editor It was recently mentioned to me that there are approximately 30 days left until the end of the school year. 30 DAYS!! Wasn’t it just Christmas? Or just January and the first jackpot of 2012? Or just Valentine’s Day? Honestly, someone needs to tell me where the time has gone! I do know it wasn’t that long ago that we held our annual CJLA Award Banquet in Paso Robles. That date was February 18th, and in this issue we have the complete highlights of the evening. A big Congratulations to all the Winners and to everyone who participated in the CJLA in 2011!
P.O. Box 41430 • San Jose, CA 95160 (408) 776-7611 • Fax (408) 776-9811 Publisher & Managing Editor: Heidi Beljean — (408) 888-2503 Email: pacshow@earthlink.net
The Banquet is always a frantic time for us, trying to get everything ready at home, hauling the packed trailer to the venue, and then rushing for a day and a half to get everything decorated and set up. Each year, it all gets done! I know it definitely wouldn’t be possible to accomplish it all, without the help of so many wonderful people who willing to support & help us in any way possible – whether it be monetary, for the auction, awards or showing up to prepare for the banquet. I truly cannot say THANK YOU enough to everyone who pitches in to help make it possible for us to continue doing this year after year. It is a testament to this great industry we are involved in, that with just a phone call or conversation - help is on the way. We are truly blessed to be a part of the agriculture-livestock-youth family!

So….getting back to that countdown to the last day of school! Graduations and summer vacations, county and state fairs, junior nationals and road trips are all on the agenda for the upcoming months. Everyone is preparing and planning for those activities, so if you think summer is for lazy days and down-time, think again! The fast pace is the usual pace these days, so the best way to get everything taken care of, is to plan, plan, plan! And then have Fun!

We recently received some sad news when we heard that Mark Perez of Mission Angus Ranch had passed away. Mark was a great friend, a good man, and a huge supporter of youth activities. He was always there for me whenever I called to ask for his support – he never hesitated to offer his help. Mark definitely believed in the “youth are our future” motto, and was always there to see those kids he knew achieve their goals. I will miss his friendship, and I think a good way to honor his memory is to continue his legacy of helping our youth in agriculture.
Time to Plan Ahead! The June/July Issue is our
California State Fair Issue
I hope you enjoy this issue –there are great articles and information in these pages. And of course, the CJLA Banquet feature where you can see all the winners and highlights of the evening. Don’t forget to let us know if you move so we can keep your magazine coming your way. We are sending more information out by email so be sure we have your email address if you would like to get those news blasts. And as always, send in your hot shots and upcoming events.

about the
cover
Boneso Livestock is excited about the success shown by the first calf crop from Walks on Water. We have had a lot of success locally and nationally with his calves at the National Western, Cal Poly's Western Bonanza and Fresno State's Red Wave Classic, just to mention a few. We think that Walks on Water is a "Changer" and we are very excited about his future in the club calf industry. Semen is available at most major semen distributors and in California can be purchased through Boneso Livestock and Lander Vet Clinic in Turlock, CA. Walks on Water's long line of success stories is just beginning, and he joins a deep group of bulls, including Monopoly and Heat Wave, that have Pacif ic been bred to our top donors and A.I. cows. This is the Show case Maga zine stoutest set of calves to date and we are very excited about their future success, and feel they will be in the Winner's Circle now and for years to come.

Competition and Fun all wrapped up in this show!
Mama BoPeep to Lambie "Pie" Bo Peep: coexist within the digestive system. Stress causes the pH level within the digestive system to fluctuate; forcing the good and bad bugs out of harmony. Stress can be triggered by travel, feed changes, or weather related stressors. Bad bugs challenge the integrity of the gut and the immune system; resulting in days off feed and a reduction in the overall rate of weight gain. Bad bugs multiply much faster than good ones when the pH level changes.
Lambie Pie, I am so glad you got your wish and the pretty little girl in the green jacket took you home; tell me more about your new human friend, it sounds like she is just right for you. Did she spend the first night at your new home checking on you each hour? I remember when I was young, Johnny, my first little boy, almost made a bed for himself in the barn my first night home. I was so worried about being away from Grandma that I kept crying for her. Grandma and I were very close and she taught me so much. She was very persistent that I learn to check my feed bags to make sure
This is why Bio-Mos is in our feed: to support gut integrity, build natural defenses and reinforce the function of the digestive system. Farmer Brown is always talking about reducing travel stress and how important it is to keep up the overall rate of gain. Farmer Brown is so smart and he works so hard to take care of us!
Sel-Plex® and Bio-Mos® were in my feed. It sure helped me during show seasons. You will be traveling a great deal with your new human friend; between shows, jack pots, show camps and fairs; you can’t be too careful with your digestive tract and immune system. All of those activities are very fun but if you don’t take care of yourself and eat right you can become very sick.
That’s why, I guess, using Sel-Plex and Bio-Mos is a family tradition! Lambie Pie, write me soon. I miss you! Baa Baa, Mama Bo Peep.
Last week I overheard Farmer Brown and his feed sales person talking about the importance of good gut health. Did you know that the gut is one of the most important organs in the whole body? It is balanced by good and bad bugs that April/May 2012

Pfizer Animal Health and American Humane Association Conclude First Phase of Study Evaluating the Benefits of Animal-Assisted Therapy for Children Undergoing Cancer Treatment Literature review and site interviews mark the launch of a study that will examine the outcomes of animal-assisted therapy on pediatric cancer patients and their families guide the design of the overall study. Preliminary findings showed that no standard protocol for an animal-assisted therapy session (i.e., length, number and type of participants in each session, session activities, or talking points) seemed to exist at any of the research hospital sites; each animalhandler team went about their work somewhat differently. This finding underlines the need for this study to develop consistent animal-assisted therapy treatment fidelity across sites in order to conduct the type of rigorous research needed in the human-animal interaction field.
Pfizer Animal Health, an international leader in the advancement of animal health, and the American Humane Association, the nation’s leading advocate on behalf of children and animals, announced the completion of the first round of an innovative research study on the benefits of animalassisted therapy (AAT) on pediatric cancer patients and their families. For years, doctors, veterinarians and other caregivers have shared experiences about the healing power that animal-assisted therapy offers children with cancer. However, little hard evidence exists as to whether these claims can be substantiated, under what conditions AAT is most effective, and how, if proven useful, it may best be incorporated into treatment.
The information gathered during this initial phase will serve to inform a scientific study design in order to conduct a pilot trial with three to five pediatric oncology sites across the country. Upon the conclusion of the pilot trial, researchers anticipate the launch of a full clinical trial across multiple sites for 12-18 months. During this time, certified therapy dogs and their handlers will conduct regular animal-assisted therapy sessions with pediatric oncology patients and their families, which will be evaluated by a range of biological, psychological and social measures.
The research study, “Canines and Childhood Cancer: Examining the Effects of Therapy Dogs with Childhood Cancer Patients and their Families,” is a multi-year effort taking place in hospital settings across the U.S. that will examine the specific medical, behavioral, and mental health benefits animal-assisted therapy (AAT) may have for children with cancer and their families. A comprehensive literature review has been completed as a first step, and may be downloaded at: www.CaninesAndChildhoodCancer.org.
“Now we begin the important work of validating and quantifying something that we have observed and felt for years through our own experiences — that interaction with animals can provide beneficial effects for people in need of comfort, encouragement and healing,” said Robin R. Ganzert, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of American Humane Association.
“The literature review was conducted to inform the research plan and design for the remainder of the effectiveness study and to provide a resource to help understand the current status of human-animal interaction research within this domain,” said Michael McFarland, DVM, DABVP, Group Director, Veterinary Operations, Companion Animals, U.S. Pfizer Animal Health.
Results from the study will be widely disseminated through professional conferences and peer-reviewed journals in a diverse range of disciplines, including veterinary medicine, pediatric oncology, social work, and animalassisted therapy.
In addition to the literature review, focus groups and interviews were conducted with hospital staff, family caregivers and animal-assisted therapy handlers, to glean vital information regarding childhood cancer epidemiology and treatment, the well-being of patients and families who are affected by childhood cancer, the applications of AAT for various populations in need, the state of AAT effectiveness research, and the considerations that need to be made when incorporating therapy animals into clinical settings.
Pfizer Animal Health, the Pfizer Foundation and AHA first partnered for this unique study in 2010. The partnership is a part of Pfizer Animal Health’s Commitment to Veterinarians™ platform—which offers support through training and education, research and development, investing in the future of the veterinary profession, and philanthropy. Pfizer Animal Health underscored its commitment to this particular research with a grant to AHA in 2011.
Findings from the literature review, focus groups and interviews will help
