The animal has a more feminine, attractive physique and even moves better. This helps to offset the results seen from aggressive, high energy show cattle diets. All natural and fertility safe for open heifers, bred heifers, steers and bulls. Simply top dress 6 oz. per head, per day of this pelleted supplement on your current ration until desired freshness has been achieved.

FROM THE
EDITOR As every issue of this magazine nears completion, I am continually amazed by how fast time goes by. Yes, there is that brief period after an issue is completed and in the mail, that I think I have some breathing room and a little time to catch up on something else I’ve been meaning to get done. But right now I’m thinking of the bigger picture! Flash back to 1994! I began this magazine then – and that has been 22 years ago! I wish someone could tell me where that time has gone! I do know it has been an adventure – one I would not trade for the world. I remember watching little kids start out showing and now their kids are in the ring. Ribbons and buckles and banners, green and white and blue and gold uniforms, animals lovingly trained and groomed and led around a multitude of showrings from county fairs to state fairs and national shows. Camps and contests too numerous to count. And for me, the chance to visit with breeders, friends, livestock enthusiasts, agriculture industry supporters, and so many more, about the subject that is our passion!

Seventeen years ago I began the California Junior Livestock Association and am so proud that this idea I had has grown into the premier organization it is today. Our members have made us all proud as they have displayed their skills and sportsmanship at jackpots throughout California. With the generous support of so many wonderful people, and the efforts of everyone who puts on shows, it is truly a group effort that has far-reaching benefits for all involved.

Summer is in full swing and that means it is State Fair and County Fair time. As you make your preparations for these events, it is important to remember that these shows are the “”Big Deal.” You may have had success at jackpots and field days in the past months, but the real emphasis of all your hard work is on the end result. Winning a jackpot is great, but doing well at State or County is where the money is at. Here is where you are rewarded for those months of hard work with an auction check that will help pay for the next project, or go into your college fund. In California, parent help with animals is limited at our fairs, but they are invaluable in so many other ways. Parents hold everything together – keeping uniforms clean, making sure kids are fed, have all the supplies they need, are on time to the show ring, and offering moral support and encouragement. For all the kids reading this editorial, please take time to thank your family for that support and help. Remember all the times they helped you at home – driving to breeders and sales, building pens and shelters, driving to the feed store and meetings, doing your chores when you have to be somewhere else! It takes an army – or a family – to get it all done. And then look around when you get to your fair – all those people helping were in your shoes at one time. Now they are pitching in so you can have the same experiences. Take time to tell them thanks, too!

Thinking back again to when I started this magazine: I had finished school, had some cattle jobs, and had my own business fitting cattle. When I was ready to do something different, I had to do a lot of soulsearching to figure out what that “something different” was. Was I ready to start a new career? Could I be successful at what I chose to do? I knew that I had to “Just Do It.” “Jump in head first,” as they say. And that is what I did. I started a magazine for the western states that highlighted our livestock youth and all that went along with that idea. I was able to use my contacts from 4-H and college, and those I knew in the cattle industry, and I was off and running. It has been a lot of work, and I’ve learned so much along the way, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I have to thank my family and friends who stuck with me and supported me from day one. My goal has always been to deliver a product that helps my customers. Let me know how we can help with advertising or promotion of your product. Keeping you in the public eye is important and that is what we strive to help you with. Give us a call for advertising or ideas. We are here for you!

Western States Success at the World Pork Expo Fairgrounds for a week of showing and a variety of contests and competitions.
Established in 2000 for youth under the age of 21, the National Junior Swine Association (NJSA) is now the largest youth livestock organization in the world with more than 12,000 members. The NJSA is devoted to helping the youth reach their desired potential through educational opportunities, leadership conferences, scholarship programs and swine exhibition opportunities at many national and regional junior shows. The NJSA’s mission is to provide a network uniting purebred swine enthusiasts through a youth organization that offers competitive opportunities to reward excellence, enhance educational opportunities, promote the value of pure genetic lines and develop leadership skills at both the state and national level.
A competitive set of hogs and kids once again attended from the western states of California, Oregon, and Arizona and placed well in class and in several breed divisions. Two California girls also placed in the top ten in their showmanship divisions. Eleanor Borba, Atascadero, placed 6th in Intermediate Showmanship and Sutter Long from Corning, placed 7th in Senior Showmanship. Judges for the junior shows included: Purebred Gilts – Charles Hodde, Tx.; Purebred Barrows – Russell Pedrett, Ca.; Jr. Cross Gilts – Levi Canales & Chris Fischbacher, Tx.; Cross Barrows & Nov/Int. Showmanships – Al Schminke, Ia.; Jr. & Sr. Showmanships – Warren Beeler, Ky.
The big event of the summer for the NJSA is the World Pork Expo Jr. National held in Des Moines, IA. June 6-11, 2016 saw trucks, trailers, families, and exhibitors, converge at the Iowa State
