Hair Dye

• Thicker formula that produces a brighter black, deeper down to the roots. • Longer holding power with a proven, no burn formula. • Comparisions welcomed. STEP 1 ... Mix 4-6 kits equal parts Dye (black bottle) and equal parts Activator (red bottle) into a pump up sprayer, spray bottle or a blower fogger (set spray setting on mist NOT stream). Add a splash of Kleen Sheen if desired. STEP 2 ... Shake Well STEP 3 ... Apply half evenly across the hair coat comb in, and then spray the rest where more is needed. Apply heavier amounts to the more excessive brown areas. STEP 4 ... Leave in for 20-30 min. 35 min MAX (if the temperature is warmer place animal under a fan) Never leave animal under direct sunlight while dye is applied. STEP 5 ... Once time is up rinse entire body until water runs clear. Make sure to get under the tail, belly and between legs these are the sensitive areas. STEP 6 ... Use Vita Hair Volumizer shampoo to remove any solution left behind. Gently scrub entire calf especially the sensitive areas. Then rinse. STEP 7 ... Once animal is blown completely dry use Revive or Revive Lite to condition the hair, maximizing the full brilliant black color of Black Velvet.

FROM THE

EDITOR One of the best things about this time of year is daylight savings! I don’t know about you, but for me those short days that turn dark way too early are just a little depressing! Theoretically we are all supposed to go into some kind of winter hibernation – but who has time for that? I do love fall (Thanksgiving!) and winter (Christmas!!), but after January, I am ready for Spring! And now that we have set the clocks ahead, oh joy! Longer days and more sunshine, just makes you feel good. It brings a renewed sense of purpose and potential to each day, and each task or project.

P.O. Box 41430 • San Jose, CA 95160 (408) 888-2503 • Fax (408) 776-9811 Publisher & Managing Editor: Heidi Beljean — (408) 888-2503 Email: pacshow@earthlink.net

There are other things that come with longer days. It doesn’t seem like that many months ago that kids were starting back to school, and now they are approaching the last few months until school is out for summer break. It’s a busy time of year. Sports are in full swing, big FFA events are going on each weekend and State Conventions are just around the corner, the jackpot season is going full blast, and county fairs are starting up. We all need those extra daylight hours to get everything done! With all the hustle and bustle that comes with this time of year, I hope you will take some for family. We can never get back the hours we missed with those we love and care about and the other stuff will still be there when you get back to it.

As I visit with parents who take their kids to jackpots and fairs, they most often tell me that those events are their family time. They love doing this with their kids, watching them compete, and most of all, spending time with family and friends. Time goes by too fast, so enjoy and treasure those special times.

In this issue, we honor four special people who have made an impact in the livestock industry. Their passing is a deep loss for those who were close, and for those whose lives were enriched for having known them. Whether or not you knew them, they were each an inspiration to many, and will continue to be into the future. They were involved in this industry with a heartfelt belief in its values and future, and I am fortunate to have known each one and to call them my friends! They will be missed.

Reproductions or other use of this magazine in whole or part of the contents without written permission of the editor is prohibited. Pacific Showcase welcomes readers contributions. Articles of interest, show results, sale results, and calendar dates are welcome and will be printed on space available. To have articles or pictures returned, include a stamped, selfaddressed envelope. Send all submissions to address above. Pacific Showcase is published bimonthly. It is mailed first class and third class bulk mail at Morgan Hill, California. Postmaster: send address changes to Pacific Showcase, P.O. Box 41430, San Jose, CA 95160.

As our industry trailblazers leave us, we need to say thank you for showing us the way and for all their hard work to make things better for those who come along. Without those believers and supporters of agriculture, we would not make the strides forward that are needed, and we would not be the strongest, most important, industry in the world.

Subscriptions: (Bulk mail - one year - $25; two years - $45.) (First class - one year - $35; two years $65.) For processing of new subscriptions - please allow 4 to 6 weeks. For address corrections, send current mailing label along with new address to Pacific Showcase.

I know I bring up this subject each year, but it is always an important one! Be a “good sport” and say “thank you.” How you act in front of your peers or out in public is how people will remember you. What you post on social media can come back to haunt you many years down the road. We all like to have fun, but how do you want to be perceived? What impression do you want to leave on those you come into contact with? It is truly a small world. That judge you showed under when you were 12 may be your college coach some day. Were you the kid who shook his hand and was thrilled with whatever color ribbon you won, or are you the kid who cried going out the gate and threw down the halter and ribbon and stormed off? Are you the person who was happy for the one who worked hard and beat you, or do you post nasty comments on your media page? My comments may make you laugh but when you view either behavior in others, what do you think? What impression do you form in your mind? And how many years down the road do you remember what that person did? Now do you see what I mean?

IMPORTANT

CJLA NEWS AND UPDATES! Spring has arrived! Blue skies and green grass are everywhere so be sure to take some time to enjoy it! The show season is in full swing also and many of you have been travelling the highways to compete at the CJLA Sanctioned Shows. This year is promising to be a big one as CJLA memberships have taken a big jump! How exciting is that! To all new members – Welcome! And to all returning members – Welcome back! There is a full slate of shows for everyone to choose from so plan your schedules and load up and go! We are truly thankful for all the great people who continue to put on these jackpots for our youth who love to show. Be sure to take the time to say thank you to them when you are at the show so they also know you appreciate their efforts.

yours! In the next issue of this magazine, we will feature a complete feature on all the award winners and highlights of the banquet. A 2015 Sanctioned Show List and 2015 Rule Handbook has been emailed to all current members. It is also posted on the CJLA website. Please check the website regularly as updates will be posted there. There have been a few revisions in the new Rulebook so read it through and PLEASE PRINT them for your reference!! We provide you with all information and rules by E-mail, posting on the website, and in this magazine article. It is your responsibility to read the information sent to you and to know the CJLA rules. We are here to help so if you don’t understand something or have ANY questions, please contact us. To save on the cost of postage, the majority of our communication will be by E-mail. If you are not receiving anything from CJLA, let us know so we can check or update our records!

I know all of you are looking for the points. Our deadline to join for 2015 is March 31st and we are getting show results in as I write this, so we will post points in April. We do this so the entire membership is accounted for and included and also to get a group of show points totaled. We will email the Points file to members and also post on the CJLA Website as soon as the update is completed.

The major revision in the 2015 Rulebook is in regard to the Heifer Division. Please read the information in this issue. It has also been emailed to 2015 members and posted on the website. We believe this revision will make the heifer division more fair to each heifer breed and for all heifer exhibitors, and will continue to support our California heifer Associations who sponsor the CJLA heifer breed divisions.

February 14th was the date of the CJLA Banquet honoring the 2014 membership. It was a great evening enjoyed by our members, their families, and friends, and our many sponsors and supporters. If you were a 2014 member and were unable to attend the banquet, we want to be sure you get your packets (CJLA t-shirt and goodies), and any awards you won. We are asking for a small donation of $5.00 to help with postage and mailing costs. Send to CJLA, P.O. Box 41430, San Jose, CA 95160 - along with the member name and mailing address and we will ship your items to you. We gave out some really awesome awards and EVERYONE wants a CJLA t-shirt, so be sure to get

Questions? Emails can sent to cjlainfo@yahoo.com or through the CJLA website: www.cjlainfo.com Heidi Beljean at 408-888-2503 or pacshow@earthlink.net (CJLA info, memberships, & sponsorships) Mary Ann Bush at 831-905-5665 or cjlainfo@yahoo.com (CJLA Rules & Points)

CJLA ANNOUNCES REVISION TO HEIFER DIVISION RULES – BEGININNING JANUARY 2015 The CJLA announces a revision to the CJLA Heifer Division. We have received approval from the California Jr. Associations which support our current heifer divisions – Angus, Hereford, Shorthorn, Maine Anjou, Charolais, and Limousin, to implement this change. Beginning January 1st, 2015, all heifer points will be counted in the breed division they qualify for (i.e., Angus heifers will earn points in the Angus Division, Hereford heifers will earn points in the Hereford Division, etc.) Heifers that do not qualify for one of the above heifer divisions, and fall into our AOB Division, will have their points count in the AOB Division. THERE WILL BE NO TRANSFERRING OF POINTS FROM ANY DIVISION INTO THE AOB DIVISION!

Therefore, in order to promote membership in the (Angus, Hereford, Shorthorn, Maine Anjou, Charolais and Limousin) California Junior Associations, we will be awarding BONUS POINTS to those CJLA members who also join and pay current year dues to the Calif. Jr. Heifer Assn. they qualify for. These bonus points will only count in that heifer division – not for Overall points. (This is the same as for heifer fielddays – points only count in division –not for Overall standings). Bonus points will only be applied to a members points if they are actually showing that breed in CJLA sanctioned shows. A CJLA member has the choice to join as many California Junior Heifer Associations as they want, however, Bonus Points will only be awarded once a member exhibits an animal in those breed divisions. In other words, if you join an Association and never exhibit that breed of heifer in a CJLA show, then the bonus points will not be awarded.

Through 2014, CJLA rules had stated that in order to earn points in one of our heifer divisions (Angus, Hereford, Shorthorn, Maine Anjou, Charolais & Limousin); members must also pay their dues and join that respective California Jr. Heifer Association. If those dues were not paid, then points earned would go into the AOB division. While many have paid those state assn. dues, we have always had some who missed out and some who chose not to. This resulted in confusion, disappointment, and at times, complaints. The dilemma was in coming up with a way to fix it and still support those heifer associations who support CJLA and sponsor their respective breed divisions. We also wanted to provide a fair division for the heifers who only qualify as AOB’s under CJLA Rules by not allowing other breeds to choose for all their points to count in the AOB division.

Bonus points will be awarded in two phases. If state assn. dues are paid by May 31st of the current year, 15 bonus points will be awarded. If state assn. dues are paid from June 1st thru December 31st, then 10 bonus points will be awarded. WE ARE ENCOURAGING CJLA HEIFER EXHIBITORS TO JOIN THEIR CALIF. HEIFER ASSOCIATIONS!! The two phases of bonus points will give everyone the opportunity to add extra points to their division total and will not exclude a member who potentially decides to show a certain heifer breed later in the year. Complete 2015 Rules are posted on the CJLA website – www.cjlainfo. com. You will also find the breed association membership forms, a list of Association contacts and information on our website. You will need to pay Association dues directly to them. They will then notify us of your paid membership.

CJLA is very fortunate to have the support of these California Jr. Heifer Associations and we strongly encourage members showing one of those heifer breeds to also support the association of the breed they have chosen to exhibit. MARCH/APRIL 2015

Since 44 Farms began using Concept•Aid® mineral, we not only have been able to increase breed back percentage on our females, but we are seeing stronger fertility results on our bulls. I also have never used a more maintenance free mineral. The cattle eat it and it is very moisture tolerant.

Dominant Motor Performance READ BELOW HOW. • Sullivan’s TURBO America’s #1 Livestock Fan • Nothing matches the Turbo for Air POWER! The Turbo pushes air 5,560 feet per minute at an incredible 1,740 RPMs and an industry leading 8,453 CFM’s. This is 22% faster and harder than the other livestock fans. Keeping your livestock cool depends on providing a push of high velocity air power to your animal. • The Dominant Motor Performance ... We have over-engineered the Turbo motor for added performance. The premium Nidec-Emerson 1/2 HP sealed ball bearing motor features a very important component, a 10% larger internal stator and rotor ‘stack’ for more horse power than standard 1/2 HP motors. This extra ‘stack’ powers it to run faster than any other livestock fan that we know of. As an added benefit, the Turbo motor runs 11% cooler than competitors 1/2 HP motors, this allows cooler air output from the Turbo.

Applications online at www.sullivansupply DUE March 15, 2015.

• The Problem-Free Guard... Built for Longevity! Constructed of extra-thick 7 gauge and 11 gauge steel wire that is formed into a continuous onepiece spiral formation for reinforced strength that is not provided in other fans. This engineered craftsmanship has proven to create strength that is virtually crush-proof! Baked-on powder coat treatment for corrosion resistance and a cleaner appearance. No other fan guard withstands the rigors of the show road like the Turbo.

Winners will be announced on The Pulse April 15, 2015.

Angus Industry News and Notes

Scholarships Available to Angus Youth

mjenkins@angusfoundation.org. The American Angus Auxiliary awards scholarships to the top five male and top five female applicants selected from finalists chosen in the applicant’s home state. Each state auxiliary is eligible to submit one male and one female application to the national contest. The winners will be announced during the 2015 NJAS closing ceremonies.

May 1 deadline for Angus Foundation and American Angus Auxiliary application. The American Angus Association® strives to provide students with opportunities to benefit themselves and the future of the cattle business. Through scholarship programs hosted by the Angus Foundation and the American Angus Auxiliary, Angus youth passionate about the beef industry are provided financial support to further their education.

In addition, the five finalists for the Miss American Angus contest are selected from the top national female applicants. The application for American Angus Auxiliary Scholarships is now available online. Interested junior Angus members, who are high school seniors, may download the application, access directions and general information at www. angusauxiliary.com/scholarships/index.html.

Current high school seniors and college students should take note of the deadlines and details for each scholarship program listed below. The Angus Foundation offers general scholarships to students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in higher education. Eligible Angus youth meeting the qualifications for the Angus Foundation’s 2015 Undergraduate and Graduate Scholarship Programs will be considered by the Angus Foundation’s Scholarship Selection Committee. As in past years, other specific and special criteria scholarships administered by the Angus Foundation will also be available. Scholarship recipients will be recognized during the 2015 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) in Tulsa, Okla.

Applications from the state contact must be postmarked by May 1. For specific state and local Auxiliary scholarship deadlines and information, visit the Auxiliary website, or contact your state or regional Angus Auxiliary. Additional questions about the American Angus Auxiliary scholarships can be directed to Lynne Hinrichsen, American Angus Auxiliary president, atrlangus@bluevalley.net.

NJAA Welcomes Extended Intern, Jena Lee Wagner

The Allied Angus Breeders Scholarship, also through the Angus Foundation, will provide $1,000 to three students who use Angus genetics in their seedstock or commercial operation. Applicants must be enrolled in a junior college, four-year college/university or other accredited institution for fall 2015. They can be an entering freshman or a continuing student in any undergraduate program. Applicant or the applicant’s parents/guardians must have transferred or been transferred a registration paper in the last 36 months (on or after May 1, 2012).

Wagner joins the team in Saint Joseph, Mo., assisting with nationwide Angus events.
Jena Lee Wagner of Billings, Mont., is well versed in junior activities through the American Angus Association®. She has been involved with the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) for more than ten years, and is bringing that experience back to the Association by serving as the extended intern in the Events and Education Department.

Applications for all Angus Foundation scholarships must be postmarked by May 1, and mailed to Milford Jenkins, American Angus Association, 3201 Frederick Ave., Saint Joseph, MO 64506.

Wagner’s role officially began at the 2015 National Western Stock Show (NWSS), and she will continue to be involved in planning activities and events until mid-August. A former National Junior Angus Board (NJAB) member, Wagner says she looks forward to traveling and getting to know Angus members nationwide.

Applications are available online at www.angusfoundation.org. For more information, contact Jenkins, Angus Foundation president, at 816-383-5100 or

“It’s such a tremendous opportunity to have an internship like this that involves traveling the country,” Wagner says. “I would never get to see these places on my own, and what’s even better is that I get to watch the NJAA members enjoy all these experiences, as well. Seeing them excited about Angus cattle and new friends is really the best part.”

Informative Information coming at you! By... 1.

During her eight-month internship, Wagner will assist with planning Association-sponsored shows and conferences, attend several events throughout the country, and play a key role in preparations for the 2015 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) in Tulsa, Okla.

“Raising the Bar conferences give youth a rare opportunity to tour a college town, the campus and have one-on-one time with professors to find out what their programs are all about,” Wagner says. “It’s an experience a lot of people may not have when visiting universities.”

Wagner attends Montana State University where she is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in communications, with a minor in graphic design and marketing. “Because of her understanding and enthusiasm for the National Junior Angus Association and its activities, we are fortunate to have Jena on board,” says Jaclyn Upperman, director of events and education. “She has a keen eye for detail, and will help us continue to present industry-leading programs for our youth and adult members.”

Phoenix, AZ - The 67th Annual Arizona National held December 26-31, 2014 established a record breaking year. Records are set to be broken and with the hard work of many, several sales, shows and events exceeded expectations. Starting with the Junior Market Auction, buyers set a standard that shattered previous auction totals with a $252,796.50 all time record gross on 124 lots. Other sales now in the record books include the Arizona Ranch Replacement Heifer Sale which had a record breaking $113, 625.00 total with an average of $2,525.00 on 45 head. The First Annual Grand Canyon Classic Gilt Sale featured 28 champion level sale lots totaling $69,400.00, with an average of $2,478.57. The high selling Gilt went for an astounding $15,000.00. Gilts in the sale were the "Best of the Best" females competing in our new National Affiliate Swine show which drew entries from 18 states.

As an added bonus, with all the new programs and renewed interest in the livestock show, we also saw an 18% increase in Junior Exhibitors over last year. We are particularly pleased with membership growth in the organization and although most all membership categories saw increases this past year, the all new Youth Experience Membership offering attracted an unprecedented 282 youth members under the age of 23. As we look to “Growing the Future”, this demographic is our greatest opportunity and America’s best investment. The Arizona National is experiencing growth and these young leaders will provide the roadmap for tomorrow.

This year saw entries increase across the board in all show rings with brisk interest specifically in the Pedigree Barrow Show, Market Cattle Show, Market Lamb and Goat shows, Junior Heifer Division and Open Cattle competitions. Junior Heifers up 20% Junior Market Swine up 38% Junior Market Sheep up 2%

The Arizona National Livestock Show, Inc. is a non-profit organization with a mission of “Growing the Future.” For more information call the Arizona National office at (602) 258-8568 or visit www.anls.org.

“Thank you” – those two simple words make a difference. Just to know you were appreciated – that someone noticed your efforts, makes all the effort, hard work, concern, help, or whatever it was, all worthwhile. Those who put on jackpots, field days, seminars, even county fairs – most are volunteers. They cared enough to take their time to do it for you! A lot of hard work goes into these events, and they don’t like things to go wrong any more than you do. But if you scream, yell, cuss, or throw a tantrum, it doesn’t help the situation. They want to make sure everything runs smoothly. They don’t want upset parents and exhibitors. Think before you react – before you open your mouth to complain. If you come to them with a problem, be prepared with a helpful suggestion or solution to get it resolved. Again, appreciation and thank you goes along way. Good feelings get a lot more good stuff done!

Look for show details, rules and registration form in the next issue of Pacific Showcase!

I hope you enjoy this issue of the magazine. I find it rewarding each issue to bring you news and informative articles that you can use or learn from. We love to feature our youth and want to get your photos and news so we can share with our subscribers in each issue. Don’t forget to let us know if you move – magazines are returned to us very slowly by the post office. You can miss several issues if you don’t notify us of your new address. If there is anything we can help you with, from advertising to events, please contact us and we can help you out.
