FROM THE
EDITOR
The holidays came and went – it seemed like in the blink of an eye! 2018 has just begun and it already feels like the months ahead are going to come and go at warp speed. There is always so much going on that it is important to stay organized. That’s easier said than done, but the one thing that helps me is to make lists. This way I can prioritize what I need to do and when. It’s a quick reference for what is coming up and also what I’ve finished. Does your list look like this? January starts out with sales for sheep, hogs, and goats, as well as a full calendar of jackpots. Add in school, sports, and 4-H and FFA activities. Then squeeze in time to work on your projects, going to shows AND doing all those things you started your list with! It is easy to get on overload. Parents are running in different directions with their children – one has to be here, the other one needs to be there. Organization is the key to keeping some sanity and peace of mind during the chaos of our busy lives. So try it! A written, visual, list is a good way stay on track. The New Year is all about resolutions. It is the start – a new beginning – a chance to do better or make changes – or regroup, get organized, or just keep plowing forward! I don’t think a New Year resolution always needs to be about changing one big thing in your life. You know –like that diet you are definitely going to stick to this time! I think a New Year resolution should be about making your life better as a whole. Maybe it’s more about a goal than a “have to make this change.” Like working together better as a family unit, or not overextending yourself and saying “no” to some things, or finding time to breathe and enjoy the moment you are in. Maybe it’s about working on being a better, happier, more peaceful person. That is what I mean – the New Year should be about making your life better. So go forward with joy and happiness and good things will come to you! I do have a resolution this year and it’s something I have been thinking about for a while. My resolution is to PAY IT FORWARD. I truly believe that every good turn starts a snowball that keeps giving on and on and on. Here in California there have been devastating fires the past several months, and in other states tragic storms. Through all catastrophes, we see hope rise up and people step up to help those in need. It restores our faith in the human spirit and brings strength and promise for a better future. There are lots of ways to pay it forward. It can be as simple as helping someone at the store or buying a coffee for the person behind you in line. It can also be contributing to something you believe in, or a good cause that the community needs. Maybe there is some way you would like to pay it forward. All good things start with one small step, so go ahead, add it to your “list” and see what you can do. With the New Year, the CJLA is very busy! The annual CJLA Award Banquet is just around the corner. This is a huge event to recognize the 2017 members for their hard work, dedication, and achievements during this past show season. We are always excited to do this for the kids, but it takes a lot of support to get it all done. We need your help! If you haven’t signed up to be a sponsor, look in this issue for more information and help us honor these kids! Give me a call or contact me if you have questions. I can share with you the details of our award program and where help is needed. The CJLA was started in 2000 and has been able to accomplish so much for our members because of the generosity of our donors. We cannot say “thank you” often enough for this wonderful support year after year! Be a part of this outstanding group who believes in these bright stars! As I sit here at my desk, I have to admit my mind is slightly overwhelmed with all that needs to be done in the next month or so. I have my spiral notebook out and am working on a to-do list for the week ahead and also making notes for the next few months as I think of something that will need to be accomplished. I never lose this notepad, it is my reference and reminder when life gets busy and I can’t remember a thing! It’s a crazy life, but it’s a good life! Keep reading each issue of the magazine for up-to-date information and articles. We cover what is going on in the western states and have many features for you to participate in throughout the year. You can also find us on our website and Facebook page, and also check out the CJLA on their website and Facebook page. If you move, be sure to let us know so we can quickly update our subscription files and you don’t miss an issue. If you want to be included in our email list, contact us so we can add you. We only send e-blasts for advertisers and important events. We never sell our email lists or provide them to other magazines or services. It is another way to keep you informed of what is going on! Spring is just ahead – Enjoy!

know them. PLUS – the Heifer Divisions have been revised AND we have added the Wether Dam Ewe Division! If you have any questions about membership, divisions, or rules, please contact us right away so we can help you and you don’t miss out on any part of the association!
As you read this, 2018 has entered the record books! Some of you may wonder where the last 12 months have gone, and some of you may be ready to leap into 2018! For us at CJLA, it’s a little of both! As you read this, we are busy working on the Annual Award Banquet to honor the 2017 membership. This is always an exciting event held in February (this year it will be February 17, 2018) at the Mid State Fairgrounds in Paso Robles.
The 2018 membership application is in this issue of the magazine. WE ALSO OFFER PAYPAL ON THE CJLA WEBSITE. www. cjlainfo.com. You will be able to fill out the complete membership information when you pay by PayPal. You must join by the first show you attend in 2018 to start earning points. Remember – CALL or EMAIL if you have questions!!!
All 2017 members have received their invitation by now! Be sure to RSVP to Heidi so we can reserve your dinners for the big night! We can sure use your help with a couple of things for the banquet! We continue to need Sponsors and Donations. Everything goes back to our membership in the form of awards so it’s a very worthwhile and MUCH APPRECIATED gift. If you have any questions at all, please contact Heidi and she can discuss everything with you. We also need donations for our silent and live auction we hold each year during the banquet. This is always a highlight of the evening as everyone loves to bid on all the exciting items!
The regular method of communication from CJLA is by email. We send E-blasts through Constant Contact so if you are not hearing from us, please be sure we have your correct email address or have us add you to our lists. We also post on the website and in this magazine but you need to read our emails to receive our updates. We do our best to get the information out to you on a regular basis. And of course, we want you to contact us anytime you have questions about anything at all! It is much better to ask than to not know an answer or miss out on something!
The 2017 final points and placings are posted in this issue and on the CJLA website for anyone who would like to view them. It was definitely a competitive year as members attended sanctioned shows and exhibited their animals to earn points for the year-end awards. CJLA is so appreciative of the efforts of all our shows and our members!
So…go full speed ahead into 2018! Set new goals and work hard to achieve them! Be sure to enjoy the journey along the way! We will see you on the road!
You can also find the complete 2018 Sanctioned Show List on the website (www.cjlainfo.com) The Show List on the website has all the show details and contact information for each show. We also put a shorter version of the list in each issue of this magazine. And the shows place their ads in each issue as well. You will need to contact each show for their entries and any questions you have about their event. Angus Offers Summer Internships College students can grow their professional skills through American Angus Association® 2018 summer internships. If you’re a college student interested in working in the Angus business, what better way to spend the summer than learning from the teams at the American Angus Association®? Internships are available to college students for summer 2018. These 10-week, paid internships provide opportunities through the communications group, Angus Journal, events and education group, Angus Foundation and Angus Genetics, Inc. (AGI). Students interested in applying should send a resume, cover letter and references to careers@angus.org by Feb. 1. The events and education intern will assist in planning and executing youth events hosted by the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA), including preparations, correspondence and communications for junior shows and events. Applicants should be a self-starter, detail-oriented and outgoing with the ability to work well with others. Livestock and event planning experience is a plus but not required. Travel to the 2018 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS), Leaders Engaged in Angus Development (LEAD) Conference, and other events is expected. From print stories to TV scripts, photography, graphic design and more, the communications intern will truly gain valuable ag communications experience. Applicants should have strong writing and design skills and have completed coursework in news and feature writing, editing and design. Experience in photography, video and social media would be helpful. College juniors or seniors are encouraged to apply to be part of the Angus Journal internship. The writing-intensive opportunity offers the chance
to participate in producing publications, including Angus Journal, Angus Journal Digital, Angus Beef Bulletin, Angus Beef Bulletin EXTRA, Angus Journal Daily, editorial websites and social media. The internship can be tailored to applicants’ strengths, but many duties can be anticipated, including traveling to industry events. Experience in news and feature writing, editing and photography are strongly suggested. For an interest in 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organizations, resource development (fundraising) and purebred livestock association related careers, the Foundation internship is an excellent opportunity. This intern will be integral in facilitating the Foundation’s activities, programs and projects. The intern will learn about the functionality of a non-profit and how the Angus Foundation successfully raises funds to support youth, education and research for the advancement of the Angus breed, beef cattle and agricultural industries. The intern will assist staff in all facets of the Angus Foundation’s operations including engaging major supporters and benefactors. For students pursuing their master’s degree or PhD in animal breeding and genetics, AGI has an opportunity to work on one of the world’s largest beef genomic databases. The internship will be focused on research that involves data analysis. Candidates should have experience in analyzing animal breeding data sets, and experience analyzing genomic data is preferred. For more information about summer internships with the American Angus Association, visit www.angus.org. --Written by Sarah Hill, Angus Media

Jake Pickering Joins the American Angus Association
from Around the Nation
New regional manager to serve members in Arizona, California, Nevada and Utah.
mum 2.0 GPA. Eligibility requirements and application guidelines are included. Applicants will want to strictly adhere to the guidelines and provide the information requested when submitting their application to the Angus Foundation.
The American Angus Association welcomes Jake Pickering of Oroville, California, as the organization’s newest member of the regional manager team. Pickering begins his role Jan. 8 and will represent Region 11, which consists of Arizona, California, Nevada and Utah.
Applicants are required to submit the following for consideration: the 2018 application form; three letters of recommendation; copy of current high school/college/university transcript; and applicant’s Association member code.
As a regional manager, Pickering will serve as a boots-on-the-ground representative for the Association and will attend various cattle events, sales and activities throughout the territory. Regional managers are responsible for helping cattle producers identify and accomplish herd goals, educating members on new programs and services, and they serve as a marketing resource for Angus breeders.
In 2017, the Angus Foundation awarded more than $213,000 in scholarships to more than 115 undergraduate and graduate students. When combined with other endowed and non-endowed scholarship funds administered by the Angus Foundation, nearly $300,000 was invested in more than 130 students pursuing their higher education. For more information, please contact Jenkins at 816-383-5100 or mjenkins@angusfoundation.org.
“Jake has a passion for the animal industry, specifically in cattle, and he has a strong rapport with industry leaders and influencers,” said American Angus Association CEO Allen Moczygemba. “His work ethic and experiences in the agricultural industry will benefit our membership greatly in the western regional area.”

Applications Now Open for 2018 Pork Industry Scholarships
Pickering graduated from Texas A&M University in December 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in animal science. He served as the Texas A&M assistant livestock judging coach during the last year of his college career.
The National Pork Board announces the opening of the application period of the 2018 Pork Industry Scholarships. This program is open to college juniors and seniors who have plans to pursue a career in swine production management or a related field. In addition, students who will be seeking to attend veterinary or graduate school with an emphasis on swine are encouraged to apply. The National Pork Board will award up to 21 scholarships in 2018 totaling $48,000. The top applicant will receive $5,000, the second-ranked applicant will receive $3,500 and all others will receive $2,000.
“It’s an exciting time for the Angus breed and an honor to work for the American Angus Association,” Pickering said. “I can’t wait to hit the road and get to personally meet the members of my vast territory. It’s an area I have a strong passion for, and I hope to be of service for registered Angus producers.” Angus breeders in Territory 11 are encouraged to get in touch with Pickering and ask him questions about Association programs and services or for help locating Angus seedstock. Regional managers also advise producers on marketing opportunities available through the Association, including advertising through the Angus Journal, Angus Beef Bulletin, The Angus Report and other avenues.
“Developing human capital and identifying future leaders is critical to the continued success of the swine industry,” said Chris Hostetler, animal science director for the Pork Checkoff. “The National Pork Board’s Animal Science Committee understands this need and continues its commitment to recognize excellence and encourage students through awarding scholarships.”
Prior to his time at Texas A&M, he was a member of the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M livestock judging team where he was recognized as an All American, based on his success in both the classroom and livestock judging contests. While on campus at Texas A&M, he was a member of the Saddle and Sirloin Club and interned with the State Fair of Texas.
The guidelines for the scholarship application and the online form can be found at www.pork.org/scholarship. The deadline for application submission is Feb. 16, 2018. Following review and selection, recipients will be notified in April.
For more information about Angus cattle and the Association, visit www.angus.org.
“Students who meet the scholarship criteria are encouraged to submit an application for consideration.” Hostetler said. “This is an excellent opportunity to provide financial assistance to students seeking swineoriented careers.”

About 80 percent of the previous recipients of the Pork Industry Scholarship have pursued advanced degrees as they prepared to serve the industry as veterinarians, nutritionists, reproductive biologists and management consultants.
Apply for Angus Foundation Scholarships Angus Foundation scholarship applications are now available online. Today’s college costs are astronomical—it’s a known fact. The Angus Foundation seeks to help Angus youth offset some of those steep costs by awarding undergraduate and graduate level scholarships.
The National Pork Board has responsibility for Checkoff-funded research, promotion and consumer information projects and for communicating with pork producers and the public. Through a legislative national Pork Checkoff, pork producers invest $0.40 for each $100 value of hogs sold. Importers of pork products contribute a like amount, based on a formula. The Pork Checkoff funds national and state programs in advertising, consumer information, retail and foodservice marketing, export market promotion, production improvement, science and technology, swine health, pork safety and sustainability and environmental management. For information on Checkofffunded programs, pork producers can call the Pork Checkoff Service Center at (800) 456-7675 or check the Internet at www.pork.org.
“Angus youth are the future of our Association and the industry,” said Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. “We want to help them get a head start in any way that we can, and awarding scholarships is one way to do that.” Undergraduate and graduate student scholarship applications are available online at angusfoundation.org and are due May 1. Applicants must have, at one time, been a National Junior Angus Association member and must currently be an active Junior, Regular or Life member of the American Angus Association®. Applicants must be a graduating high school senior or enrolled at a junior college, four-year college/university or other accredited institution and have a miniJANUARY/FEBRUARY 2018
