FROM THE
EDITOR The holidays came and went – it seemed like in the blink of an eye! Now we are looking at the beginning of 2017! Every year we get busier and busier! No rest for the weary, and 2017 promises to go full speed ahead! January starts out with sales for sheep, hogs, and goats, as well as a full calendar of jackpots. Add in school, sports, 4-H and FFA activities, and fitting in time for your projects and shows just adds to the overload of things to get done on weekends. Parents are running in different directions with their children – one has to be here, the other one needs to be there. I’m a big believer in lists and planning. Organization is the key to keeping some sanity and peace of mind during the chaos of our busy lives. I find that writing stuff down helps to sort it out in my brain and a written, visual, list is a good way not to forget something. It shows me in black and white that I can get it all done!

So I have my notepad out and am working on a to-do list for the week ahead and also making notes for the next few months as I think of something that will need to be accomplished. I never lose this notepad, it is my reference and reminder when life gets busy and I can’t remember a thing! It’s a crazy life, but it’s a good life!

The New Year is all about resolutions. It is the start – a new beginning – a chance to do better or make changes, regroup, get organized, or just keep plowing forward! I don’t think a New Year's resolution always needs to be about changing one big thing in your life. You know, like that diet you are definitely going to stick to this time! I think a New Year's resolution should be about making your life better as a whole. Maybe it’s more about a goal than a “have to make this change.” Like working together better as a family unit. Or not overextending yourself and saying “no” to some things. Finding time to breathe and enjoy the moment you are in. Working on being a better, happier, more peaceful person. That is what I mean – the New Year should be about making your life better. So go forward with joy and happiness and good things will come to you!

With the New Year, the CJLA is very busy! The annual CJLA Award Banquet is just around the corner. This is a huge event to recognize the 2016 members for their hard work, dedication, and achievements during this past show season. We are always excited to do this for the kids, but it takes a lot of support to get it all done. We need your help! If you haven’t signed up to be a sponsor – look in this issue for more information and help us honor these kids! Give me a call or contact me if you have questions. I can share with you the details of our award program and where help is needed. The CJLA was started in 2000 and has been able to accomplish so much for our members because of the generosity of our donors. We cannot say “thank you” often enough for this wonderful support year after year! Be a part of this outstanding group who believes in these bright stars!

Time to Plan Ahead!
As I sit at my desk writing this editorial, it is raining outside. The creeks are running and all that dry dirt has turned to mud. With so many years of drought behind us, the rain is a blessing and hope for better days ahead. I hope that each of you go forward into 2017 with that same hope and promise of a brighter tomorrow.

All 2016 members have received their invitation by now! Be sure to RSVP to Heidi so we can reserve your dinners for the big night! A couple more things to do with the Banquet! We continue to need Sponsors and Donations. Everything goes back to our membership in the form of awards so it’s a very worthwhile and MUCH APPRECIATED gift. If you have any questions at all, please contact Heidi and she can discuss everything with you. We also need donations for our silent and live auction we hold each year during the banquet. This is always a highlight of the evening as everyone loves to bid on all the exciting items!
The regular method of communication from CJLA is by email. We send E-blasts through Constant Contact so if you are not hearing from us, please be sure we have your correct email address or have us add you to our lists. We also post on the website and in this magazine but you need to read our emails to receive our updates. We do our best to get the information out to you on a regular basis. And of course, we want you to contact us anytime you have questions about anything at all! It is much better to ask than to not know an answer or miss out on something!
The 2016 points and placings are posted on the CJLA website for anyone who would like to view them. It was definitely a competitive year as members attended sanctioned shows and exhibited their animals to earn points for the year-end awards. CJLA is so appreciative of the efforts of all our shows and our members!
So…go full speed ahead into 2017! Set new goals and work hard to achieve them! Be sure to enjoy the journey along the way! We will see you on the road!

Applications Now Open for 2017-18 Pork Industry Scholarships Online Submissions Due by Feb. 17, 2017
The National Pork Board announces the opening of applications for its pork industry scholarships for the 2017-18 academic year. The eightyear-old program is open to juniors and seniors in college who plan to pursue a career in swine production management or a related field, or will be seeking to attend veterinary or graduate school and major in a discipline with an emphasis on swine. This year, the National Pork Board will award up to 21 scholarships totaling $48,000. The top applicant will receive $5,000, the second-ranked applicant will receive $3,500 and all others will receive $2,000.
makers, which is the driving force behind this scholarship program.” Approximately 80 percent of previous pork industry scholarship winners have pursued advanced degrees as they prepared to serve the industry as veterinarians, nutritionists, reproductive biologists and management consultants. Specific questions about the Pork Industry Scholarship program should be directed to Chris Hostetler at chostetler@pork.org or (515) 223-2606. The National Pork Board has responsibility for Checkoff-funded research, promotion and consumer information projects and for communicating with pork producers and the public. Through a legislative national Pork Checkoff, pork producers invest $0.40 for each $100 value of hogs sold. Importers of pork products contribute a like amount, based on a formula. The Pork Checkoff funds national and state programs in advertising, consumer information, retail and foodservice marketing, export market promotion, production improvement, science and technology, swine health, pork safety and sustainability and environmental management. For information on Checkoff-funded programs, pork producers can call the Pork Checkoff Service Center at (800) 456-7675 or check the Internet at pork.org
“We invite any student who meets the scholarship criteria to submit an application,” said Chris Hostetler, animal science director for the Pork Checkoff. “This is an excellent opportunity for the next generation of young people studying in swine-related fields to get some needed recognition among their peers and get some financial assistance.” The guidelines for the scholarship application and the online form can be found atwww.pork.org/scholarship. The deadline for application submission is Feb. 17, 2017. Recipients will be notified in April and the related funds will be available for the Fall 2017 semester. “The pork industry is committed to continual improvement in producing safe, wholesome protein,” Hostetler said. “Key to achieving this goal is identifying and developing the next generation of leaders and decision-

Get Hair Growth Fast “I used ProHair100 for the last few months with great success. I noticed how the hair stayed softer, had more bloom and had tremendous hair growth in a shorter period of time on a steer that was light on hair when starting ProHair100. I recommend this product to anyone who asks.”
