JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2020

FROM THE

EDITOR 2020! It has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? “2020” sounds hopeful! Full of promise and good things ahead! The start of a new decade! Now that is exciting! What lies ahead for you? What will you do in the new decade?

P.O. Box 41430 • San Jose, CA 95160 (408) 888-2503

The New Year gets kicked off with new ideas, new goals, and new resolutions. It is also the time when juniors are gearing up for their new winning projects to purchase! As you go to the project sales and purchase your next prospect, big dreams fill your thoughts. A lot of work goes into making a great one and it starts with the breeder who plans matings and manages and prepares the offspring to be ready for you to go on with. The hard work doesn’t stop when you get it home, this next step is just beginning.

Publisher & Managing Editor: Heidi Beljean — (408) 888-2503 Email: pacshow@earthlink.net Production Manager & Art Director: William Crump — (662) 305-5434 Email: pacificshowcase@gmail.com

Now it is up to you to feed and manage and train those animals to reach their full potential – the potential that your breeders spent so much time planning at the start. So stick to your guns and put in the effort that will make your animal stand out in the ring! Keep your goals always in mind and your hard work will pay off. Practice makes perfect, so go to jackpots and expose your animals and yourself to new situations. Keep the end point in sight and make each show experience work towards that goal.

Instagram and Facebook Management: Kaela Cooper – kaelacooper@aol.com Representatives: Kaela Cooper Tiffany Carter

(805) 835-1486 kaelacooper@aol.com (530) 409-5143

Another thing to remember is to utilize your breeders. Get to know their genetics and program. Ask questions – they are always willing to help! After all, everyone started at the beginning at some point and got to where they are now by asking questions and studying and figuring out what works. The great thing about livestock people is that they want to pay it forward by sharing their knowledge to those coming up. One of the best rewards for a breeder is to have someone buy from them and be excited to learn everything they can and to share those experiences with them throughout the project.

Here in the office we are gearing up for the big CJLA award program at Western Bonanza on February 15th! It gets pretty darn busy making all the plans for the awards! This ceremony is to recognize all our 2019 members who worked so hard all year long with their animals and travelled up and down the state to show at our sanctioned shows. It is difficult to put into words how much it means to me to watch our members enjoy their projects and learn and succeed in the show ring, and see families spending time together at the shows! It has always been my goal to showcase these great kids who are such a vibrant and important part of our industry and the future of agriculture. For me, this is what CJLA is about!

Pacific Showcase welcomes readers contributions. Articles of interest, show results, sale results, and calendar dates are welcome and will be printed on space available. To have articles or pictures returned, include a stamped, selfaddressed envelope. Send all submissions to address above. Pacific Showcase is published bimonthly. It is mailed first class and third class bulk mail at Morgan Hill, California. Postmaster: send address changes to Pacific Showcase, P.O. Box 41430, San Jose, CA 95160. Subscriptions: (Bulk mail - one year - $25; two years - $45.) (First class - one year - $35; two years $65.) For processing of new subscriptions - please allow 4 to 6 weeks. For address corrections, send current mailing label along with new address to Pacific Showcase.

With that said, being able to award our youth is a huge undertaking and we rely on the generosity of so many who believe in our kids. We desperately need sponsors and would appreciate your consideration of a donation so we can achieve our goals. Or if you know someone who would like to help, please let me know and I can talk to them about options of support. To make it even easier, donations can now be made through the CJLA website – www.cjlainfo.com. If you have any questions, please let me know!

Time to Plan Ahead! The March/April 2020 Issue is our

Cattle, Lamb, Sheep and Hog Sires and Sales Issue

While we are at Western Bonanza, the CJLA also has a Silent Auction. Everyone always loves the items that are donated and this is a great fundraiser for us. WE NEED ITEMS FOR THE AUCTION! Let me know if you will be bringing something so I can plan. And then you can drop it off at the CJLA building on the afternoon of Friday February 14th or the morning of February 15th. The bidding on our silent auction goes on throughout the day on the 15th. As I sit at my desk finishing up this issue, I am enjoying a bit of sunshine, blue sky, and green grass sprouting on the hillside. Hope for the days ahead is everywhere around me and I am going to enjoy each moment! I encourage each of you to take time to enjoy your moments, too. Keep reading each issue of this magazine as we bring you new information and articles. You can also check us out on our website and Facebook page, and head on over to the CJLA website and social media pages too. Sign up for emails so your get our news right away! We look forward to bringing you more exciting things in the months ahead.

CJLA NEWS & UPDATES

preciative of the efforts of all our shows and our members! As we go into the New Year, we are going to be working on some changes to get updates out more quickly. We realize this has been frustrating for our members. There are multiple factors that are a part of getting results, getting things recorded, and being able to post updates. Please know that we will be doing everything we can to make this better! We have plans to soon send out a questionnaire for feedback from our members and families so we can hear your thoughts and input. We will keep you updated by E-blasts, and posts of the website and Facebook pages.

As you read this, 2019 has entered the record books! 2020 starts a new decade! That is exciting! It inspires new goals and new ideas and we are looking forward to new times for the CJLA! Some of you may wonder where the last 12 months have gone, and some of you may be ready to leap into 2020! For us at CJLA, it’s a little of both! As you read this, we are busy working on the Annual Award Presentations to honor the 2019 membership. This is always an exciting event held in February (this year it will be February 15, 2020) at the Mid State Fairgrounds in Paso Robles.

You can also find the complete 2020 Sanctioned Show List on the website (www.cjlainfo.com) and we have it in this issue for your reference. The Show List has all the show details and contact information for each show. And the shows place their ads in each issue as well. Keep in mind that show information can change and we put all updates on the website. You will need to contact each show for their entries and any specific questions you have about their event. The 2020 CJLA Rule Book is also on the website and we encourage everyone to print a copy for reference and to review the rules throughout the year. If you have any questions about membership, divisions, or rules, please contact us right away so we can help you and you don’t miss out on any part of the association! It is much better to ask than to not know an answer or miss out on something!

Last year we changed from an evening banquet and award presentation to announcing awards throughout the day ringside. We had lots of positive feedback on the change so we will be doing the same thing this year – with a few tweaks to make it all work better. Western Bonanza is graciously working with us and will stop their show while we are doing our presentations. We have set times for the awards at each ring and all information is in the letter we sent out to all our members. It promises to be fun and exciting and we hope everyone will come and cheer for the kids as we recognize them for their achievements! We will have a place set up for everyone to pick up their CJLA t-shirts and packets and will also have our Silent Auction for everyone to bid on the great items that are being donated. Look for us around the main showring and vendor area for the CJLA tables! If you have questions, please contact us!

The regular method of communication from CJLA is by email. We send E-blasts through Constant Contact so if you are not hearing from us, please be sure we have your correct email address or have us add you to our lists. We also post on the website and in this magazine but you need to read our emails to receive our updates. We do our best to get the information out to you on a regular basis. So…go full speed ahead into the new decade - 2020! Set new goals and work hard to achieve them! Be sure to enjoy the journey along the way! We will see you on the road!

We can sure use your help with a couple of things for the banquet! We continue to need Sponsors and Donations. We rely on our donations to reach our goal of rewarding the members. Everything goes back to our membership in the form of awards so it’s a very worthwhile and MUCH APPRECIATED gift. IF YOU CAN HELP IN ANY WAY OR KNOW IF SOMEONE, LET US KNOW! If you have any questions at all, please contact Heidi and she can discuss everything with you. We also need donations for our silent auction. This is always a highlight as everyone loves to bid on all the exciting items!

CJLA Questions? Emails can be sent to cjlainfo@yahoo.com or through the CJLA website: www.cjlainfo.com

The 2019 final points and placings are posted on the CJLA website for anyone who would like to view them. It was definitely a competitive year as members attended sanctioned shows and exhibited their animals to earn points for the year-end awards. CJLA is so ap-

Now Accepting Applications for the 2020 William “Bill” Silveira Scholarship

35th Annual Show!

As each year passes, more and more people realize that impact that William “Bill” Silveira had on the California Pork Producers Association (CPPA). A visionary, Bill poured his heart and soul into making CPPA work for pork producers. This legacy still lives today. After Bill’s passing his loving wife Sofia started a scholarship fund for junior CPPA members in his memory. Bill believed in young people and knew providing them opportunities would pay dividends well into the future. The Silveira Scholarship Fund was established to help cultivate future CPPA and agriculture industry leaders. The scholarship is presented to hard working and dedicated pork producers who are pursuing a college education with financial assistance. The scholarship is awarded to the most qualified recipient and awarded at CPPA’s Pork Spectacular. Deadline to apply: March 1, 2020. Mail Submission: Application available in word and pdf. Online Submission details can be found online at http://calpork. com/youth-programs/william-silveira-scholarship/.
