FROM THE
EDITOR
Never give up hope! It has been too dry for too long here in California. It’s almost the “new normal” after several years of drought. It seems like the brown hills will never change to another color and to add to that scenario, we had a pretty good size fire just over the hill from us last month. We could see flames, and ashes fell like crazy around us. Helicopters and water planes were zooming overhead as they scooped water from the closest ponds and reservoirs. I know many throughout the west have faced the same situation over and over again. It’s pretty scary – BUT THERE IS HOPE! We got rain – inches and inches of rain! Filled the pond behind the house and the creeks were running! The hillsides are changing color! GREEN! Yahoo! And we will sure take whatever comes our way!
P.O. Box 41430 • San Jose, CA 95160 (408) 888-2503 • Fax (408) 776-9811 Publisher & Managing Editor: Heidi Beljean — (408) 888-2503 Email: pacshow@earthlink.net Production Manager & Art Director: William Crump — (662) 305-5434 Email: pacificshowcase@gmail.com
It may not mean the drought is over, but we have all developed better water conservation methods and it all helps. So, on a positive note, I am excited because I really enjoy the Fall and Winter season. The shorter days and cooler nights, changing colors on the trees along our country road and in the hills around us, baking and getting ready for Christmas. This is my favorite time of year. Thanksgiving and Christmas are for me a time to give Thanks for my many blessings, to reflect on the past year, and to spend time with my family. It is a time to slow down (a little bit!) and to get ready for the New Year. As much as I love the holiday season, once it’s over, I am ready for spring to arrive and the promise it holds for the next amazing 12 months. The cycle continues and rejuvenates us so we can take on the tasks and challenges that lie ahead.

I am sure many of you feel the same way. As you have completed the show projects you began many months ago, you are now searching for the next new recruits for the show barn. The thrill of the hunt is so exciting! County fairs are over and it is time to get out and select those new prospects! Be sure to take some time to plan so you come home with the ones you really want. Check out ads, social media, websites, and get on the phone with breeders who have something you might be interested in. Animal costs and feed costs are high so this venture is a big investment in both dollars and time. Use resources to your advantage so when you do go to a sale or to a ranch or breeder, you are prepared and your visit is successful.
Reproductions or other use of this magazine in whole or part of the contents without written permission of the editor is prohibited. Pacific Showcase welcomes readers contributions. Articles of interest, show results, sale results, and calendar dates are welcome and will be printed on space available. To have articles or pictures returned, include a stamped, selfaddressed envelope. Send all submissions to address above. Pacific Showcase is published bimonthly. It is mailed first class and third class bulk mail at Morgan Hill, California. Postmaster: send address changes to Pacific Showcase, P.O. Box 41430, San Jose, CA 95160. Subscriptions: (Bulk mail - one year - $25; two years - $45.) (First class - one year - $35; two years $65.) For processing of new subscriptions - please allow 4 to 6 weeks. For address corrections, send current mailing label along with new address to Pacific Showcase.
One thing that makes raising animals more fun is having the opportunities in addition to your county fairs, to compete and exhibit in different settings and under many different judges. California is so fortunate to have so many jackpots for all species. It takes many dedicated volunteers and show staff to step up and put on an event for youth exhibitors to participate in. From January to December, there is something for everyone. In this issue be sure to check out the Jackpot Breakdown. Keep the section as a great reference list. Each show listing includes dates, location, species, and contact information. We have done our best to verify everything, but be sure to check out each issue of this magazine for any updates or changes. It’s also a good idea to contact the shows and get on their mailing lists, or like them on Facebook or Instagram or Twitter.
Time to Plan Ahead! The January/February 2017 Issue is our

It has been 17 years since the CJLA was officially organized and the first members joined and shows became sanctioned. We are truly grateful for the support from so many that have kept us going all this time. The Award Banquet is a time to recognize the efforts and accomplishments of all our members and we rely on the generosity of all our donors to help us reach our goals. The 2016 Banquet will be held on February 17, 2017, in Paso Robles during the Western Bonanza Junior Livestock Show. If you would like to donate to the CJLA, contact me and I would love to discuss how we can work together. If you would like to donate an item, we have a fundraising auction during the banquet and always love to include unique items. There are lots of ways to help out and support this great group of kids – I look forward to hearing from you! Earlier, I mentioned the people who put on jackpot shows. It takes many dedicated people to put on educational events for our youth. Be sure to say Thank You to everyone you meet who plays a part in getting these things accomplished. Most times their only reward is your appreciation. Before I close, I also want to say how Thankful I am to be able to put out this magazine for our subscribers. It has been many years since Pacific Showcase was just an idea that I was able to turn into an actual publication that serves so many. It never gets old and I am continually looking for ways to offer you what you want to see. If you have any thoughts or comments, I would love to hear from you. As always, let us know if you move so we can update your address and you don’t miss an issue. Send in those amazing Hot Shot photos, and check out our special features in each issue. Happy Holidays to everyone – and we will visit again in 2017!
