of course, all around us, we are bombarded with seasonal suggestions: pro football players are starting their pre season games, stores are putting fall decorations out and kids are already starting to contemplate where their next project is coming from. Many county fairs have already been held and a few are coming up before the end of the year, so it is definitely that time of year.

Here is an interesting thought - September 1st should be considered “New Year’s Day”! I just read that in another magazine, and I have to agree! The 1st part of September is when we figure out our schedule for the Holiday season and the next year. Between school, sports, jobs and your projects, your family has to have a game plan on how you are going to fit everything in. The traditional New Year’s Day (January 1st), is mainly good for making that New Year’s resolution that we hardly ever keep (me included). The schedule and changes you make in September usually stay with you till next June. In order to accomplish everything you want to get done, or be involved in, you need to set a schedule, write down a game plan, and then follow them in order to achieve your goals.

Pacific Showcase limits its liability resulting from any and all errors, misprints and/or other inaccuracies in the advertisements and editorial content. The opinions or views expressed in all editorials are those only of the writer or persons interviewed and not the Pacific Showcase.
Make plans early – time goes by fast! Now is the time to decide about your cattle projects. This is the time of year for sales of project calves, so start figuring out where you are going to purchase them, your budget, make contact with breeders, and get all your facility and equipment prepared.
Reproductions or other use of this magazine in whole or part of the contents without written permission of the editor is prohibited.
Don’t wait to the last minute, because you might miss the special winner. Nothing worse than, going to a place and missing out because someone beat you to the punch. As you look through this issue, you will see many ads from breeders and for upcoming sales. Many have websites where you can view their sale offerings and everyone welcomes your calls to discuss their animals. It is always a good idea to take the time to visit the breeders before the sale and view in person what they are offering for sale. The more prepared you are, the more likely you will be to purchase the animal of your choice and that will work the best for you. There is nothing worse, then missing out on an animal you really wanted, just because you did not act quickly enough or did not do your homework ahead of time.
Pacific Showcase welcomes readers contributions. Articles of interest, show results, sale results, and calendar dates are welcome and will be printed on space available. To have articles or pictures returned, include a stamped, self-addressed envelope. Send all submissions to address above. Pacific Showcase is published bimonthly. It is mailed first class and third class bulk mail at Morgan Hill, California. Postmaster: send address changes to Pacific Showcase, P.O. Box 41430, San Jose, CA 95160. Subscriptions: (Bulk mail - one year - $25; two years - $45.) (First class - one year - $35; two years $65.) For processing of new subscriptions - please allow 4 to 6 weeks. For address corrections, send current mailing label along with new address to Pacific Showcase.
Time to Plan Ahead!
As you hit the road in search of your next “special animal”, I wish you good luck and especially, good times with your family.
The October/November Issue is our
Club Calf Issue
In the next issue, we will feature “Fair Time Highlights”. This is where we will print your fair pictures that were not listed previously in our Show Result section. Please send in your award photos along with your name, fair, and award. As always, let us know when you have a change of address so we can keep your magazine coming your way. Send us your Hot Shots, news, and upcoming events, so we can put them in the magazine.

Boneso Livestock Online Sale Hosted By: Breeders’ World Online Sales Bidding will open October 1st and begin to close October 3rd at 6pm PST. Steve, Mary Ann, Wes and Maggie Boneso invite you to their upcoming sale. This year, Breeders’ World Online Sales will be hosting our event. We are very excited about this group of calves, which are sired by Grizzly, Heat Wave, Rodman, and more. Their dams make up our 80-head cowherd. By utilizing embryo transfer as well as purchasing top genetics, we have been able to build a program capable of producing quality calves that you will be proud to own and show. The offering this year includes black and smokey club calf prospects, plus some fancy show heifers. These calves will work at all levels of competition, and are eligible for the Bred and Fed division at the Mid State Fair. They are also qualified for the California Club Calf Association classes and awards at various jackpots and the state fair. Our new Herdsire is “Walks On Water”. He is co-owned with Chad Holtkamp, Chris Rosa and Wade Rodgers, and we are confident he will be a positive influence to move our program forward. His first calves will be on the ground soon. Semen is available thru the owners, or can be ordered directly at www.walksonwaterbull.com. For more information on our program, and the calves available through our upcoming online sale, please give us a call. All calves are available for viewing at the ranch, and we would love to have you come by to see this tremendous set of prospects in person. For an appointment, we can be reached at: Home phone: 805-227-4031 Cell phone: 805-294-3816.

Getting a Bigger Piece of the Pie – Direct Marketing More of Your Project
By Carol Albrecht
next person in line and told her we were cashing her deposit. She was delighted.
Many who show and exhibit livestock focus on just that; the showring. That is, after all, why we drive long distances and use the best genetics and feed. A quality program takes quality inputs. But have you considered the other avenues available for making revenue from your project?
One of the tricks of direct marketing is finding a “niche” for yourself. A niche is something that your farm or operation does that is better or different than others and that there is a market for. Something the consumer wants. Some of our farm’s niche markets are: grass-fed beef, pasture raised eggs, natural colored yarn, browse finished goat, and soy free chicken. Why is this important? Because the consumer will pay more for something that is special, unique, different or meets a need they have. Let’s look at some of these niche market terms.
In agriculture, many of us are “price takers”. This means we look at the market reports and we sell for the market price. We take that price. If it is not high enough we complain, but still continue to take the price. The average dollar spent on food by consumers in the grocery store gives just seven cents to the farmers who raised the raw ingredients. Those farmers are price takers.
Natural: This means that nothing artificial has been added. This is a really broad term and most consumers have caught on that it can mean just about anything.
In 2002, we on our farm had to become “price makers”. In a series of articles over the next few months, I hope to share with you what we learned in that process and how you can begin to make more from your project.
Farm Raised: Conjuring up images of Old MacDonald this term takes the consumer to a happy place. But again it is super broad and does not mean much. We don’t usually raise agricultural products in shopping malls.
So what happened in 2002? A crash of farm prices for our olive crop. A crop that had been worth over a million was now worth about twenty thousand dollars. Obviously, this was an unacceptable situation. So rather than hauling everything off the farm and selling it at the market price, we learned to sell it ourselves. Today we have replaced that income and then some by selling directly to the consumer. This is called direct marketing or by some relationship marketing. We know the names of our customers, we know about their families and lives and they know about us. They come to the farm and we chat. Those hundreds of customers give us a very secure market for our product. If one of them decides not to buy ground beef this week it is not a problem, we have other customers. If we were selling our entire harvest of beef to a store that changed its mind, that would be a problem. In fact, we have waiting lists for most all of our products. Last week a customer backed out on a whole beef and we simply called the
Grain Fed: This means you took the time to feed grain and consumers believe that you did not feed by-products or steroids or anything else other than grain. There is still a market for grain fed in some upper end restaurants and with some older consumers and in some rural areas. Hormone Free, Antibiotic Free: These are pretty self explanatory but mean quite a bit to consumers. Free Range: This means the animal was not confined in a cage or stall. It has to have access to the outside world.
Maine-Anjou Chimaine • Club Calf
feedlot where trucks bring the feed.
Grass-fed: Animals in this category ate grass at some point in their lives.
Steers Available Year-Round – Just Give Us a Call! Lou & Suzanne Seever 3687 Old Santa Rita Rd. Pleasanton, CA 94588 august/september 2010
Hand Raised: This means that the animal was raised by a person rather than a machine as in a

100% Grass-fed: This term only works with ruminants (cattle, sheep, goats) that are able to consume 100% grass. This is a hot niche right now because some studies are showing higher levels 34

of omega 3 fatty acids, conjugated linoleic acids (CLA), and other healthy fats in grass-fed meats. Articles in popular magazines and some recent documentaries and books have sent consumers searching for grass-fed.
of product in a given year you need not be officially certified to be organic. If you sell more than that you will need a certification from an agency. This requires record keeping, paying of fees and annual inspection. Prices for organic items can be very good and might be worth the extra trouble.
Pasture Raised: This term is used for swine and poultry that are not capable of getting all of their nutritional needs from pasture. So the animals are kept on a pasture and fed complete feeds on the side. The expectation is that about 30% of their nutritional needs will come from the pasture.
These are just a few of the terms you can use to market your product as special and worth more. Instead of telling a prospective customer that you “need to unload a backup lamb”, you can mention that you have a natural, grain fed, hand raised animal available at a premium price. That customer may be so excited that she will tell all her friends about this wonderful lamb she has found….
Humane or Animal Welfare Approved: These terms come with a certification from an organization. Many of these certifications are free and require that you follow a set of guidelines and submit to an inspection once or so each year. Checking out the guidelines on their various websites will let you know if they would be a good fit for you.
In the following issues we will examine special niche markets and marketing techniques for beef, swine, sheep, goats, and poultry. If you have topics you would like to see covered, please send me an email at ccakfa@aol.com and I will do my best. Carol Albrecht and her husband Kurt own and manage Chaffin Family Orchards. Carol is the third generation of her family to farm the land in Coal Canyon north of Oroville, California. The Albrechts grow Citrus, Stone Fruits, Pastured Poultry, Olives, Beef Cattle, Meat Goats and Sheep on 2000 sustainably farmed acres. Over 80 % of their products are direct marketed to the end consumer through a farm store, farmers markets, CSAs, buying clubs, and an internet store. Carol and Kurt have 6 children ranging in age from 28 to 8. Five of their children were adopted from the foster care system and it was while writing years of behavior reports on children that Carol discovered relaxation and enjoyment in writing. Kurt and Carol’s purpose is to raise healthful food in a way that gives back to the land, the eater, and the families of the ranch.
Predator Friendly: Again a certification from an organization. This term means you work with the predators by using electric fence, guardian dogs, etc. rather than hunting them. Consumers who are very into wildlife will seek out these products. Guidelines are available on the predator friendly website. Organic: A national set of guidelines that must be followed in order to list your products as organic. If you sell less than $5000 35

— s r e b m e M FFA
Why Are We Here???
By Kristi Mattes
can be a productive member of their communities, as well as the agriculture industry. Whatever our goals may be, it is imperative that we all understand the importance agriculture plays in our lives each and every day.
Since 1928, FFA members have been asked this very question every time they meet, and they respond by saying: “To practice brotherhood, honor agricultural opportunities and responsibilities and develop those qualities of leadership, which an FFA member should possess.”
For those of you that think FFA is just, “Cows and Plows”, over the next few issues I hope to acquaint you with all that I have learned and shared with others about the organization.
As the worlds largest inter-curricular youth organization, the FFA gives today’s youth the opportunity to explore personal growth, leadership development and career success. In 1917, classes were started in rural high schools for farm boys to study agriculture. Although many changes have occurred through the years, one thing hasn’t, and that is that the FFA is the only organization devoted to the promotion and education of our youth about agriculture.
The FFA has a motto:
“Learning to do.
Doing to learn.
Earning to live.
Living to serve.”
I look forward to showing you how the FFA learns, does, earns and serves its members, its chapter, its community and its industry. By the time we are done, you’ll know exactly, “WHY FFA IS HERE”.
The FFA today looks very different from the FFA of 1928. For one thing, it now includes women, for which I am very grateful. Many students today have little or no connection to a farm and minimal knowledge of agriculture. So what brings them to our program? There are a variety of reasons. Some are from an agriculture background or have had parents or siblings in the program, others want to be a part of our organization because their friends have told them how much fun it is, and then there are those who have been assigned to the classes by school counselors. Whatever the reason, I truly believe that today’s FFA has something for everybody.
nder —
When the Future Farmers of America Organization started, you had to join and pay an affiliation fee to get all the benefits it had to offer. Years ago, California started the trend of affiliating every student that enrolled in an agriculture class which automatically made them a member of the FFA organization. Now every student can participate in as many activities as they wish.

CJLA News
One more item I would like to remind you about - our award program relies entirely on the generous donations of the many people and businesses that support the CJLA and its members, and your help is needed in order for us to meet our goals. I would like to ask you to please spread the word about the CJLA and your participation in the association, and to ask for donations from those who you think would be interested in supporting the award program. If you need more information from us, just let us know and we can contact them or provide you with forms and information to pass along. As an added incentive, each year we give a SPECIAL PRIZE to the person who brings in the most sponsorships, so keep that in mind as you talk to people about the CJLA!!!
I hope you have all had a wonderful summer! In this issue, you will find the updated points for all members in all the divisions. Check out the list below to see which shows have been tabulated for points. If you have any questions at all, please give me a call and I will be happy to go over your points with you. Do not wait until the end of the year as it is much easier for me to check my records and show results immediately rather than in December!! If you have attended more than 8 shows, your top eight shows are included in the total listed here. There are still more shows to be held in all divisions, so you still have the chance to better your totals for the year-end standings
Until next time, keep on showing - and have fun!
The updated points are also listed on our CJLA website - www. californiajuniorlivestock.org. I enjoy hearing from you, so please continue to email me if you have any questions, concerns, suggestions, ideas, or comments!

As the end of the year draws closer, we are already busy planning for the annual award banquet scheduled for February 2011. In the next few months, we will be sending all members items that will need your attention. It is extremely important that you read through all material sent to you and fill out and return any forms that ask for your input. Every year we give special awards to members in each specie. These awards are given based on your votes for those members whom you think deserve this special recognition. We also mail out ballots for you to select new junior

CJLA RULE CLARIFICATION AND STEER DIVISION CHANGE EFFECTIVE BEGINNING 2011 SHOW YEAR
EITHER THE BLACK/BLACK-CROSS OR ALL OTHER COLOR DIVISIONS, ANY ENTRIES DETERMINED NOT TO MEET VISUAL PUREBRED BREED CRITERIA. Black/Black-Cross Division: **New for 2011**ALL BLACK AND BLACK CROSS STEERS WILL BE SHOWN IN THIS DIVISION. Black steers with white markings and Blue Roan steers must also compete in this division. Only Purebred Black Angus will compete in the English Division. The CJLA will no longer allow Black Steers with white markings to compete in the ALL OTHER COLOR division. There is no longer a percentage of black to white that allows for exhibition in the All Other Color Division.
The CJLA Steer Division is divided into 3 categories for the awarding of points: English; Black/Black-Cross; and All Other Color. Please note the specific requirements listed below for each of these divisions. All Sanctioned Shows are required to offer Divisions for each of these categories at their event, regardless of the number of entries. English Division: This division is open to PUREBRED Shorthorn, Hereford, or Black Angus steers only. These steers must meet the respective breed association requirements for registration. Steers that are not purebred or do not meet the respective breed association requirements for purebred registration must be shown in either the Black/Black-Cross division, or the All Other Color division. Steers that show questionable characteristics for purebred exhibition may be asked to show proof of purebred pedigree to the CJLA and/or a Breed Association Representative. SHOW MANAGEMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO CLASSIFY STEERS ENTERED IN THE ENGLISH DIVISION AT THEIR EVENT, AND TO MOVE INTO Steer Division English 1. Johns, Brett......................... 228 2. All Other Color Division: **New for 2011**THIS DIVISION IS OPEN TO YELLOW, RED, GREY, BUFF, CREAM, & WHITE STEERS, or any combination of these colors. Black steers and Black steers with white markings are not eligible for this division. These changes are being implemented to avoid any confusion as to which division a steer can compete in. This also makes it very clear to Show Management when checking in steer entries and reduces the inconsistencies in classifying animals from show to show. 24. Animal Issues in the State of California and Beyond By Kara Backman
Livestock production in Placer and Nevada Counties generates gross income of over $14 million annually to local ranchers. Many types of livestock are raised in the two county area including cattle, sheep, goats, horses, and llamas. Ranch operations range from very large acreage with a lifetime of experience to small operations with little or no experience. There are over 300,000 acres of rangeland and 35,000 acres of irrigated pasture in the two counties.
Get Involved… Make the Public Aware…. Share Your Story That is the buzz word in agriculture these days. It appears as though agriculturalists have accepted farms being described as sustainable, local and fresh. However, we haven’t quite been able to put our fingers on what awareness looks like and how we share it. According to the California Farmer magazine, farmers need to tell their stories, even if it’s in the coffee shop.
The UC Cooperative Extension Livestock and Natural Resources program in Placer and Nevada Counties emphasizes economic and environmental sustainability. The Livestock and Natural Resources program takes local and statewide UC research to producers to help enhance and improve the sustainability of their farms and ranches.
Public awareness comes in many forms. The obvious is a public forum where large groups of people gather to hear a speaker tell their story with ambition and aspiration. The not so obvious is striking up a conversation with the person in the line behind you at the grocery store or the mail man/woman at the post office. The least favorite seems to be the farm visit invite! It is my belief that the reasoning lies with the farmer’s hesitation due to bad press. After all why would we want to invite a complete stranger to the farm with a risk of belittling our livelihood across America? Answer…WE HAVE TO! If we don’t, PETA and HSUS will get their way and eventually eliminate the livestock industry in the United States.
Maintaining agricultural viability in both counties has become increasingly challenging due to rapid development, reduced profitability, an aging agricultural population, and the lack of a younger generation ready to take over the farm. To address these and related issues, over thirty educational programs, workshops, and short courses reached over 2,000 producers in Placer and Nevada Counties. Get involved! Become a member of your local non-profit agriculture association. California Women for Agriculture, California Pork Producers, Wool Growers Association, Cattle Associations, Junior Livestock Association, California Waterfowl Association, the list is never ending. We as active animal rights activists HAVE to share our story. Become a member and share your story or just share your story! The public must know and you are the best resource. Don’t be scared to start up a conversation with the person picking out their produce next to you at the grocery store. A great way to start is simply… "Is that California Grown?"
Don’t fear, help is here. The California Department of Food and Agriculture has secured multiple awareness programs for the farmer. Listed below are a few programs and ideas from several county agencies to help heighten awareness: The Animal Care (AC) Program coordinates departmental activities related to the responsible care and use of domestic farm animals in California. The goals of the AC Program include: • Maintaining knowledge and expertise in AC–related issues
Remember our overarching goal is to provide the public with correct information around production agriculture. They then can make an informed decision.
• Establishing working relationships among stakeholders • Providing education and training through outreach activities
Keep talking, share your story!
• Serving as a resource to the legislature, industry, and the public

Arizona National Livestock Show Announces New Changes Phoenix, AZ - The Arizona National Livestock Show is adding a National Prospect Steer Show to be held December 28, 2010 and also expanding the Junior Heifer Show and Sun Classic Heifer Show to allow the entry of registered heifers that are less than 75% purebred. The Arizona National Livestock Show runs December 28, 2010 through January 1, 2011 at the Arizona State Fairgrounds.
Registered Percentage Heifers will be eligible to enter the Arizona National Sun Classic Heifer Show and Junior Heifer Show beginning this year. This change will allow MaineTainers, Chi-Angus, Chi-Maine, Lim-Flex and other lower percentage heifers to enter. The Open Breeding Cattle Show will still require animals be at least 75% purebred.
The new National Junior Prospect Steer Show will be open to out of state exhibitors. Arizona exhibitors would be eligible to enter both the Arizona Prospect Steer Show and the National Junior Prospect Steer Show. The National Prospect Steer entry deadline is October 31. This Show is limited to steers owned and exhibited by 4-H and FFA members. Exhibitors may enter a maximum of two steers in the National Prospect Steer Show. Steers entered in the Junior Market Steer Show or the Feeder Steer Show may not enter the Prospect Steer Shows.
The Premium Book rules and entry forms will be available online the end of July. Visit www.anls.org for rules, regulations and show schedule. The Arizona National Livestock Show, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public about the significance of agriculture and livestock through the presentation of a premier livestock show. For more information, visit www.anls.org, or call the Arizona National office at (602) 258-8568.

FOR THE EXTRA EDGE TO REACH THE WINNER’S CIRCLE MoorMan’sÂŽ ShowTecÂŽ Show Prep for Swine is a unique complete feed designed specifically for feeding to exhibition swine the night before and the day of a show. Show Prep combines essential nutrients and components needed and desired for an all-in-one show feed formulated for feeding to finished show pigs during show time. Show Prep provides the components necessary to keep show pigs hydrated while enhancing fill and expression. FEATURES • One 5-lb bag provides two meals (2.5 lb per meal)—one meal the night before exhibition and the next meal on show day (Feeding rate may be adjusted to ďŹ t speciďŹ c situations). • All-in-one product eliminates the need for additional top-dress products. • Provides ADM patent-pending products: Energy Burst™—a combination of modified starches, which provide needed energy. Research has also shown the use of modified starches helps maintain osmolarity which has a positive impact on hydration. you notes from kids all across the United States that I have had an opportunity to play a role in their livestock careers. It may not seem like a big deal, but it really is, don’t miss this opportunity.
As State Fair time rolls around it brings to a conclusion a number of things. For some it is simply the end of another project year, for others it may mean the end of a 4-H/FFA career. For others it may mean the beginning of a college career and that first time of living away from home. For some it means the opportunity to begin to plan next year’s livestock project. Regardless of your situation, as your project wraps up this year I encourage you to reflect back on the year and consider the following:
Share your success! Whether you believe it or not you have been looked up to by some younger member. Mentor someone. Help them become all they can be. What a wonderful opportunity you have to pass on some of your experiences in the livestock program. I guarantee someone in your showing career has provided you with insight and wisdom about various situations. By your sharing that information, not only will that assist that young person, but you will help mold their lives and likewise make their project more successful. * * * As I write this article I am filled with a note of sadness and yet am excited about the future. This will be my last article for the Pacific Showcase and likewise when I walk out of the show-ring at the North American in November, I will have judged my last livestock show. My wife, Alice, and I have accepted the call to go into full-time foreign mission work. We will be donating our talents and skills to aid people who have been unreached or are less
What were your goals for 2010? Did you achieve your goals? Did you set your goals too high and as a result make them too difficult to attain? Or perhaps did you set your goals too low and likewise not challenge yourself enough to go the extra mile or to spend those extra few hours in the barn that would have made your project more successful? I challenge you to think about all those missed opportunities when perhaps you slept in on many mornings or perhaps you sat in front of the TV or the “playstation” rather than spending that time working with your project. As you look back, do you wish you had taken that extra time in getting that goat to brace or to stand with his head just so or his topline straighter? Would those few extra hours over the summer have made a difference?

The important part about reflecting back on your year is that it gives you an opportunity to see what might have been and then to make changes for 2011. Making just a few changes can mean the difference between being “just a participant” and taking home the banner. Additionally reflecting back gives you an opportunity to remember those life-lessons that you have learned this year. I truly believe that every experience that we undertake teaches a lesson and that when we learn from those experiences we emerge a better and stronger person because of that opportunity. I also firmly believe that we should take every opportunity to further our knowledge about our project. The more informed and the more knowledgeable we become about our livestock, the more competitive we make ourselves.

Did you give thanks to all those who helped you along the way this year? Dad, mom, granddad, grandma, brother, sister, friend, whoever. Think about the time, money, etc. they all have invested in your program. A thank you, a card or more importantly a big hug around the neck will mean the world to them! Also remember your 4-H leader, your ag teacher or the many others that play a role in your project. They spend the time with you because they care about you and want to see you succeed. If this happens to be your graduating year, I encourage you to spend a little extra time thanking these folks I’ve just mentioned. One of my greatest thrills each year is getting graduation announcements and thank august/september 2010

Vitamin E and Selenium: Managing increasing dietary cost! By Steve Elliot, Alltech
more bio-available than inorganic selenium and therefore can be included at a lower rate.
Vitamin E has been recognized as an essential nutrient for growth and health of all species of animals. You can manage your Vitamin E levels by being constantly aware of the antioxidant status present. Antioxidants are needed by the body to protect it from oxidative stress caused at the cellular level. By building strong antioxidant mechanisms, the animal is well equipped to handle environmental stressors and perform to its full potential.
In addition, research also shows advantages in herd health and production, as well as reproductive health (increase conception rates, decrease incidences of retained placenta’s, cystic ovaries and metritis) and calf viability with herds using Sel-Plex. In a recent study at Texas Tech University, researchers studied the effects of Vitamin E level and selenium supplement form on performance and carcass characteristics of 96 Angus crossbred steers. Two sources of dietary selenium, sodium selenite and organic selenium (Sel-Plex) were added at 0.3 mg Se/kg and three levels of Vitamin E were evaluated over a 103-day finishing period.
The diverse roles of Vitamin E are due to its involvement in nutritional-related muscle diseases, hormone manufacturing and immune response. In recent years, Vitamin E has shown more significance in cattle diets. For example, supplementing highly stressed calves with 150 to 300 international units (I.U.) of Vitamin E daily during the receiving period has shown to been beneficial. Vitamin E has also show a substantial increase in shelf life of fresh beef when fed at 500 I.U. per day for the last 100 days before slaughter.
The steers given organic selenium showed improvements in performance measurements during the first 56 days of the finishing study. Supplementation of feedlot steers with inorganic selenium increased longissimus muscle while organic selenium and low levels of Vitamin E increased the percentage of kidney, pelvic and heart fat. Lightness of lean muscle of steaks aged 7, 14, and 35 days was improved with 50 percent less Vitamin E when organic selenium was added to the diet. Taste appeal of steaks, as indicated by beef flavor and flavor intensity, was improved by the addition of organic selenium as well. While organic selenium enhanced performance during the receiving and growing periods only, the researchers found that it may be beneficial to include organic selenium throughout the entire feeding period due to increased consumer acceptability of meat products.
One way to manage this cost situation and retain the benefits of Vitamin E is by ensuring adequate selenium supplementation. There is a nutritional association between Vitamin E and selenium. Both of these antioxidants are essential to maintain and support the immune system, as well as for cell survival and integrity. Providing selenium in the form of organic selenium (Sel-Plex® from Alltech®), which has antioxidant properties, compared to the inorganic form of selenium, (sodium selenite) a pro-oxidant, can be more beneficial. Offering selenium to cows in the most bioavailable form, assures there is more effective recycling of Vitamin E. If Vitamin E is recycled effectively within the body, it can be included at lower levels and still maintain high antioxidant protection. Studies have shown that this can be done by replacing inorganic selenium with Sel-Plex.
Vitamin E has proven to be an essential component of beef cattle nutrition as it works to support the immune response of the animal. With the rising cost of Vitamin E, many producers are looking for some help in maintaining their herd’s nutrition status and keeping costs down. By using an organic selenium source such as Sel-Plex, lower levels of Vitamin E can be incorporated into the diet, thus potentially lowering cost, while still maintaining high antioxidant properties.
Sel-Plex can easily be incorporated at full replacement into the ration for merely a couple of cents per cow day. Besides potential savings with more efficient use of Vitamin E, you can also save money with Sel-Plex as it is

insight and wisdom into the wonderful world of showing goats.
fortunate than us. With that in mind, just as I have addressed above, I have some thank you’s to hand out:
In conclusion I refer you to my life verse from the Bible and ask that you always keep these words in your heart…
-- To Heidi, it has been my true honor to write for your publication the last few years. Your friendship, smile and intoxicating laugh will be carried with us regardless of where the Lord leads us in our next journey.
He gives strength to the weary and strengthens the powerless. Youths may faint and grow weary, and young men stumble and fall,
-- To all my faithful readers and friends we have met over the years through phone calls or judging on the west coast. I thank you for all the precious memories! I will not soon forget all those wonderful experiences judging across your great state of California. More importantly, I will never forget the wonderful young people that I have met over the years. Your drive, attitude and dedication to the youth livestock program has always impressed me and I am comfortable that there is nothing any of you can not achieve if you set your goals and work toward them as you have with your livestock projects.
But those who trust in the Lord will renew their strength; They will soar on wings like eagles; They will run and not grow weary; They will walk and not faint. (Isaiah 40:29-31)
As someone new takes over the authorship of the goat articles, I encourage you to support them just as you have me over the last years. I am comfortable that whoever takes over these reins will be more capable than I and will be able to provide you with new
May God always richly bless you and may all your dreams come true!
