Fitting Tip From The Pro’s - Todd Caldwell When fitting a leg there is one product line that stands out. Sullivan’s Prime Time and Tail Adhesive. They dry completely and leave the hair crisp so it clips off with ease.
Sullivan adhesives perform in all types of weather - winter, spring, summer or fall. These products will not wilt or fall down in the humidity. We proceed with the Sullivan’s Ultra White Touch-Up as a leg builder and use Black Finisher as our final cover-up. Their level of performance and real hair-like
appearance is unmatched. And Sullivan Touch-Ups will not melt your adhesive. June/July 2011

from the
editor The heat is here – and if you are like me, I am not ready for it! This year the weather went straight from winter to summer, with not many spring days in between. I drove to Reno the first of June for the sheep event, and almost had to chain up as a late storm bringing snow and rain blasted through the mountains. And then, we have had so many cool days, I was beginning to think I would never get out my summer clothes! Watch what I wish for, because once it got here - summer arrived to stay! Now I am looking for ways to keep cool, and I am sure you are doing the same. Those of us with animals, also need to keep a close eye on them to make sure they have shade, water and do not get heat stressed. Take the time each morning and evening to make sure your animals are going to be comfortable for the day. If you are away from home during the day, it is especially important to have things set up for yours animals comfort. If you are lucky enough to be home during the day, check on them several times to be sure all is okay – remember, if you are noticing the heat, your animals are feeling it too and rely on you to take care of them!

Every year in this issue, we run the Graduates section. It always makes me very aware of how fast time goes by, when I see these kids in a graduation photo and I remember seeing them as 9 year olds just starting out in the show ring. Now here they are, at the end of their junior show career and ready to take the next leap in life – going on to college or starting a job. I always enjoy watching everyone throughout the years growing up, learning and achieving goals. Good luck to each of you as your pursue your dreams! Even if your life takes you away from animals and agriculture for awhile, it will always be a part of who you are and something you will fall back on in more ways than you can imagine. Maybe you will end up with a career in the agriculture industry, or continue to raise animals, help out at your county fair, work with young kids just starting out showing, or someday your own children will tell you they want to be in 4-H/FFA and show - however it works out, we will see you again at ringside!

Speaking of county fairs, budget cuts in many states are affecting their fairs. You need to contact your state governments and find out what is going on. Public involvement is needed at all levels to keep us all from losing our fairs. As an example of what has already happened – the Nevada State Fair has been cancelled this year because of lack of funds. Every venue has its specific funding and operating plan, you can find out how your fair works and be prepared to help where needed. Don’t let your regional, county and state fairs be cancelled. We all need to stand up and fight for what we believe in!
Pacific Showcase is published bimonthly. It is mailed first class and third class bulk mail at Morgan Hill, California. Postmaster: send address changes to Pacific Showcase, P.O. Box 41430, San Jose, CA 95160. Subscriptions: (Bulk mail - one year - $25; two years - $45.) (First class - one year - $35; two years $65.) For processing of new subscriptions - please allow 4 to 6 weeks. For address corrections, send current mailing label along with new address to Pacific Showcase.
It does take a lot to keep an organization going. The CJLA continually works to find funding and sponsors for its program. All money brought in goes directly back to the junior members through the award program. This summer we will have three raffles we will be selling tickets for. Check out the CJLA website (www.cjlainfo.com) the middle of July for what we will be raffling off and how to get your tickets! To give some clues as to what you could win – think about this! A half beef and freezer; an ATV; and an ultimate Western Bonanza/ CJLA Banquet weekend package! You will definitely want to get in the drawings for any of these items!
Time to Plan Ahead! The August/September Issue is our
Western State Fairs Issue
State Fair is the big event of the summer, but county fairs are in full swing as well. Wherever you choose to compete with your projects, be sure to try your hardest and do the best job you can do. Do this for yourself, so you can be proud of what you have accomplished. Do it also to exhibit to the public a positive display of animal husbandry, good sportsmanship, leadership, and responsibility.

If you have attended more than eight shows, only your top eight are listed here. As you compete at more shows, I continue to drop the lowest points and refigure your top eight show points. I often get asked how someone can have so many points and someone else have less. Please be aware of the fact that one person who has gone to eight shows , will have eight sets of points figured in, while someone else may not have attended eight shows yet, or may have gone to shows that are not yet recorded. In other words, you may be looking at one score of eight shows and another of five or six shows. For this reason, it is impossible to compare points between members unless you are sure they each have the same number of shows recorded. If you have any questions about your points, please contact me. Disaster Relief Fund Established for Elliott During the recent rash of tornadoes that hit many areas of the country, one that passed through Oklahoma in May directly hit a well known sheep family. Clay and Lilli Elliott of El Reno lost their entire farm including their home, barns, equipment, and many of their sheep. This is a devastating loss, but fortunately, the family was all safe. Clay is the livestock judging coach at Redlands Community College and a fund has been set up for the family through the college. Notice Of Change To Cjla Steer Division Effective Beginning 2012 Show Year in the Black or All Other Color Steer Division. Points will not be moved into the English Steer Division at a later date. Please be sure to visit with the breeder of your animal prior to purchase regarding obtaining registration papers.
The CJLA Steer Division is divided into 3 categories for the purpose of awarding points. These divisions are: English; Black/Black-X; and All Other Color. The purpose of offering these three steer divisions has been for the awarding of points and to allow entries to be sorted into similar groups for fair evaluation and judging.
The 2012 requirements for entry into the Black/Black-cross and All Other Color steer divisions will remain the same as currently stated in the 2011 Rules Book.
Due to feedback from shows, exhibitors, and cattle breeders, the CJLA has re-evaluated the requirements for entries into the English Steer Division. Up to this point, the CJLA rules stated that English steers (Angus, Hereford, and Shorthorn) must be purebred, meet the respective breed association requirements for registration, and show visible characteristics for that breed. CJLA did not require any additional proof of purebred pedigree. Unfortunately, there have been too many instances where steers of questionable parentage have been entered as purebred and allowed to compete in this division. This has caused several complaints and a general feeling of unfairness in this division. The CJLA is now taking steps to prevent incorrect entries and to return the English division to its’ original intent, which was to provide a division for English steers of similar type and kind to compete together.
Black/Black-X Division: All black and black-cross steers compete in this division. Black steers with white markings and black or blue roan steers must also compete in this division. All Other Color Steer Division: This division is open to yellow, red, grey, buff, cream and white steers, or any combination of these colors. Black and white steers, black/blue roan steers, and any steers with black markings are not eligible for this division and must compete in the Black/Black-cross division. REVIEW OF CHANGES TO ENGLISH STEER DIVISION BEGINNING JANUARY 2012. 1. English steers (Angus, Hereford, Shorthorn) must be registered with the respective national breed association in order to earn points in the CJLA English Steer Division.
Beginning with 2012, all ENGLISH STEERS (Angus, Hereford & Shorthorn) WILL BE REQUIRED TO HAVE REGISTRATION PAPERS VERIFYING PARENTAGE AND PEDIGREE in order to be shown in the English Steer Division at any CJLA sanctioned steer show. These registration papers must be official purebred steer registration papers from the respective national breed association. If you are showing an English Steer (Angus, Hereford or Shorthorn) in 2012, you must have your animal registered in YOUR NAME prior to the first show you exhibit that animal at. In addition, these papers must be presented to show management prior to exhibition for verification at all CJLA shows. If registration papers are not verified by show management prior to exhibition, those entries must be shown
2. English steers MUST be registered in the youth exhibitor’s name, with the exhibitors name listed on the registration paper as current owner. 3. Registration papers for English Steers must be presented to show management prior to exhibition. 4. English Steer entries not providing valid registration papers must be shown in the Black or All Other Color Division. Any points earned will not be moved into the English Steer Division at a later time. Any further questions may be directed to the CJLA.

Letter from Big Beefy Dude: Hey Ma! got to tell her all about the 600+ feeding trials and how well Bio-Mos works. I got to show off my knowledge of how it promotes good bacteria so that you don’t have those off feed days. Just because I have a lot of muscles doesn’t mean that I don’t read my feed tags. We even talked about how it works to improve my growth and development . I told her that my human friend gets all excited about my performance. I’ve noticed that I don’t need medicine as often as some of my friends. I was just going to tell her all about the way it works when I had to get ready for the next competition. I guess I’ll just save that for the next time I see her. I’ll just do a bit more research so I can really impress her. As I was walking away I heard her ask the other cute heifer about me! WOW, all due to our conversation on BioMos and gut health.
Sorry I haven’t had a chance to write much, but I’ve been very busy winning shows. My new human friend has me going all over for Jackpot shows! I’ve just been having so much fun. I’ve been feeling great, and it shows. No upset stomachs for me! I use my Bio-Mos® daily, and I make sure my human friend knows this is a valuable ingredient in my feed. From the time I was just a little bitty guy nursing, you made sure that my natural defenses were working at their maximum performance. I am glad that you made sure that it was in my diet, Ma. Big guys can never be too careful with our food these days. Like you always say, “Eat right and on time with plenty of fresh clean water, and there will be no intestinal problems for this big beefy dude.” Last Saturday, I actually got to be right next to a pretty little heifer. She sure was a cute little thing. What a great conversation we had. I found out that she had intestinal problems after the last big show she went to; the vet was called and everything. They blamed it on her stressful environment and inconsistent feeding times. She has never even heard of Bio-Mos®! Can you believe it? You have been making sure that I get mine forever. Bio-Mos has been in animal feeds for more than 18 years. I june/july 2011
