FROM THE

EDITOR

2016 is here! Take a deep breath, and start to conquer the “to-do” list you have set for yourself! You know “that list,” the one you make when you realize the end of the year is near and you are so looking forward to spring, sunshine and the promise of exciting things ahead. As an added bonus, you actually have 366 days to accomplish everything on your list, because it’s Leap Year! That’s exciting! One extra day, 24 hours, 1,440 minutes. Imagine what you can do with that extra time! So what have you added to Your List? Whether it is your livestock project, your FFA or 4-H group, or your school stuff, or maybe cleaning your room, or making more time for family and friends, I am sure there are definite things you want to achieve in 2016! Lists are good: they keep us organized and are visual reminders of our thoughts – a way to keep on track! I recently read a quote by Neil Gaiman that I was inspired by for this coming year:

P.O. Box 41430 • San Jose, CA 95160 (408) 888-2503 • Fax (408) 776-9811 Publisher & Managing Editor: Heidi Beljean — (408) 888-2503 Email: pacshow@earthlink.net Production Manager & Art Director: William Crump — (662) 305-5434 Email: pacificshowcase@gmail.com

“I hope that in the year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You are doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you are doing something!

Instagram and Facebook Management: Caitlyn Hartzell – caitlyn.hartzell0521@gmail.com

Wow! That is food for thought! So true! I suggest each of you find a quote that makes you think and inspires you to go forward and “do something”!

Representatives: Katina Costerisan (661) 330-6392 (CO) Email: kcosterisan@gmail.com Mike Rusher (503) 888-1823 (OR) Tiffany Carter (530) 409-5143

On another front, I am so excited to hear that more junior showmen are opening their parameters and going out to try bigger shows on a national level. I remember when I was showing, most kids just went to the county fair. Going to even the state fair or another big show in the same state was HUGE! And going out of state was a pretty farfetched idea for most kids. So whether you went to the Arizona National, or you are going to Denver, or planning for a national show later in the year, it is a great step in learning more, meeting more people with your same interests (that will become lifelong friends) and seeing how you stack up in the show ring against other exhibitors from across the country. Don’t be afraid to go out and try! It is a great way to find out how much you know, how good your animals are, and what you can improve on. When I talk to kids and parents who have gone to some of these shows, they are always excited to tell you how much they learned and the great people they met! With all the jackpots we have now, it has made a stronger, more competitive field of showmen. Don’t be afraid to take that next step to compete at a higher level. It will only make you stronger – and you may be surprised by how well you do!

As 2015 came to a close, the CJLA was busy wrapping up the show year AND planning for the annual Award Banquet, which will be held on February 13, 2016, in Paso Robles, CA. The next weeks will go by way too fast but we always pull it together to have a great evening of awards and friends and fun. So many kids work so hard throughout the year to earn those valuable points so they can stand up on the stage and accept awards and recognition for their outstanding achievements. As always, the success of our award program depends on the generosity of donors and sponsors. We still need a lot of help to reach our goals for this year! We have included a sponsor form in this issue – if you haven’t sent in your donation yet and want to help out a great group of kids, PLEASE take the time to fill it out and return to us. If you have any questions, give me a call any time. I would love to visit with you!

Subscriptions: (Bulk mail - one year - $25; two years - $45.) (First class - one year - $35; two years $65.) For processing of new subscriptions - please allow 4 to 6 weeks. For address corrections, send current mailing label along with new address to Pacific Showcase.

Time to Plan Ahead! The March/April Issue is our

Cattle, Lamb, Sheep and Hog Sires Issue

As I begin another year of this magazine, I am excited to be able to offer you a publication that informs, educates, and inspires you. We work hard to represent the junior livestock industry and if there is anything you want to see us address or include, let me know. I love to hear your thoughts and ideas!

Give us a call!

NEWS & UPDATES! Well, folks – it official! As you read this, 2015 has entered the record books! Some of you may wonder where the last 12 months have gone, and some of you may be ready to leap into 2016! For us at CJLA, it’s a little of both! As you read this, we are busy working on the Annual Award Banquet to honor the 2015 membership. This is always an exciting event held in February (this year it will be February 13, 2016) at the Mid State Fairgrounds in Paso Robles.

You must join by the first show you attend in 2016 to start earning points. Remember – CALL or EMAIL if you have questions!!! The regular method of communication from CJLA is by email. We send E-blasts through Constant Contact so if you are not hearing from us, please be sure we have your correct email address or have us add you to our lists. We also post on the website and in this magazine but you need to read our emails to receive our updates. We do our best to get the information out to you on a regular basis. And of course, we want you to contact us anytime you have questions about anything at all! It is much better to ask than to not know an answer or miss out on something!

All 2015 members have received their invitation by now! Be sure to RSVP to Heidi so we can reserve your dinners for the big night! A couple more things to do with the Banquet! We continue to need Sponsors and Donations. Everything goes back to our membership in the form of awards so it’s a very worthwhile and MUCH APPRECIATED gift. If you have any questions at all, please contact Heidi and she can discuss everything with you. We also need donations for our silent and live auction we hold each year during the banquet. This is always a highlight of the evening as everyone loves to bid on all the exciting items!

So…go full speed ahead into 2016! Set new goals and work hard to achieve them! Be sure to enjoy the journey along the way! We will see you on the road! CJLA Questions? Emails can be sent to cjlainfo@yahoo.com or through the CJLA website: www.cjlainfo.com

The 2015 points and placings are posted on the CJLA website for anyone who would like to view them. It is the largest annual student event in the country. Congress Repeals ‘COOL’ Meat Labeling Provision

Move Saves United States From Harmful Trade Retaliation From Canada, Mexico at $1 billion annually.

With today’s passage of a fiscal 2016 catch-all federal spending bill that includes repeal of the meat labeling provision of the U.S. Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) law, the United States avoided harmful retaliation from its two biggest trading partners. The National Pork Producers Council, which last week drafted and sent to congressional lawmakers a letter signed by 248 other organizations urging labeling repeal, welcomed the move.

Congress approved the so-called omnibus bill with language repealing the labeling provision for beef and pork, thus avoiding retaliation. The Senate and House Agriculture Committee chairmen, Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., and Rep. Michael Conaway, R-Texas, were instrumental in getting the repeal language added to the spending measure.

The COOL statute requires meat to be labeled with the country where the animal from which it was derived was born, raised and harvested. (It also applies to fish, shellfish, fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables and certain nuts.)

“America’s pork producers are grateful that lawmakers, particularly Chairman Roberts and Chairman Conaway, recognized the economic harm we faced from retaliation because of the WTOillegal COOL law,” said NPPC President Dr. Ron Prestage, a veterinarian and pork producer from Camden, S.C. “I know tariffs on U.S. pork would have been devastating to me and other pork producers.”

Canada and Mexico brought cases against COOL to the World Trade Organization, which ruled that it violated U.S. international trade obligations, discriminating against Canadian and Mexican livestock sent to the United States to be fed out and processed. The decision authorized Canada and Mexico to put retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods going to those countries – the No. 1 and No. 2 U.S. export markets. The WTO set the retaliation level

According to Iowa State University economist Dermot Hayes, the average U.S. pork producer currently is losing money on each hog marketed, and those losses would have been exacerbated significantly under retaliation from Canada and Mexico.

Apply for Angus Summer Internships Deadline to submit application is Feb. 5, 2016.

having completed coursework in news and feature writing, editing and design. Experience in photography, video and social media is an asset in this fast-paced internship.

College students with an interest in the livestock business should consider applying for a summer internship with the American Angus Association. The 10-week, paid internship programs offer three students a chance to gain real-world knowledge and experience in the beef cattle industry.

To apply, send a cover letter, résumé, references and writing samples to Jena McRell, digital editor, Angus Media, 3201 Frederick Ave., Saint Joseph, MO 64506. For more information, contact McRell at 816-383-5100 or jmcrell@angus.media.Working closely with the communications intern on the Angus Media team, the Angus Journal offers a college junior or senior the opportunity to be part of its editorial team for the summer. The writing-intensive internship offers the selected intern an opportunity to participate in producing various publications, including the Angus Journal, the Angus Journal Digital, the Angus Beef Bulletin, the Angus Beef Bulletin EXTRA, the Angus Journal Daily, editorial websites, and social media efforts.

The member-driven organization provides internship opportunities through the events and education department, communications and public relations, and the Angus Journal editorial team. Application details are outlined below, and all materials must be received by Feb. 5, 2016. A summer intern joining the Association’s events and education department can expect to play a significant role in planning youth events hosted by the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA). The selected intern will assist with preparations, communications and correspondence for junior shows and events.

The internship will be flexible enough to tailor to the strengths and needs of the intern, but many duties can be expected. Experience in news and feature writing, editing and photography are strongly suggested.

Applicants must be enrolled in an agriculture-related major, and consider themselves a self-starter, detail-oriented and an outgoing individual who has the ability to work well with others. Travel to the 2016 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS), Leaders Engaged in Angus Development (LEAD) Conference, and other shows and events is expected.

To apply, send a cover letter, résumé and writing samples to Shauna Hermel, Angus Journal editor, 3201 Frederick Ave., Saint Joseph, MO 64506. For more information, contact Hermel at 816-383-5270 or shermel@ angus.media.

To apply, send a cover letter, résumé and references to Jaclyn Clark, events and education director, American Angus Association, 3201 Frederick Ave., Saint Joseph, MO 64506, or email jclark@angus.org.College students with a passion for agricultural communications would make an excellent addition to Angus Media’s communications team. From print stories to television scripts, and photography to graphic design, the summer intern will experience all facets of communications for the American Angus Association.

ANGUS MEANS BUSINESS. The American Angus Association® is the nation’s largest beef breed organization, serving more than 25,000 members across the United States and Canada. It provides programs and services to farmers, ranchers and others who rely on the power of Angus to produce quality genetics for the beef industry and quality beef for consumers. For more information about Angus cattle and the American Angus Association’s programs and services, visit www.angus.org.

Applicants should have strong writing and design skills, in addition to

American Shorthorn Association Announces Internships Summer 2016 Paid Positions Available

More information can be found at www.shorthorn.org or by contacting Gwen Crawford, 816-599-7777 or gwen@shorthorn.org. Interested applicants should email a cover letter, resume, and three letters of reference by February 15, 2016 to the American Shorthorn Association: Internship, 7607 NW Prairie View Rd, Kansas City, MO 64151.

The American Shorthorn Association (ASA) and the American Junior Shorthorn Association (AJSA) seek individuals interested in a full-time paid summer internship. ASA will be selecting two individuals for the 2016 summer internships. This is an outstanding opportunity to attain training and work experience in an association atmosphere. The intern will assist with programs of the ASA and AJSA activities, such as the planning and execution of the National Junior Shorthorn Show & Youth Conference, including but not limited to press releases, creative design work, media contact, correspondence with planning committees, and data and entry input and organization. We will select a "Registrations" intern as well as a "Communications" intern.

The mission of the ASA is to provide quality service and support to its members by promoting the value of Shorthorn cattle in all aspects of the beef industry, while maintaining the integrity of the herd book and performance database. The ASA is headquartered in Omaha, Neb., and was founded in 1872 with herd book records going back to 1822. As one of the oldest American breed associations, the ASA provides services for more than 6,000 junior and senior members who register nearly 15,000 cattle annually. The American Junior Shorthorn Association promotes personal development through youth activities and educational events. The AJSA is dedicated to the betterment of its members, promotes valuable skills, and fosters friendships that will last a lifetime. To learn more, contact the ASA office or visit www.shorthorn.org or www. juniorshorthorn.com.

Applicants should be a sophomore, junior, or senior in college and have an interest in working in an agriculture-related field after college. Located at the ASA headquarters in Kansas City, MO., with beginning and ending dates flexible, the intern will assist with the daily in-office preparations for various ASA activities, correspondence, communications, as well as other work as assigned. Computer skills and experience with communications and agriculture are desired.
