FROM THE
EDITOR Happy Summertime! Yes, it is finally here! By the calendar, the first official day of summer was June 21st, but out here in California we have had a very cool spring – making us wonder when it was going to feel like summer. It sure was a rude awakening when the temperature jumped from 65 degrees to 80 degrees and then to 100 degrees! I guess we got a little spoiled with those cool days when it was pleasant to be outside and you weren’t bothered by the heat or wishing you were inside staying cool.
P.O. Box 41430 • San Jose, CA 95160 (408) 888-2503 • Fax (408) 776-9811 Publisher & Managing Editor: Heidi Beljean — (408) 888-2503 Email: pacshow@earthlink.net
People can get out of the weather and find ways to get cooled off, but our animals can’t unless we provide it for them! We as livestock breeders and junior showmen, always strive to keep our livestock comfortable. We all realize that our animals’ comfort and well-being comes before ours. They are dependent on us and it is our responsibility to give them the best possible care. Summertime also means fair time, so I just want to remind the junior showmen who read this editorial and this magazine, when you are at the fair, to make sure to take care of your animals like you do at home. Prepare ahead of time, before you leave home, for whatever might come up when you are at the show. Will there be shade and a cool barn or do you need to plan for shelter and bring fans? Will you need to take bedding to be sure your animal is comfortable in a stall or pen? And what about enough feed and hay and either water from home or maybe a water hose filter to be sure your animal will drink in a new place? As animal stewards, it is important to remember that you and your animals are on public display. It is important for the public to see how well cared for your animals are, and it is important for you to share your knowledge to the public. Be courteous and take advantage of the opportunity to speak with those stopping at your stalls. Remember, you represent all of us. Be a part of the positive image of animal husbandry, raising healthy livestock, and being an outstanding person in your own right.

This summer season of national shows, state fairs, and county fairs is a busy time but it’s also a great time because it is spent with family and friends, meeting new people, and competing with your animals. You get to show off what you have learned and compare your animals to others. This is usually the culmination of a project you started months before. Did you reach your goals you set at the beginning? The best outcome is one you are proud of, and makes you excited to start all over again for the upcoming year.
Subscriptions: (Bulk mail - one year - $25; two years - $45.) (First class - one year - $35; two years $65.) For processing of new subscriptions - please allow 4 to 6 weeks. For address corrections, send current mailing label along with new address to Pacific Showcase.
Time to Plan Ahead!
In this issue, I love the Graduation Section! It always makes me feel a bit older when I see kids graduating that I watched when they first started showing. I do love seeing their photos from when they were little to where they are now, and reading about their future plans and dreams – where their next step in life will take them! These Seniors are the future of the livestock industry! If they pursue a field in agriculture, they have a background to help them reach and excel in their goals. If they go on to another field, those days spent in the barn and at the fair have given them a work ethic unmatched by any other endeavor and an undying appreciation for production agriculture. Congratulations Seniors! May your stars always shine brightly!

CJLA
NEWS & UPDATES!
Summer is in full swing and we hope you are enjoying the sunny weather and school vacation! Of course summer brings county fairs and the big California State Fair, so for CJLA kid’s summer also means a lot of time in the show barn. BE sure to check out the Sanctioned Show List for upcoming shows in the months ahead. We are excited to have some new shows sanctioning this year – be sure to welcome them to CJLA and say thanks for putting on a sanctioned show!
And be sure to contact us anytime if you have questions about points or CJLA or anything related to showing your animals. We are here to help!
We have a first set of points listed in this issue. It is not a complete total of all shows held to date. You will see what shows are included at the top of the points list. Our point tabulator has been busy transferring show reports and getting points calculated. In order to get a list in this issue, she had to reach a stopping point so she could get a total completed and turned in by the production deadline. HOWEVER, as you read this, we ask you to check out the CJLA website – www.cjlainfo.com. We are posting new updates there and we are also sending out new updates by eblast to all current and past members and anyone who has signed up for email news through the CJLA website. We will continue to post and eblast updates as we get those completed.
Speaking of the Award Banquet!.....the 2018 banquet is coming up quickly in February 2019! It is not too early to think of supporters and sponsors who would be interested in donating to the CJLA! Take action. Every story you've ever connected with, every leader you've ever admired, every puny little thing that you've ever accomplished is the result of taking action. You have a choice. You can either be a passive victim of circumstance or you can be the active hero of your own life. -- Bradley Whitford

Find each of the following words.Search for the micro and macro minerals. Animals require more of the macro-minerals (Calcium, Phosphorus, Magnesium, Sodium, Potassium, Chlorine, Sulphur) than the micro-minerals (Iodine, Iron, Cobalt, Copper, Manganese, Molybdenum, Zinc, Selenium). If animals do not consume enough of the macro-minerals, this will cause reduced production, infertility problems, weakness of the bone and increased incidences of non-infectious diseases. Deficiencies in micro-minerals (trace elements) can cause a variety of diseases and conditions depending on which mineral is deficient. The words may appear more than once. Good luck!

Since the inception of the Distinguished $20,000 Sullivan Supply/Stock Show University Scholarship in 2008, we have gifted over $200,000 to an elite group of young individuals with unmatched talent. This year we received 1,479 applications from 44 states and Canada. It’s been our great pleasure to see these kids grow within this great livestock industry. It’s because of them that we are so highly encouraged about what we do, from this scholarship program to Stock Show U clinics, to Junior National sponsorships, to introducing new products to the industry, we are so honored to be a part of it all. We want to thank our scholarship selection committee of industry leaders (non-Sullivan Supply employees or family members) who spend many hours of volunteer time to help us with this mission. Congratulations to all 1,479 applicants. Sincerely, John Sullivan, Founder Sullivan Supply and Stock Show University
CAMERON CATRETT, Luverne, AL This Alabama FFA State President, Alabama Junior Cattleman’s Association President, and future veterinarian has developed a love for clipping and fitting cattle as well. Cameron is success driven and can do it all. Sponsored with Twisted Fitterz Show Supply. CADE VAN VLIET, Otley, IA Cade is an outstanding livestock exhibitor with multiple champions at National Western Stock Show, North American International Livestock Exposition and the American Royal. He is the leader and captain of a three-time state champion football team. And rounds it off with numerous junior national team fitting championships. A polite and humble winner. SHELBY WEINRICH, Willows, CA

California Pork Producer’s Junior Board President, 4-H, and FFA President. She is committed to her industry. Sponsored with Sullivan Supply West.
JAME SIMS, Edmond, OK Highly involved Director in Oklahoma Junior Cattleman’s Association and Junior Hereford Association of Oklahoma. TYLER ALLAN, Schulenburg, TX
MACEY GORETSKA, Corydon, IA A state FFA livestock judging champion, President of her 4-H club, along with Grand Champions at the National Western Stock Show, American Royal, and Iowa State Fair. This Stock Show University Clinic graduate can fit and clip with the best of them.
GARRETT STANFIELD, Manchester, OH
This National Junior Hereford Association Board Director and third generation Hereford breeder has been highly involved with a decorated FFA career. She is the winner of elite showmanship competitions and a highly competitive Hereford heifer exhibitor that has turned her interests to embryo transfer, and a possible future vet.
KIERTSEN JASS, Garner, IA
Kiersten is the perfect example of what we believe the Sullivan scholarship stands for. Competitive, humble and a true leader that excels with her cow herd, on the American Junior Simmental Board and showmanship. She is responsible for all day to day activities in the show barn and her cow herd.
JOHN GELLERMAN, Petersburg, IL The humble fighter with passion that won’t give up. John’s bred and owned champions and involvement in nighttime cow checks, responsibilities in the show barn and the cow herd can’t be matched. His love for livestock leads to his motto, “Cattle is life is cattle.”
Keanna focuses on her Simmental bred and owned program. Highlights include breeding a triple crown winning Simmental bull. This American Junior Simmental Association board of trustees member does her own genetic mating selection and has a deep passion for helping others. Sponsored with Freeman Show Supply. Tyler is a national champion with his cattle and in showmanship but that does not define him. He is a highly accomplished FFA livestock evaluator, tremendous athlete with academic excellence awards. Being one of the best young fitters in the country, rounds out a complete package.
Garrett believes in giving back with his time to the community and the ag industry. His involvement includes nursing home visits, Ronald McDonald house, American Junior Simmental Association Board and FFA President. Yet, he finds the time to advance his show career by attending Stock Show University Clinics and being the 2016 Ohio State Fair Premier Exhibitor. KATHY LEHMAN, Shelby, OH
